The Åre Murders Is the Latest Must-Watch Thriller

The Åre Murders has had audiences glued to their screens since it premiered last week, smashing records in just four days.

Check out the trailer below:

[PLEASE JW the trailer – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b86Te9d8ZEI]

The five-part Nordic noir series has already racked up a massive 8.8 million views and shot straight to number one in Netflix’s Global Top Ten.

It’s currently sitting in the top spot in 26 different countries, and is currently ranked fifth in the UK and seventh in the US (as of this writing).

Still, social media is flooded with praise for The Åre Murders, with fans calling it an addictive and gripping watch.

What’s It About?

Set in a snowy Swedish town, the show follows detective Hanna Ahlander (Carla Sehn), who finds herself suspended from duty. Hoping for a break, she heads to the picturesque ski resort town of Åre, but her downtime is cut short when a teenage girl suddenly goes missing.

Unable to resist, Hanna jumps back into action and teams up with local detective Daniel Lindskog (Kardo Razzazi). Their investigation soon unearths dark secrets hiding beneath Åre’s peaceful surface.

Netflix’s official synopsis teases: “In a snowy town in Sweden, two detectives team up to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a teenage girl, a network of human traffickers, and devastating family secrets.”

Fans Can’t Get Enough

The show, based on a book series of the same name, has been racking up rave reviews. One X (formerly Twitter) user gushed: “Just finished watching #TheÅreMurders. So good!!! Well done!!! Story, filming, cast are all excellent. Loved this series!!!”

A second added: “The Åre Murders (Åremorden/Swedish) on Netflix was good. I hope there is a second season soon.”

“Love a chilling crime drama? The Åre Murders is your next Netflix binge,” another added.

And a fourth tweeted: “Latest binge watch completed. If you love Scandi noir like me, you’ll love The Åre Murders on Netflix.”

So, if you’re looking for an edge-of-your-seat binge-watch this weekend, The Åre Murders might just be your perfect match.

Kanye West’s online store selling just Swastika T-shirts is finally removed

Kanye West left fans disturbed this week after unveiling his new online store selling just one item – T-shirts with swastikas on them.

Ye, 47, who recently declared that he was a “racist” and a “nazi”, had aired a commercial in some markets during the Super Bowl, pointing fans to his website, Yeezy.com.

The 30-second commercial showed Ye filming a close-up of his face while lying in a dentist’s chair, telling the camera: “I spent, like, all the money for the commercial on these new teeth. So, once again, I had to shoot it on the iPhone.”

According to reports from the New York Times, the rapper then directed people to his online store, which sold just one item – a $20 white T-shirt with a back swastika on the front.

According to Variety, at the time the commercial aired on Sunday night, the store was selling a range of non-branded clothing, but changed it to the controversial T-shirt shortly afterward.

By Tuesday morning, the website appeared to have gone offline, being replaced with a message reading: “This store is unavailable.”

A spokesperson for Shopify, the online platform which processed the website’s orders, told the outlet that Kanye’s online store “did not engage in authentic commerce practices and violated our terms so we removed them from Shopify.”

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein told CNBC that the website’s owners “had an entire day” to prove they were not violating company policies, “which did not happen.”

He said on Tuesday: “The moment we realized this was not actually a real commerce practice, they weren’t actually engaging in authentic commerce, we pulled it down,” labelling the website “disappointing”.

According to reports, the T-shirt was labeled ‘HH-01’, with it being believed to stand for “Heil Hitler”.

Finkelstein told CNBC’s Sara Eisen: “I’m a proud Jewish entrepreneur. I’m a proud Jewish community member. You and I have talked about this in the past, that it’s a big part of my identity. So obviously I’m devastated by that.”

Kanye has expressed antisemitic views on numerous recent occasions, including on social media after his controversial appearance on the red carpet at the Grammys, where his wife, Bianca Censori, appeared wearing a sheer mesh dress underneath which she was completely naked.

The ‘Runaway’ performer took to X on February 7 to share a series of posts including a number of antisemitic tweets about Jewish people, and even about friends of his who are Jewish who he has apparently “never trusted”.

