Asteroid 2024 YR4 seems to be causing concern about it’s potential collision course with Earth

Here is what 2024 YR4, the asteroid which is currently dominating the news cycle, looks like.

The asteroid was initially spotted and reported at the tail end of last year, while most of us were busy knocking back the bubbly and enjoying our Christmas dinners, and is currently hurtling away from us and out into the cold depths of outer space.

But this isn’t the last we’ve seen of YR4. Thanks to our Sun’s gravitational pull, the asteroid will find itself on a potential collision path with our planet.

YR4 is believed to be no smaller than 40m but no bigger than 100m wide, about three times the size of the Chelyabinsk meteor, which landed in Russia back in 2013.

Aside from a rough estimate of size, scientists don’t know too much else about YR4. However, they’ve given their ‘best guess’ as to what the asteroid most likely looks like.

NASA has since released the visualisation via the ‘Eyes on Asteroids’ site to the public, revealing that YR4 probably looks very much like a grey space rock and not the 10 quintillion dollar asteroid which would make us all billionaires.

Take a look at it below:

Yay, big grey space rock (NASA/Eyes On)

Yay, big grey space rock (NASA/Eyes On)

Sky News likened the asteroid’s size to that of an ‘apartment block’ and added that scientists currently predict that 22 December, 2032 would be the date of possible impact.

However, there’s no need to panic just yet, as NASA has given the rock a 2.3 percent (or one in 43) chance of hitting Earth.

This means there’s just shy of a 98 percent chance that everything is going to be just OK.

Scientists also have a rough prediction of the locations which YR4 could hit, should it strike our planet, with countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador landing in the potential impact zone.

Does NASA have a protocol should an asteroid pose a risk of hitting Earth?

Thankfully, yes. The scientists at NASA are acutely aware of the dangers of an asteroid striking the planet and have a protocol in place.

YR4 is circled in green (ATLAS)

YR4 is circled in green (ATLAS)

“An asteroid impact is the only natural disaster that could be prevented,” NASA asteroid expert Dr Kelly Fast explained.

“NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office supports projects to discover asteroids and to calculate their orbits far into the future.”

The space agency previously experimented with what an asteroid interception mission would look like, by blowing up a space rock back in 2022.

Should all else fail, YR4 would likely collide with Earth at a speed of 17 kilometres per second (around 38,000 miles per hour), causing extensive ‘local’ damage to the region it hits but no That’s some good news at least.

Scary moment Eagles legend Don Felder suffers medical emergency onstage in front of live crowd

Fans were left shocked and concerned after legendary Eagles guitarist Don Felder suffered a medical emergency during a live performance earlier this week.

Felder, 76, was performing on the Rock Legends Cruise on Thursday (February 13), when the incident occurred.

He had just finished explaining the story behind Tequila Sunrise and was about to perform the song when he suddenly appeared unwell.

Disturbing Onstage Moment Caught on Video

In a now-viral video circulating on YouTube, Felder can be seen strumming his guitar before he begins to sway back and forth. Moments later, he stops playing and attempts to walk toward the microphone, but his movements appear unsteady.

The moment can be seen below (Warning – some viewers may find the footage upsetting):

A woman from backstage quickly came to his aid, rushing onto the stage to assist him. Moments before she appeared, it appears as if Felder was attempting to mouth something to her.

She, along with other crew members, escorted him off as concerned fans watched in silence before breaking into cheers of support.

One audience member shouted, “We love you, Don!” as the musician was led away.

Fans React with Concern and Support

After the unsettling footage surfaced, fans flooded social media with messages of support for Felder.

“I hope he heals up real quick. Tip of the hat to the considerate crowd!!” one YouTube user wrote.

Another commented: “That’s hard to watch. Hope he’s okay. One of my fondest memories of the Eagles was that live video of Don and Walsh trading licks back and forth at the end of Hotel California.”

