John Cena didn’t tell fiancée about Amy Schumer sex scene where she said he was ‘inside her’
The 16-time WWE champion, now enjoying a Hollywood career and recently embracing his first villain role in over 20 years, was still early in his acting journey when he landed the part of Steven, the overly muscular, gym-obsessed boyfriend of Schumer’s character, Amy Townsend.
The film opens with an intimate bedroom scene between the two characters that pushed the boundaries of comedy and believability. Schumer even joked in interviews that Cena “was actually inside me” during filming, a tongue-in-cheek claim that had fans talking.
At the time, Cena was in a relationship with fellow WWE star Nikki Bella. Speaking on Conan, he admitted that instead of preparing her for the scene, he dodged the subject until it was too late.
“Honestly, I didn’t think I’d get the part,” Cena said. “I kept putting off telling Nicole and having the discussion of, ‘Hey, there may be some graphic scenes.’ So when I did get it, I couldn’t say no. I kind of just walked in one day and said, ‘Hey, I’m doing this.’ That was the wrong approach.”
Bella’s reaction was… intense. “She has such beautiful brown eyes, but they glowed with red hellfire,” Cena joked. “She has such a great smile, but in that moment she turned into the alien and the predator at once.”
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Cena clarified that he wore a “modesty sock” for the scene, meaning Schumer’s claim wasn’t literal. On Club Shay Shay, he called Schumer “an angel” who made the shoot “so comfortable” despite the awkward nature of the work.
“Imagine seeing your man do a sex scene and having the whole world see his big butt,” she later said. “You get visuals. I swear, I couldn’t masturbate forever because I just thought of the sex scene.”
Despite the cringe factor, the couple stayed together for several more years. Bella even signed a 75-page document outlining aspects of their relationship, a testament to Cena’s famously meticulous nature. In 2017, he proposed to her in the ring at WrestleMania 33 after they defeated The Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag team match, per PEOPLE.
However, the engagement ended in 2018. Cena later met Shay Shariatzadeh while filming Playing with Fire. The two began dating and tied the knot in a private ceremony on October 12, 2020.
It’s safe to say Cena now knows the importance of a heads-up before bringing home a Hollywood surprise.
