The influencer took action against Zara for defamation

An influencer has won £16,000 after staff at Zara opened the dressing room curtain while she was trying on clothes.

Krystal Joyce claims she was left upset when a security guard opened up the cubicle she was in at Ireland’s flagship Zara store in Dublin.

The 20-year-old said she was only partly dressed when she was then ‘interrogated’ by the staff members, as she claims she was made out to be a criminal.

She told a court that the female security worker stopped her from leaving and repeatedly told her: “I am calling the guards.”

Effectively held hostage in the Zara, the Irish traveller claimed she was a victim of defamation.

Joyce claimed it was implied, within earshot and sight of others in the clothing store, that she had been ‘engaged in criminal activity’, reports Daily Mail.

And, she said, this interrogation continued from security and shop staff before she was eventually allowed to go onto the shop floor in Blanchardstown shopping centre.

The TikToker, with over 122,000 followers, won her case as a judge agreed she had been wronged, ordering Zara bosses and their security company to pay her 20,000 euros (£16,647) in damages.

Joyce’s barrister, Esther Earley, said the woman often filmed herself trying on different outfits in store changing rooms as part of her TikTok content. She added that the influencer would then promote and recommend the clothes, pointing out where the items could be bought by her followers.

Judge Roderick Maguire said he found it very difficult to accept anything said in court by the store witness due to the apparent ‘glaring inconsistencies’ in evidence.

Earley suggested during her cross-examination that a note of the incidence written by Zara staff had been ‘falsified’.

Judge Maguire described Joyce as a truthful witness and said: “The plaintiff has given honest and forthright evidence.”

He ruled that the influencer had experienced significant upset due to the staff’s actions, particularly with the curtain being pulled open.

He added: “I find Ms Joyce was a truthful witness and was particularly upset because she has a social media presence through which she does her best to raise awareness for the Travelling community of which she is a member.”

Judge Maguire concluded Zara and the security team’s actions constituted defamation.

Joyce was awarded 10,000 euros (£8,324) damages against ITX Retail Limited (which operates the Zara store) and 10,000 euros against security company Bidvest Noonan (ROI) Limited.

NASA’s terrifying protocol if asteroid was heading towards Earth as ‘exact locations’ of potential 2032 collision revealed

NASA's terrifying protocol if asteroid was heading towards Earth as 'exact locations' of potential 2032 collision revealed

NASA has very strict rules it follows if an asteroid, such as 2024 YR4, ended up on a collision course with Earth

The very real possibility of an asteroid, known as 2024 YR4, hitting Earth has led to widespread news coverage as the 1998 sci-fi classic Armageddon is given the chance of becoming a real life event.

But what would happen if 2024 YR4 did in fact have a trajectory that lined up with our planet? Well, the boffins over at NASA have a very real protocol in place if such a collision course was on the horizon.

Scientists at the US space agency have been monitoring the asteroid, which is projected to be 40 to 100 metres wide, after it caught its ‘attention’ at end of last year.

The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System in Chile, dubbed ATLAS, came across the space rock while observing the skies on 27 December, 2024. Mapping its path, astronomers revealed there was a very real – albeit small – chance of it hitting Earth in the near future; seven years away in 2032 to be precise.

Wired report that according to the asteroid’s current path, if it was to hit Earth, the experts reckon 2024 YR4 should fall somewhere in a band of territory stretching from northern South America, across the Pacific Ocean, to southern Asia, the Arabian Sea, and Africa. So, countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador would be at risk.

As of right now there is a one in 43 (2.3 percent) chance of it hitting Earth, which is almost double the previous odds (1.2 percent).

Keeping a constant eye on the skies is NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office.

The purpose of this department is to discover and track near-Earth objects including comets and asteroids that could collide with Earth. And as a result of that, work with the US federal government to prepare for an impact event.

NASA asteroid expert Dr Kelly Fast has explained what would happen if an asteroid collision event became something humanity had to face in real life away from the likes of Michael Bay’s 1998 classic starring Bruce Willis.

The 2024 YR4 asteroid circled in green, bottom left (ATLAS)

The 2024 YR4 asteroid circled in green, bottom left (ATLAS)

But just like in Armageddon, taking on the asteroid would be at the forefront of plans.

