The man in question was still receiving his full salary over this period

We’ve all grown fed up with our jobs at point over our careers, but this guy grew so tired of his job that he simply stopped going.

People who wish to leave their jobs will usually tell their superiors of their intentions and will then work a notice period (unless you take a leaf out of Piers Morgan’s book and quit your job on live TV, that is).

Joaquín didn’t do either of these things, however. Instead, he simply stopped showing up.

While most bosses would notice if an employee didn’t show up for work one day, Joaquín went a whole six years before his company realized.

Joaquín was a building supervisor for a water treatment plant in Cádiz, Spain, and had been employed by the local government for more than 20 years.

But, as time went on, the work environment became increasingly stressful, leading Joaquín to adopt a rather unconventional approach to coping: he simply stopped showing up.

By what could only be described as a miracle, this trick worked for him for six whole years.

As to how Joaquín got away with it for so long, it seems to have come down to a mix of bureaucratic oversight, the complex structure of the workplace, and a generous dose of luck.

His absence was conveniently overlooked due to a mix-up between two departments, each assuming the other was responsible for overseeing his duties.

The situation took a hilarious turn when Joaquín was nominated for an award for his 20 years of service to the company. Imagine the surprise of his supervisors when they called him in for the ceremony and discovered he hadn’t set foot in the office for six years.

Over this time frame, Joaquín was still paid is annual $41,500 salary. Upon being found out, he was ordered to pay back just $30,000 (the maximum he could reportedly be penalized for).

Deputy mayor Jorge Blas went on to speak to Spanish newspaper El Mundo about the incident.

I wondered whether he was still working there, had he retired, had he died? But the payroll showed he was still receiving a salary,” he said.

“I called him up and asked him, ‘What did you do yesterday? The month before, the month before that?’ He didn’t know what to say,” Jorge went on.

I’d hazard a guess that ‘f**k all’ wasn’t the reply he was looking for from Joaquín…

Wife of Apollo astronaut reveals husband's strange 'encounters' with UFOs he told her before he died

Edgar Mitchell was a former NASA pilot who worked on early space missions

The wife of a late NASA astronaut has opened up on the stories he used to tell her about UFOs.

Being in space is a huge thing, and only a select group of people will ever get to do it in their lifetimes.

So, of course they’ve seen things that us mere mortals will never get to set our eyes on.

But UFOs? Apparently so.

According to the wife of an Apollo astronaut, her husband used to tell her secrets about what he really saw in space.

Anita Mitchell was married to the late NASA pilot Edgar Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the moon in 1971.

She told the Daily Mail that he had encounters with strange things, and that it wasn’t unusual to see something out of the ordinary.

She said: “He always felt that there were UFOs out there, because so many of the pilots and astronauts had seen something.”

She claims that some of his crewmates, including Apollo astronaut James McDivitt, reported seeing mysterious objects, such as a strange craft.

Mitchell shared: “I remember Gordy [Project Mercury astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper Jr.] telling us at a dinner party in our house that he had seen something.

“He said, ‘Listen, we have nothing that goes that fast and goes that high’.”

Cooper took part in the Mercury and Gemini projects, and was part of the early missions.

She has now got so many stories from ex NASA astronauts that she decided to tell it all in a new book, titled ‘You Don’t Look Like An Astronaut’s Wife’.

She was married to her husband from 1973 to 1984, and the astronaut died in 2016.

However, he has always been open about what he believed to be in space, and even pushed the US government reveal all to the public about the potential alien life.

In 2009, he asked for the release of information which he alleged the US government was hiding about UFOs.

At the time he said, as per The Guardian: “We are being visited. It is now time to put away this embargo of truth about the alien presence. I call upon our government to open up … and become a part of this planetary community that is now trying to take our proper role as a spacefaring civilisation.”

The former NASA pilot warned: “The sun will burn out in due course, and we have to be off this planet if our species is to survive. At this point in human history on this planet, we’re now starting, and should be, to reach out beyond our planet and then beyond our solar system to find out what is really going on out there.”

