Sam Ballard suffered life-changing consequences in the blink of an eye

It was a dare that changed the trajectory of an teenager’s life forever, which his now-adult friends are still reeling from.

In 2010, Sam Ballard’s life changed in the blink of an eye as he suffered immediate and tragic repercussions for eating a slug.

Like many 19-year-olds looking to impress their buddies or gain a couple of laughs, the Australian teen felt like he couldn’t refuse the disgusting dare when a gastropod crossed his path at a booze-filled party.

Yet shortly after eating the slimy creature, the keen rugby player’s central nervous system began to shut down.

As the invertebrate was infected with a parasite known as rat lungworm, Sam contracted a strand of meningitis, known as eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, which is severe but treatable.

Sam suffered an infection in his brain and fell into a coma in hospital for 420 days.

When he woke up, he was left paralyzed from the neck down, including all his limbs.

All he could do was control his breathing and eyelids, and his mom, Katie Ballard, became his full-time carer.

Sam tragically died in 2018 at the age of 28 due to medical complications from the incident.

His pal, Jimmy Galvin, recalled that fatal moment to The Project: “We were sitting over here having a bit of a red wine appreciation night, trying to act as grown ups and a slug came crawling across here.

“The conversation came up, ‘should I eat it?’ [and] off Sam went. Bang. That’s how it happened.”

Jimmy said he apologized to his friend for not stopping him from eating it.

When he did, he said Sam ‘started bawling his eyes out’.

Jimmy also shared a heartfelt message to others in hopes today’s teens won’t follow in his friend’s footsteps.

He said: “Just take care of your mates. Before you jump off a roof into pool or dare your mate to eat something stupid.

“It can have the worst consequences – not only on your mate and the rest of your friends, the rest of your life, just take care of each other.”

Sam’s family, however, have stressed they don’t blame Sam’s friends for what happened to him, telling the NZ Herald that the boys were ‘just being mates’.

“[Online trolls would say] the boys should be the ones paying for Sam to be looked after.

“How stupid that a kid does something like that and expects everybody to pay for it.

“It’s tough to fathom that there are people that can’t understand there is a very sick kid who has lost everything health-wise. His family have lost him, you know. And all the great times they should have had with him.”

Speaking at his funeral, Sam’s brother Joshua also said to his mourning friends: “We don’t want you to feel any guilt about what happened that night.

“Your friendship to Sam was extraordinary.”

While renovating her late parents’ home, Janet discovers a decades-old Christmas gift hidden in the kitchen wall with her name on it! Inside, a VHS tape bears the chilling note: “This will change your life.” Watching the tape reveals a family secret that turns her world upside down.

I stood in what used to be my parents’ kitchen, a dust mask hanging around my neck, when the sledgehammer hit something that didn’t sound right.

The hollow thunk made me pause. Mom and Dad had lived in this house for 40 years before passing within months of each other, and now here I was, trying to turn their dated kitchen into something I could love.

The renovation project had started as a way to finally move past my grief. Two years had passed since my parents’ deaths, but every swing of the hammer felt like I was dismantling memories along with the old cabinets.

“That’s weird,” I muttered, lowering the sledgehammer.

The drywall crumbled away to reveal something that definitely wasn’t a stud or pipe.

Fragments of yellowed plaster scattered across my work boots as I reached in and pulled out a package wrapped in faded Christmas paper, covered in dancing snowmen that had long since lost their cheerful gleam. The paper was brittle, threatening to disintegrate under my touch.

My heart skipped when I saw my name, “Janet,” written in Mom’s flowing script.

The paper crackled under my fingers as I turned it over, trying to guess how long it had been hidden there.

The edges were soft with age, corners rounded from years pressed against unforgiving drywall. I scratched at one taped corner of the wrapping and the packaging tore apart, practically unwrapping itself.

The first thing I saw was a note that made my hands shake: This will change your life.

It was Mom’s handwriting again. Beneath the note was a VHS tape. I lifted it, turning it over in my hands.

“This was meant for me…” I muttered. “I have to know what’s on it.”

I rushed down to the basement. As I worked through the renovations, I’d stored anything useful down there so it would be out of my way, including my old TV with the built-in VCR player. I quickly found it in the corner and carried it upstairs to the living room.