“Well, it’s important to find asteroids before they find us in case we need to get them before they get us,” Dr Fast says.

“An asteroid impact is the only natural disaster that could be prevented.

“NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office supports projects to discover asteroids and to calculate their orbits far into the future.

“If an asteroid impact threat is discovered years or decades in advance, then a deflection mission might be possible. The first order of business for planetary defense is to find the asteroids.”

NASA would issue an official alert in the event of an asteroid being a real threat to the world.

This would first be issued the governments of the countries where the asteroid was predicted to impact, followed by the wider world. The public would have to be informed about the threat and the United Nations made aware.

Back in 2022, NASA experimented with its asteroid policy after blowing up a space rock in deep space.

Through its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, experts tested what Dr Fast described; how can we measure up against killer asteroids if the threat becomes real?

Costing $324 million, the scientific experiment calculated how much momentum would be needed to deflect the asteroid when hitting it head on.

DART smashed into the asteroid of choice, called Dimorphos, which was a minor-planet moon of the asteroid called Didymos. Dimorphos posed zero threat to Earth during the experiment, with it being around 11 million kilometres from our planet when struck.

You’ve got the ‘eyes of a sniper’ if you can spot the bird hiding in the woods within five seconds

You've got the 'eyes of a sniper' if you can spot the bird hiding in the woods within five seconds

Give yourself the challenge, do you see it?

This is your challenge, you’ve got an image to look at and if you can spot the bird in five seconds then you’d better give yourself a pat on the back and feel extra good about yourself today.

It’s simple, just look at the image below and if you can spot a crow within a few seconds then you have passed this test.

If you can’t then we’ll tell you the answer below, so no peeking if you want to do it fairly instead of just pretending to your friends that you know where something is.

Take a look in the picture and see where you might find a crow.

Did you spot it quickly?

In case you couldn’t spot the bird look at the top right of the image and see what that is perched atop one of the barren trees ravaged by the winter weather.

Once you know where it is the answer becomes a bit obvious for this one, though you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a leaf sticking out of a branch at first glance.

There’s a whole community of people who enjoy these sorts of challenges over on r/FindTheSniper and it makes for a different daily brainteaser to doing the crossword or a sudoku every morning.

This challenge seemed fairly doable for the people who like trying their eyes and brains on these puzzles.

Hello, bird. (Reddit)

Hello, bird. (Reddit)

If spotting a bird perched atop a tree was too easy for you then you may wish to check out some other challenges in a similar vein.

Those who think they could spot a serpent in the undergrowth are encouraged to try this particular puzzle and see if you can pick out the snake amidst everything else.

Should you clear that snake-spotting challenge then there’s another one you can tackle which might be even more difficult.

If you can find two snakes then two lizards ought to be child’s play, or they would be if the animals weren’t particularly impressive at hiding themselves from prying eyes.

In case you’d like to try your luck with a larger animal then try and spot this deer in a forest, it’s ok to admit if you can’t actually see the thing.

Those able to see all of these animals might want to consider a career where you look at things and pick out the details for a living.

President Zelensky said the attack was ‘a terrorist threat to the entire world’

A Russian drone strike has hit the protective dome built over the Chernobyl power plant to prevent it from spewing deadly radiation out into the world, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

Russia has spared little in its invasion of Ukraine, having massacred civilians, killed thousands and displaced millions from their homes.

It is almost three years since Vladimir Putin sent troops across the border and started the largest, deadliest conflict in Europe since the Second World War.

In the early stages of the war there was fighting around Chernobyl, and the safety of the site which endured a horrific nuclear disaster is a concern for the entire world.

President Zelensky announced that during the night (14 February) a Russian drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the protective dome over Chernobyl, though fortunately it does not appear as though radiation levels in the area have increased.

Zelensky said that the drone strike damaged the structure and caused a fire, which has since been put out. There were no casualties in the attack.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the strike occurred at 1.50am local time, but fortunately there was ‘no indication of a breach’ in the dome that covers reactor number four.

Built in 2016, the shell is meant to stop radiation leaking out of the destroyed reactor, and IAEA chief Raphael Rossi said the strike and military activity nearby ‘underline persistent nuclear safety risks’.

