Tips for Cleaning Your Ears Safely

You can clean your ears at home with a damp washcloth or over-the-counter drops. If your ears are impacted, a doctor can remove wax buildup.

Do your ears feel blocked up? Excess wax can accumulate sometimes and make hearing difficult.

At the same time, you’ve probably read that using cotton swabs isn’t a safe way to remove the wax. Here are some tips on how to safely clean your ears, what not to do, and when you should contact a doctor.

Symptoms of impaction

Earwax, or cerumen, is a self-cleaning agent your body produces. It collects dirt, bacteria, and other debris. Usually, the wax works its way out of the ears naturally through chewing and other jaw motions.

Many people never need to clean their ears. Sometimes, though, wax can build up and affect your hearing. When earwax reaches this level, it’s called impaction.

If you have impaction, you may experience symptoms like:

  • aching in the affected ear
  • fullness or ringing in the ear
  • impaired hearing in the affected ear
  • an odor coming from the affected ear
  • dizziness
  • a cough

You may be more likely to develop excess wax if you use hearing aids or earplugs. Older adults and people with developmental disabilities are also at higher risk. Your ear canal’s shape may make the natural removal of wax difficult.

Best ways to clean your ears

The safest way to remove wax buildup from your ears is to visit a doctor. At your appointment, your doctor can use special instruments, like a cerumen spoon, forceps, or suction device, to clear the blockage. Many offices also offer professional irrigation.

If you choose to try to remove wax at home, the following are the safest methods to try on your own:

Damp cloth

Cotton swabs may push wax deeper into the ear canal. Use cotton swabs only on the outside of your ear or, better yet, try wiping the area with a warm, damp washcloth.

Over-the-counter ear cleaning drops

Many pharmacies sell over-the-counter (OTC) eardrops that soften wax. These drops are typically a solution. They may contain:

  • mineral oil
  • baby oil
  • glycerin
  • peroxide
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • saline

Place the specified number of drops into your ear, wait a certain amount of time, and then drain or rinse out your ear. Always follow the instructions on the package. Contact a doctor if your symptoms continue after treatment.

Bulb syringe

You may also choose to irrigate your ears using a syringe. In this process, you’ll gently rinse out the ear canal using water or a saline solution. This method is often more effective if you first use some type of wax softener 15 to 30 minutes before irrigating.

It’s best to warm the solution to your body temperature to avoid dizziness.

Safe ways to remove earwax

  1. Ask your doctor to remove the wax in their office.
  2. Clean the outside of your ear with a damp cloth.
  3. If you choose to use cotton swabs, don’t insert them into the ear canal.
  4. You can use earwax softener to soften earwax for easier removal.
  5. You can use a syringe to irrigate your ears.
Why cleaning your ears is important

Some earwax is completely normal and good to have in your ear canals. That said, if it builds up and starts causing symptoms, like muffled hearing or dizziness, it’s important you clean it out.

When earwax builds and gets impacted, you may develop ear infection. Additionally, if you’re experiencing symptoms of impaction, you want to be sure it’s just wax and not something (like fluid or hearing loss) that requires more medical attention.

How often should I clean my ears?

You don’t want to clean your ears too often. Doing so may irritate your ear canal or even lead to more impaction if done incorrectly.

Experts share that people may not need to clean their ears unless they develop issues like blockages regularly. Instead, your ears clean themselves on their own.

If you don’t deal with buildup, wash only the outer part of your ears by wiping them with a wet washcloth. Washing the outer ear should clean away any wax that has moved out of the ear canal on its own.

If you experience symptoms of wax buildup, you might consider using an OTC kit to clean wax from your ears. Follow the package directions and be sure to contact a doctor for further guidance.

A doctor can also tell you whether you should have your ears cleaned professionally or do it on your own. Some people, like those with holes in their eardrums or tubes, should not clean their ears at home using OTC kits or other home methods.

Things to avoid

Many people don’t need to clean their ears routinely. The wax should take care of itself. If you’re using small items, like bobby pins, cotton swabs, or napkin corners, you may push the wax deep into the ear canal. Once wax builds up, it can become impacted.

The rule you’ll hear from most doctors is to not put anything smaller than your elbow inside of your ear. In other words, don’t use sharp objects, cotton swabs, or anything else that could potentially injure your eardrum and permanently damage your hearing.

You shouldn’t attempt to irrigate your ears if:

  • you have diabetes
  • you have a compromised immune system
  • you may have a hole in your eardrum
  • you have tubes in the affected ear

Ear candles are another option you should avoid. The long, cone-shaped candles are inserted into the ear canal and then lit on fire to draw wax upward with suction. The fire can injure you, or you can accidentally get wax from the candle inside of your ear.

Complications

If you develop a blockage and don’t treat it, your symptoms can get worse. You may develop further ear irritation and even hearing loss. The wax may also accumulate to such a level that it may become difficult for your doctor to see inside of your ear and diagnose other issues.

When to contact a doctor

The symptoms of earwax blockage include:

  • feelings of fullness in the ear
  • reduced or muffled hearing
  • an earache

They may also signal another medical problem, like an infection. A doctor can look inside of your ears to determine whether your symptoms stem from wax buildup or something else.

