A week of fierce pro-European Union protests have choked the capital Tbilisi.
LONDON — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday announced sanctions on 19 members of the Georgian government, who he accused of “surrendering” the country to Russian control.
Zelenskyy’s announcement came after seven nights of massive anti-government protests in the small South Caucasus nation, bordered by Russia to the north and Turkey to the southeast. Pro-Western demonstrators accuse the Georgian Dream government of rigging October’s parliamentary elections with Russian backing.
The protests began last week after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that Georgia would suspend European Union membership talks. The country’s long-held ambition to join the bloc is widely popular among Georgians across the political spectrum and is enshrined in the national constitution.
“These sanctions target the part of the Georgian government that is surrendering Georgia to Putin,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.

Among those sanctioned are Kobakhidze and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili — the founder and chairman of Georgia Dream, who is widely considered the real power behind the party. Ivanishvili, who is Georgia’s richest person, made his fortune in Russia.
“This is how it works in international affairs: if you do not respond in time or fail to respond with principle, then decades are lost, and countries are robbed of their freedom,” Zelenskyy wrote.
“We must not lose anyone in this region — neither Georgia, nor Moldova, nor Ukraine,” he added. “We must stand united in defending ourselves against Moscow.”
Zelenskyy also urged “Europe, America and everyone in the world to do the same — to act with principle.”
Major protests continued in the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Wednesday night despite violent clashes with security forces and mass arrests. Protesters again gathered outside the parliament building on the main Rustaveli Avenue thoroughfare, launching fireworks at the building and at police lines.
Police, meanwhile, continued to use tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators. Security forces wielding clubs sporadically charged protesters to force back crowds and make arrests.
Police also detained opposition leaders away from the protests. The Coalition for Change opposition party said Wednesday that police raided its offices and detained leader Nika Gvaramia. The party published a video showing several officers dragging Gvaramia into a car.

Kobakhidze said of anti-opposition raids, “I wouldn’t call this repression; it is more of a preventive measure than repression.”
The prime minister accused opposition leaders of “systematically” supplying “pyrotechnics” to protesters. “This is absolutely clear,” he said.
Opposition leaders — among them President Salome Zourabichvili — have vowed to continue their protests. Zourabichvili said she would not leave office when her term expires later this month. The president said she would not take instruction from the new parliament formed after the disputed October elections, which she said is illegitimate.
The opposition wants the Georgian Dream government to step down. Leaders hope the protest movement can snowball into a general strike.
Zourabichvili on Thursday thanked Zelenskyy for the sanctions. “I could not say it better,” the president wrote in a post to X. “Russia is trying to get back the control over the Black Sea.”
Georgian opposition leaders have long called on the West to be more assertive in supporting their EU and NATO membership ambitions — and in curtailing Russian influence in the country. Russia occupies around 20% of Georgia via local separatist client states, a situation cemented by Moscow’s victory in the 2008 Russo-Georgian war.
The U.S. State Department this week condemned what it said was “excessive use of force by police against Georgians” and announced it would suspend the U.S.-Georgia Strategic Partnership due to “anti-democratic actions” by the Georgian Dream government.
“We reiterate our call to the Georgian government to return to its Euro-Atlantic path, transparently investigate all parliamentary election irregularities, and repeal anti-democratic laws that limit freedoms of assembly and expression,” spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

