Jordan LoNigro revealed how going alcohol-free for a month impacted him

If you’re someone who is considering whether to jump on the Dry Jan bandwagon, this bloke might help you decide whether it’s worth the hype.

Millions of people take part in the annual challenge to go alcohol-free for the first month of the year to have a bit of a detox after a booze-fuelled festive season.

Let’s have it right, a lot of us have drank enough throughout December to last us an entire year – so the idea of going 31 days without liquor is quite enticing.

Experts insist you will notice a number of health benefits if you take part in Dry January, however, some people remain unconvinced by the point of it.

A few Brits think it’s counterproductive to cut out alcohol for just one month while continuing to get hammered for the other 11. And they have a point – but the purpose of the campaign which was first launched by Alcohol Change UK is to encourage people to simply reconsider their relationship with booze.

It prompts us to take stock of how much alcohol we are drinking and whether we might be teetering into dangerous territory with our drinking habits.

But you don’t just have to take my word for it, as this man revealed what results he had after putting himself on a booze ban for 30 days.

YouTuber Jordan LoNigro decided to document his challenge and share his results online in the hopes of inspiring others to take a leaf out of his book too.

In a video originally shared in May 2019, he explained that he was motivated to ditch drunken nights out after a booze-heavy few weeks, which resulted in some pretty grim hangovers.

The photographer and videographer, based in South Carolina, then revealed what changes he had noticed after not consuming any alcohol for more than four weeks, as well as the biggest realisation he had.

He excitedly announced that he had lost 10 pounds ‘just by simply cutting out alcohol for a month and eating a little bit healthier’.

“So that’s pretty awesome,” Jordan said. “I feel like I have a bit more energy, I feel a lot less sluggish than I usually do. I’ve been more creative.

“I haven’t been waking up with hangovers on the weekends, so I’ve been using my time to my advantage and just being more all-around productive, so that’s been great as well. And lastly, I saved money.”

The content creator explained that even if you are just grabbing one beer with a meal, these small purchases add up over the course of a month.

However, Jordan admitted it wasn’t all smooth sailing, even if the 30 day challenge did leave him feeling better mentally and physically.

“Now let’s talk about some cons – or to put it better, some realisations I’ve had doing this challenge,” he continued. “My relationship with alcohol…it was a bit more challenging than I thought it was gonna be.

“The area I live in, there’s just so many things that involve drinking, so many activities that involve drinking. When I cut that out, it was like, wow.”

He explained that he lost weight, had more energy and saved money (YouTube/@jordanlonigro)

The YouTuber explained it dawned on him that he would have probably drank on numerous occasions ‘without even thinking about it’, rather than for a special event – prompting him to realise the extent of his relationship with drinking.

“Moving forward, I’m just going to be a little bit more aware of when I drink and how much I am drinking,” Jordan went on, before discussing the ‘most challenging’ aspect he faced while giving up booze further.

He told how his social life had taken a hit as he realised that a lot of activities involve drinking, but when your teetotal, ‘you don’t want to go put yourself in those environments’.

“So you just stay at home and chill,” he said. “And you don’t really hang out with people too much.”

He explained the cold weather also played a part in this, as he couldn’t preoccupy himself by heading outdoors.

As well as prompting him to overhaul his relationship with alcohol, Jordan says the challenge gave him new-found admiration for those who don’t drink.

“I just did this challenge for 30 days, but there’s a lot of people out there even people that are very close to me that live a sober lifestyle,” he added.

“That would be very hard to do.You would really have to reformat your whole life, really be aware of your surroundings and that would be very challenging – so to anyone out there that lives that kind of lifestyle, respect to you.”

David Humplett has been in hospital for the Christmas and New Year period

The terrifying moment an influencer live-streamed himself being bitten by a highly poisonous snake has gone viral.

Social media influencer David Humplett boasts millions of followers on the likes of Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. And on December 18, many of his fans watched on in horror as he was bitten by a diamondback rattlesnake in Florida, before making a quick trip to ICU as his life hanged in the balance.

Humplett was on the lookout for snakes as he ventured around Shired Island in Dixie County.

But it was an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake that came across the social media influencer, and launched a vicious attack on him.

Moments after the poisonous snake sunk its fangs into his leg, Humplett said: “Welp, I’m cooked. Alright, that right there is a fantastic Eastern diamondback Rattlesnake that I just got bit in the leg by when I was peeling bark.”

