There are certain other symptoms to be aware of when it comes to a common oral health condition which often pops up more in winter

A dentist has advised on a common oral health issue often exacerbated in winter, and what signs to look out for that it could point to something more serious going on.

While also feeling like it’s flown by, 2024 has been a long year and many of us are beginning to feel run down, burnt out in the build up to Christmas, and the colder conditions certainly don’t help our health either.

And there’s one common oral health issue which can rear its head more now the temperature has dropped a few degrees.

Common winter issue

Ulcers can crop up anytime of the year but in winter they can be brought on more frequently, CareCredit explains, noting these types of ulcers in particular are known as ‘canker sores’.

What Are The Most Common Long Covid-19 Symptoms?
Its website states: “Canker sores are mouth ulcers that tend to peak during winter months due to the harsh dry air that makes soft mouth tissues more prone to injury and infections.

“This is because saliva is needed to rid the mouth of bacteria and food particles that can cause infections, and the dry air leads to reduced saliva in the mouth.

“Also, the winter season compromises our immune system and leaves us more vulnerable to infections in the mouth, like canker sores.”

But when can mouth ulcers be a sign of something potentially more serious?

Sign of something potentially more serious

Well, oral surgeon at Dentum, Dr Andrej Bozic said, as quoted by SurreyLive: “Most mouth ulcers heal within 10 to 14 days. If a sore lingers beyond that, it could indicate something more serious, such as oral cancer, an autoimmune disease, or a chronic infection.

“Dehydration and a higher risk of infections during colder months can aggravate mouth ulcers. But any sore that persists shouldn’t be dismissed as seasonal – it’s crucial to have it checked.

“One of the early warning signs of oral cancer is a non-healing ulcer. These are often mistaken for minor injuries, but any ulcer persisting for more than three weeks should be taken seriously.”

And there are certain other symptoms to look out for.

Other symptoms to look out for

Alongside being aware of any ulcer which doesn’t heal after three weeks, you should keep an eye out for red or white patches in your mouth as well as any lumps.

If you have any lumps or swelling in your neck or jaw or pain around your throat and mouth then it’s good to keep a note of this too.

And particularly if it leads to you experiencing any difficulty swallowing, chewing or speaking.

However, there are ways to prevent and treat ulcers.

How to prevent ulcers

Reducing or stopping smoking and drinking can help prevent ulcers from forming – alongside existing ulcers being able to heal.

Spicy and acidic foods can also aggravate ulcers if you’re willing to wave goodbye to curries or fruit juices for a while.

If you do have an ulcer, washing your mouth with a mixture of warm water and salt can help encourage healing and using a soft-bristled toothbrush can also ensure you’re not aggravating the tissue inside your mouth which could lead to ulcers forming.

If you’re concerned, it’s always best to consult a medical professional.

Disturbing reason why seeing this plane flying above you could mean you have just minutes left to live

The plane is so huge that it is as heavy as 80 African elephants – imagine seeing that soar through the sky

If you see a plane two-thirds the size of an American football field and as tall as a five-story building soaring through the sky, it could mean one of two things.

There are two scenarios in which you’d spot this beast of a plane somehow flying over your head. The first is simple: US government officials are using the huge militarized version of the Boeing 747-200 to get from A to B.

The E-4B is the US Air Force's militarized version of a Boeing 747 and it towers 63.5 feet above members of the US Air Combat Command Security Forces guarding it during a trip to South Korea in 2013 (Jacquelyn Martin-Pool/Getty Images)

The second is a little more chilling and I’ll let the US Air Force explain what its aircraft, dubbed the E-4B, is purposed for.

Its mission statement reads: “The E-4B ‘Nightwatch’ serves as the National Airborne Operations Center and is a key component of the National Military Command System for the President, the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“In case of national emergency or destruction of ground command and control centers, the aircraft provides a highly survivable command, control and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders, and coordinate actions by civil authorities.

“The conduct of E-4B operations encompasses all phases of the threat spectrum. Additionally, the E-4B provides outside the continental United States travel support for the Secretary of Defense and his staff to ensure Title 10 command and control connectivity.”

To put it in black and white, it’s in the event the White House and the Pentagon are nuked. I mean, Washington, D.C. would probably be a target for two dictators we’ve come to know rather well in recent years – North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Although there are four of these planes, each of them is stored at the Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, which is home to the US Strategic Command.

So what makes these planes so good that they can withhold nuclear blasts then?

Let’s start with the sheer size of them. They are 231 feet long, 63 feet high and have a wingspan of 195 feet, while they weigh 800,000 pounds – that’s the equivalent of flying 80 African elephants through the sky.