The tape clicked into place, and the screen flickered to life. A small boy with bright eyes appeared, maybe seven or eight years old, reciting a poem I didn’t recognize. His smile was infectious, his whole face lighting up as he performed.

Then the image changed and I gasped. Mom and Dad, looking so much younger, sitting on our old floral couch. Mom’s hair was still completely brown, Dad still had his mustache. I’d forgotten how handsome he’d been.

“My darling Janet,” Mom began, her voice cracking. “There’s something we need to tell you.”

“Something we should have told you long ago.” She twisted her wedding ring nervously. “We just didn’t know how…”

Dad reached for her hand before speaking to the camera. “You were born with a heart defect, sweetie. A serious one. The doctors…” He swallowed hard. “They didn’t think you’d make it. Those first years were… we almost lost you so many times.”

“But then a miracle happened,” Mom continued, tears glistening in her eyes.

“The boy you watched at the beginning of this video… his name is Adam. He passed away unexpectedly and his family donated his organs. Janet, his heart beats in your chest. In their darkest moment, Adam’s family gave us the greatest gift imaginable: a future with you.”

I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling the long scar my parents told me was caused by a bad playground accident when I was a toddler, and the steady thump beneath my ribs.

Adam’s heart. Adam’s heart. All these years, I’d carried this piece of someone else’s story without knowing it. The scar had been there all this time, but I’d simply accepted my parents’ explanation.

“You were too young to remember the surgery,” Dad explained. “We wanted to tell you so many times but it never felt like the right time, so we decided to give you this tape to explain everything.”

“We hope you’ll remember Adam and honor his memory. You became our Christmas miracle because of him.”

The video ended, and I was left sitting there, staring at the screen in disbelief. My body felt like it was floating, disconnected from everything around me.

Eventually, I snapped out of shock, pulled out my phone, and called Lisa. My older sister had always been my first call in moments of crisis, real or imagined.

“Hey sis, I… I just found something hidden in the wall in Mom and Dad’s house,” I said.

“Please tell me it’s not black mold,” Lisa replied. “Or mice. Remember that nest we found in the attic when we were kids?”

“It’s nothing like that. It’s… a Christmas present. A VHS tape. Lisa, I don’t understand what I’ve just seen. Did I get a heart transplant when I was a kid?”

“Oh my God,” Lisa breathed over the phone. “You found it… stay right there, I’m coming over right now.”

Lisa hung up before I could ask anything more. I watched the video again and around 15 minutes later, the front door burst open and Lisa rushed in. The first thing she did was pull me into a tight hug.

“I’m so sorry, Janet. I should’ve told you, but… after everything that happened…”

“So, you knew about this? All this time?” I whispered.

Lisa sank onto the couch beside me, her shoulders slumping. “I was twelve when it happened. I remember sitting in the hospital waiting room with Grandma, praying harder than I’d ever prayed before. That’s the real reason why you need those pills you take, they prevent your body from rejecting the donor heart.”

My jaw dropped. Mom and Dad told me those pills were for an entirely different health issue.

Yet another clue that had been in front of me all this time, another lie I’d never questioned.

She took a shaky breath as she looked at Mom and Dad, frozen on the TV screen. “Mom and Dad wrapped this tape years ago, planning to give it to you on your eighteenth birthday. But Grandma stopped them.”

“What? But why?”

Lisa shook her head. “She said you weren’t ready, that it would traumatize you. She took the gift from them and hid it somewhere — I guess now we know where.”

“In a wall? She put it in a wall?

“You know how she was. She probably put it there thinking fate would lead you to it once you were ready.” Lisa squeezed my hand. “She loved you so much. Maybe too much. After nearly losing you as a baby, she couldn’t bear the thought of causing you any pain, even if it meant hiding the truth.”

I thought about Grandma, and how she’d hover when I played sports, making me take breaks I didn’t need. All those moments took on new meaning, weighted with understanding I’d never had before.

“I have someone else’s heart,” I said slowly, testing the weight of the words. “Every birthday I’ve celebrated, every milestone, every heartbreak and triumph… it was all because of him.”

“You have Adam’s heart,” Lisa corrected gently. “And it’s the strongest heart I know. It’s carried you through everything and helped you become this amazing person. That’s what organ donation is about: life continuing, love extending beyond loss.”