WCJB reports the influencer was peeling bark around a tree to help find another type of snake when he frightened the snake.

“And then I just felt, out of nowhere, this intense pain, right in my leg. Honestly, it felt like an alligator,” Humphlett said, as per WCJB.

Humplett was rushed to hospital after the incident as he feared for his life.

“My reaction was just like dang it, this is really bad,” he recalled. “I might lose my leg. It was petty scary because my whole body went numb head to toe.”

Humplett was given 88 vials of anti-venom as the bite left his leg swelling to ungodly sizes, and he remains in the hospital’s intensive care unit as we enter the new year.

Emma Rynear, Humphlett’s wife, has also been speaking to the press following her partner’s terrible ordeal.

“Internally, I’m panicking but externally, I’m reassuring him, ‘You’re going to be fine’,” she told WCJB. “My team here at work helped me run down to the emergency room to be right there as the helicopter landed.”

Humplett continued: “That’s just the God we serve. He turns things that seem crappy and makes them really beautiful.”

Humplett will no doubt he counting his lucky stars following the incident, especially because he described the rattlesnake as ‘the worst snake you can be bit by in Florida’.

His leg, which remains purple, felt like it was going to explode, the social media star added. He has also set up a ‘recovery fund’ on GoFundMe to go towards medical bills and help for his family.

Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes are North America’s longest and heaviest venomous snake, and can average lengths of three-six feet long, as per Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute. Their bites can be fatal to humans, so it’s safe to say Humplett had one hell of a lucky escape.

The chessboard-like pattern on the water might be interesting to look at, but it could leave you in serious trouble

Although the majority of us are well versed in the basics of staying safe in the water, not a lot of people are aware of the dangers of this bizarre weather phenomenon.

Square waves might be a sight to behold, but they can also be deadly if you find yourself caught up in them.

Although most of us imagine ocean waves calmly rolling into shore in straight lines, they can present themselves in much more unpredictable forms too.

Even the most experienced swimmers could end up in peril if they stay in the water in certain conditions – but you seriously need to skedaddle if you see a chessboard-like pattern on the water.

Oceanographers explain that when two particularly strong weather patterns and opposing swells collide, they can force waves to form at different angles, creating the ‘square’ design.

It might be interesting to look at, but you need to head for dry land ASAP if you spot this happening while you are having a dip in the sea.

These dangerous waves can form within a matter of minutes and reach heights of up to 10ft, but can disappear just as fast as they rock up.

According to Surfer Today, this ocean phenomenon is typically associated with strong and localised rip tides, which is a strong offshore current that is caused when the tide pulls water along the beach.

These can easily overpower swimmers and you could be dragged off by the waves and below the surface if you’re paddling in a section of square waves.

They can even get the better of boats.

Square waves caused a huge percentage of shipwrecks between 1995 and 1999, the European Space Agency (ESA) said.

These cross swells are really, really difficult to swim out of – so if you want to avoid getting sucked into a riptide, you need to evacuate the ocean immediately as soon as you spot them.

But if you do find yourself in this situation, experts have some advice which could save your life.

Mathew Giachetti, of the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), previously told Islands.com: “If caught in a square wave, the most important thing to do is get out of the water immediately, as they are extremely dangerous.

“Stay calm, try to float on your back, and swim parallel to the shore to escape the wave’s force. Then carefully make your way back to land as soon as possible; if you can’t reach the shore quickly, signal for help.”

Square waves often occur along coastal areas, such as the French island of Île de Ré, and thousands of tourists flock there to see the phenomenon with their own eyes.

They’ve also been known to turn up in the South Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean as well as other spots, so keep an eye out for them no matter where you are in the world.

The Simpsons ‘predictions for 2025’ are more extremely bad news for the world

The TV show has long been associated with foreseeing some of the biggest global news

ICYMI, The Simpsons has ‘predicted’ a fair few world events over the years.

The TV show has long been associated with seemingly foreseeing some of the biggest global news, including the Hawk Tuah girl, a major music collab, the UK’s cost of living crisis and the US 2024 election map.

Back in 2000, the season 11 episode ‘Bart to the Future’ aired and eerily referenced Trump’s rise to power as the 45th US president.

Fans have always been completely baffled over how the show does it, but turns out there could be some predictions on the way for 2025 – and it’s not looking like good news.