A third person shared: “I just hate that for him. I met him once backstage. Such a great guy and talented musician! Praying it was only dehydration and he’s all well soon. Love you Don!”

One fan, visibly shaken by the video, added: “This kinda stuff makes me squirm in my seat… It really freaks me out. Like literally trying to hold on for dear life, even though it’s not happening to me. But luckily, he had assistance right away. It looks like the woman caught his signal immediately.”

Felder’s Team Issues a Health Update

Following the scare, Felder’s team took to Instagram to reassure fans that the guitarist was doing better and had suffered from dehydration.

“We appreciate everyone’s concern regarding Don Felder’s abrupt stop to his show last night on the Rock Legends Cruise,” the statement read.

“After receiving medical attention, he was deemed to be suffering from dehydration. He was given fluids and is feeling much better. To ensure he has ample time to rehydrate and recover fully, we are working on rescheduling today’s show and adjusting the remainder of the cruise schedule accordingly.

“Thank you for your understanding, and remember—drink your water!”

Who Is Don Felder?

Felder is a legendary American musician and songwriter, best known for his time as the lead guitarist of the Eagles.

Joining the band in 1974, Felder played a crucial role in shaping their signature sound. He co-wrote the iconic hit Hotel California and contributed his masterful guitar work to classics like One of These Nights and Take It to the Limit.

Felder remained with the Eagles until 2001, during which the band became one of the best-selling acts in music history. After parting ways with the group, he pursued a solo career, releasing albums like Road to Forever and American Rock ‘N’ Roll, while continuing to tour and perform live.

Beyond music, Felder is also a published author. His memoir, Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles, details his time with the band, his struggles with addiction, and his journey through the highs and lows of rock stardom.

While fans were understandably shaken by the onstage emergency, Felder’s quick recovery is a relief — and his legendary career proves that even rock and roll icons aren’t invincible to a little dehydration.

President Trump could be eyeing a third term in office — something that’s currently prohibited as part of the country’s 22nd Amendment

Donald Trump has made comments in the past suggesting he’s eyeing up a third term in office.

Should Trump run for president once more, it would make him the first person to have done so since Franklin Roosevelt.

This comes down to the fact that it’s currently prohibited for a person to run for more than two terms in office, which is outlined in America’s 22nd Amendment.

What does the Amendment say?

The 22nd Amendment states, as per the National Constitution Center: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

What has Trump said about running again?

Trump has hinted on several occasions that he wants to run for office once more.

He first suggested it back in 2022, says TIME, during his campaign for reelection before losing to Joe Biden.

“We’re going to win Nevada and we’re going to win four more years in the White House,” Trump teased at the time.

“And then after that we’ll negotiate. Right? Because we’re probably—based on the way we were treated—we’re probably entitled to another four after that.”

He was quoted by MSNBC telling House Republicans last November after winning the election: “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say he’s so good we have got to figure something else out.”

More recently, Trump boasted how much money he’s raised and suggested that entitled him to run again.

Speaking to House Republicans in Florida last month, the 78-year-old said: “I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race, that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure because… I don’t know, I think I’m not allowed to run again. I’m not sure. Am I allowed to run again, Mike [Johnson]?”

How Trump could run for a third term

While it’s currently prohibited for a person to run more than twice, a bombshell proposal put recently forward by US Representative Andy Ogles suggested changes to the 22nd Amendment so Trump could be president for another four years after his current term.

Ogles suggested that amendment be changed so that it reads: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

The wording for the proposal, should it go through, would allow Trump to run again, but not former presidents like Barack Obama as he ran for two terms consecutively.

Politico reports this proposal passing is an extremely unlikely scenario, with it requiring two-thirds support in both chambers of Congress, or two-thirds of the states to call for a constitutional amendment, and then three-fourths of the states would have to ratify it. US politics is currently too divided for this to happen.

Elsewhere, Politico has pointed out that there’s a bit of loophole in the 22nd Amendment because of its wording.