Writing on social media Zelensky said the attack was ‘a terrorist threat to the entire world’ and warned that ‘Putin is definitely not preparing for negotiations’, a statement which comes at a time when US president Donald Trump is being warned not to try and make a peace deal with Russia that does not have the consent of Ukraine.

Zelensky said: “Last night, a Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter protecting the world from radiation at the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

“This shelter was built by Ukraine together with other countries of Europe and the world, together with America – all those committed to real security for humanity.

“The only country in the world that attacks such sites, occupies nuclear power plants, and wages war without any regard for the consequences is today’s Russia. This is a terrorist threat to the entire world.

“The shelter at the Chornobyl NPP was damaged by this drone. The fire has been extinguished. As of now, radiation levels have not increased and are being constantly monitored. According to initial assessments, the damage to the shelter is significant.

“Every night, Russia carries out such attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure and cities. Russia continues to expand its army and shows no change in its deranged, anti-human state rhetoric.

“This means that Putin is definitely not preparing for negotiations — he is preparing to continue deceiving the world. That is why there must be unified pressure from all who value life – pressure on the aggressor. Russia must be held accountable for its actions.”

Dad records terrifying footage of his son being swallowed whole by whale

The man said he thought he was going to die

A father captured the heartstopping moment his son was swallowed then spat out by a whale on camera.

The pair were out kayaking in the Strait of Magellan, the bit of sea between the bottom point of South America and Antarctica.

Dell Simancas and his son Adrian were paddling around in the water when he saw what he thought were ‘pretty waves’, the father told CNN.

He thought the waves ‘seemed exciting’ and then heard ‘what sounds like a strong wave hitting behind me’, turning to look Dell was surprised that he couldn’t see his son anywhere.

Fortunately, just a few seconds later, Adrian came back up to the surface as the humpback whale that had swallowed him and his raft spat them back out again.

Dell shouted at his son to ‘grab the boat’ so he’d have something to hang onto in the water, and despite being eaten by a whale, it hasn’t dimmed Adrian’s desire to be out on the sea.

In the video Adrian told his dad ‘I thought it swallowed me’, and it basically did.

“When I turned around, I felt on my face like a slimy texture; I saw colours like dark blue, white, something approaching from behind that closed… and sank me,” Adrian said to CNN.

“At that moment, I thought there was nothing I could do, that I was going to die, I didn’t know what it was.”

Fortunately for the 24-year-old, the next thing he felt was his life jacket pulling him up ‘then two seconds later I was back on the surface and then started understanding what happened’.

Humpback whales do not eat humans, and luckily for Adrian it would be really difficult for one of them to actually swallow him completely rather than just gobble him up and spit him back out again.

Despite the encounter the father and son's enthusiasm for kayaking in the sea remains undimmed (Dell Simancas)

They’re pretty gentle creatures so this appears to have been a maritime misunderstanding that’s ended with everybody alive and well.

Others who have been swallowed by whales have recounted what a terrifying experience it can be, like Michael Packard who was searching for lobsters off the US coastline when a humpback whale ate him.

He was in its mouth for a lot longer than Adrian and thought ‘this is it, I’m going to die’ before moving around in the whale’s mouth in the hope that it would let him go.

Fortunately after about 30 to 40 seconds of being in the animal’s mouth it did release him, and at the time experts suggested that the man was unlucky enough to end up in the path of a feeding whale.

Kanye West releases stern statement after Bianca Censori divorce rumours

Kanye West and Bianca Censori were rumoured to be heading for divorce this week

A representative for Kanye West has released a statement following rumours he’d split from Bianca Censori.

West, known now as Ye, has been married to Australian model and architect Censori since 2022, though reports surfaced last night claiming that the couple may have called it quits.

This isn’t the first time rumours have started to swirl about the end of their relationship though, with whispers at the back end of 2024 also suggesting that the pair were ready to call time.

However, they are still together, and recently made a controversial splash at the Grammys following Censori’s outfit reveal.

A source told the Daily Mail the couple had called in quits and even had a settlement in place, which would see Censori be given $5 million and permission to stay at Ye’s home in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, an insider told Page Six that Censori had ‘had enough’, following Ye’s latest antisemitic rants on social media.

The insider further claimed to the publication that the swastika shirts he was selling on his website was ‘the last straw’, along with comments online from the ‘Flashing Lights’ rapper claiming that he ‘has dominion over her’.