A global apocalypse

Hubpages reminds us that in one episode of The Simpsons, ‘Thank God It’s Doomsday’, Marge decides to give the kids a haircut, but Bart and Lisa want to go to a new, cooler hair salon in the mall.

Homer takes the kids there anyway, despite Marge objecting, but it goes horribly wrong when chaos ensues at the salon and the pair are left with half-shaved heads.

Hiding from some of their classmates, Bart, Lisa and Homer run inside a movie theater where they end up watching a film about the Rapture.

After the movie, Homer is frightened and believes the Rapture is on its way. He begins saying that ‘stars are falling from the sky’ and ‘the end is near’.

Homer predicts an apocalypse (FOX)

While people believe Homer at first, the apocalypse never arrives and he is outcast, but he soon realises he actually got the date wrong and the apocalypse is still set to happen.

Moments later, he is floating in heaven where he pleads with God to save his family. After some negotiating, God agrees to turn back time and Homer awakens from his ‘dream’ before reuniting with his loved ones

While it might sound a little far-fetched, fans believe the themes of time travel and apocalypse could be a prediction for 2025.

World War 3

With global conflicts heightening in 2024, it’s unsurprising that people have been taking a World War 3 prediction seriously.

Since The Simpsons aired, there’s been a few references to a potential World War 3. In one 1987 short, Homer is convinced that WW3 has started and insists the family rush to a homemade shelter in the garden.

Meanwhile, a separate scene from ‘Lisa’s Wedding’ sees Lisa’s British fiancè, Hugh Parkfield, visit Moe’s Tavern with Homer and Bart in the future.

Moe acknowledges that Hugh is British and tells him that they ‘saved their a** in WW2’, to which Hugh responds: “Well, we saved your a**e in WW3.”

Eerily, Moe simply says: “That’s true.”

“Since many of The Simpsons’ predictions have come true, will this prediction about World War 3 also come true?” one person asked on Twitter.

Zombie Apocalypse

An episode released in 2009 titled ‘Treehouse of Horror XX’ sees the world infected by a virus that transforms humans into zombies.

Bart seems to be the only person immune to the virus, so the family rush to reach a safe zone to protect him. But in a bizarre twist, the residents of Springfield believe eating Bart could make them immune to the zombie disease.

In an even more bonkers conclusion to the episode, Bart manages to ‘vaccinate’ the population by contaminating their food before they eat it.

Most of it is totally unrealistic, of course, but it does have themes we’ve seen before during Covid times.

Social media users think they could be on to something, with one writing on TikTok: “This is what i have been asking myself all these years after watching zombie movies, thinking who brought the idea? And I knew it that one day it will come into reality.”

Turns out it was also predicted in 2024, however, with another writing in 2023: “The Simpsons has ‘predicted’ a zombie apocalypse in 2024.

Squid Game actor forced to apologise after sharing 'adult' version of Netflix series

Squid Game season 2 arrived on Netflix on December 26

Squid Game’s Park Sung-hoon has been forced to apologise after sharing an ‘adult’ version of the Netflix series.

The second season of the incredibly popular Netflix show arrived on the streaming platform on Boxing Day (26 December).

As well as Lee Jung-jae returning to the role of Gi-hun, who is hellbent on destroying the Squid Games once and for all, the new series features some new contestants. Amongst the new additions to the show, which include former K-pop musicians, T.O.P from BigBang, ZE:A’s Yim Si-wan, and Iz*One’s Jo Yuri, is Park, who plays Hyun-Ju in the show.

Hyun-Ju is a transgender woman and former Marine, who enters the Squid Games to pay for gender-affirming surgery.

However, the actor has faced a considerable amount of criticism after sharing an explicit image from a porn parody of Squid Game on his social media.

On his Instagram Stories, Park shared the DVD cover of a Japanese porn film called ‘Squirt Game’ – however, it was swiftly deleted.

In South Korea, distribution of pornographic material is a felony and can result in a one-year prison sentence and a fine.

Some fans initially believed that his account had been hacked, according to Pink News, however, the timing supposedly accentuated the criticism as Korea JoongAng reports that it was apparently posted as the country entered in a seven-day mourning period for the Jeju Air plane crash which occurred on Sunday (29 December).

Some took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the situation, with a few claiming he should be removed from his upcoming TV series, The Tyrant’s Chef, Dexerto reports.

Park’s representative agency, BH Entertainment, has since released a statement to issue an apology.

They wrote: “Actor Park accidentally posted the image, which he received in a direct message, by mistakenly pressing the wrong button.

