If The Deadly “Doomsday Glacier” Collapsed, It Would Have Severe Impact On The World

Regarding the “Doomsday Glacier,” experts have released yet another horrifying update, and things are not looking good.

The Thwaites Glacier, a sheet of ice about the size of Great Britain, is continuing to recede, scientists have warned.

Since 1850, the average annual increase in Earth’s temperature has been 0.11F, and the effects of global warming are beginning to show.

The primary problem is that between the 1990s and the 2010s, the amount of ice flowing from the glacier into the sea more than doubled.

The Thwaites Glacier, when combined with the surrounding area, is responsible for 8% of the present 4.6mm annual global sea level increase.

According to the most recent projections, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet may completely or significantly disappear from the ice pack in the twenty-third century.

Experts have stated that immediate action is now required to assist in slowing down this process.

This week, scientists from the US and the UK will gather at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in Cambridge to talk about their discoveries.

To explore if they can uncover more information about the future of the “Doomsday Glacier,” researchers plan to employ a mix of underwater robotics and other approaches.

If it all melted, sea levels would rise by 3.3 meters, resulting in global floods, habitat loss, and an increase in storm frequency.

Only in the UK, places like Hull, Peterborough, Portsmouth, portions of east London, and the Thames Estuary would be vulnerable to flooding.

Dr Rob Larter, from the Science Co-ordination of the ITGC and a marine geophysicist at BAS, said: “Thwaites has been retreating for more than 80 years, accelerating considerably over the past 30 years.”

“And our findings indicate it is set to retreat further and faster.”

“There is a consensus that Thwaites Glacier retreat will accelerate sometime within the next century.”

“However, there is also concern that additional processes revealed by recent studies, which are not yet well enough studied to be incorporated into large-scale models, could cause retreat to accelerate sooner.”

Dr. Ted Scambos, US science co-ordinator of the ITGC and glaciologist at the University of Colorado, added: “It’s concerning that the latest computer models predict continuing ice loss that will accelerate through the 22nd century and could lead to a widespread collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in the 23rd.

Voting Rules

Vote up the most disturbing deaths that Disney wouldn’t dare adapt.

Disney knows how to take a dark story and make it magical for all ages. Many of the fairy tales used as the source material for their most beloved movies have original endings that are much more Grimm than the happily ever afters we see on screen. From beloved characters being viciously murdered to them losing their lives in tragic ways, Disney films wisely rewrite how things turn out for the heroes and villains in the following stories, choosing to give children unrealistic expectations of happiness and true love instead of gruesome nightmares of horrifying deaths.

Be warned: some of the following movies will likely be tainted once you know how the stories really end for their characters.

Ariel From 'The Little Mermaid' Sacrifices Herself

1 Ariel From ‘The Little Mermaid’ Sacrifices Herself

The 1837 Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale ends with Prince Eric married to another woman, which leaves Ariel stuck as a human, unable to return to her family at sea. Her sisters bring her a dagger from the Sea Witch that will allow her to become a mermaid again. All she has to do is kill Eric and wash her feet in his blood:

Before the sun rises you must plunge it into the heart of the prince; when the warm blood falls upon your feet they will grow together again, and form into a fish’s tail, and you will be once more a mermaid, and return to us to live out your three hundred years before you die and change into the salt sea foam. Haste, then; he or you must die before sunrise.”

She can’t bring herself to do it, however, and instead jumps into the water, where her body dissolves into sea foam.

Quasimodo Dies Of Starvation Holding Esmeralda's Corpse In 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'

2 Quasimodo Dies Of Starvation Holding Esmeralda’s Corpse In ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’

In Victor Hugo’s original novel, Quasimodo watches as Esmeralda is hanged and then pushes Archdeacon Claude Frollo off of Notre Dame, killing him.

Years later, Quasimodo’s skeleton is found in a cemetery clutching Esmeralda’s:

[T]hey found among all those hideous carcasses two skeletons, one of which held the other in its embrace.

