CNN —
Starbucks is offering a rare perk on Monday: free coffee.
Under CEO Brian Niccol, the coffee chain has drastically reduced its deals and giveaways in an attempt to boost its bottom line. But it’s offering one more freebie the day after the Super Bowl, when the nation might be drowning in drowsiness.
Here’s how to get the free brew: Members of the Starbucks Rewards loyalty program can activate a coupon in the Starbucks app on Monday for one free, tall-sized (12-ounce) hot or iced coffee. They can redeem the coupon Monday by ordering on the app or in person at stores.
The freebie is tied to broader changes Niccol is rolling out at Starbucks, which were the focus of commercials that aired Sunday before and after the Super Bowl on Fox.
The first 60-second spot showed baristas opening Starbucks locations for the day and writing on cups with Sharpies, with a voiceover saying the “Starbucks you love is back … hello again.” And a 15-second ad promoted Monday’s deal.
Starbucks has recently instructed employees to write simple, personalized messages on cups, such as affirmations, well wishes and “hello again” for regulars. Some Starbucks baristas, however, told CNN that writing out messages on every cup has slowed down the pace and is a “forced” way to build connections with customers.
Other changes rolled out under Niccol include reimagining the vibe inside Starbucks’ locations — for example, bringing back condiment bars and offering free refills on some drinks for customers who stick around in the shop to enjoy their beverages. The company also tweaked its name to “Starbucks Coffee Company” to reinforce its coffee roots.
In the coming months, Niccol plans to slash 30% of Starbucks’ menuto simplify its offerings, reduce wait times and improve customer experience.

Special Forces’ Kyla Pratt Says There’s ‘No Animosity’ for Recruits Who Held Back Group (Exclusive)
“When you see somebody working hard, if they make a mistake, we’re not going to penalize you or be mad at you,” Pratt told TooFab exclusively, after being asked about Christy Carlson Romano’s underweight bag.
Kyla Pratt says there was “no animosity” between any of the Special Forces recruits if the rest of the group was punished due to one person’s mistakes.
In an interview withTooFabfollowing the January 29th episode of FOX’s reality series, the actress opened up about her exit from the course.
“I don’t have any regrets,” Pratt told TooFab. “I think if I would have left any earlier, I might have. But when I decide, I think after the mud workout, I wanted to leave in the mud workout, but I refused to because I don’t like when someone’s trying to make me do something. And then the next day I was like, ‘I think I’m done.'”
The mud workout was given to the recruits after it was discovered Christy Carlson Romano’s bag was underweight — a big no no.
“There was no animosity at all,” Pratt insisted. “It’s crazy because you go into the situation at first and you are forced to be with 15 other people who you don’t know, you don’t even know their names … We’re in this together.”
“So, knowing that we were all there doing our best, no one was vindictive,” she continued. “No one was trying to do anything to ruin you and we are lacking sleep, lacking nutrition, lacking warmth,” she said before adding the conditions they were under caused mistakes to happen.
“We’re going to mess up. No one’s going to be perfect. So for her bag to be underweight, and that was crazy because she was ‘Miss, we got to wear our bags.’ So when you see somebody working hard, if they make a mistake, we’re not going to penalize you or be mad at you.”
The Proud Family
The 38-year-old — who is known for voicing Penny Proud in the original Disney Channel series The Proud Family — recently reprised the role in the reboot, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.“It was absolutely amazing,” she said of the opportunity to go back to the Proud family.
“Not a lot of people can say that they got to play a character 20 years later. I didn’t realize how important the Proud family was to so many people growing up until it was canceled,” she shared. “Everybody kept asking for it to come back and being a part of the show with the original creators and producers and older writers and newer writers. And I get to be a part of a cartoon that now my kids get to watch and get excited about new episodes.”
Even thought it’s been 20 years, Pratt said her voice “has not changed one bit.”
Fans of The Proud Family can expect even more from the universe too.
“We have a lot of things coming up in The Proud Family universe. I cannot share them, but let’s just say Disney plus is not playing. I think they see that the fans really enjoy the show. So they’re finding any and every way to make sure The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder lives on,” she teased.
Watch more of our interview with Kyla Pratt and her experience on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test above, as she also opens up about who she forged the best bond with on the show.
The series continues on Wednesday on FOX.

