The former student admitted he was still ‘awful to be around’ 50 years later

Two students once embarked on a school science project to see how long they could stay awake for, not realizing it would have a lasting effect on their lives.

The year is 1963; Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech during the March on Washington for Jobs of Freedom; Beatlemania really ignites, and JFK is assassinated in Texas while riding in a motorcade with his wife.

1963 is also the year that 17-year-old Randy Gardner and his friend Bruce McAllister make a pact to stay up for a staggering 264 hours.

Their idea was that they would smash a world record (260 hours) and ace their science assignment, meanwhile discovering what really happens to a human’s brain if they don’t get enough sleep.

Speaking about the origins of the test, McAllister recalled that they had initially wanted to explore the effect of sleeplessness on paranormal ability.

“We realised there was no way we could do that, and so we decided on the effect of sleep deprivation on cognitive abilities, performance on the basketball court. Whatever we could come up with.”

In order to decide which of the duo would do the staying up, they flipped a coin, and it was decided that Gardner would become sleep-deprived in the name of science.

McAllister explained that he also stayed awake to monitor his friend. But after ‘three nights of sleeplessness’ he woke up ‘writing notes on the wall’.

Realising that their feat was more difficult than it seemed, the pair enlisted the help of another friend – sleep researcher William Dement from Stanford University.

Recounting the experiment, the late Washington man said: “[Randy’s parents] were very worried that this might be something that would really be harmful to him. Because the question was still unresolved on whether or not if you go without sleep long enough you will die.”

Of course, those who suffer from sleep deprivation can be at risk of heart disease, exhibit poor balance and be subjected to high blood pressure.

While Gardner and McAllister’s experiment started well, it went on to birth some unexpected results.

After three days without any sleep, the former apparently began to experience concentration issues and short-term memory loss. Gardner was also reportedly suffering from moodiness, paranoia and hallucinations.

Dement said: “He was physically very fit so we could always get him going by playing basketball or going bowling, things like that.

“If he closed his eyes he would be immediately asleep.”

Brain scans would later reveal that the participants’ brain had been ‘catnapping the entire time… parts of it would be asleep, parts of it would be awake’.

Unbelievably, the teen was able to stay awake for a total of 11 days (264 hours).

This broke the previous record of 260 hours, which was held by a Honolulu-based disc jockey.

After concluding the experiment, Gardner was taken to a naval hospital.

Speaking to NPR, Gardner said: “I slept just over 14 hours. I remember when I woke up, I was groggy, but not any groggier than a normal person.”

Luckily, the teen seemed to have no major short-term issues from completing his science project.

However, he later admitted that he had been suffering from unbearable insomnia for decades.

He explained: “I was awful to be around. Everything upset me. It was like a continuation of what I did 50 years ago.”

Over the years, there have been countless stories about the comedian’s relationship history

Pete Davidson has been in Hollywood for years making waves as a comedian, but it seems many only know him for his dating history.

Davidson has admitted he isn’t exactly fond of how much his dating life gets mentioned by outlets and by people on social media.

Speaking to Page Six, Davidson opened up about some of his past relationships and reflected on why he thinks people are so fixated on them.

In case you have forgotten, here is a list of everyone the public knows the star dated.

Who has Pete Davidson dated?

• Carly Aquilino (2015)

• Ariana Grande (2018)

• Kate Beckinsale (2019)

• Margaret Qualley (2019)

• Kaia Gerber (2019–2020)

• Phoebe Dynevor (2021)

• Kim Kardashian (2021–2022)

• Emily Ratajkowski (2022)

• Chase Sui Wonders (2022–2023)

• Madelyn Cline (2023-2024)

Davidson said he believes that one of the key reasons people focus on it so much is because he is ugly.

He explained: “I’ve had some pretty adult relationships with some pretty amazing women and when it’s ended it’s been cool.

“Everyone is dating everyone and it’s Hollywood.

“Look at Paul Mescal, Timmy [Chalamet], Barry Keough. But because I’m ugly, they wrote about me. I was harassed for like five years and it made my life a living hell.”

He also said he would much rather be remembered for his work in comedy than for who he has dated.

He added: “[It’s] embarrassing because you want people to write about your work. I was one of the youngest ever cast members on SNL and all that got pushed to the side because of who I was dating.”

These feelings have likely long played on the star’s mind, as this isn’t the first time he has brought them up.