“It reflects on her, and she doesn’t want any part of that circus,” they said.

The insider also noted that the 47-year-old believes that she will ‘come back’ to him.

Now, the couple’s long-time representative has released a statement addressing these rumours to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Ye and Bianca are in Los Angeles, about to enjoy Valentine’s Day together,” spokesperson Milo Yiannopoulos said.

“Announcements about their private life will come from them directly, not unsourced rumour in the tabloid press.

“Is this the fifth or is it the sixth time the press has wrongly reported that Ye and Bianca are separating? I’ve lost track.”

The rumours follow a Twitter tirade in which West made some controversial statements about Censori.

In one of Ye’s messages during his rants on X, he posted: “I HAVE DOMINION OVER MY WIFE. THIS AIN’T NO WOKE A** FEMINIST S***. SHE’S WITH A BILLIONAIRE, WHY WOULD SHE LISTEN TO ANY OF YOU DUMB*** BROKE B*****. PEOPLE SAY THE RED CARPET LOOK WAS HER DECISION.

“YES I DON’T MAKE HER DO NOTHING. SHE DOESN’T WANT TO, BUT SHE DEFINITELY WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO IT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL.”

He further added: “YOU STUPID A** WOKE PAWNS I HAVE NO RESPECT OR EMPATHY FOR ANYONE LIVING CAUSE NOBODY LIVING CAN F*** WITH ME BUT I DO LOVE SOME PEOPLE AND I GIVE THEM FAVOR.”

American man visiting England shares the ‘five things’ he hates about the country

American man visiting England shares the ‘five things’ he hates about the country

He actually really likes the place, but nothing’s perfect

An American chap who visited England has come up with a list of the things he likes and dislikes about coming over to this side of the pond.

Mark Wolters is a travel YouTuber with over a million subscribers to his Wolters World channel in which he talks about his various adventures and gives people thinking about going there some helpful advice.

He recently posted a video from his travels around England and had plenty to say, including some of the things he didn’t really like about coming here.

The weather

Well this one goes without saying doesn’t it?

We could pretend that the gloomy, overcast skies and regular bouts of rain are character building but really they’re not the sort of thing someone wants to encounter when they’re on holiday.

Wolters said that while the English weather could be good at other times of the year, coming during the rainy months was going to subject you to the weather you’d expect.

Fortunately, he was nice enough to point out that it’s not all doom and gloom and we do actually get some sun from time to time.

The prices

According to this well-travelled gentleman the prices over here are a tad more expensive than in continental Europe.

Unfortunately we had noticed, through the traditional English method of observing the price of a Freddo, that things were getting more expensive around these parts but it’s worth getting the comparison with other countries.

He also mentioned that the trains were quite expensive, which is something those of us who live here have been grumbling about for a while so it’s nice to get some international recognition of this problem.

Wolters suggested that any tourists visiting England who wanted to keep the costs down should consider visiting places other than the incredibly expensive London.

The nightlife

It seems he’s not the biggest fan of the nights out, particularly encountering rowdy crowds of sports fans who may or may not be very happy drinking companions.

He urged people to make use of ‘common sense’ and navigate around potentially problematic issues, and lamented the ‘tourist traps’ that were catching an awful lot of people visiting England.

Crossing the street

Warning his viewers that this one is liable to scare ‘the living bejesus out of you’, Wolters pointed out that since we drive on the correct left side of the road here in England and most of the rest of the world drives on the wrong right-hand side it can be a bit scary for tourists.

If you’re not used to it then you might be accustomed to looking left when crossing the road, and the travelling man said he’d seen people have near misses or even be hit because they looked the wrong way.

Driving

This one goes hand-in-hand with getting used to being on the other side of the road, as he said that for the first 30 minutes behind the wheel all your instincts are wrong and you might panic when you’ve got turns and roundabouts to deal with where you think everything’s going to be on the other side.

He also warned tourists that they’d better follow the speed limits because England’s network of speed cameras are really effective and you’ll eventually get a letter telling you that you’ve copped a fine.

Wolters warned that the first half-an-hour behind the wheel would feel really weird. (Getty Stock Photo)

The good stuff

Fret not, dear reader, if you were thinking that he didn’t like the place as it seems that despite his list of gripes he has plenty nice to say about England as well.