They quickly determine how Quasimodo died:

Moreover, there was no fracture of the vertebrae at the nape of the neck, and it was evident that he had not been hanged. Hence, the man to whom it had belonged had come thither and had died there. When they tried to detach the skeleton which he held in his embrace, he fell to dust.

Pinocchio Kills Jiminy Cricket With A Hammer

3 Pinocchio Kills Jiminy Cricket With A Hammer

In the 1883 novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, the Talking Cricket (renamed Jiminy Cricket for the Disney film) pushes Pinocchio to murder after implying he was lazy:

At these last words, Pinocchio jumped up in a fury, took a hammer from the bench, and threw it with all his strength at the Talking Cricket.

Perhaps he did not think he would strike it. But, sad to relate, my dear children, he did hit the Cricket, straight on its head.

With a last weak “cri-cri-cri” the poor Cricket fell from the wall, dead!

Nala From 'The Lion King' Drowns

4 Nala From ‘The Lion King’ Drowns

The Lion King is heavily influenced by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with Simba playing the part of the titular prince. Similarities include a prince’s uncle killing his father to become king, his father returning as a ghost, and the new king ordering his minions to murder his nephew.

In the play, however, Hamlet’s love interest, Ophelia (the analogue for Nala in The Lion King), goes mad after her father’s death, climbs a willow tree, and falls into a brook where she drowned. She is described as looking “incapable of her own distress,” implying that the drowning might not have been accidental.

Hercules Is Tricked Into Killing Megara And Their Children

5 Hercules Is Tricked Into Killing Megara And Their Children

In the Greek tragedy Heracles, Hercules comes back from the Twelve Labors and kills Lycus, which angers the gods. Hera – who in this version hates Hercules – infects him with madness using Lyssa, the goddess of rage and fury. Hercules blindly murders his wife Megara and their children. When he comes to his senses, he’s overwhelmed with sadness at what he has done.

Peter Pan May Have Killed Some Of The Lost Boys

6 Peter Pan May Have Killed Some Of The Lost Boys

In the original novel Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie, it’s heavily implied that Peter Pan killed some Lost Boys who grow up:

The boys on the island vary, of course, in numbers, according as they get killed and so on; and when they seem to be growing up, which is against the rules, Peter thins them out.

Maui From 'Moana' Is Crushed To Death By A Vagina

7 Maui From ‘Moana’ Is Crushed To Death By A Vagina

According to Māori mythology, the shapeshifting demigod Māui ultimately meets his match when he goes up up against the goddess of death, Hine-nui-te-pō.

While Hine-nui-te-pō sleeps with her legs spread, Māui turns into a worm or lizard and crawls up inside of her. His plan is to then exit out of her mouth, which would somehow make humans immortal. Some birds, however, laugh too hard at the sight, causing Hine-nui-te-pō to wake up and crush Māui to death with a set of obsidian teeth inside her vagina.

Tarzan Kills Kerchak (After Kerchak Killed Tarzan's Father)

8 Tarzan Kills Kerchak (After Kerchak Killed Tarzan’s Father)

In the 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes, Kerchak is actually responsible for orphaning Tarzan. He kills Tarzan’s father in a fit of rage, and Kala saves the one-year-old from a similar fate. She adopts him and changes his name from John Clayton II to Tarzan (“White Skin”).

As Tarzan grows up with the apes, he learns how to properly defend himself, which angers Kerchak. The two then fight to the death, with Tarzan winning and becoming the next king of the apes.

Lady Tremaine Eats Cinderella's Stepsister And Then Dies From Shock

9 Lady Tremaine Eats Cinderella’s Stepsister And Then Dies From Shock

The ancient Vietnamese fairy tale, The Story of Tấm and Cám, shares many similarities with Cinderella, but the fate of her stepmother and stepsisters is much more sinister in it.

In it, Tam (this version’s Cinderella) boils her stepsister Cam to death out of jealousy, then pickles her skin in a jar and sends it to her stepmother.

