The doctor received some pushback despite his warnings

A doctor on TikTok has told people they need to ditch this common cooking habit for the sake of their health.

When it comes to cooking, many people tend to learn from their parents and, as a result, pick up a lot of practices – both good and bad.

Dr Sam, who goes by @drsamuelgp on TikTok, has warned his followers they needed to stop washing their chicken before cooking it as it can increase their risk of contamination.

He noted that he is aware that many people’s parents would have done this and still do this.

Now, while you may have seen odd videos on social media of people doing the absolute most to ‘clean’ their chicken – perhaps in the hopes of removing bacteria – the doctor emphasized that simply using water was enough to cause an issue.

In the video, Dr Sam said: “Why you should stop washing your chicken. I am Dr Sam and this is medical adulting where you will learn interesting medical lessons to help you live your life better.

“Your dad or your mum probably washes chicken or even you, and while most people are not so extreme with their washing, washing with just water alone can be dangerous and unnecessary.

“A study found that people who wash their chicken in their sinks ended up contaminating their salads, and this happened because of several reasons.

Not all of the doctor's followers were convinced by his warning (Getty Stock Image)

“Washing chicken in the sink contaminates the sink, allowing the bacteria from the chicken to transfer to your fruits and vegetables.

“Two, water droplets that contain the bacteria can fly up to 80cm around the sink, meaning things around it can get contaminated.

“Three, most people don’t wash their hands for long enough.”

The TikToker then offered alternative options that people can do instead that are thought to be significantly safer.

Dr Sam continued: “You can pat dry with paper towels and throw them away.

“You can blanch chicken in boiling water and throw the water away.

“You shouldn’t worry about the bacteria because it will no longer be there once you cook your chicken to 75 degrees.

“So wash your hands, not your hen. Because it is not worth it to wing it and then get diarrhea so now you know.”

Despite being a trained medical professional, the doctor didn’t exactly get rousing support from his followers in the comments, with some claiming they would simply clean their sink after washing their chicken.

Donald Trump promised he would be tough on immigration

Donald Trump’s immigration officers have been under pressure to increase their arrest numbers to ensure the President keeps his promise he made to the public.

Ahead of becoming US President for a second time, Donald Trump told his supporters that he would be tough on immigration.

Since taking office, he has seemingly been on job to ensure he keeps this promise, as immigration officers have so far made a staggering number of arrests.

Kush Desai, spokesman for the White House, praised the administration’s quick movement on immigration, and said: “After four years of the Biden administration’s outright incompetence and negligence, the Trump administration has re-established a no-nonsense enforcement of and respect for the immigration laws of the United States.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other law enforcement partners have conducted raids and arrests of undocumented immigrants across the country since January 20.

This has resulted in a very high number of individuals being detained by authorities. So much so that, under Trump, officers could more than double the 113,000 arrests the agency made in Fiscal Year 2024 under Biden.

The spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Tricia McLaughlin, said that in just one month the DHS has arrested more than 20,000 people who have a criminal background.

She added that of those arrested, 22 were known suspected terrorists and 640 were suspected gang members.

ICE initially broke down their daily arrest numbers by highlighting how many people had committed crimes, however, they have since stopped doing this.

On the highest day for arrests that ICE has disclosed, roughly half of those picked up by immigration officers had a criminal background.

Desai also said: “Hundreds of violent, predatory, and gang-affiliated criminal illegal aliens have already been rounded up and deported by ICE since President Trump took office — and the Trump administration is aligned on securing our borders and ensuring that mass deportations are conducted quickly and effectively to put Americans and America First.”

But despite this seemingly unprecedent pace, Trump isn’t exactly happy about the speed of deportations.

A source says Trump is ‘angry’ with the progress being made to deport people, NBC News reports.

So much so, Immigration and Customs Enforcement acting Director Caleb Vitello has since been transferred to a different role, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Politico, with an unannounced replacement set to take the reigns and double down further.