The EU’s new foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said the bloc stands “with the Georgian people and their choice for a European future.”
“We condemn the violence against protesters and regret signals from ruling party not to pursue Georgia’s path to EU and democratic backsliding of the country,” Kallas wrote in a post to X. “This will have direct consequences from EU side.”
Russian officials have denied any active support of Georgian Dream, while also threatening consequences for the country if it continues its Westward geopolitical pivot.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists Monday that Russia “has not interfered and does not intend to interfere” in events, saying the government in Tbilisi was merely taking necessary steps to restore order.
Dmitry Medvedev — formerly Russia’s president and prime minister, now serving as the deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council — wrote on Telegram that Georgia was “moving rapidly along the Ukrainian path, into the dark abyss.”
Medvedev — who has become known for his hawkish foreign policy rhetoric — framed the protests as an attempted “revolution,” which he said would end “very badly.”
People are calling for Hawk Tuah Girl to be jailed after she launches cryptocurrency that everyone lost their money on
Haliey Welch released her very own meme coin on December 4
Hawk Tuah Girl is facing criticism after released her own cryptocurrency.
Haliey Welch found viral fame over the summer following her NSFW comments about ‘what makes a guy go crazy in bed’, with her reply earning her the name of ‘Hawk Tuah Girl’.
She’s since garnered almost three million Instagram followers and released her own podcast.
Now, Haliey has further broadened her horizons and debuted her own meme coin called HAWK.
HAWK coin became available yesterday (December 4), and it quickly rose to a peak market cap of $490 million.
But it faced an eye-water 91 per cent downturn in just a three-hour period, CoinTelegraph reports, and was trading at a valuation of $41.7 million.
Now, those who purchased some of the viral star’s cryptocurrency have been left out of pocket, and understandably, they’re not happy about the fiasco.
One person took to Twitter to claim that they’d bought $35,000 worth of coin, but it to be worth just $2,000 ten minutes later.
Haliey Welch has received a lot of backlash in the wake of HAWK coin crashing (@HalieyWelchX/Twitter)
“I am a huge fan of Hawk Tuah but you took my life savings,” they penned to Haliey on the social media platform. “I purchased your coin $Hawk that you were so excited about with my life savings and children’s college education fund as well.
“You didn’t mention that you were going to buy 97% of the supply and sell it almost immediately to make a large profit.”
Another person said: “So… it turns out the Hawk Tauh crypto meme coin was not a good investment.”
Meanwhile, others claimed Haliey ‘rug-pulled’ those who invested in HAWK coin.
“I only there was a way that Hawk Tuah Girl could find a way to quickly make tens of millions of dollars on the internet to pay back everyone that got rug-pulled on her meme coin,” someone wrote.
Hi @HalieyWelchX My $35,000 that I purchased of $Hawk is now $2,000 after 10 minutes of buying. I am a huge fan of Hawk Tuah but you took my life savings. I purchased your coin $Hawk that you were so excited about with my life savings and children’s college education fund as…
A second said: “We live in a weird timeline. @HalieyWelchX aka “Hawk Tuah” girl using her popularity created a meme coin on Solana blockchain. Then rug pulled the investors. Is this legal?”
Others went as far as suggesting that the viral star-turned-podcaster should face legal consequences for the debacle – with some even claiming she ‘deserves to be in jail right now’.
While several have accused Haliey of shorting her fans, she has denied any wrong doing.
“Hawkanomics: Team hasn’t sold one token and not 1 KOL was given 1 free token,” she tweeted in a copy and pasted message.
“We tried to stop snipers as best we could through high fee’s in the start of launch on @MeteoraAG. Fee’s have now been dropped.”
Dolton ‘supermayor’ Tiffany Henyard is running for re-election
Dolton, Illinois Mayor Henyard says she’ll seek to arrest political opponents as she faces eviction

Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard will be losing some of her political power after a historic caucus Tuesday night.
The Illinois “super mayor” lost the Democratic nomination for Thornton Township supervisor, a position Henyard currently holds. Henyard’s name was not even on the ballot because she did not have a certified assessor on her ticket. All nominees are required to have eight people on their slate: supervisor, highway director, clerk, assessor, and four trustees.
Instead, Illinois state senator and Thornton Township Democratic committeeman Napoleon Harris overwhelmingly won the nomination. The caucus and its results enraged Henyard later that night.
Tiffany Henyard, the scandal-plagued Democratic mayor of Dolton, was removed from the ballot for Thornton Township supervisor.
“You didn’t run none of this the right way,” Henyard was heard saying after the caucus. “Illegal, Napoleon.”