Just as he had five bees to let out of his bonnet, Wolters also had five things he really loved including the villages of England with their darling personalities and character (just don’t call them quaint, seriously).

He was also a big fan of the B&Bs in England, particularly the breakfasts they served and the folks running them who knew a lot about what to do around the area.

The travelling YouTuber voiced his appreciation for the fine selection of pubs England has to offer, as well as the wonderful nature that can be seen by those tourists willing to travel outside of the cities which he reckons is a really overlooked feature.

Above all though his favourite thing was the English people themselves, because what’s a place without its people?

Man broke ridiculous old UK laws in front of police to see if he would still be punished for them

This menace must be brought to justice

A bloke decided to test whether the police in the UK are up to their former standards by breaking a bunch of old and rather ridiculous British laws in front of officers.

Comedian Max Fosh has built a reputation for his jokes and pranks – he’s the guy who put a ‘Welcome to Luton’ sign outside Gatwick Airport so people coming into land would think their travel plans were going wrong.

He also whipped out an Uno reverse card when he got booked during a charity football match, while the poor chap once fell foul of a computer glitch that meant he only sold three tickets for a gig but carried on the show regardless.

Over on his YouTube channel, Max put up a video of his attempts to break silly laws in full view of the police.

First up was his attempt to ride a penny farthing, that big bike where the front wheel is comically larger than the back one, in front of the police.

Despite what Max thinks this is not illegal. (YouTube/Max Fosh)

Despite what Max thinks this is not illegal. (YouTube/Max Fosh)

However, before he could do that he had to learn how to actually ride one first, and once he got the hang of it, he zoomed past a group of police officers who lifted not a finger to stop him.

Sadly, there’s a very good reason for that, and it’s because poor Max has actually got this law wrong, and I’d best not let you go without a proper education on the legal developments of the Victorian Britain.

The Red Flag Act he talked about was actually brought in 1865 and required someone to be walking in front of a car with a red flag.

The penny farthing he was riding is not a ‘self-propelled’ machine since it requires a set of human legs to propel it, and the law he was talking about breaking was actually repealed in 1896 and replaced with one that raised the speed limit to a nifty 14mph, and got rid of the need for someone to walk in front with a red flag.

Given the increase in speed limit they’d only have been run over anyway, and the whole thing was done away with in 1930.

Lock him up and throw away the key, this menace must be stopped. (YouTube/Max Fosh)

Lock him up and throw away the key, this menace must be stopped. (YouTube/Max Fosh)

If he really wanted to break the law by going over 4mph these days, then he’d need to be driving a mobility scooter on a pavement or footpath.

Anyhow, his next attempt at lawbreaking was on steadier ground, as he committed the heinous crime of bringing a plank of wood along a footway without the intention of loading it into a vehicle.

He had now become a menace to society, but was not brought to justice and went to try and talk to a Post Office worker for too long, thus delaying these messengers as they went about their duty.

The comedian saved perhaps the most vile of crimes until the last, being drunk in charge of a cow.

This is from an 1872 law which prohibits Brits from being inebriated in charge of cattle, a horse or a steam engine, with Max taking a trip to the pub to get himself ready for this felonious foray.

Once he was appropriately sozzled, he was handed the reins to cow Rosie, which was even mentioned on the radio, but since the comedian has kept performing it seems as though he avoided jail for the stunt.

What is this world coming to when a drunk man can be in charge of a cow and not face the full force of the justice system?

The mind boggles.

James Franco co-star from film on Netflix made feelings known about working with the controversial actor

The two starred together in the 2016 film

James Franco’s co-star from a 2016 film you can watch on Netflix once revealed her feelings about working with him.

The controversy surrounding the Pineapple Express and Spider-Man star has reignited this week after Seth Rogen finally commented on Franco’s claims that their friendship is ‘over’.

Franco was accused in 2018 of sexually inappropriate behaviour by five former students from his acting school, with of his two of his accusers alleging that he’d ‘create a pipeline of young women who were subjected to his personal and professional sexual exploitation in the name of education’ in a 2019 lawsuit, the BBC reports.

While Franco denied the claims, with his lawyers calling them ‘ill-informed’, he did admit to sleeping with students whilst running his acting school, saying that was ‘wrong’.