They’ve got four electric turbofan engines that each pack a punch – the thrust power being 52,000 pounds for each engine – so 208,000 pounds in total.

They are also kitted out with nuclear and thermal effects shielding and an air-conditioning system for cooling electrical components, as well as the capability to refuel in-flight and can fly for 12 hours straight before needing to.

They cost a staggering $223.2 million, and one of the four planes is always on alert 24 hours a day ‘to provide direct support to the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the JCS’ (Joint Chiefs of Staff).

Fans have been left concerned after rapper Dave Blunts appeared alongside his girlfriend to perform with an oxygen tank.

A viral photo of the 23-year-old rapper and his girlfriend Isabella was taken after Blunts performed at the 4th Annual Juice WRLD Day in Chicago, a tribute to the late rapper Juice WRLD, who passed away at 21 in 2019.

Blunts performed while seated at the United Center, accompanied by an oxygen tank, a sight that alarmed fans and fueled online debates.

The performance prompted a wave of reactions on social media, with fans voicing concerns about Blunts’ health.

Comments ranged from heartfelt pleas to harsh criticism. One fan wrote: “People laugh and all of that but please someone need to help him. We all know how this will end…”

Others echoed similar sentiments, with one writing: “Bro needs to get healthy,” while another added: “Save this man, please.”

Some users described Blunts’ current condition as heartbreaking, lamenting his use of an oxygen tank and the challenges he likely faces.

“This young man is missing out on so much in life. Food addiction is real,” one person wrote, citing sugar as a major culprit.

Another said: “I couldn’t enjoy myself at the show. The idea of having fun while digesting the personal issues he must [suffer] from internally would just be too much.”

While many fans expressed concern, others took a harsher tone.

Critics mocked Blunts’ size, with one user writing: “The love of your life is clearly food, bro,” and another claiming his relationship with Isabella wouldn’t exist if not for his fame.

Despite the negativity, some users applauded Blunts for continuing to perform, even under challenging circumstances.

“Bruh on stage with a honey, living his best life, never putting down the cup,” one supporter wrote.

Blunts also faced backlash for performing songs referencing drug use at an event honoring Juice WRLD, whose death was linked to narcotics.

“Performing bout taking drugs at a concert that carries the legacy of someone who died from a drug overdose,” one fan noted.

Following the show, Blunts responded to the scrutiny during his set, addressing his use of an oxygen tank and his ongoing feud with rap legend Snoop Dogg, per the Daily Mail.

“Chicago! Do y’all have a problem with me sitting down on this stage?” he asked the crowd, who responded with support.

He continued: “Exactly – so get the f*** off my d***, Snoop Dogg. You don’t know what it’s like to fight for your life every damn day.”

This comes after Snoop, 53, mocked Blunts on Instagram in November, sharing a clip of the rapper performing while seated and writing: “Put down the chicken wings and Tata chips, Nefew. That chair gonna break soon.”

Blunts dismissed the criticism, saying: “I got demons, and a tank to prove it. Don’t come for me when you have been blessed enough to be here that long; respect the struggle.”

The victim was selling the video game console online, his mother said.

An 18-year-old was arrested and charged in Houston, Texas after allegedly killing a man during an meetup to purchase a PlayStation 5.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) charged Zavion Joshua Pabon, 18, with capital murder and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the shooting death of 37-year-old Tyler McGinty, who was selling the video game console.

Patrol officers responded on Nov. 24 to a report of a shooting at a hotel room at 3850 Wilcrest Drive, according to the HPD. The victim was later identified as McGinty.

McGinty was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead on Nov. 28, the HPD said.

McGinty met up with a potential buyer at a hotel off in the 3800 block of Wilcrest near Westpark Drive in Houston.

Pabon was later identified as a person of interest in the case and was arrested Thursday and charged with McGinty’s murder, according to the HPD.

According to McGinty’s mother, Tammy Smith, her son was selling a PlayStation 5 online for $350 and went to the hotel to meet with a potential buyer.

Smith said she finds solace in knowing her son was an organ donor and that his heart continues to beat.

Pabon is currently in jail and has been denied bond, according to the Harris County Clerk’s Office. His next hearing is set for December 12.

Doctor warns about terrifying ‘granny’s purse syndrome’ that could severely harm children

Yes, it’s a real thing

Granny’s purse syndrome is responsible for up to a fifth of child poisonings and regularly sends children to the hospital.

While you might not be aware of what Granny’s purse syndrome is, it is something worth considering over the holiday period.

