Missing woman discovered dead on a UK beach after disappearing over 300 miles away

Margaret Barber, 67, went missing from her home in Dublin on 8 August

Warning: This article contains discussion of suicide which some readers may find distressing.

A woman from Ireland who was tragically found dead on a beach in the UK 300 miles from her home died by suicide, an inquest has heard.

Margaret Barber, a 67-year-old community centre manager, went missing from her home in Mount Merrion, Dublin, on the morning of 8 August, 2024.

Her body was discovered by a member of the public in Cumbria on 30 August, with her inquest taking place in Cockermouth, UK earlier this week.

Her husband Donal Kavanagh gave a statement at the inquest and said his wife had been diagnosed with depression in 2011, for which she had been prescribed medication.

However, unbeknown to her GP, she had stopped collecting her anti-depressant venlafaxine prescription between February and July.

Mr Kavanagh revealed that his wife had been in good spirits in the days before her disappearance, and that he reported her missing after she left for what he presumed to be an early morning walk on 8 August and didn’t return by the evening, which prompted a response from local emergency rescue teams.

The Garda Síochána – the national police and security service of Ireland – launched an appeal to try and help find her, but it was taken down in September after her body was located, with dental impressions used to identify her.

A toxicology report was conducted which showed nothing of significance, and it was suspected that she had died from drowning.

And tragically, the coroner at the inquest which took place on Thursday (20 March) concluded that she died by suicide.

Assistant coroner Margaret Taylor said: “We know that Margaret had gone to the beach, she went into water.

“Sadly, it’s not unusual for this to happen. It is either Walney Island or Workington where bodies usually are found if they’ve entered the water in Ireland.

“I have to conclude Margaret’s death was suicide.

“Depression was probably driving her actions, but they do appear to have been purposeful that morning.”

Although Mr Kavanagh suggested that Margaret had been in good spirits in the immediate period before her death, she had also gone through a ‘completely unexpected’ tough period where ‘her mood had dropped and she felt very low.’

The coroner also noted that those who are depressed can often feel ‘very calm’ after making a troubling decision, which might have explained her apparent good mood on the evening before her death.

Five Guys CEO made point to customers as he addressed why restaurant charges so much for burger and chips

Five Guys’ UK CEO John Eckbert explained more about the pricing of the chain’s menu

If you’ve ever been in a Five Guys you might have noticed that its prices are a little on the high side.

Some people reckon it’s quite pricey to buy a burger and fries from there and might just go into another burger joint and get a whole meal for about half the cost.

On the other hand, you are getting some pretty f**king good food for the extra expense so if it’s a case of which burger you’d enjoy more that might justify it for you.

People complaining about the price of Five Guys is nothing new, but the company has explained that it bases its prices on the cost of the ingredients rather than trying to absorb any sudden price rises for some of their stuff.

“We raise our prices to reflect whatever our food costs are,” Five Guys founder Jerry Murrell said.

So, if the mayonnaise guy triples his price, we pay triple for the mayonnaise.

“And then we’ll increase the price of our product.”

On the other hand, sticking a s**t ton of toppings on your burger doesn’t cost you more and Five Guys gives you an extra dollop of fries with your meal too.

Five Guys now boasts nearly 1,700 branches across the world and there’s another 1,500 units in development, showing the success of Murrell’s sales strategy, so it’s clearly working.

As for another reason why Five Guys charges what it does, its UK CEO John Eckbert had an answer.

According to the Standard, Eckbert explained that he saw Five Guys in a particular market that people had already demonstrated they’d pay for.

He said: “Five Guys is an important player in the premium burger space, but now there are lots of players in that market. And some are super fancy, some have a particular take on what makes a burger.”

The UK CEO said the company is ‘really careful about tripping some psychological barrier in pricing’ but reckoned that it hadn’t got to a point where people think they’re paying too much for what they’re getting.

He called Five Guys an ‘affordable luxury’ and reckoned it was a good space to occupy.

Elliott Spencer hit back at comments about the couple’s 30-year age gap

Stephen Fry’s husband Elliott Spencer has previously spoken about the couple’s age gap, and what he thinks about comments from the public.

Fry was made the host of UK’s Jeopardy! upon its return at the start of 2024, and in an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, which will air tonight (22 March), he revealed he was a fan of the game show.

The British TV personality admitted that he avoided ‘Hollywood parties’, preferring to stay home and watch the American version of Jeopardy! with his husband.

In explaining that, Fry revealed why you probably won’t have seen the pair out and about as much, not living the lifestyle of others with his level of fame.

It seems it was meant to be though, with Fry, 67, and Spencer, 37, always being on the same page, as the latter spoke about their relationship back in February 2015, a month after they tied the knot.

