Federal layoffs | Fired federal workers speak out on recent terminations: 'we're under attack by billionaires' - ABC11 Raleigh-Durham

Thousands of federal workers have been abruptly terminated in recent days, leaving many struggling with uncertainty about their futures. Among them is Hanna Hickman, a former senior litigation counsel for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), who described the experience as both shocking and frightening. “It’s scary,” Hickman told ABC News. “I had a real moment—I was at CVS the other day and it kind of came on me all at once that I might not have health insurance in a few weeks, and that really hits you. It underscores the fact that we’re just regular, middle-class people, just like the people we’re trying to serve. “Hickman is one of thousands of federal employees, mostly new hires classified as probationary workers, who were laid off this past week. These employees, many of whom had been in their roles for less than two years, lack the job protections that apply to more senior federal workers. The layoffs hit multiple agencies, including the Department of Education, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the CFPB. Hickman, who had worked at CFPB for nearly two years, received her termination notice unexpectedly around 9 p.m. last Tuesday. “It was shocking, frankly—not just to us but to our direct managers, who had not been told this would happen and received notice of the terminations at the same time we did because they were CC’d,” she said.

Here's Where Trump's Government Layoffs Are Happening—Medicare, FDA and More

he situation at CFPB has been particularly chaotic. Just days before the terminations, employees were informed they could not enter the office. Hickman’s belongings remain inside the building, but she has been locked out of all work systems. “It’s really a shock,” she added. “Especially for a lawyer, because we have professional obligations. I have a case that I’m currently litigating for the bureau, and all of a sudden, I’m cut off from our systems. It’s the equivalent of being escorted out of the building and fired. It’s just absolutely shocking, especially when there have been no concerns about my performance during my time at the bureau. “Hickman last entered the CFPB office on Friday, February 7—the same day that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency made sweeping changes to the agency. That day, Musk posted on X: “CFPB RIP. “”We’re under attack by billionaires, but I’m not a billionaire,” Hickman said. “For me, the next steps are scary. I’m trying to stay focused on working productively, but it’s a scary moment .”Hickman believes Musk is attempting to dismantle the agency, which was created by Congress to regulate financial markets and protect consumers from predatory practices. However, she and several former colleagues plan to fight back, exploring legal avenues to challenge the terminations .

“Civil servants do this work to fight for regular Americans,” she said. “That’s what the job is. That’s why it’s intended to be insulated from partisan swings. That’s why it requires expert people skills and experience, and that’s why there are these protections around the jobs. We go to work every day to fight for regular people. “Hickman explained that the CFPB acts as “the cops on the beat for the financial market,” working to prevent financial crises, fraudulent loan schemes, and excessive interest rates. “Donald Trump and Elon Musk can just call their lawyers,” she said. “But regular people don’t have lawyers on speed dial. These agencies exist to fill that gap and to keep people safe. “For Hickman, working at CFPB was a calling. “It was something I felt really passionate about doing in this next phase of my career,” she said. “I spent 15 years in private practice before this, and this was just a whole different type of work—one that was incredibly fulfilling before I was terminated. “Hickman is not alone in her frustration. Other federal employees have spoken out about how they were fired without warning or explanation. Earlier this week, ABC News obtained copies of termination notices sent to federal workers. The notices simply stated, “The Agency finds, based on your performance, that you have not demonstrated that your further employment at the Agency would be in the public interest.

“However, many of those who received these notices say they were never given performance warnings or evaluations indicating any problems .Chelsea Milburn, a disabled veteran, was fired from the Department of Education on Wednesday. She received a memo that gave no specifics about why she was being let go.”I was definitely upset,” Milburn said. “I’ve only ever gotten positive feedback from my team and leadership, so I was pretty surprised to get that email. “One former probationary employee at the Department of Education recalled receiving an unexpected phone call from a supervisor who was in tears. “I’m getting word that you’ve been terminated,” the supervisor told the employee .The worker, who spoke anonymously for fear of impacting future job opportunities, described the experience as “devastating. “”It was heartbreaking,” the former employee said. “When I went up to my computer, it was already locked down. I couldn’t access anything. I’m still trying to reach out to HR to find out if I get a severance package. What happens to my health insurance? When does it end? Nobody knows anything. “As fired federal workers try to navigate the fallout, many remain in limbo. The abrupt mass terminations have left employees without clear answers about their benefits, severance, or next steps. Legal experts say the nature of these terminations—especially those targeting probationary hires—makes it difficult to challenge them through traditional employment protections. While unions and advocacy groups may attempt to intervene, the affected employees have little immediate recourse. For now, those who have lost their jobs are left with difficult decisions. Some, like Hickman, are considering legal options. Others are scrambling to find new employment, unsure of when their next paycheck will arrive. In the meantime, the Trump administration continues its push to restructure the federal workforce, with Musk at the center of controversial efforts to cut government agencies and overhaul staffing practices .

