A poor boy who worked at a warehouse near a closed bike shop noticed a scruffy dog visiting the store daily without fail. Curious to see where it was going, he followed it one day and discovered a heartbreaking secret.

18-year-old Chris was a seasoned market worker who had seen his fair share of street animals. But Ollie, a Shiba Inu, was quite different. He was friendly, well-mannered, and too well-groomed to be a stray dog.

When Chris first met Ollie, he found him standing in front of a closed bike shop, just staring at the huge glass panes. Friends at work told him that the dog belonged to the store owner, who suddenly stopped coming to work for several weeks.

Chris was upset whenever he saw the poor dog. He loved canines and was annoyed by how somebody could abandon their beloved pet on the streets and disappear just like that. So one day before heading to the café for lunch, he patted the dog on his head and gently said, “Hey there, Ollie…Want a sandwich, boy?”

From that day on, the curious dog would sprint towards Chris every lunch hour, wagging his tail excitedly at the sight of Chris’s lunchbox. But instead of devouring the snack, the dog would snatch it and disappear with the meal tightly clamped between his jaws…

Watching Ollie dash away with the meal every day and then return to the same spot until closing time left Chris worried and curious. At first, he assumed that Ollie must be having a litter of puppies somewhere and was taking the food to feed them. But Ollie was a male dog, and his unusual behavior didn’t quite add up.

With each passing day, Chris grew increasingly worried as he watched the mutt’s energy fade away. Ollie’s once-glossy coat was becoming dull, and he seemed to be troubled by an unknown source of distress. Chris even thought it could be due to abandonment, but he couldn’t quite put the finger on anything.

“Where is he going with the food without even taking a bite?”

One day during lunchtime, Chris watched as Ollie wagged his tail, excitedly licking his chops at the sight of the sandwich, only to snatch it and bolt away as usual. It left Chris pondering and more worried.

“If Ollie doesn’t have puppies and his owner has abandoned him, then where is he taking the food every day?” he suspected.

“Ollie, where are you going?” Chris called out as he chased after the dog. But the mutt wouldn’t slow down or look back and just disappeared out of the marketplace, leaving Chris in a cloud of dust.

“Weird dog!” Frustrated and confused, Chris shook his head and returned to work, unable to shake the sight of Ollie running off with the food.

Chris’s mind raced with several thoughts of where the dog was going daily, but he couldn’t pinpoint anything.

As Chris finished his shift and stepped out into the frosty night air to go home that evening, he spotted Ollie sitting outside the closed bike shop. The dog’s eyes were fixed on the glass panes, and he let out a soft whine when he saw Chris approaching.

Chris’s heart sank at the sight of the poor lonely dog, who he had grown to care for deeply over the past few days. The bond between the two had grown stronger, and Chris realized that Ollie was more than just a weird dog.

He was a loyal and loving friend who had touched his heart, and the sight of Ollie sitting there, alone and sad, tugged at Chris’s heartstrings. He knew he had to do something to help him.

As he walked toward Ollie, Chris made a silent promise to himself never to let the poor animal feel lonely again. He knelt down, gently stroked Ollie’s head with a heavy heart, and whispered, “You’re not alone, buddy! I’m here for you.”

Chris’s compassion and concern for Ollie pushed him to make a difficult decision — to take the poor dog home with him. However, there was a small problem that stood his way. Chris shared a rented apartment with his girlfriend Mila, who was not particularly fond of pets, especially dogs.

Chris knew that adding a dog to their household was a big, risky move, and his girlfriend would certainly disagree. But he couldn’t leave the poor creature alone on the streets.

So that evening, he silently approached the dog and offered him a cookie before fastening a leash to his collar. Ollie was terrified and tried to break free, but Chris calmed him down and took him along.

Chris’s heart raced with joy and anxiety as he walked home with Ollie. He knew Mila wouldn’t be thrilled about the new addition to their household. But he trusted his decision and was determined to somehow convince her to keep the dog.

With each step, Chris promised himself he would provide a safe haven for Ollie. But his heart sank when he got home and looked into his girlfriend’s furious eyes. Mila was beyond mad when she saw the dog.

“What on earth is this dog doing here?” Mila fumed at Chris when she saw Ollie peeping from behind his legs, staring at her with his big, brown eyes glowing with despair.

“Take that thing away,” she added, stepping back with disgust.

“Babe, he has nobody to take care of him…and he means no harm, okay? Please, can we have him? He is abandoned, and I found him in the market…Just look at him…he’s such an amazing dog, and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with him…just give him some time, babe…please. He needs us…he needs a loving home, and we have plenty of space in our apartment.”

But Mila was too annoyed and stubborn to listen any further.

“Do you want us to wake up to his mid-morning howls gnawing at our brains to take him for a walk, Chris? Are you outta your mind? You cannot just bring any stray dog here…This is not an animal shelter. We have plenty of problems, and we’re already struggling. We cannot have him,” she yelled at Chris.

“And I’m not gonna wake up every morning with a doggie bag in my hand, waiting to pick up fresh, warm poo, okay? And this thing will shed a lot…just look at his thick fur. You know I’m allergic to dogs…and I don’t want to get bitten. Look, I’m not welcoming this dog home, and that’s it. Take him outta here before I….”

“But babe, Ollie is harmless. Just look at him!” begged Chris as the dog softly whined behind him, its fluffy haunches planted firmly on the floor and its tail curled around the paws. Ollie was afraid of Mila’s temper and felt uneasy as he looked at them, arguing in loud voices.

