Archibald Montgomery Low shared his vision for the future in his 1925 book The Future

Ever wondered what the world would look like a century from now? If so, you’re not the only one.

Just like most of us probably imagine the year 2125 to be filled with intergalactic space travel, AI overlords or a nuclear apocalypse (if you’re feeling pretty pessimistic) the people of 1925 wondered a lot about what life for us would look like.

And it turns out that some of their predictions weren’t that far off.

One of the people to speculate about the distant future was English inventor and physicist Archibald Montgomery Low, who outlined his vision of what he believed life would look like 100 years on from his timeunearthed by genealogy website Findmypast.

Here are the ones which we may recognise in our day-to-day lives.

Television

Televisions existed in a very basic and experimental form during the 1920s, with John Logie Baird frequently sharing updates and demonstrations of his inventions. Low had also worked in the invention and development of the early television set, which he called the ‘TeleVista’ in 1914.

He also shared his predictions for how the medium would develop over the years, writing that ‘a television machine’ would overtake newspapers as our primary source of news and entertainment.

Automatic telephones

While Low couldn’t have foreseen that we’d all be carrying a mini television around in our pockets, he was more than aware that the clunky rotary phones of the 1920s would eventually be upgraded by ‘automatic telephones’ capable of getting the number right every time.

At home ‘loud speaker’

Another upgrade to our homes was Low’s prediction of an at home ‘loud speaker’ which would keep us up to date with the news. This can be seen in notifications beeping through on our phones and smart tech such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa.

Escalators

Back in the 1920s people had to rely on their own two feet to get them up stairs and across long corridors – what a time waster. However Low predicted that we would invent ‘moving sidewalks’ for our convenience. Much like the escalators and airport travelators which are used daily by many of us.

Renewable energy

Low also believed renewable energy was on the horizon (Getty Stock Images)

Back in Low’s day our country was powered by a combination of coal, gas and oil, creating the infamous smoggy landscapes seen in history textbooks for LS Lowry paintings.

However the inventor realised this wouldn’t be forever, predicting that ‘wind and tide’ would he harnessed to generate power.

“Life is to be made far easier by the use of machinery that will do all the heavy and disagreeable work,” he added.

Sound familiar?

Alarms

Most of us are rudely awoken from our slumber by the sound of our alarms blaring out in the morning, before hitting snooze and repeating the whole process all over again, which is something which Low had envisioned back in the 1920s.

Prior to the creation of the alarm, workers would be woken up by a ‘knocker upper’ which is someone who would go around banging on everyone’s windows in the morning.

Frankly, we’re not sure which of the two is worse.

“I remember being petrified by that.”

Lily-Rose, 25, has followed in her father’s Hollywood footsteps by carving out a career as an actor, with credits including The Dancer, The King and controversial HBO series The Idol.

Her most recent project is a leading role in Robert Eggers’ adaptation of the cult-horror classic Nosferatu alongside Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe.

However, it would appear that gothic horror hasn’t always been a genre which Lily-Rose is a fan of.

During a recent interview with Harpers Bazaar, the star revealed that she had been left ‘traumatised’ by watching her father’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands as a child.

For those who aren’t familiar with the Tim Burton classic, Johnny plays the titular character who has scissors instead of hands.

The film was both a commercial and critical success at the time and beloved by everyone who watched it, excluding a younger Lily-Rose.

So why was the actor so afraid of the film in her younger years? Turns out it had less to do with her father’s character and more the reactions from the film’s townspeople.

“I was traumatised by it,” Lily-Rose explained. “Not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was being so mean to him and I got really upset.”

The 25-year-old went on to explain how the film’s ending – which sees Edward fake his death after the locals turn on him – was particularly distressing to see as a child.

“I remember being petrified by that,” she added.

Fortunately, Lily-Rose has since embraced the world of gothic cinema, with her role as Ellen Hutter in Nosferatu earning her praise from critics.

The film, which developed from an unauthorised Dracula adaptation in the 1920s, sees Ellen stalked and tormented by the vampiric Count Orlok.

