The Santa Fe doctor’s claims could change a lot of what we know about Hackman and Arakawa’s case

There have been more developments in the case of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, who were found dead just feet apart in their Sante Fe home.

Hackman, 95, a two-time Oscar winner in his illustrious career, may not have known that his wife died for up to a week before his own death, as he passed on 18 February due to ‘hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributory factor’.

Betsy Arakawa, 65, was said to have passed away due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare infectious disease that begins with flu-like symptoms and progressively gets worse, on 11 February.

It was reported that the former actor was found in a mudroom, partially mummified, with Arakawa found in the bathroom with bloating and mummification on her body, surrounded by pills.

While a post-mortem examination revealed that Arakawa died of the rare rat-borne respiratory disease on 11 February, a Santa Fe doctor has made a bold claim about the timing of her death.

Dr Josiah Child is a former emergency care specialist that runs Cloudberry Health in the couple’s local area in New Mexico, US.

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, on Friday (14 March), he claimed: “Mrs Hackman didn’t die on February 11 because she called my clinic on February 12.”

Dr Child went on: “She’d called me a couple of weeks before her death to ask about getting an echocardiogram [heart scan] for her husband.

“She was not a patient of mine, but one of my patients recommended Cloudberry to her. She made an appointment for herself for February 12. It was for something unrelated to anything respiratory,” he said.

Dr Child further added that two days before the appointment, she allegedly cancelled due to Hackman feeling unwell.

“She called back on the morning of February 12 and spoke to one of our doctors who told her to come in that afternoon,” he said.

“We made her an appointment but she never showed up. She did not show any symptoms of respiratory distress. The appointment wasn’t for anything related to hantavirus. We tried calling her a couple of times with no reply.”

If true, these claims would dispel the conclusions that were drawn by the coroner, as she would have been alive for at least a day longer than first thought.

Dr Child concluded: “I am not a hantavirus expert but most patients who have that diagnosis die in hospital.

“It is surprising that Mrs Hackman spoke to my office on the phone on February 10 and again on February 12 and didn’t appear in respiratory distress.”

LADbible had contacted the Santa Fe Medical Examiner for comment on the claims.

Hackman’s pacemaker revealed that he died on 18 February, and a post-mortem found that he had no food in his stomach.

One of the couple’s three dogs, Zinna, was also found to have died of starvation and dehydration, after being found in a bathroom cupboard by the Santa Fe Fire Department.

However, their other two dogs survived.

Fire Chief Brian Moya told USA Today that Bear and Nikita sadly took them to the bodies of their deceased owners.

“They realised (the dog) was trying to say, ‘Hey, come over here! Come over here!’” Moya explained.

The first responders then followed one of the dogs to a mudroom where Hackman’s body was found.

At last, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are finally coming home

The stranded NASA astronauts Sunita ‘Suni’ Williams and Barry ‘Butch’ Wilmore are finally going to get to return to Earth after the SpaceX capsule scheduled to bring them home docked with the International Space Station (ISS).

It’s been a very long stay in space for the pair, who were only supposed to be on board the ISS for a few days last year but became stranded after technical issues with the capsule that was set to bring them to Earth left them stuck up there.

Granted, there are worse places to be than up in space, though the astronauts have admitted that they can feel that the prolonged period of time in space has had an effect on their bodies.

Early this morning (16 March) a SpaceX capsule docked with the ISS and brought four new crew members on board as part of the Crew-10 complement.

There’s now room for Wilmore and Williams to depart the space station along with fellow NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Wilmore and Williams won’t be leaving the ISS immediately, but they are scheduled depart on Wednesday (19 March) so barring further technological hitches in their return journey they’ll be back within a week.

When they do get back the astronauts will need to undergo a period of rehabilitation so their bodies can readjust to gravity once more.

A NASA spokesperson previously told LADbible: “All NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station undergo routine medical evaluations, have dedicated flight surgeons monitoring them, and are in good health.”

Going into space can weaken your bone density and lead to loss of muscle mass, so it’ll take some time before the pair are back in tip top condition.

While they have far outstayed the initial parameters of their mission to space, the pair have not been idle as they’ve taken the extra time to conduct a number of experiments in space.

But despite being in space for months when they were only meant to be there for a few days, Wilmore and Williams won’t be receiving overtime pay as retired NASA astronaut Cady Coleman revealed.

