The compatibility update comes into force on New Year’s Day

Several cellphones won’t be able to access WhatsApp from tomorrow.

Technology is forever evolving and, if I’m honest, it’s pretty darn hard to keep up with.

I mean, if you’d have told me 10 years ago that Apple would release its Vision Pro headset that allows people to interact with digital content and apps in their physical space, I’d have laughed you out of the room.

With the fast developing world of technology speeding up as each year passes, it’s no surprise that some people have given up trying to keep up with the latest releases.

However, if you’re hanging on to a particularly old cellphone and you’re a frequent WhatsApp user, then it might be time for you to bite the bullet and invest in a new model.

Why, I hear you ask? Because several older devices won’t be able to access WhatsApp services from tomorrow (January 1) onwards.

The app is making changes to its compatibility with operating systems – Android KitKat OS in particular.

Those who still have KitKat – which was released over 10 years ago – on their phones won’t be able to use WhatsApp in 2025.

However, if you still use KitKat and are able to update your device to a more recent OS, then you might just be safe, Metro Online says.

Some of the Android devices that will be affected by the change include:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

And it’s not just Android devices that will be affected; later in 2025, older iPhones will be too.

From May 5, iPhones still using iOS 15.1 or earlier versions will no longer be able to access WhatsApp.

Some devices that will still use this iOS include the iPhone 5s; iPhone 6; and iPhone 6 Plus.

In light of the news regarding Androids and KitKat, some people have taken to social media to share their surprise that WhatsApp was still compatible with the server after all these years.

“Holy sh*t they were still supporting KitKat,” someone said on Reddit.

Others joked that if your device still uses KitKat, then it was probably time for an upgrade anyway.

A Redditor quipped: “If you’re running android that old, you might as well just use public Twitter posts to communicate because that phone is about as insecure as it can get.

Justin Baldoni files $250,000,000 lawsuit against New York Times over Blake Lively story

The It Ends With Us star has responded after Blake Lively filed a lawsuit of her own

It Ends With Us star Justin Baldoni has filed a $250,000,000 lawsuit against The New York Times over a story it published about his interactions with co-star Blake Lively.

The filing comes after Lively filed her own lawsuit against Baldoni on December 20, when she accused her former co-star and director of orchestrating a ‘smear campaign’ against her and allegedly causing her ‘severe emotional distress’ while they worked together on their 2024 romance-drama movie.

Lively also accused Baldoni of sexual harassment, however, Baldoni has denied all of the claims made against him.

Now, he’s been named as one of 10 plaintiffs in a new, $250 million lawsuit which was filed on New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The lawsuit accuses The New York Times of libel, false light invasion of privacy, promissory fraud and breach of implied-in-fact contract in relation to its December 21 article, headlined “‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine.”

The article featured claims about Baldoni, at one point alleging he had ‘repeatedly entered [Lively’s] makeup trailer uninvited while she was undressed, including when she was breastfeeding’.

The claim came from a June 2023 text exchange between herself and Baldoni in which Lively wrote: “I’m just pumping in my trailer if you wanna work out our lines.”

In response, Baldoni wrote: “Copy. Eating with crew and will head that way.”

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit have claimed The New York Times ‘cherry-picked’ communications and presented them ‘stripped of necessary context and deliberately spliced to mislead’.

“The Times story relied almost entirely on Lively’s unverified and self-serving narrative, lifting it nearly verbatim while disregarding an abundance of evidence that contradicted her claims and exposed her true motives,” the suit claims, alleging Lively took on a ‘strategic and manipulative’ smear campaign of her own and used false ‘sexual harassment allegations to assert unilateral control over every aspect of the production’.

The suit also hits back at a list of demands Lively claimed to have made to Baldoni while on set, alleging: “No such document was ever presented to Baldoni, the [production company] Wayfarer team, or, to their knowledge, anyone else – whether during that meeting or at any other time – and therefore, could not have been agreed to.”

