New Year, new Netflix documentary

Netflix does churn out a lot of duds but one thing they have been delivering on for years are their documentaries.

The streaming giant is hoping to add another classic to its long list of certified documentary hits with its latest one that is due to drop on January 7, 2025.

The doc is set to focus on one of the most controversial and popular shows that was on TV in the 90s and 00s.

The Jerry Springer Show. The show was littered with controversy as a daytime talk show and a recent trailer for the doc, titled Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action has already got people hot with anticipation.

Its presenter, Jerry Springer died back in 2023 from pancreatic cancer, but was well aware of the show’s critics and the many issues it ran into both on and off screen.

In the trailer for the documentary, Springer can be heard saying: “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize for everything I’ve ever done, I have ruined the culture.”

Following the shows success, Springer admitted his TV show had been a ‘circus’ and ‘nuts’ but he also defended its more extreme content. And when we say ‘extreme’ we are talking serious domestic issues, incest, infidelity, and any relationship issue you can imagine.

The show premiered in 1991 and was cancelled in 2018 but during its run the show faced criticism from just about everyone and was dubbed ‘the worst TV show of all time’ by TV Guide magazine in 2002.

However, it still remained immensely popular and was one of the few shows to challenge Oprah Winfrey’s dominance over daytime TV.

People on social media are more than a little bit excited to find out what the documentary reveals about what happened behind the scenes.

The documentary is released on January 7 2025 (Netflix)

One user wrote: “Ohhh I cannot wait for this. The king of drama television finally gets a documentary about his life. I hope they got his approval before he passed away. Rip Jerry Springer.”

Another said: “I will always remember the title of one show “Hillbilly Love Triangles”. I was obviously hooked for that hour of madness.”

A third wrote: “I don’t care what anybody says most of us. Watched this daily drama. Of a show every day and it was great while it lasted.Even though you knew it was mostly fake it was fun and entertaining.”

An assertive statement from Prince Harry a few years ago has vanished from the British Royal family’s website. The removal occurred after he and his wife, Meghan Markle, recently marked a milestone in their post-royal life with their children.

The British Royal Family’s official website has reportedly removed Prince Harry’s 2016 statement condemning the British media’s “racial undertones of comment pieces” about his wife, Meghan Markle.

This removal ends the statement’s seven-year presence on the website. Although it is no longer accessible there, the statement remains visible on the Prince and Princess of Wales’s official X page.

In Harry’s lengthy message, he instructed then Kensington Palace communications secretary Jason Knauf to release the strongly worded message just days after his relationship with Meghan became public.

The statement sparked significant internal conflict within the royal family. In his memoir “Spare,” Harry shared that King Charles III and Prince William were “furious” because the statement made them look bad for not defending their own wives similarly.

Harry’s book also details Meghan’s distressing experiences during that period. As she traveled to see him, paparazzi pursued her at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

Feeling “jittery, exposed,” Meghan found temporary refuge after an Air Canada representative offered her a private room and some food. However, the media scrutiny persisted as she landed in London.

Harry’s statement, meant to protect Meghan, sparked conflict within the royal family. The Duke of Sussex’s book claimed that Charles and William criticized him for making them appear negligent toward their own partners’ harassment.

Harry recalled the tension: “By the time she landed at Heathrow my statement was everywhere. And changing nothing. The onslaught continued.”

This situation starkly contrasted with Harry and Meghan’s earlier visits, where they would “walk around Frogmore gardens” or “talk dreamily about the future.” Instead, they found themselves “stressed out, meeting lawyers, searching for ways to combat this madness.”

The reported removal of Harry’s statement from the royal website highlights ongoing sensitivities and unresolved conflicts within the royal family, particularly in handling media scrutiny and public support.

The Duke and Duchess seemed to love this steakhouse as they dined there a couple of times after relocating to California.

In 2020, the two dined at one of the tables outside the steakhouse while on a double date with their friends Katherine McPhee and David Foster. Meghan was spotted with her agent in 2023 enjoying lunch at this place.

On their fourth wedding anniversary, Meghan and Harry revealed details about their wedding music for a special exhibition at Windsor Castle in the fall of 2018.

This included George Frideric Handel’s “Eternal Source of Light Divine,” performed by Welsh soprano Elin Manahan Thomas as Meghan walked down the aisle on their wedding day.

Meghan revealed the song “was actually Harry’s choice entirely and I think a really beautiful piece.” She said that when listening to the song, she can retrace her walk down the aisle as it is truly special to them. “I think it’s one of those things we’ll treasure forever,” she added.

A sweet video shared on X shows how lovely it felt for Harry to see Meghan walk down the aisle to him with their song playing. When she reached him and he set his eyes on her, he told Meghan, “You look amazing. I’m so lucky.”

Now, Harry and Meghan find their happiness in each other. The lovebirds have built a life in California, where they pursue business and philanthropic endeavors and most importantly, raise their two kids.

Meghan and Harry occasionally offer glimpses into their unique family dynamics. Recently, they even shared their heartfelt perspectives on raising children, revealing more about their parenting philosophy.

The perspective that Harry and Meghan have on children in need is also how Meghan views her own children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Speaking on their upbringing, she noted, “It’s what we see in our own children—to give them that promise and excitement for their futures.”

Her role as a mother intertwines with her public endeavors. She seeks to instill the same hope and ambition in her children that she aims to inspire in children worldwide.

Meghan and Harry’s reflections on their family provide a deeper look into their evolving family dynamics. As their children grow, the couple has observed unique traits and potential in both Archie and Lilibet.

These traits resonate with their own aspirations and values. Meghan shared a touching anecdote about their daughter, Lilibet, who is nearly three years old.

Reflecting on her interactions with Lilibet, Meghan recounted how her daughter once looked at her and said, “Mama, I see me in you,” a statement Meghan interpreted quite literally. This illustrated to Meghan the profound connection and reflection she sees in her children.

