Blake Lively issued her first complaint against Justin Baldoni for allegations of sexual harassment and a ‘social manipulation’ campaign

Blake Lively has issued another lawsuit against co-star Justin Baldoni for ‘severe and serious emotional distress’.

In December, Lively filed a legal complaint against her It Ends With Us co-star Baldoni, with the Gossip Girl star accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and of instigating a ‘social manipulation’ campaign against her.

The 37-year-old also alleged that Baldoni had attempted to add ‘improvised gratuitous sexual content and/or scenes involving nudity into the film’ as well as making comments about her appearance – with the complaint alleging that he had ‘cried for hours in her dressing room’ because she didn’t look ‘hot’.

Shortly after the release of the complaint, the 40-year-old actor and director’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, responded to the claims made by Lively, calling them ‘categorically false’.

Freedman also addressed rumors that Baldoni was planning a countersue, telling Deadline that it would ‘shock everyone who has been manipulated into believing a demonstrably false narrative’.

And now as we enter into 2025, it has been revealed that the Green Lantern star has filed another lawsuit – however, this time Lively is claiming ‘punitive’ and ‘compensatory’ damages for the ‘severe and serious emotional distress’ and she’d allegedly experienced as a result of the defendants.

The formal complaint was made on New Year’s Eve (December 31), with Lively claiming Baldoni had worked with his publicist Jennifer Abel and crisis PR Melissa Nathan to ‘destroy’ her reputation.

Wayfarer Studios, the company Baldoni co-owns, were also named in the lawsuit.

Lively’s lawyers told The Daily Mail: “Earlier today, Ms. Lively filed a federal complaint against Wayfarer Studios and others in the Southern District of New York.

“Ms. Lively previously sent her California Civil Rights Department Complaint in response to the retaliatory campaign Wayfarer launched against her for reporting sexual harassment and workplace safety concerns. Unfortunately, Ms. Lively’s decision to speak out has resulted in further retaliation and attacks.

“As alleged in Ms. Lively’s federal Complaint, Wayfarer and its associates have violated federal and California state law by retaliating against her for reporting sexual harassment and workplace safety concerns. Now, the defendants will answer for their conduct in federal court.

“Ms. Lively has brought this litigation in New York, where much of the relevant activities described in the Complaint took place, but we reserve the right to pursue further action in other venues and jurisdictions as appropriate under the law.”

Baldoni has since also filed a lawsuit of his own against The New York Times for libel and false light invasion of privacy.

He is one of ten plaintiffs in a $250 million lawsuit against the publication, which claims The New York Times had ‘cherry-picked’ and ‘altered communications stripped of necessary context and deliberately spliced to mislead’.

Freedman told Variety that the publication had ‘cowered to the wants and whims of two powerful ‘untouchable’ Hollywood elites, disregarding journalistic practices and ethics once befitting of the revered publication by using doctored and manipulated texts and intentionally omitting texts which dispute their chosen PR narrative’.

In response, a New York Times spokesperson said: “The role of an independent news organization is to follow the facts where they lead. Our story was meticulously and responsibly reported. It was based on a review of thousands of pages of original documents, including the text messages and emails that we quote accurately and at length in the article.

“To date, Wayfarer Studios, Mr. Baldoni, the other subjects of the article and their representatives have not pointed to a single error. We published their full statement in response to the allegations in the article as well.

An arrogant rich man is made to have a change of heart after he comes across something unexpected one day—he visits a grocery store and discovers his teenage son mopping the floors.

It was a terrible, terrible day when Adam, 16, returned home from school. He was drenched from the heavy rain that afternoon, but despite his dislike for rain, Adam was in a good mood.

“Those clothes are gonna make you sick, young man. Call the driver the next time,” said his father, Steve, as the young boy entered the house.

“It’s fine, Dad,” Adam said cheerfully. “I met this really nice guy at school, and he helped me today… I gave him my umbrella because he didn’t have one.”

“Help yourself before you can help others, Adam!” Steve said. “I don’t appreciate you coming home like this!”

“Relax, Dad! He stood up to the bullies to help me. This was the least I could do for him! His name is Kevin. He’s a nice guy.”

Sometimes, young minds understand life better than us older folks.

Kevin—that name seemed familiar to Steve. In fact, he knew exactly who it could be. And he was correct.

Steve learned Kevin was his ex-employee Patrick’s son. Patrick was fired from his job after he tried to steal money from the company.

Steve was enraged when he discovered Kevin was attempting to get close to Adam, so he warned Adam to stay away from him.

“That boy is using you, Adam!” said Steve. “His father used to work for me. He tried to steal money and was fired! I was kind enough not to hand him over to the cops, alright? You better watch out, boy!”

“Dad,” countered Adam. “That’s got nothing to do with Kevin. I don’t blame him for what his dad did. Come on! That’d be insane!”

“Son,” his father said as calmly as he could. “You know very little about how the world works and have no idea how people can use you to their advantage. Keep your distance from that man’s son! That’s all!”

But Adam didn’t do that. Despite his father’s warnings to avoid Kevin, he remained friends with him.

One day, Adam invited Kevin to a movie after school, but Kevin declined.

“I’m sorry, Adam, but I can’t come!” Kevin exclaimed.

“But why? You were so excited when we first discussed it!”

“I don’t know… I changed my mind, I guess.”

“Hey dude, tell me if something’s bothering you. Maybe I can help?” offered Adam.

