The asteroid could strike our home planet

Scientists say a new ‘city-destroying’ asteroid has a higher chance of hitting Earth than they first thought.

NASA found a pretty concerning asteroid in December last year which they’ve gone on to name 2024 YR4.

The space rock was initially spotted by an automated telescope in Chile and has since shot to the the top of the impact risk list maintained by US and European space agencies.

It is feared the asteroid could collide with Earth as early as 2032, with the European Space Agency previously predicting it has a 1.3 percent chance of hitting home on December 22 of that year.

Now, however, experts have upped the odds to 2.2 percent due to new information from telescopes.

Speaking to Yahoo News, Juan L Cano, of the ESA’s Planetary Defence Office, said: “The results are analysed on a daily basis, so we are updating the results every day with observations that are provided.

“We are retrieving that information, the new measurements in order to redo all the calculations on a daily basis. We are reaching the 2 percent today. Yesterday we reached 1.8 percent.”

Astronomers warn the percentage could continue to fluctuate too as new observations are made.

If the YR4 asteroid follows the patterns of other asteroids that have threatened Earth in the past, the chances of impact will rise and then fall again, reports CNN Science.

One such asteroid Apophis that was discovered in 2004 was once considered a risk to Earth, but scientists revised the warning in 2021 after examining its orbit.

So the more the space boffins can observe YR4, the more they can determine its size, trajectory and it’s possibility of colliding with Earth.

The blog post on the subject by NASA reads: “As more observations of the asteroid’s orbit are obtained, its impact probability will become better known. It is possible that asteroid 2024 YR4 will be ruled out as an impact hazard, as has happened with many other objects that have previously appeared on NASA’s asteroid risk list, maintained by NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.”

The International Asteroid Warning Network is continuing to monitor and track the asteroid as it will be visible throughout April. However, after that, if will be ‘too faint to observe’ up until June 2028.

Scientists stress the asteroid is still unlikely to strike (Getty Images)

According to experts, YR4 is estimated to be around 100 meters wide and could cause city-sized destruction if it was to strike.

However, Colin Snodgrass, a professor of planetary astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, essentially said we shouldn’t worry too much about it.

“Most likely this one will pass by harmlessly,” he said. “It just deserves a little more attention with telescopes until we can confirm that. The longer we follow its orbit, the more accurate our future predictions of its trajectory become.”

NASA also stresses the asteroid hitting Earth remains an ‘extremely low possibility’.

Speaking to Space.com, survey engineer Catalina Sky and asteroid hunter David Rankin also said similar calming messages.

The pair said: “People should absolutely not worry about this yet. Impact probability is still very low, and the most likely outcome will be a close approaching rock that misses us.”

Bridge connecting Asia to Europe has already made a $856,000,000 saving with another $4,280,000,000 in the next decade

The bridge spans 2,023 meters

The world’s longest suspension bridge is set to save Turkey an eye-watering $4.15 billion in the next decade.

Stretching across two continents, the incredible 1915 Çanakkale Bridge takes a matter of minutes to cross and has cut commute times by a huge 93 percent.

Turkish officials clearly had efficiency in mind when they decided to construct the 2,023 meter bridge.

Connecting Gelibolu, in the European side of Turkey, with the town of Lapseki in the Asian region in the country, it stretches from northwestern Turkey across the Dardanelles Strait, a passage of water connecting the Aegean Sea and the Sea or Marmara.

This means it connects two continents with tarmac and abandons the need for the 90-minute ferry to get to the other side.

So backpackers, travellers and commuters can reach the other side in just six minutes.

Despite its ‘1915’ reference, construction on the bridge started in March 2017 and was opened to the public five years later.

Turkish officials used the historically significant date in the name of the bridge to honor an important Ottoman victory in the First World War which sparked a chain of events that ultimately led to the declaration of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

It really is all in the details; the bridge’s 2,023 meter stretch pays homage to the year 2023, the year the country celebrated the centenary of the founding of the Turkish Republic.

Even the height of the bridge has some meaning behind it, with 318 meters symbolizing the date of March 18 when Turkey commemorates the soldiers killed during Gallipoli.

And its colossal span means it surpasses Japan’s famous Akashi Kaikyo Bridge built in 1998 by 32 meters, making it the world’s longest bridge.

Understandably, it cost a large sum of money to construct, racking up an eye-watering price of $2.7 billion.