The amendment states that a person cannot be elected to run for a third term; but it doesn’t say anything about serving a third term.

With this in mind, it’s possible that Trump could work his way around such wording to find himself president again for another four years. For instance, he could run as vice president, have the presidential candidate agree to step down on day one, and he could find himself back in the White House post-2028.

John Fortier, senior research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, has however said that there are laws that prevent this legal loophole from being exploited.

He told Sky News that a president or anyone in the line of succession for president ‘must meet the qualifications to become president’.

The astronaut opened up about the incredible expedition before his death

The astronaut behind one of the ‘most terrifying photos’ ever taken in space explained why it was it was chilling.

The late Bruce McCandless II opened up about his history-making expedition before his death, which included snapping a particularly haunting pic.

The idea of space is scary for most of us, not least of all for the fact it’s as far away from our home planet as possible without factoring in ‘space junk’ or potential alien megastructures and the weird blobs growing outside the International Space Station.

However, possibly the most terrifying thing to happen in space has actually been captured on camera.

In 1984, the then-47-year-old aviator embarked on a Space Shuttle mission to deploy two communication satellites for the first time.

And it wasn’t the only major NASA first, as the Boston-born man found himself the subject of the ‘most terrifying space photo’ ever taken at the time as he made the first untethered ‘spacewalk’.

The MMUs allowed them to move around in open space, untethered from the spacecraft at around 28,900 kilometers per hour.

This meant McCandless was ‘space walking’ for almost seven hours.

The iconic image from the Challenger shuttle shows McCandless floating freely above Earth, which is frightening even if you don’t suffer from astrophobia.

NASA said the picture was the 'most terrifying space photo' (NASA)

NASA said the picture was the ‘most terrifying space photo’ (NASA)

More than three decades after becoming the first human in history to complete an untethered free flight, McCandless told The Guardian there were been tensions in NASA about the plans.

“My wife was at mission control, and there was quite a bit of apprehension,” he explained.

He also said it didn’t feel as scary as it looked, adding: “I wanted to say something similar to Neil [Armstrong] when he landed on the Moon, so I said, ‘It may have been a small step for Neil, but it’s a heck of a big leap for me.’ That loosened the tension a bit.”

McCandless also said while he had been told about the silent vacuum of space, his tranquility was interrupted.

He joked that multiple people on his radio were asking a myriad of questions, which meant things weren’t exactly peaceful.

He continued: “My walk lasted six hours 45 minutes, and I stayed alongside the shuttle the whole time, moving 100 yards one way, 100 yards back.

“I was travelling at more than 18,000 miles an hour, but wasn’t aware of it, because the shuttle was going at the same speed.

“It was only when I looked at the Earth that I could tell we were moving fairly rapidly.”

At one point, he careered over the Florida peninsula and said it was ‘reassuring’ to see something he recognized below.

“It was a wonderful feeling, a mix of personal elation and professional pride: it had taken many years to get to that point.”

After logging more than 312 hours in space, he retired from NASA in 1990 and went on to work for the Lockheed Martin Space Systems.

At the age of 80, McCandless died in 2017 and was buried at the United States Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis.

Fans are losing it over Meryl Streep’s hilarious NSFW gesture during SNL’s 50th anniversary concert.

One of America’s favorite late night TV shows that has graced our screens for the past five decades is celebrating its big birthday bash.

Saturday Night Live has already kicked off its weekend of fun, starting with an SNL50 homecoming concert at Radio City Music Hall on Valentine’s Day, while preparing for its three-hour live special on Sunday which promises to be jam-packed with series alums, former hosts and the OG cast members.

And in true SNL style, the concert alone is getting a lot of laughs from viewers, with one NSFW moment with Meryl Streep since going viral.

The 75-year-old actress, who was sat next to Martin Short in the audience, was called out by hosts, Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer, after they said ‘someone’ was flipping people off during the show.