The once-revered rapper then went on to say that he “loves Hitler”, branding himself a Nazi.

Since then, Elon Musk also confirmed that people would no longer be able to see Kanye’s X (formerly Twitter) account.

As a result of his inflammatory posts and offensive slurs, X slapped a “sensitive content warning” on the ‘Gold Digger’ rapper’s account.

According to Sky News, the Campaign Against Antisemitism group condemned West’s posts in a statement, saying: “Once again, Ye has gone on an antisemitic rampage online. It couldn’t be any clearer that he is an unrepentant, proud antisemite.

“At a time of unprecedented antisemitism, there can be no mistaking this incitement for exactly what it is. We call on Elon Musk to remove him from X,” they added.

The 53-year-old X owner finally addressed the controversy after three days, revealing that Kanye’s account had been marked as “NSFW [not safe for work].”

“You should not be seeing that anymore,” the billionaire added.

Kanye had previously been banned from Twitter in 2022 after he posted a photo of a swastika merged with a Star of David.

Naya Rivera’s ex-husband has revealed the heartbreaking reason their son feels guilty he was unable to save his mother from drowning.

The Glee star died at the age of 33 on July 8, 2020, while on a boat in Lake Piru with her on Josey Hollis Dorsey, who was just four years old at the time.

Rivera had been declared missing after the boat was found floating with Josey alone inside, but no sign of his mother.

A search had begun after Rivera had failed to return the boat she’d rented after the allocated time, and a rescue mission was launched when her young son was found alone inside it with his life jacket on.

Her body was found on July 13, with the sheriff suggesting that Rivera and Josey – who’d been swimming at the time – may have found themselves caught in a rip current and struggled to get back to the boat, saying that she likely “mustered enough energy to save her son, but not enough to save herself.”

Four and a half years have passed since her tragic death, but Rivera’s son – now nine – still holds guilt that he couldn’t do more to save her life, according to his dad, Ryan Dorsey.

The 41-year-old explained in a new interview with People: “He said that the last thing she said was his name, and then she went under, and he didn’t see her anymore. It just rocks my world that he had to witness her last moments.”

Revealing how Josey tried to help his mom, Dorsey added: “Something he’s said over and over is that he was trying to find a life raft, and there was a rope, but there was a big spider on the rope, and he was too scared to throw it.

“I keep reassuring him, ‘Buddy, that rope wasn’t going to be long enough.’

“That obviously still sticks out in his head because he feels like he could have saved her. I think she just got caught up in a brush — that or a weird undercurrent from the dam. It was just a freak occurrence.”

Dorsey admitted that he also wonders if things could have been different if he had also been there that day, but admits it would not necessarily have meant a less tragic outcome.

“I probably would have jumped in, and I like to think I would’ve saved the day. But on the other hand, I think maybe something bad could have happened to both of us. I don’t know,” he told the outlet.

The 41-year-old acknowledged how difficult it has been to grieve for Rivera, admitting that he still can’t look at pictures of her.

After he heard the news she was missing, he recalls collapsing at Ralph’s grocery store in Big Bear, before driving 100MPH on the 145-mile journey to Lake Piru to help with the search.

Dorsey called it the “worst five days of my life” as he feared they may never find her body.

Lake Piru, a 130ft-deep man-made reservoir, is known for its unpredictable currents and whirlpools, and 26 other people have reportedly drowned in its waters.

Ventura County reached a confidential settlement with Dorsey in 2022 after he filed a wrongful death lawsuit due to the rented boat “not complying with safety standards.”

Attorney Amjad M. Khan wrote in a statement to The Blast at the time: “Through this settlement, Josey will receive just compensation for having to endure the drowning of his beloved mother at Lake Piru.

“Though the tragic loss of Josey’s mother can never truly be overcome, we are very pleased that the monetary settlement will significantly assist Josey with his life beyond this tragedy.”

Dorsey also revealed how he helps Josey grieve for his mother, explaining: “You can only give him a hug and tell him, ‘I know, life is not fair. Bad things happen and there’s no reason for it, and you just have to do your best to be a good person.’