She explained that they’ll get a little bit of cash for ‘incidentals’ which won’t amount to much but otherwise they’ll be paid as normal as it’s basically just like a work trip.

Williams previously said that the long stay had been hardest on their families, saying: “It’s been a roller coaster for them, probably a little more so than for us.”

She later explained: “We came up prepared to stay long, even though we planned to stay short. That’s what we do in human space flight.

“That’s what your nation’s human space flight program is all about, planning for unknown, unexpected contingencies. And we did that.”

Thankfully it’ll soon be time to come home.

Bridgette Salatin from Ohio, US, warned against ‘ego lifting’ at the gym

A fitness instructor has issued a warning to others looking to lift beyond their means in the gym following a terrifying health ordeal nearly two years ago.

Back in April 2023 Yoga instructor Bridgette Salatin, 33, was lifting some heavy weights in a home gym when she suddenly began feeling dizzy and got a ‘really bad’ headache.

She was doing some 70kg barbell squats at the time, which the mum-of-three claimed caused her to have a stroke and rip open an artery in her neck.

After the exercise, she got a piercing headache, followed by a sharp pain from her shoulders to her right temple, before collapsing to the ground.

She called what she did ‘ego lifting’, and though she had no feeling in her right arm, the yoga instructor put it down to a tensed nerve or pulled muscle, only seeking medical help a week after.

Medics told her she had suffered a stroke that was caused by a vertebral artery dissection, simply known as a tear that formed a blood clot.

Reflecting on the incident, Bridgette puts it down to the fact that she didn’t eat or sleep enough the night before, and held her breath before lifting a weight that was beyond her capabilities in the first place.

The American added that she has had three ‘mini strokes’ since and has been diagnosed with occipital neuralgia, a painful neurological condition that can cause sharp, shooting pains in the neck and back of the head.

Now, the gym fanatic only squats with lighter weights, and has made her return to fitness in the past month or so.

Nearly two years on from the horrific incident, the she’s has urged others not to go too hard or ‘ego-lift’ while they work out, as it could also result in a serious health condition.

The Ohio-native spoke of the day of the incident: “When I woke up that day I had a pain in my neck but I thought I’d probably just slept on it funny.

“I was squatting and I had a barbell on my back. I started to get a really bad headache.”

She explained that 155 lbs (70kg) in total on her back, noting that she ‘had no business’ attempting that weight as she was ‘very, very skinny’.

Upon reflection, Bridgette thinks the fact that she was more muscular two years prior pushed her to go the extra mile.

“I was holding my breath and felt this sharp pain shoot up all the way from my shoulder to my ear, to my right temple and I fell. I didn’t do anything about that,” she explained.

“I thought I had tensed a nerve or pulled a muscle pretty hard.”

When she went to hospital a week later, she remembered: “They did a few scans on me and they said ‘you’ve had a stroke’ but how in the world does that happen at the age of 31?

“I felt an instant grief. I thought ‘I’ve failed myself’ and ‘am I ever going to be right again?’. I felt like I lost a sense of myself,” noting that she hasn’t been the same since.

The fitness enthusiast is adamant that she didn’t feel other signs of a stroke, and after months of bed rest and over a year of taking blood thinner medication, her artery healed in August 2024.

She noted: “My short-term memory is gone and doing everyday things is hard for me.

“I used to teach a yoga class that was strictly on learning headstands but I can’t do that anymore.”

Admitting that she has a different view of exercise as a whole, she is now more wary of how much she eats and sleeps from day to day, while advising others to start with lower weights at the gym and finding ‘a good balance’ to challenge yourself without causing any pain.

“Don’t push yourself too hard,” she stated.

Psychologist explains the eight relationship signs that someone is going to cheat on you

It could happen at any point

While surprising acts may be a sign of things going well, there could also be various signs that things are going south. And unfortunately, as plenty of us may know, relationships can go wrong at any point.

But wouldn’t it be good to be able to stop that in its tracks? It’d be pretty handy to be able to look into a crystal ball and know if your other half is going to cheat on you.

So, thankfully, consultant psychologist from the Chelsea Psychology Clinic Elena Touroni has shared the eight signs someone is going to cheat on you – if they’re not already, that is.

Being needy could apparently be a sign. (Getty Stock)

When someone is really needy

Writing for The Telegraph, Touroni highlights people that are ‘insecure in themselves’, requiring affirmation from their significant other, though the person may not be able to give them the attention they need.

This can lead to the ‘needier’ individual to seek out external validation from someone else, without the other knowing.