For workers like Hickman, the fight isn’t over “We were doing this job to help people,” she said. “And if they think we’re just going to go quietly, they’re wrong.”

The actor dated a string of famous faces before finding his wife

The actor, 48, has been off the market for the last decade or so, having married Gossip Girl star Blake Lively in September 2011 and since welcoming four children together.

We know he’s got the dad humour down pat, but back in the day, he must have been quite the smooth talker too.

Over the years, Reynolds is said to have dated a string of famous faces – and he even got hitched to one of them, although that milestone always seems to slip everyone’s minds.

So, let’s take a look at some of his former partners who are also in the public eye.

Melissa Joan Hart

Reynolds had a teenage romance with actress Melissa Joan Hart, now 48, after he starred as her love interest in the 1996 movie, Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

During an appearance on the podcast Hey Dude… The 90s Called! in 2023, she revealed she had a ‘little thing’ with the Deadpool star when she was 19.

Hart also said of their relationship on Australia’s Studio 10 talk show in 2017: “We were smitten and cute. He was adorable. He was a really nice guy.”

“He wasn’t like, the Ryan Reynolds everybody knows these days,” she added. “He was sweet. He was very sweet.”

But their puppy love wasn’t to last, as Hart revealed that she actually had another boyfriend at the time.

Recalling her dating dilemma, she told Beyond Candid with Giuliana in 2014: “He came to New York to visit me. I think he wanted something more, but I decided I was going to stick with my boyfriend.”

Traylor Howard

He starred alongside Howard on the hit sitcom (20th Century Fox)

Before becoming a movie star, Reynolds had a host of other roles on TV shows such as Hillside, The Odyssey, and In Cold Blood.

But his big break came in 1998 when he bagged the lead role in the four season sitcom Two Guys and a Girl, playing medical student Michael ‘Berg’ Bergen alongside Richard Ruccolo.

Me, Myself & Irene actress Traylor Howard, now 58, was the girl referenced in the title of the show, and it was rumoured that her and Reynolds grew close on set.

However, the pair never publicly confirmed their romance, although they have apparently remained firm friends since the series finished in 2001.

In 2022, Reynolds said Two Guys and a Girl was ‘one of the best jobs’ he has ever had, telling Inverse he would sign up for a reunion ‘in a heartbeat’.

“I loved every second of it,” he said. “Even yesterday, I spoke with Nathan Fillion and Traylor Howard.”

Kristen Johnston

In the late 90s, Reynolds and 3rd Rock from the Sun star Kristen Johnston were briefly an item.

They reportedly got together in August 1999, before calling time on their romance in January the following year after just a few months.

Johnston had nothing but good things to say when she was quizzed about her former flame in 2020.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the 57-year-old said of her romance with Reynolds: “It was so long ago I forgot, but literally, so nice, great guy, lovely. Lovely person.”

The duo attended the premiere of Tom Hanks’ hit movie, The Green Mile, together in 1999.

Rachel Leigh Cook

According to reports, Reynolds made quite the declaration of love for Rachel Leigh Cook when they supposedly started dating in early 2001.

The Green Lantern actor is said to have flown to the UK to surprise the She’s All That alum, 45, while she was filming the romcom Blow Dry.

IMDb states that their romance blossomed from there, seeing them date for another year.

However, once again, this is just the rumour mill, as the pair did not confirm their romance.