“He won’t bite you. Ollie is such a kind, friendly dog, and everybody in the market loves him. Look, I know you don’t like dogs coz you got bitten when you were little. But that doesn’t mean all dogs are a threat or somethin’… just give him a chance and you’ll not regret it…trust me.”

“See this…if you ask him for his paw, he gives his paw…and if you tell him to roll, he does it… and Ollie up…see, he got up…he’s so obedient, and he’s not a stray,” Chris demonstrated a paw shake with Ollie and other tricks in an attempt to convince Mila to keep him.

“Yeah, whatever! And you know what? If everybody you know loves him, then they can take him home. You’re just wasting your time with this dog. These things are only fit to eat and sleep all the time. Don’t expect me to clear his poo and pee, alright? If you want this dog home, you’ll have to clean all the mess, and I don’t want to see any fur on my clothes. And one more thing…he’s not allowed in our bedroom. I don’t want this dog anywhere near me…I’m warning you, Chris. If he messes up, then he’s outta here.”

Chris was partially relieved that Mila had agreed to keep the dog. As he sat in the kitchen with his new furry friend, he couldn’t help but feel bad. He’d always been a dog person, but Mila’s dislike for canines worried him. To Chris, this dog was more than just a pet. He was his best friend who had tugged at his heartstrings.

Chris had decided to do whatever it took to make things work, even if it meant sleeping on the kitchen floor with the dog for a while, until Mila changed her mind and accepted Ollie.

So that night, he slept in the kitchen with the mutt curled up near his leg, delighted he’d done a good deed by bringing the dog home. But that joy lasted only a night.

“Ollie…hey boy…come here…where are you?” panic rose in Chris’s chest as he looked around for the dog the next morning. Ollie was gone.

He searched every nook and cranny of the kitchen and the apartment, but Ollie was nowhere to be found. The silence was deafening, and Chris’s heart sank, and it felt like he’d been punched in the gut. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing his newfound buddy so soon.

“Did he run away? Did Mila take him away when I was asleep and leave him on the street?” he thought and immediately confronted his girlfriend. But to his surprise, Mila denied his charges and told him she’d not seen Ollie that morning.

“Why would I even think of getting rid of him when you wanted him,” argued Mila.

“Honey, I know you love dogs, okay? And I don’t like them, but that doesn’t mean I’ll get rid of something you love without telling you. You wanted to keep him, and I could do nothing much. I don’t like that dog, but I love you, so that’s why I agreed to keep him. I haven’t seen him since morning…trust me, babe. Maybe he’s run away to where he belonged or something. I told you you were wasting time with that dog. Now it’s your headache to find him. I have to do the dishes, so if you mind movin’….”

When Mila entered the kitchen, she screamed at the top of her lungs. Her piercing scream jolted Chris as he ran inside to see what it was.

“I told you…Now look at what that dog did,” fumed Mila. “He has stolen the steak I’d kept on the table to thaw. You brought home a four-legged thief, Chris, and you better be sorry now. I knew that dog was a nuisance…I just knew it.”

“I’d still buy your words about that goddamn dog’s loyalty if it stole my dumb boyfriend instead of my precious steak,” Mila burst into a giddy laugh, mocking Chris for taking a stand for the dog the previous night.

Chris’s mind started racing as Mila laughed at him over his trust for Ollie. He couldn’t believe that the dog would do such a thing. For a moment, he even doubted if he’d done the right thing in bringing Ollie home.

“Maybe she was right!” Chris was disappointed as he left for work that morning. “I shouldn’t have brought Ollie home…Now she’ll keep taunting me and won’t allow me to bring another dog home again. Thanks for doing this, Ollie…You broke my trust.”

Chris was taken aback when he arrived at the marketplace and saw Ollie standing in the same spot outside the bike shop. The sight of the dog stirred his anger and regret.

As the day fleeted by, Chris was increasingly irritated by Ollie’s behavior and ignored the dog whenever he approached him, wagging his tail.

When lunchtime rolled around, Chris decided not to share his food with Ollie. He was still furious with the dog for stealing the steak and running away, and he couldn’t bring himself to forgive Ollie for betraying him.

Later that evening, Chris watched the poor dog curled up outside the bike shop, looking sad and hungry. Suddenly, somebody tossed Ollie a stale loaf of bread. Chris saw the excitement in the mutt’s eyes as he eagerly grabbed the treat and bolted out of the market, not even bothering to eat it. Fueled by suspicion, Chris decided to follow Ollie to find out where he was taking the food every day.

“Where is he going with the food without even taking a bite?” Chris panted as he chased after Ollie. It had been a little over two hours, but the dog kept trotting without stopping anywhere on the way to have a crumb of bread. Finally, Ollie slowed down at reaching a secluded neighborhood on the outskirts of the town.

“What’s he doing here…this far away?” gasped Chris as he followed the dog to see where he was going.

He then saw Ollie heading toward a house surrounded by several outbuildings at the end of the lane. The house seemed abandoned, and Chris couldn’t understand what the little dog was doing out there and for whom he was taking the food daily.

Chris’s heavy footsteps on the rubble distracted Ollie. But the dog didn’t bother to wait for him. He vaguely wagged his tail and squeezed his petite body through a hole under a chain-link fence, making his way onto the other side of the compound.

“What do you have in there, Ollie?” Chris grew tense as he climbed the fence and landed on the premises, following the dog toward the house.