Mitchell said that she also believes what her late husband did, stating: “Do you really think we are the only intelligence in the universe? Because if we are, the universe is in trouble.”

After her husband left NASA, he went on to found the Institute of Noetic Sciences to investigate paranormal issues, and that he conducted experiments around extrasensory perception and to see if it was possible to bend metal telepathically.

Apple warns billions of iPhone users to update immediately or risk 'extremely sophisticated attack'

Apple warns billions of iPhone users to update immediately or risk 'extremely sophisticated attack'

Apple has explained how criminals could exploit the situation

Apple has called on its users to ensure their devices are up to date or risk a cyberattack by criminals hoping to gain access to their phones.

Phone technology has come a long way in the last couple decades but as things have gotten more sophisticated so have the criminals looking to exploit users.

Apple is well aware of this and has called on iPhone users to download its latest iOS after the company identified a major security flaw.

The fix is expected to protect users from a ‘extremely sophisticated attack’ that is exploiting a critical zero-day vulnerability.

Releasing a statement earlier this week, Apple said: “This is a supplementary fix for an attack that was blocked in iOS 17.2.”

The vulnerability was identified within Webkit, the browser engine used in Safari and all other internet browsers created for the iPhone or iPad.

Exploiting this, hackers can create malicious websites that allow them access to other smartphone areas outside of a victim’s web browser if they visit these fake websites.

Speaking about this Apple also said the latest zero-day vulnerability was likely used in a cyber-attack on ‘specific targeted individuals,’ using Apple’s software updates which were older than iOS 17.2.

Apple released iOS 17.2 way back in December 2023 so if you haven’t done so already, a quick update is more than justified.

Speaking to UNILAD, Sarunas Sereika, a senior product manager at cybersecurity company Surfshark, emphasized the importance of ensuring all of your tech products are updated.

He said failure to do this can open up a person to cyber attacks and malware, that the updates would otherwise address.

He said: ”You have to keep your software up to date.

“Sometimes that means you need a newer phone, but in this case, simply keep your software up to date to eliminate any back doors for hackers.”

Updating your phone can help protect you from cyber attacks and criminals (Getty Stock)

He also noted that criminals having access to your phone could prove more disastrous than you might imagine.

He added: “Personal data is being stolen and that includes not only name, but typically, your credentials, your emails, your financial data.

“That is actually identity theft which could lead to further fraudulent transactions, financial losses, or just simply emotional distress knowing that someone has just taken your data.”

So not only would a victim have to worry about someone pretending to be them over the internet, but this could also result in criminals using the identity to commit further attacks or scams on other unsuspecting individuals.

Elon Musk sparks outrage after retweeting post claiming Hitler and Mao 'didn't murder millions'

Elon Musk faced a fierce backlash online

Elon Musk is no stranger to controversy, but his latest retweet has got people up in arms on social media.

Despite being a billionaire and head of a bunch of companies, Musk manages to find plenty of time to be chronically online, most notably on Twitter.

While many of his posts and retweets are centered around his many companies like Tesla and SpaceX, he also posts videos centered around American politics.

This is all normal enough, but his latest retweet has outraged people on Twitter as he shared a post that attempted to downplay the role Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong had on the deaths of millions.

The retweeted post read: “Stalin, Mao, and Hitler didn’t murder millions of people. Their public sector workers did.”

It didn’t take long for people to hit out against Musk for sharing the post.

One person commented: “Is this the – seriously disturbed and flawed – reasoning why Elon thinks Hitler is so cool? Sieg Heil, Elon – enjoy your burning swasticars…”

With another upset Twitter user adding: “Elon Musk is disgusting POS. I hate him & I hope he starts receiving what he deserves.”

With a third commenting: “Elon Musk to publish anything like this is unbelievable. Shame on you.”

And another hit out at Musk and wrote: “On. Their. Orders.

“These men were dictators. They ORDERED massacres. You can add Putin to that list.