Speaking at the BAFTAS that year via The Mirror, Spencer admitted that he was the ‘love of his life’, adding: “Humour is the key to everything. We laugh all the time.”

“I don’t care what people think,” he admitted about criticism of their 30-year age gap from others, saying: “Stephen is the love of my life, the light of my life.”

The writer and photographer revealed that they were introduced to each other by friends at a house party three years prior to their wedding, calling the experience since then ‘incredible’.

Spencer stated: “The rest is history.”

“I’m just really happy and enjoying being married. It’s all been really exciting and new. I’m not really doing anything else,” he added.

Opening up on his career, Spencer revealed: “I’m focusing on photography now rather than comedy, and being creative. I’m hoping to hold an exhibition so Stephen and all our friends can see my work.”

The couple make occasional appearances on the red carpet together, but though they remain fairly private, Fry took to Instagram in January this year to celebrate their anniversary.

“Ten happy years to the day since we were joined in marriage. I’m a lucky man,” he wrote.

For Fry professionally though, his gig as the host of UK’s version of Jeopardy! came after a conversation with his agent, where he admitted he was a fan but that the British version no longer existed.

It took just a couple of weeks for Fry to be offered the role, which he has held over the past year.

Riley Reid reveals the one thing she hates most about the adult industry

Adult star Riley Reid opened up about her love and hate for the industry she has made millions from

World famous adult star Riley Reid has revealed what she hates most about working in her industry of choice.

Now 33 years old, Reid quickly became one of the biggest names in the adult industry after entering it at the age of 19 under the stage name of Paige Riley.

Real name Ashley Matthews, the Miami native has won dozens of awards in her industry and officially put in to the AVN Hall of Fame this year.

Now married to husband Pasha Petkuns, a Lativan free runner and social media star, they couple share one child, Emma, who was born in 2002.

In recent years she has expanded beyond just starring in pornography, creating her own social media management firm called Ash Agency.

Through this, she represents some of the biggest stars in the adult entertainment business including Angela White, Sky Bri, Kazumi, and Violet Myers.

She’s also got her own clothing line called ‘Eighteen Plus’ while still making her own adult content for her own website, away from the likes of Pornhub or OnlyFans.

In a recent interview with Ketone-IQ over on YouTube, Reid took part in a 12 minute interview while running on a treadmill. As you do!

Speaking to host Michael Brandt, CEO of Ketone-IQ, he asked her what she loved and hated most about working in the adult industry.

“Some of my favourite things in the industry is meeting the people and the types of people that I meet because you really get you know people most authentic version of themselves in whatever way that means,” Reid said.

“From like the type of arousal or their high kink fetishes. A regular person that you see, you don’t know their fetishes or what they’re interested in and their desires time.

“So I think that it’s like really nice to be able to get to know people’s most authentic version of theirselves.”

On what she hates most about the industry, it was clear as day for Reid. Stigma.

“It’s not the job itself but it’s society’s stigma towards people with my job title,” she said.

“There’s so many little things. Bank accounts will shut us down, there’s so many random things like that which I think as a society we could treat porn stars a bit differently.”

Reid often sits down for podcasts to open up on her life and experiences, with her recently appearing on the TigerBelly podcast hosted by comedian Bobby Lee.

Sitting down with Lee, she revealed she had been a stripper before entering the porn industry. But for Reid, she made no money in this venture.

“I made like zero money. I lost money because I’m basically super social and friendly and the guys would like hustle me because they’d be like, ‘Oh, she’s just going to talk to me and I don’t have to give her money’,” she said.

“The most I made I think is like $80 one night… and I was like I could make more money at McDonald’s. I did dances but I didn’t know how to sell the dances because I would just hang out at the strip club.”

Now worth a reported $19 million (£15 million), it’s safe to say Reid doesn’t have to worry about money any more for her or her family.

Stephen Fry explains why he hasn't been seen with husband Elliott Spencer in years

Stephen Fry and his husband Elliott Spencer were last seen together in public six years ago

Stephen Fry has given a rare insight into his relationship with husband Elliott Spencer, explaining why they aren’t seen together in public very much.

The UK’s Jeopardy! host is appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show tonight (22 March) and on the programme he spoke about how he got that particular gig.

He explained that when he was over in the US he had dinner with his agent who asked him what he did when he wasn’t in front of the camera or preparing to be so.

Fry gave the explanation, and in doing so gave a reason why you’ve not seen him and Spencer out in public living the sort of raucous, raving lifestyle you’d expect of the former host of QI.