Dr. Meghan Martin took to TikTok to address the lesser known syndrome and why it is important to be wary of it as families get together for Christmas.

Martin, who goes by Beachgem10 on TikTok insisted that the issue is something every adult should consider for the safety of their children.

She said: “If you are spending time with your family for the holidays, it’s important to know about something called ‘granny syndrome’ or ‘granny’s purse syndrome’,

“This is when young kids get into their grandparents’ medications that are not secured properly — for many reasons. One of them is that grandparents are not used to having kids around. Often their medications are on low shelves or in their purses or in medication containers that are not child resistant.”

She also noted that the thought of children getting into their grandparents’ medication is not always something that is considered.

However, she stated that as they are children, what is normally considered safe for an adult may be harmful for them and result in hospital visits.

While this may feel like a very specific warning, according to the Absentee Shawnee Tribal health system, children taking medication they shouldn’t is the leading cause of child poisoning.

In a report they stated: “Each year, more than 500,000 children under the age of five experience a potential poisoning related to medications.

“More than 60,000 children are treated in emergency departments due to accidental unsupervised ingestions each year.

“Up to 20 percent of pediatric poisonings involve a grandparent’s medication. Make sure that all medications in the child’s environment are stored out of reach and out of sight.”

Dr Martin also called on people to be careful about how they deal with their medication in front of children during the holiday season.

She said: “Don’t take medications in front of kids because kids want to mimic what adults do.

“Never refer to medication as candy, medication is not okay to eat, candy is.”

She also highlighted that in the event a child does mistakenly ingest medication in the US you can call 911 or poison control at 1-800-222-1222.

So ahead of the family cheer, no harm in just double checking all your medications are locked away and secure.

People can’t believe how old Marisa Tomei is after seeing ‘amazing’ video posted for her birthday

Drop the skincare routine please, Marisa

Fans are all saying the same thing after a video of Marisa Tomei celebrating her birthday on Wednesday (December 4) went viral on social media.

Marisa has been in the Hollywood business for a while and has a few heavy-hitters under her belt.

Some of her many film roles include 2011’s Crazy, Stupid Love, 2015’s Trainwreck, and 2020’s King of Staten Island, however, most nowadays would associate her with Marvel’s Spider-Man series, where she portray’s Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) Aunt May.

And similarly to those in the MCU – asides from Peter, of course, Marisa has caused quite the stir on Twitter this week when a clip wishing her happy birthday went viral.

The account posted a seven second video which shows Marisa raising her leg in triumph before posing and smiling for the camera.

The caption read: “Happy 60th Birthday Marisa Tomei.”

And social media users couldn’t believe that the actor had reached her 60th milestone.

One person wrote: “What in the fountain of youth magic is this?”

Another fan said that her youthful good looks ‘needs to be investigated’, while others simply dubbed her the ‘hottest 60-year-old on the planet’.

Someone else gushed about their crush on the star, writing: “Now it looks like I’ll be in love with her until she’s in her mid-90s.”

Meanwhile, one commenter simply wrote: “Amazing.”

As difficult as it is to believe, Marisa was indeed born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York.

Happy 60th Birthday Marisa Tomei 🥳

After several small films, Marisa made it big for her performance in the 1992 film, My Cousin Vinny, which saw her crowned Best Supporting Actress at the 1993 Academy Awards.

In the 90s, she appeared in several sitcoms – from Seinfeld to The Simpsons – and later in the play, Wait Until Dark, in her Broadway debut in 1998.

Her performance in the 2001 movie, In The Bedroom, earned her a second Academy Award and her first Golden Globe Award nomination.

As for Marisa, she told NewBeauty Magazine earlier this year that she wasn’t bothered by the big 60 and that ‘it’s a silly thing to be quantified by’.

The Wrestler actor said: “My advice to my younger self is keep partying and keep having fun and do all the late nights and do everything that comes across your plate. That’s the time to do it, really.”

As for keeping her spritely glow, Marisa surprisingly ruled out using a myriad of skincare treatments.

She explained: “I don’t really do that. I just never got in the groove.

“As I’m getting older, I realize that I need it more, but I still have to work at making it more a part of my routine.”

However, she is impartial to a ‘good facial massage’ as she finds it helps ‘the facial muscles to fall into place’.

Just gonna jot that down, thanks.

List of worst airlines in the world in 2024 has been revealed with some surprises making the best list

The rankings have been made according to three main factors

We’ve all got travel providers we prefer for our own reasons, but now a definitive list of the best and worst airlines this year has been released and some of the results might surprise you.

The ranking of the world’s airlines has been calculated by flight compensation company AirHelp, which uses three factors to calculate which companies are providing the best services.