“Hey, boy…why are you digging under the door?” Chris called out to Ollie again, but the dog was busy pawing a hole beneath the door. The door was locked, and Chris thought Ollie was trying to dig his way in.

Moments later, Chris couldn’t believe what he’d just witnessed. Ollie put the loaf of bread in the small hole he had dug while another dog started barking on the opposite side, scratching ferociously at the door.

Curious, Chris peeked through the window and stood back in shock. On the other side was a big German Shepherd trapped inside the house, devouring the loaf of bread.

“Oh, my God! So you’ve been bringing food for your buddy stuck in there!” Chris gasped as Ollie gently whimpered and wagged his tail, staring at Chris.

Chris heard the German Shepherd barking furiously, and it was clear that it was in some distress. Chris knew he had to act fast and knocked on the door, calling out to the owner again and again. But there was no answer.

“Weird…Where did the owner go, and why is that poor dog trapped inside the house? Who locked him in there?” thought Chris as he rummaged through the surroundings, looking for a clue.

“Hello…anyone there…hello….” Chris called out around the yard, but nobody was there. The outbuildings looked abandoned, and the house itself seemed unlived in for a long time.

Chris understood that the dog had been stuck in that house since time unknown and was in need of help. He tried to find a way inside the house, but all the doors and windows were jammed or locked.

When Chris couldn’t find any other entry points, he decided to call the cops to rescue the German Shepherd and figure out where the owner had disappeared. Just as he finished speaking to the dispatcher on 911, something strange drew Chris’s attention.

“Jesus, what’s that awful smell?” he frowned and covered his nose in disgust at what appeared to be the stench of something rotting in one of the buildings nearby.

Just as Chris marched to the source of the smell, the cops arrived and took charge.

“Officer, I was the one who called…My name is Chris,” he greeted the sheriff. “There’s a big dog trapped in that house, and I think the owner is missing.”

The cops broke open the door, and what Chris saw moments later plucked his heart out and moved him to tears. A huge German Shepherd was brought out on a leash, looking weak and thin due to a lack of food and water. Tears gushed into Chris’s eyes when he saw the dog shakily standing on its paws. It looked like he hadn’t eaten well in days and that the only source of nutrition that kept him alive was the food Ollie had been bringing him daily.

“Hey, Max…hey boy…don’t worry…you’re safe and free now,” said Chris as he patted the dog with a reassuring touch after seeing his name on the collar.

Chris was so furious with the owner for abandoning the dogs in such horrible conditions. And just as he marched to the cops to file a complaint, he saw two officers running around with a crime scene tape toward one of the outbuildings that emanated the rotting stench.

Moments later, Chris’s mouth twitched, and he almost threw up when he saw a man’s decomposed body being carried out on a stretcher. It shocked him even more when he learned that the dead man was the bike shop owner who had disappeared several weeks ago.

“We’re yet to determine the cause of Mr. Lawrence’s death,” the sheriff told Chris. “Sources suggest he was a heart patient who lived alone here with his two dogs. It could’ve been a heart attack, but we’re yet to be sure…And these dogs will be sent to the shelter.”

Chris’s heart throbbed, and he didn’t want to leave the poor dogs alone. He knew he couldn’t abandon them after witnessing their distress and the heartbreaking twist of fate. So he talked to the cop and agreed to adopt the dogs and take them home.

While Max was sent to the veterinary hospital for recovery, Chris took Ollie home with him, knowing Mila would be mad at him again.

“Not again, Chris. I thought we’d lost him,” Mila frowned when she saw Ollie hiding behind Chris’s legs and looking up at her with big, pleading eyes.

To her surprise, Ollie wagged his tail as he slowly approached her. With an eager look in his big coffee brown eyes, the dog extended his paw to Mila. When the soft pads of his paw met Mila’s hand, tears gushed into her eyes. Later, when Chris told her about the encounter that day, her heart melted and she agreed to adopt the two dogs. A couple of weeks later, Chris and Mila were the happiest dog parents when they welcomed Max home from the hospital.

What can we learn from the story?

  • Never abandon your pet because you may think it will survive on its own. The reality out in the world is crueler than you may know. Mila’s dislike for dogs prompted her to disagree with keeping Ollie at home. She tried convincing Chris to leave the dog on the street, back to where he came from, knowing little of the distress the poor dog had endured.
  • There can be nothing more genuine and purer than a dog’s love. Even when those around you might betray you, a dog will remain loyal until its last breath. Ollie was just an ordinary abandoned dog in the eyes of people. Some, like Mila, even doubted his loyalty. But Ollie proved the magic of love and compassion by sacrificing his food to feed his fellow buddy, a German Shepherd named Max, who was trapped in the secluded house.

The Jamaican runner explained why he dined on chicken nuggets during his record-breaking Olympic games

Usain Bolt put his name in the history books back in 2008 when he broke three world records.

Now, if you were unaware of what the 38-year-old had eaten all those years ago, you’d probably imagine he was dining on plenty of fish, bananas and oranges – I’d say beans on toast but that’s the English coming out in me.

But no, incredibly a 21-year-old Bolt incorporated a diet of 100 chicken nuggets from McDonald’s every single day during the Beijing 2008 Olympics where he became a triple gold medallist – before the third was ultimately stripped from him.

On August 16, 2008, he broke his own world record in the 100m he had set of 9.72 seconds just months prior to that.

Having gotten off to a slow start, the athlete kicked it up a gear and stormed ahead by the 50-metre mark before going on to win and set a world record of 9.69 seconds – although he was criticized for celebrating before crossing the line… but can you blame him?