I rewound the tape, watching the little boy again. He couldn’t have known, reciting his poem, that he was creating this message for a stranger who would carry his heart.

“I need to find his family. To thank them. To…” I trailed off, uncertain. “What if they don’t want to hear from me? What if it’s too painful? They lost their child — maybe they don’t want a reminder.”

Lisa considered this, her nurse’s compassion showing through. “But what if they’ve spent years wondering about the little girl who received their son’s heart? What if knowing you, seeing how you’ve lived, helps them feel their choice meant something?”

With the help of my parents’ old records and Lisa’s internet sleuthing, we found Adam’s parents still living just two hours away.

It took weeks to gather the courage to contact them. I put together a Christmas basket — a nod to the hidden gift that revealed the truth.

Standing on their porch, my heart — Adam’s heart — pounding, I almost turned back. The basket felt inadequate, my words insufficient for the magnitude of what I needed to express. Then the door opened.

I found myself looking into eyes I recognized from the video. Adam had had his mom’s eyes.

“Hello,” I managed, my voice barely a whisper. “My name is Janet, and I…”

But Adam’s mother was already reaching for me, tears streaming down her face. “I know exactly who you are, Janet. We hoped this day would come when one of you would reach out to us. We’ve been waiting for so long.”

As she pulled me into a hug, I felt the steady beat in my chest strengthen, as if recognizing its first home.

On a December afternoon, much like the one when they lost their son, we began to heal wounds we didn’t even know we had.

Some gifts, I learned, are worth waiting for — even if they’re hidden in walls, wrapped in faded paper, holding truths that change everything.

And sometimes the greatest gift isn’t in the revelation itself, but in the way it connects us to the stories we never knew we were part of, the lives that touched ours in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

Yoni Barrios is accused of fatally stabbing two people and injuring six others on the Las Vegas Strip

Warning: This article contains descriptions of knife crime and violence which some readers may find distressing.

A man accused of the 2022 Las Vegas knife attack which left two dead is now set to stand trial.

On October 6 2022, showgirl Maris Digiovanni and Brent Hallet were fatally stabbed and six others were also injured near the Wynn hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

The attack – which took place in broad daylight – was captured on CCTV footage and a 32-year-old man named Yoni Barrios was later arrested and charged with two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon and six counts of attempted murder.

In December 2022, a judge found him unfit to stand trial, however, after two years in a psychiatric hospital, Barrios is now facing trial and if convicted, could face the death penalty.

The attack

A police report obtained by The Post alleged that Barrios approached Digiovanni and her friends and ‘became angry’ because he ‘thought the women were laughing at him and making fun of his clothing’.

He then began ‘stabbing’ Digiovanni ‘in the chest’ and ‘after which he began stabbing the other women in the group as they ran away,’ the report continues.

Barrios reportedly told officers he then started looking for other people ‘to let his anger out,’ and was accused of going on to fatally stab Brent Hallet.

The report states: “Barrios stated he was hoping officers would shoot him.”

Surveillance footage from Wynn Casino was later obtained by police revealing the horrific extent of the attack.

The recording shows a man leaving Wynn Casino at around 11:39am, approaching the showgirls and stabbing Digiovanni at around 11:41am, 3News reports.

Another of the showgirls posing for photographs on the Las Vegas Strip who was stabbed, Anna Westby, told ABC13 KTNV: “He went into his bag, pulled out a cloth, and then unfolded that cloth… and it was a knife.

“He grabbed the knife […] and stabbed Maris in the heart. Then Victoria ran and he chased [her] and stabbed her in the back.”

When Westby tried to run away, she was similarly attacked.

After being shown of an image of a knife recovered from the scene, Barrios reportedly confirmed to police it was the one he used in the attack.

Latest update

Barrios is since reported as having been charged with 15 felony counts including an act of terrorism, 3News reports.

Yesterday (January 8), Clark County District Attorney’s Office filed a notice of intent to seek capital punishment against Barrios if he’s convicted.

Barrios’ arraignment hearing is reportedly set to take place today (January 9).

The terrifying ordeal reportedly went on for six months before it finally came to a head

Warning: This article contains discussion of rape which some readers may find distressing

‘I’m in your closet. Come find me,’ read a ketchup-written note on the wall of a family’s home.