“The actor himself was also very shocked. He is deeply sorry for making such a mistake in these circumstances and promises to be especially careful to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

Park’s casting as a transgender woman also faced some backlash, as many social media users criticised the decision since the actor is a cisgender man.

However, Squid Games’ creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, said to TV Guide that he’d anticipated this ‘discussion’ when creating the character, adding: “In the beginning we were doing our research, and I was thinking of doing an authentic casting of a trans actor.

“When we researched in Korea, there are close to no actors [who] are openly trans, let alone openly gay, because unfortunately in Korean society the LGBTQ+ community is still marginalised and more neglected, which is heart-breaking.”

Netflix also confirmed that they had worked with trans and LGBTQ+ consultants when creating the second season, NBC News reports.

LADbible has contacted Park’s representatives and Netflix for comment.

Maggie Gleason, who was born deaf, heard for the first time aged 14

Here’s the incredible moment a deaf girl heard for the first time thanks to the word of an impressive brain implant.

Maggie Gleason’s story went viral way back in 2015 as medical experts filmed her hearing sounds for the first time.

It’s the most heartwarming clip you’ll watch to kick off 2025, and people on the internet who have can certainly confirm that.

Maggie underwent major surgery as a teen that saw an auditory brainstem implant placed on the lower part of her brain.

Doctors recorded her reaction after they turned on the implant at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland, and the footage showed Maggie grinning as she heard for the first time.

“Maggie, can you hear me?”, her father Frank asked.

“You can hear my voice? What about your sister?”, Maggie’s mother Joanna then said.

Maggie then nodded and uttered a ‘yes’, as the whole room burst out into tears at the extremely emotional moment.

University Hospitals uploaded the clip to YouTube, where it quickly went viral with close to three million views.

“Maggie Gleason, 14, who was born deaf, heard sound for the first time ever when hearing specialists at UH Cleveland Medical Center turned on an innovative electronic device called an auditory brainstem implant (ABI),” a description to the YouTube video read.

Many flocked to the comments section of the video, and it’s safe to say there’s not a dry eye in the house.

“What an inspirational family! I’m happy that this technology has reached Maggie; may it help her continue to make great strides in her life. Bravo!”, one person wrote.

A second added: “WOOOO!! Go humans and science!!!! This is so amazing….just wow.”

Many asked how Maggie was able to understand what doctors and her nearest and dearest were saying, so the University Hospitals account took to the comments section to further explain the situation.

Maggie heard for the first time (YouTube/UniversityHospitals)

They said: “So Maggie does not yet understand words as we do. She currently communicates using a combination of American Sign Language (ASL) and lip-reading cues, now combined with auditory cues. She is working with a speech-language pathologist toward the goal of understanding words using the auditory cues. Think of it like learning a foreign language; the auditory sounds of the foreign words are being heard, but the brain must be trained how to make sense of the sounds. This will take time.”

The auditory brainstem implant, an electric device, is placed in a spot on the head where the spinal cord and lower part of the brain meet.

Horrifying CCTV footage of New Orleans attack that killed 15 people as suspect is identified

The former US military veteran, who served in Afghanistan, killed 15 people and injured dozens more as he plowed through a busy street

At least 15 people were killed in New Orleans when a driver plowed his pickup truck through a busy street in the early hours of New Years Day.

Dozens more were injured in the horrific attack and now CCTV footage shows the horrifying moment the suspect, who has been identified as Texan Shamsud-Din Jabbar, rammed his car through the busy street.

The former US veteran, who served in Afghanistan, is believed to have tied an ISIS flag to the back of his truck which he rented – while the FBI is investigating the attack as an ‘act of terrorism’.

The agency does not believe the 42-year-old acted alone, adding that he may not be ‘solely responsible’.

The twice-married Jabbar was killed during a gun fight with authorities and is understood to have created a series of recordings of him which state that he had joined ISIS, FBI officials briefed on the investigation stated.

The FBI released a statement yesterday (January 1), which read in part: “Today, at approximately 3:15 a.m. CST, an individual drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing at least 10 and injuring dozens of others.

“After hitting the crowd, he exited the vehicle and fired upon local law enforcement. Law enforcement returned fire, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a local hospital.

“The subject has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. He was driving a Ford pickup truck, which appears to have been rented, and we are working to confirm how the subject came into possession of the vehicle.”