As committeeman, Harris made the decision to move from a primary to a caucus, the first caucus Thornton Township’s Democratic Party has had in decades. The party also announced that night that supervisor nominees cannot run for other positions.
Harris denied the process was unfair and insisted voters had their say.
“People in Thornton Township may be new to caucuses because they haven’t had them in a while, but this has been the tradition for many other townships around the state,” Harris said.
Henyard is currently running for re-election despite several scandals against her.
Henyard can still be on the ballot in April for Thornton Township supervisor as a write-in or independent candidate, but so far, she has not shown any indication of running that way. However, after losing the nomination, Henyard was heard shouting that she would be suing everyone involved in the process.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mayor Henyard’s office for comment.
Henyard is currently running for re-election as Dolton mayor as she faces several ongoing scandals for allegedly embezzling funds and politically targeting her opponents. Her office also faced an investigation by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Lightfoot’s investigation into the Village of Dolton’s financial situation revealed in a preliminary report that Dolton’s general fund balance was $5.61 million in 2022, but by May 2024 the balance had dropped to a deficit of $3.65 million.
Tiffany Henyard is facing multiple accusations of embezzlement and corruption.
Lightfoot also disclosed that Henyard used the village credit card to make purchases at Amazon, Target, Walgreens, Wayfair and other retailers. One jaw-dropping statement revealed that the embattled mayor had dropped $33,000 on Jan. 5, 2023, on Amazon.