These factors include ‘on-time performance’, which tracks how many of an airline’s flights are on schedule; customer service, assessed by passenger ratings of the food, comfort, and crew of the airlines; and claim processing, which is how efficiently airlines handle claims and how likely they are to pay out compensation.

Using this data, AirHelp ranked 109 airlines with some surprising results, including one long-time winner being pushed off the top spot.

Top 10 Best Airlines

According to AirHelp’s rankings, the number one airline in the world this year was Brussels Airlines, which is headquartered in Belgium.

The airline flies to more than 100 places in Europe, North America and Africa, but last year it didn’t even make it to the top 10, instead coming in 12th place.

Clearly the staff at the airline have been doing something right, as its first-place ranking managed to push Qatar Airways into second place after holding the top spot since 2018.

The top 10 list also included well-known airlines United Airlines and American Airlines – two airlines that managed to maintain their places in the top spot for the third year running, despite major disruptions that impacted domestic airlines in the US over the last few months.

A priest who suffered a heart attack in 2016 says he briefly visited hell and went on to share his experience

A priest who claims to have visited hell has shared what it’s like down there, admitting he ‘wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy’.

In 2016, priest Gerald Johnson suffered a heart attack and briefly died as a result.

During this time, Johnson claims to have visited hell and some unexpected music was apparently playing there.

While it’s known that heavy metal music is sometimes used as a means of ‘torture’, it wasn’t Metallica that was playing down in hell.

Priest saw demons singing Rihanna songs in hell

According to Johnson is was Rihanna’s music that was being blasted out – her track ‘Umbrella’ in particular.

Taking to TikTok, Johnson explained that after seeing hell itself he ‘wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy’, and described exactly what he witnessed down there.

He said: “My spirit left my physical body and I thought that I was going upwards, because I thought I had done so much good in this lifetime and helped so many people and basically made decisions that were godly decisions.

“As opposed to going up I went down. There was a section in hell where music was playing and it was the same music that you hear on the Earth, but as opposed to entertainers singing it, demons were singing it.”

He went on: “It was some of the same lyrics that we hear here, I knew that on Earth a lot of the lyrics and the music and the songs are inspired by demons.

“Every lyric to every song is there to torment you as to the fact you didn’t worship god through music while you were on the Earth.”

Among the songs he says he heard demons singing as a means of tormenting people was ‘Umbrella’ by Rihanna, while the denizens of hell also had ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ by Bobby McFerrin in their repertoire.

While Rihanna’s music might be hellish for some, many of her devoted fans are crying out for the songstress to release her next album as she hasn’t released one since 2016.

She’s long been teasing what’s been dubbed as ‘R9’ and got fans hopes up when the ‘We Found Love’ singer said she wanted to drop the album by the end of 2023.

Fast forward to summer 2024 though and we’re still waiting.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight earlier this month, Rihanna said: “Now, I’m prepared to go back in the studio. […] I’m gonna start.”

The mom-of-two added that she’s ‘starting over’ with the album, but won’t be completely abandoning the songs that she’s made has already.

A singer was praised for her savage response after being heckled while singing the National Anthem.

On Thursday night, a teenager was scheduled to deliver her rendition of the country’s anthem at Madison Square Garden during a New York Knicks versus Charlotte Hornets game but was rudely interrupted by a heckler who shouted something from the audience.

While most would try and ignore the hater, the singer decided to call him out without even using any words.

A video of the moment has recently been going viral after it was posted to both Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).

The video starts with the girl singing the lyrics: “Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the-” before she is cut off by a man shouting something from the stands.

It is unclear what he said at the time, but the singer decided to stop singing altogether and turn to find the perpetrator with an unimpressed look on her face before recovering and continuing where she left off.

“O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming,” she could be heard saying as the crowd around her started cheering in support of her performance.

Knicks’ power forward Karl-Anthony Towns was also caught smiling at the reaction, much to everyone’s amusement.

“KAT’s reaction,” wrote one user alongside laughing emojis, while another added: “The side-eye. She forgot where she was for a sec, she said oh yeah lemme get back to this anthem.”

A third also added: “Glad she stopped gave him his 2 seconds he so desperately needed then continued in key!”

And this user also chimed in to state: “She was like oh hell nah… imma deal wit you after the performance lol.”

Others also took the time to praise the singer for her incredible performance.

“Kept going like a champ,” one Instagram user said and this person also added: “I was there! She had an amazing voice and the crowd went insane at the end of it!!!”

Another added: “The fact that she continued on like that is a top tier move ngl.”
