I Told My Husband I Was Ill and Might Stop Walking – He Left Me Immediately, Unaware of How Much He Would Regret It Soon

The first thing I noticed was the doctor’s voice on the other end of the line, a steady, clinical tone delivering a piece of news that would change my life forever.

“I need you to come in, Emily,” Dr. Duncan said grimly.

Which led to my visit with him today.

“Emily, can I just be real with you?” Dr. Duncan asked.

“Of course,” I said, although my hands were shaking uncontrollably.

I was nervous beyond anything. After weeks of not feeling good, I knew that something was wrong. And this was the defining moment. Dr. Duncan was going to tell me the results of all the tests we had been doing.

“Give it to me straight, Doc,” I said. “I’d rather know now than keep pretending that everything is fine.”

“Emily, you have Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. It’s a rare neurological disorder that affects motor skills. Over time, you may find that walking will become more challenging, and it’s likely that you’ll need some form of mobility support.”

“What is it?” I asked. “Please, explain more. Help me understand. Please…”

Dr. Duncan smiled sadly.

“Sure, Emily,” he said. “To put it simply, this disease is a group of inherited disorders that cause nerve damage. This damage mostly affects arms and legs, which is why I need you to know that loss of mobility is high.”

I sat there, numb, barely able to grasp the words. I was 29. I thought I had all the time in the world. I wanted kids, but how could I consider that now? When there was a possibility that I would be wheelchair-bound?

I didn’t know how to process it. And then, the reality of having to tell my husband, Tyler, hit me even harder.

How would he react? And what if he couldn’t handle it?

I left the doctor’s room, choosing to walk through the park. I wanted to feel the fresh air on my face. I wanted to walk through the grass and kick the leaves. I wanted to do the simple things that could be taken away from me in the months or years ahead.

That night, I finally worked up the nerve to tell him. I waited until after dinner, having cooked his favorite meal, hoping to catch him in a relaxed mood. But even as I poured my heart out to him, he was half-watching the football game on TV.

“Tyler, could you turn that off for a second?” I whispered, trying to keep my voice steady. “I really need to talk to you about something important, darling.”

He rolled his eyes but picked up the remote with one hand, holding his can of beer in the other.

“Alright, Em, what’s so serious?” he asked.

I took a deep breath.

“I went to the doctor last week, and we’ve been running tests. I just haven’t been feeling good, but I couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong. I went back to Dr. Duncan today, and we found something.”

“What?” he asked. “What did you find? What’s wrong?”

“It’s a neurological condition, and he said that it might make it harder for me to walk in the future,” I swallowed, bracing myself.

“Eventually, I might not be able to walk at all.”

My husband’s face froze, and for a brief moment, I thought I saw worry in his eyes. But then something shifted, a flash of something I’d never seen before.

Disgust.

“Are you kidding me?” he scoffed, putting down his can on the coffee table. “Is this an attention thing, Emily?”

“No,” I said simply.

We were both quiet for a while.

“So… you’re just… you’re going to be some invalid that I have to take care of? Push you around on a wheelchair?”

His words cut through me like a knife. I could barely believe what I was hearing.

“Tyler, I don’t know if it’ll be that bad. We can meet with the doctor together and find out more. We can see how long I have before I should expect symptoms. I’m sure that there are treatments I can try…”

He held up his hand.

“Stop, Emily,” he said. “I didn’t sign up to be anyone’s nurse. I married someone who was fun and vibrant. A woman who would dance at bars and pubs until it was closing time. I didn’t marry someone who’s just going to sit at home all day.”

“You’d leave me because I’m sick?” I asked, barely able to get the words out.

My voice sounded strange to me, hollow and unfamiliar.

“Don’t twist this around on me,” he snapped. “You know what I mean. I have needs too, Emily. I need a real partner. I’m not going to stick around just to take care of you.”

He went upstairs, and I didn’t see him for the rest of the night. Instead, I went to the guest room and cried myself to sleep.

Honestly, was this the man I married? Tyler had never disappointed me before, but this? This was… unforgivable.

The next morning, he packed a bag, leaving a note on the kitchen counter.

Need some time to think.

That was it. No goodbye, no apology. Nothing.

I didn’t hear from him for days. It was like he’d cut me out of his life without a second thought.

I tried to distract myself, to cope, but every little thing in the house reminded me of the life I thought we’d been building together. I started to pack some of Tyler’s things away.

“So, where is he now?” my sister, Audrey, asked when she visited me.