PHOENIX — — Devin Booker scored 26 points, Kevin Durant added 24 and the surging Phoenix Suns survived a late scare for a 111-109 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night.
The Suns had a 103-90 lead with 5:06 left after Durant’s 3-pointer, but the Clippers went on a late 10-0 run, cutting the deficit to 107-106 on Norman Powell’s short jumper with 40 seconds remaining.
Phoenix’s Grayson Allen made two free throws with 10 seconds left for a 111-107 advantage, which was enough to close out the win.

California woman shares haunting final exchange moments before incident killed boyfriend and dog
A devastating high-speed crash in San Francisco has left a young woman grieving the loss of her boyfriend and her dog, as she recovers from serious injuries in the hospital.
Credit: KTVU
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening (January 19) when Linh Luu and her boyfriend, 27-year-old Mikhael ‘Misha’ Romanenko, were on their way to pick up her grandmother and aunt for a trip to the airport.
Also in the car was the couple’s miniature Golden Doodle, Keeper.
“I don’t understand why it happened the way it did, and I don’t know how I’m alive,” Luu told ABC 7 in a video interview from her hospital bed. “Honestly, I want to trade places with him.
“He had such a purpose in this world.”

A Night of Tragedy
The crash happened just after 6:00PM at the intersection of 6th and Harrison streets.
According to police, a black Tesla barreled into seven vehicles, including a Waymo autonomous car, traveling at a reported speed of 98 miles per hour. Luu’s memories of the crash are fragmented, but one moment remains heartbreakingly clear.
“I remember looking over to him and saying, ‘I love you,’ and him saying, ‘I love you too,’ back to me,” Luu shared. “It was just one moment… after that, I was being wheeled into different rooms.”
Romanenko and Keeper did not survive the crash.
Seven other individuals were also left injured as a result of the devastating wreckage.
Luu, who suffered multiple broken bones, is now left grappling with the aftermath and replaying the moments she can remember.

“I do have a flashback of when I was back in the car and he was motionless,” Luu said tearfully. “It was like, ‘Oh my God, Misha,’ and he wasn’t responding. That’s all I remember.”
Driver Facing Charges
San Francisco police have arrested 66-year-old Jia Lin Zheng in connection with the crash. Zheng has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.
A police report obtained by ABC7 News anchor Dion Lim noted that Zheng did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol.

Hours after his arrest, a blood alcohol screening confirmed no presence of alcohol in his system. Zheng reportedly told investigators that he had been pressing the brakes, but the Tesla failed to slow down.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins has since emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation, per the Daily Mail.
‘It is critical that we take the time to diligently comb through all of the evidence and gather as much information as possible so that we’re able to make the correct charging decision,’ she said in a statement.
A Call for Change
From her hospital bed, Luu is reflecting on the safety of the intersection where the crash happened.
“I really want to know exactly what happened,” she said. “The way Sixth Street exists, you can go as fast as you want until you hit that stoplight, right?”
While struggling to process the loss, Luu is determined to keep Romanenko’s memory alive.
“He was just so much joy being around him,” she said. “Anyone who crossed paths with him in his life would definitely have a story or two about how he made them laugh, how he put a smile on their face.”
A Message to Others
As the investigation into the crash continues, Luu is urging others to cherish their loved ones and take nothing for granted.
“After losing everything and everyone, the love of my life,” Luu said, “Just please, hug your loved ones. Tell them you love them.”
Romanenko’s heartbreaking death marks the city’s second traffic fatality this year, while 2024 saw 41 lives lost to vehicular crashes. The intersection has also been described as a “hotspot” for accidents.
Speaking to San Francisco Chronicle, Luu said: “Something needs to be done.
“Just knowing how many car accidents and hit-and-runs there are, it is very hard to accept that it continues, leaving so many people in pain.”
The investigation is currently ongoing.
Our thoughts go out to Luu, the Romanenko family, and every person impacted by this tragedy.

Kamala Harris posts photo from Jimmy Carter’s funeral with notable exclusion, sparking heated conversation
A photo shared by Vice President Kamala Harris from the late President Jimmy Carter’s funeral has sparked online conversation — mainly for who it left out.