The scary part about this one is that it doesn’t happen early on in a relationship, instead only later if the attention starts to fade.

It’s only when there is a gap in emotional needs, not necessarily material needs, does this happen, causing a person to cheat when meeting someone who makes them feel like they did in the early days of the relationship.

But she explains: “But if people stay connected – and communicate with each other – then it’s unlikely there would be a gap for someone new to move into.”

Being drawn to unavailable partners

Certain men and women are drawn to unavailable partners, usually due to an early childhood experience, maybe an unavailable parent, in the hope that it will be better this time.

The doctor highlights it is mostly women that fall into this trap, as she explains: “Sometimes people make what we call pattern-driven choices – choices based on what has happened to them in their past – in who they choose to be with. These people are more at risk of being cheated on.”

She says a big life event can lead to relationship changes. (Getty Stock)

A big life event

Huge changes in life, or a certain event, can cause an affair, as the expert explains that ‘most people’ will have the opportunity to have an affair, as someone is attracted to them, while they might be too, without acting on it.

However, there needs to be dissatisfaction in the relationship for something to happen, as the psychologist says that children are ‘the number one life change that creates distance’, as the attention goes from the couple to the child.

Intimacy and sexual relationship among the two is usually affected.

Deaths of those in the family or anything traumatic can create ‘some psychological destabilisation’ that can cause someone to cheat.

One partner has cheated before

If there’s a psychological reason behind one of the people in the relationship cheating in the past, there may be a tendency for them to do it again.

Touroni explained: “Most of the time it’s some internal feeling about themselves – such as having a difficulty with being dependent in their relationships.”

A fear of commitment can cause them to feel anxious and act out.

Lack of communication

She revealed she ‘can often tell’ if someone is cheating in a relationship as their stories don’t add up.

If one person in the relationship doesn’t reciprocate the positivity or commitment shown by the other, it is often a sign that something is missing.

“As the relationship therapist, you feel that something isn’t resonating about why these two people are really struggling.

“Usually, you find the answers in the person’s background – you begin to dig into their history and discover clues,” she revealed, again mentioning their upbringing.

One of the people is a narcissist

Narcissism can play a crucial part in spoiling a relationship.

“Generally, these people want to be absolutely loved and worshipped – they feed their sense of self through lots of attention,” Touroni says.

She explained that people either cheat with a lot of different people, or with one sole person in a ‘parallel relationship’.

“Business trip flings are a good example of that – some people tell themselves it’s not really a commitment to another person. Their perception might be ‘I’ve been in this relationship for a long time and the sex isn’t rewarding, but this is keeping me sexually alive’,” she highlighted.

A parallel relationship could be a bigger issue as they’re really not happy and would rather find a new relationship than fix the current one.

Sex life

Touroni highlights that if the sexual relationship is better, then it is more likely that the relationship is in a good place.

If they have done it sporadically, she says: “That is probably a sign for me that their relationship is going in the wrong direction.

“If I am in a session with one half of the couple I will ask how much time they spend together and what it’s like.”

She also says that the relationship history of the partner is crucial too.

It’s not like the plane has an onboard gym

A Mexican actor and fitness influencer kicked off a bit of a discussion after she started doing a workout in the middle of the aisle of her plane.

Last November, soap star Bárbara de Regil posted footage of herself wearing pyjamas and an eye mask exercising on her flight. She told her millions of Instagram followers that she was ‘feeling crazy after nearly 35 hours in the air on planes’ and then performed a ‘body pump’ routine including running on the spot and squat jumps.

Nobody on the plane seemed to take issue with this, but the massed hordes of the internet decided it was worthy of debate as they fell about into arguments on the merits of using the available space on a plane for exercise.

Anyone who’s ever been on a plane will know that space is something of a premium, and legroom is available only to those willing to pay extra or find the special spots where they can sit.

Some people called the woman a ‘ridiculous lady’ for exercising on board the plane, while someone else who did try and get their workout in while hurtling across the skies at great speed said they ‘go to the back of the plain (sic) and stretch’ instead of taking up the aisle.

Another opined that the workout woman ‘must stink’ because there aren’t showers to wash properly on a plane.

On the other hand, some people reckoned that she’d been on flights for so long that a bit of activity was well deserved.

They argued that if someone was ‘flying so often’ then regular movement would be a good thing for them.

de Regil commented on the discussion herself, saying: “Those movements that you see, hahaha, are to avoid thrombosis and, above all, I don’t know about you, but I can’t sit for that long.