“Elon Musk is again, minimizing the danger of dictatorships and the horrible of living under one. That salute was exactly what the world thought it was!”

As well as normal Twitter users, Lee Saunders, the union president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees of the AFL-CIO took issue with Musk and hit back at him.

He replied: “America’s public service workers — our nurses, teachers, firefighters, librarians — chose making our communities safe, healthy and strong over getting rich. They are not, as the world’s richest man implies, genocidal murderers.”

He added: “Elon Musk and the billionaires in this administration have no idea what real people go through every day. That’s why he’s so willing to take a chainsaw to people’s jobs, Medicaid, Social Security and Medicare.”

This comes after Musk faced accusations that he made a Nazi salute during Trump’s inauguration.

He dealt with these accusations by taking to Twitter to make a series of jokes and puns regarding notorious Nazi leaders.

Chilling reason Jeff Bezos' bodyguard has 'fake arms' after video resurfaces showing edgy interaction

The Amazon CEO’s bodyguard’s arm has been called into question after a tense fan exchange

A video of an Amazon customer approaching Jeff Bezos has sparked questions online about his bodyguard’s fake arm, and the reason behind it.

Approaching your celebrity idol isn’t an uncommon thing to do, but when one man walked up to Amazon CEO and founder Bezos in the middle of the street, things appeared tense.

The unnamed man pointed the camera towards the billionaire and his stern bodyguard, as he said: “Mr Bezos, I love what you do with Amazon. Hey, I’m a Prime customer, what’s above being a Prime customer?”

As he began to speak, Bezos’s guard began to look around the area, namely behind and beside him and away from the man, while holding one of his fingers in his hand.

Bezos answered: “Thank you, I thank you for being a customer. I really appreciate it.”

While it could seem like a normal interaction between a fan and a celeb, something wasn’t right with the vibe.

That’s because the bodyguard’s arm appeared to be stiff, almost as if it was fake.

Now, we’ve all seen the video of King Charles III’s bodyguard’s fake hand, and this looks very similar to it.

People in the comments of the YouTube video seemed to agree, with one person writing: “Yea that’s a fake arm big time. I bet he has a mp5 or similar under there.”

Another stated, “He’s got his real left hand on a firearm”, while someone else wrote: “He had it aimed at him.”

So, what reason would he have to wear a fake arm?

The general consensus is that he was concealing a firearm to protect Bezos.

On Quora, many professionals speculated the reason for a fake arm or hand, with one writing: “The reason being are misdirection and shorten response time when things get bad. There is a video on youtube where a random guy walk in to him on the street just to say hi.

“If you look at the bodyguard’s hand, it looks so stiff…its kind of made out of rubber or something. And he looks so tense and ready just after he heard that his boss, Jeff Bezos, responded to that friendly guy.

“At a time, he probably had so many worse case scenerio in his head including killing this random guy.”

Another shared that it’s actually a former U.S. Navy SEAL named Mike D, who lost his ‘arms in a combat-related incident while serving in the military’.

The person claimed that the man ‘has continued to lead a successful career, including working in personal security’ and that his ‘prosthetic arms has not hindered his ability to perform his duties effectively’.

Whether or not this man is in fact Mike D hasn’t been proven, and a quick Google search shows up no results.

But the general belief is that he is a man with a fake arm, hiding a firearm to protect his boss by any means necessary.

However, another shared that Bezos’ executive protection team is ‘most likely drawn from the ranks of former USSS (Secret Service) agents, whose ‘hands-ready’ posture is often so practiced and motionless that the agents’ arms can seem artificial.’

So, maybe it’s not a fake arm, it’s a pretend fake arm?

She explained: “There’s no rational reason for anyone protecting Bezos to wear a ‘tactical prosthetic’, if only because his close protective detail is his entire protective detail.”

The professional went on to say that a fake arm could cause issues during an emergency event, writing: “If you only have three close-protection folks on you, one of them trying to evacuate their principal with a fake arm swinging around is going to cause more problems than solutions.”