Shocking simulation shows what would happen if the ‘biggest nuclear bomb’ went off in New York City

The video details the mass destruction that dropping a bomb on the US’ most populous city would cause

As tensions between world leaders rise and talk of World War III intensifies, a video has been created to demonstrate just how disastrous nuclear war could be.

YouTuber Zack D. Films has created a shocking simulation that details exactly what would happen if the biggest nuclear bomb ever created was dropped on New York City.

The world’s largest nuclear explosion ever took place in 1961, that of course was the Russian hydrogen bomb called the ”Tsar Bomba’, or as the western world knows it – the ‘Tsar Bomb’.

But it wasn’t until almost 60 years later that footage was released of the huge blast.

Dubbed the ‘King of Bombs’, the Tsar Bomb was developed between 1956 and 1961, while the Soviet Union was in the middle of an nuclear arms race with the US.

It was said to be 3,300 times as destructive as the bomb that devastated Hiroshima, made up of a hydrogen bomb with 50 megatons – or 50 million tons – of explosives.

When it was tested in October 1961, the Tsar Bomb released a mushroom cloud that was 60km high.

Now, the popular content creator Zack and his team put together a short video to explain how it would look if the Russians wanted to drop the bomb on the US’ most populous city. Take a look:

“If the world’s biggest nuclear bomb landed in New York City, the 50 megaton explosion would instantly vaporize everything within a two mile radius,” the video says.

“The blast wave would flatten buildings up to 20 miles away, turning skyscrapers into rubble, and a fireball over five miles wide would ignite everything in its path.

“The shock wave would shatter windows as far as New Jersey and the mushroom cloud would rise 40 miles into the air.

“Radiation would contaminate the area for decades, leaving no survivors in.”

Let’s hope Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump don’t get into a war that leads to one of the two pressing the big red button…

But to know what New York would be up against, let’s detail a little more on the Tsar Bomb.

During the test in 1961, the Soviet Union stationed cameras on the ground and on board two Russian aircrafts which caught the moment the bomb caused a huge fireball in the sky.

“The testing of an exceptionally powerful hydrogen load … confirmed that the Soviet Union is in possession of a thermo-nuclear weapon with power of 50 megatons, 100 megatons and more,” said a narrator over footage of the test which was released in 2021.

Halle Berry was misdiagnosed with herpes after experiencing excruciating pain

Halle Berry has explained how being misdiagnosed with herpes impacted her sex life with partner Van Hunt.

The actor appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show this week, where she discussed a bunch of topics, including her personal life.

The main purpose of Berry’s appearance was to promote her latest project, Respin – a startup which aims to help women struggling with the menopause.

During the interview, Betty candidly opened up on being misdiagnosed with a ‘case of herpes’, which ultimately impacted her sex life.

The 58-year-old said: “When I was 54 years old, I had just met Van. I manifested this man and we were having the best time. I finally met my person and it was amazing.”

Things quickly changed, however, after the Introducing Dorothy Dandridge star felt unbearable pain when she tried to go to the toilet one day.

“I couldn’t go. It was so painful … it took me almost 10 minutes to just empty my bladder because it was so painful,” she said.

“And substances were down there that I had never seen before and I thought, ‘What is this?’”

A speedy trip to the doctors followed, with Berry recalling: “And he [doctor] is doing the exam and looking up there and he said, ‘Yep, uh huh I think I know what this is,’ and I’m like, ‘What?!’ and he said, ‘It’s a really bad case of herpes.'”

While Berry said she and Hunt spent the ‘next 72 hours kind of doing the blame game’, she found out she was ultimately misdiagnosed, though health experts had no clue what was causing the actor’s symptoms.

Berry added: “He said, ‘You do not have herpes’. And I was like, ‘OK then, what is it?’ And this was the defining moment for me, he said, ‘I don’t know, that’s what it looked like’.

“And that sent me on my own reconnaissance and my own researching and that’s when I came up with Dry Vagina Syndrome, that women have when they are in perimenopause. And I had all the symptoms of what that felt like.”