For months, nine-year-old Tina and her 15-year-old sister Karen Bowen had noticed things going missing in their home and the TV turning on on its own, so naturally they assumed their home in Townsend, Massachusetts, was haunted – that or their mom, who had died from cancer, was trying to get in touch with them.

When they highlighted the issue to their dad Frank, he laughed it off but would often be out of the house with work. So, Tina and Karen took it upon themselves to find out and so whipped their Ouija board out.

That’s when the bizarre ‘tapping’ noise began coming from the walls in their home, and when Frank returned one day he overheard his daughters discuss their supernatural encounters – but he put it down to grief.

“Over the next few days, the tapping sounds in the house would continue, and they were no longer just coming from the basement,” explained podcaster Mr Ballen, who shared the case with his listeners.

“They were also coming from the kitchen. They were coming sometimes from the second floor. They were coming from all over the house. But the girls were the only ones who could hear the sounds.”

However, their initial excitement turned to terror and so they decided to muster up the courage to go into the basement armed with a kitchen knife but retreated in fear.

While returning upstairs they discovered someone had written on their walls in ketchup, writing: “I’m in your closet. Come find me.”

When Frank returned home, he assumed it was a cry for help by his daughters and so sent them to a counsellor.

It all came to a head in December 1986, when he took his daughters and one of their friends out for dinner. Upon their return they noticed all the lights in the house were switched on and the TV too, while the furniture was rearranged.

As Frank went room-to-room, with his daughters and their friend close behind, they spotted a message: “marry me?” written in shaving cream on the wall.

Mr Ballen went on: “He hears movement in the closet, in the room that he’s in. Frank turns and he looks at this closet. The doors are open to this closet, but it’s a dark closet. And out of the closet, walks a man who is wearing a dress, Frank’s dead wife’s dress. This person had clown makeup on their face, and they were wielding a hatchet.”

The three girls bolted upstairs and Tina exited out of a bedroom window and darted to her neighbors home for them to call 911.

By the time cops arrived, the boy had vanished, leaving behind only his hatchet.

They were sent away from the home, until several days later Frank returned to collect clean clothes but noticed that there was activity going on in the first floor so he called the police to check if they were still investigating the home – they weren’t.

When an officer arrived, they opened the door to find pennies glue to the ceiling. Among several other chilling things there was also more messages on the walls and above pictures of Tina and Karen there was the writing: “I’m going to kill you, Tina” and: “I’m going to kill you, Karen” with knives stabbed into pictures of them.

As a sweep of the property was carried out, a cop made a bone-chilling discovery.

“Looking back at this officer is Danny LaPlante. He’s crouched down, he’s got a hatchet over his shoulder, he’s wearing a dress, and he’s staring back at this officer,” Mr Ballen explained.

Daniel LaPlante, who was 16 at the time, had been living within the walls of their home for six months, and had reportedly asked Tina out at school but she rejected him.

He was arrested but having served just 10 months in a juvenile detention center he was released and went on to rape and murder 33-year-old Priscilla Gustafson, who was pregnant at the time, and drowned her two kids – five-year-old William and seven-year-old Abigail.

In 1988, Daniel LaPlante was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences for their murders.

For 30 Years, My Father Made Me Believe I Was Adopted – I Was Shocked to Find Out Why

For thirty years, I believed I was adopted, abandoned by parents who couldn’t keep me. But a trip to the orphanage shattered everything I thought I knew.

I was three years old the first time my dad told me I was adopted. We were sitting on the couch, and I had just finished building a tower out of brightly colored blocks. I imagine he smiled at me, but it was the kind of smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“Sweetheart,” he said, resting his hand on my shoulder. “There’s something you should know.”

I looked up, clutching my favorite stuffed rabbit. “What is it, Daddy?”

“Your real parents couldn’t take care of you,” he said, his voice soft but firm. “So your mom and I stepped in. We adopted you to give you a better life.”

“Real parents?” I asked, tilting my head.

He nodded. “Yes. But they loved you very much, even if they couldn’t keep you.”

I didn’t understand much, but the word “love” made me feel safe. “So you’re my daddy now?”

“That’s right,” he said. Then he hugged me, and I nestled into his chest, feeling like I belonged.