“Actually, you can,” Kevin said. “Let’s call it quits as friends, Adam. I don’t want to be your friend. Sorry,” and Kevin left.

Adam didn’t understand why Kevin suddenly wanted to end their friendship, so he skipped the movie that afternoon and followed Kevin home.

“I’m not leaving until you tell me the reason, Kevin!” Adam confronted him. “Be honest. Does this have anything to do with my dad? Did he come to meet you?”

Kevin sighed. “It has something to do with both of our dads. It’s better if you stay out of it, Adam. Really.”

“Cool, I’ll do it if you say so,” Adam said. “But only if you tell me the story behind all of this. Look, I know what your dad did at my dad’s office, and—”

“You don’t know everything,” said Kevin. “I lost my mom because of what happened.”

“You what?” asked Adam, shocked.

Kevin nodded in tears. “Dad really needed that money for Mom’s surgery. She had some heart disease. Dad worked extra shifts but couldn’t afford the required amount, and we didn’t have any insurance. So he… look, I know what he did was wrong. Dad tried to steal money for Mom’s surgery, and he was caught. He was fired, and now we’re struggling.”

“Mom died. Dad was injured in an accident at the factory where he worked. And now he needs surgery. Otherwise, he’ll be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. But we can’t afford the surgery, and I don’t know what to do. Now you know what happened, so please leave! Dad’s coming home from the hospital today… I don’t want him to see you here. Your dad hates my dad, so it’s just better if we end our friendship. Sorry.”

Adam quietly left Kevin’s house, but he couldn’t bear to see his friend in trouble. He knew what Kevin’s father had done was wrong, but he had to help his friend, so he decided to collect money secretly and help Patrick and Kevin.

A few days later, Adam took a part-time job at a grocery store. He worked as a cleaner there, mopping the floors and cleaning the counters and aisles.

At home, he didn’t tell the truth to anyone. Everyone thought he was out with his friends playing basketball. But lies have a way of getting out, and Adam would be in big trouble soon.

When Steve went to the grocery store one day, he was shocked to see his teen son mopping the floors.

“Adam!” he yelled angrily. “What exactly are you doing here? Why are you cleaning the floors, for Christ’s sake? Did you just lie about that basketball thing?”

“Dad?” stammered Adam. “I—I was just trying to help!”

“You better come with me right now!”

Steve dragged Adam out of the grocery store to his car and began yelling at him.

“Is this where you practice basketball with your imaginary friends?” he asked furiously. “What is going on? I don’t think you need to work here to pay for your expenses!”

“I am helping Kevin, Dad,” said Adam. “His dad needs my help, and I—I don’t want to repeat your mistakes!”

A confused and angry Steve didn’t understand what Adam meant until the young boy shared Kevin’s story.

“….and so he needs my help, Dad,” said Adam. “His dad can’t walk again if he doesn’t get the surgery done. We can help him, Dad, and by choosing not to, we’d be wrong on our part. Just like his dad was wrong when he tried to steal that money. Two wrongs don’t make a right, Dad. I wanna do the right thing on my part!”

After listening to his young son’s mature words, something inside Steve shifted. He looked at Adam and realized he had been so consumed in his anger that he’d completely forgotten he was first a human, then a boss.

“You’re right, Adam,” Steve said after giving his son’s words some thought. “Thanks for making me realize I was wrong. You don’t need to work here. I have an idea to help your friend!”

That day, Adam and Steve visited Kevin’s house, and Adam gave him an envelope.

Kevin didn’t accept it at first. In fact, he was angry and tried to chase Adam and Steve away from the doorstep, but Patrick intervened.

“Kevin, that’s no way to treat guests! I’m sorry, Steve, come in…”

Steve placed the envelope on their living room table and said, “I was heartless to not consider your situation, Patrick. Maybe if I had been more considerate, you wouldn’t have done what you did, and you wouldn’t have lost your wife. I feel bad, and I want to do this.”

But Steve somehow talked Patrick into accepting the envelope, which contained money to cover the surgery, and insisted that Patrick get the surgery done.

“Two wrongs don’t make a right, Patrick. My son taught me that! Our boys are not kids anymore! I think they understand the world better than we did when we were their age!”

And yes, they did. So putting everything behind them, they became friends again. Best friends.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Sometimes, young minds understand life better than us older folks. Adam’s wise words made Steve realize how wrong he’d been to let Patrick suffer after knowing he was in trouble, and he made amends for it.
  • True friends stick together through thick and thin. Kevin and Adam became friends without caring about each other’s background and status, and they stayed friends forever.

Huge crowds gathered at Centenary Square under the promise there would be fireworks

Thousands of people say they were ‘scammed’ after being lured to watch a New Years Eve fireworks display that never happened.

As millions around the world gathered to countdown to midnight and marvel at spectacular fireworks displays to usher in the arrival of 2025, thousands in Birmingham city centre had their night of celebrations snatched away.

According to British media reports, scammers on social media lured thousands of people to Centenary Square last night under the guise of fireworks, only for police officers to turn crowds away after midnight.

Photographs show dozens of revellers wrapped up warm and ready for the show to start before West Midlands Police announced there would be nothing to see and they had fallen victim to fake news.

Posts on social media, reportedly driven by artificial intelligence, gave the impression that a huge display was planned just after midnight in the city centre.