Each child has developed their own personality, which their parents cherish. Archie recently celebrated his fifth birthday and has shown a keen interest in construction. Lilibet, on the other hand, has taken an affinity towards singing and dancing.

These interests not only highlight the children’s individual personalities but also how Meghan and Harry nurture these traits. The couple has encouraged their kids to explore and develop their unique talents and passions.

The personal reflections shared by Meghan provide a look into the thoughtful nature of her parenting. She has also talked about the impact of her children’s development on her own perspectives.

Talking about their family, Meghan gushed: “We’re just doing great. And happy to be watching our family grow up and evolve. Of course, I’m happy. We’re really happy.”

In recent months, Meghan and Harry have continued to make public appearances. However, not in the capacity that many once knew them—as “working royals.” Instead, they now engage with the world on their own terms. They still embody the same commitment that characterized their royal duties.

Meghan’s engagement with communities, especially the youth, remains consistent throughout her public life. During her visit to South Africa in 2019, she expressed a heartfelt connection with the young people she met, declaring that she was there as a sister.

In discussions with local youth, Meghan often reflected on her own formative years. She acknowledged the crucial influence of role models.

“I always reflect back on myself as a young girl and the type of inspiration that I wanted to see in other women. I hope in some small way I can be a part of that for a lot of these young girls especially,” Meghan shared.

Looking ahead, Harry and Meghan are enthusiastic about the prospects of expanding their philanthropic work. The couple has acknowledged the limitations that remote interactions have on the effectiveness of their initiatives as they hope to engage more directly with the people they support.

Scientists reveal that what you eat could be a sign you have ADHD

The findings come following a study involving children and their parents

Research looking into the link between ADHD and eating habits has revealed that what and how you eat could be an indicator of the disorder.

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – more commonly known as ADHD – is a neurodevelopmental condition which results in a lack of attention and/or hyperactivity which can interfere with day-to-day functioning or development.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

There are a number of indicators that a person may have ADHD, though the ADHD UK website notes that they depend on the age of the person, how long the symptoms have been present for, and whether or not they’re appropriate for the relevant developmental stage.

Inattention

Examples of inattention include making careless mistakes, failing to listen when spoken to, failing to follow through on instructions, and trouble organizing tasks.

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity

These symptoms may be apparent in behaviors such as fidgeting, excessive talking, and trouble waiting for their turn.

What research has been done into diet and ADHD?

A paper published in the Journal of Attention Disorders explores the link between eating habits and ADHD, with study author Laura Dalnoki and her colleagues researching potential links in young Dutch people aged 16 to 20.

To begin the study, the researchers analyzed data from a 2000-2002 study which looked at pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, and collected data from the children of the parents involved in the study, resulting in 810 adolescent-parent pairs.

The young participants then completed an assessment about their diets, which looked at 28 different food and drinks and questioned often they consumed each item.

The participants also reported whether they had ever been diagnosed with ADHD.

In the meantime, the parents in the study reported on any of their children’s behavioral problems and impulsivity.

The study noticed a pattern with snacking (Getty Stock Photo)

The study noticed a pattern with snacking (Getty Stock Photo)

What is the link between diet and ADHD?

After considering the results, the researchers found that the participants’ diets could be categorized into five groups:

  1. Snacks – including dried snacks, chips and nuts, as well as a high intake of soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit juice
  2. Healthy – lettuce, raw vegetables, fruit, eggs, and tea
  3. Animal-based – dairy products, meat, and fish
  4. Sweet – pastries, candy, chocolate bars, cake, and biscuits
  5. Beverages – diet soft drinks, light fruit juices/drinks, sports drinks, and energy drinks

There were 80 participants who had been diagnosed with ADHD, and the researchers found that this group of people reported eating food and drinks from the ‘snacks’ group more frequently than those without ADHD.

The study authors also noted that participants who scored higher on the ADHD symptom severity assessments completed by their parents were found to consume food and drink items from the snacks category more frequently, and that participants who scored higher on impulsivity seemed to consume sweet items less often, but from the beverage group more often.

All in all, the study authors concluded that impulsivity, ‘rather than ADHD itself’, showed the strongest link to dietary behavior through its association with increased snack consumption. However, since impulsivity is a symptom of ADHD, this also provides a link to the condition.

The authors acknowledged that further research may be needed to fully understand the link, but added: “Targeting adolescents’ impulsive behavior could notably influence their dietary choices, potentially offering substantial health benefits.”

A girl born into poverty, raised by a strict grandmother, and forced to endure harsh circumstances might have seemed destined for hardship. But she defied the odds stacked against her, making a mark on the world in ways few could have imagined.

Born in rural Mississippi, this young girl’s life was shaped by the struggles of her early years. Her mother gave birth to her at just 17, with no formal education, no job training, and no clear path forward.

The family lived without running water, relying on a well for their needs, adding to their daily challenges. This was a time of physical and emotional trials, which would later shape her deeply.

A Childhood Marked by Hardship

It wasn’t her teenage mother who brought her up. Her grandmother, a maid and domestic worker, left the deepest mark on her upbringing. Through tough love, she instilled a sense of discipline, though the environment was far from nurturing.

Growing up on a farm in Mississippi, the girl was expected to follow a rigid set of rules. She often recalled the harsh punishments, including beatings for even minor infractions, such as playing with water on her way back from the well.

These incidents left lasting physical and emotional marks. One particular memory involved being whipped so severely that one of the welts on her back bled through her dress as she prepared for church.

This kind of punishment was common, and she was expected to endure it without complaint. Her grandmother believed in tough love, which was typical of the time and environment. These formative experiences would later shape her empathy for others who faced similar hardships.

Additionally, her grandfather’s dementia cast a long shadow over her childhood. She often felt unsafe, especially at night. One terrifying incident remains etched in her memory. She woke up one night to find her grandfather’s hands around her grandmother’s neck.