It continued: “An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.

“Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter.

“The FBI’s special agent bomb technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe.

“The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism. We are aggressively running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the subject.”

Meanwhile New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, explained that Jabbar managed to access the sidewalk by driving around barricades and police vehicles.

Nail Matrix

Your nail matrix is where your fingernails or toenails form. A healthy nail matrix is essential for healthy nails. A variety of conditions and injuries can damage your nail matrix. But in many cases, your nail matrix will heal with proper care.

Overview

A diagram of a finger showing the nail matrix and parts of the finger nail.
The nail matrix is where your fingernails form. You can’t see most of your nail matrix.

What is a nail matrix?

Your nail matrix is where your fingernails and toenails form. Your nail matrix has two parts: the germinal matrix and the sterile matrix.

Function

What does my nail matrix do?

Your nail matrix creates new cells that become your fingernails or toenails. About 90% of your nail growth comes from your germinal matrix. Your sterile matrix is responsible for the remaining 10% of cells that make up your fingernails and toenails, but is more important in keeping your nail attached to the underlying skin.

What happens if my nail matrix is damaged?

Injuries and certain health conditions can damage your nail matrix and interfere with nail growth. Minor damage to your nail matrix can temporarily change your nail’s appearance. You might notice:

  • A bruise.
  • Ridges.
  • Dents.
  • A change in how your nail feels to the touch.

A severe injury could cause your nail to fall off. Once your nail matrix heals, your nail will usually start to grow again. It may take several weeks before you see your new nail appear. In cases of severe nail matrix damage, some or all of your nail may not grow back.

Anatomy

Where is my nail matrix located?

Your nail’s germinal matrix is under the base of your nail, and the sterile matrix lies underneath your nail. You can’t see most of your nail matrix. The lunula (white crescent shape at the base of your nail) is the only visible part of your nail matrix. But some people don’t have visible lunulas, and that’s normal, too.

The nail matrix and lunula are part of your nail’s overall structure, which also includes your:

  • Cuticle (white or transparent skin at the base of your nail).
  • Lateral nail fold (skin that’s on either side of your nail).
  • Nail plate (your nail itself).
  • Nail bed (area under your nail plate).
  • Proximal nail fold (skin at the base of your nail below your cuticle).

What is my nail matrix made of?

Your nail matrix is made of special cells whose main job is to make new fingernails or toenails. Each nail matrix produces 196 layers of cells that combine to make each of your fingernails and toenails. Each nail matrix is constantly making new nail cells, unlike your hair follicles, which go through periods of rest.

Conditions and Disorders

What health conditions can affect my nail matrix?

Some health conditions and other factors can affect your nail matrix, including:

  • Fungal infection: Certain types of fungus (mold) can infect your nails, usually your toenails. Toenail fungus may appear as thick, yellow, cracked or cloudy nails.
  • Illnesses: A serious health event like a heart attack or an illness like COVID-19 or pneumonia can interrupt new nail growth and cause Beau’s lines (horizontal ridges in your nails).
  • Injuries: Pinching or crushing your finger or dropping something heavy on your toe can injure your nail matrix. After a nail matrix injury, you may have bruising, ridges or discoloration. Your nail may fall off. Some injuries to your fingernails or toenails can cause a nail infection.
  • Medications: Chemotherapy and other medications can temporarily affect your nail matrix, causing Beau’s lines or slow nail growth. Medications may also cause Mees’ lines (white bands across your nails) and nail color changes. Usually, these changes go away after you finish the medication.
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD): Peripheral artery disease causes less blood flow to your legs and feet. This reduced blood flow affects your nail matrix and can make nail growth slower.

Additionally, certain skin conditions and diseases can affect your nail matrix, such as:

  • Eczema: Severe eczema can affect your nail matrix and temporarily interfere with nail growth. You might see Beau’s lines, pitting (small, pinhole-like dots) and texture or color changes.
  • Psoriasis: Up to 80% of people with psoriasis develop nail psoriasis. Nail psoriasis can cause changes to your nails, including white lines, pitting and crumbling.
  • Subungual melanoma: Nail matrix melanoma, also called subungual melanoma, is a type of skin cancer that affects your nail matrix. Brown or black discoloration on your nail is the most common sign. Seek medical care if you see any color changes in a single nail.

What are common signs of nail matrix problems?