The police had issued warnings earlier that day to address the rumors but were outnumbered by a swarm of people on the night.

When the clock struck midnight, some people reportedly cheered and one lone firework was let off in the crowd, but no organised display went ahead.

Birmingham has not held an official fireworks display for the past decade.

West Midlands Police said in a statement online: “We’re aware of speculation of a New Year’s Eve fireworks display taking place in Birmingham’s Centenary Square tonight – but we can confirm this is not the case.

“We don’t want people travelling unnecessarily into the city centre tonight to be left disappointed after discovering the event isn’t taking place.

“Thousands of revellers will be coming into Birmingham to enjoy the celebrations at bars and venues across the city and that’s why we will have a large visible presence in the city to ensure celebrations go smoothly.”

Birmingham Superintendent, Emlyn Richards, added: “There are rumours online that a fireworks display will take place in Centenary Square but there isn’t a planned event this year.

“We don’t want people travelling into the city to be disappointed when they arrive and discover this is the case.

“There will be thousands of people travelling into the city to enjoy themselves at venues across the city.

“We will be visible on the streets tonight to ensure everything runs smoothly and people have a wonderful evening.”

Although dozens of Brummies were sent home disappointed, crowds across the UK basked in countless organized events and millions were left stunned by London’s infamous animations that lit up the River Thames.

The display also featured a first-ever Paddington Bear cameo appearance in the London Eye as well as other British icons and nods to special events that took place over the course of 2024.

Elsewhere, however, the stormy weather forced some major cities and venues to cancel, including Edinburgh, Blackpool, Newcastle, Ripon in North Yorkshire, and the Isle of Wight.

The actor, born on October 18, 1987, grew up in Arroyo Grande, California, and got into acting at 11 when his parents noticed he could sing. His acting and singing lessons led to his role in a “Gypsy” production that got him hooked on the craft.

He’d started allowing his beard to grow and wore a suit, tie, and scarf. In 2012, he starred in “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.” His jaw didn’t look different the following year when he was seen at an event.

Zac Efron in 2013

On September 6, 2013, Zac’s hair had grown more and styled differently, and the mustache and beard were gone. He showed off his new look at the Tiff Film Festival for “Parkland” at The Roy Thomson Hall Theatre.

On January 21, 2014, Zac started the year by appearing on season 63 of the “Today” show. His appearance looked normal as did his chin. That same year, he also starred in “Neighbors.”

The awards were held at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on April 13, 2014, in Los Angeles, California. The following years were tough on the actor who struggled with medical problems.

Zac Efron in 2016 and 2017

In one article, Zac opened up about some of the health issues he battled between 2016 and 2017. Besides living a life where he had to take diuretics, at one point, the actor was eating the same three meals daily. He also wasn’t getting enough sleep and was overtraining.

If filming finished at midnight, the star would wake up at 4 a.m. to exercise. Before shooting 2017’s “Baywatch,” the actor who appeared in 2016’s “Dirty Grandpa” was excited about doing the action franchise, but the recovery from it was tough.

The actor confessed and warned others that getting a “Baywatch” body was devastating, and the ill effects of his training lasted long. He admitted to developing insomnia and then becoming depressed for a “long time.” Zac said something about working on the movie “burned” him out.

He struggled to recenter himself and blamed what went wrong on taking too many diuretics for a long period. Only six months after he wrapped filming did he finally start feeling like himself. In 2018, Zac started growing his facial hair again and by the end of the year, he was rocking a mustache and beard.

In 2019, the celebrity had another go at changing his appearance by altering his hair color. His new look didn’t last very long and is something to remember.

On January 26, 2019, Zac was seen at The IMDb Studio in Acura Festival Village. At the time, he was on location at day two of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Two years later, the “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” star spent time posing with different animals in Australia. He was content with his looks until he changed things up at the end of the year.

On March 18, 2021, Zac posted two images of himself on Instagram. He revealed he was on Kangaroo Island in Australia. In the first image, he cradled a Joey, a baby kangaroo, and in the second one, someone else held the animal while the actor posed beside them.

The following month, the celebrity shared another picture of himself carrying an animal in Australia. This time he was holding a Tasmanian devil and using a play on words, he jokingly called it the “Devil down under.” At the time, he was shooting his series “Down to Earth with Zac Efron.”

Zac ended the year off with a bang by growing out a mustache. He was seen with it while wearing a cap at the UFC 269, Neal versus Ponzinibbio match on December 11, 2021. The star was photographed while seated in the audience in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Throughout 2022, the actor had different looks. He went shaven and with a mustache, but by the end of the year, the former look appeared to win. The star also kept his hair short.

In April 2021, Zac appeared on Bill Nye’s Facebook Watch to promote his “Earth Day Musical.” That was the first time that fans noticed he looked different. Seeing how different his jaw looked, netizens wondered if the actor had cosmetic surgery.

In an interview, the star explained that in 2013, he injured his face and had to get his mouth wired shut. In the past, he’s also broken his wrist, torn his ACL, thrown his back out, and dislocated his shoulder.

His facial injury occurred while he was running through his house wearing socks. Zac revealed that he slipped into a puddle of water he hadn’t seen near the entrance of his home. He landed on his face on the corner of the granite fountain before losing consciousness.

When the actor awoke, his chin bone was broken, and he had a gash that needed stitches. The celebrity then shared that he’d been getting physical therapy to help rehabilitate his injury. Because his facial muscles work in unison, his masseter muscles, used for chewing, had to overcompensate for the others who were ailing.