Rather than busting a move in some club, glowsticks clutched in the 67-year-old’s hands, it seems that Fry is much more of an early to bed sort, and if he’s not out partying with his husband then he’s not going to be pictured out partying.

“My husband and I, we don’t go to Hollywood parties much, we have an early supper, watch Jeopardy! go to bed,” Fry said of the response he gave to his agent as to what he did when not on TV.

It was actually this conversation that helped Fry get his latest game show gig as his agent asked him about the UK’s version of Jeopardy!, only to learn there wasn’t one.

A couple of weeks later Fry got the call telling him hosting duties were his.

As for his relationship with Spencer, 37, the pair tied the knot in January 2015 and they don’t tend to make public appearances.

They’ve occasionally stepped onto a red carpet together but it’s been a while since that happened, though Fry did post on Instagram earlier this year to commemorate their anniversary, writing: “Ten happy years to the day since we were joined in marriage. I’m a lucky man.”

Elsewhere in his life, back in January he appeared on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and won £250,000 to be shared between two charities.

To earn his money Fry needed a bit of assistance from host Jeremy Clarkson to answer the £250,000 question, then attempted to double his money but decided against it after his Phone-A-Friend Richard Osman didn’t have enough time to work out a long question.

Sadly, Fry would actually have got it right had he gone with his gut but as he said ‘you don’t want to let the charity down’ once you’re on that sort of money.

He was also asked whether he’d star in the upcoming Harry Potter TV remake, having narrated the audiobooks and professed a trouble with saying the sentence ‘Harry pocketed it’, though JK Rowling disputes his claim that he asked her to stop putting it in the books.

Fry said he’d ‘certainly consider it’, but as far as he knows hasn’t been approached for a role.

The hit Netflix series is littered with subtle details

Anyone who has tuned into Adolescence is well aware that the series shines a damning spotlight on the issues affecting teenagers in the 21st century.

The chilling plot centres on the detriment that dark corners of the internet are having on kids these days, which many parents were previously in the dark about.

The four-part Netflix series, which made it’s debut on 13 March, has plenty of subtle nuances for viewers to pick apart, as well as more obvious messages too.

Now, one viewer has claimed that he has clocked onto something in the second episode of Adolescence that ‘no one noticed’, which exhibits just how different life is for teens these days.

Content creator Dreezy Dem, from Manchester, shared a video to TikTok explaining that he believes one specific prop was used excessively to emphasise this point too.

And according to the YouTuber, it’s evident from the moment that DI Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) and DS Misha Frank (Faye Marsay) step foot on the school playground.

The detectives head to talk to Jamie Miller’s (Owen Cooper) fellow pupils after he is arrested for the murder of schoolgirl Katie, in the hopes of finding some more clues.

But before one of the student’s makes a sharp exit through the classroom window to escape the police, Dreezy says he spotted something else going down in the show.

In the short clip he shared on social media, he said: “No one noticed this in episode two on Adolescence, but I did.”

He told people that while tuning into the second instalment, he spotted that pretty much all of the schoolchildren in the back of the shots were clutching a mobile phone.

Viewers might remember that the teachers are constantly telling the youngsters to ‘put their phones away’ throughout the 50 minute episode.

Although we all know a lot of the plot in Adolescence hinges on the good, the bad and the ugly parts of social media, Dreezy reckons the amount of kids clutching devices has a ‘deeper meaning’.

It seems he thinks this mobile phone detail hammers home just how hooked kids are when it comes to devices, as he counted up to 17 schoolchildren with them in their hands.

“That scene is basically four minutes and 39 seconds of just kids holding their phones in the school,” Dreezy said. “This is a deeper meaning.”

Despite some people saying he was stating the obvious, others praised the TikToker’s hot take.

One said: “Unpopular opinion but phones should be banned from school,” while another wrote: “It was the main point, social media has caused so many issues for young people.”

A third commented: “Mad that this is what the kids do these days, its all about phones, socials, etc. I’m so glad I was brought up in the 80s and 90s, was never like today.”

A fourth added: “This is the point. This whole series is based on what events are like at the moment. Kids are having tablets or phones shoved in their faces literally from birth.”

Even UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been binge-watching Adolescence like the rest of us.

He branded the violence carried out by teens who are influenced by what they see online ‘abhorrent’, while saying the country has ‘to tackle it’.

Jack Thorne, who wrote the series alongside Liverpudlian star Stephen Graham, said he hoped Adolescence ’causes discussion and makes change’.

“I want it to be shown in schools, I want it to be shown in Parliament,” he said. “It’s crucial because this is only going to get worse.”