“I have no idea,” I said, opening the box of chocolates she had brought. “I texted his brother to see if he was there, but Kevin said that he hadn’t seen or heard from him.”

“Tell me that you’re not trying to make things work with him, Emily,” Audrey said. “Because I won’t allow it.”

“I’m not,” I said. “It’s just that I want to see him to end this. I want him to know how much he has hurt and disappointed me. I want him to hear it from my lips.”

Audrey nodded.

“Look, whatever happens, I’ve got you. Our family has you,” she said, smiling.

Later that day, while I sat in bed, eating the rest of the chocolates from the box, I scrolled through my phone. Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw.

There, available for the public to see, I saw a post that made my stomach drop. There Tyler was, tagged in a friend’s photo, smiling on the beach with some blonde woman leaning into him, both of them holding cocktails.

He looked happy. Carefree. It was as if I’d already become a distant memory to him.

I lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling.

The anger, the heartbreak, the reality of his disease… it was all just so overwhelming. But then, somewhere deep inside me, something shifted.

I was done crying. I was done feeling bad. I was done feeling like a victim in my own life. I had no idea what was coming next, but whatever it was, I was going to face it on my terms.

Then, the unexpected happened.

A week after Tyler left, my doctor called, sounding flustered and apologetic.

“Emily, I’m so sorry. We’ve made a terrible mistake!” Dr. Duncan said.

“What? What do you mean?” I asked.

“It turns out that your test results were mixed up with another patient’s. You’re healthy. We just need to focus on your calcium levels.”

“What?” I repeated.

“You’re okay. You’re better than okay! And listen, I understand how traumatic the past two weeks have been. So, I’m going to offer you free counseling sessions until you feel okay. I can’t imagine your mental state. If you want it, I’ll do the referral and take care of everything else.”

I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

Relief washed over me, flooding my senses, but it was quickly overtaken by something else.

A shocked woman talking on the phone | Source: Midjourney

A simmering, white-hot anger.

Tyler had left me over nothing. All that pain, all that heartbreak… none of it had been necessary. And what did that say about him?

I hung up, already scheduling an appointment with Dr. Duncan to sort out my calcium issues. I felt a strange mix of freedom and clarity. This wasn’t just about me being healthy.

My husband had shown me who he truly was, and there was no going back. I imagined him sitting on the beach, looking at the water and doing everything but care about me.

About two weeks later, life threw me yet another twist.

My grandmother passed away, leaving Audrey and me with everything she had. Before I knew it, a substantial inheritance was in my bank account.

My gran had always been there for Audrey and me, encouraging us to live our lives how we wanted. Now, with this money, I could finally break free from the life I’d been clinging to. I wasn’t just healthy. I was independent. I had the resources to build a life that was entirely my own.

Without Tyler.

Then, like clockwork, Tyler came crawling back.

One evening, there was a knock on my door. I opened it to find a disheveled Tyler holding a half-wilted bouquet of grocery store flowers. He forced a sheepish smile, one he probably thought would melt my heart.

Instead, I rolled my eyes.

“Em,” he started. “Can we talk?”

“What would you possibly have to say to me?” I asked.

He cleared his throat.

“Look, I panicked. I thought… I thought you’d be sick forever, and I didn’t know how to handle it. But I love you.”

“You mean you love me? Or you love that you heard about my grandmother’s inheritance?”

The color drained from his face.

“I don’t care about money, Emily. I just missed you.”

“Go back to the blonde on the beach,” I said.

I stepped back, letting him stumble over his words as he tried to explain himself. When he finally paused, I rolled my eyes again.

“Do you remember what you said to me that night you left? About needing a vibrant wife? Yeah… nope. That’s not me.”

I opened the door wider, motioning for him to leave.

“I’ll send over the divorce papers. I’ll send them to your office.”

Over the next few months, I poured myself into the projects I’d always dreamed of pursuing. I traveled, started painting, and made new friends. Life was going to be better now, without Tyler and his dead weight.

My Husband Sent Me a Cake to Announce Our Divorce — When He Discovered the Truth, He Came Crawling Back

While Emma is sitting at her desk one afternoon, she gets a surprise delivery. When she opens the box, she finds a cake with an unsettling message and the pregnancy test she forgot to hide. Will she go home and explain the truth to her husband or let him walk away?

I was at my desk, half-typing an email, half-daydreaming about what to make for dinner when the office delivery guy appeared at my office door. He held a bright pink bakery box in his hands, grinning from ear to ear like he was in on some inside joke I didn’t know about.