Six months later, my mom died in a car accident. I don’t remember much about her—just a blurry image of her smile, soft and warm, like sunshine on a chilly day. After that, it was just me and my dad.

At first, things weren’t so bad. Dad took care of me. He made peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and let me watch cartoons on Saturday mornings. But as I grew older, things started to change.

When I was six, I couldn’t figure out how to tie my shoes. I cried, frustrated, as I tugged at the laces.

Dad sighed loudly. “Maybe you got that stubbornness from your real parents,” he muttered under his breath.

“Stubborn?” I asked, blinking up at him.

“Just… figure it out,” he said, walking away.

He said things like that a lot. Anytime I struggled with school or made a mistake, he’d blame it on my “real parents.”

When I turned six, Dad hosted a barbecue in our backyard. I was excited because all the neighborhood kids were coming. I wanted to show them my new bike.

As the adults stood around talking and laughing, Dad raised his glass and said, “You know, we adopted her. Her real parents couldn’t handle the responsibility.”

The laughter faded. I froze, holding my plate of chips.

One of the moms asked, “Oh, really? How sad.”

Dad nodded, taking a sip of his drink. “Yeah, but she’s lucky we took her in.”

The words sank like stones in my chest. The next day at school, the other kids whispered about me.

“Why didn’t your real parents want you?” one boy sneered.

“Are you gonna get sent back?” a girl giggled.

I ran home crying, hoping Dad would comfort me. But when I told him, he shrugged. “Kids will be kids,” he said. “You’ll get over it.”

On my birthdays, Dad started taking me to visit a local orphanage. He’d park outside the building, point to the kids playing in the yard, and say, “See how lucky you are? They don’t have anyone.”

By the time I was a teenager, I dreaded my birthday.

The idea that I wasn’t wanted followed me everywhere. In high school, I kept my head down and worked hard, hoping to prove I was worth keeping. But no matter what I did, I always felt like I wasn’t enough.

When I was 16, I finally asked Dad about my adoption.

“Can I see the papers?” I asked one night as we ate dinner.

He frowned, then left the table. A few minutes later, he came back with a folder. Inside, there was a single page—a certificate with my name, a date, and a seal.

“See? Proof,” he said, tapping the paper.

I stared at it, unsure of what to feel. It looked real enough, but something about it felt… incomplete.

Still, I didn’t ask any more questions.

Years later, when I met Matt, he saw through my walls right away.

“You don’t talk about your family much,” he said one night as we sat on the couch.

I shrugged. “There’s not much to say.”

But he didn’t let it go. Over time, I told him everything—the adoption, the teasing, the orphanage visits, and how I always felt like I didn’t belong.

“Have you ever thought about looking into your past?” he asked gently.

“No,” I said quickly. “Why would I? My dad already told me everything.”

“Are you sure?” he asked, his voice kind but steady. “What if there’s more to the story? Wouldn’t you want to know?”

I hesitated, my heart pounding. “I don’t know,” I whispered.

“Then let’s find out together,” he said, squeezing my hand.

For the first time, I considered it. What if there was more?

The orphanage was smaller than I had imagined. Its brick walls were faded, and the playground equipment out front looked worn but still cared for. My palms were clammy as Matt parked the car.

“You ready?” he asked, turning to me with his steady, reassuring gaze.

“Not really,” I admitted, clutching my bag like a lifeline. “But I guess I have to be.”

We stepped inside, and the air smelled faintly of cleaning supplies and something sweet, like cookies. A woman with short gray hair and kind eyes greeted us from behind a wooden desk.

“Hi, how can I help you?” she asked, her smile warm.

I swallowed hard. “I… I was adopted from here when I was three years old. I’m trying to find more information about my biological parents.”

“Of course,” she said, her brow furrowing slightly. “What’s your name and the date of your adoption?”

I gave her the details my dad had told me. She nodded and began typing into an old computer. The clacking of the keys seemed to echo in the quiet room.

Minutes passed. Her frown deepened. She tried again, flipping through a thick binder.

Finally, she looked up, her expression apologetic. “I’m sorry, but we don’t have any records of you here. Are you sure this is the right orphanage?”

My stomach dropped. “What? But… this is where my dad said I was adopted from. I’ve been told that my whole life.”