The funeral for the 39th president of the United States was held at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday (January 9), where all five living presidents and several prominent political figures gathered to pay their respects.
President Joe Biden had declared January 9 a national day of mourning for Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Carter became the oldest president in US history and the very first to reach the age of 100.
Paying her respects on Instagram, outgoing Vice President Harris shared a photo from the day, showing her surrounded by a number of US political figures.
“President Jimmy Carter loved our country. He lived his faith, served the people, and left the world better than he found it,” Harris wrote in the caption accompanying the post. “President Carter’s many contributions will echo for generations to come.”
However, while President-elect Donald Trump attended the Washington, D.C., funeral – alongside the other four living presidents – he was noticeably absent from the photo posted by Harris.
The image shared on her official social media accounts depicts Harris, President Joe Biden, and former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, all standing with their hands over their hearts during the ceremony.
But Trump and incoming First Lady Melania Trump – who were seated next to Obama during the event – were not included in the picture.
Although it remains unclear whether Trump’s exclusion was deliberate or if the photo was specifically cropped, social media users were quick to call attention to Trump’s absence, with some finding humor in the situation.
“Best photo crop of the decade,” one Instagram commenter wrote, with another adding: “My president with the crop.”
Another user chimed in, “I immediately laughed when I saw this image. I love a good cropped photo.”

However, Trump certainly had his supporters in the comments section, with one person commenting: “Going to be hard to crop him out next time when he’s front and center and [you’re] a few rows back.”
Another added: “Well you won’t be able to crop out the next 4 years.”
“She got a Trump-free photo and we got a Kamala-free White House. Sounds like a win-win,” added another, with one Instagram user commenting: “And you were cropped out of the election.”
As previously mentioned, it is still unclear if Harris’ photo was edited in any way (as it does appear a pillar on the right-hand side would have blocked Trump’s presence anyway), but the choice of photo certainly got people talking.
Interestingly, The Carter Center, founded in 1982 by the late president and his wife Rosalynn Carter, also left the Trumps out of a series of funeral photos shared on their X (formerly Twitter) account.
Who Attended Jimmy Carter’s Funeral?
The following notable figures were among those present at the service:
President Joe Biden
President-elect Donald Trump
Former President Barack Obama
Former President George W. Bush
Former President Bill Clinton
Vice President Kamala Harris
Vice President-elect JD Vance
Former Vice President Mike Pence
Former Vice President Dan Quayle
Former Vice President Al Gore
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
First Lady Jill Biden
Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff
Incoming First Lady Melania Trump
Former First Lady Laura Bush
Notably absent was former First Lady Michelle Obama, whose office did not provide details regarding her nonattendance.
Elsewhere during the day, former running mates Mike Pence and Donald Trump reunited for what is believed to have been their first meeting since Trump left office in 2021. Pence has since opened up about their conversation.
Body of 66-year-old man found clutching garden hose as he battled to protect home from LA fires
As President Joe Biden warns the nation that the death toll from the ensuring Los Angeles fires is expected to rise, more information is being reported about the current victims who have lost their lives in the blazes.
As of this writing, at least 11 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the fires.

One of those victims has been named as 66-year-old Victor Shaw.
It has now been reported that Shaw tragically lost his life while trying to protect his home from the raging Eaton Fire.
KTLA reports that Shaw was found clutching a garden hose, in what loved ones believe to be his final attempt to save his property – that had been in his family for 55 years – as the wildfire swept through his neighborhood.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Shaw died of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. His decision to stay behind, despite the approaching flames, ultimately cost him his life.
Shaw’s sister, Shari Shaw, shared the devastating details with KTLA, recalling her efforts to persuade her brother to evacuate on Tuesday night as the fire closed in on their shared home.

Victor had told his sister that he wanted to stay behind and try to fight the fire, she said. As the situation worsened, Shari described being forced to abandon her brother when the encroaching firestorm made it too dangerous to stay.
“When I went back in and yelled out his name, he didn’t reply back, and I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm — I had to save myself,” she said. “And I looked behind me, and the house was starting to go up in flames, and I had to leave.”
Al Tanner – a friend of the family – told KTLA that the next morning, Victor’s body was discovered on the side of the road, with the hose still in his hand. “It looks like he was trying to save the home that his parents had for almost 55 years,” Tanner said.