Bryar was the band’s longest-tenured drummer, performing with them from 2004 until his departure in 2010

Bob Bryar, the former drummer for My Chemical Romance, has died aged 44.

He was found dead in his home in Tennessee on Tuesday (November 26) after last being seen alive on November 4, per TMZ.

The cause of death is not immediately known, but authorities have ruled out foul play, with his possessions, including musical equipment and weapons, untouched.

Bryar was My Chemical Romance’s longest-tenured drummer, performing with the band from 2004 until his departure in 2010.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1979, he began playing drums at a young age in his school’s marching bands. Following his graduation from high school, he studied sound engineering at the University of Florida.

He initially began working as a sound engineer for The Used and Thrice. He struck up a friendship with My Chemical Romance during their tour with the former in 2004, and soon after became their drummer for their tour that year in Japan, replacing previous drummer Matt Pelissier.

Though his involvement with the band came after the release of their second album, ‘Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge’, he appeared in all the music videos and promotional material for it.

His contributions can be heard on My Chemical Romance’s seminal 2006 album ‘The Black Parade’, the band’s most commercially and critically successful record. It debuted at number two in the United States on the Billboard 200, as well as on the UK Albums Chart.

Upon its release, NME liked the album to Green Day‘s ‘American Idiot’, writing that “it’s a piece of work that will challenge every preconception you ever had about the people who made it.” It was also featured as number 10 in NME‘s 50 Best Albums of 2006.

Bryar was involved in the writing process for the band’s follow-up record, 2010’s ‘Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys‘, but left the band shortly before the album’s release.

In a statement at the time, guitarist Frank Iero wrote on the band’s blog: “As of four weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways. This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and expect you all to do the same.”

In the subsequent years, Bryar continued to play drums before announcing his retirement from music in 2014 to become a real estate agent.

He was an active supporter of various dog rescue charities. In 2022, he announced he would be selling his original ‘Black Parade’ uniform and using money from the sale to help “abandoned and sheltered animals in areas of Florida and South Carolina that are affected by Hurricane Ian.”.

Prior to that, he sold a drum kit—used during some of My Chemical Romance’s most formative moments—to raise funds for the Williamson County Animal Control and Adoption Center in Tennessee.

ADOR publicly demands apology from Belift Lab to NewJeans’ Hanni

“We fully trust our artist’s words and deeply regret the harm Hanni has experienced,” said ADOR
newjeans hanni belift apology

ADOR has issued a statement requesting an apology from fellow HYBE sub-label Belift Lab to NewJeans member Hanni.

On November 28, ADOR released a statement on its official stance regarding an alleged incident that took place between NewJeans member Hanni and a manager from Belift Lab.

Hanni claimed earlier this year that a manager had told another K-pop group to “ignore” her when they crossed paths at HYBE amid an ongoing feud between ex-ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin and the parent company. Belift Lab denied the allegations in a statement last month.

“While ADOR has taken a cautious approach to avoid unnecessary disputes that could escalate into controversies for our artist, we now feel compelled to clarify our position as the matter remains unresolved,” said the label per Korea Times.

“Belift Lab’s claims differ completely from Hanni’s account,” it continued, adding that it was “unfair” and “unnecessarily harsh” to expect the singer to recount the incident in detail. “We fully trust our artist’s words and deeply regret the harm Hanni has experienced.”

ADOR added: “We urge Belift Lab to approach this matter with respect and to demonstrate sincerity to ensure this issue does not continue to cause unnecessary controversy.”

This comes amid an escalation of tensions between the members of NewJeans and ADOR two weeks ago, when the group issued a notice demanding the agency resolve several outstanding grievances. NewJeans expressed their intention to terminate their contracts with ADOR if the issues were not resolved.

While they did not make specific contents in the notice public, the girl group and former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin previously called out HYBE’s alleged downplaying of the group’s achievements and undermining their success, as well as its lack of due process investigating Hanni’s claims.

Earlier this week, Min also filed an official criminal complaint against two HYBE PR executives for “breach of duty” regarding their promotion of NewJeans.

ADOR refutes NewJeans statement, claims contract with the group “remains in full effect”

The girl group announced their departure from the label in a press conference yesterday

K-pop label ADOR has refuted a recent statement by girl group NewJeans, claiming that their contract with the K-pop act has not been terminated.

Yesterday (November 28), NewJeans held an emergency press conference announcing their departure from their label, ADOR. The news came two weeks after the group issued a legal notice to the agency, stating that they would terminate their contracts if ADOR did not resolve alleged breaches of their contracts.