Suspect Benjamin Robert Williams in 2021, left, and after his arrest in November 2024.
Eleni Peca’s phone buzzed with a call she had feared would never come.
The man accused of killing her only child, Joana Peca, three years ago in St. Petersburg, Florida, had finally been captured.
US Marshals arrested him in Mexico City after a TikTok user recognized him from a photo in a video, said the detective on the other end of the line.
The suspect, Benjamin Robert “Bambi” Williams, had just been extradited to the United States, police told her. Authorities had waited until he was in custody in Pinellas County to notify her family.
Peca was in disbelief when she got the call Friday from detective Brian Bilbrey of the St. Petersburg Police Department. Overwhelmed with emotion, she excused herself to gather her thoughts.
“I can’t explain the feeling I had that moment. It was the combination of happiness and pain,” she said at a news conference Tuesday. “I remember going like, ‘Oh my God, oh my God! Are you sure?’ I was going back and forth around the house.”
For Peca and her family, the arrest was a glimmer of hope after more than three years of heartbreak and uncertainty. Police said Williams shot Joana Peca in the face on July 31, 2021, as she sat in the driver’s seat of her parked van at a St. Petersburg cemetery.
She was holding her four-month-old boy in her arms when it happened, police said. Her older son, then 4, witnessed the shooting from the backseat. Peca was Williams’ ex-girlfriend, and the younger child is his, authorities said.
In past interviews, Eleni Peca had recounted the 4-year-old’s desperate efforts to save his mother. When she picked the children up from the police station that day, she said the boy told her, “I tried to clean blood on her face, but my hands was too small … she had a lot of blood coming out and I couldn’t help my mommy.”
Joana Peca in an undated photo. She was 27.
Williams, 41, has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse and is being held without bond in the Pinellas County Jail. Information on whether he has retained an attorney was not immediately available.
Joana Peca was 27. Her mother, who has custody of her grandchildren, said she lost a piece of herself when her daughter died. She’s said she’s still grieving Joana’s death, along with the loss of all the dreams she had for her.
“Benjamin Williams decided to take the life of my only child in front of those kids,” Peca said this week after his arrest. “Benjamin Williams’ freedom is over.”
He lured his ex to the cemetery under false pretenses, her mother says
The shooting happened after Williams persuaded Peca to meet him at a St. Petersburg cemetery so he could see his infant son, authorities said. Williams’ sister is buried there, so Joana Peca trusted his intentions, her mother said.
As she sat in the front seat of her van holding the baby, he walked up to the car and shot her several times, St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway said.
“Witnesses rushed to the scene to see if they could help Joana. And as they moved her forward, … they realized that she was still holding a four-month-old baby,” he said. “Thankfully, none of the children were hurt,” Holloway added. “But I can’t even imagine the emotional toll that this four-year-old is facing today.”
Williams vanished after the shooting, authorities said. The St. Petersburg police teamed up with US Marshals, Crime Stoppers and other federal authorities to search for him, and a $25,000 reward was issued for information leading to his arrest.
The TV show “In Pursuit with John Walsh” featured the unsolved killing in an episode that aired in November 2022. The episode described a scar on Williams’ nose and said he is missing two top teeth and sometimes wears disguises, including female clothes.
Eleni Peca speaks at a news conference Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Major David Gerardo of St. Petersburg Police said on the show that officers found no gun at the scene and it was not immediately clear who had killed Peca. But clues emerged after investigators went through her cell phone and discovered that she had planned to meet Williams that day, he said.
During Williams’ time on the run he was captured on security video at a store in Georgia wearing a T-shirt with “World’s Best Dad” written on it, authorities said.
A TikTok post from three years ago helped identify him
Months turned into years, with no sign of Williams.
Then on November 27, someone in Mexico saw a TikTok video about the case and tipped the US Embassy and Crime Stoppers that Williams was living in Mexico City, authorities said.
The video was posted about 10 days after the shooting by Jasmeen Alexander, a TikTok influencer whose true-crime account now has more than 2.8 million followers. It shows a Florida news channel’s coverage of the killing and search for the suspect, and has been shared hundreds of times.
It also includes a photo of Williams — in a buzz cut — staring back at the camera.
Williams was often on the move in Mexico City, where he was living under a fake name and close to being homeless, said Yolanda Fernandez, a police spokesperson. She declined to provide additional details, citing an ongoing investigation.
In his recent arrest photo, Williams’ hair is in long dreadlocks and a scar on his nose is clearly visible. He was extradited to Miami, where a St. Petersburg detective and a Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy picked him up over the weekend.
“A dangerous criminal no longer poses a threat to the community, and most importantly to the family — because they were nervous he was going to come back and try to harm the family,” said Holloway, who described Williams as St. Petersburg’s most wanted criminal.
Before his arrest, witnesses in the case were terrified to come forward, but that will change now that Williams is in custody, Holloway said.
At the news conference he also addressed Peca’s family directly.
“Nothing can replace the loss of your daughter, but at least we have a dangerous person off the street,” he said. “At least a loving mother … and the family can know now that we have him in custody. He is behind bars where he belongs.”
Alexander, the TikTok influencer, said in a recent post that Williams’ arrest — more than three years after she posted her video — demonstrates the “crazy” power of social media.
“When it comes to social media, your video can hit at any point of time,” she said.
“My heart goes out to these kids, and my heart goes out to her (Peca’s) mother, because she’s been trying to get justice since 2021,” she added. “I’m hoping this (arrest) can bring some kind of closure to the family.”
Musk, Ramaswamy will meet with House, Senate lawmakers to discuss plans for Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency
What to expect from DOGE and its goal of cutting government waste
Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy has more on how the new Department of Government Efficiency aims to cut up to $2 trillion in government spending on ‘America Reports.’
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are expected to visit Capitol Hill Thursday morning to meet with Republican lawmakers in both chambers of Congress to discuss ways to reduce waste in the federal government just weeks after the creation of the Trump-created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and biotech entrepreneur, are the co-heads of the new agency created by President-elect Trump to root out government waste.
The two will visit Washington, D.C., for meetings with top lawmakers in the House of Representatives and the Senate, signaling they will work alongside Congress to slash abuse of taxpayer money.