Reflecting on whether or not her father’s roles in gothic films had inspired her to take on the role of Ellen, Lily-Rose added that while she and him are ‘very different actors’ the fascination with the supernatural likely runs in the family.

“We’re very different actors, but of course you’re the product of your environment, and it’s a world I’ve always been very interested in,” she said.

“I’m interested in the darker underbelly of things. As an actor, you hope that your role will be as meaty as can be, so you have as much to dive into as possible.”

Nosferatu is in cinemas now.

Heath Ledger’s dad Kim described the night as ‘bittersweet’

Heath Ledger’s family spoke out about the ‘bittersweet’ moment they picked up his posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting actor in The Dark Knight.

Ledger died in 2008 at the age of just 28 following an accidental overdose of prescription medications.

He had already filmed The Dark Knight, which included a tribute to Ledger in the movie’s end credits.

The cast of the film all wore black to the film’s London premiere in honour of the Joker actor, with Christian Bale saying of Ledger in 2008: “When you miss somebody, you want to speak about him. He was a good man, and I was glad to have spent time with him.

“He was somebody who I’d been seeing on a daily basis for months.

“It takes a long time to accept that someone’s gone, when all body and mind are telling you that this is somebody you will know for a great deal of time. He was something of a kindred spirit to myself.”

Ledger’s family accepted the Oscar he won for his role as the Joker, with his sister, mother and father taking the stage.

His father said when accepting the award: “I have to say this is ever so humbling, being amongst such wonderful people and such a wonderful industry.

“This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath’s quiet determination to be accepted by you all here, his peers, within an industry he so loved.”

His mother went on to say: “Heath was such a compassionate and generous soul who added so much excitement and inspiration to our lives. We have been truly overwhelmed by the honour and respect bestowed upon him by this award.

“Tonight we are choosing to celebrate and be happy for what he achieved”.

His father, Kim Ledger, later spoke of the experience of accepting the award in 2016.

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he said that ‘bittersweet is probably the best way [he] can describe that night’.

“It was only a year and a month since his passing. We hadn’t got our heads around the tragedy of losing him, but at the same time, he was receiving such accolades for what he knew was his best work.”

He went on to say: “It was peer recognition that was important to Heath and the Oscar was the epitome of that.”

Ledger’s father stated that the Oscar was in a museum at the time of the interview, but that it would eventually go to Ledger’s daughter Matilda, whom he shared with his Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams.

Williams said in a heartbreaking interview with Porter magazine: “In all honesty, for pretty much everything else, I feel like I’m a believer in not fighting circumstances, accepting where you are and where you’ve been.

“In pretty much all senses but one, I would be able to go totally down that line of thinking were it not for Matilda not having her dad.

“You know, that’s just something that doesn’t…I mean, it just won’t ever be right”.

The shark had bitten the woman so deep it not only severed an artery, but also left two teeth in her tibia bone

A woman who survived a horrifying shark attack has spoken about the moment she thought she was going to die.

Freediver Anika Craney had been swimming in the water along the Queensland coast in Australia when her terrifying ordeal began.

Anika had been on a private boat named Barefoot – with a documentary film crew – when she took one of the newest member’s of the team out into the waters near Fitzroy Island.

But as soon as she entered the ocean, Anika knew something was off.

“The visibility was really murky, we barely saw little fish beyond our arm’s length,” she told Channel 4.

“I popped my head up and said ‘I’m not really comfortable, I think we should head back to the boat.'”

Anika said she was swimming back to the boat when she saw a shark on the sandy floor.

She had been around sharks before, but there was something about this particular shark that made her feel uncomfortable.

“I noticed as it was swimming towards me, its behaviour was not comfortable to me,” she said.

“I looked the shark in the eye and saw it was looking straight at me.”

Anika recalled the terrifying experience (Channel 4)

Anika said she moved her fins in front of her body to prepare herself, but she could never have imagined the next few moments.

“I felt the impact, it hit me so fast, I didn’t even quite realise what had happened,” she recalled.

“I thought it had just hit me with its head so my instant reaction was to kick it off.