Thinking the food is a present, the stepmother decides to eat it. A crow then tries to warn her what was actually in the jar:

What a tasty dish! Mother eating daughter. If you have any left, please give me some.

The stepmother, however, continues eating – until she finds her daughter’s skull at the bottom of the jar. She then abruptly dies from shock.

Fagin From 'Oliver & Company' Is Hanged For Complicity In A Murder

10Fagin From ‘Oliver & Company’ Is Hanged For Complicity In A Murder

Oliver & Company (whose trailer called it “the classic story of Oliver with a Disney twist”) is loosely based on the Charles Dickens novel, using some similar plotlines and character names. One of the biggest differences, however, is changing the character of thief Fagin from a villain into a misunderstood hero.

In the novel, Fagin is hanged for his involvement in the murder of Nancy (the character Rita is based on in the movie) at the hands of the evil Sikes.

The Evil Queen From 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' Is Forced To Dance To Death

11 The Evil Queen From ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Is Forced To Dance To Death

In the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Snow White and the Prince get their revenge on her stepmother, the Evil Queen, by placing red-hot iron shoes on her feet and forcing her to dance herself to death.

Rob Gronkowski’s $45,000,000 net worth had surprise boost decade after forgetting about $69,000 Apple investment

Gronk admits he had ‘no idea’ what he was doing when he first made the investment

When was the last time you remembered something you did years ago?

It’s usually embarrassing, like that awkward comment you made on a first date which completely killed the vibe. Or maybe it’s something stupid, like accidentally leaving the oven on and almost burning the house down.

Either way, it’s unlikely anything you did led you to gain a significant amount of money.

But NFL legend Rob Gronkowski found himself in quite the opposite situation.

Back in 2014, he invested $69,000 in Apple stock on the advice of the man who’d built his house.

Gronk – as he’s better known – admits he had ‘no idea’ what he was doing, and told Fortune: “I [had] never been involved in stocks. I really didn’t know how stocks work. So I was like, ‘All right, let me do this, man.'”

While that’s a significant amount of money for the average person to risk, it’s practically loose change to Gronk.

The tight end has earned millions throughout his career – including a six-year $54 million contract with multi Super Bowl winning New England Patriots.

Anyway, Gronk forgot all about the investment until some two and a half years later.

And to be fair, when your net worth is $45 million, I’m sure it’s easily done.

Gronk’s money had more than tripled to $250,000 when he finally checked in on it. And today, it’s worth more than half a million dollars, providing a nice little boost to his net worth.

Gronk says: “Now to this day, I have over $600,000 in Apple stock, all because of the investment I made in 2014 having no idea what I was doing, but just listening to the guy that built my house here in New England.”

And Gronk is certainly grateful for the financial advice.

He added: “Let me tell you, he built my house, and he gave all the money back to me by telling me to invest in Apple.”

While Gronk may not have known much about stocks and shares, he’s always been sensible with his money.

Over the course of his 11 seasons in the NFL, he earned an impressive $70 million in salary. However, according to his 2015 autobiography It’s Good to Be Gronk, he didn’t touch one penny of his fortune.

Instead, he lived off endorsement money from brand deals, thought to be worth tens of millions of dollars.

His off-field brand deals have included Dunkin’ Donuts, T-Mobile, and USAA.

How to know if someone is making the noise that means they have less than 24 hours left to live

Hospice nurse Julie McFadden has revealed what to do when you hear the noise A hospice nurse has revealed what you should do if you hear a noise which indicates someone has less than 24 hours to live.

Nothing hurts more than watching a loved one slowly wither away, with your last moments together being the most precious.

And when a person is just hours away from the end of their life, sometimes they will make a noise which sounds very scary if you don’t know what it is.

Thankfully, nurse Julie McFadden is here to reassure you that the sound – known as the ‘death rattle’ – is completely normal.

What is the ‘death rattle’?

Taking to her YouTube channel Hospice Nurse Julie, the 42-year-old from California, US, has explained what the death rattle is, and why it usually happens 24 hours before someone dies.