Her grandmother managed to push him off and escape, but the fear lingered. From that night on, they slept with a chair under the doorknob and tin cans around it, a makeshift alarm system to alert them of any danger.

This constant state of alertness left her feeling perpetually unsafe and contributed to her resilience and vigilance. As if that wasn’t enough, she was raped by her uncle years later, which resulted in a pregnancy when she was 14. She never got to have the baby as she miscarried, but the experience was traumatic for her.

Finding Healing Through Work

Despite the overwhelming pain she endured during her childhood and teenage years, she discovered a way to transform her trauma into something powerful. As she grew older and began her career, she found that her life’s work allowed her to confront these difficult experiences head-on.

Hosting her talk show became a form of therapy for her and many of her viewers. Her ability to openly discuss challenging topics, such as abuse and trauma, resonated with millions. She once shared that her show provided a platform for healing, not just for herself but for others who had gone through similar experiences.

Through these conversations, she found that sharing her story could help others find solace in their struggles. Her work was more than a job — it became a mission to help others by giving voice to the struggles she had once endured in silence.

Faith was also a pillar that helped her endure the pain. Although her grandmother was strict and didn’t show affection, she passed down a belief system that gave the young girl hope. “She did give me Jesus,” she once shared, adding that this faith gave her a sense of something larger than herself to believe in.

Through her struggles, faith became a source of inner strength that helped her overcome the darkest moments of her life. “I am grateful for that,” she said. This faith would remain a constant in her life, guiding her through her career and personal growth.

From Hardship to Global Fame

The girl who faced poverty, abuse, and countless hardships is none other than Oprah Winfrey, one of the most influential figures in media. Her journey from humble beginnings in Mississippi to becoming a global icon is extraordinary.

She rose to fame as the host of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which became the highest-rated talk show in history, running for 25 years. Reflecting on her success, Oprah often credited her challenging childhood for giving her the strength to empathize with others.

“I wouldn’t take anything for having been raised the way that I was,” she said. Oprah further explored her journey in the book “What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing,” co-authored with Dr. Bruce Perry.

A Journey of Personal Evolution and Family Connections

As Oprah’s career soared, her personal growth also took center stage. Over the years, she evolved from someone who once sought validation from others to a woman standing confidently in her truth. A key turning point in this transformation came when she read Gary Zukav’s book, “The Seat of the Soul.”

The book’s lessons about intention and inner strength helped her find her voice and live authentically. Having a family has also played a significant role in Oprah’s life. In a touching twist, she discovered a long-lost half-sister, Patricia Lofton, in 2010.

Patricia had been given up for adoption shortly after birth, and after many years of searching, she reconnected with Oprah. The two bonded quickly, and Oprah even helped Patricia achieve her dreams by paying for her college education.

In 2017, Patricia graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in social work, and Oprah proudly attended the ceremony. Their reunion brought Oprah’s personal journey full circle, reminding her of the importance of family, even after years of separation.

Living Without Regret: A Life of Reflection and Fulfillment

In 2011, Oprah Winfrey brought her groundbreaking show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” to an end after 25 years of success. Wrapping up her nationally syndicated talk show wasn’t the end of her media influence — Oprah launched the “Oprah Winfrey Network” (OWN) in the same year.

Looking back, she acknowledged that the transition wasn’t as smooth as she had hoped. “I should’ve completed one thing, taken a year to do nothing, and then decided what was the next thing for me to do,” she reflected.

Oprah has since expressed that, while she doesn’t regret ending the show, she regrets not giving herself time to pause and reflect. “What I do regret is trying to do multiple things at the same time,” she said.

Reflecting on her own advice, she added, “I would’ve done the thing that I tell everybody else to do… When you don’t know what to do, do nothing. Get still with yourself and do nothing.”

One choice that Oprah has no regrets about is deciding not to get married or have children. Oprah and her longtime partner, Stedman Graham, were once engaged. However, she decided against marriage, feeling it would have led her down a path that conflicted with her goals.

Oprah has shared several reasons for her decision not to have children. She has mentioned that she realized the immense responsibility and sacrifice required to be a mother through her interactions with many people on her show who had difficult relationships with their parents.

She felt that she wouldn’t be able to balance motherhood with her demanding career. Instead, the TV host found purpose and joy in mentoring and supporting others, particularly the young women at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

“Those girls fill that maternal fold that I perhaps would have had. In fact, they overfill — I’m overflowed with maternal,” Oprah stated. Another source of satisfaction for her has been the moment of closure she experienced with her mother, Vernita Lee.

In November 2018, Vernita passed away at 83 on Thanksgiving. Knowing her mother’s time was short, Oprah had sought to ensure nothing was left unsaid. During her visits, she read a hospice care guide to find the right way to say goodbye.

At one point, she played Mahalia Jackson’s “Precious Lord” on her phone and called Gospel singer Wintley Phipps to sing the song live over FaceTime.

The gesture helped open her mother up emotionally, giving Oprah the chance to thank her for her sacrifices and to tell her to go in peace. Her half-sister, Patricia, also forgave Vernita during this time, creating a sense of healing and closure within the family.

On January 29, 2024, Oprah turned 70. Looking back, she stands firmly by her choices, finding contentment in the life she has built and the impact she has made.

Leah took to TikTok to share the story of how she found the message

Christmas can be tough for a lot of families, with siblings butting heads, parents getting stressed and in-laws becoming upset over whose house you go to for the big day.

Usually you can relax a bit when you’re in your own home, but one TikToker named Leah has made clear that that’s not always the case, as she found out when someone she thought was a loved one unexpectedly came round to visit.

In a video posted just before Christmas, Leah explained that she doesn’t typically listen to her voicemails, but she became aware of this particular message after the visitor showed up at her house.

Leah had been sleeping with her phone on Do Not Disturb, so she hadn’t heard the call come through, but the visitor admitted they’d called her and the message was probably there, waiting.

