John Henry Ramirez stabbed Pablo Castro to death and his son Aaron had been seeking revenge for 18 years

A man who spent 18 years trying to get his father’s killer executed had a sudden realisation just moments after the lethal injection process.

On 14 July 2004, John Henry Ramirez stabbed convenience store worker Pablo Castro 29 times in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 2008, Ramirez was convicted of the murder and put on death row.

According to The Texas Tribune, his lawyers attempted to stop his execution twice by filing motions to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and Nueces County’s state district attorney – but both were denied.

Ramirez was executed via lethal injection on 3 October 2022, with a few of Castro’s children and his daughter-in-law all in attendance.

Oscar-nominated short film I Am Ready, Warden follows the lead up to Ramirez’s death row execution and the impact it had on Castro’s son Aaron.

“The majority of the time, I was angry,” Aaron explained to The Guardian. “My father was a man who minded his own business, worked hard, enjoyed family and being around his children.

“He was just trying to survive. Ramirez took him away from us, and for that he needed to be executed.

“Boom. Justice. Closure. The dark cloud would clear.”

However, that’s not how it turned out, as just hours before his execution, Aaron had a change of heart and realised he ‘didn’t need to see it’.

“There was no more need to be there,” he said when Ramirez was finally executed. “A life was lost today, taken too soon just as it was when I was 14. I’m not going to celebrate. This isn’t a moment to celebrate.

“The shock that it actually happened was just mind-blowing. The dark cloud didn’t clear, it was still there. I didn’t magically feel better.”

Aaron came to the realisation that ‘no human being should be in charge of taking the life of another’.

Documentary maker Smriti Mundhra said she wanted to make the film ‘from the perspective of someone who actually had committed a crime’.

She said: “In the intervening years, in their time on death row, how does a person change? Are they the same person as the one who committed the crime?”

Mundhra explained that it took a lot of convincing to get Aaron to take part in the documentary, adding: “It was only in the last days leading up to the execution, after many months of trust building between Aaron and me, that he agreed to participate.”

When Ramirez’s death was announced on the radio, reporter Keri Blakinger added: “Everything that I’ve ever covered about the death penalty has been filtered through the lens of my words.

“And here we have the raw images of Aaron’s physical reaction as he processes the execution, which as a reporter working with words I could never do.”

In his final words, Ramirez apologised to Castro’s family and expressed ‘regret’ for his actions, adding: “I just want to say to the family of Pablo Castro, I appreciate everything that y’all did to try and communicate with me through the victim’s advocacy program.

“I hope this finds you comfort. If this helps you then I am glad. I hope in some shape or form this helps you find closure.”

The map of Mount Everest shows clear danger zones on the brutal climb

Many climbers have died attempting to get past Mount Everest’s unforgiving final hurdle.

The world’s tallest mountain at 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet) has long been a symbol of extreme human endurance.

Sadly, however, its formidable conditions, freezing temperatures and low oxygen levels have led to many deaths.

As shown in a map by Pointofnoreturn.org, over 330 people have died attempting to reach the summit since records began in 1921.

But the most dangerous area on Everest is the ‘Death Zone,’ which begins anywhere upwards of 8,000 meters (26,247 feet).

Oxygen levels are only about one-third of what they should be normally, which often leads to altitude sickness, hypoxia and death.

Many casualties become disoriented, suffer from exhaustion, or experience high altitude-related issues.

“Mapping Everest’s death toll reveals clear danger zones: the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, the sheer Lhotse Face, and the notorious Hillary Step just before the summit,” the Mount Everest Official Instagram account, which shared the map, said.

“Historical data shows that casualties skyrocketed in the 1970s as more climbers attempted the ascent, with deaths now concentrated near the summit.

“Sherpas, who are better adapted to high altitudes, tend to die at lower elevations, while foreign climbers are more likely to perish near the peak.”

Despite the dangers, over 7,200 people have climbed Everest and reached the summit, at least once.