Musk and Ramswamy are expected to attend the first Senate DOGE Caucus meeting Thursday morning. The caucus is chaired by Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.
Later, the pair will cross to the other side of the Capitol for a bicameral event hosted by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who invited legislators from both the House and Senate to the event.
Johnson, in his save-the-date announcement, said he plans to discuss “major reform ideas” with Musk and Ramaswamy to “achieve regulatory rescissions, administrative reductions, and cost savings,” while also reviving “the principle of limited government.”
Johnson declared that Trump “has made this possible.”
Musk and Ramaswamy are wasting no time laying out their vision for slashing government bloat through DOGE. The pair penned an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal last month, explaining how the outside-government agency will operate to determine suggestions for cuts.
The entrepreneurs have vowed to scrap entire government agencies through the DOGE initiative, which they intend to wrap up by July 4, 2026.
MUSK AND RAMASWAMY LAY OUT DOGE VISION IN WSJ OP-ED: 5 TAKEAWAYS
In their op-ed, Musk and Ramaswamy largely focused on how DOGE could assist in identifying waste and regulations that could be eliminated through the executive branch.
Republicans will control the White House and both chambers of the legislature when Trump returns to office in January, and many GOP lawmakers have already expressed interest in assisting the agency.
Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Mike Johnson and Vivek Ramaswamy during UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden Nov. 16, 2024, in New York City.
In the House, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said he will establish the Delivering on Government Efficiency Subcommittee, which will be chaired by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., to work with DOGE.
The subcommittee is expected to investigate wasteful spending, examine ways to reorganize federal agencies to improve efficiency and identify solutions to eliminate bureaucratic red tape.
COMER TO CREATE DOGE SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIRED BY MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE TO WORK WITH ELON MUSK, VIVEK RAMASWAMY
Sources told Fox News Digital Comer and Ramaswamy have already met to discuss how best to work together.
Trump said last month he hopes DOGE will become the “Manhattan Project of our time,” a reference to J. Robert Oppenheimer’s secretive atomic bomb endeavor during World War II.
“Republican politicians have dreamed about the objectives of DOGE for a very long time,” Trump said.

Versace won praise for her fresh-faced look when she stepped out in London for the charity gala premiere of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ musical
Donatella Versace impressed fans with her youthful appearance when she stepped out in London Sunday.
The 69-year-old Versace creative director wore a semi-sheer long-sleeved copper-colored dress with sequined fringe over a strapless black bodysuit when she attended a charity gala premiere of “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical” at the Dominion Theatre.
Versace also wore sheer black stockings with tall brown platform boots. The fashion designer accessorized with gold star earrings and wore soft makeup that included shimmery dark gold eyeshadow and a nude lip.
Instead of her signature platinum-blonde straight hairstyle, Versace sported shoulder-length waves in a warmer tone.

After Versace was photographed on the red carpet, fans flocked to social media to compliment her fresh-faced look.
“She looks great. I’m glad she switched up the makeup,” one X user wrote.
“I’m so glad she ditched the black smokey eye,” another commented. “I always wondered why she made it her signature look when it was so harsh on her mature skin and lighter hair.”
“The lighter makeup brightens up her face, and is a vast improvement on its own!” added one commenter.
“Definitely some subtle touches since I think a full blown turn around would turn heads! She’s looking good though!!” one social media user commented.
Another added, “She looks better than she did in 2014.”
Social media users complimented Versace’s fresh-faced look.
“The Devil Wears Prada” musical’s charity gala premiere, which was held on World AIDS Day, benefited the Elton John AIDS Foundation. In addition to Versace, numerous other stars were in attendance, including John and his spouse David Furnish, Elizabeth Hurley, Lily Collins, Vanessa Williams, Luke Evans, fashion designers Zandra Rhodes and Betsey Johnson and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
The musical is an adaptation of the 2006 romantic comedy “The Devil Wears Prada,” which was based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 book of the same name.
Weisberger’s novel was loosely inspired by her time working as an assistant to Wintour. The character of the demanding and powerful fashion magazine editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly is believed to have been based on Wintour.
In the movie, Priestly was played by Meryl Streep, who won the best actress Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the best actress Oscar for her performance. The film also starred Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt.
Fans noted that Versace was not wearing her trademark smokey eye shadow.
The Elton John Aids Foundation funds programs that provide treatment, support and services to people living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and works to end the stigma of the disease, according to its website.
Versace shared red carpet photos from the premiere in two posts on her Instagram page. The businesswoman was seen posing with John, Furnish, Wintour and Williams and joined the cast of the musical in a group shot. She also posted videos from the red carpet and the performance.
“This isn’t just about fashion — it’s about compassion. Tonight, we’re proud to recognise #WorldAIDSDay at the Opening Night Gala of the Devil Wears Prada Musical in support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation,” Versace, a longtime supporter of the foundation, wrote in the caption of one post.