The visitor admitted to Leah that she’d been ‘talking sh*t’ and began to apologize for what had been said, so Leah let her say her piece before she listened to the message.

“I go look and sure enough, I have a six-minute, 59-second voicemail… The old me immediately would have crashed out, but I didn’t… I let her talk,” Leah said.

When Leah did eventually listen to the message, she admitted she ‘wasn’t expecting some of the things that were said’.

Just days earlier, Leah said she and the family members had been hanging out and ‘loving on each other’, leading her to believe they ‘at least’ liked her.

“I got a 7-minute long voicemail of people I thought loved me talking sh*t about me together,” she said.

Leah chose not to post the voicemail on TikTok – much to the dismay of many of her viewers – but instead shared the story to shed light on how much she’s ‘grown’ this year.

“When you think and react based on logic rather than emotion, you will have so much more peace,” she said. “Not forgiving people and holding a grudge can make you so miserable.”

Leah assured that the group responsible for the voicemail did apologize to her and she did forgive them even though they had ‘no reason’ to be talking badly about her.

“In my mind I know that this had nothing to do with me. This is their own issue,” she concluded.

On Christmas Eve, a wealthy but lonely Dennis stumbles upon a lost eight-year-old boy in the town square. Haunted by memories of his own childhood, Dennis soon finds his life changing in ways he never expected.

The square was alive with lights and laughter. Kids zipped around on skates, their cheeks red from the cold. Couples walked hand in hand, leaning close, bundled up, and smiling. A small group of carolers sang on the corner near the big tree, voices warm even in the chilly air.

I took it all in, trying to feel… something. You’d think a successful guy like me, an orphan who grew up to be a businessman, wouldn’t feel out of place here.

But here I was, alone, like every other holiday season. I’d had a few relationships over the years, but my partners saw dollar signs, not me.

Suddenly, I felt someone collide with me, and I turned to see a young woman sprawled on the ground, looking up at me with a grin. Her laughter was contagious, and for a split second, I couldn’t help but smile back. She was beautiful, bright-eyed, with a spark that caught me off guard.

“Oops,” she laughed, still sitting there. “Sorry! Guess I’m not as good on skates as I thought.”

“It’s alright,” I said, offering a hand to help her up. “You sure you’re okay?”

But just as quickly, a tall guy came over, scowling as he pulled her away from me. “Hey, buddy, what’s the deal here? Hitting on my girl?”

“No, I wasn’t,” I said quickly, backing off, with my hands up. “Just helping her up, that’s all.”

“Yeah, well, don’t,” he muttered, shooting me a glare as he led her away. She looked back once, mouthing a quick “Sorry,” and then they were gone, swallowed by the crowd.

I stood there for a moment, shaking my head. “So much for miracles,” I muttered. I turned to leave, ready to head home.

Then I felt a small tug on my coat. I turned around, half-expecting that girl again, but instead, I found myself looking down at a boy. He couldn’t have been more than eight, with wide brown eyes and a nervous look on his face. He clutched a small keychain, his hand trembling.

“Excuse me, sir,” he said, voice soft and polite. “I… I need some help. I can’t find my family. Haven’t seen them in days.”

The words hit me like a blast of cold air. “You… you lost your family?” I asked, lowering myself to his eye level. “When did you last see them?”

The boy looked down, shuffling his feet. “I’m not sure. I been lookin’ for a while, though. But… but please, sir, don’t call the police.”

“Not the police?” I asked, puzzled. “But if you’ve been lost for days—”

He shook his head vigorously. “No, no police. I heard people sayin’ that sometimes, when parents don’t have much money, the police take kids away. And… and my family doesn’t have much. They’re poor. I’m afraid they’ll… well, they’ll take me away, too.”

I looked at him, feeling a pang of something I hadn’t felt in years. I knew what it was like to be a kid worried about getting taken away.

“Alright,” I said gently, resting a hand on his shoulder. “No police, I promise. We’ll just… we’ll figure this out. Okay?”

He nodded, relief flashing across his face. “Thank you, sir. I didn’t know who else to ask.”

“Call me Dennis,” I said. “And what’s your name?”

“Ben,” he replied, clutching his keychain a little tighter.

“Alright, Ben,” I said. “Let’s get you home. Do you know where you live?”

He nodded. “It’s a little ways from here. I can show you. I think I remember.”

I called my driver, and we waited in the cold as he pulled up to the curb. Ben climbed in first, tucking himself into the back seat. I followed, shutting the door and glancing over at him. “So,” I said, trying to make conversation, “what kind of keychain is that? Looks pretty special.”

He looked down, fingers wrapped around the tiny silver heart on his keychain. “It’s… well, it’s just a keychain they give you at this place I stayed at once.”

I looked at it more closely, realizing that it looked familiar. Very familiar.

“So, you like Christmas?” I asked instead.

“Yeah, it’s nice,” he mumbled, still looking out the window.

When we reached the address he’d given, I got out and walked with him up to the front door. He knocked once, then again. Silence.

“Maybe they went to my grandparents’ place,” he said, though he didn’t sound convinced.

I glanced back at the square, its lights twinkling in the distance. “Alright, Ben,” I said, kneeling down to his level. “Maybe we’ll give it some time. How about we head back to the square and enjoy a few things while we wait? Have you ever been skating?”

He looked at me, his eyes lighting up. “I haven’t! Can we?”

I stood up, smiling. “Sure. Why not?”

As we headed back to the square, Ben’s face lit up with excitement. The whole place was glowing, with lights strung up on every tree and children darting around. I hadn’t done much for the holidays in a long time, but tonight felt different.

“So, skating first?” I asked, nodding toward the rink.

Ben’s eyes went wide. “Really? Can I?”

“Absolutely. Let’s get some skates.”

Minutes later, we were on the ice. Ben took off, shaky at first, his little arms flailing. I was no expert, but I managed to stay upright. We slipped, stumbled, and laughed. I felt lighter than I had in years.

