Mahomes’ mother, Randi Mahomes, announced Friday that her father – Patrick’s grandfather – is in hospice care.

“My dad is in a hospice and I’m lost for words,” Randi shared on her Instagram Story, along with a photo of the two together.

She had previously mentioned her father’s declining health last fall but did not reveal any specific diagnosis.

The heartbreaking news comes just two days before Mahomes and the Chiefs are set to host the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game on Sunday.

Balancing Family and Football

While Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, have not publicly addressed the situation, the couple is already juggling life as a family of five.

They recently welcomed their third child, a daughter named Golden Raye, on January 12, during the Chiefs’ bye week. Golden joins siblings Sterling Skye, 3, and Patrick “Bronze” Lavon, 2.

As the Chiefs prepare for their shot at a historic Super Bowl “three-peat” — a feat no NFL team has ever accomplished — Mahomes has remained focus. The star quarterback participated in an outdoor practice session in Kansas City on Friday, just days after leading the Chiefs to a 23-14 victory over the Houston Texans in the divisional round.

The win coincided with Randi Mahomes’ 49th birthday, which she celebrated with a family photo featuring Patrick, Brittany, and his brother Jackson. “Winning on and off the field! I am so proud of you, son,” she captioned the post. “Grateful for the moments with family that mean the most.”

Facing a Tough Opponent

The Chiefs are gearing up to face the Bills, a team they’ve eliminated in three of the last four postseasons. However, Buffalo handed Kansas City their only loss at full strength this season, beating them 30-21 in Week 11.

Mahomes knows the stakes are high as the Chiefs aim to secure a spot in their third consecutive Super Bowl.

“It’s the AFC championship game. You’ve got to put it all on the line in order to win and try to get to the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said, per KMBC. “This is a great football team we’re going up against, so I think all of us are going to go out there and give it everything we have.”

Mahomes also acknowledged the unique challenge of competing against players he shares a personal bond with. “Whenever you go up against the best, it brings the best out of you,” he added. “To go up against someone that you have a friendship with off the field as well… it’s just like a brother or anything else.

“When you compete, you’re going to compete, but when you’re off the field, you’re going to joke around and have fun, too.”

As the Mahomes family navigates the emotional weight of their personal circumstances, Patrick faces the challenging task of remaining focused on leading his team to victory. With the AFC Championship game just around the corner, all eyes are on the star quarterback to see if he can deliver under pressure.

New Amendment proposal could keep Donald Trump as president until 2033

It has certainly been a week for the history books for the United States.

Donald Trump, 78, was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday (20 January), marking a historic return to the White House.

After his first term ended in 2021, Trump became the second president in US history to serve non-consecutive terms (following Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president).

Now, under the current 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution, US presidents can only serve two terms in Office.

However, one congressman is hoping to change that.

Shortly after Trump’s inauguration, Tennessee congressman Andy Ogles introduced a Joint Resolution aimed at amending the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

If Ogles’ proposal succeeds, a president could potentially serve a third term – meaning Trump could – in theory – be POTUS until 2033 if the proposal was successful and he was successful in the 2028 presidential election.

The existing text of the 22nd Amendment reads: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

Ogles believes that an additional term for Trump is necessary to achieve his vision for the nation.

“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles stated in a press release.

“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” Ogles continued.

“To that end, I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms. This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”

Congressman Ogles added: “In just a few short days, President Trump has already taken action to undo the catastrophic policies of the Biden Administration and put the United States back on the path to strength and prosperity.”

The press release would then heap praise upon Trump’s actions regarding the southern US border crisis, targeting Mexican cartels, and “reaffirming legally that there are only two genders”, among others.

Immediate Changes Under Trump’s New Administration

Within hours of being sworn in, Trump took action by signing several executive orders and memorandums. Among the most notable was the mass pardon of 1,500 individuals either convicted or facing charges related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riots.

In a controversial move, Trump also issued a directive defining gender as strictly binary—male and female—claiming it was necessary to “defend women from gender ideology extremism and restore biological truth.”

Within the White House itself, Trump has stated that he is in the process of “identifying and removing over a thousand Presidential Appointees from the previous Administration, who are not aligned with our vision to Make America Great Again”.