“It wasn’t until I saw the blood pooling around me that I realised it had bitten me.”

Anika explained the moment she thought she was going to die, adding: “I started screaming for help, not just because I was losing a lot of blood but because the shark might come back and bite me again, and if it did I might not survive this.

“… I realised my life was in danger and if I wanted to survive this, I had to give it everything I had to get out of the water.

“… A really loud part of me was thinking the shark was going to come up underneath me and bite me again and that loud part of me thought ‘you’re about to die.'”

Anika managed to swim closer to shore where two women handed her a paddle board to prop her leg up.

She began kicking for her life until she reached the sand, where onlookers rushed to help her.

Losing a lot of blood, Anika was rushed to hospital via a helicopter where she was given urgent medical attention.

“The shark bit the lower part of my left leg, all the way to the bone. It left a couple of teeth in my tibia and on the way it severed an artery,” Anika recalled.

“The wound took two months to heal over.”

Anika explained that she returned to the water as soon as she could and also chose to swim with sharks again.

“It was a wonderful way to make peace with the experience,” she added.

This striking astronaut photo shows one of Russia’s deepest lakes sandwiched between two halves of a volcano as its surface was transformed into a reflective sea of swirling clouds thanks to a rare mirror-like phenomenon, known as “sunglint.”

The volcanic “nesting dolls,” collectively known as the Krenitsyna Volcano, are located on the southern tip of Onekotan Island in the Kuril Islands — a Russian archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean between the Kamchatka Peninsula and Hokkaido, the second-largest and northernmost island in Japan.

The volcano has two main parts: The large lake-filled, crater-like depression, known as the Tsar-Rusyr caldera, which spans up to 5 miles (8 kilometers) across; and the cone-shape mountain that rises out of the water, known as the Krenitsyna Peak, which reaches approximately 4,200 feet (1,300 meters) above sea level. This unusual configuration is the result of the volcano collapsing in on itself, before a new peak grew up out of the active remnant.

The crater lake that sits within the Tsar-Rusyr caldera and surrounds Krenitsyna Peak is known as Kol’tsevoye Lake. It is 1,200 feet (370 m) deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Russia, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory.

The Krenitsyna Peak rises out of the deep waters of Kol’tsevoye Lake, which in turn sits in the much larger Tsar-Rusyr caldera. (Image credit: Getty Images)

Sunglint effect

In the astronaut photo, Kol’tsevoye Lake looks as if it has been covered by low-lying clouds sitting at the bottom of the caldera. However, there are no clouds in this image. Instead, what you can see is clouds passing high over the island that have been reflected off the water’s surface.

Normally, a standard reflection would not be strong enough to make the clouds look so real. But in this case, the orientation of the sun relative to the ISS means that the sun’s full beam is being reflected straight back at the astronaut taking the photo, creating an effect known as sunglint, which transforms a large body of water into a giant silver mirror. The caldera’s rim stands roughly 1,000 feet (300 m) above the lake’s surface, creating shadows that help to accentuate the cloudy illusion.

Onekotan Island is home to two nesting volcanos: Krenitsyns Volcano in the south (bottom of image) and Nemo Volcano in the north (top of image). (Image credit: NASA Space Shuttle Program)

However, the clouds are still only visible because the astronaut is positioned above the volcano at an angle that allows them to see the sunglint without being right on top of the island, which would mean the clouds would block their view of the lake.

The Krenitsyna Volcano is still active and last erupted in 1952 with a “moderate” outburst that lasted for around a week, according to the Smithsonian Institute’s Global Volcanism Program. But its last major eruption was likely around 7,600 years ago.

Interestingly, another set of volcanic nesting dolls with its own crater lake, collectively known as the Nemo Volcano, is positioned on the northern end of Onekotan Island. However, in this case, the lake does not surround the peak that has grown out of this collapsed caldera.

The couple’s bodies were found in separate rooms in the Vietnam holiday villa

Tributes have been pouring in for a couple who were found dead in a villa in Vietnam just days after announcing their engagement.