“Look, Dennis! I got it!” he shouted, gliding a little more steadily, a grin stretched across his face.

“You’re a pro already,” I laughed, half-joking. “I’m gonna need lessons from you!”

After skating, we tried one of the carnival games—throwing rings onto bottles. He didn’t win, but he nearly knocked over the whole stand with how excited he was.

“Can we get hot chocolate?” he asked, eyeing the stand nearby.

“Of course,” I said. We got our steaming cups, finding a bench to sit and watch the crowd. As he sipped, Ben looked so content. His cheeks were flushed, and there was a peace in his expression that felt like a gift.

I looked at him, a warmth growing in my chest that I hadn’t felt in years. I’d only known this boy for a few hours, yet I felt connected to him. And I didn’t want the night to end.

But eventually, I cleared my throat. “Ben, maybe… maybe it’s time to head back to the shelter.”

He looked up, surprised, and for a moment, his face fell. “How did you know?”

I smiled gently, pointing at his keychain. “I recognized that keychain the second I saw it. They gave out the same ones when I stayed there.”

His eyes widened. “You… you were at the shelter?”

I nodded. “A long time ago. I was around your age. So, I understand. I get what it feels like to want a family, even just for a night.”

Ben’s eyes dropped to the ground, and he nodded slowly. “I just… I wanted to feel like I had a family, you know? Just for Christmas.”

“Yeah,” I said softly. “I know. And I’m really glad I got to spend Christmas Eve with you, Ben.”

He looked up, and I saw the gratitude in his eyes. “Me too, Dennis.”

We walked back to the shelter in silence, the warmth of the evening settling between us. When we arrived, a familiar face was waiting outside. It was her, the young woman who’d bumped into me earlier. Her eyes widened with relief as she spotted us.

“There you are!” she exclaimed, rushing over to Ben and hugging him tightly. “We were so worried about you. We should notify the police you’re back.”

Ben squeezed her hand, mumbling, “I was okay. Dennis helped me.”

The woman looked up at me, her expression softening. “Thank you so much for bringing him back.” She let out a breath, then added with a tired smile, “I’m Sarah. I volunteer here. We’ve been searching for him since this afternoon.”

“Nice to meet you, Sarah,” I said, realizing this must be more than a chance meeting. We stood there for a moment, caught in a quiet, shared relief. She looked exhausted, her face a mix of worry and something else—hurt, maybe.

I hesitated, then asked, “Rough night?”

She nodded, looking away. “I found out my boyfriend… well, he was cheating on me. Tonight, of all nights.” She laughed sadly, brushing a tear away. “But I guess that’s how it goes.”

On impulse, I blurted, “Well… would you maybe like to get a coffee?”

She looked down at Ben, then back at me. “Actually… I’d love that.”

Over the next few months, I found myself at the shelter often. Sarah and I would meet there, talking for hours and helping out together.

The more time we spent, the closer we grew, both to each other and to Ben. He seemed to shine whenever we were all together, and soon the shelter felt like the home I hadn’t realized I’d been missing.

By the time the next Christmas rolled around, everything had changed. Sarah and I were now married, and Ben had officially become our son. That Christmas Eve, we went back to the square, the three of us hand in hand, surrounded by laughter and lights.

We watched the skaters, sipped our hot cocoa, and felt at peace as our own little family, a miracle in the making.

Gen Z and millennials start new career trend ‘microretirement’ and it's getting more popular

The trend is intended to stop workers from getting burned out at their jobs

If you’re only a few years into your career and already thinking about retirement, there’s a new trend that might be perfect for you.

Dubbed ‘microretirement’, the trend has been picked up by Gen Zers and millennials – generations of people who aren’t anywhere near retirement age yet, but who refuse to accept that there’s nothing but work ahead for the next three-five decades.

After years of changing schools, trying out hobbies and eventually starting a new job, it can be daunting to think that this is ‘it’ – so young people are now fighting back.

What is ‘microretirement’?

The term is starting to be thrown around on TikTok as users explain exactly how they’re taking a mini-retirement years before they’d usually finish work.

Essentially, the trend refers to taking a chunk or multiple chunks of time off work to experience life and travel while you’re young, rather than waiting until actual retirement age in your 50s or 60s. It’s similar to a sabbatical, and has also been dubbed an ‘adult gap year’.

Who is ‘microretiring’?

TikToker and content creator Anaïs Felt is among those giving ‘microretirement’ a go, as she explained in a video earlier this year.

Anaïs is only 31, but she told viewers she’d heard the term ‘microretirement’ and realized she was already in one herself after deciding to take a step back from her corporate job in tech.

“I actually took off six months ago […] and I’ve just started interviewing again,” she explained, adding that none of the companies she’d interviewed with seemed to be concerned about her career break.

Another person giving microretirement a go is 27-year-old Morgan Sanner, who told The Cut: “I think Gen Z is interested in less traditional models of employment, in general. For example, we’re far more likely to freelance or do contract work than previous generations. I hope that as we become a bigger part of the workforce, mini-retirements become more doable and more normalized.”

What are the benefits of ‘microretiring’?

When it comes to her break from work, Anaïs said she has ‘never felt better’.

“I’ve never felt healthier, I’ve never felt more rested, it’s been amazing, I highly recommend it,” she continued, before expressing belief that millennials who are in leadership roles are ‘really starting to respect’ the need of younger staff members to take time off and ‘recuperate’.

How can you take a ‘microretirement’?

Though the idea of giving up work might be tempting, it’s easier said than done when you have to feed yourself, and keep some kind of roof over your head.

Those trying ‘microretirements’ have made clear they’ve planned ahead, with Anaïs explaining that she prepared for her time away from work by paying off a large amount of her student loan and saving up a ‘sizeable’ sum of money.

As a caveat to her time off work, Anaïs told her followers: “I also am childfree. I come from a low-income background and am the first person in my family to go to college and do this….so it is possible with the right strategy, grit and resilience.”