On Dec. 2, Versace paid tribute to her late brother, Versace founder Gianni Versace on his birthday. The famed designer died at the age of 50 in 1997 after being shot by serial killer Andrew Cunanan.
“Happy Birthday, Gianni. Your spirit still fills every corner of my world. I will always miss you,” Versace captioned a black and white photo of herself with her brother.
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson shot dead in Midtown Manhattan, masked gunman at large
The shooting appears to be a “brazen, targeted attack,” police said.
The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were discovered by detectives on the shell casings found at the scene where Brian Thompson, the CEO of major insurance group UnitedHealthcare, was gunned down, police sources told ABC News late Wednesday evening.
Thompson was shot to death at point-blank range in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning before he was set to attend an investor conference, according to police.
The masked gunman, who remains on the loose, carried out a “brazen, targeted attack” that was “premeditated,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. But the motive remains unknown, police said.
NYPD detectives are working to determine whether the words were meant as a message from the shooter and a hint at his motive.
Police released photos of a suspect sought in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The shooter appeared to be lying in wait at the hotel where he shot Thompson around 6:40 a.m., police said.
Video captured the moment the gunman walked up behind the CEO, pointed his gun at him and fired. A witness fled as Thompson stumbled and fell to the ground. The gunman then walked closer to Thompson, firing more times before fleeing.

The shooter was seen on video at 5 a.m. the morning of the shooting outside Frederick Douglass Houses, a public housing project on the Upper West Side, sources told ABC News.
ABC News obtained this photo of the suspect.
When the suspect was spotted on video at Frederick Douglass Houses, he was seen carrying what appeared to be an e-bike battery.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, said in a statement that she’s “shattered” by the “senseless killing.”
“Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives,” she said. “Most importantly, Brian was an incredibly loving father to our two sons and will be greatly missed.”
This undated photo provided by UnitedHealth Group shows UnitedHealthcare chief executive officer Brian Thompson.
Thompson, 50, was in New York City for the UnitedHealthcare investors conference, which was scheduled to start at 8 a.m., and his schedule was widely known, police sources said.
The conference was being held at the Hilton outside of which he was shot, but he was not staying there, police said. The hotel is by the intersection of West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue.

Members of the New York police crime scene unit investigate the scene outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan where Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot, Dec. 4, 2024, in New York.
After Thompson exited his hotel across the street and walked to the Hilton for the conference, the shooter stepped onto the sidewalk from behind a car and shot the CEO in the back, Kenny said.
“The shooter then walks toward the victim and continues to shoot. It appears that the gun malfunctions, as he clears the jam and begins to fire again,” he said.