“It’s actually called terminal secretions. Many people think that the sound that they’re hearing at the end of their loved one’s life is coming from the lungs,” she said in a video from last year.

“So many people think their loved one’s drowning or this must be really hard for them, when, in reality, all it is is a little bit of secretion that is building up in their loved one’s mouth.

“Now, why is this happening? It’s happening because all of us are creating saliva throughout the day, and we’re unconsciously swallowing it all day long, just like right now.

“But at the end of life, our mouths are still creating saliva, which is good because it’s keeping the mouth moist, but our brain is no longer having us swallow that saliva, so it’s collecting a little bit in the mouth.”

What does the ‘death rattle’ sound like?

The death rattle happens to be a very distinctive sound, which is sometimes difficult to identify.

When someone breathes, and the saliva builds up in their mouth, they make a ‘crackling, wet noise’.

It basically makes a gurgling or snoring sound that gets progressively louder as breathing becomes more irregular.

“And then with each breath, it’s causing a gurgling sound because the breath is going over the saliva,” McFadden added.

What can we do about the ‘death rattle?’

Although it sounds awful, the nurse said it’s ‘no big deal’ and that there are ‘things we can do’.

“Positioning can help. So having your loved one sit up, or even turning your loved one over so the saliva comes out, or medication we can always give to dry the mouth out,” she said.

“I’m not particularly into the medication, because I feel like then it gives the loved one dry mouth, but it is something we can do if it’s really bothering the family.”

Heard welcomed her first child, Oonagh, in April 2021

Amber Heard is pregnant with her second child following her public split from Johnny Depp in 2016.

After Heard and Depp went their separate ways, Heard went on to welcome her first child, Oonagh, in April 2021.

She shared the news that she had given birth to Oonagh in a post on Instagram, in which she explained she had decided to have a baby on her ‘own terms’.

Alongside a picture of herself and Oonagh, Heard wrote: “I’m so excited to share this news with you. Four years ago, I decided I wanted to have a child. I wanted to do it on my own terms.

“I now appreciate how radical it is for us as women to think about one of the most fundamental parts of our destinies in this way. I hope we arrive at a point in which it’s normalized to not want a ring in order to have a crib. A part of me wants to uphold that my private life is none of anyone’s business. I also get that the nature of my job compels me to take control of this. My daughter was born on April 8, 2021. Her name is Oonagh Paige Heard. She’s the beginning of the rest of my life.”

Heard, who is 38 years old, has since shared periodic updates into life with her daughter, describing herself in posts as ‘the mom and the dad’ as well as a ‘multitasking mama‘.

Celebrating her first birthday with a post on Instagram, Heard wrote of her daughter: “My little O is a year old today. I still can’t believe you’re here. The greatest year .”

With Oonagh now three years old, Heard has now apparently decided to expand her family once again.

A spokesperson for the Aquaman actor confirmed the news of her second pregnancy in a statement to People, saying: “It is still quite early in the pregnancy, so you will appreciate that we do not want to go into much detail at this stage. Suffice to say that Amber is delighted both for herself and Oonagh Paige.”

When Heard spoke in front of jurors during her trial with Depp in 2022, she said she was keen to ‘move on’ after her split from Depp, and be able to focus more on her role as a parent.

“I have a baby. I have to move on. I want to move on, and I want Johnny to move on too,” she said.

Adult Acne: I’m a Decade Past Puberty — Why Am I Still Breaking Out?

Adult Acne: I’m a Decade Past Puberty — Why Am I Still Breaking Out?

Adult Acne: I’m a Decade Past Puberty — Why Am I Still Breaking Out?

You may have adult acne if you have a genetic predisposition, changing hormone levels, certain bacteria, or irritation from skin or hair products. Treatment typically depends on the cause.

Though it most often occurs during puberty, acne affects adults as well. Adult acne appears to affect females more oftenTrusted Source than males.

Adult acne can be mild, moderate, or severe:
  • Mild adult acne may consist of blackheads, whiteheads, or small pustules.
  • Moderate adult acne might also include papules, which cover between one-quarter and three-quarters of the face or body.
  • Severe adult acne often involves extreme redness or other discoloration, swelling, irritation, and deep cysts.