Last December, while speaking to W magazine he said he wants to know for a lot more than his dating history.

He said: “I just want to be known for doing good work. I want to be out there only when it’s [a] movie, stand-up, charity, or business ventures. That’s when I want to be seen. I don’t want to be this f****** loser who just dates people. That’s not who I am.”

Going forward, he said he is taking a break from dating and is currently detoxing some things from his life, including drugs and social media.

The suspect now remains in police custody

A school in Indiana may have just avoided a school shooting after a tipster raised the alarm over their friend.

Police in Indiana say they have arrested 18-year-old Trinity Shockley following fears she would commit a mass shooting at her high school on Valentine’s Day.

She was arrested just days after authorities uncovered the alleged plot to shoot up Mooresville High School, located southwest of Indianapolis.

The tipster informed the FBI that they believed their friend was planning the attack and had access to an AR-15 rifle as well as a bulletproof vest.

The tipper also revealed that Shockley was obsessed with Nikolas Cruz, the mass murderer who shot and killed 14 students and three staff members at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School back in February 2018.

When police raided Shockley’s home, they also found posters dedicated to other mass shooters. The was reportedly photos of Cruz; Dylan Roof, who killed nine people at a South Carolina church in 2015; and Andrew Blaze, who killed three people at a Pennsylvania grocery store in 2017.

When questioned by investigators, Shockley claimed that she was ‘joking’ about her plans. However, in messages sent to the tipster that were later revealed, she had said: “I’ve been planning this for a YEAR”.

Shockley had allegedly told her friend that she had been planning the shooting for a year (Morgan County Sheriff's Office)

Shockley’s social media posts also contained photos of the gun magazines as well as flattering messages about Cruz and Roof. Authorities have also said there were threats to carry out a school shooting.

The suspect is currently being held without bond, and stands accused of conspiracy to commit murder, threat to commit terrorism, and conspiracy to commit intimidation.

Mooresville Police Detective Matthew McDaniel, who got information from the school, has spoken about the suspect and their mental health.

Court records indicate that Shockley had previously received mental health counseling since freshman year and had expressed suicide thoughts. However, the school never considered the issue ‘significant enough to cause intervention’.

McDaniel’s also stated that her father ‘would deny her access to the resources’ whenever the teenager ‘would try to receive mental health assistance’.

In the court documents, the detective said: “It was [the school’s] understanding that Mr. Shockley did not believe in mental health treatment and did not take his daughter’s conditions seriously.”

Shockley had also told investigators that she had been bullied for years at the school, most notably after being involved in an incident that saw her struck by a drunk driver while she was waiting for the school bus back in 2022.

It is the fourth shark attack to have taken place in the area since 2021, with almost all resulting in a lost limb

A woman has lost both of her hands after trying to ‘engage’ with a shark while on a vacation of a lifetime in the Caribbean.

The tourist attempted to snap a picture of the apex predator, which is believed to be between six and nine feet long, when the beast snapped back at the holidaymaker in hip-deep water on a beach on Providenciales, the main island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago.

The incident took place on Friday last week (February 7), at the eastern end of Blue Hills Beach near Da Conch Shack and Thompson’s Cove Beach – with the culprit understood to be either a bull shark or tiger shark, according to Visit Turks and Caicos Islands.

Turks and Caicos Islands government has since warned tourists of the dangers that lurk in its crystal clear waters.

The Department of Environment & Coastal Resources Authorities issued the following statement: “On Friday 7th February a tourist was injured by a shark in the waters adjacent to Blue Hills, Providenciales.

“The individual was taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre where she was stabilized and later flown off island for further medical care.

“Upon confirmation of the incident the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources (DECR) issued a beach closure notification from Thompson’s Cove Beach to Froggies ATV, Blue Hills in an abundance of caution. The beach was reopened on Sunday, February 9th at 1pm after it was determined that the shark had moved to deeper water.”

It continued: “The shark was estimated to be approximately 6ft in length, however the species is yet to be confirmed.

“Further to the investigation, it has been determined that the tourist had attempted to engage with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to take photographs.

“The DECR would like to urge the public to always be aware of your surroundings, follow local advisories, and respect marine life. Swim in designated areas, avoid murky waters, never swim alone, and do not attempt to feed marine wildlife under any circumstances.”