Alanis Morissette

Seven-time Grammy winner Alanis Morissette started dating Reynolds in 2002 after meeting at Drew Barrymore’s birthday party in February that year.

He even popped the question to the ‘Ironic’ singer, now 50, in 2004, while she said that they shared ‘the perfect combination of compatibility and incompatibility that makes the relationship very passionate’.

“It’s perfect,” she told People at the time. “I think it’s about stretching each other.”

However, they broke up three years after their engagement and Morissette later told Entertainment Weekly she would be ‘avoiding [public romances] in the future’.

Discussing their split, she also told the Los Angeles Times in 2008“It’s having had too many of them [heartbreaks]. And I was a full-blown love addict, so it was like, ‘I can’t keep doing this, my body can’t take it’.

“Breakups are a horrible thing for almost everybody I know. For someone who is a love addict, it’s debilitating.”

Scarlett Johansson

For some reason, a lot of people seem to forget that Reynolds was married to Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson from 2008 to late 2010.

Even their A-list pals like Gwyneth Paltrow, 52, have wiped it from their memory, as Johansson, 40, found out during a 2023 appearance on The Goop Podcast.

She had to correct the podcast host and wellness guru about how many times she had been down the aisle, to which Paltrow responded: “Oh that’s right, because I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds! Goals!”

Johansson laughed: “Yes, we weren’t married very long,” while adding that they were still very much husband and wife when she first met Paltrow on the set of Iron Man 2.

Announcing their separation, the actress and Reynolds released a statement saying: “After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage.

“We entered our relationship with love, and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.”

Sandra Bullock

Film fans will remember how Reynolds and Sandra Bullock got up close and personal on the set of The Proposal, but it was suggested that they were doing the same in real life in 2011 too.

Rumours began to swirl about the co-stars in wake of his divorce from Johansson, however, the actress quickly shut them down at the 2011 Golden Globes.

While on the red carpet, she said: “I think there will be a collective sigh amongst women in the United States when I say, he’s not my lover, he’s just an amazing friend I’ve had for 10 years.

“And I hope there’s more friendship like that, but I don’t get his loving after dark.”

When asked about her son Louis, who she had adopted the year earlier, Bullock said: “That’s the only man in my life right now.”

Sometimes undeniable on-screen chemistry is just the result of good acting, I guess.

Charlize Theron

Reynolds reportedly also enjoyed another summer fling with the one and only Charlize Theron in 2011.

He was first spotted with the award-winning actress in June that year, with TODAY reporting that mutual friends had set them up.

The Wrexham FC co-owner was said to have known Theron for several years prior to their romance while they were also formerly neighbours.

However, sources claimed they split in August 2011 as they were ‘both too busy’ and ‘hardly every together anyway’.

Months later, he got together with Lively – and so far, they seem to be living happily ever after. Relationship-wise, anyway.

GoPro footage shows gruesome reality of nature after being attached to turtle in a river

The bizarre footage was shared on the Monster Mike Fishing YouTube channel

A couple of YouTubers – for some reason – decided to strap on a GoPro Hero 8 on both a turtle and a fish, and the results were terrifying.

Two dudes from the Monster Mike Fishing YouTube channel decided to stick a camera on some underwater creatures with the hopes of capturing some unique footage back in 2020.

Well, it turned out so unique that it might make you want to turn vegetarian.

This turtle was 'a savage' (YouTube/Monster Mike Fishing)

“We’re gonna strap it on this fish right now, and we’re gonna let them swim around,” one of the guys said with the fish tied to the rod.

After chucking the big orange fish into the water, we got some footage of it swimming around with what one would assume was their friends.

The fish cam footage turned out pretty normal, but the terrifying part came after they stuck the GoPro on seriously aggressive ‘snapping turtle’.

“All right, we got the GoPro on a turtle. We’re gonna send them in the water right now. This is cool. Turtle cam,” they said.

As the camera started rolling however, the turtle suddenly attacked a small fish, fitting its whole head in its mouth.

It viciously bit into the fish and wouldn’t let it go.

The fish was flapping around, and all sorts, but the turtle went full Cobra Kai and showed ‘no mercy’.

“God, savage, that’s savage bro,” the YouTubers said, in shock.