The signs of ear infection in adults include:

  • pain in the middle ear
  • fluid drainage
  • impaired hearing

Ear infection symptoms typically develop rapidly. If you notice pain and drainage from your ears, don’t try to treat it on your own. Make an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible to get a proper diagnosis and, if necessary, medication.

If you experience earwax impaction more than once per year or have certain risk factors, tell the doctor. You may want to schedule routine professional cleanings every 6 to 12 months.

Why your ears make wax

Earwax may seem dirty to you, but it’s actually a natural cleanser for your ears. Wax generally moves from the inside of your ear canal to the outer part of your ear. Along its journey, it picks up dead skin cells, dirt, and even hair.

Tests show that wax may boast antibacterial and antifungal qualities that aid even more with this cleanup act.

How to protect your ears

Beyond keeping your ears clean, follow these tips to protect them and ensure good hearing for years to come:

  • Don’t insert small objects into your ears. You shouldn’t put anything smaller than your elbow inside of your ear canal because it can cause injury to your eardrum or wax impaction.
  • Limit your exposure to loud noises. Wear protective headgear or earplugs when the noise gets too loud.
  • Take periodic breaks from using your headphones, and keep the volume low enough that no one else can hear your music. Don’t raise the volume in your car’s sound system up too high.
  • Dry out your ears after swimming to prevent swimmer’s ear. Use a cloth to wipe the outside of the ear, and tilt your head to help remove any additional water.
  • Pay attention to any hearing changes that occur with the use of certain medications. If you notice changes, balance issues, or ringing in your ears, contact a doctor.
  • See a doctor as soon as possible if you notice sudden pain, a loss of hearing, or if you have an ear injury.
  • Home Remedies: Effective earwax removal

a closeup of a young girl's ear

Earwax is a helpful and natural part of your body’s defenses. It cleans, lubricates and protects your ear canal by trapping dirt and slowing the growth of bacteria.

Earwax blockages commonly occur when people try to clean their ears on their own by placing cotton swabs or other items in their ears. This often just pushes wax deeper into the ear, which can damage the lining of your ear canal or eardrum.

Never attempt to dig out excessive or hardened earwax with available items, such as a paper clip, a cotton swab or a hairpin.

If your eardrum doesn’t contain a tube or have a hole in it, these self-care measures may help you remove excess earwax that’s blocking your ear canal:

  • Soften the wax.
Use an eyedropper to apply a few drops of baby oil, mineral oil, glycerin or hydrogen peroxide in your ear canal.
  • Use warm water.
After a day or two, when the wax is softened, use a rubber-bulb syringe to gently squirt warm water into your ear canal. Tilt your head and pull your outer ear up and back to straighten your ear canal. When finished irrigating, tip your head to the side to let the water drain out.
  • Dry your ear canal.
When finished, gently dry your outer ear with a towel or hand-held dryer.
You may need to repeat this wax-softening and irrigation procedure a few times before the excess earwax falls out. However, the softening agents may only loosen the outer layer of the wax and cause it to lodge deeper in the ear canal or against the eardrum.

Signs and symptoms of earwax blockage may include:

  • An earache
  • Feeling of fullness in the affected ear
  • Ringing or noises in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Decreased hearing in the affected ear
  • Dizziness
  • Coughing
If your symptoms don’t improve after a few treatments, see your health care provider. Having an earache or decreased hearing, doesn’t necessarily mean you have wax buildup. It’s possible you have another medical condition involving your ears that may need attention.

Doctors issue warning for 'winter penis' and reveal who may be most at risk

‘Winter penis’ is back — and it’s exactly what it says on the tin

‘Winter penis’ is back with a vengeance, and some men may be more likely to experience the unwanted physiological change.

As per the name, ‘winter penis’ is what happens to your manhood in the colder months — December through to February, to be precise.

Depending on the temperature, some men might see shrinkage of up to 50 percent in length if exposed to any air temperature below 60°F, Dr Darius Parduch, a sexual health specialist, previously told Men’s Health.

You may also experience 20 to 30 percent shrinkage girth wise, as well as your testicles getting smaller – and the reason they do this to retain heat.

Parduch further explained: “When you’re cold, your blood vessels constrict, which limits blood flow to your penis.”

He also warned it could cause some pain and discomfort if you get ‘winter penis’ (also known as vasoconstriction).

A way to prevent this from happening is by wearing sport boxer briefs to prevent your appendage moving around and causing unwanted friction.

A doctor may also prescribe you erectile dysfunction tablets to encourage blood flow to your penis (not so you’ll get a hard-on).

And speaking of not getting boners, if you struggle erectile dysfunction you might be more susceptible to getting ‘winter penis’.

Asda Online Doctor, Dr. Crystal Wyllie, told The Sun: “Those with erectile dysfunction (ED) are most at risk as they could find their symptoms more difficult to manage.”

As well as having ED making someone more likely to suffer with ‘winter penis’, ED can also be more common in the colder months — and you can thank you cold weather and lack of sunshine for that.

“While [erectile dysfunction] can occur at any time of the year, it’s more common in winter as lower levels of sunlight affect the brain and increase amounts of melatonin, a hormone that makes you feel sleepy,” Pilot explained.