Trump also temporarily reversed the TikTok ban, which had taken effect just days before his inauguration. His administration plans to conduct further reviews of the app’s national security implications.

The White House released a statement explaining the decision: “To fulfil those responsibilities, I intend to consult with my advisors, including the heads of relevant departments and agencies on the national security concerns posed by TikTok, and to pursue a resolution that protects national security while saving a platform used by 170 million Americans.

“My Administration must also review sensitive intelligence related to those concerns and evaluate the sufficiency of mitigation measures TikTok has taken to date.”

While Ogles’ proposed amendment faces an uphill battle, it has already ignited a fiery debate about the limits of executive power and the future of the presidency under Trump’s leadership.

President Trump signed over 20 executive orders and actions on Inauguration Day ‒ more than any previous US president – as he wasted no time in making his vision for America a reality.

One order, titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government”, has drawn significant attention for its implications on gender identity and official documentation.

Trump’s Policy and Its Implications

The executive order, which centers around the belief that there are only two genders — male and female — affects a range of federal policies.

“It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female,” the order reads. “These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”

One major outcome is that transgender women will no longer be housed in female prisons. Another significant impact is on US passports, particularly for individuals identifying as non-binary.

The U.S. State Department has now frozen all applications for passports featuring an ‘X’ gender marker or requests for changes to gender identity, following Trump’s directive, per The Economic Times.

The executive order mandates that all government-issued identification documents must reflect an individual’s “immutable biological classification as either male or female.”

State Department’s Immediate Action

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has instructed State Department personnel to implement the order without delay.

According to an internal email obtained by The Guardian, Rubio stated: “The policy of the United States is that an individual’s sex is not changeable.”

The email clarified that “sex, and not gender, shall be used” for official documentation, including passports and consular birth reports abroad.

While new applications for passports with an ‘X’ marker are frozen, there is no immediate impact on previously issued passports.

Existing Passports Remain Valid — For Now

The White House has confirmed that passports already issued with an ‘X’ gender marker will remain valid. However, guidance on the renewal process for these passports is still under review.

Rubio’s email noted: “Guidance on existing passports containing an X sex marker will come via other channels.”

Background on Non-Binary Passports

The ‘X’ gender marker was first introduced during the Biden administration in April 2022. Then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the measure on Transgender Day of Visibility, touting it as a step toward inclusivity for non-binary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming Americans.

Trump’s policy marks a stark reversal of this move, signaling a broader agenda to undo many of the Biden administration’s initiatives.

An intimacy expert has opened up about how often married couples should be rolling around together between the sheets.

Couples may see a fizzle when it comes to their long-term relationships. Credit: franckreporter/Getty

Now, we all know that the start of relationships can be full of excitement, electricity, and lust.

But what happens when that initial spark fades and you’re left juggling household chores, paying bills, children and wondering, “Is our bedroom game… okay?”

If this sounds familiar (and let’s be real, it probably does if you clicked on this article), don’t panic. Help is here!

Enter Juli Slattery, a US-based clinical psychologist and intimacy expert who’s all about helping couples navigate the highs and lows of their romantic relationships. She runs a website dedicated to all things sex and relationships and recently shared some wisdom in her video titled, How Often Should Married Couples Have Sex?

GettyImages-892967862 (5).jpg

Some couples may see frequency in the bedroom fizzle out – but don’t be alarmed. Credit: Peter Cade/Getty

Quality Over Quantity

In her video, Slattery argues that couples should focus on cultivating deeper intimacy rather than obsessing over a magic number.

“I think it’s important to think about the quality of sexual intimacy within your marriage,” she says. “Is it just a perpetual ‘hooking up’ because you’re supposed to? Or is it a journey of communication, sharing, and fun?”

While she notes that studies show most married couples tend to have sex about once a week, she’s quick to remind us that there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach.

“If your desires and your level of intimacy, fun, and interaction is more than that… that’s your normal,” Slattery explains. She emphasizes that what works for one couple may not work for another, as factors like stress, health, and individual preferences all play a role.