At the end of the race, the world was shocked to find that he did it all with his laces untied.

So why did Bolt have a diet of 100 McNuggets every day during the Beijing 2008 Olympics?

Well, in his 2010 autobiography, The Fastest Man Alive, Bolt explained: “Honestly, I ate nothing else in all my time out in China except chicken nuggets.

“They were the only food I could properly trust which wouldn’t affect my stomach. On arriving at the training camp I’d tried a local Chinese meal, which wasn’t like the ones we we eat in the West, and my body didn’t react well.”

He continued: “So, knowing I could rely on nuggets, I made up my mind that was all I would eat. And eat them I did, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, washed down with bottled water.”

Then in another autobiography, Faster than Lightning (2013), Bolt revealed he did try some local cuisine when he returned to the Chinese capital for the 2015 World Championships.

“Man, I should have gotten a gold medal for all that chowing down,” he wrote.

“They really are providing a lot better food here than in 2008, so no chicken nuggets for me this year.”

Just four days after winning his first gold medal in the 100m, he took part in the 200m (August 20, 2008), and again set a world record of 19.30 seconds but notably didn’t celebrate before crossing the line this time.

Then he finished it off on August 22, 2008, with a gold medal and world record in the 4x100m relay with 37.10 seconds, as he teamed up with Michael Frater, Asafa Powell and Nesta Carter – who would ultimately let his compatriots down.

A urine sample of Carter’s was re-tested nine years later in 2017, and it was found to contain traces of a banned substance.

Sandra Lee: Saying Goodbye to a Dream Home

Lee’s Malibu home, a place she called her “slice of heaven,” was one of many lost to the wildfires. In an emotional Instagram post, she wrote, “I have loved creating it, embellishing it, building it, caring for it, and protecting it.[..] We are all safe but the fire is inching closer to my slice of heaven in Malibu.”

She later wrote, “My house is gone-I cried all night and thought about every room, nook, and cranny. It was perfection, and now it’s just ash.” She reflected on the home’s significance in her life, from the memories it held to the hard work it represented.

“Please keep our community, the firefighters, and the first responders in your prayers. This is not over—not even close,” she urged. As Lee processed the loss, Brad Paisley mourned the destruction of a neighborhood filled with years of memories.

Paisley shared the personal significance of the area, from birthing classes to cherished neighborhood haunts. “So many good people displaced, devastated, and cast out all over LA.[..] It is all so tragic and sad,” he acknowledged the tragedy.

While Paisley mourned the loss of a beloved neighborhood, Mandy Moore shared her heartbreak over losing both her home and the heart of her community.

Mandy Moore: A Community Uprooted

Moore shared the devastation her family faced as their home and surrounding community were destroyed. On Instagram, she wrote, “I love you, Altadena. Grateful for my family and pets getting out last night before it was too late… So many friends and loved ones have lost everything too.”

Oceanographer Dawn Wright explained how the discovery shows the true impact of humans on Earth

More than 6.7 miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean lies the world’s deepest undersea chasm, and in it scientists made a discovery that left them shocked and disheartened.

Oceanographer Dawn Wright was able to get a rare look at the chasm, known as the Challenger Deep, when she traveled in a submarine to the Mariana Trench in the summer of 2022.

Given that this is an experience not many of us will get to have in our lives, it’s easy – and maybe even fun – to imagine what the trench might look like.

Personally, I’m picturing a mysterious cave-like cavern filled with curious fish and colorful aquatic plants, but unfortunately the reality is much more horrifying.

Wright opened up about her experience in an op-ed written for the Los Angeles Times, in which she explained her plans to explore a previously unvisited area of the trench and use high-resolution sonar to create both an elevation model and a visualization that resembled an aerial photograph,

But even before Wright left the ocean, she saw something sitting in the sediment at the bottom.

It wasn’t a fish, an aquatic plant, or even a long-lost shipwreck. It was a beer bottle.

In her op-ed, Wright recalled: “It had traveled more than 6.7 miles to the darkest depths of the Pacific, label still intact. This discarded trash had managed to reach an unsullied part of our world before we actually did — a symbol of how deeply and irrevocably humans are affecting the natural world.”

The harrowing realization that humans really have impacted every little bit of the planet highlighted for Wright the importance of using mapping technology to get to know every nook and cranny of the Earth to help us fully understand not only how it’s changing, but also the impacts of those changes.

With the help of geographic information system (GIS) technology, Wright discussed mapping the entirety of the ocean in detail by 2030.

Having detailed insight to the bottom of the ocean floor is vital, she explained, because it will help us understand the patterns in which heat travels through the water, and therefore how it will affect the water above.

Eventually this water will impact the atmosphere and weather, and Wright explained that knowing more about how this heat cycles through the ocean will help us understand when it fuels hurricanes, which are becoming increasingly intense as a result of climate change.

Aside from sharing what the sister of a deceased Eaton fire victim said about her brother’s death, reports have disclosed the occurrence of other fatalities and the current situation of the California wildfires.

On January 9, 2025, KTLA 5 reported on the death of a 66-year-old man named Victor Shaw, who was identified on Wednesday morning (January 8) as one of the five victims claimed by the Eaton Fire. Tragically, Victor’s family found him lying on the side of the road by their home, with a garden hose in his hand.

The fire victim’s loved ones also confirmed that Victor lost his life attempting to defend their home against the flames.