Instead, she theorized that it’s all for show, and that Bezos’s money is better spent elsewhere.

She concluded: “And the fact that Amazon pays $1.6 million each year for Bezos’ private, non-work security—the largest budget of any public company in the world, although Facebook’s Zuck is a close second—means much more effort goes into collecting intelligence and movement planning than acquiring bespoke prosthetics for gunfights.”

Heartbreaking 911 call reveals woman pleading for help after neighbor opened fire on her and husband

The woman was fearful that she would be killed as she pleaded for police to arrive

A woman made a desperate call to authorities after her neighbor shot at her and her husband in a wild attack.

A woman frantically tried to call the police and begged for them to send officers to her home after she and her husband had been shot at by her neighbor.

The incident occurred at their New Jersey home earlier this week.

The woman and her husband had reportedly been feuding with the neighbor for years, however, it isn’t clear what happened, if anything, to turn the feud violent.

Woman charged after stepson ‘imprisoned for 20 years’

The woman who was shot in the attack said the shooter was her neighbor, who has been identified as John Adamo.

A 911 conversation revealed her panicked response after Adamo began shooting. She even believed her husband had been killed and was fearful for her own life.

Speaking to a 911 dispatcher, she said: “My husband, I think he’s dead outside and my leg is killing me. I’m in the left leg — my husband I think — at least 3 rounds. Oh my God.

“There’s blood everywhere. It looks like a f****** rifle. It looked like a rifle. Please hurry.

“Please get the cops here, I’m bleeding to death. I can’t leave my kids,” the wife said on the 911 call.

She continued: “If I do, please tell them that I love them.”

Neither the husband or the wife were killed but their conditions were considered critical and they were both airlifted to the hospital. They are now both recovering, the current status is not clear.

After firing at the pair, Adamo then went back inside his house.

SWAT teams were called to the Jersey Shore town of Berkeley Township and surrounded the home before blasting the doors with explosives and breaching the property.

When they did, they discovered Adamo in an upstairs bedroom deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police have confirmed that, over the past year, they have responded to the homes at least six times. However, they have not yet given a possible motive for the shooting.

A resident who lives up the street from the couple spoke to the local media about the incident.

Resident Nico Rispoli said that Adamo was known for being ‘very obnoxious’ and frequently sat in his garage blasting heavy metal at extremely high volumes.

He said: “There were definitely arguments that led up to this.”

Warning issued to people planning on drinking Baby Guinness during St. Patrick's Day

Warning issued to people planning on drinking Baby Guinness during St. Patrick’s Day

Warning issued to people planning on drinking Baby Guinness during St. Patrick's Day

Make sure you’re drinking Baby Guinness and not chugging rotten clumps of dairy

St. Patrick’s Day is almost upon us and while some people really don’t need much of a reason to drink they’re going to use the occasion as one anyway.

Some folks will take the chance to chug and glug their way through all manner of alcohol, though many will be trying to stick to the usual tipple of the occasion and stay on Guinness.

A plethora of pubs and bars are standing ready with taps primed and glasses polished for you to ‘split the G’, and then have an argument with your friends over exactly what classes as splitting the G.

For those of you who aren’t planning on quaffing pints of stout all night you might be on the Baby Guinness instead, a drink so named because when you make it the thing looks like a miniature measure of Guinness even though it doesn’t actually contain any.

Baby Guinness is a mixture of coffee liqueur and Baileys, and if you fancy mixing some yourself for St. Patrick’s Day you might want to check your ingredients.

"It looks like a little pint of Guinness, how adorable. Is it supposed to have bits in it? (Getty Stock Photo)

Just to be on the safe side here, you do know that Baileys goes off don’t you?

While it’s got a pretty decent shelf life you’d best be aware that if that bottle of Baileys has been sitting at the back of the fridge for yonks it might not be in such a drinkable condition any more.

Baileys say you can safely keep their drink at a decent temperature for around a couple of years before it curdles but it you’ve had some left over in the fridge forever it might be time to freshen up the supplies.