However, the bridge is already reaping a number of rewards, both environmental and financial.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the country would save €415 million – so, $428 million – per year thanks to a reduction of fuel consumption and carbon emissions, as per AP.

That means, in the almost three years since Çanakkale Bridge’s opening, the country has already saved $856 million, according to President Erdoğan’s figures.

In the next decade, that yields a massive $4.15 billion – so it’s safe to say the initial cost of constructing the mammoth bridge was a worthy investment.

Aaron James underwent a 21-hour transplant surgery after surviving a high-voltage electrical accident in 2021

A US military veteran has received the world’s first eye transplant after suffering a devastating accident back in 2021, with researchers ‘truly amazed’ by his progress.

Aaron James, 46, was working as a high-voltage utility lineman when he survived a devastating electrical accident.

The dad had been holding a neutral wire when he was struck in the face by a live wire with a 7,200-volt charge.

Although Aaron’s life was spared, he lost most of his face in the incident before going through a facial tissue and eye transplant.

Incredibly, over one year on from the 21-hour surgery and Aaron is making huge progress, with his donor eye maintaining pressure, size and even blood flow.

The operation saw surgeons inject into James special stem cells from the person who donated the eye, in the hope of spurring the repair of the optic nerve.

But there’s one question that’s always asked – can Aaron see out of the transplanted eye?

(NYU Langone Health)

(NYU Langone Health)

Discussing Aaron’s incredible journey, YouTuber and doctor, @DrEyeGuy explained: “[Doctors] had to connect the eye muscles, create adequate blood supply to the outside and inner part of the eye, and they had to connect the donor optic nerve with Aaron’s optic nerve which is amazing.

“Now, unfortunately, he can’t see out of that eye, but I don’t want that to lessen the miracle here.

“They’re reporting good blood flow to the eye, the eye is able to hold its pressure, and they’re showing that the brain is actually receiving electrical signals through that optic nerve.

“If Aaron is able to develop any vision in that eye that’s going to be a crazy step.”

Researchers at NYU Langone Health are hopeful that one day, Aaron may be able to see out of the eye again.

“The outcomes we’re seeing after this procedure are quite incredible and could pave the way for new clinical protocols and inspire further research into complex transplants involving critical sensory organs,” said Dr Vaidehi Dedania, Aaron’s ophthalmologist.

In a study detailing the progress, authors explained that after evaluating the retina’s electrical response to light, they found that the light-sensitive nerves in the eye survived the transplant.

“This electrical response converts light into signals that ultimately the brain could interpret for vision, giving hope for the future of whole-eye transplants with an aim to restore sight,” they said.

Eduardo D. Rodriguez, senior author of the study and lead surgeon explained that the team are amazed with Aaron’s recovery.

“Our discoveries over the past year mark promising initial results, laying a foundation for further advancements and ongoing research,” he said.

“We are truly amazed by Aaron’s recovery, with no episodes of rejection. Our methodical approach to the matching process, ensuring that Aaron received the most favorable donor match, along with our unique immunosuppression regimen, has set the standard for eliminating and avoiding early rejection episodes.”

Meanwhile, speaking about his experience, Aaron added: “This has been the most transformative year of my life. I’ve been given the gift of a second chance, and I don’t take a single moment for granted.”

People are just discovering eerie reason why shoes were found in pairs at Titanic wreckage

The Titanic wreckage continues to home all sorts of historical items, but pairs of shoes are among the most chilling

The tragic sinking of the Titanic continues to fascinate the world over a century on.

The magnificent ship sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic ocean, resulting in the deaths of around 1,500 people.

There has been success in venturing to the wreckage of the Titanic, which lies in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, and the things discovered so far highlight what life was like at the time of the ship sinking in 1912.

(Getty Images)

There have been several items discovered around the ship wreckage, including musical instruments, clothes, and all manner of random fragments of daily life.

However, among the most surprising and chilling discovery was shoes – leading many to question why this is the case.

While shoes alone are of course not beyond the ordinary to discover among the wreckage – people wear shoes, right? – the more eerie discovering was the fact that the shoes were almost always found in pairs. It was hardly ever isolated shoes found.

The clothing items were so prevalent at the wreckage because the material used to make the shoes mainly consisted of leather.

They also contained a lot of tannic acid, which had preserved them at the bottom of the ocean. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that many of these shoes have in fact preserved more than the victims’ bodies of the tragic incident.