While in Australia, he stopped the facial treatment for some time. This happened to coincide with the time when he recorded Nye’s special. Zac Efron explained why he’d looked so different, stating, “The masseters just grew,” adding, “They just got really, really big.”

The actor wasn’t aware that netizens were talking about his jaw until his mother called him. She asked him if he’d gotten plastic surgery. Luckily, he isn’t the type to read what the internet says or allow online gossip to affect him badly.

Zac started 2022 with his mustache. He was seen with it on January 7, 2022, while on set filming “AT&T’s Life, Gig-ified” event in Santa Clarita, California. When he appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” the mustache was gone.

On January 14, 2023, Zac posted twice on his Instagram account. The first image was on his mother whom he kissed on the cheek. He revealed it was her birthday and called her his number one. The celebrity said his mother’s “love and support” made him who he is.

Zac noted how much respect and admiration he has for professional wrestlers, their world, sacrifices, and dedication. He said they toured for months and put their bodies on the line daily to perform. It was an honor for him to learn from the best, Chavo Guerrero Jr.

For Valentine’s Day that year, Zac appeared in an Instagram post with a little child. It seemed like he was reading the child a story while going topless on the couch. His muscles were on full display, showing off the work he’d put into it.

In June, fans had another glimpse into the actor’s private life. Taking to Instagram, he posted a fun picture of him carrying two small children. the trio appeared to be at a theme park.

His body was on display again in October when the “The Iron Claw” trailer was released.

In December, Zac attended the movie premiere at the DGA Theater Complex in Los Angeles, California. His jaw looked a bit different during this occasion.

That same month, the celebrity was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Taking to Instagram, he shared several pictures of himself posing with his star. He called it an “honor” to receive the star and thanked everyone who attended.

He stated, “It was a truly a humbling moment for me surrounded by those I love.” One of the people Zac mentioned and who appeared alongside him in one of the photos was “The Bear’s” Jeremy Allen White.

In 2024, Zac had netizens talking when they noticed something different about him. After watching his 2024 Netflix romantic comedy, “A Family Affair,” fans started questioning the actor’s appearance. In the movie, the 36-year-old’s jaw looks wider, and his facial features also look altered.

Replying to a publication that covered Zac’s story about his face, one reader said, “He’s beyond recognition. He has crossed the line.” Another person stated, “He has spoilt his good looks; he was so handsome.”

Someone else lamented“He ruined his looks,” before likening him to another “Baywatch” alumnus, saying Zac’s “David Hasselhof (sic) 2.0 now.” A person who’d seen the changes in the actor before shared“I was stunned by his face when I watched him in ‘The Iron Claw.'”

And complained, “So many of these good looking actors do this, and I can’t understand it. My theory is that it’s part of the deal they make when they sell their souls.” The person continued, “I especially think that about [Nicole] Kidman, look how many movies she is in.”

Their lengthy post concluded, “You don’t get to that level without compromising yourself. I personally do not buy the ‘I slipped in my socks’ story.” Some who noticed the change said, “His face does look different yet he also looks about 46, so if he wanted to age 10 years then he’s gone the right way about it.”

A reader who was shocked by what they saw judged Zac and his “A Family Affair” co-star, Nicole Kidman. The person wrote, “Can’t believe he’s only 36, looks far older than that, and what on earth has Nicole Kidman done to her face, no movement in it whatsoever. Plus she’s far too thin, just no shape at all.”

Someone who also criticized both stars seemed to focus more on Kidman. They remarked“Both Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman’s faces were totally different. It was the most notable thing in the film. Nicole’s face hardly moves.” In the past, Zac has explained why his face looks so different.

He wouldn’t be in the entertainment industry if he allowed it to. Zac noted, “If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work.”

Instead, he felt the plastic surgery rumors were “funny,” but seriously noted that the accident nearly killed him. In May 29, 2024, the trailer of “A Family Affair,” was released on YouTube, and Zac’s face was obviously different in the scenes.

In January, his fans got a proper look at his changed looks. His jaw and chin looked enlarged when he attended the National Board of Review Awards Gala on January 11, 2024, in New York City.

March saw the star posting a thrilling clip on social media; showing off the muscle mass he has. He uploaded a video of him and his sister enjoying the water at a beach. He was seen kissing her cheek as he celebrated the “First day of spring.”

In June, the celebrity’s jaw and changed looks were on display. At the time, he was attending the premiere of “A Family Affair” on June 13, 2024, in Los Angeles, California.

The star had grown his beard and mustache to cover his jaw and mouth. Zac looks quite different from what he looked like when he was still a young boy and teenager, and the biggest change is his muscle gain.

Travis Barker's daughter Alabama issues statement after rumors she was rushed to hospital over 'nicotine withdrawal'

Alabama Barker took to Instagram to respond to the speculation

A TMZ report published on Monday (December 30) claimed the 19-year-old was taken to hospital in the Los Angeles area as a result of ‘nicotine withdrawal’.

The report went on to allege that Alabama – who is the daughter of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler – quit vaping around a month ago and called 911 after feeling unwell on her own one day.

Alabama has now issued a response to the speculation in an Instagram Story post that has since been deleted.

“I just want to clarify that I was not in the hospital this month or last. The situation occurred some time ago,” she told her 2.1 million followers.