Adult acne vs. rosacea

You might notice another condition, rosacea, referred to as “adult acne.” But rosacea differs from classic acne in a few key ways.

With rosacea, the bumps are usually smaller, and appear all at once, in cycles.

Here’s everything you need to know about adult acne and how to treat it.

“Acne is an issue where the skin and pores are not functioning properly,” explains Dr. Robin Schaffran, chief dermatologist and co-founder of BalmLabs, a skin care line designed for adult acne.

“Oil is being overproduced by the sebaceous glands, and the pores aren’t effective in eliminating the oil. This causes the pores to clog, which ultimately leads to blackheads, whiteheads, and ‘pimples,’” Schaffran says.

A few different factorsTrusted Source can play a part.

Family history

Some people have a genetic predisposition for acne.

“Usually, when someone presents with acne, someone in the family has also experienced breakouts, either as a teen or adult,” Schaffran says.

This person doesn’t have to be your parent or sibling, either. It might be a more distant relative, such as an uncle, aunt, or cousin.

Changing hormone levels

Fluctuating or excessive sex hormones can lead to changes throughout your body and skin, including:

  • pH imbalance
  • inflammation
  • differences in circulation
  • excessive production of oil (sebum)

These changes often play a part in the development of adult acne.

Remember that fluctuations in your hormones don’t necessarily translate to imbalanced or irregular hormone levels, according to Schaffran. Rather, your skin might respond to the typical hormonal fluctuations that characterize periods like puberty or perimenopause.

Hormonal acne usually appears as deep and cyst-like, and it’s often tender or painful.

“If you suspect you might have some hormonal abnormality, like abnormal menses or excess hair growth, it can be helpful to have a dermatologist evaluate further and treat accordingly,” Schaffran notes.

Contact irritation

Anything that irritates your skin, from harsh cleansers to razors on dry skin, can lower your skin’s defenses and cause a protective reaction that leads to inflammation.

Hair and skin products

Oil-based products designed for use on hair and skin can potentially trigger acne breakouts.

Examples include:

  • shampoo and conditioner
  • styling products
  • leave-in conditioners
  • makeup
  • face creams and moisturizers

“Usually, this is only with oily or highly comedogenic products,” Schaffran notes.

Emotional stress

Stress can create biological changes in the body that can worsen adult acne.

For example, when you feel scared, anxious, or pressured, your adrenal glands make more of the stress hormone cortisol. This can lead to increased sebum production, which can make acne worse.

Physical stress

Physical strain on your body can also trigger hormonal changes, weakened immunity, and inflammation — any of which can worsen acne.

Potential causes include:

  • lack of sleep
  • illness
  • dehydration
  • exposure to environmental irritants, including air pollution

People who smoke are also more likely to have adult acne.

Clogged pores

Excess oil can clog pores, and a rapid turnover of skin cells can lead to backed-up hair follicles. In both cases, you’ll usually experience acne as a result.

Bacteria

Bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes can cause acne when present in the skin, especially when the bacteria buildup.

The bacteria accumulate under the skin and can’t always be reached through surface cleansing. In other words, you can’t remove it simply by washing your face. It requires treatment with an oral antibiotic.

Foods

Many people believe that excessive white flour products, sweets, chocolate, dairy, and fast food may contribute to adult acne. That said, experts haven’t come to any conclusionsTrusted Source on whether specific foods can cause breakouts.

“There is no good science that has demonstrated that eating sugar leads to acne breakouts, despite many studies looking at this issue. In my practice, I can show you many patients who eat clean diets and still experience terrible acne, along with many patients who eat nothing but junk food and have acne-free skin,” Schaffran says.

Still, you may notice a pattern of acne after eating certain foods, so a dermatologist might recommend keeping a food diary to identify potential triggers.

Some evidence suggests that a diet high in high glycemic foods and cow’s milk may worsen acne.