“Bro, he’s showing the fish underwater.

“I’m gonna gently reel the turtle back in. So he swam around, not sure what he captured. Oh, man, he’s chomping on a fish right now.

“This turtle is a savage. All right, so I’m gonna take the GoPro off the turtle gently.”

Deciding to take the camera off ‘Turtle Bundy’ was probably a good idea.

Commenting on the bizarrely insightful footage, one viewer said: “This is so cool. I’ve been watching your channel for two years.”

Another person also weirdly put: “That was the best that turtle put on a killer show!!”

I mean, finding out that someone on the internet likes to watch a turtle eating a fish head shouldn’t surprise me that much.

“I love cooking fish so much. I [caught] a snapping turtle one time and he was big,” a third, possibly even weirder comment read.

Meanwhile, someone else, who appeared to be a fan of the channel, was devastated that they can’t fish in their area, adding: “I love you bro awesome video. Unfortunately here where I live it’s not allowed to fish.”

Director confirms plans for Keanu Reeves to return as Constantine with sequel ‘close’

We’ve got a positive update for the much-anticipated Constantine sequel

Keanu Reeves lovers have waited 20 years for a Constantine sequel and it looks like they could be getting it.

The Francis Lawrence-led film (2005) saw Reeves take on the role of John Constantine, a detective who has the ability to spot angels and demons hidden among humans.

As it seems Constantine is going to hell for a past suicide attempt, his redemption involves exorcising demons with the hopes of a place in heaven.

The likes of Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Peter Stormare, Djimon Hounsou and Shia LaBeouf feature in the first film.

Now, in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Reeves and Lawrence openly discussed the idea of a sequel.

And it’s good news, as Lawrence said there is a ‘real possibility’ of it happening after Reeves told Stephen Colbert in 2021 he’d happily return to the role.

The director of the original explained: “And I think this thing sort of spread, and finally convinced some people that have some control, like, ‘Hey, you know what? Maybe this isn’t a bad thing’.

A sequel is definitely on the cards (Warner Bros.)

A sequel is definitely on the cards (Warner Bros.)

“I think it’s the combination of that and the sort of growing cult following of the original film over the years that have got people thinking like, ‘Okay, we can do this’, even if it happens to be sort of outside whatever a DC plan is for the other material that there is a version of my Constantine, Akiva’s Constantine, Keanu’s Constantine, together that’s outside of that.

“We have finally gotten to the place where we now have the permission to go down that road.

“And Akiva is writing, and Keanu and Akiva and I have been collaborating, and I think we have some really, really great ideas that we’re super, super excited about.

“And I think we’re pretty close on having an object that is really workable.

“All I know is that we’re really excited. And I haven’t felt this excited about the project, and this excited about how real it could be in the 20 years since we made the first one. So it has real possibility.”

Keanu added: “Just reaffirming just how great it is to collaborate with Francis and Akiva on it.

“It’s just fun to be in the same room and talk Constantine.

“Yeah, just everyone riffing and just, you know what Akiva and Francis have come up with, and the ideas.

“I’m aching to play this guy.”

Not to make people jealous, but also during the interview Lawrence showed off a mega ‘Holy Shotgun’ prop.

“Keanu had the prop department make me a real brass,” he confessed.

“But this thing must weigh 30 pounds.”

Frankie Muniz celebrates biggest achievement of new career after going full-time

Muniz hopes he can prove himself to those he works with

Best known for playing Malcolm, Frankie Muniz recently went full-time with a whole other kind of career.

Plenty of fans grew up with the actor playing the lead in Malcolm in the Middle along with roles in the likes of Racing Stripes and Big Fat Liar.

But nowadays, while a reunion looms, Muniz is busy being a professional stock car racing driver. And on Friday (15 January), he had the biggest achievement of his new career.

The 39-year-old was competing in the NASCAR truck series for the fifth time when he had his best finish yet.

Muniz has had a pretty long-running interest in car racing and his career traces back to 2004. However, he took an over a decade-long break after an injury before making his stock car racing debut in 2021.

On Friday, he initially finished 11th in Daytona Beach before being bumped up a spot following the disqualification of fellow racer Parker Kligerman, whose truck ended up being ruled out because of a rear suspension issue.