Attorney Bryan Freedman, who filed the lawsuit, told Variety that The New York Times ‘cowered to the wants and whims of two powerful ‘untouchable’ Hollywood elites, disregarding journalistic practices and ethics once befitting of the revered publication by using doctored and manipulated texts and intentionally omitting texts which dispute their chosen PR narrative’.

In response to the lawsuit, The New York Times said: “The role of an independent news organization is to follow the facts where they lead. Our story was meticulously and responsibly reported. It was based on a review of thousands of pages of original documents, including the text messages and emails that we quote accurately and at length in the article.

“To date, Wayfarer Studios, Mr. Baldoni, the other subjects of the article and their representatives have not pointed to a single error. We published their full statement in response to the allegations in the article as well. We plan to vigorously defend against the lawsuit.”

In addition to her original lawsuit, lawyers for Lively have said they have now filed a federal complaint against Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios, claiming the defendents ‘have violated federal and California state law by retaliating against her for reporting sexual harassment and workplace safety concerns’.

“Now, the defendants will answer for their conduct in federal court,” Lively’s legal team said.

UNILAD has reached out to representatives for Baldoni, Lively and the New York Times for comment.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard has become a mom for the first time

Gypsy Rose Blanchard has officially become a mom, one year after she was released from prison.

The 33-year-old announced in a post on social media that she gave birth to a healthy baby girl on December 28, which marks one year to the date that she was released from prison, TMZ reports.

Gypsy and her partner, Ken Urker, have also revealed they have called their daughter Aurora Raina Urker.

Speaking to TMZ, Ken said Aurora is ‘healthy and we are so happy’.

The new dad also shared a snap of their bundle of joy in an Instagram post today (January 1) with a caption that read: “Welcoming 2025 with the greatest gift of all.”

The heartwarming image shows Ken and Gypsy cuddling Aurora, who is wearing a pink hat, in a hospital bed.

The news comes as Gypsy was released on December 28, 2023, after serving a seven-year prison sentence for her part in killing her mother, Claudine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard, in a case that captured worldwide attention.

Gypsy revealed she had spent her life in a wheelchair needlessly as a result of her mom’s suspected Munchausen syndrome by proxy – a mental illness and a form of child abuse.

Dee Dee even shaved her daughter’s head and administered medicine to convince medics and the world that the young girl, kept in a childlike state, was suffering from leukemia and muscular dystrophy.

But that all came to an end when Gypsy escaped her 48-year-old mom’s grip in 2015.

Then 24 years old, Gypsy reportedly let her internet boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, into their Missouri home with instructions to stab her mother to death.

She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and then spent almost a decade banged up behind bars before she was granted early parole.

During her time in prison, she formed a bond with Ken who had sent her a letter and in 2018, the pair became engaged.

The duo briefly split for a few years as the Hulu show, The Act, which documented Gypsy’s story, put the couple under a glaring spotlight and enormous pressure.

However, they reconciled again and in July last year, announced that they were expecting.

Gypsy said in a YouTube video that her traumatic ideal and complicated relationship with her own mom would alter her outlook on motherhood.

She said: “All the things that I wanted in a mother, I want to give to this baby.

“I just want to be a good mother to my child, I want to be everything my mother wasn’t.”

Gypsy also recently told People that she can’t take all the credit for her baby girl’s name.

“Ken came up with that,” she said of the name Aurora, adding that there’s ‘a whole backstory to it’.

She continued that some ‘think that it’s because of the Disney princess’, as Gypsy herself was made to believe she was a child when in her early 20s, and of all the frequent Disney park trips they made due to fraudulent claims her mother filed to children’s charities.

However, Gypsy said it isn’t because of any of that, and actually comes from the couple’s ‘fascination’ with the Northern lights.

Horrifying CCTV footage of New Orleans attack that killed 15 people as suspect is identified

Horrifying CCTV footage of New Orleans attack that killed 15 people as suspect is identifiedAt least 15 people were killed in New Orleans when a driver plowed his pick-up truck through a busy street in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Dozens more were injured in the horrific attack and now CCTV footage shows the horrifying moment the suspect, who has been identified as Texan Shamsud-Din Jabbar, drove his vehicle into a crowd in the Bourbon Street area.