Medications

Some medicationsTrusted Source may increase the risk of adult acne breakouts, including:

  • certain corticosteroids
  • antidepressants
  • epilepsy medications

Although many people use hormonal birth control pills to help treat adult acne, specific formulations may also cause it. A healthcare professional can offer guidance on choosing a hormonal contraceptive that meets your needs.

Undiagnosed medical conditions

Some health and skin conditions can resemble acne or lead to acne breakouts.

Examples include:

  • rosacea
  • keratosis pilaris
  • perioral dermatitis
  • Cushing syndrome
  • polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

If you suspect an underlying medical condition could be triggering your acne, it’s best to contact a healthcare professional for more guidance.

Treating adult acne

“Working with a dermatologist is a good idea whenever acne has become unmanageable and creates emotional distress or when over-the-counter products aren’t helping,” Schaffran says. “A good dermatologist can evaluate what type of skin you have and what type of acne you have and put you on a skin care regimen tailored to your specific needs.”

Potential treatments for adult acne include home remedies, over-the-counter (OTC) products, and prescriptions. Results can vary from person to person, and not all types of acne treatment will work for everyone.

Sometimes, OTC remedies might work quickly — but if they don’t provide the results you want after a week or two, it’s generally best to get professional support.

A dermatologist or other healthcare professional can help determine whether a prescription might work better.

Home remedies

Home remedies for adult acne include oral supplements and topical treatments you apply directly to your skin.

Some examples include:

  • aloe vera
  • green tea extract
  • tea tree oil
  • zinc
  • vitamin A
  • probiotics

Schaffran says many home remedies aren’t particularly helpful, especially for extensive or deep acne.

“Some home remedies, such as apple cider vinegar, toothpaste, and lemon juice, can actually damage the skin barrier, leading to further irritation and rashes,” Schaffran explains.

She does note that warm compresses can be somewhat effective for deep cystic acne.

Medical treatment

OTC and prescription-strength medications that treat adult acne include:

  • hydroxy acids and other beneficial acids
  • oral birth control pills
  • spironolactone
  • antibiotics, including sarecycline (Seysara)
  • retinol, or its prescription form, retin-A
  • salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
  • sulfur
  • blue light therapy
  • clascoterone (Winlevi), a topical cream designed to act on the hormones in your skin to help prevent breakouts
  • oral isotretinoin
Adult acne on the body

Some people with adult acne may experience breakouts on other parts of the body. Common locations can include:

  • back
  • chest
  • upper arms
  • shoulders
  • buttocks

Treating acne on other areas of the body can depend on the severity and how deep the acne is. You may be able to treat mild to moderate body acne with at-home treatment, such as cleansers and topical products. But for severe acne, you may need treatment options prescribed by a dermatologist.

Hormonal factors in adulthood

Hormonal changes can continue throughout your 20s and 30s as your body adjusts to adulthood.

Changing hormone levels that contribute to adult acne can also happen as a result of:

  • PCOS
  • your menstrual cycle
  • stopping hormonal birth control, or changing your brand or type of pill
  • high testosterone levels
  • pregnancy and childbirth
  • nursing
  • menopause
  • perimenopause
  • andropause

You can ask a healthcare professional about possible tests and age-specific recommendations for hormonal acne.

Preventing adult acne

There’s a process to effectively treating and preventing adult acne:

  • Be diligent about your skin care routine: “The best tip for treating current breakouts and preventing future ones is to get yourself into a regular skin care routine using topical ingredients appropriate for your skin type,” says Schaffran.
  • Moisturize properly: Schaffran says many people prone to acne tend to skip the moisturizing step since they’ve been conditioned to believe that drying out breakouts is the only way to treat them. “In fact, excessive dryness can actually exacerbate acne and propel a continuous breakout cycle.”
  • Be patient: Change won’t happen overnight. “Too many people give up too early and don’t give the solution time to effectively work and generate results,” Schaffran notes. “Far too often, people get frustrated and switch from product to product, but I promise you… consistency and a little patience are key to any acne treatment regimen.”
  • Take care of your physical health: Steps like minimizing stress, eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, exercising regularly, and getting plenty of sleep can make a difference in getting relief from adult acne.