“And I was there for about three hours before being discharged.”

The teen continued: “They provided me with a nicotine patch and an inhaler, and that’s all. Let’s please avoid spreading any rumors and focus on moving forward. Thank you.”

On Thursday (December 26), Alabama took to TikTok to reveal she was feeling under the weather with the flu.

Two days prior on Christmas Eve, she celebrated her 19th birthday.

“I have not been okay. On my birthday, I didn’t even get to enjoy it because I was so sick,” Alabama said in the video.

“But I am back on my feet, and I really want to give you guys a Christmas haul.”

Last year, Alabama explained just how her father parents her to her fans in a surprising quiz.

Posting a video to her TikTok page, she insisted her dad – who welcomed son Rocky with wife Kourtney Kardashian in 2023 and also shares son Landon and stepdaughter Atiana with his ex-wife Shanna – had ‘strict but not strict’ rules regarding her wellbeing.

“I’m asking my strict but not strict dad hypothetical questions,” Alabama told her followers.

“What would you do if I went out with a boy and I just completely stopped answering you?” she asked Travis, who was sitting behind her.

The musician said: “I would come to your location, and I would find you.”

“Am I allowed to have guy friends over? Am I allowed to close my door with a guy in the room?” Alabama then asked.

Travis answered: “[A guy can come over] If I am. Not without me coming in the room and checking on you.”

When asked whether his daughter was allowed to drive to a guy’s house late at night, he sternly answered ‘no’ as Alabama simply laughed.

Elsewhere in the video, Travis gave some pretty well-rounded answers – firm but protective with a willingness to explain why he had the rules.

Husband Gifted Me a Mop on Our 10th Anniversary as His Sister Laughed – Moments Later, Karma Restored My Faith in Goodness

Ten years of marriage reduced to a $9.99 cleaning tool when my husband gifted me a mop on our anniversary. His gift left the room in shock and his sister cackling. Moments later, both learned the true cost of their cruel joke when karma delivered its unexpected blow.

It was our 10th anniversary, and my husband Carl had thrown an extravagant party. A celebration of love, he’d called it. But as I stood there, a plastic smile frozen on my face, I couldn’t help but feel cold dread in the pit of my stomach…

“Mary, darling!” My sister-in-law Anita’s shrill voice cut through the chatter. She sashayed towards me, waving her wrist in the air. The gold bracelet my husband Carl had given her last month glinted mockingly.

“Isn’t this party just divine? Carl really outdid himself!”

I forced my smile wider, feeling it crack at the edges. “It’s wonderful,” I lied through gritted teeth.

Anita leaned in close, her breath reeking of expensive champagne. “I can’t wait to see what he’s gotten you,” she stage-whispered. “It must be spectacular to top this little trinket,” she jangled the bracelet again.

Before I could respond, Carl’s booming voice silenced the room. “Everyone, if I could have your attention please!”

My heart raced as he made his way towards me, a large, gift-wrapped box in his hands. This was it, the moment I’d been anxiously awaiting all night.

“Mary, happy anniversary, sweetheart!” Carl announced.

With trembling hands, I took the box and tore off the wrapping paper. The room held its collective breath as I lifted the lid. And then… silence.

Inside the box was a MOP. Brand new, gleaming white plastic.

For a moment, I thought I must be dreaming. But then Anita’s hyena-like cackle shattered the silence, and reality came crashing down.

“What… what is this?” I stammered, looking up at Carl.

Anita’s laughter grew louder. “Oh, Carl! What a lovely gift for your lovely wife!”

I gripped the mop handle tightly, my knuckles turning white. “Is this some kind of sick joke?”

“Of course, it is,” Carl chuckled. “The real gift is coming later.”

But I saw the truth in his eyes. This was no joke. This was how he saw me… his personal MAID.

“Tell me now. What’s the real gift, Carl?”

“I… well… it’s a surprise.”

Anita’s cackling reached a fever pitch. “Oh, this is too good! Mary, darling, don’t look so glum. At least now you have the right tool for the job!”

Something inside me snapped. Ten years of resentment, of feeling invisible and undervalued, boiled over in an instant. Without a word, I spun on my heel and marched toward the front door.

“Mary?” Carl called after me. “What are you doing?”

I ignored him, pushing past shocked guests until I reached the driveway. There sat Carl’s prized sports car, the one he spent more time with than me.

“Mary!” Carl’s voice was frantic now. “Stop!”

But I was beyond stopping. With all my strength, I swung the mop handle into the windshield. It shattered with a satisfying crash.

Gasps erupted behind me. Carl’s face drained of color as he ran towards his beloved car.

“What the hell?!” he screamed.

I tossed the mop at his feet, my voice eerily calm. “Happy anniversary to you too, darling. I hope you enjoy your gift as much as I enjoyed mine.”

I stormed back into the house, shoving past gawking guests. Anita’s laughter had finally died, replaced by scandalized whispers.

“Did you see that?”

“She’s gone mad!”

“Poor Carl…”

I slammed our bedroom door behind me, my entire body shaking. How had we ended up here? When had our relationship turned into… this? 😔💔

Suddenly, a loud crash from outside made me jump. I peered out the window and gasped. Karma had worked its magic.

One of the heavy concrete planters had mysteriously toppled over, landing squarely on Carl’s precious car. The hood was caved in, and the once-pristine paint job was ruined beyond repair.