So why are the shoes from the wreckage found in pairs?

Well, the shoes themselves survived as the tannins in the leather made them unappealing to the life at the bottom of the ocean and therefore eroded more slowly.

In comparison, animals living at the bottom of the ocean, combined with the water itself, would have made short work of human remains.

One study found that placing a pig carcass roughly the same size as a human on the seabed resulted in it reduced to bones in as little as four days. The bones were totally gone after around six months.

So it makes sense that more than 100 years ago that there are no human remains left.

Hardy leather in these pairs of shoes also meant that they were able to resist the ravages of time better long after the person that occupied them was completely gone. This highlights how durable the leather was.

This is why both pairs of the shoes were often found in the Titanic wreckage, and makes the shoes the last vestiges of the Titanic boarders who tragically lost their life in the disaster.

A woman has been arrested in connection to the death of 27-year-old Telemundo Kansas City and Tico Sports sports anchor Adan Manzano.

The 27-year-old reporter and sports anchor for Telemundo Kansas City and Tico Sports passed away on Wednesday (February 5) while in New Orleans covering the Super Bowl, Telemundo Kansas City confirmed in a post to social media.

And a woman from Louisiana – with an alleged history of drugging people – has since been arrested in connection with Manzano’s death.

Telemundo Kansas City took to Facebook yesterday (February 6) to write: “We are sorry to share that Adan Manzano, reporter and sports anchor for Telemundo Kansas City passed away yesterday in New Orleans while on assignment to cover the Super Bowl for Telemundo KC and Tico Sports.

“[…] Adam was an exceptional professional and a rising star whose dedication and talent reflected excellence in his work. We will deeply miss Adam, his passion for sports and the contributions he made to the local community. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

The station confirmed it was ‘cooperating with authorities as they investigate this tragic event’.

On Thursday (February 6), a woman named Danette Colbert was detained on suspicion of fraud and theft after allegedly using Manzano’s credit card.

Kenner Police Chief, Keith Conley, said Colbert was allegedly seen on CCTV footage with Manzano on Wednesday morning at around 4:30am, The New York Times reports.

She was later allegedly seen leaving the reporter’s room alone.

Police report Colbert allegedly using Manzano’s credit card – that he used to check into his hotel – at multiple stores in the area.

Manzano’s credit card and cellphone were allegedly found at Colbert’s home after authorities obtained a warrant and searched it.

Colbert has previously pleaded guilty to fraudulently using a credit card in December 2019 and she was given five years probation.

Conley stated drugs were found in Colbert’s home alongside a gun however it’s not believe ‘the firearm is related to this case’.

Conley said: “This brings to light that there are people out there that prey on other people and bring them into their confidence and victimize them. These are the kind of things that can happen if you’re out in any city by yourself.”

Manzano’s cause of death has still not been determined or publicly released.

Earlier this week, Trump said he would be revoking the former president’s security clearance

President Trump has reportedly ordered security clearances be removed from a number of Democrat officials, after claiming Joe Biden ‘could not be trusted’.

Earlier this week, Trump said he would be revoking the former president’s security clearance and access to daily intelligence briefings, claiming that he can’t ‘be trusted’.

The president wrote on his Truth Social platform: “There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information.”

Trump claimed Biden had done the same to him when he came into office back in 2021, which was the first time an ex-president was blocked from the intelligence briefings.

“He instructed the Intelligence Community (IC) to stop the 45th President of the United States (ME!) from accessing details on National Security, a courtesy provided to former Presidents,” Trump wrote, adding: “The Hur Report revealed that Biden suffers from ‘poor memory’ and, even in his ‘prime’, could not be trusted with sensitive information.

“I will always protect our National Security.”

At the time, Biden said Trump’s ‘erratic behaviour’ was the deciding factor behind the move, explaining: “What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?”

According to The New York Post, Trump is now set to remove security clearances from a list of other Democrats, including Antony Blinken, ex-Secretary of State.

“Bad guy. Take away his passes,” Trump told the Post earlier this week. “This is to take away every right they have [revoking security clearances] including they can’t go into [federal] buildings.”

Also included in the list of officials is New York Attorney General Letitia James – who launched a civil fraud case against Trump last year, in which he was ordered to pay more than $450 million – and Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, who prosecuted Trump last year.