This month’s incident is the fourth recorded shark attack to have taken place in the Turks and Caicos since 2020.

The first took place in September 2021, when a male tourist was bitten on his wrist by a seven-foot lemon shark or tiger shark, while the next took place almost two years later in May 2023, this time a 22-year-old holidaymaker lost his foot.

In May last year, a male resident was attacked while snorkelling, with the bite being so severe that it resulted in amputation of his leg above his knee.

The controversial Guantanamo Bay could soon be home to deported migrants

An infamous prison which has been accused of ‘torturing and abusing’ inmates has been picked as a new destination for deported migrants under the Trump administration.

Since Donald Trump took over the White House as the 47th President of the United States, he has taken a tough approach to immigration.

Within weeks of his presidency, he signed a slew of executive orders to ‘reclaim control’ of the States, hiked up tariffs to neighbors, Canada, Mexico and China to encourage their cooperation in halting illegal immigration and even threatened Colombia with similar sanctions for refusing to accept deportation flights which have been ramped up.

He’s also been looking at revoking student visas for foreign youngsters and deporting them if they are found protesting against Israel, launching a new detention center for deportees in Colorado, and proposed another idea to exile repeat criminal offenders of any nationality, including the US, to far away lands in a ‘modern’ take on a penal colony.

Trump’s plans for Guantanamo Bay

As part of his plans, he’s also been looking at expanding the controversial Guantanamo Bay prison which was opened by President George Bush in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attack to send ‘illegal enemy combatants’.

Now, Trump is hoping to send migrants to the notorious Cuba jail by signing the Laken Riley Act.

The prison is still home to some 15 terror suspects, including those behind the September 2001 attacks.

During his first term in Oval Office, Trump reversed a Barack Obama administration order to keep the prison open in 2018, despite protests from human rights activists.

Under President Obama, more than 150 detainees were released but the former POTUS was slammed for failing to fully close the center.

‘Living hell’

Guantanamo Bay has been dubbed a ‘legal black hole’, reports The Mirror, where its prisoners endure a ‘living hell’ of abuse and torture.

The perimeter of the prison is surrounded by a minefield and plans reveal prisoners will either be kept in small detention centers or tents manned by soldiers and marines.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International branded the prison ‘a symbol of torture, rendition and indefinite detention without charge or trial’.

As well as human rights protesters, the United Nations also slammed the facility, calling it a ‘stain on the US Government’s commitment to the rule of law.’

Former prisoners that were released under Obama’s rule included a British father, Shaker Aamer, who said he was tortured, beaten and held in solitary confinement for 13 years in the prison where he was held without charge.

Obama pledged to close Guantanamo in 2016, saying it ‘undermines’ national security rather than strengthening it.

Before signing the Laken Riley Act, which makes the expansion of Guantanamo Bay vision a reality, Trump previously said: “We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people.

“Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them because we don’t want them coming back.

“So we’re going to send them out to Guantanamo Bay. This will double our capacity immediately, and tough. That’s a tough – that’s a tough place to get out of.”

However, while Trump did have many fans for the stunt, not everyone was as amused by the move.

One person wrote: “We all know he is pandering to the cult with that garbage and mockery of our country.

Another added: “Of course he does. First criminal president…and he and MAGA are proud of it. Make America Great Again?”

With a third commenting: “It should serve as a reminder to everyone that the president is a criminal.”

While Trump hasn’t publicly spoken about keeping the mug shot close to him in the White House, he has previously insisted it was an iconic photo.

During a roundtable of Black voters in June last year, he said: “”The mug shot is the best ev—it just beat Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra by a lot. That’s the No. 1 mug shot of all time. It’s really an amazing thing.

“Since it happened, the support among the Black community and Hispanic community has skyrocketed.”

The YouTuber has given away his biggest prize yet in a Squid Game-inspired game

This is the moment a contestant won a record-breaking $10,000,000 as part of MrBeast’s BeastGames.

Famous YouTuber, MrBeast – real name is Jimmy Donaldson – is renowned for giving out life-changing sums of money and luxurious prizes to his 362 million subscribers and even strangers who participate in his popular ‘Beast Games’.

The games stage elaborate challenges and tasks for participants who are in with a shot at bagging some top prizes, though his latest show, inspired by the Netflix series, Squid Game, has been critizied by some as ‘sadistic’.