“It’s hard trying to explain things that you can’t really make sense of no matter what age you are.

“I’m not a big believer in everything happens for a reason because I can’t ever think of a reason why he doesn’t have his mom.”

The 40-year-old actress, best known for portraying Ren Stevens on Even Stevens and voicing the titular character in Kim Possible, revealed the horrific details of her accident in an Instagram post.

“So I got shot in the eye. It was not fun. I am safe,” Romano said, pointing to a deep bruise underneath her right eye.

She pulled down her eyelid to expose severe redness and damage, and said: “This is really bad tonight,” before taking a moment to remind fans to “be grateful for every day”.

Despite the bruise, Romano kept her sense of humor, joking: “I get to say I got shot in the face, and lived to tell the tale.”

In the caption of the post, the Disney star explained that an unsafe gunshot from another party at the event is what led to her injury.

“Yesterday was my husband’s birthday and I took him to shoot clay pigeons as a present. There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face,” she penned.

Her husband, Brendan Rooney, immediately jumped into action and rushed her to the hospital as Romano was hit in five places, including one shot that was less than an inch from hitting her right eye directly.

Reflecting on the terrifying moment, she shared an emotional message of gratitude: “With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive. I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much.”

“I saw my life flash before my eyes and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant,” she added.

On Tuesday, February 11, Even Stevens star Christy Carlson Romano took to social media to share an update on her recovery after visiting an oculoplastic surgeon.

“It is a miracle,” she wrote. “The shot was less than 1mm from permanently blinding me. @drseanpaul also explained that the shot missed all the vital parts of my eye by moving around them like a marble hugging the curve of a bowl (it’s an anomaly).”

Doctors have determined that a pellet fragment below her eye cannot be removed, as attempting surgery could result in permanent blindness.

Another fragment lodged in her forehead has fused into her skull, and medics have decided to leave it in place since it could actually help the healing process.

Despite the close call, Romano assured her 751K followers that she “should fully recover with no issues at all.” However, she revealed an unexpected long-term consequence: “I may never be able to get an MRI again.”

Support poured in from fans, many expressing their relief at Romano’s recovery. “Wow that’s incredibly lucky holy moly. Sending you healing love!!!” one wrote. “Definitely a miracle! Im so happy you are okay,” another said.

“So happy for you. This moment will forever change the way you think about everything. Thanks for sharing…be well,” a third added.

Fans work out the ‘hidden meanings’ behind Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance

Kendrick Lamar took to the stage to give us an eventful Super Bowl halftime show, and people think they’ve deciphered what it was about.

The Compton-born rapper electrified the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans with a powerful set, and there was lots to unpack.

One of the biggest shocks of the night came when tennis legend Serena Williams joined Lamar’s show. Fans quickly speculated about the significance of her presence.

A Twitter user pointed to a moment from Williams’ past, writing: “For those of y’all who weren’t outside, the media tore Serena to shreds for crip walking at Wimbledon.

“Her coming back to do a dance that references a culture she’s actually a part of, during a live performance criticizing someone for being a culture vulture is chef’s kiss.”

It also fuelled the beef between Kendrick and Drake due to Serena being an ex-girlfriend of the latter.

Drake recently filed a defamation lawsuit against his own record label, Universal Music Group, over the release of Not Like Us – a song widely seen as a diss track.

Though Kendrick was not directly named in the lawsuit, Universal responded, stating: “Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist – let alone Drake – is illogical.”

Some fans believe Kendrick alluded to the ongoing feud during his Super Bowl set.

“Kendrick with the a minor necklace is next level trolling and shithousery. I’m here for it,” one user posted.

Adding to the layers of symbolism, actor Samuel L. Jackson opened the halftime show dressed as Uncle Sam, declaring: “Salutations, it’s your uncle… Sam. And this is the great American game.”

One social media user broke down the potential meaning behind the choice, stating: “Uncle Sam dates back to the War of 1812, when slavery was still rampant & continued being a symbol of ‘Patriotism’ (Trump calls Americans ‘patriots’ which many feel is code) that people felt perpetuated the marginalization of Black People. Tonight, Uncle Sam was Black.