The former US veteran, who served in Afghanistan, is believed to have had an ISIS flag located in the truck which he rented – while the FBI is investigating the attack as an ‘act of terrorism’.

The agency does not believe the 42-year-old acted alone, adding that he may not be ‘solely responsible’.

The twice-married Jabbar was killed during a gun fight with authorities.

The FBI released a statement yesterday (January 1), which read in part: “Today, at approximately 3:15 a.m. CST, an individual drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing at least 10 and injuring dozens of others.

“After hitting the crowd, he exited the vehicle and fired upon local law enforcement. Law enforcement returned fire, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a local hospital.

“The subject has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. He was driving a Ford pickup truck, which appears to have been rented, and we are working to confirm how the subject came into possession of the vehicle.”

It continued: “An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.

“Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter.

“The FBI’s special agent bomb technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe.

“The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism. We are aggressively running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the subject.”

Meanwhile, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick explained that Jabbar managed to access the sidewalk by driving around barricades and police vehicles.

“We had a car there, we had barriers there, we had officers there, and he still got around,” Kirkpatrick said, per CBS News.

A statement from President Joe Biden, in part, said: “I am grateful for the brave and swift response of local law enforcement in preventing even greater death and injury.

“I have directed my team to ensure every resource is available as federal, state, and local law enforcement work assiduously to get to the bottom of what happened as quickly as possible and to ensure that there is no remaining threat of any kind.

“I will continue to receive updates throughout the day, and I will have more to say as we have further information to share.

MrBeast and Thea Booysen first met in 202

Popular YouTube star MrBeast has announced that he’s engaged to girlfriend Thea Booysen.

MrBeast, 26, popped the question on Christmas Day, surrounded by the pair’s nearest and dearest who were in on the surprise.

Booysen, 27, told People: “My family flew out from South Africa for Christmas and we were going to do Christmas in our house so both families were here. We were opening presents, and then for the very last present he asked me to close my eyes because it was a surprise.”

“I intentionally dropped a large box to make noise before presenting the real gift – with the ring inside – to her. And then I went down on a knee and proposed,” MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, added.

“I was trying to think of the best way to catch her off guard so it would be a surprise. Thea is really close to her family, so I wanted to make sure that they were included in this momentous occasion. Christmas worked out great because they were in town from the other side of the world.”

The pair first crossed paths back in 2022 when he was paying a visit to her home country of South Africa and met the fellow gamer at the dinner party of a mutual friend that Booysen was also invited to.

MrBeast spoke to People about the moment he first met his now fiancée, and he recalled the pair forming a close bond from the off.

He said: “When we were first introduced, it came through right away how brilliant Thea is. She has such a range of knowledge and can go deep on lots of topics. She told me about her work as an author and how passionate she is about her hobbies – we vibed instantly. I kept thinking she is really smart and beautiful. I knew within the first few minutes of meeting that I wanted the chance to date her. Thankfully, she also felt a strong connection.”

Booysen also revealed what it was like meeting the social media star for the first time.

“When I met him, I was quite surprised how down-to-earth he was, and also how intelligent he was,” she said.

“I thought YouTubers were just sort of a persona, but when I met him, I was quite surprised to see that he’s actually a nice guy. He wasn’t sitting there with an ego.”

Speaking about their wedding plans, the 27-year-old added: “We’re thinking of doing it somewhere on an island where we’re far away from just about everybody.

“We’re not going to try and have a big, extravagant wedding. It’s going to be nice, but it’s certainly going to be intimate [with] close family and friends.”

After earning herself a PhD from Oxford University, she happens to be very clued in on the science of persuasive communication.

She said: “I’m always analysing, it’s not just words, it’s the tone, it’s body language, it’s also what’s not being said, what’s not being done and actions over time, how they match with the words. There’s all of this stuff around it that I notice that I don’t think a lot of people pay attention to.”