That being said, over on Slattery’s website, Authentic Intimacy, she admits that research suggests “that couples who have sex at least once a week have greater relationship satisfaction”. However – once again – she stresses that numbers aren’t everything, and that some couples “may actually need to take a break from sex in order to build true sexual intimacy”.

This is echoed by Dr. Logan Levkoff – who holds a PhD in human sexuality, marriage and family life education from New York University – who told NBC News: “We have lots of expectations about how relationships are ‘supposed’ to look.”

Much like Slattery, Levkoff insists “there is no ‘normal'”.

Married or Not, Intimacy Is Key

While much of Slattery’s advice comes from a Christian perspective with a focus on marriage, she insists that the principles of intimacy and connection apply to all long-term relationships—wedding rings optional.

Experts say there is no “normal”, but that intimacy is key. Credit: Erdark/Getty

“The most important thing is that you work towards being on the same page and you’re actually building intimacy together,” she says.

“If you’re desires and your level of intimacy, fun and interaction is more than that… that’s your normal,” she adds.

And let’s be honest: skipping the wedding aisle doesn’t mean skipping out on a meaningful partnership. After all, weddings can be super expensive (and who needs that stress, anyway?).

Take the Pressure Off

So, if you’ve been stressing about your after-hours activities, Slattery’s advice is a breath of fresh air. Instead of worrying about what everyone else is doing — or how often they’re doing it — focus on building a connection that feels right for you and your partner.

At the end of the day, there’s no “normal” number when it comes to intimacy. As Slattery puts it, “It’s a journey of communication, sharing, and fun.”

So, whether your bedroom is buzzing seven days a week or just occasionally, remember: it’s all about what works for you.

Steve Irwin’s daughter Bindi shares heartbreaking health update: ‘I was tested for everything. Every tropical disease’

Bindi Irwin shared a heartbreaking health update and opened up about a moment that “broke [her] heart.”

The 26-year-old conservationist, who revealed her diagnosis last year, expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support from women who related to her experience.

Speaking to The Courier Mail, Bindi reflected on how her chronic pain was often misunderstood.

“Everyone thought I was becoming this flaky person because I would bow out of commitments at the last minute because I was in so much pain,” she said.

In August 2023, Bindi revealed the uphill battle she faced to receive a proper diagnosis, as many medical professionals initially dismissed her symptoms.

Once diagnosed, she found herself overwhelmed by the sheer number of women who reached out with similar stories.

“In some ways the response to telling my story was devastating because so many women came forward,” she said.

“It broke my heart. Some of their stories were identical to mine, some had taken even longer to get a diagnosis, and there was a plethora of women’s health issues shared with me, and with each other.”

Despite the difficulty, Bindi found comfort in the connections forged through shared experiences. “It was women supporting other women, and that part of it was beautiful,” she added.

Bindi has been vocal about how challenging it was to have her pain taken seriously. In an earlier interview with PEOPLE magazine, she described the years of uncertainty and invalidation she endured before receiving her diagnosis.

“I was tested for everything. Every tropical disease, Lyme disease, cancer, you name it. I had every blood test and scan imaginable,” she said.

Doctors often dismissed her pain as minor or psychological, suggesting it was “all in her head.” Bindi said she even began to question herself after countless failed attempts to find answers.

“You wind up in this strange space of self-doubt, fear, and insecurity,” she shared.

The turning point came when her condition worsened dramatically, culminating in an episode where she collapsed in a fetal position.

Endometriosis is a painful condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. Symptoms can include abdominal, pelvic, and lower back pain, as well as painful menstruation, bloating, and nausea.

After years of misdiagnosis, Bindi finally found a doctor who took her concerns seriously. Earlier this year, she underwent a life-changing surgery that removed 37 lesions and a “chocolate cyst” from her ovary.

The procedure was performed at the Seckin Endometriosis Center in New York City. “I feel like I have a second chance at life,” Bindi said. “It’s not like a light switch, but every week I feel like I’m able to do a little bit more.”

In May 2023, Bindi reassured her fans that she was recovering well and expressed her gratitude for the medical care she received.

Donald Trump was officially sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday (January 20) in Washington, DC.

The 78-year-old has become the first person since Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms as President of the United States.