While some triggers are hard to avoid, you have plenty of options for treatment.

But some treatments from your teenage years may have less effect now that you’ve reached adulthood. Switching to acne treatments designed for adult skin could make a big difference.

“Adult skin is often more sensitive and prone to dryness and irritation,” Schaffran explains. “So harsh ingredients commonly used in traditional acne-fighting topicals, such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, are often not tolerated well in adult skin.”

Why do I still have acne in my 20s, 30s, or 40s?

You may experience adult acne due to a genetic predisposition, changing hormone levels, certain bacteria, or irritation from skin or hair products. Treating adult acne can depend on the cause.

What’s the best way to treat adult acne?

Dermatologists are often able to recommend treatment options to reduce or clear adult acne. The specific treatment can depend on the cause. Treatments can include oral medications such as antibiotics or birth control pills, topical treatments, and skin procedures like blue light therapy.

How do I know if my acne is bacterial or hormonal?

A dermatologist can conduct tests to determine the cause of your acne and recommend an effective treatment.

The bottom line

Maybe you never expected to still have acne, long after leaving your teenage years in the dust. But you’re not alone — and you have plenty of options for treatment.

If OTC products don’t do much to improve your breakouts, a dermatologist can offer more guidance on a skin care routine and treatment approach that fits your unique skin needs.

Elon Musk Criticizes F-35 Fighter Jet’s “Terrible Design” and Emphasizes the Future of UAVs

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceXTesla, and X, has recently made headlines with strong criticism of the F-35 fighter jet, calling its design “terrible.” Musk voiced his concerns about the future of manned fighter jets on November 25th, arguing that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are the true future of air combat.

The F-35: A Flawed and Expensive Design

In his comments, Musk stated, “Manned fighter jets are obsolete in the age of drones. These weapons will only result in pilot casualties.” His remarks were particularly aimed at the F-35, a cutting-edge fighter jet developed by Lockheed Martin and introduced in 2015. Musk criticized the F-35’s design, claiming that it was flawed from the start, primarily because it was required to perform too many roles for various branches of the military.

F-35’s Capabilities and Challenges

Musk further elaborated, “The F-35’s design was a disaster from the beginning because it was designed to do too many things for too many forces.” He described the F-35 as an expensive and complex weapon that is capable of performing various tasks but excels at none. Despite being touted as one of the most advanced stealth jets in the world, capable of intelligence gathering, the F-35 has faced numerous challenges during its development, including software issues and high operating costs, which have led to frequent criticism.

Recently, countries such as GermanyPolandFinland, and Romania have entered contracts to purchase the F-35. However, the jet has faced significant delays and cost overruns, making it one of the most expensive fighter jets globally. According to Mauro Gilli, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, the primary costs of the F-35 stem from its software and electronic systems, not its pilots. Gilli argued that a reusable drone could potentially feature similar capabilities as the F-35, making it a more cost-effective alternative.

The Strategic Impact of the F-35’s Existence

Furthermore, Gilli pointed out that the F-35’s existence has forced adversaries like Russia and China to develop advanced aircraft and radar systems to compete. “The mere existence of the F-35 and the B-1 bomber has pressured other nations into making strategic choices they otherwise wouldn’t have made,” said Gilli. He also warned that eliminating the F-35 program could relieve pressure on these nations to develop competing weapons systems.

Cost and Flight Hour Reductions for the F-35

In April, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report revealing that the U.S. military plans to reduce flight hours for the F-35. This decision follows a Pentagon estimate that the lifetime cost of the F-35 program, including purchaseoperation, and maintenance, could exceed $2 trillion over the coming decades.

While Musk’s comments spark debate about the future of military aviation, they also raise important questions about the direction of defense spending and the potential for UAVs to replace traditional manned jets. As the F-35 continues to face scrutiny, the shift towards unmanned aircraft may become an increasingly prominent aspect of future air combat strategies.

