‘Squid Game’ series 2 has officially landed on Netflix

Squid Game is back!

If you cast your mind back to September 17, 2021, you’ll probably recall the South Korean Netflix show taking over the world.

It was hard to find anyone who hadn’t watched the show that saw a group of debt-riddled characters recruited to play high-stakes schoolyard games for life-changing sums of money.

Obviously, we are all aware that these games usually ended in people dying in a pretty horrific manner — all for the enjoyment of the rich and elite.

I won’t spoil season one for anybody who is yet to watch it, but it seemed to end in a pretty definitive way.

Regardless of this, we are heading back to South Korea for another round of games!

The show dropped on Netflix today (December 26) and will presumably be the perfect thing to watch while eating those Christmas leftovers.

If you’re concerned about season two spoilers in this article then fear not because you won’t find any!

Season two picks up three years after the first season’s dramatic finale, with Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), the lone survivor of the brutal games, stepping back into the arena.

This time, however, his motivation is far more personal. He’s determined to take down the sinister mastermind known as the Front Man and put an end to the lethal spectacle.

“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind,” reads the official synopsis.

“Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”

Alongside Lee Jung-jae, returning cast members include Lee Byung-hun (the enigmatic Front Man), Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo.

Season two also introduces an impressive roster of new characters, played by Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, and others.

This season will feature only seven episodes, compared to the first season’s nine.

However, fans can rest assured that this is part of a carefully crafted narrative strategy. The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, confirmed that Squid Game has already been renewed for a third and final season, slated for release in 2025.

“I wrote Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time, and we were in production for both simultaneously,” Hwang told Deadline.

“When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of Episode 7, so I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that.”