ADOR has since sent out a press release stating that their contract with NewJeans is still in effect. “We regret that the press conference regarding the termination of the exclusive contract was planned and conducted without sufficient review, prior to receiving a response to the legal notice,” said the agency.

The label added that it “has not violated the terms of the agreement” and that a “unilateral claim of a breach of trust does not constitute valid grounds for terminating the contract”.

“The exclusive agreement between ADOR and the NewJeans members remains in full effect,” said the agency, which also requested for the group to continue collaborating with it on their upcoming activities.

Around the same time, NewJeans also released a document from ADOR, which had addressed the girl group’s legal notice to the company earlier this month. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the label sent the letter an hour after the group called for an emergency press conference last night.

In the letter, ADOR shared the steps it had taken to address the demands NewJeans outlined in their original legal notice. These include getting an apology from the Belift Lab manager who allegedly told another group to “ignore” member Hanni, resolving a dispute with one of their music video directors and reinstating former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin, among others.

In response, the label wrote that some of the group’s demands were “too abstract or overly broad”, and also went beyond its authority and legal obligations. However, it said that ADOR would “take all possible measures” to address NewJeans’ needs.

“We are willing to share progress updates regularly if necessary, and we hope to maintain communication with the artists,” it said, claiming the group are “refusing to discuss plans for their activities next year”.

ADOR then shared that they have not forced the members to attend meetings “out of respect for them”, but are committed to support the group in their activities.

After starting over as a trio, Eunha, SinB and Umji are now firmly in charge of their own futures. The K-pop idols tell NME about their new mini-album ‘Voyage,’ how challenges can be blessings in disguise and tease the return of GFRIEND

VIVIZ on K-pop idol life: “This job is about music and performances, but at the core, there are people”

After starting over as a trio, Eunha, SinB, and Umji are now firmly in charge of their own futures. The K-pop idols tell NME about their new mini-album ‘Voyage,’ how challenges can be blessings in disguise and tease the return of GFRIEND

Almost a decade ago, in September 2015, then-rookie girl group GFRIEND went viral because of a misfortune. While performing their single ‘Me Gustas Tu’ under a heavy rainstorm, multiple members repeatedly slipped and even fell on the wet stage. But the setback turned out to be a blessing: Girl gained global attention for their resilience, getting back up time and time again, diligently finishing the performance to roaring applause.

The song would go on to become their breakout hit, and from then on, the sextet became a household name in K-pop—that is, until they suddenly left their label in 2021 and stopped releasing music. However, that “end,” as the group’s leader described it at the time, also came with a windfall. The year after, three members of GFRIEND—Eunha, SinB, and Umji—reunited and embarked on a new journey together as power trio VIVIZ.

“You never know, mistakes can also turn into opportunities; it’s all about the journey that you take,” says Umji over a video call with NME. It’s a fitting adage for the trio, who have since taken on a series of new challenges. Among them are a notable third place on season two of South Korean reality TV competition Queendom, holding their first world tour and releasing five mini-albums, including the latest, ‘Voyage’, which came out earlier this month.

“We debuted [as friends] when we were very young, so it felt like we were solely following the company’s concept, and that fit the group at the time,” says SinB, who is seated on Umji’s right side. “But as VIVIZ, it feels like we are doing everything from one to 10.” Upon hearing that statement, Eunha, who is on the opposite side, chimes in. “Make that one to nine; we have to give one for the company,” she jokes, prompting laughs from the whole room.

While VIVIZ have the refreshing energy of newcomers, they are also seasoned veterans with nearly a decade of experience under their belts. Working together for such a long time brings forward a unique connection, even if it doesn’t show at first sight. When looking back on their debut with Girlfriend, they all agree that not only have they matured, but the K-pop industry has also changed substantially.

“This job, like many others, is about human relations. It is about music and performances and singing, but at the core, there are people,” says Umji. “You gain experience on how to problem-solve and how to care for one another. And when some things hurt, how do you deal with that? How do you grow up and move forward during those times?”

To SinB, starting over as VIVIZ has been the biggest challenge so far, one that they are still “in the process of overcoming.” Though she believes that, as more and more people get to know about them, VIVIZ are slowly proving themselves. “VIVIZ is so important and so precious to us. It is our pursuit,” she says defiantly.

At the same time, though, the trio still holds their memories of GFRIEND close—and, as recently announced, they will soon be reuniting with their old bandmates for the group’s tenth anniversary next year. “We just want to show that we’ve been working hard, discussing and planning this,” Eunha hints. Even though there’s not much the trio can “publicly talk about” during their chat with NME, they tell fans to “look forward to it.”.