Any change to the appearance or texture of one or more of your nails could be a sign of a nail matrix problem. If you have nail matrix damage or a condition affecting your nail matrix, your nails may have:

  • Dents (large or small).
  • Horizontal ridges or lines.
  • Pain or soreness.
  • Splits or cracks.
  • Spots or streaks of color.
  • Texture changes, such as becoming thicker or crumbly.

It can be difficult to tell the difference between a harmless nail change and one that requires treatment. If you notice any change to your fingernails or toenails, see a healthcare provider. They can determine the cause and recommend treatment, if needed.

How do I know if my nail matrix is damaged?

Not all nail changes mean your nail matrix is damaged. Some nail problems affect the nail bed, nail plate or nail folds, and not your nail matrix.

Your healthcare provider can tell you whether it’s a nail matrix problem or some other issue. Let your provider know if you notice any nail changes, from a small spot of color to lines or ridges.

How are nail matrix problems treated?

Treatment for a nail matrix condition depends on the cause. For example, your provider may recommend:

  • Medication: Prescription antifungal pills are the typical treatment for nail fungus. If you have nail psoriasis, certain medications can help you manage the condition. These may include pills, injections or topical treatments, depending on your needs.
  • Relieving nail injuries: If you have a bruise under your nail, you may benefit from a procedure that drains the trapped blood. This procedure, called nail trephination, provides pain relief and helps your new nail grow in correctly. Providers must perform this procedure within 48 hours of the injury, before your blood clots.
  • Surgery: Subungual melanoma needs to be removed with surgery. Your provider may take a biopsy (sample of tissue) to get a diagnosis. If the biopsy shows melanoma, your provider will remove the affected area in your nail matrix and under your nail. If the cancer has spread, you may need other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation.

Care

How should I care for my nail matrix?

Accidents happen, so you can’t always prevent a nail matrix injury. But you can help prevent problems with your nail matrix if you:

  • Cut your nails properly: Trim toenails straight across to help prevent ingrown toenails. Trim fingernails with a slight curve at the edges, and don’t cut them too short. Avoid manipulation of the cuticle, either at home or at a nail salon.
  • Manage health conditions: If you have a condition that could affect your nails, such as psoriasis, see your provider regularly to manage the condition.
  • Minimize foot fungus risk: Don’t go barefoot in public bathrooms or locker rooms, where foot fungi commonly thrive. Change out of wet shoes and socks as soon as you can.
  • Protect your hands: If you work with tools or machinery, be familiar with “pinch points” that could injure your fingers or hands. Wear gloves if your employer advises it and if you work with chemicals.
  • Seek treatment for nail changes or injuries: If your nail has color changes, pitting, ridges, lines or texture changes, see a provider.
  • Wear proper footwear: If you play sports, wear the correct shoes for your sport and ensure they’re the right size. Replace shoes when they become worn or hurt your feet. Avoid wearing shoes that are too tight. If you work with heavy objects or in construction, wear steel-toe boots to protect your toes.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Your nail matrix is the “factory” where your body makes new fingernails and toenails. Certain injuries and illnesses can damage your nail matrix and affect how your nails look or grow. But with the right treatment, you can often see healthy nails grow again. Even if your nail falls off, it usually grows back with proper medical care.

It’s rare for your nail matrix to be permanently damaged, preventing your nail from growing back. But if this happens, ask your provider if you should protect your finger or toe during physical activity. Over time, you’ll likely get used to your nail being gone. Remember that you can still live a full, active life without a fingernail or toenail.

Ear wax

Wax can build up and block the ear canal. Wax blockage is one of the most common causes of hearing loss.

Wax blockage in the ear

Causes

Ear wax protects the ear by:

  • Trapping and preventing dust, bacteria, and other germs and small objects from entering and damaging the ear
  • Protecting the delicate skin of the ear canal from getting irritated when water is in the canal

In some people, the glands produce more wax than can be easily removed from the ear. This extra wax may harden in the ear canal and block the ear, causing an impaction. When you try to clean the ear, you may instead push wax deeper and block the ear canal. For this reason, health care providers recommend against trying to reach into your own ear to clean it.

Symptoms

Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Earache
  • Fullness in the ear or a sensation that the ear is plugged
  • Noises in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Partial hearing loss, which may get worse

Treatment

Most cases of ear wax blockage can be treated at home. The following remedies can be used to soften wax in the ear:

  • Baby oil
  • Commercial ear drops
  • Glycerin
  • Mineral oil
  • Water

Another method is to wash out the wax.