The NELK Boys sparked mixed responses after giving vapes and alcohol to members of the isolated community

YouTubers the NELK Boys have come under fire after releasing a video in which they visited an ‘uncontacted tribe’ and introduced them to vapes.

The content creators, made up of Kyle Forgeard, Aaron ‘Steiny’ Steinberg and Salim Sirur, posted their video titled ‘NELK Visits a Dangerous Uncontacted Tribe!’ towards the end of December, and have so far racked up more than 4.5 million views.

The video features clips of the NELK Boys encountering members of the isolated community as they teamed up with adventurer Forrest Galante, who warned the tribe might view the group as a ‘war party’.

The NELK Boys arrived on a Pacific island near Fiji to begin their adventure, and quickly appeared to face conflict as members of the community rushed out to their boat holding bows and arrows.

The YouTubers were ultimately given permission to enter the community by its chief, and they experienced the group’s way of life by going hunting and trying some of their food.

Towards the end of the video, the group handed over a bottle of bourbon for the chief to try, with clips showing other members of community also taking a swig from the bottle. The NELK Boys also handed over packs of cigarettes, before saying: “Watch if they find out about vapes.”

The creators then proceeded to offer a cherry apple vape pen to the community, with one saying: “He’s about to get hooked on them.”

As well as showing the tribe members how to blow clouds from the vapes, the NELK Boys encouraged them to try out snus; is a smokeless, moist tobacco product which can deliver nicotine without smoking.

After the creators shared the video, they were hit with backlash from viewers who criticized the creators for giving the tribe substances that they may never have tried before.

Viewers accused the group of ‘polluting their authenticity’ and described the scene as ‘sickening’ after a clip from the YouTube video was shared on Twitter.

“This is messed-up,” one person wrote, as another added: “That was a trashy move.

“Tribal communities are surprisingly healthy and some of them live very long lives. Bringing toxic products to them doesn’t help them.”

“You’re corrupting the tribe,” wrote a third.

However, other viewers have described the video as one of their ‘favorites’ from the creators, while some have claimed the video looks ‘staged’.

Avicii’s close friend shares heartbreaking regret in new Netflix documentary released today

The new documentary features never-before-seen footage

Using home videos and a huge private archive, Avicii – I’m Tim has landed on Netflix today (31 December).

And with interviews from those close to him, a friend of the Swedish music star has shared his heartbreaking regret.

Starting off sharing his remixes at the age of 16, Avicii (real name Tim Bergling) truly broke through in 2011 with his hit ‘Levels’.

This was followed by his first album True which, of course, featured the major smash song, ‘Wake Me Up’. He went on to have a list of popular releases before retiring from touring in 2016, after years of stress and poor mental health.

Bergling then died by suicide in 2018, while on holiday in Oman.

Netflix’s new documentary looks at his ‘winding journey’ through live from his ‘very first breath at the maternity ward in Stockholm in 1989 to the tragic end’.

It adds: “This is a film where Tim himself is the narrator and he shares his inner self in a way we haven’t heard before.”

During the doc, Bergling’s friends and family open up about his death as his close friend Jesse Waits says: “I don’t think anybody really know why or what happened, nobody really knows what was going through his mind, everybody can speculate.

“He seemed good to everybody I talked to that were around him, he was in a good place. It’s hard to accept.”

Waits continued to reveal his regrets over the music talent’s death as he wishes he’d been there and been able to help him during that tragic time.

“I know this is something that is inevitable, but if I was there I could have fixed it,” he said.

“Whatever he was going through, I’d be like, ‘F**king shut the f**k up, f**king put your shoes on, and let’s go out f**king outside for a walk.

“I’m sure everybody feels that they could have changed something, especially his family.”

The documentary is narrated by Bergling himself with director Henrik Burman explaining to Billboard: “When I determined that he’d be the one who’d narrate this story, I thought that maybe it was how I could be close to him. Maybe that’s how I can meet him.”

With the blessing of the star’s parents, Burman had full access to the Avicii archives, finding hours of interviews with the record producer from throughout his career.