“America as it was portrayed on that stage was Black, during a time where diversity is actively being legally stripped away in many forms in this country. Kendrick Lamar sent a strong message right in front of the President that we built this country, no matter what you & yours may think. That is why this performance was powerful.”

Despite delivering a historic halftime show, Lamar won’t receive direct payment from the NFL. Like past Super Bowl headliners, he performed for free, with the league covering production costs. Instead, the real value comes from the global exposure, which typically translates into skyrocketing music sales and streaming numbers.

Past Super Bowl performers have seen massive benefits from their appearances:

  • Rihanna’s Spotify streams surged by 640% after her 2023 halftime show, earning an estimated $88.3 million in media impact value within 12 hours.
  • Lady Gaga’s 2017 performance boosted her album and song sales by 1,000%.
  • Jennifer Lopez gained 2.3 million new Instagram followers after her 2020 Super Bowl appearance.

Some artists have even invested their own money to elevate their performances – The Weeknd reportedly spent $7 million on his 2021 show, while Dr. Dre did the same in 2022.

A Canned Tuna Recall Is Hitting Costco, Trader Joe’s, And Others

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a notice about a voluntary recall of canned tuna fish sold at several grocers. The recalled tuna is sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names and is made by Tri-Union Seafoods. The manufacturer discovered defective pull-tab lids, which led to the recall.

These defective cans have the potential to leak or allow bacteria to contaminate the product. The bacteria they are concerned about is clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal toxin. This toxin leads to a type of food poisoning known as botulism, which attacks the body’s nervous and respiratory systems, causing paralysis or — even worse — death. At this time, no cases of illness have been reported.

This recall affects tuna sold in 27 states at various grocery stores. Costco — which had a recall on almost 80,000 pounds of butter last fall — Trader Joe’s, Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, and Walmart are all retailers who have been ordered to pull the offending tuna off of their shelves. The stores and states that are affected, product names, codes, and use-by dates are all listed on the FDA’s recall notice.

What To Do If You Have The Recalled Tuna

If you purchased the affected tuna, return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund, or discard it. Do not eat it under any circumstances. Additionally, Tri-Union Seafoods can be contacted directly for a retrieval kit via the information provided on the FDA website.

Sometimes, events that lead to botulism can occur long after the food has left the manufacturing plant: for instance, cans that have been dented in transit or in the store itself. Dented cans should always be discarded or brought to the attention of the store manager to avoid the risk of food poisoning.

Botulism is the same toxin that affected Snapchill canned coffee in 2024, which also led to a voluntary nationwide recall. Voluntary recalls are a way for manufacturers to be proactive when a food item has a chance of being contaminated, avoiding serious illness for consumers and lawsuits for the company.

The 37-year-old rapper took the stage at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, headlining one of the most-watched musical events of the year, with special guest and longtime collaborator SZA, as well as guest appearances from Samuel L. Jackson and Serena Williams.

The night saw the Philadelphia Eagles triumph over the Kansas City Chiefs with a host of stars in attendance, including Taylor Swift who was brutally booed by the audience.

One attendee who got quite a different reaction was President Donald Trump, who emerged to cheers from the crowd.

The sentiment didn’t seem to be echoed by Kendrick, however, as fans pointed out one particular lyric he changed – which appeared to be a dig at Trump.

They tweeted: “Kendrick Lamar seems to have changed his lyrics to take a shot at Trump, who is also in attendance at the superbowl tonight… What did he mean by ‘The revolution is about to be televised, you picked the right time but the wrong guy’?”

Others added: “‘The revolution is about to be televised, you picked the right time but the wrong guy.’ -Kendrick Lamar. Yeah, he didn’t vote for Trump, no wonder MAGA is furious..”

Another commented: “Kendrick knew Trump was in attendance and he still did that. Epic.”