Shaunna Burke, a climber who summited Everest in 2005, previously opened up about the ‘death zone’ and how she managed to get through it.

She told Business Insider: “Your body is breaking down and essentially dying.

“It becomes a race against the clock.

“Every second or third breath your body gasps for air, and you wake yourself up.”

Meanwhile, Sir Edmund Hillary, known as the first person to climb Everest in 1953, with Tenzing Norgay, has previously complained about the lack of help offered by other climbers.

He told the New Zealand Herald: “If you have someone who is in great need and you are still strong and energetic, then you have a duty, really, to give all you can to get the man down and getting to the summit becomes very secondary.

“I think the whole attitude towards climbing Mt Everest has become rather horrifying. The people just want to get to the top. They don’t give a damn for anybody else who may be in distress and it doesn’t impress me at all that they leave someone lying under a rock to die.”

A simulation video shows what would happen if asteroid ‘2024 YR4’ came into contact with Earth

A potentially dangerous asteroid is being closely monitored by NASA with there being a small chance of it hitting Earth in 2032 – and a harrowing simulation has shown what could happen if it came plummeting into us.

The asteroid, named ‘2024 YR4’, has caught the space agency’s ‘attention’ after it was discovered by NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile on 27 December, last year.

Here’s what could happen if 2024 YR4 – estimated to be 130 to 330 feet (40 to 100 metres) across – collided with Earth:

Where is 2024 YR4?

As things stand, the rock is moving away from Earth at around 8.24 miles per second (13.26 kilometers per second), and is almost 27 million miles away.

And NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies says that 2024 YR4 has the potential to collide with our planet on six separate times between 2032 and 2071.

Paul Chodas, director of NASA’s Centre for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), has given the asteroid a 1.2 percent probability of hitting Earth in 2032.

A simulation video shows what would happen if asteroid '2024 YR4' came into contact with Earth (SWNS)

“We are not worried at all, because of this 99 percent chance it will miss,” he said. “But it deserves attention.”

Now, the simulation video by MetaBallStudios’ Alvaro Gracia Montoya, shows what could happen if the asteroid hit planet Earth – and it’s pretty terrifying.

What happens if 2024 YR4 collides with Earth?

Given that it has enough power to destroy a whole city, the 3D animator said: “I don’t think it’s going to happen, but certainly this kind of news generates a lot of speculation.”

For context, the eight-megaton explosion could quite possibly be 500 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, with the energy released being the equivalent to eight megatons of TNT.

Although asteroid hunter David Rankin has told Space.com that ‘people should absolutely not worry about this yet’.

2024 YR4 has the power to wipe out an entire city (SWNS)

2024 YR4 has the power to wipe out an entire city (SWNS)

“Impact probability is still very low, and the most likely outcome will be a close approaching rock that misses us,” he added.

“Size and composition are big players in possible damage, along with impact location.”

Currently, the asteroid’s ‘risk corridor’ – the most likely geographical area it could impact – is from South America across the Atlantic Ocean to sub-Saharan Africa.

What we could do to protect the planet in event of a strike?

NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission proved to be a success in 2022, as they intentionally managed to crash a spacecraft into an asteroid as method of deflection.

The mission was a first-of-its-kind, and the DART spacecraft collided with Dimorphos, shortening its orbit by 32 minutes.

Hopefully we can just do that again?

Woman who loved her name had it 'ruined' by Amazon as people started making fun of her

Woman who loved her name had it 'ruined' by Amazon as people started making fun of her

She spoke about the moment she reached the ‘peak’ of her ‘torment’ over her name

Considering the majority of us carry the same name from the cradle to the grave, liking our moniker is quite essential.

If your parents did you royally dirty, you do have the option of legally changing it – or you could simply tweak your title like a ton of famous faces did after joining the showbiz world.

But this woman was seriously considering going by something else after experiencing years of ‘torment’ from people taking the p*ss out of her name.