Similarly, Sanner plans to cover the cost of her break by saving up a year’s worth of living expenses as well as a ‘fund’ for her time off. While she travels, she also plans to continue working freelance to supplement her savings.

Cara Nicole, a 28-year-old who is planning to take a career break in the near future, told The Cut: “Do the math. If you can figure out how to take a few months off every couple of years without dipping into your nest egg, it’s worth prioritizing.”

Early Childhood: One Year Old

In 2009, Nahla was just a year old. In a heartwarming photo taken on August 23, she is seen cradled in her father’s arms. Her curly hair frames her curious, wide-eyed face.

Dressed in a simple white top and jeans, with tiny light green Crocs on her feet, Nahla is a picture of innocence. Aubry, looking every bit the doting dad, carries his daughter through the streets with a protective yet loving demeanor.

As she grew into her toddler years, her adventures brought both joy and worry to her parents. At two years old, a particular incident showed just how challenging parenting can be. Berry shared a nerve-wracking experience that many parents can relate to.

A Toddler’s Adventures: Two Years Old

When Nahla was two, Berry experienced one of the scariest moments a parent can face. While shopping in a department store, Berry momentarily lost sight of her. She described frantically looking for her daughter, calling for the store’s doors to be shut to prevent anyone from leaving.

To Berry’s relief, Nahla was found just a foot away, hiding under a turnstile. As Nahla continued to grow, her appearances with her parents remained a source of public interest. Even at three years old, her bond with her parents and her evolving style was evident.

Growing Up: Three Years Old

By the time Nahla was three years old, she had already charmed the public with her sweet demeanor and close bond with her parents. On July 26, 2011, Nahla was seen holding hands with her mother in Century City, Los Angeles.

Adorable Moments: Five Years Old

When Nalhla was five, her charm and personality were even more captivating. On May 14, 2013, in Los Angeles, she was spotted leaving a store with her mother.

Dressed in a purple tank top adorned with colorful heart designs and white leggings, her hair was neatly tied into pigtails, and she carried a shopping bag, looking every bit the stylish and happy little girl.

Just a few days later, on May 17, 2013, Nahla was seen walking hand-in-hand with her father, Aubry. She wore a white sundress with colorful embroidery, beige shorts, and white sneakers, her long curly hair flowing freely. Her joyful expression and tight grip on her father’s hand showed their close bond.

Controversy: Six Years Old

When Nahla was six, her family faced a significant controversy regarding her appearance. Berry took her ex-partner, Aubry, to court, accusing him of straightening and lightening their daughter’s naturally curly hair. Berry claimed that these actions were an attempt to alter Nahla’s appearance to deny her African-American heritage.

The court documents revealed Berry’s concerns about the psychological and physical impact these changes could have on Nahla. She worried that altering her natural look might make her question why her natural appearance wasn’t acceptable.

Despite the controversy, Nahla continued to grow and flourish. Her public appearances with her parents showed a young girl growing more confident and self-assured with each passing year.

Transition to Adolescence: 7 to 12 Years Old

As Nahla entered her pre-teen years, her growth and evolving style became even more apparent. By the time she was seven years old, she was frequently seen with her mother.

One notable moment was in October 2015, when she was spotted walking hand-in-hand with Berry. She wore a red polo shirt and a light gray skirt, her curly hair framing her face and held back with glasses. At this age, she stood noticeably taller, her head reaching around her mother’s upper waist.

By nine years old, Nahla had grown even more. In a 2017 photo during a shopping and lunch outing with her mother in Los Angeles, she stood almost shoulder-height to Berry.

She wore a gray T-shirt, comfortable gray sweatpants, and fluffy slippers, her hair pulled back into a high, curly ponytail. Her increasing height and maturity were evident, showcasing her transition from a young girl to a budding adolescent.

In 2018, when Nahla was ten years old, her public outings continued to draw attention. One particular moment captured her enjoying an ice cream cone with her mother, both appearing relaxed and content. Her height had become a defining feature, as she now stood shoulder-height to Berry.

At eleven years old in 2019, she continued to grow taller, reaching her mother’s shoulder height. Despite her increasing visibility, Berry worked hard to protect Nahla’s privacy, explaining in a May 2019 interview that she wanted her children to have their own lives, away from the public eye.

By twelve years old in 2020, Nahla was often seen walking with her mother and younger brother, Maceo. Nahla’s height and mature presence were striking, as she now stood almost chin-height to her mother.

By the time Nahla turned fifteen, she had transformed into a poised and confident young woman, standing taller than her mother. Photos of her sparked a mix of admiration and debate among internet users.

Recent Years: 15 Years Old

On March 16, 2023, Berry posted photos to celebrate her daughter’s 15th birthday, and the images showcased just how much Nahla had grown and matured over the years.

In one photo, Nahla sat comfortably on a sofa, wearing a plaid shirt and a brown cap that partially hid her face. Her long legs stretched out, highlighting her tall stature and relaxed, confident demeanor. This image captured Nahla’s poised transition into young adulthood.

Another photo showed a younger Nahla lying on a net hammock over the water, with a scenic view in the background. She was dressed casually in a green top and denim shorts, her curly hair blowing in the breeze.

“My mini me (but not so mini anymore),” read a caption to another post shared by Berry on August 14, 2023. In these photos, Nahla towered over her mother, indicating just how much she had grown.

In the first photo, Berry sat casually in a white chair, enjoying a relaxed moment. She wore a pink dress with feathered trim and stylish pink boots, accessorized with a colorful heart-shaped purse. Her long hair cascaded naturally, and she exuded confidence and poise.

More photos captured Nahla walking alongside her mother, with her face away from view. From these angles, it was evident that she was taller than Berry, showcasing a significant growth spurt.

The reaction from fans was mixed. Some were amazed by how much Nahla had grown. Comments like, “Wow, that baby stretched herself right out, good for her! Tower over them all!” and “Omg, that’s Nahla? She’s so tall!” reflected the admiration for her growth. However, some fans were divided over her fashion choices.