One viewer referred back to Trump’s inflammatory comments about DEI (diversity equity, and inclusion) hires following the Washington D.C. American Airlines crash as Samuel L. Jackson took to the stage dressed as Uncle Sam, writing: “Samuel L. Jackson as Uncle Sam at Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime site. Can’t wait for Trump to say it’s ‘DEI’.”

In one sketch featuring the veteran actor, he was seen telling Kendrick he’s “too ghetto: before adding: “Yes! America wants slow chill music.”

It comes after President Trump ordered all US government staff working on DEI schemes to be put on immediate paid administrative leave, having revoked Executive Order 11246 (1965).

The law was designed to protect workers from discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, with advocates believing it helps to level the playing field for underrepresented groups.

Travis Kelce’s ‘reaction to Taylor Swift being booed at Super Bowl 2025’ revealed

Travis Kelce had an emotional reaction to his girlfriend Taylor Swift getting booed at the Super Bowl.

Swift received an unexpectedly chilly reception during Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, where she was in attendance to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Despite being one of the world’s most recognizable celebrities, Swift was met with loud boos from the crowd when she appeared on the stadium’s jumbotron.

In widely circulated videos, the singer appeared to acknowledge the negative response, offering a humorous side-eye. She was also seen turning to rapper Ice Spice and seemingly asking: “What is going on?”

Tennis legend Serena Williams quickly showed her support, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “I love you @taylorswift13 don’t listen to those booo!!”

Some speculate that Eagles fans may still hold resentment over Swift’s past comments about the team.

During her 2023 Eras Tour stop in Philadelphia, Swift addressed speculation about whether lyrics from her song Gold Rush referred to the Eagles football team or the rock band. She clarified: “There was sort of a, I don’t know how large the debate was, but I did see the debate about how a lyric that says ‘with my Eagles T-shirt hanging from the door’ … I saw some people wondering if it was the band Eagles or the team the Eagles.”

“And I love the band the Eagles,” she continued, before adding: “But guys, like come on. I’m from Philly. Of course it’s the team,” per Billboard.

Since dating Kelce, however, Swift has become a vocal supporter of the Chiefs, a shift that has not gone unnoticed by Philadelphia fans.

Kelce, who had just endured a tough night after the Chiefs’ loss, struggled with the crowd’s treatment of Swift, according to a source cited by the Daily Mail.

“Travis was aware of Taylor getting booed and he felt helpless. Seeing the look on her face got to him,” the source revealed.

“He always protects her and it broke his heart. He was already having a tough night and the fact that the stadium was predominantly Eagles fans didn’t help. Travis knows that this hurt her and anyone can see this.”

The insider suggested that Swift’s reception may have been fueled by lingering resentment from Eagles fans, who view her as “a traitor of sorts” due to her Pennsylvania roots and former support for the team. Since dating Kelce, Swift has been a prominent Chiefs supporter, a shift that has not gone unnoticed by die-hard Eagles fans.

Adding to the controversy, former President Donald Trump took to social media to mock Swift, amplifying the stadium’s reaction.

Trump, who made a brief appearance at the game, later trolled Swift on Truth Social, writing: “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”

The remark was particularly stinging given that Kelce had previously expressed his appreciation for Trump’s attendance, calling it a “great honor.”

While Trump was spotted in the stands early in the game, he did not stay for long, leaving the stadium by halftime after the Chiefs struggled in the first half.

#44: How to wear a Canadian Tuxedo without looking like Britney and Justin

Double the pleasure, double the fun. Double the denim!

Today’s topic is a fun one. We’re doubling down on double denim aka the Canadian Tuxedo (more on that below) aka denim-on-denim (what we call it in the biz).

Full credit goes to my work wife and long-time friend, who suggested this idea after Kendrick Lamar and I both rocked double denim this week. (His look looked especially good with multiple Grammy awards!)

I fell asleep and missed the Grammys, so this was an unintentional twinning! (Kenrick by Kevin Winter//Getty Images; Me by Me//My iPhone)

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of denim. I’ve written about it here and here and here (it could easily be the workhorse of my wardrobe).