“With this lower sunlight, you’ll also experience a reduction in how much serotonin your body produces which is linked to depressive symptoms.”

An estimated 30 million men in the United States suffer from erectile dysfunction, says the National Institutes of Health.

But it’s not just the lack of sunlight in the winter months you have to worry about as dehydration can also make ‘winter penis’ worse.

Dr Saransh Jain, a world-renowned sexologist, told GB News that men should focus on staying hydrated during the winter months as ‘dehydration exacerbates the effects of vasoconstriction’.

There are a number of reasons why fresh water is preferable to salt water

As multiple fires continue to burn through Los Angeles, there’s a good reason why firefighters aren’t using the nearby ocean water to help tame the blaze.

The Palisades Fire, which is devastating the area between Malibu and Santa Monica, has been reported as the most destructive wildfire ever to hit Los Angeles County.

The fire has covered more than 17,000 acres and stands at zero percent containment at the time of writing (January 9).

With three other fires – the Hurst Fire, Eaton Fire, Sunset Fire – still burning, some people have been left wondering why firefighters can’t use water from the Pacific Ocean to try and extinguish the flames.

“Is there any particular reason why we can’t use ocean water to help put out the fires?,” one person asked on Twitter, as another claimed they had found a ‘solution’ to the wildfires, with a map pointing to the ocean.

A number of people have suggested using salt water to tackle the fires (X)

A number of people have suggested using salt water to tackle the fires (X)

Water is the natural enemy of fire, but there are some differences between freshwater and saltwater that make freshwater the preferred choice.

One of those differences, Technology.org points out, is that salt can cause corrosion. While ocean water may work to tackle the fire, storing it in water tanks and putting it in contact with other equipment used in firefighting can cause damage, potentially hindering the use of the equipment in the future.

Another reason to avoid using saltwater in fires is the impact it can have on the ecosystem in the future. Salt makes it harder for plants to get water, meaning its use can result in landscapes left barren for years.

Even in areas where there is less vegetation, most existing firefighting systems rely on fire hydrants and fire engine tanks which have been adapted to use fresh water, making salt water impractical.

Salt can also reduce the cooling effect of water, which in turn makes it less efficient at lowering the temperature of a fire.

All of this is not to say salt water absolutely couldn’t be used to fight the Los Angeles fires, but it’s not the ideal solution.

Questions about using salt water to fight fires rose after some Los Angeles County fire hydrants began to run dry as firefighters tackled the blazes, despite the water storage tanks that service the hydrants being filled before the fires broke out.

Jim Hudson, of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, told CNN that the issue was a ‘challenge’ early on, but assured the water system has since started to ‘stabilize’.

Brooke Shields was enraged when her surgeon revealed what he had done

Warning: This article contains discussion of rape which some readers may find distressing.

Brooke Shields has spoken out about the horrific moment she was informed by her surgeon that he had performed additional surgery on her genitalia without her consent.

The Hollywood star has lived in the public eye before she could talk.

Shields, born in New York, became a child model at the age of 11 months before shooting to superstardom at age 12 for her role as a young prostitute in Louis Malle’s 1978 film, Pretty Baby, which included nude scenes of her.

The now 59-year-old hasn’t shied away from discussing the trauma she endured as a rising star while under the brutal scrutiny of the press in an overtly exploitative and sexualised industry when she was just a child.

Shields opened up about her objectification in the 2023 Hulu documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, and touched upon another major traumatic event when she said she was raped by an important casting figure, who she has not identified, in her 20s.

Yet the star’s personal boundaries continued to be invaded into adulthood, she has revealed in her new memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.

In her book and to Us Weekly, Shields said she endured an unwanted and unnecessary procedure while in her 40s as a surgeon ‘tightened’ her vagina without her consent while performing another surgery.

She said it started when her gynecologist had asked her whether her labia had caused her discomfort, which she said it had along with bleeding and chafing since she was a high school student.

The doctor advised her to book a surgical reduction, which she did with a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon.

Shield explained: “Of course, it’s not covered by insurance because it’s considered cosmetic, which is very interesting. The last time I did check, I did not want to be a porn star.”

In her book, she wrote a caveat that it might be ‘too graphic or simply TMI’ but stressed her need to share it.

“I’d be lying if I said I’m not embarrassed to share this very intimate information.

“But, if we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues. Shame is no longer an option.”

It was during her post-op consultation that her surgeon ‘proudly’ announced he had thrown in ‘a little bonus’ – a vaginal rejuvenation which involves either tightening or reshaping of female genital tissues.

The actress told the magazine: “It felt like such an invasion — such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind” and that she was ‘dumbfounded’ by the surgeon’s admission.

She continued: “Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there.

Both Shields and her gynecologist were angry about the irreversible procedure being carried out without her permission but said she didn’t want to talk about it, feeling ‘shame’ and ‘anger’.

She didn’t even tell her husband, Chris Henchy, for ‘the longest time’ but decided against taking any further action.

Shields’ memoir hits shelves next Tuesday (January 14).

Many rushed to defend ABC reporter David Muir after he was slammed for what he wore while reporting on the LA wildfires

A prominent news anchor has been on the receiving end of some tough criticism while reporting from the scene of LA wildfires.