Matt leaned forward and peeked into the papers. “Could there be a mistake? Maybe another orphanage in the area?”

She shook her head. “We keep very detailed records. If you were here, we would know. I’m so sorry.”

The room spun as her words sank in. My whole life suddenly felt like a lie.

The car ride home was heavy with silence. I stared out the window, my thoughts racing.

“Are you okay?” Matt asked softly, glancing at me.

“No,” I said, my voice trembling. “I need answers.”

“We’ll get them,” he said firmly. “Let’s talk to your dad. He owes you the truth.”

When we pulled up to my dad’s house, my heart pounded so loudly I could barely hear anything else. The porch light flickered as I knocked.

It took a moment, but the door opened. My dad stood there in his old plaid shirt, his face creased with surprise.

“Hey,” he said, his voice cautious. “What are you doing here?”

I didn’t bother with pleasantries. “We went to the orphanage,” I blurted out. “They don’t have any record of me. Why would they say that?”

His expression froze. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then he sighed heavily and stepped back. “Come in.”

Matt and I followed him into the living room. He sank into his recliner, running a hand through his thinning hair.

“I knew this day would come,” he said quietly.

“What are you talking about?” I demanded, my voice breaking. “Why did you lie to me?”

He looked at the floor, his face shadowed with regret. “You weren’t adopted,” he said, his voice barely audible. “You’re your mother’s child… but not mine. She had an affair.”

The words hit me like a punch. “What?”

“She cheated on me,” he said, his voice bitter. “When she got pregnant, she begged me to stay. I agreed, but I couldn’t look at you without seeing what she did to me. So I made up the adoption story.”

My hands trembled. “You lied to me for my entire life? Why would you do that?”

“I don’t know,” he said, his shoulders slumping. “I was angry. Hurt. I thought… maybe if you believed you weren’t mine, it would be easier for me to handle. Maybe I wouldn’t hate her so much. It was stupid. I’m sorry.”

I blinked back tears, my voice shaking with disbelief. “You faked the papers?”

He nodded slowly. “I had a friend who worked in records. He owed me a favor. It wasn’t hard to make it look real.”

I couldn’t breathe. The teasing, the orphanage visits, the comments about my “real parents” wasn’t about me at all. It was his way of dealing with his pain.

“I was just a kid,” I whispered. “I didn’t deserve this.”

“I know,” he said, his voice breaking. “I know I failed you.”

Matt nodded, his jaw tight as he glared at my father. “You’re coming with me,” he said softly.

As we walked out the door, my dad called after me. “I’m sorry! I really am!”

But I didn’t turn around.

Ruby Franke was sentenced to jail on four counts of child abuse

Former YouTuber Ruby Franke and her business partner Jodi Hildebrandt are currently behind bars after pleading guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse.

They were arrested in August 2023 at Hildebrandt’s house in Utah, after Franke’s 12-year-old son escaped through a window and asked a neighbour to call the police.

The boy was covered in wounds and had duct tape around his ankles and wrists, telling the St George Police Department that Hildebrandt had put ropes on his limbs and used cayenne pepper and honey to dress his cuts.

Who is Ruby Franke?

The mother-of-six from Utah was once a YouTube sensation, providing parental advice to millions on her once-popular channel.

Racking up over two million subscribers, the page was called 8 Passengers and featured her husband Kevin Franke and their children Shari, Chad, Abby, Julie, Russell, and Eve.

Franke joins ConneXions with Jodi Hildebrandt

Two years after the success of her channel, she joined Mormon therapist Hildebrandt’s ConneXions podcast in 2022.

They immediately attracted the wrong kind of attention after issuing controversial opinions about rape victims, immigrants, and people with eating disorders.

Franke and Hildebrandt’s arrest

The pair were arrested two years ago after Franke’s ’emaciated’ 12-year-old son managed to escape the home to alert neighbours to what had been going on.

He had visible marks around his face and was asking for food and drink.

After the duo were taken in, police found the boy’s 12-year-old sister in a ‘similar physical condition of malnourishment’.

One of the children also said they were forced to sleep on a bean bag instead of a bed for seven months, following accusations of withholding food, and cancelling Christmas.

Franke’s oldest daughter, Shari, wrote on Instagram at the time: “Today has been a big day.