CCTV reveals suspect’s key movements just before killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

The gunman has been spotted on CCTV before and after shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Thompson, 50, was shot after exiting the Hilton Hotel on Wednesday (December 4) at 6.46am in Manhattan, New York City, where he’d been to attend a investor’s conference hosted by the company, which was later cancelled following the shooting.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the gunman appeared to have been ‘lying in wait’ for the 50-year-old before unloading several bullets into him from behind, arguing that this attack ‘does not appear to be a random act of violence’.

Thompson was shot at least once in his back and right calf – while the bullets and casings reportedly had the words ‘deny’, ‘depose’ and ‘defend’ inscribed on them, according to police sources from ABC News and The New York Post.

He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in a critical condition but was later pronounced dead upon arrival.

None of Thompson’s belongings were taken from his person and a motive is yet to be determined by police, although his wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that she was aware that there have been threats made against him.

“I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.” she said.

Cops are now focusing on surveillance footage that details the suspect’s key movements just before fatally shooting Thompson.

CCTV footage shows him pictured at a nearby Starbucks with his mask low enough to reveal part of his nose – which investigators are now putting through facial recognition software in a bid to find a match, the BBC reports.

According to the New York Post, the suspect fled on foot down a nearby alleyway before returning to 6th Avenue, where the shooting took place, a little further up the street when he hopped on an electric bike.

He then cycles north on 6th Avenue towards Central Park before entering it – where he was last seen at 6.48am.

However, according to police, this is where the CCTV footage gets a bit grainy, The New York Post reports.

Establishing a timeline of events, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny told CNN that the gunman walked towards Thompson and ‘continues to shoot’, adding: “It appears the gun malfunctions as he clears the jam and begins to fire again.”

Former FBI special agent, Terry Rankhorn, later told Sky News that the malfunction was likely a result of a ‘mismatch between between the 9mm silencer used and what was likely subsonic ammunition.”

Acting Secret Service director vows ‘accountability’ over Trump assassination attempt

Ronald Rowe told lawmakers a main goal is to “rebuild public trust.”

Accountability for the members of the Secret Service who were at fault for the July 13 assassination attempt against President-elect Donald Trump is “occurring,” acting Director of the Secret Service Ronald Rowe told a House task force investigating the incident on Thursday.

“All disciplinary measures are imposed to promote the efficiency of the Secret Service and to encourage behaviors and principles that ensure the success of the agency’s mission,” he testified.

“Employees receiving proposals of discipline will be provided due process under agency policy as well as any applicable laws and regulations. But, let me be clear, there will be accountability, and that accountability is occurring. Consistent with applicable laws and regulations, I cannot comment further on specific disciplinary actions underway or being considered.”

At the same time, he said, the agency should not be defined by one failure.

A Secret Service Mission Assurance report was released earlier in the year, along with a Department of Homeland Security independent review and a Senate report.

Rowe testified that since becoming director he has focused on preventing another July 13 shooting from happening again.

In his memo, he said the Secret Service increased its staffing levels on the president-elect’s detail, expanding the use of drones at venues, expanding counter-drone technology at venues, addressing the faulty radio issue by working with the Defense Department, using other federal law enforcement agencies to help with protective visits and expanding the ballistic countermeasures at Secret Service protected events.

At the president-elect’s residences, the Secret Service has worked with state and local partners to bolster security and use cutting-edge technology to do so.

“My goal is to improve our mission effectiveness and rebuild public trust,” Rowe said. “One of the key systemic changes was the directive to mandate a unified command in a singular location for all protective sites, something that was not done on July 13th in Butler. This co-location enhances our communications and intelligence-sharing mechanisms with state, local and federal partners to better anticipate threats and respond to them more swiftly.”

Rowe testified that he has also prioritized the mental health of agents, adding a chief wellness officer just this week.

“While I cannot undo the harm that has been done, I am committed to doing everything in my power to ensure that the Secret Service never has a failure like this again.”