And it’s fair to say Muniz was pretty made up with even his 11th place finish.

He told NASCAR on Fox: “We finished 11th you know, I couldn’t ask for anything better. I think this truck was so fast. I mean, we were in second pack, I passed all the second pack, had a half a straightaway to the front pack, and by myself, caught them.”

The star said after this he ‘can’t wait for Talladega’, the city in Alabama, where the NASCAR Race Weekend is set to take place on 25-27 April ‘because this truck’s good’.

“I know I have to prove myself here,” the star added.

Muniz explained he ‘didn’t have the opportunity to do that’ last year and says this is a step in him earning ‘respect’.

“I still don’t think they know what I can do or not,” he said of other drivers on his team, “so I want to earn their respect too, and the only way to do that is to do it on the track.”

The star was visibly excited as he reflected on the race before closing with: “Man, it worked out, I’m happy. This was great.”

Sharing snaps from race day on Instagram afterwards, he celebrated finishing tenth place ‘in the first race of my full-time NASCAR season’ as he said he ‘was screaming’.

Of course, while he might now be a full-time racer, he’s still keeping up the acting as he’s set to reprise his role as Malcolm for a Disney+ reboot of the beloved show.

World’s most expensive substance costs £49,000,000,000,000 for just one gram

But it could disappear suddenly

But despite it feeling like you need to take a loan out to cover a night out, it’s got nothing on the cost of the world’s most expensive substance.

And no, it’s not the stuff Demi Moore was hooked on in her first major award-winning role last year.

There is another bit of a film link to the science though, thanks to 2009’s Angels & Demons with Tom Hanks.

The substance in question cost an absolutely whopping £49 trillion for just one gram.

It sounds like the stuff of fiction but it's very real (Paramount Pictures)

It sounds like the stuff of fiction but it’s very real (Paramount Pictures)

It’s not just something you can dig up like precious jewels or metals, as it has to be assembled atom by atom meaning it could take a billion years to gather just one tenth of a gram.

Yep, it’s antimatter which of course became something more of us knew about thanks to the mystery thriller. As the name suggests, it pretty much is like regular matter’s evil twin as just as is seen in Angels & Demons, when the pair meet, they totally destroy each other, letting off a s**t load of energy.

That’s part of what makes antimatter just so expensive to store and study, as it can disappear pretty much as soon as it can be produced.

I mean, the stuff will just explode if it comes into contact with ordinary particles – i.e., anything basically.

Back in 1999, NASA scientist Harold Gerrish estimated the price of this pricey substance to be $62.5 trillion, just based on the energy involved and what goes into having it made.

He did estimate that this mega cost would come down at some point, but scientists reckon it could actually have an even bigger price.

CERN is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory (Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images)

Particle physicist at CERN, Professor Michael Doser, told ABC News: “We make such minute quantities that even if you were to destroy all the antimatter that we’re making in the course of a year, it wouldn’t be even enough to boil a cup of tea.

“One 100th of a nanogram [of antimatter] costs as much as one kilogram of gold.”

While producing antimatter might cost a lot and take a lot of work, it’s widely believed that it holds the key to discovering more of the universe’s several mysteries.

It could be incredibly helpful in fields such as medicine, but again, scarcity and cost of production have proved to be an issue. But thanks to discoveries and advancements in research, there is hope in solving the problems for scientists.

That pint is looking pretty cheap and easy now, right?

Emergency services are responding to an ‘incident’ at Toronto Pearson International Airport

Shocking footage has shown a Delta Airlines plane crash land on its back in Canada.

The Delta Flight 4819, which took off from Minneapolis around 11.47am local time, appears to be flipped over on a snowy runway, according to videos shared on social media.

Emergency services are now responding to the incident at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Paramedics told CP24 that up to eight people were injured, while the Association of Flight Attendants confirmed that there’s been no fatalities.

“Our union is responding to an incident in Toronto with Delta Air Lines Endeavor Flight 4819,” a statement read.

“AFA crew were working this flight. Reports are there are no fatalities.

“Please do not speculate on this incident as everyone works to gather information and support those involved.”

The New York Post has reported that flight records show the aircraft happened to be a Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR.