“Me and my family are so glad justice is being served.

“We’ve been trying to tell the police and CPS for years about this, and so glad they finally decided to step up.”

Once her husband became aware of the allegations, which he called ‘horrific and inhumane’, he divorced from Franke.

Franke and Hildebrandt charged with six counts of child abuse

YouTube banned 8 Passengers and ConneXions from their site after the pair were charged with six counts of felony child abuse.

Franke pleads guilty

After pleading guilty to four counts, Franke’s lawyer said: “Initially, Ms. Franke believed that Jodi Hildebrandt had the insight to offer a path to continual improvement. Ms. Hildebrandt took advantage of this quest and twisted it into something heinous.”

Franke and Hildebrandt are sentenced to prison for child abuse

Franke and Hildebrandt were convicted on 20 February 2024, and were given four separate prison sentences.

The pair will serve up to 30 years in a Federal Penitentiary.

The medical professional revealed how the non-alcoholic alternative works on our brains and if it’s potentially harmful

A medical expert has explained how the popular new drink works on your brain to make you feel some effects of alcohol.

Dry January has arrived, and we’ve just passed the one week mark- if you’re taking part, hopefully you’re still going strong, or have managed to get back on track.

However, those participating will be pleased to know that there is now an alternative to alcohol, and no, I’m not talking about H2O (as glorious as it is).

The non-alcoholic alternative is an option for those doing Dry January (Sentia Spirits)

The non-alcoholic alternative is an option for those doing Dry January (Sentia Spirits)

What are Sentia Spirits?

Sentia Spirits are responsible for the creation of a line of non-alcoholic drinks that can give you that ‘gentle buzz’ without a hangover, and it’s all legal to buy.

Thought up by Professor David Nutt and his team, they describe the drink as an ‘effective alternative to drinking low levels of alcohol’, resulting in you feeling tipsy.

Nutt said to The Independent that the drink is ‘based on the science of alcohol’, with low doses in particular as they help you relax more, and be more sociable.

Now, a health expert has weighed in on how the drink works exactly, and how you can feel the effects of alcohol with no repercussions.

Dr Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor, explained: “Drinks like Sentia, marketed as alcohol alternatives and mood enhancers, work by targeting the brain’s natural biochemistry, particularly the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) system.”

How do Sentia Spirits work?

Nutt explained that this specific neurotransmitter is activated in a similar way, as Dr Wylie adds: “GABA is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in regulating anxiety, relaxation, and social bonding.

“These drinks often include a blend of botanicals and compounds that can either directly stimulate GABA receptors or promote the production of GABA, leading to a calming effect without the intoxicating side effects of alcohol.”

They work similarly to CBD drinks, as they ‘target the brain’s natural biochemistry’, like plant and herb extracts such as passion fruit or lemon balm in terms of calming someone.

She went on to suggest: “They may work by enhancing GABA’s ability to bind to its receptors in the brain or by reducing the breakdown of GABA, increasing its availability.”

Ultimately, it can cause relaxation, reduced stress, and an improved mood – all without cognitive impairment.

The expert also revealed that they could include ‘adaptogens and nootropics’, which play their part in stress reduction, improving the ‘overall social and sensory experience’.

Positives of drinking Sentia

Dr Wylie believes that the drink could prove to be a great ‘low-calorie, non-alcoholic alternative’ for those looking to avoid alcohol by choice, or for a healthier lifestyle.

She noted: “Individual responses can vary based on personal biochemistry and the specific formulation of the drink.”

Negatives of drinking Sentia

The expert noted that the ‘active ingredients’ in Sentia that may feature plant-based compounds that affect the GABA system, could ‘have unknown or under-researched long-term effects on the body, particularly with regular use’.

She revealed: “Additionally, some individuals may experience side effects, such as drowsiness, interactions with medications, or allergic reactions to specific herbal components.”

Stephen Hawking shared one final warning for humanity before his death

And it’s felt even realer recently

Before he died, Stephen Hawking shared one final warning for humanity.

The professor, who would have turned 83 today (8 January), died back in March 2018 but seemed to have an eerie insight into how things would go after him.

For some people, artificial intelligence (AI) is the best thing since sliced bread, cracking on with tasks they can’t be ar*ed to do themselves or making life a little easier.