The suspect fled on foot into an alley, where a phone believed to be linked to the shooter was recovered, police sources told ABC News.
He then fled on a bike and he was last seen riding into Central Park at 6:48 a.m., police said.
Detectives are working to determine whether the suspect had prepositioned the bike somewhere close by, according to sources.
The gunman fled the scene on an e-bike, according to this photo released by the NYPD.
Police believe a water bottle and candy wrapper left near the shooting scene are linked to the shooter and investigators are running tests to determine if there are any usable fingerprints or DNA, law enforcement sources told ABC News.
Detectives believe the gunman is not a professional killer, sources said.
The FBI, which has the most sophisticated technology for retrieving usable data from cellphones, is helping with the investigation, the sources said.

U.S. intelligence has deemed the Russian news site RT to be a propaganda outlet.
Since becoming President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard’s rosy posture toward Moscow has prompted some Democratic critics to suggest that she could be “compromised,” or perhaps even a “Russian asset” — claims the ex-Hawaii representative and Army officer has forcefully denied.
But former advisers to Gabbard suggest that her views on Russia and its polarizing leader, Vladimir Putin, have been shaped not by some covert intelligence recruitment as far as they know — but instead by her unorthodox media consumption habits.
Three former aides said Gabbard, who left the Democratic Party in 2022, regularly read and shared articles from the Russian news site RT — formerly known as Russia Today — which the U.S. intelligence community characterized in 2017 as “the Kremlin’s principal international propaganda outlet.”

While it was not clear to those former staffers whether or when she stopped frequenting the site, one former aide said Gabbard continued to circulate articles from RT “long after” she was advised that the outlet was not a credible source of information.
Doug London, a retired 34-year veteran intelligence officer, said Gabbard’s alleged penchant to rely at least in part on outlets like RT to shape her view of the world reflects poorly on her suitability to fulfill the responsibilities of a director of national intelligence.
“That Gabbard’s views mirror Russia’s narrative and disinformation themes can but suggest naïveté, collusion, or politically opportunistic sycophancy to echo whatever she believes Trump wants to hear,” London said, adding, “none of which bodes well for the president’s principal intelligence adviser responsible for enabling the [U.S. intelligence community] to inform decision-making by telling it like it is.”
Alexa Henning, a spokesperson for the Trump transition team, said in a statement to ABC News that “this is false and nothing but a few former, conveniently anonymous, disgruntled staffers.”
“Lt. Col. Gabbard’s views on foreign policy have been shaped by her military service and multiple deployments to war zones where she’s seen the cost of war and who ultimately pays the price,” Henning said.
‘The Russian playbook’
Former congressional and campaign advisers said it was unclear to what extent Gabbard’s views were shaped by what she read in RT — and they emphasized that she would consume news from a wide range of outlets, including left-wing and right-wing blogs.
But over the past decade, Gabbard’s views on Russian aggression in Europe have evolved in a particularly dramatic fashion.
In 2014, when Russian troops annexed Crimea, Gabbard — then a first-term Democratic U.S. representative from Hawaii — released a statement advocating for “meaningful American military assistance for Ukrainian forces” and for the U.S. to invoke “stiffer, more painful economic sanctions for Russia.”
“The consequences of standing idly by while Russia continues to degrade the territorial integrity of Ukraine are clear,” she wrote at the time. “We have to act in a way that takes seriously the threat of Russian aggression against its peaceful, sovereign neighbor.”

By 2017, however, her tune had changed. In a lengthy memo to campaign staff laying out her views on foreign policy, a copy of which was obtained by ABC News, Gabbard blamed the U.S. and NATO for provoking Russian aggression and bemoaned the United States’ “hostility toward Putin.”
“There certainly isn’t any guarantee to Putin that we won’t try to overthrow Russia’s government,” she wrote in the memo from May 2017, titled “fodder for fundraising emails / social media.”
“In fact, I’m pretty sure there are American politicians who would love to do that,” she wrote.
She also condemned the very sanctions she had previously supported, writing that, “historically, the U.S. has always wanted Russia to be a poor country.”
“It’s a matter of respect,” she wrote. “The Russian people are a proud people and they don’t want the U.S. and our allies trying to control them and their government.”
Gabbard’s sentiment in the 2017 memo is “basically the Russian playbook,” said Ivo Daalder, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO during the Obama administration.