While many praised her stylish outfits, others felt that her attire was too mature for her age. Comments such as, “The shoes, the dress. Pretty sure my 15-year-old will not be wearing that out of the house,” highlighted the debate over Nahla’s evolving style.

Sweet Sixteen

At sixteen, Nahla marks a milestone in her journey from childhood to young adulthood. Recently, Berry attended the 2024 CinemaCon where she was promoting her new horror movie, “Never Let Go.”

Speaking after the event, she couldn’t help but gush about her children. Berry proudly spoke about Nahla and her brother, saying, “My children are my most valued treasures.”

Nahla’s transformation over the years, marked by public appearances and cherished family moments, showcases the loving support of her parents, Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry.

A real event partially influenced Wes Craven’s inspiration for A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a cult classic, but the stories that partially inspired it are equally terrifying.

A lot of your favorite horror film classics have Nightmare on Elm Street to thank for setting the bar on what it means to have a great villain and plot.

The 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street turned 40 this year, and without it, director Wes Craven might not have been able to give us the Scream franchise or Red Eye.

In case you didn’t know, A Nightmare on Elm Street followed a group of teenagers being haunted in their dreams by Freddy Krueger, a scarred man with a gloved hand and wisecracks to boot.

However, the real kicker is that if he catches them as they sleep, they die in real life – meaning the only option was to stay awake or risk death in the most creative of ways.

The surprise hit film spawned a whopping 9 sequels, comic books, TV shows and has shown up in a whole host of video games over the years.

While the film might seem a bit tame by today’s standards, back in the 80s, it was a terrifying phenomenon and would go on to be mimicked and parodied for decades.

But what makes the film even scarier all these years later is that it was inspired by a real life phenomenon.

Now there wasn’t exactly a clawed serial killer demon that was going after teenagers, but there was a time in Los Angeles where unexplained deaths of young men were causing a stir.

Craven explained in a TV interview about his inspirations for the script, and he said that in 1970s, he’d read a newspaper story about a young Cambodian man, who’d came to the US after war and genocide, which left him with terrifying nightmares.

The director said (via Metro): “His father was a physician and had given him sleeping pills, and the kid supposedly was taking them.

“They had come out of Southeast Asia from a camp, so the family just assumed that he had been traumatized.

“He said ‘No, no, it’s different. There’s something stalking me in my dream. I don’t want to sleep.’ And he actually kept himself awake.”

The man finally fell asleep, much to the relief of his family, however, shortly after he was put to bed, they heard ‘screaming and thrashing’ coming from his room.

“They ran into his room, and he was just screaming, kicking in his bed, and then he fell silent, and he was dead.” Craven said. “He hadn’t taken any of sleeping pills. It was so dramatic. It was like, holy s***.

“This guy knew he was going to die if he slept. And you have to sleep, whatever you do. How terrifying.”

According to Craven, that became the ‘central line of Nightmare on Elm Street‘, as per Vulture.

Scarily enough, this wasn’t the only incident as there were dozens of reports about Southeast Asian refugees in US dying for unknown reasons in their sleep at the time, Metro further reports.

The phenomenon was later named sudden unexplained death syndrome (SUDS) which most often impacted Asian men when they were sleeping, with their postmortem examination often not revealing a cause of death, as per National Library of Medicine.

Parents Started Charging Me Rent Because I Had Decorated My Room – Karma Hit Back

When my parents demanded rent for the basement I’d turned into a haven, they never expected it would lead to my escape and their ultimate regret.

I’d always felt like the black sheep in my family. It was not just a feeling, though. It was pretty obvious when you looked at how differently my parents treated me and my younger brother, Daniel.

When I was 17, we moved to a two-bedroom house, and my parents decided Daniel needed his own room. Instead of sharing like normal siblings, they shoved me into our unfinished basement.

Meanwhile, he got this huge, bright room upstairs, complete with brand-new everything, like furniture, decorations, and even a gaming setup. Me? I got whatever junk they could scrounge up from the garage.

I remember the day they showed me my new “room.”

Mom gestured around the cold, concrete space like it was some kind of prize. “Elena, honey, isn’t this exciting? You’ll have so much space down here!”

I stared at the bare bulb dangling from the ceiling, the cobwebs in the corners, and the musty smell that clung to everything. “Yeah, Mom. Super exciting.”

Dad clapped me on the shoulder. “That’s the spirit, kiddo! And hey, maybe we can fix it up a bit later, huh?”

Later never came, of course. But I wasn’t about to live in a dungeon forever.

I picked up an after-school job at the local grocery store, bagging groceries and pushing carts. It wasn’t glamorous, but every paycheck brought me closer to transforming my basement prison.

My Aunt Teresa was my saving grace through it all. She’s the only one who knew what my life was like at home.

So, when she heard what I was doing with the basement, she started coming over on weekends, armed with paintbrushes and a contagious enthusiasm.

“Alright, Ellie-girl,” she’d say, tying back her wild curls. “Let’s make this place shine!”

We started with paint, turning the dingy walls into a soft lavender. Then came curtains to hide the tiny windows, area rugs to cover the cold floor, and string lights to chase away the shadows.

It took months because my job didn’t exactly pay much, but slowly, the basement became mine. I hung up posters of my favorite bands, arranged my books on salvaged shelves, and even managed to snag a secondhand desk for homework.

The day I hung up the final touch, a set of LED lights around my bed, I stepped back and felt something I hadn’t in a long time or perhaps my entire life: pride.

I was admiring my handiwork when I heard footsteps on the stairs. Mom and Dad appeared and looked around with raised eyebrows.

“Well, well,” Dad said, his eyes narrowing. “Looks like someone’s been busy.”

I waited for praise, or at least acknowledgment of my hard work. Instead, Mom pursed her lips.