They do say you should stretch your legs if you've been on a flight for a long time (barbaraderegil / Instagram)

They do say you should stretch your legs if you’ve been on a flight for a long time (barbaraderegil / Instagram)

“I think more are bothered by the one who snores than the one who moves – besides first of all the space is big.”

Sitting still for ages, as you do if you’re on a long flight or a succession of them, can lead to something called deep vein thrombosis where blood clots form in your legs.

The longer the flight the higher the risk and the best way to counteract this is to stretch your legs and do a bit of exercise.

Meanwhile there’s another reason you might not want to be working out on a plane, as they can be quite yucky places and the many germs which call the aircraft cabin home could decide you make the idea target for illness.

Jamie Samnang is urging others to be more viliglant at the gym

A horrified gym lover was left with a health condition that altered her everyday life after what she thought was a routine visit to the gym.

Jamie Samnang, 41, thought she was bitten by a mosquito when an itchy rash formed on her arm.

Not only did she draw blood after scratching it, but pus-filled bumps formed on her arm, with bug creams doing nothing as the rash spread to her legs and ankles.

She saw a dermatologist, with the health professional diagnosing her with the contagious fungal infection known as ringworm.

They determined that she likely caught it at the gym.

A cosmetologist believes that she caught the ‘severe’ case from the pads on an ab crunch machine at the gym, as she put her bare arms on them.

The American assumed that staff had cleaned the equipment before using it, so did not wipe it down before using it.

She was given antifungal cream as a result of the situation, and told to avoid work and the gym, while also being told she couldn’t sleep in the same bed as her husband until the ring-shaped rash had gone.

This all happened in September, with Jamie now admitting that she cleans machines before and after use, and dons a long-sleeved sweatshirt at the gym.

Now, her aim is to spread the warning message to other gym goers so that they don’t have to go through the same ordeal she did.

“My workout outfit was short sleeved and my arms were exposed,” she recalled.

“I was using the ab crunch machine so you sit and you hold onto handlebars and your elbows are placed flat onto pads.

“Later that night I started to feel a slight tingling, a slight itch – I thought maybe I’d been bitten by a mosquito, but as the days went on it kept getting worse,” Jamie said.

She said the itching was ‘so intense and severe’ despite using creams, and that it spread to her legs as she would touch them after itching her arm.

After finding out from her dermatologist that she had ringworm, she recalled: “They said gyms are one of the number one areas for ringworm because it’s hot, sweaty, and moist – it’s the perfect breeding ground for fungal growth.

“They prescribed me an antifungal steroidal cream and that worked.”

The fitness fanatic had to apply the cream three times a day for three weeks until the infection cleared up completely, even getting in touch with management to complain about her situation to ensure it wouldn’t happen to any other people.

She went on: “I had to wash everything.

“I had to bleach, I had to sterilise, I had to get new bed sheets and I couldn’t sleep near my husband because I was going to get him infected.”

Jamie had to pause her five-times-a-week gym routine until her doctor gave her the green light.

“When I found out it was ringworm, I immediately told them because I believe part of the staff’s job is to help wipe down equipment,” she admitted.

“I wasn’t mad at them, I wasn’t angry, it was just unfortunate that it happened to me,” as Jamie added that the gym staff now take measures to prevent it from happening again.

The rash spread to her legs, and she was unable to sleep in the same bed as her husband (Kennedy News and Media)

After going from sports bras to long sleeved sweatshirts, she has urged everyone to wipe down equipment before and after using them.

She noted that while she would ‘wipe it down after’, her assumption that the equipment was clean beforehand was wide of the mark, claiming that her ‘outlook is completely different now’.

Jamie concluded: “I’d never been in contact with ringworm and I just don’t want that to happen to anybody else because it’s a nightmare.

“For three weeks I was itching so severely that I was bleeding.”

According to the NHS, the main symptom of ringworm is a rash that is ring-shaped. The infection has no connection to actual worms.

The rash may be dry, itchy, scaly or swollen, and can be passed through close contact with infected people or objects and surfaces.

Antifungal medication is the main treatment of the condition.

Don’t try this one at home

There’s been a point in most of our lives where we’ve overindulged and felt like our stomach was about to burst open at the seams.

But have you ever wondered if it’s theoretically possible to chow down on so much food that your stomach could explode?