Adding another layer of sorrow is the fact that Victor’s sister, Shari Shaw, who he had been living with, had tried to get her brother to evacuate with her on the evening of January 7, as the fire got closer to their location.

Reportedly, Victor, whose loved ones say he had health issues impacting his mobility, had told Shari he wanted to stay behind to try to combat the fire when she was running out the door.

Providing a first-person account of the moment to the news outlet, Shari divulged, “When I went back in and yelled out his name, he didn’t reply back, and I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm – I had to save myself. And I looked behind me, and the house was starting to go up in flames, and I had to leave.”

Al Tanner, a family friend, said they found Victor’s charred body the following morning. According to Al, “It looks like he was trying to save the home that his parents had for almost 55 years.”

Expressing her devastation to KTLA 5, Shari said she “fell to the ground” upon learning of her brother’s death, and noted how she was even unable to look at him. “They just told me that he was lying on the ground and that he looked serene, as if he was at peace,” added the bereaved sister.

Victor’s body was still left on his family’s property in the 3000 block of Montrose Avenue on Wednesday evening due to unsafe conditions prohibiting the coroner’s office from retrieving him.

The cause of the 10,600-acre Eaton Fire that claimed Victor’s life has remained under investigation since Thursday morning (January 9), and is one of many active and large wildfires to erupt in the Los Angeles area.

According to KTLA 5, the Palisades Fire is the largest of the lot, spanning a whopping 17,234 acres and having destroyed approximately 1,000 structures.

Meanwhile, the 855-acre Hurst Fire ravaged the Los Angeles neighborhood of Sylmar, while the Lidia Fire damaged at least 348 acres in the Antelope Valley, forcing evacuations as well.

Outside of the aforementioned four, another fire called the Sunset Fire (43 acres) forced rapid evacuations in the Hollywood Hills. However, first responders have managed to make progress concerning relief and rescue efforts for this fire.

Regarding the current status of the active wildfires in Los Angeles (L.A.), the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) shared an update on the department’s website.

All appear to have increased in acreage — the Palisades fire is now 19,978 acres with a containment level of 6%; Eaton now spans 13,690 acres with 0% containment; Hurst’s acreage is 771 with 37% containment, and Lidia sits at a containment level of 75%, spanning 394 acres.

Additionally, CAL FIRE has listed information on another one called the Kenneth Fire, which spans 960 acres and has a containment level of 0%.

“Following recent rainfall that has moderated fire activity, CAL FIRE is transitioning to Winter Preparedness staffing levels statewide. This adjustment aligns with a seasonal decrease in fire activity and aims to strategically optimize resources as fire risks lessen during the cooler months,” reports the department.

They also acknowledge that while California has experienced “a higher-than-usual number of fires this year,” the total acreage burned is still slightly below the five-year average. However, CAL FIRE admits that this figure has exceeded the figures of last year (2024).

Additionally, the department forecasts that below-normal precipitation and above-average temperatures will persist through February 2025, which, unfortunately, will sustain an elevated risk of fires, especially in Southern California.

Adding more fuel to the fire is the increased frequency of offshore winds, which have the potential to exacerbate fire concerns in specific locations.

While the forecast remains grim, CAL FIRE says an active Jet Stream is expected to bring moist and cool conditions over the next several months, which will encourage snow and lowland vegetation in higher elevations.

“These conditions, combined with a shift toward greener fuels, are expected to lower the potential for significant fires over the next 2-3 months,” explains CAL Fire. However, Southern California remains an outlier, as some heightened fire risk may persist.

Despite these seasonal changes and forecasts, the department makes its commitment to remain vigilant and be prepared to respond to issues clear. Currently, there are 13,926 total emergency responses for 92 wildfires that have damaged over 10,000 structures.

“The resources that CAL FIRE staffs year-round will spend these months engaged in fuel reduction projects and other fire prevention efforts as weather permits,” adds the department. It should also be noted that the aforementioned stats and the status of the fires are subject to change as the situation develops.

Although CAL FIRE and first responders continue to do their best to combat the wildfires, several lives have already been claimed by the destruction. Like Victor, others are believed to be dead, as news outlets report that at least ten people have lost their lives to the fires.

The L.A. County sheriff said he expects the death toll to rise, as officials scramble to contain the flames of the unruly fires exacerbated by dry and windy conditions.

As reported by ABC News, “Thousands of firefighters are battling at least five sprawling wildfires spread around the Los Angeles area […] More than 180,000 people have been ordered to evacuate as the infernos spread.”

They also shared that President Joe Biden approved a major federal disaster declaration for Los Angeles County on Wednesday (January 8).

Additionally, CNN reports that Homicide investigators have not yet had the opportunity to process any of the death scenes, as dangerous conditions, such as spot fires, leaking gas, and downed power lines prohibit them from doing so.

On the matter, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department explained, “Once Homicide investigators can assess the scenes, more information will be provided.”

Regarding the number of reported deaths, Sheriff Robert Luna admitted, “Frankly, we don’t know yet,” referencing the ambiguity surrounding the accurate death toll.

At this time, we extend our deepest condolences to Shari, the rest of the Shaw family, their other loved ones, and friends, and others who have suffered losses during this incredibly challenging time.

How to watch once-in-a-lifetime comet visible from Earth this month

How to watch once-in-a-lifetime comet visible from Earth this month

If you don’t fancy it, you can always wait another 160,000 years

Space is full of fascinating celestial bodies and all types of wonders and you might be able to catch an eyeful of one in a few days.