And the blame for this lies with Amazon, according to Alexa Nizam.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out why she holds the online retailer, founded by Jeff Bezos, responsible for being teased.

But if the penny hasn’t dropped, it’s because the ‘virtual assistant’ device which Amazon put on the market in 2014 shares the same name as her.

As we all know, it’s voice activated and you get its attention by saying wake words such as ‘Alexa’ or ‘Amazon’, followed by a command.

The technology took the world by storm and every man and his dog has one in their home these days – but its popularity has been a huge pain for Nizam.

In an article for Business Insider shared last year, she explained that she ‘loved’ her name growing up, but that all changed when the gadget was launched over a decade ago.

“At first, the references were subtle,” Nizam explained. “While they should have gone with something more obscure, it hadn’t really affected me. I was so naïve.”

She says she’s heard every possible Alexa joke under the sun over the years, but revealed she really had a target on her back when working at a department store in 2018.

Nizam continued: “Within a few years, the mentions really picked up. At least once a day, a customer would make fun of my name. ‘What’s the weather today, Alexa?’

“‘What time is it, Alexa?’ Some would even say things like, ‘I bet you get those jokes all the time,’ as if they weren’t part of the onslaught themselves.”

She explained that she ‘couldn’t go a few hours’ without someone cracking a joke about her name – and it only got worse when the ‘Alexa, play Despacito’ meme came about.

Nizam said: “That cultural moment was the peak of my torment: I couldn’t introduce myself to anyone without having a dreaded Amazon moment.”

However, sharing the same name as Amazon’s gadget did allow her to come up with a good pun to write on her cap at her college graduation ceremony.

She went on: “I’d gone to college in Texas and planned to move back to my hometown of Los Angeles, so I decorated my grad cap to say, ‘Alexa, play ‘Going Back to Cali’.

“It felt like my one tiny win – if I had to be subjected to bad jokes for the better part of a decade, at least I could own the narrative for a brief, shining moment.”

Still, her first name caused chaos throughout her daily life – especially during the pandemic, when everyone was constantly on Zoom calls.

According to Nizam, any mention of her name on one of these calls resulted in pandemonium, as a string of virtual assistants would start going off in the background.

She’s still dealing with that issue these days too, however, she is now ‘back to loving her name again’.

“If anything, being able to say ‘Alexa, like the Amazon robot’ makes it more memorable when I meet new people,” Nizam joked.

“It’s actually helped cut back on the misnomers I used to get all the time: Alexis, Alexia, and Alex are (mostly) a thing of the past.”

But she still believes that Amazon should have chosen a ‘more obscure name’ for its product, pointing out that the company’s competitors have avoided regular names with their personal assistant devices.

A ‘risk corridor’ has been identified as asteroid 2024 YR4 has a 1 in 43 chance of hitting Earth

There’s a chance an asteroid is going to come hurtling through space and crash into Earth.

Yeah, OK, I know that sounds scary but when I say ‘chance’, I mean a 2.3 percent (1 in 43) chance. But hey, that’s still more than no chance at all.

Named 2024 YR4, the big bit of rock is travelling away from us at the moment, having passed by at a distance of 828,800 kilometres on Christmas Day 2024. It’s going to come back though, estimated to be getting pretty close in December 2032.

Measuring approximately 40 to 100 metres wide, people have been nicknaming the asteroid ‘the city destroyer’ as it has the capability of making quite the impact on Earth.

And with that, a NASA engineer has shared the countries that might be hit by the chunk of rock if it comes crashing down from space in seven years.

The current line from officials at the agency is that they are monitoring YR4 as an object of interest, so again, it’s really not something to be massively worrying about right now.

But if it does hit, NASA state that the damage would be ‘localised’ instead of us being wiped out like the dinosaurs.

Looking at this (small, small) possibility of collision, experts such as engineer with NASA’s Catalina Sky Survey Project David Rankin have drawn up a ‘risk corridor’.