Nevertheless, his game show, which premiered on Amazon Prime in December, saw a staggering 1,000 contestants compete gruelling physical and mental challenges to be in with a chance of bagging the top prize fund, $10,000,000 – the biggest cash prize in reality TV.

Now, the games came to an end with one lucky participant taking home the ginormous pot.

Jeffrey Randall Allen, identified as player 831 in the game, fought off tough competition from fellow player, Twana Barnett, to win the money.

The finale invited the last standing six players which was then whittled down to Jeffrey and Twana.

The round saw Jeffery blindfolded and tasked with guessing which out of 10 briefcases had the $10 million cheque inside that had been concealed by Twana.

Incredibly, he chose the correct case in the first round and celebrated his victory by sliding down a mountain of cash and greeting his wife and son.

The win comes as Jeffery had previously revealed on the show that his son, Lucas, suffers from a rare brain disease called Creatine Transporter Deficiency.

He indicated he wanted to use the prize money to finding a cure.

When he was crowned the winner, Jeffery remarked to his wife: “Can you believe that? $10 million,” to which she said in tears: “You’re gonna find Lucas a cure.”

Twana was also given $100,000 as a runner-up and Mr Beast said he’d handed out $20 million to 85 players while each contestant took home $2,000.

Another lucky player also won a $1.8 million private island.

But the show wasn’t without controversy as it staged several brutal challenges, during which Mr Beast attempted to coax players out of the game for an immediate cash prize, while contestants had to knock their fellow players out or sacrifice themselves along the way.

Critics said the show was ‘dystopian’ for some of its challenges, though it became Amazon Prime Video’s most watched series ever with more than 50 million viewers in a month.

Fans also say they have been gripped throughout the series, as one said on Instagram: “Ngl I was way more into this series than I thought I was gonna be.”

“Best finale in history,” another viewer said, with dozens of others calling for a second series.

“This is my favorite game show I’ve ever watched,” a woman wrote. “Had me bawling multiple times throughout.”

The 26-year-old boasts the most subscribers of any YouTube channel and stands as the third-most-followed content creator on TikTok.

Mr Beast said he was ‘sure’ a second season of the show could happen.

I wonder if he had any billionaires in mind?

Bill Burr has told us how he really feels about the state of America right now after laying into billionaires.

The comedian spoke earlier this week on his podcast about how he feels about billionaires in the US and he really didn’t feel like holding back…

And while some social media users said he’s ‘f**king right’, others have called the comments ‘completely misguided’, with one writing: “There is a lot of work being done and Bill is doing none of it.”

Burr said on his Monday Morning Podcast: “The amount of people who are struggling out there because of these f**king billionaires.

“And they got us all arguing, liberal and conservative, we gotta stop doing that.

“Like I am so tired of hearing about people going to bed worried about what is going to happen next week.

“And if you work a full f**king week at a job, you should be able to pay your f**king rent.

“You shouldn’t have to go out and get another f**king job and still be struggling.”

The comedian went on to justify his comments and then hit the people with the most controversial part of his rant.

He continued: “It’s bad for the country because then the kids don’t see their parents so they are not getting the upbringing that they need.

“These f**king billionaires, they need to be put down like rabid dogs, they are like rabid with f**king greed, just going out and dividing everybody.”

While most didn’t take Burr’s words to literally mean kill billionaires, many took issues with him being the mouthpiece for this sentiment, especially considering he is wealthy and is thought to be worth $20 million himself.

As you can imagine, this started fiery debates on social media with people weighing in on his comments.

One user commented: “Hey Bill, I don’t even have $200K to my name. Maybe donate to me if you feel like rich people need to help out… oh wait, you’re probably one of those ‘as long as it’s not my money, it should be handed out freely’ people huh.”

Another added: “It’s the politicians not the billionaires. Now some of them are evil. But, politicians make the laws that create this. Bill Burr biggest disappointment of the last couple years.”

However, on the flipside, another person sided with Burr and said: “Exactly. For years the rebuttal has been ‘work harder’, ‘get more skilled’, ‘they don’t deserve’ because of whatever reason and now we come to find out, they were just stealing it.

With another siding with him and adding: “I love Bill Burr because he talks the truth. The rich elite need to be brought down a peg or two.”

The bill will come into effect in July if passed

A newly proposed bill could see men find an eye-watering amount if they are caught ‘ejaculating without intent of conceiving a baby’.