VIVIZ hold a symbiotic relationship with their label, BPM Entertainment, and are involved in every detail of their projects and records. “Normally, they ask us what kind of styles we want to try,” explains SinB. “Even if we don’t have a specific concept in mind, we have discussions and build it up from there, because they cater [to anything] we have in mind.”

“Even if we have a concept that we want to pursue, it’s important that we first ask the company, ‘Hey, what kind of stuff do you think we should try?’” adds Umji. “While we value our own perspective, we love to have some outside input. We’re open to a lot of stuff, and we want to really broaden our horizons as a group.”

For their latest single, the cheeky ‘Shhh!’, it was their agency that first suggested looking into Latin pop before presenting a variety of potential songs for the trio to run through. “We considered the recording and the performance and how we could appropriately do it to convey Latin pop but make it VIVIZ’s style,” says Umji.

‘Voyage’ stands as the culmination of this teamwork, with Umji saying that the level of perfection and details they had to look into was “quite high.” “That’s the thing about us,” she continues, “Some people are like, ‘As long as my part is good, it’s going to be fine.’ However, we give honest feedback [to each other] and we don’t only look at the final product but at the big picture. This process makes a difference.”

Sitting right in the middle of the table and taking the lead on much of the conversation, Umji is the glue between her bandmates. While SinB is known for her iconic poker face and skilled dance moves, Eunha is an arresting vocalist with an extra-sweet personality. Umji, though, is a mix of both—or what fans would call an “all-rounder”—a talented dancer and a compelling singer, a cutie pie at one moment and a mischievous instigator on another.

Umji was also a late bloomer when it came to creative work—SinB and Eunha had started to co-write songs during their time as members of GFRIEND—but she has since grown into her own and notably was the first to place credits in VIVIZ’s discography. On their latest mini-album, Umji’s the sole lyricist on two of the project’s five songs: ‘Hypnotized’ and ‘Love & Tears’, the latter of which she also co-composed.

“While I was writing [‘Love & Tears’], I was exhausted because I wanted to do really well. So, I realised I needed to refresh myself, and I worked on ‘Hypnotize’ to take my mind off of it,” she reveals. “It felt like a fresh breeze. People say to me, like, ‘It must have been tough to work on both tracks at the same time,’ but it works way better, and it was actually easier.”

Eunha explains that the lyrics for their songs are chosen through a blind test among the members, recalling how Umji was curiously quiet when they unknowingly picked her hard-wrought creations. “[Me and SinB] were like, ‘Why would she be so silent?’ It turns out both the lyrics we liked were written by Umji,” she says. “I just want to emphasize how great she is.”

“I swear, that was one of my best moments for this year, really,” Umji exclaims. “I was quiet, but my heart was like boom,” she says, mimicking fireworks with her hands.

This instance is just one of many that attest to VIVIZ’s unfailing synergy and why they continue to blossom in an industry as fast-paced as K-pop. “Working as a trio has a great charm; it’s like the best of both solo and group,” Umji says. “If you listen to our music, you really feel the chemistry. If you watch our performances, you see the teamwork. But we’re also highlighting the individual characteristics of all of us. I just love it.”

Noel Gallagher says Oasis reunion shows “won’t be as raucous as back in the day”

“There won’t be any fallout; there won’t be any fighting.”

Noel Gallagher has claimed that the 2025 Oasis reunion shows will not be “as raucous as back in the day.”.

The Britpop legends revealed their highly-awaited return to the stage earlier this year, announcing a string of huge stadium gigs in the UK and Ireland to take place next summer. That was then followed by the announcement of dates in North America, South America, Australia, South Korea, and Japan.

Noel was asked about the shows while attending the ‘Zoë Law: Legends’ exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London on Thursday (November 28), specifically whether he believed he and brother Liam would behave as wildly as they did in their ‘90s heyday.

“No, it won’t be as raucous as back in the day, because we’re on the wrong side of 50 now, so we’re too old,” he said (via The Sun).

“We’re too old to give a shit now, so there won’t be any fallouts; there won’t be any fighting. It’s a lap of honour for the band.”

Following the revelation that they’d be returning, Oasis ruled out a headline performance at Glastonbury 2025 and said they won’t be appearing at any other festivals next summer. Liam and Noel have also shot down rumours of a return to Knebworth in 2026 too.

The band have announced that Cage The Elephant will be serving as opening support on their North American leg while former Verve frontman and soloist Richard Ashcroft and Cast will be joining the Mancunian icons on their UK and Ireland dates.