Trump celebrated his victory with a star-studded inauguration attended by his family, tech billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, musicians, and members of his cabinet.

VIP guests at the event were treated to a gift bag filled with eye-catching, and at times confusing, items.

Here’s what made it into the bag that’s got everyone talking.

Patriotic Packaging

According to Page Six, attendees picked up their event passes at the historic Decatur House, located just steps from the White House in Washington, DC.

While the newly-elected leader’s 2017 inauguration featured invites tucked into a navy folio, this year’s edition went full-on “Republican red”.

Luxe Leather Goods

The standout items were a red leather journal embossed in gold with a sketch of the US Capitol and a matching red leather coin and watch dish, also featuring the Capitol building.

The patriotic designs seemed carefully curated for the president’s important guests.

A Medal of (Debatable) Honor

One of the more unusual items in the bag was a large bronze-colored medal featuring silhouettes of Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

While the artistic accuracy of the depictions might be up for debate, the medal also displayed their names on the reverse side, cementing the duo’s historic ticket.

A Festive Touch

Guests also received a glittering White House Christmas ornament, perfect for their holiday decorations, and a red “challenge coin,” adding another collectible to the mix.

A Presidential Beverage

Perhaps the most surprising item was a commemorative bottle of Trump’s go-to drink, Diet Coke.

The bottle was labeled: “The inauguration of the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, January 20, 2025.”

The Ultimate Tote

Finally, everything came packaged in a white canvas bag with a red sketch of the Capitol, a fitting carrier for the unique haul of inaugural goodies.

From elegant leather to Diet Coke memorabilia, Trump’s inauguration gifts were as bold and unconventional as the man himself.

The 58-year-old actor, best known for portraying Ross Geller in Friends, was seen on Sunday evening (January 19) leaving Spago, an upscale Beverly Hills restaurant, alongside a much younger woman.

According to Daily Mail, the woman has been identified as 29-year-old Eliana Jolkovsky, a UCLA medical student and Jewish activist.

Schwimmer, dressed in dark clothing with a cap and light beard, kept a low profile as he accompanied Jolkovsky, who is part Korean, to an Uber – even holding the car door open for her. Meanwhile, the woman turned heads in chic white fold-over boots with a kitten heel.

Per the UCLA student’s social media, she performed cadaveric gut dissections during her medical studies, is passionate about Mizrahi history, attends Shabbat, and donates to support Holocaust survivors living in poverty.

Her Instagram also hints at her interest in fashion, where she frequently showcases stylish looks and full makeup.

Schwimmer hasn’t been linked to anyone romantically since his 2017 split from Zoe Buckman, who is 39.

The former couple, who were married for six years from 2010, share a daughter named Cleo Buckman Schwimmer.

The pair announced their separation in a joint statement, writing that they were taking “some time apart while we determine the future of our relationship”.

“Our priority is, of course, our daughter’s happiness and well-being during this challenging time, and so we ask for your support and respect for our privacy as we continue to raise her together and navigate this new chapter for our family,” they concluded, per News.com.au.

While his personal life garners attention, Schwimmer continues to reflect fondly on his iconic role on Friends.

In a recent appearance on Good Morning America, he shared that he remains “pretty close” with co-star Matt LeBlanc.

“LeBlanc and I are pretty close, even though I live in New York and he’s in LA,” he said, recalling a moment when his co-star surprised him with a hilarious clip from the beloved sitcom.

“He’ll send me a message with a clip from [Friends] – which, it’s always funny to relive something we shot, what, 25 years ago or more?” he added.

The actor also shared heartwarming stories from fans, telling the hosts: “When I meet people on the street from another country and they say, ‘Just have to say, I learned English watching your show,’ or a father stops me and says, ‘My kid was really, really ill and the one thing that kept them going in the hospital was just watching Friends.’

“It’s kind of the gift that keeps on giving,” Schwimmer remarked. “You feel really grateful and blessed to have done something that people find fun.”

During his election campaign, the 47th president of the United States promised to prioritize government transparency by declassifying files related to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

The 78-year-old addressed the matter at a massive ‘Make America Great Again’ rally at Washington, DC’s Capital One Arena last week, saying: “As the first step toward restoring transparency and accountability to government, we will also reverse the over-classification of government documents.”