ABC News anchor David Muir is being slammed on Twitter as users call him a ‘loser’ and a ‘narcissist’ for his apparent choice of clothing while reporting on the ongoing wildfire situation in Los Angeles.

LA declared a state of emergency this week as the fires rampaged through acres of land in a matter of hours on Tuesday, prompting a mass evacuation order of more than 130,000 residents.

As dry conditions and high winds have only fanned the ferocious flames, footage on social media show homes and businesses continue to burn in scenes that look something straight out of an apocalyptic movie.

While LAFD continue to battle the deadly blaze, reporters from across the world have been deployed to the area to report on the devastation, albeit from much safer distances.

Yet Muir’s clip, set to the backdrop of a fire-ravaged Palisades, has seemingly gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

While wearing a yellow flame-retardant jacket in his broadcast, eagle-eyed viewers spotted he was using clamps to cinch his jacket in at the back.

The host of World News Tonight with David Muir started his segment on the tragedy saying: “As you can see here behind me,” and as he does so, turns to point to the rubble – which exposes his alleged fashion faux pas and unusual accessory.

As he points to the scene, a wooden peg can be seen on the back of his jacket, apparently tightening the jacket in at his waist.

Jack Osbourne slammed the anchor’s look, writing on social media: “Nice Jacket Bro. Glad you look nice and svelte with those clothes line pegs, while our city burns to the ground.”

Osbourne even tagged Elon Musk in his scathing comment.

And Osbourne wasn’t the only one to have thrown in their two cents on the ‘look’.

One Twitter user described the anchor as ‘an absolute tool’ while others weighed in the ’embarrassing’ outfit made him look like a ‘loser’ and a ‘narcissist’.

Amongst the hurl of insults, a woman commented: “It actually looks ridiculous cinched that tightly.”

Another wrote: “Sorry, not being nice here. He thinks he looks good. The fact that he cares how he looks at a time like this is really something.”

“Lol, the vanity in LA never takes a pause,” a third enraged viewer added.

“Wow! He’s like, ‘does this jacket make me look fat? Get me some clothes line pegs, stat!'” penned another.

However, dozens of others have jumped to Muir’s defence, pointing out the wind would have made his jacket flap and ‘given his sound tech an aneurysm’ while broadcasting, referring to the sound interference with his microphone.

Media personality Brenna Morello simply said: “We all do this in TV. Nothing new.”

The latest criticism comes as Muir was slammed by Conservatives when he moderated a debate last summer, during which critics noted he interrupted Donald Trump five times while leaving Democratic nominee Kamala Harris alone.

Meanwhile in LA, NBC News reports at least five people in one of the most serious wildfires LA has ever experienced.

This is one to add to your grocery list

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but it may be something else you need introduce to your diet to stay healthy.

There are many things people will be aware of that can increase your risk of developing cancer.

From sun beds and skin cancer, to smoking and lung cancer; many common cancers are associated with people’s lifestyle choices.

With this in mind, a 2019 study revealed that 50 percent of all cancer deaths could be prevented by people making lifestyle changes.

And one lifestyle change you could make to reduce the risk of you developing bowel in particular is by simply drinking a certain beverage on a daily basis — milk.

Now, milk has long been associated with the positive benefits it can have on our teeth and bones, but new research by Cancer Research UK has found consuming an additional 300mg of calcium (about the amount in a large glass of milk) a day could be linked to decreasing the risk of bowel cancer by 17 percent.

The study marks the largest single study of diet and bowel cancer to date in Nature Communications, and used data from more than 500,000 women.

The data was analyzed by researchers from the University of Oxford to see if there were any links between 97 dietary products and nutrients and bowel cancer risk over an average time of 16 years.

Dr Keren Papier, lead researcher of the study, said of the findings: “This is the most comprehensive single study ever conducted into the relationship between diet and bowel cancer, and it highlights the potential protective role of calcium in the development of this disease.”

Dairy foods rich in calcium — such as yoghurt and milk – were linked to lower risk of developing cancer.

Non-dairy foods that are rich in calcium, like green leafy vegetables, were also found to be beneficial in reducing people’s risk of developing the common cancer.

Papier further added: “We have some idea on why calcium has this effect.

“It’s suggested that calcium might protect against bowel cancer by binding to bile acids and free fatty acids to form a type of a harmless ‘soap’, which stops them from damaging the lining of our gut.”

The so-called ‘soap’ aids bile and fatty acids to be swept out of the gut like a ‘spring clean’, Cancer Research UK explained. This way they’re less likely to build up and cause and damage that might lead to cancer.

Before you get too excited, however, other studies have linked high dairy consumption to breast and prostate cancer, and an increased risk of heart disease.

Having eyes that can spot the danger immediately is quite the good brag

Admittedly spotting the great white shark in this photo is difficult, even when you are giving a hint about where it is.

Having great eyes is certainly something worth bragging about, but if you are quickly able to spot the danger in this one photo you might need to change professions because, damn.

A bird’s eye photo of a boat, some surfers and a great white shark has recently been posted on Reddit and has had users patting themselves on the back for spotting where the shark is.