British tourist Greta Marie Otteson and her South African fiancé Els Arno Quinton recently became engaged, having posted a video announcing their milestone on YouTube days prior to their passing.

Greta was just 33-years-old, while husband-to-be Els was just 36, when their bodies were found in separate rooms in the same villa on Boxing Day, after a cleaner came to the holiday home located in Hoi An Town in central Quang Nam province.

Authorities are now investigating the tragic incident, with police officers finding empty bottles of wine at the scene.

Red Eye Studios posted a montage they made of the couple to celebrate their upcoming marriage, with the video showing Greta and Arno dancing and holding hands in all-white.

The tribute was posted with a description, reading: “Living in the romantic city of Hoi-An, our good friends Greta and Arno decided to surprise their families with a beautiful video to announce their engagement.

“This shoot was charged with so much emotion, reminding us how powerful the union of two souls can be.

“Congratulations to you both from everyone here at Red Eye Studios! We will miss you great souls…”

It is believed that they became engaged in December.

A Quang Nam Provincial Police spokesperson stated: “There were no signs of ransacking at the scene. The victims’ belongings and phones were untouched.”

There’s said to be no signs of scratches or physical trauma on the bodies, though empty liquor bottles have been collected from the room for analysis.

The pair had been staying at the tourist villa since July, though Greta is known for enjoying her travels, having lived in Dubai and backpacked around Asia before settling in Vietnam.

Arno’s friend Dayle Visser took to social media to share an emotional tribute, writing: “Rest in peace my brother. Thank you for always being the fierce friend you were. You saved me many a time.

“You were real and lived life harder than most people could ever dream of. I love you and I will always miss you.”

One of Greta’s friends added that she loved him ‘unconditionally’ as his ‘bedrock’, adding that she gave him the freedom to do what he wanted in life.

They added: “There are two distinct things that are so prominent in my thoughts and that is her laugh and how much love they constantly [threw] at each other, regardless of who was around.

“They celebrated each other there and I know they will continue doing that, wherever they are.”

A Foreign Office spokesman stated: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Vietnam and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Richard Spencer has bravely spoken about experiencing domestic violence in his 20 year relationship

Warning: This article contains discussion of domestic violence which some readers may find distressing

A man who experienced harrowing domestic violence in his relationship has explained the importance of recording the abuse in nanny cam videos.

For two decades Richard Spencer suffered physical, verbal, financial and psychological violence at the hands of his then-wife Sheree, which came to an end after a friend reported the abuse to local authorities.

Sheree’s abuse would include attempting to make it look like Richard was the violent spouse, leading the 48-year-old to begin documenting his attacks as evidence that the opposite was happening.

This included harrowing clips caught on a nanny cam which showed Sheree verbally and physically abusing Richard, with one clip seeing her threatening him with a knife in their children’s playroom.

Footage captured included Sheree brandishing a knife and threatening Richard (Channel 5)

Footage captured included Sheree brandishing a knife and threatening Richard (Channel 5)

Richard would later send the footage to a friend in June 2021, who reported the shocking violence to the police.

Sheree was subsequently arrested and would later admit to three offences – causing actual bodily harm between January and April 2020, as well as coercive and controlling behaviour between January 2016 and June 2021.

She was handed a four-year prison sentence.

Richard has since shared his story publicly in order to raise awareness about domestic violence against men, working alongside the ManKind Initiative and sharing the footage of Sheree’s attacks in Channel 5 documentary My Wife, My Abuser: The Secret Footage last year.

Speaking about his experience in a new interview with The Sun, Richard explained the importance of having the footage when it came to proving his experiences of abuse.

“I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn’t had the video evidence,” he said of the footage.

Sheree’s attempts to paint Richard as violent had included shouting out the window that he was hurting her and sending pictures of bruises to friends.

He continued: “In the family court alone Sheree made 42 false allegations against me and tried to claim I was an abuser. The footage I collected means that she is the one in prison and that I am still part of my daughters’ lives.”

Richard has also urged male victims of domestic violence to reach out for help as well as his thoughts on how to support a loved one who may be experiencing abuse.