Flight attendant warns against three 'dangerous' habits influencers do on planes that drivers her 'nuts'

The former cabin crew member spoke about a number of hazardous things that people try to get away with on planes

An ex-flight attendant has spoken out against some of the most annoying influencer trends that she’s spotted on flights online.

The influencer is known on social media as Skye Taylor, and worked for Virgin Atlantic for 16 years in the past.

Taylor, who is now a full-time content creator, complained in a previous TikTok video about some things she has spotted online that she finds ‘crazy’ when it comes to air travel.

And honestly, you can understand why she was so infuriated by the ‘unsafe behaviour’ some people were showing.

Snapping pictures near plane engines

We didn’t think you needed a sign for this, but it might be needed, as Taylor explained this and several other unsafe trends that may happen on planes to the Express.

People do a lot for likes on Instagram, but standing near engines that generate tens of thousands of horse power (an average car has about 180hp), is not the smartest thing to do.

Flight attendants and other trained airline staff might snap a quick pic next to them, but the average passenger should steer clear, for their own safety.

There are markings on the floor that tell you where you should not pass, and they are there for a reason.

Placing their babies on the floor

This sounds unbelievable, but the flight attendant said: “The amount of people that show their babies sleeping on the floor is absolutely crazy.

“It is like, you certainly wouldn’t go and put your child in the footwell of a car.”

She pointed out that the aircraft, in the worst case scenario could drop ‘10,000ft within minutes’, while your child is on the floor under metal.

Taylor suggested that there should be restrictions on sharing content like that as ‘it gives people ideas’, as she added: “It is just about being safety aware which a lot of people aren’t and I totally understand that because they don’t do it everyday.

“But some of it is a little common sense, which seems to be lost sometimes on social media.”

Writing on the bathroom mirror

This may sound harmless, but in the past, Taylor says that it has posed a threat to those in the air – after all, you are crammed into a metal tube in the sky.

“There was one TikTok and there was writing all over the aircraft mirror,” she explained.

“I get that normal people wouldn’t understand that, but there have been quite a lot of occasions in terrorist attacks where writing on a bathroom mirror was quite a horrible thing.”

Other complaints

The former flight attendant still feels a certain way about people complaining online about an unpleasant flight, claiming that the anger aimed at cabin crew was often caused by them adhering to safety restrictions.

She pointed out: “I saw somebody else saying the crew member refused to hold her baby while she went to the bathroom.

“But we are not allowed to hold babies any more, that is a safety thing that was changed. If we do want to hold a baby, we have to find a secure seat, strap ourselves in, and put that baby on our lap,” the Brit revealed.

The flight attendant added that in a post-COVID world, working onboard is so busy that they wouldn’t even get the opportunity to do that.

She highlighted that if they say they can’t do something, they ‘are not being rude’, as there is usually a reason – which a lot of passengers don’t understand.

Taylor further urged passengers not to bring large, unsafe car seats that can partially block the aisle, which can be an issue in an evacuation.

Doctor has an 'ADHD quiz' with 11 questions he asks patients to determine if they have it

Doctor has an ‘ADHD quiz’ with 11 questions he asks patients to determine if they have it

Doctor has an 'ADHD quiz' with 11 questions he asks patients to determine if they have it

He explained that it may be difficult to spot

A doctor came up with a quiz which he thinks could help someone work out whether they’ve got ADHD or not.

Between three and four percent of adults in the UK are thought to have ADHD, and according to the NHS there are a number of signs to look out for.

Cases are most often diagnosed at an early age when someone is under the age of 12, but there are times when an adult is diagnosed with it as well.

Dr Ali Ajaz said that the criteria for diagnosing ADHD was ‘biased against women in general’, and suggested that a woman wondering if she had ADHD should try a quiz he came up with.

Men are more often diagnosed with ADHD, but women experience the same type, number, and severity of symptoms as men.

Experts have suggested that women are more likely to exhibit inattentive symptoms, which can lead to difficulties with concentration, organisation and memory.

Men and boys are more commonly found with hyperactive or impulsive symptoms, which are sometimes easier to spot.

Dr Ajaz compiled a list of 11 questions and asked people to score themselves between one and five points for each, with one being ‘very rarely’ and five being ‘very often’.

If you feel as though you might be displaying symptoms of ADHD, have a browse over Dr Ajaz’s questions:

  1. Are you clueless to how others manage to lead consistent, regular lives?
  2. Do you have trouble controlling what you spend your money on?
  3. Do you find a request for just one more thing at the end of the day emotionally triggering?
  4. Do you feel like you are passing for a normal person, but really feel like an imposter inside?
  5. Do you feel you have better ideas than others, but are just unable to organise them enough to act upon them?
  6. Have you ever been thought of as selfish because you don’t write thank you notes or send birthday cards?
  7. Do you feel like you are always on the go like a tornado or just slobbing around like a couch potato, but never in between?
  8. Do you think twice about having people over to your home because you’re ashamed of the mess?
  9. Do your friends or family call you a slob, or just simply very spacey?
  10. Is all your time taken up just holding your life together with time for fun or relaxation?
  11. Do you often display that you’ll never fulfil your potential or achieve your life goals or ambitions?