This is a game that has long been played on social media and is so popular on Reddit there is a whole subreddit dedicated to it called ‘find the sniper.’

So, as you can guess, if you can spot it easily and quickly you just might have ‘sniper vision’ and your country might just need your brilliant eyes.

The post challenged users to find the great white shark and captioned the image: “Shark attacks are rising in Australia. Technology is helping stop them.’

The whereabouts of the shark aren’t exactly obvious, hence the challenge, and on top of that, the sea waves make it tricky for even those with the sharpest eyes to spot the shark.

Can you see it?

Some remarked that it wasn’t particularly difficult, sooo if you were struggling, (like I was) we can just assume they were lying about it being easy. Yup. Sounds good to me.

One Reddit user commented: “Found the Great White, took me a few seconds, had to look at the same spot a couple of times, just to make sure that’s what I was seeing, it was. This one was fun

Another said: “This was unnerving, the ocean is so beautifully frightening.

With a third saying: “Growing up in Florida and flying over ponce inlet regularly. I was able to spot this almost immediately.”

While a another person highlighted their own experiences dealing with sharks getting closer to surfers.

They said: “We have juveniles that cruise our coast. Bites are sporadic and usually during elephant seal pup season when the locals are mistaken because of the surfboard. aren’t fat enough to bother with.

“Gotta love the oceans apex predators. The other off our local shores are Biggs Orca, who are smart enough GG to know better.”

Personally, I don’t see the harm in struggling to find the shark, I’ll just stay out of the ocean. But if you do feel like braving the seas, the shark is at the very top of the image, above the boat and slightly to the left.

Ariana Grande’s relationship with her “Wicked” co-star continues to capture public attention nearly two years after it began. Recently, they attended an event, posing for photos and publicly embracing. While some fans admire their connection, others criticize the circumstances of its beginnings, leaving public opinion divided.

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater first crossed paths on the set of “Wicked,” the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. The two were cast as Glinda and Boq, and filming began in late 2022.

While the details of their relationship unfolded gradually, the buzz around their connection quickly outpaced the promotion of the movie. The events that followed—and the reactions from fans and critics—have made their relationship one of the most talked-about topics in recent years.

From Co-Stars to a Couple: How They Met

Grande and Slater met while filming the movie adaptation of “Wicked,” which began production in December 2022. Grande was cast as Glinda, the Good Witch, while Slater portrayed Boq, a lovestruck munchkin with a pivotal role in the storyline.

Their collaboration on set reportedly extended beyond rehearsals, with insiders claiming the pair’s connection grew over time. By mid-2023, the pair’s relationship had turned romantic, coinciding with personal changes in their lives.

Both were reportedly separated from their spouses when their connection deepened, although the timing raised questions from fans and media alike. On set, their growing bond was glaringly obvious, with reports suggesting that their interactions occasionally blurred the lines between professional and personal.

One insider noted that “Ariana and Ethan weren’t careful,” as the co-stars would occasionally hold hands or interact warmly between takes. As details of their relationship surfaced, the backlash was swift, with many focusing on the circumstances surrounding Slater’s divorce and Grande’s involvement.

The Controversy: Timing and Backlash

The timeline of Grande and Slater’s relationship has drawn sharp criticism due to its overlap with their respective divorces. Grande filed for divorce from Dalton Gomez in September 2023, citing irreconcilable differences.

Legal documents revealed their separation date as February of the same year, suggesting a months-long effort to settle amicably. Around the same time, Slater filed for divorce from Lilly Jay, his wife of five years, in July 2023.

This came just months after publicly celebrating his wife’s first Mother’s Day in May, calling her “the most loving, caring, and wonderful mom/person in the world.” The couple had been high school sweethearts and shared a child born in 2022.

Reports of Slater’s relationship with Grande emerged just days before his filing, fueling speculation and criticism. When news of Grande and Slater’s relationship broke, the backlash was immediate and intense.

In November 2024, a video of Slater interacting with fans went viral on X, reigniting public debates about his relationship with Grande. In the clip, Slater is seen mingling with fans and even taking selfies, which many viewers described as a sweet and approachable moment.

However, the responses to the video highlighted the stark divide in public opinion regarding the couple. Supporters praised Slater’s demeanor and expressed admiration for his relationship with Grande.

“He’s so nice, and every little interview I see makes me [notice] how perfect he is for Ariana,” one fan posted, while another wrote, “OMG!!! They’re perfect for each other; also, he’s ADORABLE!” Some fans even likened him to Grande, with one comment noting, “He is kinda like Ariana’s male version.”

“Why does he have a similar mannerism to Ari?” one fan asked. Another commented“He’s literally Ariana in male version,” while others noted their similar energy and shared quirks, which seemed to validate their connection in the eyes of some.

Some fans even highlighted Grande’s potential motivations, with one writing, “I think everyone needs to realize Ariana probably goes for a sweet and funny type instead of the looks.”

Others noted his gentle nature with one saying, “He was gonna pull his phone for the selfie😭😭 omg he’s so sweet I’m crying 😭😭😭” while another one added, “I love how everyone finally [finds] out that Ethan is actually the nicest person ever while I knew it since he was Spongebob.”