“There were moments in these interviews where he’d say, ‘This really describes me as a person, so if there’s ever a documentary made about me, you should use this to tell the story,’” Burman added.

The actor spoke out about it

Franco was accused by five young actors of sexual misconduct or exploitative behaviour.

All five were either students of his acting school, or mentees of Franco.

This resulted in Franco being sued by two students, Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal, who attended Franco’s Studio 4 acting school which has since been shut down.

The pair settled with Franco out of court for £1.7 million.

The actor was also accused of ‘forcing’ a former girlfriend to perform oral sex on him in a car.

Following the allegations made against him, Franco stayed silent in the media, leading attention to turn to others close to him.

His brother Dave has never commented on the controversy to either support or decry him. However, Dave’s wife Alison Brie was asked about the matter on a red carpet.

Speaking to E! news, Brie said in 2018: “I think that above all what we’ve always said is that it remains vital that anyone who feels victimized should and does have the right to speak out and come forward.

“I obviously support my family, and not everything that’s been reported is fully accurate, so I think we’re waiting to get all the information.

“But of course, now is the time for listening, and that’s what we’re all trying to do.”

Seth Rogen also spoke in an interview with the Sunday Times in which he said he would not be working with James Franco moving forward.

Following this, Franco appeared on a podcast in 2021 on SiriusXM to discuss the allegations and resulting fallout.

When asked about Rogen’s comments, Franco said they were ‘hurtful in context’, but went on to say: “He had to answer for me ‘cause I was silent.

“He had to answer for me, and that’s why I am doing this interview. I don’t want Seth or my brother to have to answer for me anymore.”

Rogen’s full comments regarding the allegations were: “What I can say is that I despise abuse and harassment.

“I would never cover or conceal the actions of someone doing it, or knowingly put someone in a situation where they were around someone like that.

“The truth is that I have not and I do not plan to [work with Franco] right now.”

When asked in the SiriusXM podcast why he stayed silent for so long on the allegations, Franco said it was because he needed ‘to listen’ to ‘people that were upset with’ him.

Sources close to the former couple have spoken out after they reached a divorce settlement

A source close to Angelina Jolie has claimed the actor is hopeful Brad Pitt will stop ‘attacking’ her now they have reached a settlement in their years-long divorce proceedings.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott J. Nord approved the settlement on December 31, 2024, one day after both Jolie and Pitt signed off on it and more than eight years after Jolie first filed for divorce in 2016.

The couple had been dating for 12 years and married for two when they split, with Jolie citing ‘irreconcilable differences’. In the settlement, the couple have given up the right to any future spousal financial support, the Associated Press reports.

Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, has said she is ‘exhausted’ from the proceedings, which dragged on due to custody battles, disputes over Jolie’s stake in a French winery, and claims made about a 2016 incident on board a private jet.

He added that she is now ‘relieved this one part is over’.

With the settlement reached, a source close to Jolie spoke to PEOPLE about the actor’s hopes to move forward.

They claimed: “Brad has successfully used his power and his privilege to cover up his conduct at his family’s expense, to punish Angelina for leaving, and even to attempt to paint her as the reason why his relationship is so challenging with the children.

“Angelina hopes the finalization of their divorce will enable him to move on, stop attacking her, and instead help heal their family.”

However, a source close to Pitt hit back by telling the publisher that Jolie has been involved in ‘one-sided attacks for the past eight years’.

The source claimed these ‘attacks’ included a ‘never-ending distortion of facts and projecting their own behavior onto others, causing tremendous collateral damage to those in and around the family’.

A source close to Pitt also told PEOPLE that the battle over the French winery – in which Jolie was accused of breaching an agreement when she sold her half – was a ‘perfect example’ of one of Jolie’s ‘attacks’.

“Brad built an extraordinary, increasingly valuable business and she chose to deliberately disregard their agreement, and instead of completing negotiations for him to buy her out and keeping Miraval fully in the family and ending the battles, she instead chose to sell to a total stranger not aligned with the company’s vision so she could take the money for herself and punish him,” the source claimed.