As for what this means, the doctor suggested ‘if you score over 35, it’s possible that you might have ADHD’.

He suggested that you speak to a doctor ‘about a specialist referral’, as an adult being diagnosed with it is done by a specialist and under current guidelines cannot be confirmed unless symptoms have been present since childhood as ADHD is not currently considered to develop in adults.

Adult star who earns eye-watering amount of money a month says X-rated career has ‘destroyed’ her dating life

Maddi Miller said that men ‘view her as competition’ because of how much she rakes in

A woman who claims to have achieved millionaire status thanks to her career in the adult industry said her job also ‘destroyed’ her dating life.

Maddi Miller might have the flash cars and a fancy home, but she lost her fella after taking the plunge and signing herself up to an X-rated site.

The Australian, who boasts 25,000 Instagram followers, explained that she first joined the industry when she was aged 18 and in a relationship. She said she got into this line of work to ‘secure her future’, however, Miller says her boyfriend soon became unhappy when she became the breadwinner.

The model explained that her other half was making the most money in the early days of their relationship and he regularly paid for romantic date nights.

But when the roles reversed and Miller started bringing in up to $70,000 (£111,568) a month, she says that her partner began ‘viewing her as competition’.

It wasn’t just this guy, either – as the adult content creator says she has struggled to find a bloke who can deal with her making more money than him.

She told news.com.au last year: “I feel like it hurts their egos. They still have this expectation that, as the man, they should hold the financial power in a relationship.

“I obviously threaten their sense of masculinity in that way.”

The fact that she lives in a small town in Western Australia with a limited dating pool doesn’t help matters, either.

“It’s always been ironic to me that I’ve never had more men frothing over me on the internet than I do now and yet in real life, I have less going on than ever before,” Miller said.

At the time, she explained she had been single for about a year.

“But I’d rather be celibate than with a man that doesn’t support my career,” Miller added.

She said she has got her sights set on meeting a guy who is ‘also successful in his career and someone who I can build an empire with’.

Miller continued: “People tend to look at me, my style, my tattoos and what I do for work and make assumptions about my values. They’re almost never right, I’m a total romantic.”

The adult star explained she has been motivated to make money since the age of 14, which is when she got her first job.

Saying she has ‘worked hard from the moment she could’, Miller told how she was employed in various roles over the years, such as a tattooist and an administrator at a golf club.

Speaking of her venture into the adult industry, she said: “This career gave me the chance to take my finances to another level and secure my future as well.”

What happened as Garron Noone deletes TikTok and Instagram after Conor McGregor immigration video

Known for his food reviews and comedic takes, while also saying his ‘I’m Delicious’ catchline, Noone has deleted his social media

Irish creator Garron Noone, known for his viral ‘I’m Delicious’ catchphrase, has deleted his social media accounts on TikTok and Instagram following a video about immigration.

It comes after his fellow countryman Conor McGregor made demands to the Irish government on ‘White House paper’ regarding the political future of Ireland, including people coming in to the country.

McGregor said, without evidence, that Irish politicians have ‘abandoned the voices of the people’, adding that there was ‘zero action with zero accountability’.

He went as far as saying there is an ‘illegal immigration racket running ravage’. Again, without providing evidence of this.

Noone, who had more than one million people following him across his accounts, became popular during the coronavirus lockdowns for his food reviews and satirical takes on current affairs and news.

But in a new video on the serious matter of immigration, Noone said countless people had messaged him for his take on McGregor’s visit to The White House and to see President Donald Trump as a way for the USA to mark St Patrick’s Day.

“Now, my opinion on Conor McGregor is irrelevant. But I don’t think he’s a good person,” Noone said. “I don’t think it’s particularly hard to find evidence of that.

“But it doesn’t surprise me in the least to see a lot of people agreeing with what he was saying.

“There absolutely is a immigration issue in Ireland.”

Noone, who is a professional musician, added that this ‘doesn’t mean that people feel we shouldn’t take the refugees that we’re able to take’ or that ‘people shouldn’t be able to come here for better opportunities’.

On the wider issue of politics in Ireland, he added: “The systems that we have in place are being taken advantage of, and that is plain to see.

“And the government continually does not allow people to express their concerns about that.