  • Use body-temperature water (cooler water may cause brief but severe dizziness or vertigo).
  • Hold your head upright and straighten the ear canal by holding the outside ear and gently pulling upward.
  • Use a syringe (you can buy one at the store) to gently direct a small stream of water against the ear canal wall next to the wax plug.
  • Tip your head to allow the water to drain. You may need to repeat irrigation several times.

Ask your provider before doing it on your own.

To avoid damaging your ear or causing an infection:

  • Never irrigate or use drops to soften the wax in the ear if the eardrum may have a hole in it or you have had recent ear surgery.
  • Do not irrigate the ear with a jet irrigator designed for cleaning teeth.

After the wax is removed, dry the ear thoroughly. You may use a few drops of alcohol in the ear or a hair dryer set on low to help dry the ear.

You may clean the outer ear canal by using a cloth or paper tissue wrapped around your finger. Mineral oil can be used to moisturize the ear and prevent the wax from drying.

Do not clean your ears too often or too hard. Ear wax also helps protect your ears. Never try to clean the ear by putting any object, such as a cotton swab, into the ear canal.

If you cannot remove the wax plug or you have discomfort, consult your provider, who may remove the wax by:

  • Repeating the irrigation attempts
  • Suctioning the ear canal
  • Using a small device called a curette
  • Using a microscope to help

Outlook (Prognosis)

The ear may become blocked with wax again in the future. Hearing loss is often temporary. In most cases, hearing returns completely after the blockage is removed. Hearing aid users should have their ear canal checked for excess wax every 3 to 6 months.

Rarely, trying to remove ear wax may cause an infection in the ear canal. This can also damage the eardrum.

When to Contact a Medical Professional

See your provider if your ears are blocked with wax and you are unable to remove the wax.

Also contact your provider if you have an ear wax blockage and you develop new symptoms, such as:

  • Drainage from the ear
  • Ear pain
  • Fever
  • Hearing loss that continues after you clean the wax

American DJ Diplo made an appearance on the CNN New Year’s Eve live show

DJ Diplo had a bizarre moment during a live New Years Eve interview, where he openly admitting to ‘tripping on LSD’.

The American music producer is best known for hits such as ‘Lean On’ and ‘Cold Water’ back in the 2010s, though the 46-year-old has now made news headlines for a bizarre reason.

Diplo, who is also the lead member of electronic music group Major Lazer, made an appearance on CNN’s New Year’s Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen – because who wouldn’t want a DJ to help welcome 2025?

The artist, real name Thomas Pentz, was a guest on the New Year’s Eve show, and was asked by Cohen about ‘the most conventional place’ that the 46-year-old had done LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide), also known as acid.

He then swiftly revealed that he was on the hallucinogenic ‘right now’, adding (via The Mirror): “(I did it) On the helicopter, on my way here… I’m not even lying.”

Completely caught off guard that he had admitted to being on drugs, Cohen and Cooper burst out laughing, while the former pushed with his questions, making sure he understood the situation correctly.

Asking if the DJ was ‘tripping’ right now, Diplo explained that it was only a ‘light trip’, as he ‘micro doses’ them with ‘little droplets’ instead of a spray, though he hinted that he may have ‘macro dosed’ in the day.

Co-host Anderson then piped up, asking how they looked to him while he was under the influence, after the artist asked the camera crew to look at the hosts, as he wasn’t initially able to.

Diplo noted that the pair ‘looked beautiful’, while Cohen and Anderson highlighted to viewers not to try this at home.

LSD can distort the senses of space, distance and time, with those using the drug often perceiving the five senses in different ways, according to the University of Rochester Medical Centre.

Viewers took to social media to share their shock at the DJ’s admission, with one saying: “Diplo saying the most unconventional time he has taken LSD is while he is on with Andy and Anderson was not on my bucket list,” with a laughing face emoji.

Another added on X: “Diplo just revealed he is currently tripping on LSD…This is so unhinged.”

A third joked: “You know how CRAZY Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen probably look if you’re on LSD? Diplo is probably seeing the twins from The Shining.”

“Turned on cnn nye and Andy drunk yelling at diplo who just said he microdosed some lsd live on tv,” a fourth posted with a GIF.

The hosts are known for running an eventful New Year’s show every year, often taking shots every hour to get in the true spirit of the night’s celebrations.

What a way to bring in 2025.