Wired report that according to the asteroid’s current path, if it was to hit Earth, the experts reckon 2024 YR4 should fall somewhere in a band of territory stretching from northern South America, across the Pacific Ocean, to southern Asia, the Arabian Sea, and Africa. So, countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador would be at risk.

The space agency explain that as more observations of the asteroid’s orbit are obtained, ‘its impact probability will become better known’.

There's a very, very small chance of it hitting Earth (Getty Stock)

And in some good news, it adds that it’s possible that 2024 YR4 ‘will be ruled out as an impact hazard’ which has previously happened with many other objects that have previously been on the NASA JPL asteroid risk list.

However, the space agency does point out: “It is also possible its impact probability will continue to rise.”

In the rather unlikely event it does hit the planet in 2032, the asteroid would impact at a high velocity, said to be roughly 17 kilometres per second (around 38,000 miles per hour).

Kaley Cuoco claimed sex scenes with her ex on Big Bang Theory were added ‘to mess with her’

Kaley Cuoco claimed sex scenes with her ex on Big Bang Theory were added ‘to mess with her’

The show’s creator has denied it

The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco once claimed that she wondered whether she was given more sex scenes to do after she broke up with her co-star.

In the sitcom, one of the main relationship dramas is whether her character Penny will end up with Leonard (Johnny Galecki) or not, and they do end up getting over their ‘will they, won’t they’ to forge a proper relationship.

Just as the characters got together on the show, so too did their actors in real life, but the relationship wasn’t to last and the pair parted ways amicably and continued performing together.

Speaking to The Armchair Expert podcast in 2020, Cuoco said they ‘just fell mad for each other for two years’ and then broke up, but afterwards she thought that the sex scenes between their characters increased.

She said: “When we broke up, obviously it was a little sensitive for a minute, but I remember those weeks that Chuck had written these episodes where all of a sudden our characters were like sleeping together every other second.

“Johnny and I talk about it and I think he did that on purpose — just to f**k with us.

“If I was with him, I would ask him, because that came out of nowhere. All of a sudden these characters were all up on each other.”

This is a claim that The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre addressed and denied in the book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story.

He said: “No. Not at all. Making a good show has no room for f**king with anybody.

“There’s no, ‘Let’s mess with Kaley and Johnny’. The goal was to make a great show and make every minute of every episode count. And that was the only goal.

“We don’t have that kind of freedom to risk a TV series that you put your heart and soul into to mess with somebody’s head. No.

“I think that’s charming that they think we had the mental capacity to mess with them. Penny and Leonard having difficulty sustaining a relationship was one of the reasons to keep watching – to see if they could make it.

“You were rooting for them to find happiness.”

After the book was released, Galecki said it was ‘pretty egotistical of us to think that’ scenes had been put in to mess with them.

He said: “We were reading into things a little too much. I’m going to sleep a little easier tonight.”

Fans continued to shower X with praise, with one writing, “He’s adorable.” Another admired his behavior and curiosity, saying, “That little boy is very well-mannered and actively listening to all the things his dad is talking about. He will have a vocabulary that won’t stop. He is learning a lot.”

Another fan echoed this comment, “X was so well-behaved for a 4 yr old [sic] who had to withstand a fairly lengthy press conference!” Some couldn’t help but compare him to his father, “Handsome [sic] smart little boy like his dad 🇺🇸🙏.” Another user took a playful jab at Musk, “The kid behave is better than his own father, he’s not really normal [sic].”

Elon Musk shares X with Canadian singer Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher. Grimes later admitted that she had no idea about X’s unexpected public appearance, only finding out when a random X user praised her son for being “very polite.” The user added, “You raised him well,” highlighting how he even asked Trump to excuse him so he could use the bathroom.