He settled a £1.6 million lawsuit with his two former students, and has since addressed the impact the allegations had on him and his family.

Back in 2022, Franco faced some criticism from Zoey Deutch who he starred together with on Why Him?

The film follows Deutch as a young woman called Stephanie who is dating James Franco’s rich character Laird.

When Stephanie’s father, played by Bryan Cranston, finds out that Laird plans to propose, he sets out to try stop it.

The film, which is on Netflix at the time of writing in the UK and Ireland, received middling reviews, however, it spawned a viral moment in which Deutch was seemingly critical of her co-star.

It came during a podcast appearance on Chicks In The Office in 2022 after Deutch was asked a ‘f*ck, marry, kill’ question.

When discussing her ‘favourite’ actor she’d worked with, including Dylan O’Brien, Zac Efron, and Glen Powell, she joked that there are several actors she could add to that list – with one in particular falling under the ‘kill’ category, saying: “I definitely have a kill.”

The podcast hosts asked ‘James Franco?’ leading her to refuse to answer and simply reach for a bottle of water on her desk.

While she has never outright spoken out about her experience with Franco, she has previously described the experience of kissing him in the film as being ‘meh’ and ‘not memorable’.

In addition to this, when accusers came forward accusing him of sexual misconduct, Deutch released a statement to the New York Times saying: “I am so proud and in awe of the people who have come forward about [James Franco].”

When asked by Variety earlier this year about Rogen saying he would no longer work with Franco, the actor said: “No. I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over, and not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.”

And when asked about these quotes in an Esquire interview, Rogen said: “Honestly, I absorb so little media that it really wasn’t on my radar.”

The father of three, who was aged 47, has left behind his wife, Anna-Louise Bates. His sister, Becci Louise Stubbings, wrote a touching tribute to her beloved brother.

Her post on Facebook, read, “Today we said goodbye to my brother Zach he was loved by so many, and I’m so grateful to all that came to show their support for him, it was awe inspiring. Much loved brother, father to his boys, and son to my parents, you will be missed xx.”

Stubbings was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2012, a condition that ultimately led to his medical discharge from the RAF in 2015. “It was a huge knock,” he admitted. At the time of his diagnosis, he had no symptoms, which made it all the more shocking.

Initially, doctors suspected an allergy to his new work suits, but further blood screening revealed the cancer. Despite being told it was a type of cancer that never goes into remission, he managed it with regular blood tests.

Stubbings, who had managed to keep his cancer inactive for eight years following intense chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, described the exposure to Sea King helicopter exhaust fumes as unavoidable.

The fumes, which stained seats and parts of the aircraft, circulated throughout the cabin, affecting both pilots and crew. The former RAF flight sergeant noted that many, including a local Navy pilot, had been diagnosed with cancer after prolonged exposure.

Despite the health risks, Stubbings fondly remembered his time working with Prince William who joined 22 Squadron in 2010. Stubbings was William’s instructor.

William then spent three years flying the search-and-rescue helicopters when he was based at RAF Valley, Anglesey, between 2010 to 2013. “So, yes, Will was at risk along with everyone else,” Stubbings said.

Outside of work, Stubbings remembered how he and his team created special commemorative mugs for William’s wedding, which had a lasting impact on their bond.

“Each of us had our names on them. We had one made for Will too. Somehow it got broken. I can’t remember how. He was gutted,” he narrated. He also cherished the support he received from his colleagues, particularly from William.

After learning of his diagnosis, Stubbings shared a memorable moment with William in the operations room. Although he couldn’t recall the specifics of the conversation due to the shock, Stubbings remembered William being incredibly kind and sympathetic.

Their chat, one of the last he had before leaving for treatment, left a lasting impression on him. This diagnosis also significantly altered his life, forcing him to shift to lighter duties and give up his career plans. Stubbings, who had an exemplary service record and was on track for promotion to Master Aircrew, was grateful for the emotional support that helped him through such a difficult time.

Sadly, he has succumbed to the illness. Richard Sutton, a former navy commander who had worked alongside Stubbings during their time with the coastguard on search and rescue missions in 2015, shared that he passed away in January after being admitted to a hospice just weeks prior.