Speaking about his experience in an interview with LADbible last November, Richard also urged anyone who believes a friend or family member is experiencing domestic violence not to confront the perpetrator.

“One thing I would say you probably definitely shouldn’t do would be not to confront the perpetrator,” he explained.

“If you antagonise that person, make them aware that you know about abuse, the chances are that the abuse could escalate, and could have stark consequences. I would definitely put all your focus on being empathic and supporting the victim.”

If you are experiencing domestic violence, please know that you are not alone. ManKind offers confidential support for men experiencing domestic violence on 0808 800 1170 (Freephone – which will not show on your bills) or 01823 334 244. The passengers gained a whole new day after flying over the Pacific

Ever wished that you could time travel? Well, now you can do it on an aeroplane.

Forget technological advancements and films that make you think that you’ve got to wait hundreds of years to be able to jump years, months or days into the future or back to the past.

There’s a way you can do that, just by booking a plane ticket.

Okay, so it sounds crazy, but a passenger plane that took off from Hong Kong on January 1, 2025, was transported back to 2024 upon landing.

It would be amazing to be able to celebrate New Year’s Eve twice in the space of a few hours.

That’s exactly what happened.

So, those who traveled from Hong Kong, China, to Los Angeles’s International Airport, arrived on New Year’s Eve 2024.

This is all thanks to our strange time zone areas.

The Cathay Pacific Flight 880 left Hong Kong just after midnight local time and as it made its way over the Pacific Ocean, it ended up crossing the International Date Line about six hours into the 12-hour trip.

As it entered the crossover, the plane was transported (not literally) back in time to just before 8:30 pm when it landed on Tuesday at LAX.

The International Date Line (aka IDL) is an invisible line down the middle of the Pacific Ocean that essentially represents the point at which two dates are separated from each other.

Those who live on one side will be one day behind the other, and the other is a day forward.

Get it?

So, for those who fly anywhere East will lose a day, and those who travel West will gain a day because of the line and time zone shift.

The plane lost a day after flying over the Pacific (timeanddate)

The plane lost a day after flying over the Pacific (timeanddate)

Imagine this: It’s 2am on New Year’s Day, you’re hungover and you want to be able to sleep for at least 12 hours to cure yourself, but you don’t want to risk wasting your entire day spent in bed.

So, you book a last-minute flight that’s heading West, and viola, you’ve been able to sleep on the plane, get a hotel and then sleep for an entire day and you’re still technically on January 1 because of the IDL.

Time and Date explained: “The International Date Line (IDL) is located at about 180° east (or west). It is halfway around the world from the prime meridian (0° longitude), the reference point of time zones, which runs through Greenwich, UK.

“The date line runs from the North Pole to the South Pole and marks the Western and Eastern Hemisphere divide. It is not straight but curves around landmasses and national borders. For example, it leans towards the east at the Bering Strait between Asia and North America, leaving Cape Dezhnev in Russia a day ahead of Cape Prince of Wales in Alaska even though they are only 80 km (50 mi) apart.”

There you have it – a roadmap to follow if ever you’re in need of a few more hours in the day.

A TikToker has revealed what she discovered after buying a mystery ‘unclaimed’ suitcase and why she remains ‘sceptical’

Ever wondered what happens if you forget your suitcase and never bother to pick it back up again?

Well, first of all, I’m judging you, because who does that? But then again, we all have our reasons.

And it turns out if you have forgotten your suitcase, or simply decided you couldn’t be bothered to wait for it to come out onto the conveyor belt and buggered off without it, then it may actually end up being bought by someone else.

You’ve heard of mystery storage units, but mystery suitcase, anyone?

A TikToker called Becky – who goes by @beckysbazaar – took to the platform on December 18 to reveal she’d bought a piece of ‘unclaimed luggage’ from London’s Heathrow Airport for $159.79.

Becky bought the suitcase via a company called Undelivrd – described on its website as a ‘sustainable and economical way of dealing with the lost luggage’.

On Undelivrd’s site, you can buy ‘full lost and unclaimed airport luggage’ which has either been lost in transit and unclaimed, ended up in storage for ‘months’, or nearly destroyed.