In other news, Liam recently went back on his claims that the band is currently recording a new album, telling fans “it was a laugh.”.

He’d been teasing a potential new LP since September, when one fan asked, “Is it true that Oasis will have a new album???” before Liam replied, “Yep, it’s already finished.” He also responded to a fan asking if a new record was “in the air,” to which he said, “It’s in the bag, mate, fuck the air.”.

Then, earlier this month, he told fans on Twitter/X that he was “blown away” by the material Noel had written for the record. A comment he made back in April also resurfaced after the comeback announcement, in which he suggested Oasis would be recording a new album in November.

However, he’s since dismissed rumours, saying there’s “no Oasis album in the making,” adding, “I was fucking joking, remember them, and the reason being because everyone is a little uptight these days. I’m sorry if I have upset anyone, but fuck me, it was a laugh.”

Liam also responded to recent comments from Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock that Oasis are “boring.” Writing on X, Liam replied, “FUCK HIM SID WAS THE PISTOLS.”

My Fiancé’s Little Daughter Objected at Our Wedding, ‘Daddy, Don’t Marry Her, You Already Have a Wife’

I always dreamed of a wedding day filled with joy, love, and excitement, and as I walked down the aisle, I thought that dream was coming true.

The soft glow of candlelight illuminated the room, mingling with the scent of fresh roses. Jonathan stood at the altar, looking as handsome as the day we met.

It had been three years since we first crossed paths at a friend’s barbecue. I wasn’t looking for love, but Jonathan’s warmth and easygoing nature pulled me in.

What began as casual conversations about work and books soon became long evenings filled with laughter. We clicked instantly, and within months, I couldn’t imagine my life without him.

One evening, not long after we started dating, Jonathan dropped a bombshell over dinner.

“Abigail, there’s something you need to know,” he confessed. “I have a daughter. Her name’s Mia, and she’s four. I need you to think about whether you’re ready for that. Because if this doesn’t work for you, I’d rather know now.”

“A daughter?” I echoed. “You have a daughter?”

The thing is, I hadn’t seen this coming. It was not because I thought Jonathan was hiding anything, but because we’d been so caught up in the whirlwind of getting to know each other that it hadn’t even crossed my mind.

“She’s my world, Abigail,” he said. “I don’t want you or her to be unhappy. If you need time to think this over, that’s okay. I just… I need to be upfront about it.”

I could see the vulnerability in his eyes. I could sense that he was preparing himself for rejection.

“I need to think about this,” I said carefully. “Not because I’m unsure about how I feel about you, but because I want to be sure I can give her, and you, what you deserve.”

“That’s all I can ask. Take your time.”

Over the next few days, I couldn’t stop thinking about Jonathan’s words. I pictured a little girl with Jonathan’s warm eyes and wondered what her life had been like. Would she welcome me, or would she see me as an intruder? Was I ready to take on the role of a stepmom?

When I finally made up my mind, I asked Jonathan to meet me at our favorite coffee shop.

As he sat down, I took a deep breath and said, “Jonathan, I’m in this for the long haul. If Mia is part of the package, then I want to meet her.”

“Thank you, Abigail,” he smiled, feeling absolutely relieved. “That means the world to me.”

“When can I meet her?” I asked.

Jonathan chuckled.

“How about this weekend?” he suggested. “She’s been asking about you ever since I told her I was seeing someone.”

The following Saturday, I found myself standing outside Jonathan’s house, holding a small bag of cookies I’d baked the night before.

My heart was racing as he opened the door with Mia peeking out from behind his leg.

“Abigail, this is Mia,” Jonathan said warmly, stepping aside.

Mia’s bright eyes studied me for a moment before she smiled shyly.

“Hi,” she said, clutching a stuffed bunny to her chest.

“Hi, Mia,” I replied, kneeling to her level. “I made these cookies for you. I hope you like chocolate chip.”

“I love chocolate chip!” she exclaimed, taking the bag from my hands.

From that moment, the ice was broken.

Within minutes, Mia was showing me her favorite toys, dragging me to her playroom, and peppering me with questions. Jonathan watched us from the doorway, and his face told me he was super happy.

“She likes you,” he said later that evening as Mia dozed off on the couch.

“I like her too,” I said, smiling. “She’s incredible, Jonathan.”

So, while becoming a stepmom wasn’t something I had ever imagined for myself, I couldn’t deny that Mia had already claimed a piece of my heart.