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering this, don’t worry, you’re not the only one as it turns out others have wondered the same. Most likely at about 5pm on Christmas Day after polishing off a second helping of roast dinner.

So, let’s investigate.

Ever overstretched on a big festive meal and felt like you’re about to burst? (Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

Is it possible for your stomach to burst from overeating?

If you’re currently eating or feeling a little bloated then look away now, as it turns out that it is possible to make your stomach burst from eating too much.

Maximum stomach capacity varies from person to person, with the average being around the 2 to 4 litres mark.

If you somehow pass the threshold and make it to five litres of food, you put yourself at risk of experiencing a stomach rupture, according to reports from Pathologists (via NBC).

YouTuber and popular hypothetical scenario creator Zack D Films even shared a simulation of what could potentially happen if your stomach ruptured in a pretty grim clip.

Watch below if you fancy it:

As the simulation notes, getting a perforation in the lining of your wall of your stomach is no laughing matter. Known medically as gastrointestinal perforation, this can cause the contents of your stomach – such as bacteria, partially digested food and stomach acid – to enter into your abdominal cavity and cause infection.

Which, if left untreated, can lead to serious illness such as peritonitis or even sepsis.

How rare is it for a person’s stomach to burst from overeating?

The good news is that while series, exploding your stomach from eating too much food is extremely rare and very unlikely to happen. No matter how uncomfortably bloated you may feel.

While it is theoretically possible to rupture your stomach wall, it's not likely (Getty Stock Images)

While it is theoretically possible to rupture your stomach wall, it’s not likely (Getty Stock Images)

According to Theresa Strong, director of research programs at the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research, the idea of your stomach comically exploding out our abdomen isn’t accurate either.

“The imagery that comes to mind is quite sensational and not accurate, the stomach wall stretches to the point where there is necrosis and/or rupture,” she explained to Newsweek.

It’s also important to note that the human body has a number of defence mechanisms, which prevent you from eating so much that your stomach explodes, with an article from Business Insider stating that the body’s gag reflex will kick in and prevent you from eating more once your stomach is filled.

Which explains why you may sometimes feel nauseous after eating a particularly big meal.

So yes, rupturing your stomach is theoretically possible — but not likely.

The footage shows the atrocity from ‘a unique perspective’

Warning: Article contains content some readers may find distressing

It’s been over 23 years since the 9/11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center shock the world and yet, footage of the horrifying incident is still a source of morbid curiosity for many.

11 September, 2001 started like any other for busy New Yorkers, with the city waking up and rushing to work as usual. However, the metropolis would come to a standstill at 8:46am, when the first of two planes smashed into the North Tower.

Just under 20 minutes after a second plane would crash into the South Tower, followed by a third flight crashing into the Pentagon (which houses the US Department of Defence). A fourth flight, bound for either the White House or the US Capitol, would smash into a field in Pennsylvania after a passenger revolt.

The attacks took the lives of nearly 3,000 people and injured between 6,000 and 25,000 others. Millions more would die in the following War on Terror, which raged on for decades since.

It’s therefore understandable why the harrowing event still manages to capture our attention, especially with eye-witnesses still coming forward to share their memories and footage.

One of those people is Kei Sugimoto, who uploaded his footage captured from ‘the roof of 64 St Marks Place, in NYC’ to YouTube on 23 July, 2024.

Take a look at the footage captured by Sugimoto below, which has since been viewed over a million times:

Sugimoto has since spoken to LADbible about why he decide to upload the footage from an ‘unseen angle’ as well as what it was like to witness the attack in real time.

“I had just assumed it was an accident and there was a fire,” the now-46-year-old recalled.

However, Sugimoto would add that he realised the scale of the situation after witnessing the second plane hit the South Tower and then decided to grab his camera and document history.

“I did see the second plane impact, and that’s when I thought, okay, for sure, this is not just an accident. This is intentional. It’s a terrorist attack,” he said.

Sugimoto would attempt to had the footage in to his local police department but admitted that his offer wasn’t ‘taken seriously’ by officers on the day, which meant the tapes gathered dust in his closet until recently.

His footage has since gone viral online, which many people appreciating his decision to help ‘preserve history’.

“This footage offers a unique perspective not seen from the south or east,” one said. “You are watching these angles for the first time ever.”

“It’s crazy that we’re almost 23 years out and still getting new footage,” a second added on Reddit, while a third commented: “Makes me wonder how much history is being stored in people’s attics of basements waiting to be unearthed.”