“Elena, if you have money for all this,” she waved her hand at my carefully curated space, “then you can start contributing to the household.”

My jaw dropped. “What?”

“That’s right,” Dad nodded. “We think it’s time you started paying rent.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Rent? I’m 17! I’m still in high school!”

“And clearly making enough to redecorate,” Mom countered, crossing her arms. “It’s time you learned some financial responsibility.”

I wanted to scream. Daniel had a room three times the size of mine, fully furnished and decorated on their dime, and he’d never worked a day in his life. Yes, he was younger, but still, it was more of their unfairness.

Unfortunately, I knew I couldn’t argue with them, so I bit my tongue. “Fine,” I managed. “How much?”

They named a figure that made my stomach sink. It was doable, but it meant saying goodbye to any hopes of saving for college, which was my plan now that the basement was done.

As if to add insult to injury, Daniel chose that moment to thunder down the stairs. He took one look around and let out a low whistle.

“Whoa, sis. Nice cave.” His eyes landed on my LED lights. “Hey, are these strong?”

Before I could stop him, he reached up and yanked on the strip. The lights came down with a sad flicker, leaving a trail of peeled paint behind them.

“Daniel!” I cried. But my parents rushed to him, asked if something was wrong, and just shrugged at me.

“Boys will be boys,” Dad chuckled as if his golden boy hadn’t just destroyed something I’d worked months for.

So, there I was, standing in my once-again darkened room, fighting back tears of frustration. In the grand scheme of things, Daniel had only ruined my lights, and I could fix that up. But in truth, it was more than that.

It was a symbol of my life; always second best, always the afterthought. But karma, as they say, has a way of evening the score.

A few weeks later, my parents invited Aunt Teresa over for dinner along with some friends. She brought along a woman named Ava, an interior designer from her book club.

We all sat around the dining table and picked at Mom’s overcooked pot roast while she gushed about Daniel and his football team.

But suddenly, Aunt Teresa spoke up. “Ava, you’ve got to see what my niece has done with the basement. It’s incredible!”

I felt my cheeks heat up as all eyes turned to me. “It’s not that big a deal,” I mumbled.

But Ava was intrigued. “I’d love to see it. Do you mind?”

Ignoring my parents’ tight smiles, I led Ava downstairs. As she looked around, her eyes widened.

“Elena, this is amazing. You did all this yourself?”

I nodded, suddenly shy. “Most of it. My aunt helped with some of the bigger stuff.”

Ava ran her hand along the repurposed bookshelf I’d salvaged from a neighbor’s curb. “You have a real eye for design. There wasn’t much potential here, but the way you’ve maximized the space, the color choices… it’s really impressive.”

For the first time in forever, I felt a spark of hope. “Really?”

She nodded and smiled. “In fact, we have an internship opening up at my firm. It’s usually for college students, but… I think we could make an exception for a high school student about to go to college. Are you interested in design as a career?”

I had to stop my jaw from falling off when I tried to speak. “Absolutely! I mean, I’ve never really considered it professionally, but I love it.”

Ava smiled. “Well, consider it now. The internship is paid, and if you do a good job, you might be able to earn a scholarship from the company for college if you pursue design. What do you say?”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Yes! A thousand times, yes! Thank you!”

“Excellent! You can begin straight away. I’ll call you with details later,” Ava nodded and bypassed my parents as she headed upstairs.

I hadn’t even realized they had followed us downstairs. Their faces were stunned, and my brother looked confused that, for once, the spotlight was on someone else.

That internship changed everything. Suddenly, I had a direction, a purpose, and most importantly, people who valued and wanted me to succeed.

So, I threw myself into learning everything I could about design, stayed late at the firm, and soaked up knowledge like a sponge.

Over the next few months, I juggled school, my internship, and my part-time job at the grocery store. It was exhausting but exhilarating.

At home, things were… different. My parents seemed unsure how to treat me now. The rent demands stopped. Instead, they asked me about my “little job.”

“So, uh, how’s that design thing going?” Dad would wonder over dinner, but he always avoided my eyes.

“It’s great,” I’d reply, trying to keep things nonchalant. My joy didn’t belong to them. “I’m learning so much.”

Daniel, for his part, seemed bewildered. “I don’t get it,” he complained one day. “Why does Elena get an internship and not me?”

Mom patted his hand. “Well, sweetie, that’s because you’re still young. You’ll get an even better one later.”

I rolled my eyes. Of course, they had to placate the favorite.

As the school year progressed, I started putting together my portfolio for college applications. Ava was an incredible mentor, who guided me through the process and helped me choose my best work.

“You’ve got a real talent, Elena,” she told me one afternoon in her office after hours. She had kindly stayed back, so I could finish up my plans. “These schools would be lucky to have you.”

Her words gave me the confidence to aim high. I applied to some of the top design programs in the country, including Ava’s alma mater.

Afterward, the waiting was agony, but finally, it happened. I was in the basement, touching up some paint on my bookshelf, when I heard Mom call down.

“Elena? There’s a big envelope here for you.”

I took the stairs two at a time and ripped the envelope from her hands. “Dear Elena, We are pleased to offer you admission to our School of Design…” My knees went weak, but it only got better!

I couldn’t believe it. Not only had I gotten in, but I’d been offered a full scholarship by the school, the same one Ava attended.

“Well?” Mom asked and gave me a tight smile. “What does it say?”

“I got in. Full ride,” I said, looking up as my eyes watered.

For a moment, there was silence. Then, she went back upstairs. She couldn’t even muster a small congratulation.

My dad said nothing at dinner, and Daniel was somehow angry.

I felt their bitterness. But I didn’t care. Finally, I had what I wanted. Ava held a small celebration for me at the office, and Aunt Teresa held a big bash. It was all I needed.

The next room I decorated was my dorm… then, I redecorated my entire life with colors that shone like my soul, the patterns that made the world unique, and the family I made along the way, who were as supportive as a nice, cozy bed frame that lasts for decades.