“There is a plane crash. However, we don’t know the circumstances surrounding it at this point,” added Constable Sarah Patten of the Peel Regional Police in Ontario.

“It is my understanding that most of the passengers are out and unharmed but we’re still trying to make sure so we’re still on scene investigating,” Ms Patten said.

This is the first major incident involving a commercial passenger plane since an American Airlines passenger jet collided mid-air with a US army helicopter and landed in the Potomac river on 29 January.

The Bombardier CRJ700 had departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was landing into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington DC.

Footage showed that the plane collided with a Sikorsky H-60, which had taken off from Fort Belvoir in Virginia, with a US army official confirming to NBC News that the helicopter had been participating in a training flight.

There were 64 passengers on board the plane and three army soldiers in the helicopter. No one survived.

President Donald Trump said it ‘looks like’ the collision ‘should have been prevented’.

He posted on social media platform Truth Social: “The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport.

“The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn.

“Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”

Dame Maggie Smith’s son opens up about heartbreaking final words with his mother before her death

The legend of stage and screen passed away last year

Dame Maggie Smith’s son has opened up about the heartbreaking final moments with her before her death.

The absolute legend of stage and screen passed away on 27 September last year at the age of 89. Smith was perhaps best known to many for playing Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films along with roles in the likes of Downton Abbey, Sister Act, and the Lady in the Van.

With a career spanning eight decades, tributes from co-stars, politicians and royalty flooded in for Dame Maggie upon her death being announced, and her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said she ‘passed away peacefully’.

“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” they added in a statement.

After his mum had encouraged him to go away for filming, Toby has now revealed he was sadly unable to make it to the hospital on time to be with her.

Speaking to The Sunday Times over the weekend (16 February), he explained what happened in their final moments together: “She was in hospital. She was supposed to be coming out, but the last two years of her life had been a decline.

“She would get worse, then she would get better, then she would get worse [again]. So I said, ‘Look I’ve got this film’, and before I could even ask her, she said, ‘Go do it. God, you don’t want to hang round here, I’m fine’.”

The star died just a day before her son finished filming upcoming New Zealand horror film, Marmara. However, her eldest son Chris was able to be with her at the time.

And Toby admitted he also felt sadness in not being able to be there to support him.

“I was so sad not to be with him, I found that very difficult,” he said. “But she was no longer aware – and it allowed me some space to actually get my head round what had happened.”

Toby made his film debut back in 1992 in Orlando and has since appeared as the likes of Bond villain Gustav Graves in 2002’s Die Another Day, Captain Flint in Black Sails, and Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

He added how touched he had been by the response to his mum’s death.

“The thing that really got me was: it’s very rare that you have actors that everyone likes. And she had spent her life not thinking of herself like that, which is very winning,” he said.

“If she had thought of herself like that it would have been ghastly. But she wasn’t like that at all. She had self-knowledge, self-belief. Like most actors, though, she was riven with self-doubt.”

BBC true crime documentary Escaping Utopia explores the Gloriavale cult

Warning: The following article contains discussion of child sex abuse that some readers may find disturbing

A woman who ‘had to watch her mum and dad have sex’ when she was eight years old has spoken on the horrors of being abused in a sick cult.

The cult community, known as Gloriavale, is a small Christian group in New Zealand which was founded in 1969 by Australian evangelist Neville Cooper. He died in 2018.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple reports of sexual, physical, and psychological abuse within the community, which still exists today in a smaller capacity.

It’s since been compared to The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian book and TV series about women being subjected to child-bearing slavery.

Journalist Melanie Reid infiltrated the group in the 1990s and her findings have been included in new BBC three-part documentary Escaping Utopia.

A witness who was eight years old at the time recalled: “We had to watch my mum and dad have sex.

“I just tried not to think about what was happening. I thought that every father was doing this to their children because in the community they were told to invite their children into their room and show them what sex was like between a husband and wife. It became normal to us.”

Neville’s son, Christian, experienced what went on behind closed doors, and he’s now working with an underground network to help people flee various cults.

“My dad started the community and, like a king would, wanted a kingdom,” the father-of-11 said.