You wouldn’t want to spoil your Baby Guinness with curdled Baileys and be taking shots tainted by a congealed, lumpy mess.

Yuck.

If you are planning on chucking any out, there’s something else you should be aware of, too.

"For best results drink before 2019... oh dear. Babe, could you go to the shop please?" (Artur Widak/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

“For best results drink before 2019… oh dear. Babe, could you go to the shop please?” (Artur Widak/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

Baileys can play absolute havoc with your plumbing and even end up blocking your pipes if you’re unlucky.

This is due to the ingredients in the drink, which are a huge no-no for drains.

Since dairy cream contains a lot of fat, it puts Baileys in the list of things that should never go down your sink – with the big three being fat, oil and grease.

Instead, you’re best pouring the liquid contents into a container and then chucking that in your bin.

Whatever you do, don’t pour it into the bin directly either or it’ll probably end up all over the kitchen floor when you come to empty the bins.

Additional words by Lucy Devine.

Explosive radio transcript revealed as Lewis Hamilton loses it with Ferrari race engineer at Australian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton finished in 10th place in the first race of the 2025 Formula One World Championship

An exchange between Lewis Hamilton and his new team at Ferrari during the Australian Grand Prix has been released.

Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One champion, raced in Ferrari colours for the first time after 12 years with Mercedes.

The Brit made his highly-anticipated debut at Albert Park in Melbourne, to huge expectations from fans.

Unfortunately, Hamilton finished in 10th place, while teammate Charles Leclerc finished two places ahead in eighth.

As for the podium, fellow Brit Lando Norris came out on top, ahead of world champion Max Verstappen and another Brit in George Russell in a dramatic race which saw a place change after the final result.

Hamilton’s performance seemingly got to him during the race too, as he voiced his frustrations to race engineer Riccardo Adami and his team over the radio.

The communication between the 40-year-old and his team made headlines alone, as Hamilton swore when he was told of his new position at a point in the race, which was ninth.

Following the conclusion of the race this morning, the transcript of the team’s exchanges have been released, and here is a snippet of one of Hamilton and Adami’s exchanges:

Hamilton: “Let me know where I am slow. Struggling with drive-ability. The car is snappy.”

Adami: “Turns 11 and 12… You can use K1 when you are close.”

Hamilton: “Leave me to it, please.”

Adami: “K1 available.”

Hamilton: “Yes, I know. Leave me to it, please.”

Later, the driver would say that he lost gear sync, even giving the engineer more advice, saying: “Please leave it… Just leave me to it with the DRS. It’s not an issue.”

That wasn’t the end, though.

Adami: “Try to hold the K1. Just for practice. I know it’s difficult.”

Hamilton: “I’m not close enough! I’m not close enough. When I’m close, I’ll do it.”

In more frosty words, Hamilton later said to his team: “I thought you said it wasn’t going to rain much? We just missed a big opportunity there,” to which Adami simply said: “Understood.”

During his post-race interview with Sky Sports, Hamilton claimed his car was ‘really hard to drive’, explaining that it went ‘a lot worse’ than he thought at first.

He added: “It was very tricky… It went a lot worse than I thought it would go, the car was really hard to drive today. I’m grateful I kept it out of the wall, that’s where it wanted to go most of the time.”

Hamilton went on: “A lot to take [in], different power unit in the wet, different driving and setup on the steering wheel. And the guidance of how much more rain was coming… we missed out.

“The information I got was that it was a short shower, and real quick, and it was just the last corner. But then more came.”

Former F1 driver Karun Chandhok later said in an analysis on Sky Sports that both parties need to understand what kind of communication Hamilton wants, adding that ‘they need to find their feet’.

Adolescence star reveals four-word comment from Netflix series that was completely off script

Owen Cooper recalled a memorable off-script moment that was kept in the Netflix series

An emerging star from new drama series Adolescence has revealed an amazing bit of improvisation that happened while filming.

The Netflix miniseries consists of four hour-long episodes that are filmed in continuous one-hour long takes.