A hysterical giggle bubbled up in my throat. Karma, it seemed, worked in mysterious ways. But it wasn’t done yet.

I made my way downstairs, drawn by raised voices. Anita was in the hallway, her face contorted with rage as she screamed into her phone.

“What do you mean my account is frozen?! This has to be a mistake! I need access to those funds immediately!”

She paced frantically, her earlier smugness evaporating like morning dew. “No, you don’t understand. I have payments due. Important people are expecting their money. You can’t do this to me.”

I caught Carl’s eye across the room. He looked shell-shocked, glancing between his distraught sister and me. For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

Just then, an old family friend, Linda, approached me hesitantly. “Mary,” she said in a low voice. “There’s something you need to know.”

My stomach clenched. “What is it?”

Linda glanced around nervously before continuing. “I… I overheard Carl talking last week. He’s been meeting with a divorce lawyer.”

The floor seemed to tilt beneath me. “What?”

Linda nodded grimly. “I’m so sorry, Mary. I thought you deserved to know. He’s had papers drawn up and everything.”

The pieces clicked into place with sickening clarity. The mop wasn’t just thoughtlessness… it was a message. He wanted to humiliate me, to make me feel small before dropping the final blow.

“Thank you for telling me, Linda,” I said, holding back my tears. “If you’ll excuse me, I have some work to do.”

That night, while Carl was on the phone arguing with his insurance company, I slipped into our home office. My hands shook slightly as I booted up the computer and accessed our financial records.

What I found made my breath catch. The house — the one Carl was so proud of — was solely in my name.

I remembered signing the papers years ago, thinking it was just another formality Carl had asked me to handle while he was busy with “more important things.”

And the business we’d built together? I owned 51 percent of the shares. This was Carl’s doing, ironically. Early in our marriage, he’d put the majority stake in my name for tax purposes, assuming I’d never understand or question it.

“It’s just a formality, honey,” he’d said. “You know I make all the decisions for the company.”

All this time, I’d felt powerless, believing Carl controlled everything. But the truth was, I held all the cards. His carelessness and underestimation of me had backfired spectacularly.

A slow smile spread across my face as I realized the full extent of my position. Carl had no idea what was coming.

The next morning, I woke early and started packing Carl’s things. He watched from the doorway, looking lost and deflated.

“What are you doing?” he gasped.

I zipped up his suitcase with finality. “What does it look like, Carl? I’m packing your things. You’re leaving.”

Carl’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. “But this is…”

“My house,” I finished for him, allowing myself a small, satisfied smile. “Even the business! Funny how things work out, isn’t it?”

He ran a hand through his disheveled hair. “Mary, I… I’m sorry. I never meant for things to end like this.”

Did he think I would buy his act?

“No, you just meant to humiliate me in front of everyone we know before serving me with divorce papers. Much classier, Carl.”

He flinched as if I’d slapped him. “It wasn’t like that. I just… I didn’t know how to tell you. Things haven’t been right between us for a long time.”

“A mop, Carl? Really?” I shook my head in disbelief. “You know, for years I convinced myself that your thoughtlessness was just absent-mindedness. That you still cared, deep down. But now I see the truth. You stopped seeing me as a person a long time ago.”

“That’s not fair,” he protested weakly.

“Fair? Was it fair to string me along for months while you planned your exit strategy? Was it fair to treat me like a maid instead of a wife? Was it fair to lavish gifts on your sister while I got cleaning supplies?”

As I shoved Carl’s bags out the front door, the doorbell rang. I answered it to find two stern-looking men in suits.

“Mrs. Anderson?” one of them asked.

I stepped forward, chin held high. “Yes, that’s me. Can I help you?”

The man flashed a badge. “I’m Agent Roberts from the FBI. We need to ask you some questions about your sister-in-law, Mrs. Peterson.”

Carl, who was still lingering in the doorway, went pale. “What’s this about?” he stammered.

“Mrs. Peterson is under investigation for fraud and money laundering,” Agent Roberts explained, his voice clipped and professional. “We have reason to believe she may have involved your business in her illegal activities.”

I turned to Carl, whose expression confirmed my suspicions. He’d known something was off with his sister’s finances.

“I’ll be happy to cooperate fully with your investigation,” I said calmly. “In fact, as the majority shareholder of our company, I insist on it.”

Carl’s face contorted with shock and anger. Before he could respond, I added with a smirk, “Oh, honey, it looks like you’ll be needing that mop now more than me.” I pointed to his suitcases on the porch. “And don’t forget your things on your way out.”

“I’ll be speaking with my lawyer,” I called after him as he stumbled towards his car, the FBI agents following close behind. “I’m sure we’ll have plenty to discuss.”

Later that evening, I invited Linda over. As she walked into the house, her eyes widened in surprise.

“Mary, I thought you’d be staying with me,” she said, pulling me into a warm hug.

I smiled, feeling a sense of pride wash over me. “Turns out, I don’t need to go anywhere. The house is mine.”

Linda’s eyebrows shot up. “Well, well, well. Looks like Carl’s in for a rude awakening.”

As we settled into the living room with a glass of wine, a fog cleared from my mind. For the first time in years, I could breathe freely in my own home.

“You know,” Linda said thoughtfully, “I always thought karma was just a nice idea. But after everything that happened…”

I laughed softly. “I know what you mean. It’s like the universe decided to balance the scales all at once.”