If, for some reason, you don’t know the names of every rock moving through the infinite vacuum of space, then you might have missed the upcoming news.

Comet G3 ATLAS (C/2024) is coming to town and you might be able to catch a glimpse of it. Now you shouldn’t feel too bad if the name doesn’t ring any bells, as it was only recently discovered.

It was discovered in early April 2024 and was the third comet found that month and identified by the facility Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), according to PEOPLE.

As for where it came from, Space.com reports that it’s believed to have originated from Oort Cloud, which is comprised of millions of tiny icy objects estimated to be 10 trillion miles from the Sun.

However, seeing it in the night sky might be easier said than done, according to astronomers.

On January 13, the comet is expected to reach perihelion, which means its at its closest point to the Sun.

At this time, the comet will come within approximately 8.3 million miles of the Sun. The same day, it’s also predicted to reach its closest point to Earth.

This time around, many more people can catch a glimpse of it in the clear sky using rather basic technology, binoculars or a telescope – and if visible, it’ll look like a bright star with a white or golden color, Space.com says.

While both the Northern and Southern hemisphere will have a chance of viewing, the Southern will have an easier time spotting it.

According to the Sky and Telescope Organization, skywatchers in the Northern Hemisphere might have the ability to spot the comet ‘extremely low in the southwestern sky’ from about January 15 to 18.

According to the Planetary Society, some experts expect the comet to come apart as it ventures closer to the Sun, however, new research has indicated that this isn’t Comet G3’s first rodeo.

You should be able to spot it with rather basic technology (Getty Stock Image)

Data reveals that it’s been estimated to be on a approximate ‘160,000-year orbit’, so it’s been on one hell of a journey.

This gruelling orbit also means that it’s likely that the comet has ‘survived at least one close approach to the Sun before.’

While it’s tough to predict a comet’s visibility, Forbes reports that the comet is said to be shining at -4.5 magnitude, which is brighter than Venus.

And while some would interpret this as a bad sign, comet observer John Bortle told Space.com that ‘unusual’ features had been reported, such as a ‘shadow of the nucleus’ which is usually ‘not a sign of disruption’.

“I think chances of its survival are about 50:50.” Bortle added.

It’s worth a shot at least.

After nearly two decades of marriage, Richard Thomas was blindsided when his first wife filed for divorce. But it didn’t take long for “The Waltons” star to open his heart to someone new, with the second chance at love bringing him a “happier life.”

Richard Thomas became a familiar face on television screens during the 1970s, winning over audiences with his charm and talent. As his career took off, he met and married his first wife, and the couple seemed to have a picture-perfect life together — until she blindsided him with a divorce that left him reeling.

Hollywood Success and Finding Love

Richard became a household name thanks to his unforgettable portrayal of John-Boy Walton in the beloved CBS drama series “The Waltons.” His performance as the aspiring writer from rural Virginia earned him widespread acclaim, including an Emmy Award win and two Golden Globe nominations.

After his success on “The Waltons,” he continued building an impressive career. However, it was his personal life that often piqued fans’ curiosity, particularly his first marriage to Alma Gonzales, a romance that seemed plucked from a storybook.

The actor met Alma at a Middle Eastern nightclub called The Fez in Los Angeles, where she was practicing folk dancing. He recalled how he couldn’t take his eyes off her, saying, “She was obviously the best dancer there and I kept ending up with her.”

Their connection quickly blossomed, and the couple tied the knot on Valentine’s Day in 1975. The ceremony was intimate, taking place at Richard’s childhood Baptist church on Manhattan’s Upper West Side — a far cry from the glamorous Hollywood backdrop many might have expected for a TV star.

The bride, born in Los Angeles, studied at a local junior college and dedicated her time to teaching English. While she wasn’t a professionally trained dancer, she proved to be a natural, as her grace on the dance floor impressed her future husband.

After their wedding, the couple spent their honeymoon in New York City, where Richard made sure to treat his new wife to a hansom cab ride around Central Park.

The pair soon became proud parents. In addition to their son, Richard Jr., the couple made headlines when Alma gave birth to triplet daughters: Barbara, Gwyneth, and Pilar. The triplets’ arrival was a surprise for the couple.

Initially expecting twins — a trait that ran in both families — they were shocked when a third heartbeat was discovered during a routine check-up. Richard embraced fatherhood with enthusiasm, playing an active role in raising his children. “I’ve always taken them to school, made breakfast, made dinner,” he shared.

However, despite what seemed like a solid marriage, trouble brewed behind the scenes. After nearly two decades together, Alma filed for divorce in 1992, citing irreconcilable differences.

Richard’s friend, actor Bruce Davison, shared that the former was taken aback by the separation. “He told me that he was shocked that she wanted to separate,” Bruce revealed.

Alma admitted that the decision wasn’t easy but explained, “I guess I shocked him. But if you are really in touch with your mate, you can see things are not right. I wasn’t very happy [in the marriage]. There is no [single] reason why one person’s needs get met and the other person’s do not.”

She further acknowledged that her ex-husband was “a good person” and expressed gratitude that their separation didn’t turn bitter. “[The separation is] amicable, thank goodness, because we have four terrific kids,” she said.

Their kids split their time between both parents, with Richard taking on a hands-on approach to parenting even after moving out of their family home in the Hollywood Hills.

He rented a nearby house to remain close and continued to be actively involved in their lives. Reflecting on the challenges of single parenthood, the actor admitted, “I have enormous admiration for single parents.”