Sutton described his death as a “shock,” recalling Stubbings as a warm and friendly guy who was always full of positivity. He added that Stubbings was known for his catchphrase, “happy days,” which he uttered with a smile. Sutton emphasized that the former RAF flight sergeant was also a deeply devoted family man.

The two were in a WhatsApp group with six other former military aircrews, all of whom were diagnosed with cancer. Now, six of the eight former members have died in the past 20 months and only two are still alive. Sutton’s first cancer diagnosis was in 2011 and since then, he has battled nine tumors.

As one of the two still alive, Sutton notes, “It really brings home the reality of the seriousness of the situation. In a way I feel lucky I am still here. This is not an issue that’s gone away.”

In 2024, Stubbings bravely opened up about his exposure to harmful fumes while flying military helicopters and his battle with cancer. Despite his health struggles, he remained positive, focusing on making the most of each day he had left.

When he was asked how he was coping with battling a terminal illness, he shared, “You do what you can,” adding, “It does affect you but you make the most you can out of it. You can sit there and cry about it, but that’s the hand you’ve been dealt. I could have had my legs blown off.”

A grateful Stubbings also said, “My life expectancy was ten years, I was told, and for me I have outlived my life expectancy.” In his final year, Stubbings cherished moments with his son, who was just a toddler when he received his terminal diagnosis.

During half-term, he took time away to spend a few days alone with him, creating lasting memories despite the challenges he faced.

Stubbings had spent 15 years serving in the RAF between 2000 to 2015. He was among five individuals who received compensation from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) after being diagnosed with cancer.

Sadly, it took six years for the ministry to acknowledge that toxic fumes were responsible for his illness. In the later years of his career, following his diagnosis, he benefited from a strong support system provided by the ministry. However, the settlement he received was relatively small.

Meanwhile, numerous cancer patients and their families are currently pursuing legal action against the Ministry of Defence.

Louisa Donaghy, a senior associate at Hugh James Solicitors, who represents many affected families, described Stubbings’ death as a tragic loss that underscores the severe consequences of long-term exposure to helicopter exhaust fumes.

Donaghy lamented, “Zach’s dedicated service came at a terrible cost, and his battle with multiple myeloma underscores the urgent need for accountability. The MoD must take responsibility and support those affected.”

Clare Macnaughton, whose husband, Kai, died last year from angiosarcoma after years of exposure to helicopter fumes while working for the RAF, described Stubbings as a trailblazer. She credited him with giving other affected service members the confidence to challenge the MoD over their health conditions.

“When I spoke to him, he told me that the reason the military settled out of court it was because they didn’t want him to disclose in the court room the evidence he and his team had unearthed [sic]” revealed Macnaughton.

Macnaughton emphasized how service personnel are conditioned to obey orders and serve their country unconditionally. Hence, it was a deep betrayal to learn that the very organization they dedicated their lives to had knowingly poisoned them. She expressed that the MoD should be ashamed, adding, “they have blood on their hands.”

A spokesperson for the MoD sent their condolences to Stubbings’ loved ones, writing, “Any death is a tragedy and our thoughts are with the family and friends of Zack Stubbings at this difficult time.”

They emphasized the department’s commitment to personnel safety and that health protocols are regularly reviewed at the MoD. “We are in the process of testing the exhaust emissions of in-service helicopters, to ensure that we are meeting our duty of care for personnel. It is essential that we can assure our people of their safety at work,” the spokesperson revealed.

Stubbings will be missed by his friends, loved ones, and family. His wife has come face to face with grief again after she lost her first husband and seven-year-old son a decade ago when they were knocked over and killed by a careless driver.

Bates and Stubbings met via Believe, a charity she set up to campaign and highlight organ donation in the days after her tragic double loss in December 2015. The pair got married at the end of May 2020 in a private ceremony with family and close friends. Their union was later blessed at St. Martin’s Church in Roath and a reception was held at a secluded location.

The couple did not ask for presents and instead set up a fundraising page to raise money for Believe and Help for Heroes, a popular charity that helped Stubbings since he left the RAF after being diagnosed with blood cancer.

Sutton shared that Stubbings’ wife had shown remarkable strength despite the difficulties of the past few months brought by her husband battling cancer and dying. Losing him was another devastating blow, but she has been coping as well as anyone could in such a situation.