Linda grinned, raising her glass. “Well, remind me never to get on your bad side. You’ve got some powerful karma working for you, girl!”

As I got ready for bed that night, I caught sight of my reflection in the mirror. The woman staring back at me looked stronger, more alive than she had in years.

“You know what the best part is?” I said to my reflection, a small smile spreading across my face. “I didn’t have to lift a finger. Karma took care of everything!”

The mop that started it all stood in the corner of the room, a silent sentinel of how quickly life can change. But for me, it had become a reminder that the most ordinary objects can sometimes hold the most extraordinary meaning.

The new year will see the start of something very new indeed

As one door closes, another opens and so, as the new year begins so will a new generation.

That’s right, it’s over for Gen Alpha as tomorrow (1 January) marks the rise of a new beginning.

While plenty of people are still dwelling on ‘Gen Z this’ and ‘Gen Z’ that, babies born after midnight tonight are part of a whole other label – and people ‘can’t believe’ what they will be called.

I’m not talking about the popular names lined up for newborns in 2025 but the fact they will be a part of Generation Beta.

Yep, the next wave of kids born between 2025 and roughly 2039 will be known as Gen B.

Those dates are flexible, of course, just like past generations, but one things for sure; Gen Beta begins at midnight. Gen Alpha ran from 2010 to 2024 with Gen Z (and here’s where the arguments begin) going from 1997 to 2013 after millennials from 1981 to 1996.

But users on Twitter are coming in hard, as one person wrote: “Might be the worst name they could of thought of.”

Another echoed: “Being called a Beta Baby is crazy work.”

“Well, that’s an unfortunate name,” someone else writes, as another is pretty made up: “Thank goodness I wasn’t born a Beta.”

“Imagine being called ‘Beta’ your entire life,” a different user said.

“I don’t think they’ll like that very much,” a sixth quips, with others even saying: “Imma have to wait 14 years to have my next child.”

And while some predict big advancements coming from this new generation, one user is less optimistic, writing: “This will be the worst generation ever mark my words.”

Some of big wishes for this lot too as they write: “I hope Gen Beta kids have a better, less technology dependent childhood than Alphas’s.”

While others have worries for them: “Generation beta is crazy. Why would they choose that? these kids aren’t gonna survive the lunch table.”

Although it’s worth pointing out that nearly all the other kids they’ll be sat with at the ‘lunch table’ are going to be Gen B too.

Plenty of users predict that ‘these memes will write themselves’, as others simply say ‘ouch’.

But there’s still that optimism from some as one writes: “In majority they will be kids of millennial and some of initial Gen Zs…all in all children of 90s kids.

“Hoping for best ever born generation as their parents are from best times of earth non tech followed by tech times.”

A host of lucky travellers will be able to raise a glass to the New Year twice today

Seeing as though the geniuses of the world are still struggling to come up with a viable way to defy the laws of physics so we can return to the past and visit the future, this is the closest thing you’re going to get.

The only stipulations are that you would be travelling in a plane rather than something resembling Doctor Who‘s tardis, and you have to make the journey on New Year’s Day.

So while you work out whether that’s something you’d fancy next year, let’s fill you in on what some excited passengers will be experiencing later this evening (31 December).

A host of people will have the chance to raise a glass to the dawn of a New Year twice thanks to the route their flights are taking today.

Those on board planes which cross the International Date Line (IDL) will effectively ‘travel back in time’, due to departing from their destination on 1 January but touching down in a place where it’s still 2024.

For those who don’t know, the IDL is an imaginary line across the Earth’s surface which passes through the Pacific Ocean and sets a boundary between places with two different calendar dates.

The International Date Line is responsible for the so-called 'time travel' flights (X)

The International Date Line is responsible for the so-called ‘time travel’ flights (X)

Think of how Australia is pretty much one day in front of us lot in the UK – when you cross the date line travelling eastward, you lose a day.

If you’re heading west, you gain a day. Simple, right?

The IDL has no legal international status and countries are free to choose the dates that they observe, according to the US National Ocean Service.

“While the date line generally runs north to south from pole to pole, it zigzags around political borders such as eastern Russia and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands,” it explained.

“When you cross the date line, you become a time traveler of sorts! Cross to the west and it’s one day later; cross back and you’ve ‘gone back in time’.”

The IDL – which separates the Western and Eastern hemispheres and is the epicentre where each calendar day begins and ends – is located roughly halfway around the world from the prime meridian, the 0 degrees longitude line in Greenwich, England.

So now you’ve got your head around all of the confusing stuff, let’s get down to the flight details.

Planes obviously cross the IDL throughout the rest of the year too, but if you want to quantum leap between years, you need a spot on a New Year’s Day flight.

Take this United Airlines flight which is taking off from Guam, a US territory, on Wednesday (1 January) for example.

It’s scheduled to take off from the Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport at 7.25am tomorrow morning for a seven hour and 15 minute journey to Honolulu, Hawaii.

So, those onboard will have already rang in the New Year the night before…but when they touch down, the passengers will have the opportunity to do it all over again.

That’s because the travellers – or should I say ‘time travellers’ – will land at 6:40pm when it is still 31 December in Honolulu.

Although it’s technically an internal flight, the plane will still cross the IDL.

United Airlines had a similarly timed flight scheduled last year too, telling customers: “You only live once, but you can celebrate New Year’s Eve twice!”

Unfortunately though, the journey was delayed significantly, meaning a double New Year was off the cards, according to the Independent.