“When I told my wife I wanted to leave, she replied, ‘I’m not going to lose my soul.’ I knew exactly what she meant. She meant, ‘I’m not leaving.’

“In a society where women are taught from a very young age that they have no voice and have got to submit, she was like a puppet.

“The leaders there have painted me as a very evil, wicked person who follows the devil. But doing nothing is not the answer. That would just mean these people are never going to get free.”

On how his father got involved with the twisted cult, Christian explained: “My dad was born in 1926 in Queensland. He came to a sort of mental crisis when he was 22 and had an experience where he believed he had met God who called to him to be a minister.

“He had an attempt at setting up a commune in Australia, which failed, then he moved to New Zealand in 1967 to try to get this weird idea he had off the ground.

“He believed that he was God’s advocate on earth and as he got more power he became more corrupt and he ended up with a God-like status and he took to converting people in sexual ways.”

Cooper’s successor Howard Temple is awaiting trial after being charged with indecent sexual assault, with 138 potential victims awaiting the verdict.

Critical moment in history': Protests across US today target Trump, Musk

Opponents of former President Trump took to the streets on Presidents Day, staging demonstrations across the country to protest his sweeping executive actions and his appointment of tech billionaire Elon Musk to a key government role. The protests, organized by various progressive groups, underscored growing concerns over Trump’s governance style and the influence of wealthy elites in shaping policy. On February 17, thousands gathered in major cities, declaring it “No Kings Day” to push back against Trump’s aggressive use of executive orders and his administration’s move to significantly downsize the federal government.A central theme of the protests was resistance to Musk’s growing influence, particularly his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new commission tasked with cutting federal spending.“We are at a critical crossroads in American history,” a joint statement from the 50501 Movement, Political Revolution, and No Voice Unheard read. “We demand that our voices be heard and that the White House serves the American people—not a tech billionaire looking to buy influence.”The demonstrations drew large crowds in Washington, where thousands gathered near the U.S. Capitol, even though lawmakers were out of session for the federal holiday. Protesters held signs criticizing Musk’s role in government, with one banner reading, “No one elected Elon Musk.” Across the country, nearly 1,000 people marched in Boston, while hundreds rallied at state capitols in Texas and California.

“America has no king,” declared Build the Resistance, another organizer of the protests. “Trump and his wealthy allies are undermining the Constitution and tearing apart democratic institutions.”Indivisible, a progressive advocacy group, also joined the demonstrations as part of its “Musk or Us” initiative. In addition to the Presidents Day protests, activists are planning further demonstrations outside lawmakers’ offices and Tesla dealerships to highlight concerns over Musk’s deepening involvement in federal policy decisions.Musk’s appointment as the head of DOGE has been a focal point of controversy. As a special government employee, Musk has gained direct access to Trump’s administration, raising concerns about conflicts of interest and unchecked power.DOGE has aggressively targeted federal agencies, leading to the dismissal of thousands of federal workers. The Office of Personnel Management recently purged probationary employees, while others were pressured into buyout offers under the administration’s “Fork in the Road” initiative.DOGE has also moved to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development, a decision that has sparked fears about the federal government’s ability to maintain critical programs and uphold national security.Privacy advocates warn that drastic changes within federal agencies could lead to breaches in sensitive government data.

The Presidents Day protests mark the second large-scale mobilization by the 50501 Movement in recent weeks. On February 5, the group reported organizing more than 80 protests across all 50 states, drawing an estimated 20,000 participants.Organizers say the growing public response signals widespread discontent with Trump’s leadership and his extensive use of executive power.“We are witnessing an erosion of constitutional rights,” the 50501 Movement stated. “Federal judges have already halted multiple executive orders, yet Trump continues to push forward, disregarding the checks and balances that define American democracy.”The statement also condemned elected officials who have remained silent, accusing them of prioritizing political self-preservation over defending democratic principles. “Many in Congress are paralyzed by fear of losing their positions. But in the face of this crisis, a new wave of unity is rising. Americans from every background are standing together to demand accountability and defend our rights,” the release added. As tensions rise, activists vow to keep the pressure on Trump’s administration. With Musk’s role expanding and federal agencies facing upheaval, protests are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