On the other hand, detractors were quick to criticize, with many referencing his past. “He left his wife and newborn baby[—]is that sweet?” one user asked, echoing statements such as, “Cute and sweet? Didn’t he cheat and abandon his pregnant wife for Arianna Grande?”

“[You] guys do not get to switch up now[—]he LEFT HIS WIFE AND BABY,” another comment read. Another X user said, “[I don’t care] that he seems sweet; this man cheated on his wife who just had a baby. As much as [sic] love Ari, a big NO.”

The clip amplified existing tensions between fans and critics, showcasing how deeply polarizing the couple remains. Despite the lighthearted nature of the video, the comments reflected a lingering unease about the circumstances of Slater’s divorce and the public perception of his romance with Grande.
Public Appearances: Love in the Spotlight

Grande and Slater’s relationship has steadily moved from behind-the-scenes whispers to public outings, further fueling interest and controversy. Their first major appearance as a couple was in October 2023, shortly after Grande finalized her divorce.

The pair were spotted enjoying a casual dinner date in New York City. In December 2023, the couple dined with Grande’s father, Ed Butera, at her family’s favorite Italian restaurant before attending a performance of Slater’s musical, “Spamalot.”

A source close to Grande noted, “They love to support each other in their work.” In June 2024, the couple attended Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals in Florida. This outing came just days after Grande released the music video for her single “The Boy Is Mine,” which fans speculated was inspired by her romance with Slater.

Most recently, in January 2025, the couple made waves at the National Board of Review Awards Gala in New York City. Photographers captured an intimate moment as the two posed together, with Grande resting her eyes as Slater smiled warmly for the camera.

These appearances have placed Slater under increased scrutiny, shifting focus from their relationship to his career and personal life. This attention has raised questions about who Slater is beyond the headlines.

Ethan Slater: A Closer Look

Slater’s career extends beyond his recent public notoriety as Ariana Grande’s boyfriend. A Broadway talent, Slater is best known for his Tony-nominated performance as the titular character in “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.”

His comedic timing and vocal range earned him widespread acclaim, solidifying his reputation as a skilled performer. In addition to his theater work, Slater has appeared in projects like “Fosse/Verdon” and the live stage recording of “The SpongeBob Musical.”

Slater’s admiration for Grande extends beyond their personal relationship. In an interview with GQ, he expressed respect for her talent and work ethic, calling her “a genius.”

Reflecting on their collaboration in “Wicked,” Slater praised Grande’s dedication and the transformative work she poured into the role of Glinda. “I’m really, really proud of Ari and the work she’s done on this,” he shared.

Despite Slater’s professional achievements, public attention has largely focused on his personal life. His ex-wife, Jay, is a clinical psychologist specializing in women’s mental health.

Although their split coincided with the start of his romance with Grande, sources close to the couple have consistently maintained that Slater and Jay were separated before his relationship with Grande began.

Jay, however, has indirectly addressed the situation through an essay published more than a year after their divorce became public. Without naming Slater, she reflected on the challenges of navigating postpartum life alongside a marriage that ended unexpectedly.

She wrote, “No one gets married thinking they’ll get divorced, especially not just after giving birth.” Despite the pain of their separation, she emphasized their shared commitment to co-parenting their son.

“Both of us fiercely love our son 100 percent of the time,” she wrote, adding that she continues to find joy in her role as a mother despite the life changes. Slater has largely avoided commenting publicly on the controversies surrounding his personal life. However, colleagues have spoken positively about his character.

Lilli Cooper, who worked alongside him in “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical,” expressed surprise at his new relationship but noted that he has always been a kind and professional coworker.

Grande’s Defense and Public Statements

In response to the intense media scrutiny surrounding their relationship, Grande has taken a firm stance, addressing the controversies head-on. During a September 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, she rejected tabloid claims that Slater abandoned his family to be with her.

“The most disappointing part was to see so many people believe the worst version of it,” she said. Grande avoided discussing specific allegations but strongly defended Slater’s character. She described him as “someone with the best heart” and praised his dedication to the people he loves.

“There couldn’t be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him,” she added. She also reflected on the challenges of living under constant public scrutiny. Grande explained how years of tabloid culture had shaped her experience with fame, starting when she was a teenager.

Grande made it clear that she refuses to let media narratives define her life. “I will never let disreputable evil tabloids ruin my life or my perception of what is real and good,” she said.

Her statements have done little to quell public debates, but they offer a glimpse into her perspective on the controversy. Grande seems determined to focus on her happiness and the support she and Slater provide each other, despite the swirling criticism.

A viral video appears to depict a group of people standing around a fire that has been set just two miles from the wildfires ravaging LA

As Los Angeles continues to battle the devastating wildfires, a video has gone viral online showing a group of people standing by in awe of what appears to be a man-made bonfire.

Firefighters in the area are tackling what is reported to be the most destructive wildfire to ever hit Los Angeles County in the Palisades Fire – displacing thousands of residents in the area between Malibu and Santa Monica.

So far, the wildfire has covered more than 17,000 acres and stands at zero percent containment at the time of writing (January 9), while three other fires – the Hurst Fire, Eaton Fire, Sunset Fire – are still burning.