You could also carry out this time travel schtick on flights that are travelling eastward across the IDL if they depart from places such as Tokyo or Sydney, too.

Brits who are struggling for plans obviously can’t jump on this last minute, but it’s certainly nice to know for next year.

Quitting alcohol could cause some severe symptoms in your body

It’s nearly about that time where people go from drinking for an entire week to suddenly going cold turkey for an entire month.

While Christmas and New Year is a great excuse to have all the treats you could ever hope for, tonight marks the end of a boozy era for many people.

A popular way to cleanse yourself for the New Year is to do Dry January – which is when people give up alcohol for the first month of the year.

Whoever does it will certainly feel better about not having hangovers, but it can be a struggle if all of your social connections are interlinked with alcohol.

But if you’re teetering on the fence about whether or not to do it, there are a lot of effects that giving up the sauce for a month can have on your body.

However, depending on how much you drink, it can range in severity.

As a caveat before we begin, if you are a heavy drinker or think you have a problem you should speak to your doctor. Suddenly stopping alcohol consumption completely can be dangerous in extreme cases and should be done under medical supervision.

For most people, however, Dry January can be a good way to cut back after indulging over Christmas and New Year.

So, according to Delamere, here is how stopping could affect your body.

12 hours (Getty Stock Image)

12 hours alcohol free

At the 12-hour mark you may start to feel some withdrawal symptoms. This could be hand tremors, sweating, restlessness, and retching.

12-24 hours (Getty Stock Image)

Between 12 and 24 hours these will continue. Sleep is likely to be disturbed, and you could experience some alcohol cravings, and a low mood.

From 12 hours to 72 is considered to be the most dangerous period if you are a very heavy drinker. In extreme cases, this could mean an increased heart rate, raised blood pressure, and seizures.

Three to seven days (Getty Stock Image)

Between three and seven days for most people the symptoms will begin to recede. However, for a few cases they can worsen and become Delirium Tremens, or DTs.

If this does happen then you should speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

On week (Getty Stock Image)

After a week you may notice your sleep patterns beginning to improve, though it can sometimes take longer.

Two weeks (Getty Stock Image)

At two weeks you may notice some weight loss, depending on how much you normally drink, as you are not taking in calories from your beverage of choice.

Three weeks (Getty Stock Image)

From three to four weeks, you may see your blood pressure improving if alcohol was a factor in it before.

A month (Getty Stock Image)

Finally, at the one month mark you could see some improvement in your skin.

For the majority of people, cutting out alcohol for a month is a good way to reduce your consumption, and the dangers are only a factor in more extreme cases.

Taking a month out can also allow you to re-evaluate your relationship with alcohol as well as saving you a bit of cash.

If you do choose to start drinking again, you can do so because you enjoy it rather than perhaps as a compulsion or social crutch.

The highly anticipated show landed on Netflix today

A new Harlan Coben mystery thriller has landed on Netflix today, continuing the tradition from Fool Me Once of New Year’s Day releases.

Fool Me Once was a massive surprise hit for Netflix, becoming the platform’s eighth most-viewed English-speaking show of all time.

The streamer has decided to follow this up with yet another Harlan Coben adaption, which was released this morning (1 January).

The show is called Missing You and follows a missing persons detective who comes across her former fiancé on a dating app.

The twist is that he went missing without a trace years ago.

The cast is absolutely stacked, including Rosalind Eleazar, Ashley Walters, Richard Armitage (of course), Sir Lenny Henry, and Jessica Plummer.

Author and creator Coben told Tudum: “Suppose the love of your life vanished, then one day you’re scrolling through one of those apps.

“And all of a sudden he’s back, and it leads to death and destruction and family secrets and all sorts of buried reasons for why he left the first time.”

And the reviews have already been flooding in.

Collider has given the thriller an 8/10, saying ‘the show never loses momentum with a steady rhythm of episodes’.

It added: “Missing You is an extremely bingeable series that offers good answers to its mysteries if you stick with it.

“Before that happens, however, you’ll be on a rollercoaster of twists and seemingly random events that pay off sooner rather than later.

“It boasts excellent performances – especially from Eleazar – and, in general, is exactly what you expect from an investigative series. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it sure knows how to spin it.”

Fandom Wire gave the show 7/10, saying: “The new British Netflix adaptation of another Harlan Coben novel, Missing You, is elevated by a strong, layered backstory and excellent performance from Slow Horses’ Rosalind Eleazar.

“That’s not to say the series is a hard-hitting drama, but the series version of a beach read that is meant to be a crime mystery that is light and entertaining rather than something gritty.”

Missing You has also been praised for its diversity.

Sir Lenny Henry spoke in an exclusive interview with LADbible about this, in which he said: “I read the book first, when I was asked to check it out to see if I wanted to be in it.

“I just thought, ‘This is going to be awesome’.

“Then when I showed up on the set, it was very diverse. So there were black people and brown people and lots of women, and it was just a very diverse set.

“It’s something you don’t… having been in the business a long time when I did Three Little Birds, we did that because I was a producer, but generally, Quay Street Productions [co-producers of the show] have done a thing here.

“To put marginalised people at the centre of a story, to bring them into the centre space and go take the pointy end and to have it be like this, and to have it succeed it’s just a wonderful thing to be part of.”

Missing You is available to stream on Netflix from 8am on 1 January.