“And in the coming days, we are going to make public remaining records relating to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,” he added.

On Thursday (January 23), Trump followed through by signing an executive order aimed at fulfilling this promise.

“A lot of people are waiting for this for long, for years, for decades,” he told reporters. “And everything will be revealed,” per BBC.

JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas.

He was fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald from a nearby building, though theories about a possible conspiracy have persisted for decades.

Kennedy’s assassination left the nation stunned and led to a landmark investigation by the Warren Commission, which concluded Oswald acted alone.

The tragic event remains one of the most debated moments in American history.

JFK’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg, has criticized President Trump’s executive order, stating there is “nothing heroic” about his decision to release files related to his grandfather’s tragic assassination.

“JFK conspiracy theories — The truth is alot sadder than the myth — a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Not part of an inevitable grand scheme,” he wrote.

“Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back. There’s nothing heroic about it,” he added, signing the post off with “Jack”.

The attorney general and the director of national intelligence are now tasked with developing a plan within 15 days to declassify the JFK files, and within 45 days for the other cases, per Sky News.

However, it remains uncertain when the files will actually be released, and experts on the cases are skeptical about any significant revelations.

Trump has also promised to release previously classified files relating to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, JFK’s brother, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

If you’ve ever had uncomfortable ear fullness or dulled hearing, then you’re probably already familiar with cerumen impaction — or, to put it simply, an earwax blockage.

Too much earwax can lead to an annoying blockage. If you’re prone to earwax blockages, then you probably are looking for some ways to easily remove earwax at home.

There are easy and safe ways you can remove any extra earwax. But there are also some options you want to avoid. Let’s take a look at home remedies that can help you safely remove earwax.

What is earwax?

Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a substance that the body naturally makes on a regular basis.

Skin cells inside the ear are constantly turning over to provide new, fresh skin. But, unlike skin on other parts of the body, the ear canal provides little room for dead cells to go. So, to prevent dead skin cells from clogging up the ear, glands inside the ear make oily substance to help trap dead skin cells. This creates earwax.

Earwax is actually very helpful, as it helps moisturize the ears. It also protects the ears by blocking bacteria, fungus, and other substances from entering the inner parts of the ear.

In most cases, ear wax doesn’t need to be removed.  Experts at the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recommend that people don’t try to remove earwax that’s not causing any symptoms. Earwax is protective, and continuing to remove it can possibly lead to more problems, such as infection. This can even increase the risk of a clogged ear in the future.

But when wax starts to pile up, it can be a problem. Too much wax can lead to discomfort, temporary hearing loss, and sometimes even an ear infection.

What causes an earwax blockage?

Normally earwax moves out of the ear when people move their jaw. This happens a little at a time so you don’t usually notice it.

But sometimes this doesn’t work the way it should and wax sits in the ear too long, becoming dry and hard. This leads to stuck earwax — also called an earwax impaction.  This is more common in people who wear hearing aids. Hearing aids can block movement of wax out of the ear.  Children and older adults are at higher risk for developing earwax impactions. But it can happen to anyone.

Stuck earwax can cause symptoms like:

  • Muffled hearing

  • Ringing in the ears

  • Ear fullness or discomfort

  • Ear itching

What are some home remedies that help remove earwax?

If you’re prone to earwax impactions, you probably want a few tips to remove earwax quickly and easily at home. There are some safe and effective ways to do this at home.

At-home earwax treatments include ear drops, sprays, or irrigation solutions.

Ear drops or irrigation should never cause pain. If you try these earwax removal home remedies and experience pain, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Ear irrigation

Irrigation with warm saline or sterile water can be a good first step toward at-home earwax removal. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Fill a small (5 mL to 10 mL) syringe full of saline or sterile water. Always use sterile water, never use tap water as it can increase the risk for serious infections. You want the liquid to be room or body temperature. Putting liquid that’s cool or cold into your ear can lead to unpleasant side effects like nausea, dizziness, and vertigo.