Paris Hilton has seen her home in Malibu ‘burn to the ground’, while actor John Goodman has seen his residence suffer the same fate – but they are just two of a long list of celebrities who are suffering at the hands of the most ferocious fire LA has seen.

So, when people hear that residents are intentionally setting fires just a couple miles down the road, it has infuriated the public. Take a look below:

“People are lighting fires in otherwise non-burning urban areas of LA. Saw this happen first hand at 302 Pico in Santa Monica,” podcaster Andrew Huberman shared on Twitter.

“Called it in & fire dept & police responded. Stay safe and call in any activity ASAP. We don’t need more flames out here.”

The alleged idiocy even garnered a response from Elon Musk, who simply wrote: “Wow.”

While another added: “What is wrong with this World?! Praying for ALL of us!”

It comes as people have called for the state to use water from the Pacific Ocean, which LA sits on the coast of, to fight the flames that have been spread by the strong winds and hot temperatures.

However, there’s a good reason why authorities are not doing that.

“Is there any particular reason why we can’t use ocean water to help put out the fires?,” one person asked on Twitter, as another claimed they had found a ‘solution’ to the wildfires, with a map pointing to the ocean.

My Husband Secretly Bought a Second House – One Day, I Drove There and Was Shocked by What I Found

They say secrets can destroy a marriage. When I discovered my husband had secretly bought a second house, I braced myself for the worst. But nothing could prepare me for what I found when I drove there. I ended up crying at the sight, and there was nothing that could console me.

How would you feel if the person you trusted most was hiding something so big that it could shake the foundation of your marriage? That’s the exact storm I walked into with my husband, Will. I’m Elizabeth, 28, and I’m here to share the story of the day I discovered Will’s secret… one that took me on an emotional rollercoaster I never saw coming.

Will and I had always been partners in every sense of the word. We had our quirks, but we always tackled life head-on together. Or at least, I thought we did.

It started a few months after I got pregnant. Will began working late — not just an extra hour or two, but so late he wouldn’t come home until almost midnight. At first, I told myself he was just stressed about the baby and about providing for us. But then the excuses started to wear thin.

One night, as we sat at the dinner table, I asked him directly, “Why are you working so late, Will? You’re never home most of the time.”

He didn’t even look up from his plate. “It’s just a busy time at the office, Lizzie. You know how it is.”

But I didn’t know how it was. And something about the way he avoided my eyes left me feeling uneasy.

“Will,” I pressed, my voice trembling slightly, “I miss you. We barely talk anymore. This baby… I can’t do this alone.”

He finally looked up, and for a moment, I caught a glimpse of something in his eyes. Was it guilt? Fear?

“You’re not alone, Lizzie,” he whispered, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. “I promise you’re not alone.”

“Then why does it feel like you’re slipping away?” I asked, tears threatening to spill. “Every night, I lie awake wondering where you are, what you’re doing…”

He pulled his hand back as if burned. “I’m doing everything for us, Lizzie. Please… just trust me.”

A few weeks later, as Will dozed off beside me, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. Normally, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but something compelled me to glance at the screen.

The message read: “Thank you for doing this. Love you. — P. 🤗

My heart dropped. Who was “P”? Why were they saying they loved him?

I froze, staring at the phone as if it might explode. I knew I shouldn’t, but I unlocked it anyway, my fingers trembling.

In his messages, I found a file about a second house. A SECOND HOUSE!

“What the hell?” I whispered, clutching the phone. My mind raced. Was this where he was going every night? Who was he meeting?

My hands shook as I scrolled through more messages, each one feeling like a dagger to my heart. Will stirred beside me, and I quickly put the phone down, my mind spinning with possibilities.

“Lizzie?” he mumbled sleepily. “You okay?”

I swallowed hard, fighting back tears. “Just the baby kicking,” I lied, placing a protective hand over my swollen belly. Our child. Our future. Was it all built on lies?

I couldn’t sleep that night. The next morning, when Will left for “work,” I tracked his geolocation on our shared app. Sure enough, he wasn’t at the office. He was at the address from the file.

I grabbed my car keys, my voice breaking as I whispered to my unborn child, “Let’s go find out what Daddy’s been hiding.”

An hour later, I arrived there. The house was beautiful — a yellow, storybook-style home with white shutters and a wraparound porch. It looked like something out of a dream.

I parked a few houses down, my heart pounding. As I approached, I saw the curtains shift, and then I saw him. Will was standing at the window and staring at me like he’d seen a ghost.

Before I could even process what was happening, a little boy came running out the door. He sprinted straight toward me, grinning.

“Are you here to help us?” he asked, his face glowing with excitement.

“Help with what?” I stammered, completely thrown off.

Before I could get an answer, the boy turned and ran back toward the house. Will was at the door in seconds, blocking my path.

“What are you doing here, Lizzie?” he asked, his voice trembling.

“No,” I said, stepping closer. “What are YOU doing here? Why do you have this house? And who is that boy?”

“Lizzie, please,” Will begged, his face ashen. “You shouldn’t be here. Not like this.”

“Not like this? How should I be here, Will? After getting another mysterious text from ‘P’? After more nights alone? Tell me, when would be a good time to discover my husband’s secret life?”