“We’re talking about you, Meryl Streep,” Gasteyer said as the camera swiftly panned to the record Golden Globe Award nominee and winner, who promptly raised her middle finger back at the hosts and to the camera.

The gag saw the audience burst into laughter and apparently tickled a lot of viewers from home, too.

Racing to Twitter, fans gushed the moment was ‘so funny’ and even a ‘highlight of an amazing show’.

One viewer wrote: “Meryl Streep flipping the finger is simply everything !! (+ look at how he’s looking at her)”, the fan made in reference to Short giggling next to Streep.

“Iconic”, another fan stated, while a third wrote: “MERYL STREEP THE LEGEND YOU ARE.”

It was apparently Streep’s night too as The Devil Wears Prada star later shared a heartwarming Valentine’s Day dance with Short, who have been longtime friends before romance rumors sparked last year.

The Only Murders in the Building co-stars were spotted laughing, clapping and dancing at the concert which aired on TV on Friday (February 14).

The pair have been friends for almost a decade, but they have seemingly gotten closer since filming the third season of the show with Streep playing the part of Short’s romantic interest, Loretta Durkin.

Their affection and chemistry on and off screen sparked rumors they were perhaps more than friends. However, Short’s reps reportedly shut down the claims, telling The Messenger: “They are just very good friends, nothing more.”

Then on the Club Random podcast, the 74-year-old doubled down on squashing the rumors, saying: “We’re not a couple. We are just very close friends.”

Other notable moments at the SNL homecoming concert include Miley Cyrus’ performance, during which she reportedly called on the audience to sing along to ‘Flowers’ with her, Steven Spielberg appeared too busy checking out the camera set-up than watching the show.

Meanwhile, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson ‘walked out’ after being told it wasn’t an awards show while Ferrell and Gasteyer also delivered a performance of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’.

The comedian isn’t fond of people’s fascination with his love life

Pete Davidson has made waves in comedy circles, but the star recently reflected on the consistent fascination regarding his love life despite his success.

If Davidson is dating someone in Hollywood, you’ll likely see a fair few articles about it or people talking about it on Twitter.

This isn’t exactly how the comedian would want to be remembered.

Speaking in an interview with Page Six, he reflected on his past relationships and essentially being in the spotlight so much.

The star also gave an insight into how he and Ariana Grande now get along, as the pair were previously engaged for four months back in 2018.

Grande has also remained in the limelight over the years, most recently earning herself an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film Wicked.

Davidson said: “When we see each other—which is few and far between, because we’re not in the same circles—it’s all love.

“I hope she wins the Oscar, I hope she takes the gold.”

The comedian also went on to say the fascination with him and his relationship with other stars was actually rather ‘humiliating and upsetting.’

He added: “I’ve had some pretty adult relationships with some pretty amazing women and when it’s ended it’s been cool.

“Everyone is dating everyone and it’s Hollywood.

“But because I’m ugly, they wrote about me. I was harassed for like five years and it made my life a living hell.

“You want people to write about your work. I was one of the youngest ever cast members on SNL and all that got pushed to the side because of who I was dating.”

He also commented that he has mixed feelings about how he has been perceived on the internet.

He noted that it was equally embarrassing as it was flattering when he was considered the focal point of BDE, a term meaning big d*** energy.

He continued: “I’m a very sensitive person and it’s humiliating to see a picture of yourself eating a sandwich in a pink T-shirt with the headline ‘This is what BDE is’.

With that said, he said he was comfortable and happy to recently strip off for an ad for Reformation, a female clothing company.

He joked: “If you’re going to be in underwear showing your mushrooms, you might as well get it out of the way before you turn 40.”

Talking about the future, the 32-year-old insisted that for the next 6 months he won’t be dating and that he was starting to turn his life around, abstaining from drugs and social media.

He simply added: “If I need to know something, my friends will tell me.”

Elon Musk only took over and launched the site earlier this week

Elon Musk’s DOGE website appears to have been hacked, with tech experts saying the site feels ‘completely slapped together’.