The divorce wasn’t easy for Richard, who admitted it wasn’t his choice to part ways. “[…] At some point, life brings you to your knees, and in my case, it was a painful divorce that was not, N-O, my idea,” he candidly shared.

However, he believed the experience ultimately led him to a better place in life. “But because of it, I was dragged kicking and screaming into a happier life,” he added.

While he rarely discussed the split publicly, the actor revealed that he sought therapy to help navigate his emotional struggles. “I have a wonderful therapist,” he stated.

Despite the heartbreak, he maintained that he and Alma continued to communicate and co-parent effectively, ensuring their children were their top priority. However, little did he know that a new romantic chapter was around the corner.

Finding Lasting Love and Building a Blended Family

After enduring the painful end of his marriage to Alma, Richard never anticipated walking down the aisle again. However, in 1993, fate had a different plan when he crossed paths with Georgiana Bischoff, an art dealer with a quiet demeanor and a passion for creativity.

Their romance blossomed quickly, and within a year of his divorce, the actor was once again exchanging vows. On November 20, 1994, Richard and Georgiana tied the knot in an intimate ceremony attended by nearly 50 close friends and family members.

Richard’s eldest son stood by his father’s side as the best man, while his triplet daughters joined Georgiana’s daughters, Brooke and Kendra, as bridesmaids. The couple then welcomed a boy together, Montana, who completed their family.

In an unexpected twist, Richard’s real-life experience mirrored his on-screen portrayal in “The Waltons,” where he played one of seven children. After marrying Georgiana, he became a father of seven in real life. “It wasn’t planned. I guess seven is my number,” he reflected on the coincidence.

However, when opening up about blending a family of six children and welcoming a seventh, Richard admitted, “Blending a family of six kids and then having our own son — that’s a big job. It causes tension and challenges, but we’ve been able to weather every storm and those complicated parts of life.”

While raising a large blended household required patience and understanding, the actor’s approach to parenting evolved over the years. He believed in allowing his children to grow into their own identities without imposing his own expectations on them.

“Don’t try to make them be like you. Leave them alone,” he said. “I don’t mean let them go out and play in traffic, but let them be free to grow into who they are.”

He also humorously described the complexities of blending families, joking, “Blending a family of this size is like postgraduate work for people who failed the course.”

Meanwhile, Georgiana’s daughter Kendra found her passion in yoga. According to her Instagram, she teaches various disciplines, including meditation and high-intensity interval training (HIIT), but yoga remains her foundation. “Yoga is where it all started,” she wrote in part in a 2022 post.

Kendra also remains close to her family. In August 2023, she shared a heartfelt post about her first trip back to L.A. since 2019. “Some things remain the same, but others have changed dramatically,” she shared. The post included photos of her sister Brooke, who is a mother.

Richard’s youngest child, Montana, also pursued a creative path. Based in New York City, he carved out a niche as a poet and artist, blending humor and emotion in his work.

He also penned a monthly column and curated and hosted a poetry reading series, which gathered writers and artists for intimate storytelling events.

Richard Thomas’ journey from heartbreak to lasting love proves that second chances can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. After overcoming the pain of divorce, he built a strong, blended family with Georgiana by his side.

The dare changed Sam Ballard’s life forever

Doing daft things with your mates is part of growing up but unfortunately for one teen, his life completely changed after one spur-of-the-moment dare.

With just about any group of friends, daring your buddy to do something risky is part of well… being friends and for most they end up being cherished memories, regardless of the outcome.

But for Australian Sam Ballard, this sadly wasn’t the case.

Back in 2010, when Sam was just 19 years old, he ate a slug after being dared to by one of his friends.

Reflecting on the incident, Sam’s buddy Jimmy told The Project: “We were sitting, having a bit of a red wine appreciation night, trying to act as grown-ups and a slug came crawling across.

“The conversation came, ‘Should I eat it?’ [and] off Sam went.”

While the best-case scenario when eating a small creature under these circumstances would’ve been a slight stomach ache and a teachable moment, this wouldn’t be the case for Sam.

Not long after eating the slug, Sam’s central nervous system began to shutdown.

As the invertebrate was infected with a parasite known as rat lungworm, the teen contracted a strand of meningitis, known as eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, which is severe but treatable.

Sam suffered an infection in his brain and fell into a coma in hospital for 420 days.

When Sam did awake from the coma he had significant movement limitations, as he was left paralyzed from the neck down, including all his limbs.

All he could do was control his breathing and eyelids, and his mom, Katie Ballard, became his full-time carer.

The Project host Lisa Wilkinson said Sam was ‘surrounded by his family and loyal, loving mates’ before he passed away aged 29 in November 2018.

Meanwhile, she said his heartbreaking last words to his mom were ‘I love you’.

Jimmy has since cautioned against needlessly reckless acts, even when with friends.

He said: “Just take care of your mates. Before you jump off a roof into pool or dare your mate to eat something stupid. It can have the worst consequences – not only on your mate and the rest of your friends, the rest of your life, just take care of each other.”

Sam’s family, however, have stressed they don’t blame his friends for what happened to him, telling the NZ Herald that the boys were ‘just being mates’.

Speaking at his funeral, Sam’s brother also had a message for his mourning friends. He said: “We don’t want you to feel any guilt about what happened that night.

“Your friendship to Sam was extraordinary.”

Thanks to the courageous efforts of civilians in a Woodland Hills neighborhood, the police have detained an arson suspect in connection with the Kenneth Fire, for which CAL FIRE has provided an update.