The move could prevent the officials from carrying out certain duties, as well as entering prisons or courthouses.

However, attorney Bob Costello explained it’s ‘more an insult and a slap in the face than a real deterrent’.

Other names on the list reportedly include Biden’s former National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan; former Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco; prosecutor Andrew Weissman; lawyer Mark Zaid and Norm Eisen, who was special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Trump’s impeachment.

Fans confused at Travis Kelce’s reaction to Donald Trump confirming Super Bowl appearance after POTUS said he ‘wasn’t a Taylor Swift fan’

Both Donald Trump and Taylor Swift will be in attendance on Sunday night

Fans have hit out at Travis Kelce after he told reporters it’s a ‘great honor’ to have President Trump in attendance at Sunday’s Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, no doubt hoping to secure an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl crown – which would be their fourth in six years.

The Chiefs and Eagles last competed in 2023’s Super Bowl, where the former rallied for a 38-35 win.

But during a media briefing on Wednesday (February 5), Chiefs tight-end Kelce sparked confusion when he reacted to news that Donald Trump is attending the match.

Trump is set to make history as the first ever sitting US president to attend the Super Bowl.

When asked by reporters how he feels about Trump’s attendance, NFL star Kelce responded: “That’s awesome, it’s a great honour.

“No matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life.

“Having the president there, it’s the best country in the world and that’s pretty cool.”

Kelce’s comments come months after his girlfriend, megastar Taylor Swift, and Trump clashed during the presidential election.

Swift made her support for Democratic Party leader Kamala Harris public knowledge on September 10, prompting Trump to say he was ‘not a fan of Taylor Swift’ during a Fox & Friends interview the following day.

He later took to social media platform Truth Social to vent that he ‘hated’ the singer.

Trump added that he liked Kelce ‘even though he may be a liberal and probably can’t stand me.’

Taking to X, fans were quick to question Kelce’s positive Trump comments, considering the previous fall-out.

One wrote: “Travis Kelce really saying all that like Trump didn’t run his girlfriend’s name through the mud lmao…”

A second agreed: “Travis Kelce gave a poor answer to the question abt trump being in attendance at the game.

“There were plenty of ways he could’ve avoided answering the question without saying it was an honor.” They added: “Trump is causing so much harm to marginalized communities, people are allowed to be upset.”

But a third defended: “No I don’t care that Travis Kelce said that it’s an honor to have the President watch him play because it’s the President and he’s a PR trained athlete for a team from MISSOURI.

“His answer was very direct, and he probably would have said the same thing if it wasn’t Trump.”

Kelce’s brother, former Eagles center Jason Kelce, confirmed Swift would also be cheering on the Chiefs at Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Elsewhere, Trump has praised Kelce’s team-mate, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who also welcomed the announcement that Trump will be in New Orleans.

“I didn’t see that clip but obviously it’s cool to hear that he’s seen me play football and respects the game that I play,” Mahomes said. “It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president, someone in the top position in our country.”

Donald Trump Signs Executive Order That Targets Trans Women In Spor

One of the many new orders Trump has signed in his month of being president will see trans people prohibited from joining the military and another will see trans women no longer taken to female prisons upon their arrest.

A new transgender focused order was signed this week banning trans women from female sports.

‘Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports’ will see the governmnent ‘change everything having to do with the Olympics and having to do with this absolutely ridiculous subject’ before the 2028 Olympic Summer Games scheduled in LA.

This order put pressure on the IOC to change standards of governing sporting events ‘to promote fairness, safety and the best interests of female athletes by ensuring that eligibility for participation in women’s sporting events is determined according to sex and not gender identity or testosterone reduction’.

The order also wants to see ‘immediate reinforcement’ against education facilities and athletic associations that deny women single-sex sports and single-sex changing rooms.

As well as calling for the secretary of state and the Department of Homeland Security to ‘review and adjust, as needed, policies permitting admission to the United States of males seeking to participate in women’s sports’.

Trump said:  “From now on, women’s sports will be only for women.

“We’ve gotten the woke lunacy out of our military and now we’re getting it out of women’s sports.”

“In Los Angeles in 2028, my administration will not stand by and watch men beat and batter female athletes. We’re not going to let it happen.

“Just to make sure, I’m also directing our secretary of homeland security to deny any and all visa applications made by men attempting to fraudulently enter the US while identifying as women athletes to try and get into the games.”