Shaggy admits his fans have misunderstood meaning of hit song ‘It Wasn’t Me’ for decades

Shaggy admits his fans have misunderstood meaning of hit song ‘It Wasn’t Me’ for decades

He wants to set the record straight

It turns out, Shaggy’s most iconic song was actually just one big misunderstanding.

Orville Richard Burrell CD, known professionally as Shaggy, is a Jamaican-American reggae musician who scored big hits with In The Summertime and Boombastic – which if you’re of a certain age surely just makes you think of that one scene from Mr Bean.

Undoubtedly, the 56-year-old’s biggest song is It Wasn’t Me. And if you thought that the song was about encouraging infidelity, then you would be absolutely wrong.

It’s actually the singer refuting claims that he travelled to Spooky Island alongside Scooby Doo and the rest of the mystery gang back in 2002.

Ok it’s not actually that either, given that the song came out before the movie anyway, but the musician’s answer is probably the one you’d least expect.

Considering some of the lyrics include ‘she even caught me on camera’, ‘she saw the marks on my shoulder’, ‘heard the words that I told her’ and ‘heard the screams get louder’, with Shaggy advising his friend to tell her that it simply wasn’t him, you might think that he is encouraging him to keep cheating and lying about it.

However, he seemingly disagrees, going off an interview with people in 2023.

He said: “It was a big misconception with that song because that song is not a cheating song. It’s an anti-cheating song. It’s just that nobody listened to the record to the end.

“There’s a part in the record where it’s a conversation between two people and you have one guy, which is me at that point, giving that bad advice, like, ‘Yo, bro, how could you get caught? Just tell her, ‘It wasn’t me’, and then at the end, the guy says, ‘I’m going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused.

“‘I’ve been listening to your reasoning, it makes no sense at all. Going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused. You might think that you’re a player, but you’re completely lost’.

“Nobody hears that part! That’s what the song says.”

Now I’d say that, given the main crux of the song depends on Shaggy egging his mate by singing it wasn’t me, you can’t really just go off one line near the end about owning up and suggesting that it’s actually not ok (talk about a character glow up). But if Shaggy says the hit song is not about promoting cheating or ‘being a player’ then I guess we will have to bow down to his superior wisdom on this one.

It’s not exactly clear what happened to the man in the creepy video

When you think of a trip to Paris, you’re probably imagining the sparkling Eiffel Tower, those viral hot chocolates, or maybe snacking on a croissant by the Arc de Triomphe.

But just like any other major city, there’s some hidden parts to the French capital that you probably wouldn’t be rushing to visit.

A maze of tunnels sits underneath the Parisian streets and rather eerily, they’re filled with the remains of millions of people.

The Paris catacombs are actually open to visitors though, there’s just a large part of them that are a total no-go.

And let’s be honest, you probably wouldn’t want to go near them anyway, especially with people still calling the terrifying footage of a ‘lost man’ the ‘scariest thing they’ve ever seen’.

There’s plenty of tales of people living down in the catacombs stealing torchers or maps from adventurers as some ‘disappear’.

But most do tend manage to find an exit and eventually return to the surface.

Only one confirmed death has occurred down there, that of hospital worker Philibert Aspairt in 1793.

It’s thought he lost his light source and couldn’t find his way out of the darkness with his body discovered 11 years later, a short distance away from one of the many exits.

After such a long time down there the only way he could be identified was his hospital keyring and his jacket buttons.

Other ‘evidence’ of people in peril in the catacombs has been unearthed over the years.

In the early 1990s, a discarded camcorder was discovered which appeared to show a man exploring the tunnels beneath the French capital.

He starts running at one point, sprinting deeper into the darkness of the catacombs as though being chased by something.

Then he drops the camcorder, which lands on the ground and shows his feet disappearing off down a tunnel.

As you can imagine, the idea of getting lost underground in a maze of tunnels with no idea how to get out had people fairly creeped out.

One person said you could ‘add to my anti-bucket list’ going into the catacombs, while others guessed that the guy ‘panicked because he was lost’ and started running.

But before you go expecting this to be the case of another catacombs victim, there’s not exactly any proof to what happened.

Nobody ever came back to claim the found camcorder as theirs, nothing was ever shown to be chasing him, and there was never a body found.

It’s possible he was a panicked man who got lost under Paris and started running, dropping his camera before eventually finding a way out, or the whole thing is simply just a hoax.