But as an elder millennial who brain was burned by this image…

Britney and Justin at the 2001 VMAs (P.S. We’re obviously Team Britney here.)

It’s taken me a little while to figure out how to wear denim with denim that doesn’t get me in double trouble.

(Which, ironically, was why the Canadian Tuxedo was invented in the first place. Because Bing Crosby got in dress code trouble for wearing Levi’s jeans at a fancy Vancouver hotel. When Levi’s heard about this, they created a formal tuxedo jacket made from their denim just for him.1)

Bing Crosby in his natural element & rocking his denim tuxedo c/o Levi’s

But thanks to some excellent inspiration that I’ve gathered and studied over the years, I think I’ve cracked the code on how to wear it.

My Denim-on-Denim Hall of Fame

My Do’s and Don’ts for Denim-on-Denim:

  1. DO wear similar shades (washes) on top and bottom
  2. DON’T lean too hard into the Western vibes
  3. DO layer, t-shirts under, blazers over, etc.
  4. DON’T wear a cowboy hat 😉
  5. DO accent with rich reds, burgundys and neutrals like camel, tobacco, and chocolate browns
  6. DON’T mix with brights or neons (right now at least, too Jenna Lyons J.Crew for the moment, but I could see it coming back and I’d be first in line!)
  7. DO pair with prints, like cheetah, zebra, even snakeskin in small doses (like my boots above)
  8. DON’T pair with polka dots, or other overly bold, graphic prints. Small scale is better.
  9. DO accessorize with polished jewelry, pointy-toed shoes, and preppy elements like loafers
  10. DON’T go overly dressy, avoid stilettos and Britney-style Swarovski!!
Rich red accents

The beauty of double denim is how it casually makes a statement. It’s classic Americana without feeling classic. Cowboy swagger without having to learn how to ride a horse. Laid-back but a step ahead of jeans and a tee shirt. Minimal with a maximalist impact. Midimalist, if you will.

Love a denim shirt open over a tee (and under a beautiful coat or blazer). Nick Parker elevated.

Is this a Yay or Nay for you? Tell me in the comments!

LOS Angeles The Grammy Awards have long been criticized over a lack of diversity, with a history of artists of color, women, and rap and R&B musicians being snubbed for top prizes. Sunday’s edition suggests something may have shifted.

Beyoncé, the most awarded and nominated artist in Grammys history, finally won album of the year for her country-and-then-some album, “Cowboy Carter,” furthering her dedication to recentering Black art in popular culture. Kendrick Lamar took home two of the top four prizes of the night, celebrating hip-hop on a show that has historically neglected the genre. The Grammys placed young pop performers in the spotlight at the moment of their ascent, meeting the contemporary music moment.

The Recording Academy has made concerted efforts to diversify in recent years. Could it be those strides have already paid off in a course correction? Or were the 2025 Grammys simply a one-off?

A feud squashed

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. appeared onstage to address “some real criticism” facing the organisation behind the Grammys.

“Artists were pretty vocal with their complaints,” he said, reaching back to 2020: “The Weeknd called out the academy for lack of transparency in our awards. He went so far as to announce he was boycotting the Grammys.”

Five years can make a world of difference. At the end of his speech, Mason introduced The Weeknd as a surprise performer, making his first appearance at the Grammys since 2017.

His return suggested approval of a new voting class—several presenters took care to note that the awards were decided by more than 13,000 voting members.

Peter A. Berry, a music journalist with work in XXL and Complex, believes that reading might be too pat, though. “He performed to promote his new album,” he said, referencing The Weeknd’s “Hurry Up Tomorrow.” That timing aligned with the Grammys’ need to highlight its reform.

“I can’t remove my cynical music industry lens,” he says. “Time heals all wounds when you need it.”

A more diverse voting body

Of the Recording Academy’s current voting membership, 66% are men, 49% are white, and 66% are over the age of 40. But the academy announced last year that 3,000 female voting members had been added since 2019. Two-thirds of the total voting body joined in the last five years. In that same time, the academy has increased the number of members who identify as people of colour by 63%, with 100% growth in Asian American and Pacific Islander voters, 90% growth in Black voters, and 43% growth in Latino voters.