According to Mayo Clinic, ‘perimenopause means “around menopause” and refers to the time during which your body makes the natural transition to menopause, marking the end of the reproductive years’.

One Oscars win even got turned down by an actor…

On Sunday (March 3), the 2025 Oscars are set to take place with heated debate already taking place online as to which movies released in the year have seemingly been snubbed.

But what about some of the most controversial Academy Award wins in history? Well, this week’s UNILAD RANKED presents five wins which faced the most backlash – in order of oldest to most recent.

1973 – Marlon Brando declines Best Actor for The Godfather

Brando won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 45th Academy Awards in 1973 for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in The Godfather however, he didn’t attend the ceremony, instead sending a woman named Sacheen Littlefeather in his place to accept – or rather, decline – the award.

Littlefeather – a member of the Indigenous American group the Apache and president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee – explained Brando was ‘regretfully’ turning down the award in protest of ‘the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry and on television in movie reruns and also with recent happenings at Wounded Knee’.

The Wounded Knee Massacre – also known as the Battle of of Wounded Knee – took place in 1890 and saw around three hundred Lakota – Native American – people killed by US Army soldiers.

Littlefeather’s speech concluded: “I beg at this time that I have not intruded upon this evening and that we will in the future our hearts and our understandings will meet with love and generosity. Thank you on behalf of Marlon Brando.”

1995 – Pulp Fiction losing Best Picture to Forrest Gump

Four Weddings and as Funeral, The Shawshank Redemption, Quiz Show, Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction were nominated for Best Picture at the 67th Academy Awards, but the award was ultimately taken home by Forrest Gump – directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring none other than Tom Hanks.

The win was divisive as many considered Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction bolder and more modern, the film receiving the Palme d’Or and critical acclaim.

On the other hand, despite being considered more mainstream, Forrest Gump was a bigger hit in the box office.

One Twitter user wrote: “I am always amazed when anybody takes the Oscars seriously, for any reason. Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction. That’s all you need to know.”

“It’s not hard to see why Forrest Gump captivated audiences and Oscars in 1995. But “Pulp Fiction” is one of the best written and most revolutionary movies in cinematic history. Maybe Forrest Gump fit the Academy mold. But Pulp Fiction is the true classic,” another argued.

Hanks even addressed the controversy, telling The New York Times in 2022 while Pulp Fiction is ‘a masterpiece without a doubt,’ Forrest Gump’s ‘magic legs’ scene acts as ‘a moment of undeniable heartbreaking humanity’, defending the film as ‘not just running along to Duane Eddy’s ‘Rebel Rouser’.”

2006 – Crash winning Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain

The 78th Academy Awards saw Munich, Good Night, and Good Luck, Capote, Brokeback Mountain and Crash nominated for Best Picture.

Adapted from the 1997 short story by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar who’re hired as sheep herders and end up falling in love.

Their love affair is ultimately made torturous due to the pair being forced to keep their relationship a secret as a result of the intense homophobia present at the time and both marrying their girlfriends.

Despite Lee telling Indie Wire he was told by the stage manager to stick around in the wings – insinuating the film would win the award – Best Picture was ultimately won by Paul Haggis’ Crash.

And while Brokeback Mountain may’ve secured awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score at the Academy Awards, many were outraged over it not also taking home Best Picture – Lee saying he ‘thinks’ it lost out as a result of its centring around a gay love story, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

A Facebook user called Every Oscar Ever wrote: “The fact that Crash beat Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture at the 78th Academy Awards will always go down for me as one of the most inexplicable moments in The Academy’s history.”

Another commented: “WRONGED by a mile…a stolen Oscar was absolutely the truth. The movie was spellbinding, touching and so loving. It was shocking to be topped by Crash. But it did win Oscars for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score. They just didn’t have the guts to honor it as Best Picture – though it surely was!”