The tech mogul was appointed the head of the US government’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) by President Donald Trump, tasked with a mission to ‘dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies’.

The website officially launched on Wednesday (12 February) as Musk promised the department would be ‘maximally transparent’ after critics pointed out the irony in the world’s richest man tasked with cutting funding while his own companies such as SpaceX have benefitted from the federal budget.

“I don’t know of a case where an organization has been more transparent than the DOGE organization,” the Twitter owner said in the Oval Office with Trump this week.

However, the website didn’t last long before two of its pages were targeted by hackers on Friday (February 14), 404 Media reports.

One mysterious message was left on the site which read: “THESE ‘EXPERTS’ LEFT THEIR DATABASE OPEN – roro.”

A second message added: “This is a joke of a .gov site.”

Both have since been removed.

Web development experts also told the tech news outlet that the DOGE site ‘feels like it was completely slapped together’, containing ‘tons of errors and details leaked in the page source code’.

The pros said that they believed DOGE’s site has not been running on government servers.

Meanwhile, DOGE also reportedly posted classified staffing information of a US intelligence agency, Huffpost reported.

The function lets users ‘trace’ their ‘tax dollars from the bureaucracy’ and investigate Cabinet-level agencies and other departments to review staffing numbers and total wages earned.

A note on the page says that the data excludes military, Postal Service, White House and other intelligence agencies, though DOGE’s database does give information about the federal agency behind US intelligence satellites.

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) is the only intelligence agency on the website, The Independent reports, where Musk’s SpaceX has a $1.8 billion contract to build spy satellites.

Meanwhile, SpaceX has around $15 billion in contracts with NASA, which certainly makes it interesting that DOGE is set to investigate the space agency’s spending.

On whether Musk’s involvement with DOGE presents conflicts of interest at NASA, Janet Petro, NASA’s acting administrator, said ‘we have very strict conflict of interest policies,’ adding the agency’s legal office would vet any DOGE employee for such conflicts, Reuters reported.

Musk and his DOGE team have since gone on a cost-cutting spree which saw thousands of federal employees fired while the department doubled its own spending.

Government records obtained by Fortune reveal the scheme had spent $6.75 million by January, which has shot up to $14.4 million as of February 8.

A CT (computed tomography) scan uncovered that her arteries had narrowed, and after a simple blood thinner drug was administered the pain was alleviated greatly, and her legs began to get warmer as the blood flowed through her legs.

However, gangrene took over one of her toes which meant it required amputating.

So what was the ancient ‘holy fire’ disease she was diagnosed with?

It’s called ergotism and it is caused by the consumption of egot, which is a natural fungus that lives on wheat.

Ergot poisoining causes convulsions, hallucinations and gangrene, and in medieval times people even thought it was associated with demons or demonic possession of humans.

A study that was published in the National Library of Medicine, and titled ‘One holy man, one eponym, three distinct diseases. St. Anthony’s fire revisited’, talks through its history.

“The first mention to a gangrenous ergotism plague in Europe appeared in the year 857, in Germany. Several other records of epidemics then emerged in France, Germany and Scandinavia,” it explains.

“Overall, as many as 83 ergotism epidemics have been reported in various parts of Europe from 945 AD onwards, and this list is certainly incomplete.

“The German physician Wendelin Thelius, who described an epidemic developed in the year 1596 in the Kingdom of Hesse, was the very first to identify ergotism as the underlying cause.”

It wasn’t until 1676 that the cause was discovered to be that of infected rye by Claviceps Purpurea, which is an ergot fungus, although it wasn’t until 1778 that measures were first introduced to combat the plague.

The study added: “French physician Tessier observed a huge epidemic in the year 1778 in Sologne (France), during which more than 8000 people died, and was hence persuaded to recommend drainage of fields, compulsory cleaning of grain and replacement of infected grain with potatoes.”