At the 2024 Grammys, women dominated the major categories, and as a result, every televised competitive Grammy went to at least one woman. It appeared to reflect contemporary interest in female pop performers—Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Victoria Monét, and Karol G, among them. In 2025, that trend continued. Women received every single televised award on Sunday night with the exception of Lamar’s and one shared between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.

“They got it right this year,” Berry says. “Maybe it is that the voting committee changed.”

Nominees and winners reflect contemporary interest

The nominations announced in November acknowledged the artists who led the conversation in 2024. Beyoncé was celebrated with 11 nominations, which Kinitra D. Brooks—an academic and author of “The Lemonade Reader”—says was the result of voters finally recognising “this is clearly someone who deserves the respect of her peers.”

Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, experiencing breakout years, received six nods each. The ubiquitous, discourse-dominating “Not Like Us” from Lamar and Charli Xcx’s “BRAT” also received recognition.

And that translated to awards. There were a number of first-time award winners, many women and people of colour like Doechii, Carin León, and Sierra Ferrell. In the relatively new songwriter of the year, non-classical category, Amy Allen became the first woman to take home the trophy.

A move in the right direction for hip-hop

“Not Like Us” was an early winner at the Grammys’ premiere ceremony, receiving trophies for music video, rap song, and rap performance. It marked his seventh time winning in that last category. But it was his presence during the main broadcast that really made a splash. One of the biggest global hits of 2024, his Drake Diss track won song and record of the year—only the second hip-hop single to ever win record of the year. By the end of the night, “Not Like Us” had won all five awards for which it was nominated.

Lamar’s recognitions arrived the year after Jay-Z criticised the Grammys for ignoring the rap legends before him—those who brought hip-hop to the preeminent music award show, only to have rap categories not make the official broadcast.

“We want you all to get it right,” Jay-Z said last year. “At least get it close to right.”

Berry describes Lamar’s wins as “a layup,” a celebration of one of the great rap records of recent history.

And though Lamar’s wins meant more hip-hop on the broadcast, Berry says the Grammys’ hip-hop picks tend to be predictable. He says there’s a “cookie cutter” formula for the kind of rappers the Recording Academy recognises.

“The more esoteric and abstract rap,” as well as “the mid-level street rap,” goes largely ignored, he says.

Course-correcting the biggest blind spot

Beyoncé’s album of the year victory was widely thought to be long overdue. The superstar had four of her albums nominated in the category before winning on her fifth.

She seemingly alluded to it in her acceptance speech: “It’s been many, many years,” she said.

“I Am… Sasha Fierce” lost to Taylor Swift for “Fearless” in 2010. In 2015, her self-titled album “Beyoncé” lost to Beck’s “Morning Phase” and Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House” beat “Renaissance” in 2023. Perhaps most infamously, though, was the loss of “Lemonade” to Adele’s “25.”

“I can’t possibly accept this award. And I’m very humbled, and I’m very grateful and gracious, but my artist of my life is Beyoncé,” Adele said in her 2017 acceptance speech, holding back tears.

In winning album of the year Sunday, Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win the top prize in the 21st century. The last was Lauryn Hill with “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” 26 years ago. Before her were Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston, and the list ends there.
Brooks believes “Beyoncé reflects that Black women can be excellent and still ignored in very particular ways—because this is a top honour in her field.”

Emily Lordi, a Vanderbilt University professor whose focus is African American literature and Black popular music, describes “Cowboy Carter” as “an album with a capital A—one that explicitly aims to restore the Black roots and routes of country, a genre long coded as white. It is the kind of historic intervention the academy could not fail to recognise—it was undeniable.”

Berry points to the fact that the record’s country influence may have aligned with the academy’s traditionalist voters—but also appealed to those inspired by its break with convention.

“It is some cosmic justice being done,” says Berry. “It might not be the best Bey album, but it was the best of the category.”

Even Grammys’ host Trevor Noah couldn’t help but acknowledge the milestone: “We finally saw it happen, everyone,” he said. That, we did.