2013 – Life of Pi winning Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects

Life of Pi really shook up the 85th Academy Awards and in more ways than one. In a more positive sense, it won a staggering number of awards, however, not just one but two proved controversial.

VFX supervisor Bill Westenhofer’s acceptance speech for the film’s Best Visual Effects award was cut short preventing him from fully addressing the issues within the industry and precarious nature of the job – issues of which only further emphasized when the VFX studio responsible for the film’s visual effects named Rhythm & Hues filed for bankruptcy shortly after the Oscars.

The awarding of Best Cinematography to the film also led to backlash given the film was so largely constructed of digital effects, cinematographer Christopher Doyle telling Blouin News: “I’m trying to work out how to say this most politely, and no offense to – I don’t know [director Ang Lee] personally – but what a total f**king piece of s**t.”

Doyle slammed the film winning the award as ‘a f**king insult to cinematography’, arguing: “What it says to the real world is it’s all about us, we have the money, we put the money in, and we control the image. “

He resolved: “That’s not cinematography […] You’ve lost cinema. This is not cinema and it’s not cinematography.”

Heaven forbid the fallout if – or when – a film which heavily uses AI ends up winning the category…

2017 – La La Land mistakenly announced as winner of Best Picture over Moonlight

The 89th Academy Awards proved controversial not necessarily because of the film which won the award, but as a result of the wrong film being announced as the winner.

Presenter Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were mistakenly given the envelope for Best Actress instead of Best Picture leading Beatty to announce La La Land as the winner when the correct recipient was actually Moonlight.

Moonlight producer Jordan Horowitz quickly hopped on stage to clear up the confusion, but it didn’t stop the incident becoming known as ‘envelopgate’.

As one Twitter user resolved: “The most exciting oscars moment that wasn’t will smith’s slap.”

Other controversial moments include Bradley Cooper losing the Best Actor Oscar to Rami Malek, Shakespeare in Love winning over Saving Private Ryan in 1999 and Chariots of Fire winning Best Picture in 1982.

The president believes the US could flog thousands of these new visas, while even saying suggesting Russian oligarchs are welcome

As President Donald Trump cracks down on illegal immigrants residing in the US, he’s offering migrants with enough money the opportunity to fast-track US citizenship.

On Tuesday (February 25), the Republican revealed plans that to introduce a $5,000,000 ‘gold card’ visa that effectively would grant immigrants with deep enough pockets the chance to legally reside, and work, in America.

The 78-year-old described it as working like a ‘green card privileges plus’ paper, and could be ready to launch within a fortnight.

Now, Trump has touched on the topic again, this time to members during the inaugural meeting of his Cabinet, stating that he is certain he’ll be able to flog thousands of them.

“I happen to think it’ll sell like crazy. It’s a market. But we’ll know very soon,” the president said.

“If we sell a million, that’s $5 trillion dollars.

“I think we will sell a lot because I think there’s really a thirst.”

US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick dubbed the option the ‘Trump gold card’ and slammed the current EB-5 visa as ‘full of nonsense and make-believe fraud.’

The EB-5 visa costs around $20,000, and stipulates overseas investors have to invest around a million dollars into a US company.

“We’re going to end the EB-5 program and we’re going to replace it with the Trump gold card,” Trump told reporters in his Oval Office on Tuesday (February 26).

Lutnick further revealed the ‘gold card’ will be reserved for ‘wonderful world-class global citizens’ and would go towards tackling the federal deficit.

Talking with journalists, he also teased it would offer a unique ‘route to citizenship’ that has ‘never been done before,’ adding: “They’ll be wealthy and they’ll be successful, and they’ll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people, and we think it’s going to be extremely successful.”

“You’re getting big taxpayers, big job producers, and we’ll be able to sell maybe a million of these cards, maybe more than that,” Trump continued. “It could be great, maybe it will be fantastic.”

The president claimed the loop-hole doesn’t need Congress approval, either.

“We don’t need Congress … It’s a path to citizenship, a very strong path to citizenship, but we’re not doing citizenship. For that I’d have to get Congress,” he said.