Earlier today (January 10, 2025), a Senior National Correspondent from News Nation named Brian Entin reported that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) informed him that the Kenneth Fire is being investigated as arson.

Entin also said police officials have a suspect in custody. Several minutes later, the news correspondent posted a video on X further confirming his initial statement. The video showed LAPD Senior Lead Officer Charles Dinsel speaking to News Nation about the situation.

“What we know right now is that the incident occurred, it started here, and about 20 minutes/30 minutes later, a suspect was detained over in Woodland [sic] Hills area by citizens,” divulged Officer Dinsel.

The reporter interviewing the officer then asked if this meant someone had purposefully started the Kenneth Fire. Charles responded, “At this time that’s what we believe, yes.”

Currently, police officials do not know the exact details concerning the suspect’s intention, but Officer Dinsel made it clear that the location where the incident took place is labeled as a crime scene area.

Apart from reiterating what Officer Dinsel had mentioned during the news interview, Entin updated the public that the Kenneth Fire’s burning acreage sits at 800+ in his caption above the video.

As the police senior lead mentioned, the suspect was apprehended by residents in a Woodland Hills neighborhood. Video footage showing the suspect being arrested by police officers was posted online by a civilian named Renata Grinshpun, who had witnessed the incident.

While speaking to KTLA 5 about what happened, Grinshpun revealed, “We were sitting in the backyard and suddenly, we hear a car come to a screeching halt and the guy is running out saying, ‘Stop! Drop what you’re holding! Neighbors, he’s trying to start a fire! Call 911!'”

Upon hearing the commotion from their homes, neighbors rallied together to corner the man, who Grinshpun said had what appeared to be a big “propane tank or a flamethrower,” and hold him down. This happened after one resident spotted the suspect attempting to light an object on fire behind a car.

“A few gentlemen surrounded him and got him on his knees. They got some zip ties, a rope and we were able to do a citizens’ arrest,” shared Grinshpun.

Affecting the counties of Los Angeles and Ventura, the 960-acre Kenneth Fire began on January 9 around 3:34 p.m., according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE).

Evacuation warnings for the zones between Vanowen South and Burbank Blvd., and from County Lane Road East to E Valley Circle Blvd have been issued, and those with pets or livestock and/or require substantial time to evacuate, are urged to do so ASAP.

On their website, CAL FIRE also notes that evacuations are being updated frequently, and civilians should check the LA City Evacuation Map for the LA City Evacuation Warning area, as the Kenneth Fire rapidly spreads in the West Hills in Los Angeles County.

Regarding the overall situation of the Kenneth Fire, CAL FIRE states, “Fanned by strong Santa Ana winds, the fire threatens nearby communities and infrastructure, prompting swift evacuation orders. Firefighters from Los Angeles and Ventura counties are actively engaged in containment efforts, deploying both ground crews and aerial resources.”

The department also notes, “The challenging terrain and persistent winds complicate suppression activities, necessitating heightened vigilance from residents and adherence to directives from local authorities.”

The Kenneth Fire is only one of the various wildfires that have set California ablaze, as CAL FIRE reports on the impact of numerous others that have destroyed over 10,000 structures and have prompted 13,926 total emergency responses.

Apart from the Kenneth Fire, which has a containment level of 0%, there is the Palisades Fire, which began on January 7 and has burned 19,978 acres with only 6% containment.

The Eaton Fire, which started on the same day as the Palisades Fire, spans 13,690 acres of which 0% is contained.

Meanwhile, the January 7 Hurst Fire has a burning acreage of 771 with 37% containment, and the 394-acre Lidia Fire, which started on January 8, sits at a containment level of 75%.

Regarding the severity and frequency of the wildfires, CAL FIRE highlights that although California has experienced a “higher-than-usual number of fires this year,” the total acreage burned (29,053) is below the five-year average, even though it exceeds the burned acreage from last year (2024).

“Following recent rainfall that has moderated fire activity, CAL FIRE is transitioning to Winter Preparedness staffing levels statewide. This adjustment aligns with a seasonal decrease in fire activity and aims to strategically optimize resources as fire risks lessen during the cooler months,” explains the department.

However, CAL FIRE also acknowledged, “Forecasts indicate that above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation will persist through February, sustaining elevated fire risk, particularly in Southern California. An increased frequency of offshore wind events may also heighten fire concerns in specific areas.”

Although first responders continue to do their best to mitigate the devastation, the wildfires have already claimed lives. According to an update shared by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the death toll has risen to ten.

To make matters worse, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said he expects that number to grow. “I don’t expect good news, and we’re not looking forward to those numbers,” added Luna during a press conference.

People are raving about the new limited series that’s based on a true story

A new Netflix series has been getting rave reviews, with some going as far as giving it a 10/10.

The true crime drama is based on a case involving the murder of a woman and a child in Linköping, Sweden, which sparked the second-largest criminal investigation in the country’s history.

The incident occurred in 2004, and eventually the case went cold as there was no clear motive or suspect.

It wasn’t until 16 years later that a genealogist made some progress in solving the murders.

Starring Peter Eggers and Mattias Nordkvist, The Breakthrough was directed by Lisa Siwe. Discussing the show, Siwe said to Netflix: “Though this is a fictional drama series about a crime, it is, above all, a depiction of a human tragedy – where we place our focus on the victims and the investigation rather than the perpetrator.

“It’s a story about the compassion and care for one another that is needed to move on when terrible things happen.”

The Breakthrough is now streaming on Netflix.