The little boy peeked out from behind Will’s legs. “Is she the lady from the picture? The one you’re always talking about?”

My heart started to pound. “Pictures? You talk about me here? To whom, Will? To your… to your other family?”

Will’s eyes widened in horror. “God, no, Lizzie! It’s not… please, just let me explain!”

Will’s face went pale, and for a moment, I thought he might faint. He glanced over his shoulder, then back at me.

“Then explain. What are you hiding? Where is she?”

“Lizzie, it’s not what you think,” he said quickly. “Please, just come inside, and I’ll explain everything.”

“Explain what?” I snapped, tears welling in my eyes. “Explain why you’ve been lying to me? Why you’ve been sneaking around?”

“Just trust me,” he pleaded. “Please, Lizzie.”

I wrapped my arms protectively around my belly, fighting back sobs. “Trust you? I trusted you every night you came home late. I trusted you when you said everything was fine. I trusted you with my heart, Will, and look where that got me!”

He stepped forward, reaching for me, but I backed away. “Don’t touch me! Not until you tell me the truth. All of it. Right here, right now.”

“Lizzie,” he choked out, “you’re shaking. Please come inside. Think of the baby.”

“The baby?” I laughed bitterly. “Now you want to think about the baby? Where was that concern all those nights I was alone, terrified about becoming a mother without my husband by my side?”

Against my better judgment, I followed him inside.

The scene inside the house was nothing like what I’d expected. My parents were painting the walls. Will’s brothers were assembling furniture. A few family friends and their kids were fixing up the kitchen. The entire house was buzzing with activity.

“What… what is this?” I whispered, staring around in disbelief. “What’s going on?”

Will took my hands in his, his eyes searching mine. “Lizzie, I bought this house for us. For you, me, and the baby. I wanted to surprise you.”

I pulled my hands away. “A SURPRISE? Will, this isn’t a surprise — this is a secret! Why didn’t you just tell me?”

Before he could answer, my mom appeared, holding a paintbrush. “Because I made him promise,” she said softly.

“Mom?”

“We’ve been struggling, Lizzie,” she admitted, her voice shaky. “Your dad and I lost our jobs a few months ago. Will gave us a way to stay afloat. He hired us to help fix up this house. That message you saw? That was me, thanking him.”

The room spun. Relief, guilt, anger, and gratitude all hit me at once.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell me? We could have figured something out together.”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears. “Oh, sweetheart. You’re about to have a baby. You needed to focus on that, not worry about us. Will came to us with this idea. He said it was a way to help everyone.”

“And that little boy?” I asked, looking around.

“Tommy,” Will’s friend called out. “My son. He’s been helping us paint… well, mostly just getting paint everywhere!”

I turned to Will, my emotions a tangled mess. “All this time, you were building us a home?”

“And helping your parents,” he said softly. “I wanted to do it right, Lizzie. Make it perfect. But I see now that keeping you in the dark was wrong. I was so focused on the end result, I forgot about the journey.”

He stepped closer. “I wanted to give you something better, Lizzie. I know how much you hate our current house… how cramped it is, how dark it feels. I wanted this to be our new beginning.”

“You should have told me. You put me through hell, Will. I thought you were cheating on me. I thought you had a secret family!”

“I know,” he said, tears welling in his eyes. “I’m sorry. I just didn’t want to stress you out. I thought I was doing the right thing.”

“Do you have any idea,” I choked out, “what it felt like reading that message? ‘Love you – P’? Do you know how I cried myself to sleep?”

Will’s face crumpled. “God, Lizzie, I never meant… Your mom, she signs her messages ‘P’ for ‘Pam.’ I should have thought about how it would look. I was so caught up in making everything perfect…”

“Perfect?” I interrupted. “Will, perfect would have been having my husband by my side. Perfect would have been sharing this dream together.”

He knelt and planted a gentle kiss on my belly. “I wanted to give our child everything we never had. A beautiful home, a yard to play in, grandparents nearby… I wanted to be the man you deserved.”

“You already were,” I whispered, finally letting him pull me close.

I stared at him, the weight of everything settling in. My anger started to fade, replaced by an overwhelming sense of love.

“No more secrets,” I whispered, pulling him into a hug. “Promise me, Will. No more secrets.”

“Never again,” he said, holding me tightly. “From now on, we build our dreams together.”

As I looked around the room, at my family and friends coming together to create a home for us, I realized how much love surrounded me. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t always easy. But it was real.

Later that evening, as I sat on the porch of our soon-to-be home, Will joined me, a cup of tea in his hands.

“So,” he said, nudging my shoulder. “What do you think?”

I smiled, tears in my eyes. “I think you’re an idiot. But you’re my idiot!”

He laughed, pulling me close. “I’ll take it.”

Will’s hand found mine, squeezing gently. “I can see us growing old here, rocking in chairs side by side.”

“Promise me something else?” I asked, looking up at him.

“Anything.”

“Promise me that no matter what happens, no matter how hard things get, we’ll always find our way back to this moment. And this feeling.”

He kissed my forehead, his voice brimming with emotion. “I promise, Lizzie. This house, this family, this love – it’s everything I’ve ever wanted. And I’m never letting go.”