It would also be open to foreign investors from around the world, meaning it would be open to Russian businesspeople and oligarchs to apply for a gold card, providing they can cough up the $5 million fee.

“I know some Russian oligarchs that are very nice people,” Trump continued. “They’re not quite as wealthy as they used to be.”

GitLab Threat Intelligence, who uncovered the dodgy scheme, stated on their website: “We identified a cluster of at least 16 malicious Chrome extensions used to inject code into browsers to facilitate advertising and search engine optimization fraud.

“The extensions span diverse functionality including screen capture, ad blocking and emoji keyboards and impact at least 3.2 million users.

“The threat actor uses a complex multistage attack to degrade the security of users’ browsers and then inject content, traversing browser security boundaries and hiding malicious code outside of extensions. We have only been able to partly reproduce the threat actor’s attack chain.”

The team of computer experts noted that while these extensions have been deleted from the Web Store, those who already have any of them downloaded will need to delete them manually to steer clear of the hackers.

“The threat actor may also be associated with phishing kit development or distribution. The malicious extensions present a risk of sensitive information leakage or initial access,” GitLab Threat Intelligence added on their site.

Cybercriminals are seemingly using all the right tricks to take advantage of innocent web users, with them receiving targeting Gmail users.

Spencer Starkey, a vice-president at SonicWall, has stated companies such as Google need to be on their toes to ensure their users are safe.

He said: “Cybercriminals are constantly developing new tactics, techniques, and procedures to exploit vulnerabilities and bypass security controls, and companies must be able to quickly adapt and respond to these threats.

“This requires a proactive and flexible approach to cybersecurity, which includes regular security assessments, threat intelligence, vulnerability management, and incident response planning.”

Two Russian tourists were found dead after being swept away while scuba diving

Two tourists were the victims of a brutal shark attack off the coast of Verde Island, Batangas province, Philippines, on Thursday 27 February.

Russian tourists, Ilia Peregudin, 29, and Maksim Melekhov, 39, were part of a diving group that had travelled to the area to experience its marine life and range of corals, and swam near the sea floor to take in everything the environment had to offer.

There were four tourists in total, all from Russia, with one local dive instructor.

After observing schools of fish making their way around the reefs, all five of them were reportedly swept away by powerful undercurrents.

The currents were said to bring them towards some sharks, and while two of the tourists resurfaced with the diving instructor and made their way back to the diving boat, Ilia and Maksim were not as fortunate.

They went missing, and a search was launched by coast guard members and other divers in the area, Philippine coast guard provincial commander Capt. Airland Lapitan told AP.

The Philippine coast guard arrived on the scene after the emergency call at 1pm.

Chilling underwater photos shows the scene just moments before the dievrs were attacked by sharks.

Maksim would be found one hour later, floating face-down and unconscious in choppy waters, with crew calling for first aid.

He was be declared dead in Saint Patrick Hospital in Batangas, Lapitan said.

The commander then revealed: “The other Russian diver [Ilia] was found while being attacked by sharks.

“His right arm, unfortunately, had been severed and the sharks were moving around him.”

He added that ‘they somehow managed to pull him away.’

He too, would be declared dead.

Authorities have stated that an investigation into the incident, with officials set to come up with ways to stop similar tragedies from happening in the area.

Lapitan further explained what they suspect happened: “There was a strong current, and the group were separated.

“Two of them who were with the master diver were able to return to their boat, but the other two failed to resurface.”

He went on: “We had a difficult time recovering one of the divers because there were sharks circling around the body.

“We believe the individual was attacked by sharks because their right hand was missing.”

Diego Reyes is a local that dived with the tourists, calling the incident ‘overwhelming and traumatising’ and that he too felt the strong currents in the water.

“It was really challenging to get back with the group once you got separated,” he admitted.

He concluded: “I hope authorities would be able to figure out what really happened to them. Thank you Lord for keeping our group safe. Rest in peace to the Russian divers.”