Titled ‘The Contraception Begins At Erection Act’ – which legislators in Ohio and Mississippi are hoping to pass – would make it illegal for a man to ejaculate with no intention of conceiving a baby.

Both states have exceptions for sperm donation and if a couple use contraception. In Mississippi this would criminalise male masturbation; in Ohio this wouldn’t be the case.

A summary of the Mississippi bill reads: “This bill, known as the ‘Contraception Begins at Erection Act,’ proposes to make it unlawful for a person to discharge genetic material (sperm) without the intent to fertilize an embryo, effectively criminalizing certain male reproductive behaviors.”

While the bill wouldn’t jail men, it would hand them hefty fines.

On the first offense, it would be $1,000, which would be raised to $5,000 for a second offense. And if it was to happen for a third time, the individual would have to fork out a whopping $10,000. The same fines would apply in both states.

As you might have gathered, the legislation is not entirely serious.

The Mississippi bill was put forward by lawmaker Bradford Blackmon, the bill would come into force on July 1, 2025, if signed into law by Gov. Tate Reeves – but as we say, this is extremely unlikely to happen.

Blackmon noted that many bills regarding reproductive rights are often targeted at women.

“All across the country, especially here in Mississippi, the vast majority of bills relating to contraception and/or abortion focus on the woman’s role when men are fifty percent of the equation,” he wrote, as per NBC News.

“This bill highlights that fact and brings the man’s role into the conversation. People can get up in arms and call it absurd but I can’t say that bothers me.”

The Ohio bill was brought by State Representatives Anita Somani, who has also been an OBGYN for 30 years, and Tristan Rader. They say it has been drafted in response to moves regulating women’s bodies.

Representative Somani said: “You don’t get pregnant on your own. If you’re going to penalize someone for an unwanted pregnancy, why not penalize the person who is also responsible for the pregnancy?”

She emphasised that her aim is not to pass the bill, but to start a conversation

She added: “It’s more to make the statement and start the conversation. You know, I’m not here as an OBGYN, I’m not here to regulate reproductive rights, I’m here to show the absurdity of regulating anybody’s rights.”

Women’s reproductive rights in the US have changed drastically in recent years — the biggest being the overturning Roe V. Wade ruling in 2022, which dated back to 1973.

The precedent had given women the right to have an abortion, with it now being illegal in ten states for women to have a termination, even if they have been raped.

Some of the bill’s critics have taken it at face value, with Ohio State Republican Representative Austin Beigel saying: “It’s beyond ridiculous what’s going on here. It’s a mockery of the most basic biological concepts.”

Luigi Mangione is well aware of the support he has received over the months

Last year, Luigi Mangione was arrested as the suspect in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson and has now addressed the support he has received in a statement.

Brian Thompson was shot and killed after stepping out of a New York hotel on December 4 with video surveillance capturing the moment he was attacked.

A few days later, after the police called on the public to help identify the alleged shooter, Mangione was apprehended in Pennsylvania after being recognized by a McDonald’s employee.

He was then extradited back to NYC and the 26-year-old was charged with the CEO’s murder and pleaded not guilty in front of a court in late December.

He faces multiple charges from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, including first and second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and murder as an act of terrorism.

Despite these charges Mangione has received ongoing support from people around the world with some people even becoming obsessed with the alleged assassin.

A new website has been created by Mangione’s legal team that provides answers to frequently asked questions in addition to having a message from the accused to his supporters.

In a statement he spoke directly to them and said: “I am overwhelmed by – and grateful for – everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support.

“Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe. While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive.

“Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future.”

Multiple fundraisers have been popping up since Mangione’s arrest with the website GoFundMe explaining the decision to take many of them down.

GoFundMe’s terms and conditions clearly state that fundraisers can’t be used for ‘the legal defense of financial and violent crimes, including those related to money laundering, murder, robbery, assault, battery, sex crimes or crimes against minors’.

This then resulted in fundraisers being started on Christian site GiveSendGo with the communications director Alex Shipley defending this controversial move.

He has previously said: “We believe every person is entitled to due process in a court of law — not in the court of public opinion.

“To be absolutely clear, we do not support or condone vigilante justice. However, people have a constitutional right to a strong legal defense, and access to that defense should not be reserved only for the wealthy or those who fit a particular narrative.”