The singer responded with a mix of concern and relief, “He should not be in public like this. I did not see this, thank u for alerting me. But I’m glad he was polite. Sigh.” Grimes has been keeping her distance from Musk ever since they parted ways. The two welcomed X in 2020, with Musk sharing a sweet photo of himself holding the newborn, wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Grimes and Musk initially named him X Æ A-12, with the singer explaining on X what the full name meant. She wrote, “•X, the unknown variable ⚔️ •Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence) •A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent 🤍+ (A=Archangel, my favorite song) (⚔️🐁 metal rat) [sic].”

Musk quickly corrected her, “SR-71, but yes,” and Grimes replied, “I am recovering from surgery and barely alive so may my typos b forgiven but, [expletive]. That was meant to be profound 🦔 [sic].” However, Musk and Grimes later changed their son’s name.

The news of the name change unfolded in a conversation on X. In a now-deleted interaction, a user known as @therealsainti asked “Did you change the baby name because of Californian laws? What is the baby’s new name?” Grimes answered “X Æ A-Xii.”

In another deleted comment, @obeah_mon noted, “Nice! Just removed the numbers to confirm to California law,” to which Grimes admitted, “Roman numerals. Looks better tbh.” David Glass, a family law attorney, also weighed in on the legitimacy of X’s full name in California, noting that it wouldn’t be accepted as valid by the state.

“In California, you can only use the ’26 characters’ of the English language in your baby name. Thus, you can’t have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols or emojis. Although an apostrophe, for a name like ‘O’Connor,’ is acceptable [sic],” he said.

Woman who ‘poisoned Christmas cake’ to ‘kill family’ found dead in prison cell

Woman who 'poisoned Christmas cake' to 'kill family' found dead in prison cell

Deise Moura dos Anjos was found dead in her prison cell this morning (13 February)

The woman that was accused of poisoning three members of her family with a Christmas cake has been found dead in her cell.

Deise Moura dos Anjos was held behind bars after being accused of lacing a traditional ‘Bolo de Natal’ cake with arsenic, and feeding it to in-laws, Tatiana Denize Silva dos Anjos, 43, Maida Berenice Flores da Silva, 58, and Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos, 65.

The cake was prepared and served by Zeli dos Anjos, Deise’s mother.

Two other relatives, Zeli’s niece Tatiana and her great-nephew Matheus, were found to be unwell and were subsequently treated in hospital, as Deise was accused of triple homicide and triple attempted homicide.

Jefferson, Neuza’s husband, was the only person that wasn’t hospitalised.

Her body was found this morning (13 February) in her cell, during daily checks.

In an official statement released by Brazilian police via CNN Brasil, they said: “The officers immediately provided first aid and called the Emergency Medical Service, which, upon arriving at the scene, confirmed the death.

“Deise was alone in the cell. The circumstances will be investigated by the Civil Police and the General Institute of Forensics.”

The horror events began to unfold on Christmas Eve last year, as the flour used to bake the traditional Christmas cake was later found to have used flour that contained the deadly substance known as arsenic.

Neuza and Maida would die in the early hours of 24 December, while Tatiana, Matheus and Zeli remained hospitalised, with Tatiana passing away on Christmas Day.

In the first week of January this year, Matheus was discharged from the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Hospital in Torres.

On 5 January, Deise was arrested for triple qualified homicide and three coutns of attempted suicide.

Three days later, it was found that police exhumed the body of Paulo Luiz dos Anjos, Zeli’s husband, who died in September.

Upon forensic examination, it was found that his body also contained traces of arsenic, suggesting that he too was poisoned.

A police spokesperson claimed that they found expired food products at the home, saying (via The Daily Record): “We even have information that there was mayonnaise there that had expired a year ago.

“There were expired products in the residence. A bottle was found, a medicine, which should have had capsules inside it and there were no capsules – there was a white liquid and this white liquid will also be examined.”

There were seven people in total at the house on 23 December, one of whom did not eat any of the Christmas cake.