  2. While keeping your head upright and a towel or bin under your ear, slowly squirt the fluid upwards toward the wax collection. Try not to squirt the water directly at your eardrum, as this may damage the eardrum. Also avoid irrigating too fast, as this can cause ear pain, or even bleeding.

  3. Tilt your head sideways to remove the water or saline.

Earwax softeners

Sometimes, the earwax needs to be softened a little with earwax removal drops or sprays. These can be used alone or with irrigation for earwax removal at home. Once the earwax is softened, the body can often remove the wax on its own, no irrigation needed.

Earwax softeners are available over the counter or you can make your own. Popular options include:

  1. Carbamide peroxide: Carbamide peroxide drops are available over the counter. You can place 5 to 10 drops in the affected ear twice per day for up to 7 days.

  2. Baking soda solution: A baking soda solution can also help soften wax. You can make it on your own using 1 part sterile water and 1 part baking soda. Fill a small syringe with the solution and place 5 drops in your ear once a day.

  3. Hydrogen peroxide 3% solution: You can buy this solution at any drugstore. To soften wax, fill a small syringe with the solution and place 5 to 10 drops in your ear canal 15 to 30 minutes before irrigating.

  4. Mineral or baby oil: These are available over the counter. Experts recommend placing 3 drops into the affected ear at bedtime for 3 or 4 days. Other oils like olive oil and camphor oil also appear to be safe to use. Or you can try products containing arachis oil (peanut oil) or almond oil, as long as you do not have a nut allergy.

  5. Liquid docusate sodium: Docusate sodium is a medication that’s meant for constipation, but it can also be used to help soften earwax. Experts recommend putting 1 mL into the affected ear 15 minutes before irrigation.

What options aren’t safe to use for at-home earwax removal?

Next let’s look at home remedies for earwax removal that are best to avoid.

Cotton swabs

It may be tempting, but don’t try to dig out your earwax using cotton tipped swabs (like Q-Tips). Many people injure or rupture their eardrums trying to dig out their earwax.

Plus these items can push earwax deeper into your ear canal making it harder to get out. And deeper earwax is also more likely to touch your eardrum and cause hearing changes and pain.

Hair pins or paper clips

Healthcare providers sometimes caution patients, “Don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!” In addition to driving wax deeper into the ear, objects like hair pins or paper clips can damage the skin lining the ear canal and bring in harmful bacteria. That may lead to an infection of the outer ear, called otitis externa.

Ear candles

Ear candles are long, hollow candles that are inserted into the ear canal. The end sticking out of the ear is then lit. As you might imagine, people using ear candles can burn themselves. And ear candles may plug the ear with candle wax or rupture the eardrum.

When should you see a healthcare provider for earwax removal?

Not everyone should try to remove their earwax at home. You should see a healthcare provider before trying to remove wax if you have had trauma to the ear or any of these symptoms:

  • Fever

  • Ear drainage

  • Severe ear pain

  • Hearing loss

  • Ear ringing

These can be symptoms of an outer ear infection or inner ear infection.

People with medical conditions that increase their risk for bleeding or infection should see a healthcare provider for earwax removal. These conditions include:

  • Bleeding disorders like hemophilia

  • Liver disease

  • Low platelet counts

  • Weakened immune systems

  • A history of ear surgery

People who take blood thinners like coumadinclopidogrel, or novel anticoagulants like rivaroxaban should also see a healthcare provider for earwax removal.

Experts also advise against at-home earwax removal in young children.

Can you prevent earwax from building up over time?

Yes. One of the best things you can do to prevent earwax buildup is to avoid overcleaning. In this case, you may have a higher risk of a clogged ear in the future. So unless that earwax is really bothering you, leave it be and let your body remove it naturally.

And most importantly, avoid putting any objects into the ear, including cotton swabs, hair pins, or ear candles. These can not only damage the ear, but they can also worsen the problem by pushing more wax deeper into the canal.

The bottom line

Earwax is a natural way the body protects the eardrum from viruses, bacteria, and other toxins in the environment. Yet sometimes, too much can build up and become a problem. Usually, softening the wax and irrigating the ear at home will get extra wax out. But, don’t hesitate to see your healthcare provider when you have any concerning symptoms, such as pain, drainage, or hearing loss.