When Jonathan proposed a year ago, Mia had squealed with delight.

“You’re gonna be my mommy!” she’d said, hugging my legs tightly.

From that moment, I thought we were on the same page, building a happy little family together.

Fast forward to today, I felt incredibly happy seeing Mia beaming in her flower girl dress.

Everything was going well until the officiant began the ceremony.

“If anyone objects to this union, speak now or forever hold your peace,” he said.

The room fell silent, save for the faint rustle of someone shifting in their chair. I expected the moment to pass uneventfully. Instead, Mia’s small voice rang out, clear as a bell.

“You can’t marry her, Daddy!”

A gasp swept through the room, and my heart plummeted.

I turned to Mia, stunned. “Sweetheart, what did you say?”

Mia stood up from her seat and looked at Jonathan.

“Daddy, don’t marry her,” she said. “You already have a wife.”

I whipped my head toward Jonathan, expecting an immediate denial, but his expression mirrored my confusion.

“Mia,” he said gently, “what are you talking about?”

Mia pointed to the large glazed window at the back of the room. “She’s right there!”

Every head turned toward the window, where a shadowy figure waved at us. I couldn’t understand what was happening. Who was that? Could Mia be telling the truth?

I crouched to Mia’s level, keeping my voice calm despite the whirlwind in my chest. “Sweetheart,” I asked, “who is that? What do you mean, Daddy already has a wife?”

Mia nodded.

“That’s Daddy’s wife,” she said with certainty.

Jonathan stepped closer to the window, squinting into the fading light.

“I… I don’t understand,” he muttered.

“Jonathan,” I said. “what is going on? Who is she?”

“Abigail, I swear I have no idea what Mia’s talking about. Mia,” he said, crouching to her level, “sweetheart, who is that outside?”

Mia tilted her head, her expression serious but calm. “It’s your wife, Daddy. She came to the wedding.”

I heard everyone gasp in harmony.

“Jonathan, is there something you haven’t told me?” I asked.

“Abigail, no. I don’t… just let me see who that is,” he said before walking away from the altar.

My heart pounded against my chest as I stood there.

The murmurs in the room grew louder as he stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

Through the window, I could just barely make out Jonathan speaking to the figure. I watched as his body language shifted from tense to… was that amusement?

I turned to look at Mia, who was now sitting calmly as if she hadn’t just turned the entire ceremony upside down.

Minutes later, the door creaked open, and Jonathan walked back in, smiling. Beside him was a familiar face.

It was Dani, Mia’s former nanny, holding something in her hands.

My confusion deepened. “Dani?” I exclaimed, my voice rising slightly. “What are you doing here?”

Dani stepped forward, her own grin matching Jonathan’s as she held up a pink teddy bear.

“What is that supposed to mean?” I asked, glancing between the two of them.

Jonathan chuckled, shaking his head as though he couldn’t believe the situation himself.

“Abigail,” he said, motioning to the bear, “meet Mrs. Fluff.”

“What?” I asked, feeling even more lost than before.

“Mrs. Fluff,” Jonathan said, glancing at Mia. “When Mia was three, she decided this teddy bear was my wife. It was this little game we used to play where she’d marry me to the bear, and we’d all laugh. I haven’t thought about it in years.”

Mia clapped her hands, delighted.

“She’s your wife, Daddy! You can’t marry Abi if you’re already married to Mrs. Fluff!”

Dani laughed, clearly trying to suppress her amusement. “Mia’s been watching prank videos on YouTube. She wanted to pull a ‘wedding surprise,’ and, well, I couldn’t resist helping her.”

The room erupted into laughter as Dani finished her explanation.

Guests who had been whispering in confusion moments earlier were now wiping tears of mirth from their eyes.

I looked at Mia, who was smiling.

“Mia,” I said, fighting the urge to both laugh and scold, “do you know how scared you made me?”

“It was funny, Abi!”

Jonathan scooped her up, shaking his head in amusement.

“Young lady,” he began. “You’ve got a lot of explaining to do.”

Mia giggled, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Daddy, you’re not mad, are you?”

Jonathan kissed her forehead and sighed. “How can I be? But no more pranks at weddings, okay?”

“Okay,” Mia said sweetly, though the mischievous twinkle in her eyes made me wonder just how long that promise would last.

I turned to Dani, who was leaning casually against the wall, clearly enjoying the chaos she’d helped create. “Dani, you’re lucky this turned out to be funny. I’d almost started crying.”