The Fires Rage On
The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have already claimed at least 11 lives, with estimates suggesting that more than 10,000 homes and structures have been reduced to ashes, with entire neighborhoods left in ruins, per BBC News.
The evacuation order has been expanded as officials intensify efforts to contain the relentless Palisades Fire, which has been burning since Tuesday. Thousands of residents have fled their homes as firefighters continue to battle the blaze under challenging conditions.

President Joe Biden has described the unfolding disaster in Los Angeles as a “war scene,” cautioning that the death toll is “likely” to rise as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
Adding to the tragic outlook, forecasts of strong winds threaten to fan the flames further, prompting fears of even more widespread devastation. A red flag warning, signaling critical fire conditions, remains in effect across the region over the weekend.
Currently, at least six fires are raging across the area. The most recent, dubbed the Archer Fire, erupted on Friday and remains uncontrolled, further straining already stretched firefighting resources.
Heartbroken Jennifer Garner reveals agonizing loss in LA fires: ‘She didn’t get out in time’

South California is currently grappling with a series of severe wildfires that have resulted in at least 11 fatalities and necessitated the evacuation of over 180,000 residents, the New York Times reported.
According to CNN, the fire in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood was the first to ignite on January 7, 2025, followed by the Eaton, Hurst, Lidia, and Kenneth fires.
The Palisades Fire has been fueled by winds reaching speeds of 160 km/hour. The blaze consumed over 20,000 acres, leaving more than 5,000 homes, businesses, and structures reduced to rubble, per News.com.au.
Among those affected are a number of high-profile Hollywood figures such as Jennifer Garner, who has shared her heartbreak in a recent interview with MSNBC.

In a live broadcast, the 52-year-old actress – known for starring in 13 Going on 30 – heartbreakingly revealed that her close friend didn’t survive the blaze.
The actress told reporter Katy Tur: “I did lose a friend, and for our church, it’s really tender so I don’t feel like we should talk about it yet.”
The two stood in the fire-scarred neighborhood alongside World Central Kitchen’s Chef José Andrés.
Watch the interview below:
Garner emotionally continued: “I did lose a friend. She didn’t get out in time. My heart bleeds for my friends. I mean, I can think of 100 families, and there are 5,000 homes lost. I could – without even [thinking] – just write out a list of 100 friends who lost their homes.”
The Elektra star spoke fondly of the once-vibrant Palisades neighborhood, particularly Fiske Street, which had been alive with children playing and families gathering.
“My best friend’s house was down the street. They had a gong in their front yard,” she reminisced. “There were so many kids that played in the street, and they would hit the gong at the end of the day to call them home.”
“This is the street we run down on 5Ks. This is where the little firetruck – God, bless our firefighters – this is where the firetruck goes, you know, on the Fourth of July parade,” she added.
The devastation left the Hollywood star reflecting on her fortune, as her Brentwood farmhouse, valued at $7.9 million, was spared.
“I almost feel guilty walking through my house,” she confessed. “What can I do? How can I help? What do I have to offer with these hands and these walls and the safety that I have?”

Garner joined Chef José Andrés and his World Central Kitchen team to assist in feeding the heroic firefighters battling the wildfires. The organization is known for mobilizing during crises to provide meals to those in need.
“You’re never going wrong if you donate to World Central Kitchen,” Garner said, before reflecting on her decades-long connection to the Palisades.
“I’ve lived in and around the Palisades for 25 years, so I just think all of us, we want to get our hands into working, somehow, to be helpful,” she shared. “And because of my work with Save The Children, we have a relationship with the chef, and I was able to just say, ‘Can I be with you for the day? What can I do to help? Put me to work.’”

The wildfires displaced residents from all walks of life, from everyday workers to celebrities such as Garner, Paris Hilton, Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, Anna Faris, and Billy Crystal.
While the government hasn’t released official damage estimates, private firms predict costs in the tens of billions. The Walt Disney Co. pledged $15 million Friday to aid fire relief and rebuilding efforts, AP News reported.
Per the outlet, officials expect a rise in the death toll as cadaver dogs search through leveled neighborhoods in an area larger than San Francisco.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Department warned that identifying victims could take weeks due to ongoing fires, extreme safety hazards, and the potential unavailability of identification methods like fingerprinting or visual recognition, per The Guardian.