But what ended up being inside and was it worth the sum?

Would you take a gamble on a suitcase for $150? (TikTok/ @beckysbazaar)

Would you take a gamble on a suitcase for $150? (TikTok/ @beckysbazaar)

Well, Becky reveals the first thing she saw after unwrapping and zipping open the case: a pair of ‘Black sparkly UGG boots’.

“I have absolutely no idea if they’re real or not,” the TikToker admits. “But they were brand new so.”

Up next? Well, another pair of footwear. Once again, who’s to say whether they’re the real deal or fakes, but inside the case was also a pair of ‘Juicy Couture slides’.

Oh, and what else could you want more than a box of Pokemon cards too? As Becky notes – “So random.”

Next up is not just one, but two pairs of hair straighteners.

And Becky even revealed she found an Apple iPad concealed beneath too – the case now certainly more than making up for the $150 she splashed on it.

Becky explains this is the ‘best lost luggage’ case she’s received so far, but notes she remains ‘sceptical’.

There were a few winning items inside (TikTok/ @beckysbazaar)

There were a few winning items inside (TikTok/ @beckysbazaar)

Why? Because ‘none of it actually makes any sense to be a legitimate person’s suitcase,’ the TikToker argues.

There was a bag of toiletries and one with makeup in alongside other random bits of clothing.

The other side of the suitcase contained neck pillows and fitness watches, although Becky notes she couldn’t actually get them to work – shame.

Add in a baby pair of Adidas trainers, a Kindle, and some headphones and well, it’s a pretty solid haul.

And it’s not taken long for people to flock to the post to weigh in on the haul.

“Hope the iPad can help you find whose bag it is and send it back,” another said.

“It’s exciting to dress up in gorgeous clothes and to feel sexy and to look sexy. It’s wonderful, but it’s a trap. You become satisfied with that being enough, then later in life it isn’t enough,” shared Novak.

After leaving Hollywood, she said she went ahead and dedicated herself to her twin passions, art and animals. She found her greatest teachers in animals, not just dogs and cats but also horses and llamas. Her relationships with animals have been the most significant in her life.

This relationship has fulfilled her mothering instinct since she never had children. When asked if she wanted children, she admitted she didn’t. Kim Novak was always afraid they might inherit mental health issues and didn’t want them to suffer.

As for the animals, they required her to meet them halfway, as they were not immediately accepting of humans. “They understand a person who’s genuine so I had to become more real and that made me rely on my inner self — and that also encouraged me to paint,” she narrated.

Novak also learned to value aspects beyond physical appearance. This was a significant shift for someone once recognized primarily for her looks as a movie star. Embracing this change, she realized that her outward appearance was irrelevant to her true self and creative pursuits.

The actress also expressed a desire for people to recognize her not just as a movie star but as an artist. Her paintings, showcased in a 2019 retrospective at the Butler Museum in Youngstown, Ohio, embodied this passion.

The actress found joy in painting because it allowed her to take on the role of director, free from outside influence. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock, Novak aims for her paintings to convey a sense of mystery at first glance.

She manages to produce whatever she wants because, unlike acting, painting allows her to take on the roles of director, producer, and actor within her art. “I love being the director, the producer, the actor in my paintings. This is who I am. I want people to see I was not just a movie star,” she revealed.

While some have criticized Novak’s appearance and cosmetic procedures, others have praised her. One fan commented, “She looks amazing.” Another admirer concurred, writing, “Kim, you look absolutely lovely, I daresay you don’t look even half your age. You are timelessly beautiful.”

A third fan added“Great actress, and a beautiful lady inside and out 🎉🎉👏.” After living in Carmel, California, for two decades, Novak is now settled in Oregon, surrounded by her beloved horses. She lost her husband, Malloy, in 2020.

The actress turned 91 on February 13, 2024, and enjoys a peaceful life away from the public eye. Her longtime manager and close friend, Sue Cameron, shared that Novak spent her birthday having a picnic on her property with friends and lots of fudge.