“I know, I know,” Dani said, holding up her hands in mock surrender. “Mia’s been planning this for weeks. She kept saying, ‘Daddy’s going to be so surprised!’ and I couldn’t resist. Besides, Mrs. Fluff deserved to make a comeback.”

That’s when the officiant cleared his throat.

“Shall we continue, now that the matter of the ‘first wife’ has been resolved?” he asked.

Jonathan placed Mia gently back in her seat and turned to me.

I smiled, squeezing his hand. “Ask me again after the vows.”

The ceremony resumed, and though the day hadn’t gone exactly as planned, it was unforgettable. As we exchanged rings, I glanced at Mia, who gave me a cheeky thumbs-up from her seat.

As Jonathan and I danced later that evening, I leaned in close and whispered, “You know, this might not have been the wedding I imagined, but I think it was even better.”

He grinned, spinning me gently. “What can I say? Life with Mia is always going to be a little unpredictable.”

“And a lot of fun,” I added, as I caught sight of Mia dancing with Dani in the middle of the floor, still clutching Mrs. Fluff.

Brain stimulation effectiveness tied to learning ability, not age

Main finding. Credit: npj Science of Learning (2024). DOI: 10.1038/s41539-024-00278-y

As we age, our cognitive and motor functions deteriorate, which in turn affects our independence and overall quality of life. Research efforts to ameliorate or even completely abolish this have given rise to technologies that show a lot of promise.

Among these is non-invasive brain stimulation: a term encompassing a set of techniques that can affect brain functions externally and noninvasively, without the need for surgery or implants. One such promising technique, in particular, is anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (atDCS), which uses a constant, low electrical current delivered via electrodes on the scalp to modulate neuronal activity.

However, studies exploring atDCS have produced inconsistent results, which has prompted researchers to explore why some people benefit from atDCS while others don’t. The problem seems to lie in our understanding of factors that may influence responsiveness to brain stimulation, leading to responders and non-responders; among these, age has been suggested as one important factor.

Some studies suggest further factors such as baseline behavioral abilities and previous training might be important considerations, but an interplay of these factors with behavior has not been determined in detail, pointing to the need for refined predictive models of the effects of atDCS.

Now, scientists led by Friedhelm Hummel at EPFL have identified an important factor affecting an individual’s responsiveness to atDCS. The team looked at how native learning abilities determine the effect of brain stimulation applied while learning a motor task.

Their work has been published in npj Science of Learning.

Their findings suggest that individuals with less efficient learning mechanisms benefit more from stimulation, while those with optimal learning strategies might experience negative effects.

The researchers recruited 40 participants: 20 middle-aged adults (50-65 years old) and 20 older adults (over 65). Each group was further divided into those receiving active atDCS and those receiving placebo stimulation.

Over ten days, participants practiced a finger-tapping task designed to study motor sequence learning at home while receiving atDCS. The task involved replicating a numerical sequence using a keypad, trying to be as fast and as accurate as possible.

The team then used a machine-learning model trained on a public dataset to classify participants as either “optimal” or “suboptimal” learners, based on their initial performance. This model aimed to predict who would benefit from atDCS, based on their ability to integrate information about the task efficiently early during training

The study found that suboptimal learners, who were seemingly less efficient at internalizing the task at the early stages of learning, experienced an accelerated accuracy improvement while performing the task when receiving atDCS. This effect was not limited to people of a certain age (e.g., older adults), with suboptimal learners being found among younger individuals as well.

In contrast, participants with optimal learning strategies, regardless of age, even showed a negative trend in performance when receiving atDCS. This difference suggests that brain stimulation is more beneficial for individuals who initially struggle with motor tasks. As such, atDCS seems to possess a restorative rather than an enhancing quality, with important implications for rehabilitation.

“By leveraging different methods in machine learning, we were able to untangle the influence of different factors on the individual effects of brain stimulation,” says Pablo Maceira, the study’s first author. “This will pave the way to maximize the effects of brain stimulation in individual subjects and patients.”

The study implies that, in the long run, personalized brain stimulation protocols will be developed to maximize benefits based on an individual’s specific needs, rather than a common trait such as age.

This approach could lead to more effective brain stimulation-based interventions, targeting specific mechanisms supporting learning, especially from the view of neurorehabilitation, for which the main basis is the re-learning of lost skills due to a brain lesion (e.g., after a stroke or a traumatic brain injury).

“In the future, clinicians could apply a more advanced version of our algorithm to determine whether a patient will benefit from a brain stimulation-based therapy, to enhance the effects of neurorehabilitation and personalize treatment,” says Hummel.