It stars Stephen Graham, who has teamed up with Boiling Point director Philip Barantini again, having worked together on the kitchen-based series that was also shot in one take.

The play-inspired method of shooting can produce some memorable, raw moments in front of the camera, something you wouldn’t get with regularly-shot titles, which stop and start shooting with each scene.

Actor Owen Cooper, who plays Jamie Miller, has received lots of praise for his role on the show, and what makes it even more impressive is the fact that it’s the child actor’s first gig.

To give you some context, the series follows Graham, who plays Jamie’s father, as the boy is accused of stabbing another child to death.

Cooper has been described as a ‘spectacular newcomer’, and has already had a number of noteworthy moments on screen.

However, in one of his scenes, something he did by accident ended up making the cut due to another cast member thinking quickly on her feet.

The actress in question is Erin Doherty, who plays psychologist Briony Ariston.

While guest starring on The One Show, Graham and Cooper spoke about their new show, with the latter coming across as confident and well-spoken when faced with questions about his first time on a TV set.

Cooper explained that both him and Doherty needed to ‘bounce off each other’ as the episode didn’t follow the script.

The hosts then mentioned a ‘yawn moment’ from the episode, which Cooper recalled: “In episode three, it was the second take of the day – we do two takes a day, so it was the second take and you know I was tired so a yawn came to me.

“Then Erin did an amazing line, she said ‘am I boring you?’ so that took me back and it made made me smile because it wasn’t in the scripts, I wasn’t expecting that at all so it took me back a little bit but it was amazing,” he revealed.

Graham further explained the point, highlighting that even though Cooper was ‘feeling the pressure’, he was ‘in the moment’.

“That’s all we’re trying to do isn’t it, be present, be in the moment and with this kind of way of filmmaking, it really helps you to do that,” the British actor explained.

It turns out things changed after the chequered flag was waved

The first race of the new Formula One season has finished in Australia and it’s turned out to be a win for Lando Norris.

He held off four-time world champion Max Verstappen to finish first, while George Russell was the third man standing on the podium once the chequered flag had been waved.

Just a few seconds behind them was Williams driver Alex Albon, who crossed the finish line after Kimi Antonelli but scored fourth place as the Mercedes driver was hit with a five second penalty to knock him down to… oh no hang on a minute.

In bad news for Albon his fourth place finish at the Australian Grand Prix was undone after F1 announced that Antonelli’s five second penalty would be overturned.

Sorry Alex.

Earlier on in the race Antonelli was judged to have been released into Nico Hulkenberg’s path in the pit lane, resulting in the Mercedes driver being slapped with a five second penalty that landed him behind Albon in the final standings at the Australian Grand Prix.

Antonelli had started the race in P16 and fought to make it all the way to P4 before the penalty knocked him down a place in the final standings, but he and Albon have been switched back after it was reviewed and removed.

Mercedes petitioned for a ‘right of review’ for their man Antonelli and at a hearing they presented ‘video from the roll hoop camera which was previously unavailable’.

The new footage, along with a video taken from a helicopter that stewards hadn’t seen, led race officials to decide that Antonelli shouldn’t have had a penalty after all.

“It is clear that Car 12 did not cross into the fast lane until a significant distance down the pit lane and only after the driver checked his mirror to confirm clearance with Car 27,” the stewards said in their reasoning.

“The roll hoop camera shows that he had sufficient room to safely pass the McLaren pits without risk to the McLaren mechanics.”

Being bumped back up into fourth place means that Antonelli picks up two extra points in the standings.

Since this is the first race of the season the standings are essentially a carbon copy of the race results, but the Australian Grand Prix really was Lando Norris’ to dominate as he picked up pole position and fastest lap along with the win.

McLaren and Mercedes teams are tied for the Constructor’s Championship after the first race on 27 points apiece, as Lando Norris won the race but his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished ninth.

Antonelli being bumped back up to fourth meant that he and third-placed George Russell also scored the same amount of points.

F1 returns next week for the Chinese Grand Prix.