But plenty of others worry its rise will turn out like a scene from the film I, Robot and just how would that look for many careers?

Well, Hawking was way ahead and gave the prediction back in 2012 that ‘the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race’.

Yeah, dark as f**k but maybe the physics whizz has a point. At the time of that chat with the BBC, AI as we know it was relatively in its infancy but Hawking could already see the power it might be able to have, especially its ability to surpass human intelligence.

He continued: “It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate.

“Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.”

Then, in 2015, the Brit was one of 100 experts to sign an open letter to the United Nations warning of the dangers of unchecked AI development, joined by Elon Musk in a bid to create stringent rules for AI.

Just one year before his death, Hawking then warned mankind about the dangers of allowing AI to grow further during an interview with Wired magazine.

He said: “I fear AI may replace humans altogether.”

No thanks. (20th Century Studios)

No thanks. (20th Century Studios)

I mean, if someone like him is telling us AI is going to bring the end of times, we should probably listen.

At one point, Hawking even suggested we could become as dumb as rocks compared to machines if we don’t stay sharp.

Published a few months after he died, he’d wrote in his book Brief Answers to the Big Questions: “We may face an intelligence explosion that ultimately results in machines whose intelligence exceeds ours by more than ours exceeds that of snails.

“It’s tempting to dismiss the notion of highly intelligent machines as mere science fiction, but this would be a mistake – and potentially our worst mistake ever.”

And if we look at the digital era we’re currently living in, AI has exploded at a rapid pace.

Not only can we now harness the use of OpenAI to create full-length educational articles, news pieces and scripts for films, it’s continuously learning by the information we feed it.

What will it be like in 20 years after being fed even more knowledge and data?

The YouTuber visited La Rinconada, a ‘mostly illegal’ gold mine located in the ‘highest city in the world’

A content creator went and checked out the closest inhabited place to the sky on Earth and all we can say is we’re glad it wasn’t us.

La Rinconada, in Peru, is believed to be the highest city in the world, home to a host of illegal activities.

And with an altitude of 5,100 meters, the locals are living with only 50 percent of the usual oxygen levels.

It’s thought that their bodies have evolved to produce two times more blood cells than ours.

Well, if that hasn’t sold it to you, then here’s Zazza the Italian who has explored one of the most ‘dangerous neighbours in the world’.

Zazza described the gold mining town as the 'most inhumane place' in the world (YouTube/Zazza The Italian)

What is La Rinconada like?

Following a three-hour journey from the city of Juliaca, he told viewers that the destination was ‘dangerous’ and ‘off-limits’ to tourists.

“It’s practically an entire, immense slum,” he said.

“I’m feeling dizzy. We’re over 5,000 meters, and they say that [above] 5,000 meters is no longer suitable for human life.

“But over 50,000 people live here. It’s incredible.”

A community of criminals

The run-down gold mining town is full of criminals who are ‘dressed as miners’.

“They rob pedestrians, steal belongings that workers earn in the mines, then leave and hide,” a policeman in the video explained.

“They can commit any criminal act, and it’s not easy to identify them.”

The mining life

“People who stay on the margins of the mines, searching, scavenging through rocks for small, small gold sediments,” Zazza added.

“It’s truly grueling work, especially in these weather conditions. They call it no man’s land.

“So of course, these narrow streets, along with the clothing, make the work of the officers very difficult.

“And I’ve seen many people who… abuse alcohol, I think because there isn’t much entertainment, and life is very hard… these are the only moments to forget a bit about how tough it is to work here, I guess, right?”

The policeman explained that the people of La Rinconada who rob from the miners will do so to spend their money on alcohol and drugs.

It bizarrely ties in with the local tradition of finding gold easier ‘when you’re drunk’.

“Yes, apart from that, it’s a custom here. If they drink, they drink a lot. The more they drink, the more mines they find,” he added.

“A bit strange, but that’s how it is. At the entrance of… the mines, there’s what they call the uncle, the grandfather… where there’s a little god.

“Exactly, there are small statues at the entrance of the mine, and miners every day offer them things, whether it’s cigarettes, a bottle of alcohol… so that it guides them, right? In the search for gold.

“The legend says that if they find gold, they have to spend that money on vice.”

Not for me, thanks.