“It’s dangerous,” said Daalder. “That strain of thinking is not unique to Tulsi Gabbard, but it is certainly not where you would think a major figure in any administration would like to be, intellectually.”
By 2022, at the outset of the latest Russia-Ukraine conflict, Gabbard suggested on X that Russia’s invasion was justified by Ukraine’s potential bid to join NATO, “which would mean US/NATO forces right on Russia’s border” — a narrative perpetuated by Russian propaganda channels, including RT, and denounced by the U.S. and NATO as “false.”
Gabbard’s messaging has at times aligned so closely with Kremlin talking points that at least one commentator on Kremlin state media has referred to her as “Russia’s girlfriend.”
A ‘nefarious effort’
The U.S. government first called out RT as a propaganda mouthpiece for the Kremlin in the wake of the 2016 presidential election, three years after Gabbard was elected to Congress.
This past September, the State Department wrote that it had evidence that “RT moved beyond being simply a media outlet and has been an entity with cyber capabilities.” The U.S. also issued fresh sanctions against executives at RT, including its editor-in-chief, who the U.S. accused of engaging in a “nefarious effort to covertly recruit unwitting American influencers in support of their malign influence campaign.”
The Justice Department also indicted two RT employees in September for their alleged role in what the DOJ called a scheme to pay right-wing social media influencers nearly $10 million to “disseminate content deemed favorable to the Russian government.”
In the decade since Gabbard arrived in Washington, experts say she has regularly promoted views consistent with those espoused in RT and other Russian propaganda channels.

In its 2017 assessment, for example, the U.S. intelligence community wrote that RT “has actively collaborated with WikiLeaks” and “routinely gives [WikiLeaks founder Julian] Assange sympathetic coverage and provides him a platform to denounce the United States.”
Gabbard has long been an outspoken supporter of Assange, arguing in a June 2024 appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” that “[Assange’s] prosecution, the charges against him, are one of the biggest attacks on freedom of the press, that we’ve seen, and freedom of speech.”
In Congress, Gabbard also co-sponsored a resolution calling on the federal government to “drop all charges against Edward Snowden,” the former contractor for the National Security Agency who supplied WikiLeaks with secret documents in order to expose what he called “horrifying” U.S. government surveillance capabilities.
RT frequently reports glowingly on Snowden, who has for more than a decade lived under asylum in Russia.
‘Undeniable facts’
But it is Gabbard’s framing of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has most galvanized her critics in the national security sphere.
In March 2022, Gabbard posted a video to Twitter — now X — sharing what she said were “undeniable facts” about U.S.-funded biolabs in the war-torn country, claiming that “even in the best of circumstances” they “could easily be compromised” — a debunked theory regularly promoted by RT and other Kremlin propaganda channels.
Experts say RT and other Russian state-controlled news agencies have frequently capitalized on Gabbard’s public comments to support the biolab conspiracy theory and other disinformation, recirculating clips in which she repeats the Kremlin propaganda as evidence backing the false claims — effectively engineering an echo-chamber to magnify their propaganda machine.

Even so, Brian O’Neill, a former intelligence official who helped prepare the president’s daily brief, expressed confidence that career intelligence officials can support Gabbard with “a constant barrage of new information” that will help shape her understanding of emerging world events.
“New appointees in such roles always bring preconceptions, but like her predecessors, she will be subject to comprehensive briefings grounded in solid evidence provided by individuals of high integrity and expertise,” O’Neill said.
“That said,” O’Neill cautioned, “Trump’s well-documented hostility and skepticism toward the [intelligence community] will shape the environment she steps into. If she adopts a similar posture, there’s a risk she might deprioritize intelligence community input or dismiss inconvenient truths presented to her.”
