Iceland’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture approved three licenses to hunt up to 426 minke and fin whales every year for the next 5 years

Warning: This article contains graphic images of whale hunting which some readers may find distressing.

Iceland’s Minister of Food and Agriculture has issued fishing permits allowing people to hunt fin and minke whales for five years.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture received four applications for the fishing of the two types of whale.

And it has since been revealed in an update issued on December 5 that it’s granted the permits ‘in accordance with the provisions of Act No. 26/1949 on whaling’.

The licences

The license for fin whales was given to the largest Icelandic commercial whaling company, Hvalur hf, and the license for minke whales was given to a trawler owned by Tjaldtangi ehf.

The ‘fishing permit’ does what it says on the tin really, allowing the companies involved to take to the seas and hunt and kill whales.

Although, the Minister of Food and Agriculture notes the permits do come with a series of conditions which must be adhered to.

Terms and conditions

The government of Iceland’s website states it’s issued the permits based on assessments by the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Council (NAMMCO).

It argues a 2017 stock assessment found the number of fin whales has ‘been increasing steadily around Iceland since the start of whale counts in 1987’.

“The number in the last count (2015) was the highest since counts began. The best adjusted estimate for the entire count area of Iceland and the Faroe Islands in 2015 was 40,788 fin whales, of which 33,497 were in the East Greenland-Iceland stock area,” it adds.

The assessments subsequently advise on the maximum amount of whales allowed to be caught during the 2018-2025 period, the NAMMCO stating it shouldn’t ‘exceed 161 animals in the East Greenland/West Iceland fishing area and a maximum of 48 fin whales in the East Iceland/Faroe Islands area’.

And for minke whales?

Well, The Marine Research Institute ‘also recommends that the annual catch of minke whales in the years 2018–2025 should not exceed 217 animals’.

“In 2018, six minke whales were caught off Iceland and in 2021, one minke whale was caught. No minke whales were caught in 2024, in 2022, 148 animals were caught after a three-year fishing break, and 24 animals were caught in 2023,” it adds.

Altogether, this means up to 426 whales are allowed to be caught every year for the next five years.

The release argues: “The management of the exploitation of living marine resources in Iceland is under strict constraints and the total allowable catch of fin whales and minke whales shall follow the fisheries advice of the Marine Research Institute based on sustainable exploitation and the precautionary approach.”

It notes ‘only fin whales and minke whales are permitted to be hunted off Iceland, while other whale populations are protected’.

The website says that the licenses are granted for five years, adding: “The licenses are extended annually by one year and up to 20% of each year’s fishing quota may be carried over to the following year.”

However, the move has been met with fierce backlash from animal conservationist groups.

Backlash

Director of Marine Conservation Programmes at the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Sharon Livermore, said in a statement to IFLScience that Iceland has subsequently issued ‘a license to kill’.

She continued: “The few wealthy whalers of the country continue to exert their influence even in the dying hours of this interim government.

“This government should simply be holding the fort, but instead it has made a highly controversial and rushed decision – a five-year license for both fin and minke whales is a disaster for whales and a disaster for conservation.”

Killer whales learn to mimic humans

Drawing on studies showing that ‘whaling is inherently cruel,’ Livermore resolved: “There is simply no ethical way to kill a whale at sea.”

Posting to TikTok, Gerald Johnson told his 75,000 followers how it felt to have visited one place none of us want to end up back in 2016.

He reveals that, after suffering a heart attack, his “spirit left his physical body” and he went to hell. The destination came as quite a surprise to the pastor, as he claimed to have “done so much good in the world and helped so many people”.

During the five-minute video, the pastor went into detail about the things he saw, adding that he “wouldn’t wish it on any other man”.

“One of the things I saw that just blew me away was a man on all fours like a dog, he was burnt from the crown of his head to the souls of his feet,” he said. “He had a chain around his neck, it was a demon holding the chain. I knew that this demon was sent in this man’s life to ride him from his childhood to the time that he died.”

He then went on to outline some other very specific details, one of them involving 36-year-old singer and Fenty Beauty owner, Rihanna.

“It just blew me away, it still baffles me to this day,” Johnson continued. “There was a section in Hell where music was playing. It was the same music we hear on the Earth, but opposed to entertainers singing it, demons were singing it.

“While up here, you can listen to music to get over a breakup like ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’ [by Bobby McFerrin] or ‘Umbrella’ [by Rihanna], but down there every lyric to every song is to torment you.”

The pastor explained that this should be a stern warning for those who enjoy chart-topping pop songs as opposed to hymns and prayers.

Elsewhere in his recollection, he also explained how he got out of the “hole”

“I lifted up out of hell and I came back on the Earth and god began to speak to me – I actually saw the real Jesus,” he said. “He began to speak to me, and he said ‘you have been secretly upset with the people that hurt you, you have been hoping that I would punish the people who have hurt you.'”

He then went on to claim that God told him that he only wants him to focus on his own “assignment” – whatever that may mean.

“‘These are not your people these are my people, I only want you to focus on the assignment that I am giving you.'”

“Although I did good,” he continued. “The thing that I had in my heart was unforgiveness to people who have done me wrong.

The video has since been viewed 4 million times and had amassed over 12,000 comments, before comments were disabled. The audio has also been muted on TikTok, but is still available on Instagram.

“Wow the music part is wild,” wrote one user prior to the comments being disabled.

“Lucifer was once the angel of music wasn’t he? I believe every word you spoke. Music is hypnotizing without a doubt, it’s time for me to take a step back on listening to some of the genres I listen to,” added another.

A third said the message was an important one for musicians: “The message on music was very important for need to hear as a musician.”

And another user commented that they also “had an addiction to secular music,” adding: “…And some time ago I had a dream that I was in hell hearing that music and it was the most terrifying thing ever.”

Johnson did share a follow-up video answering some of the biggest questions he received since making his revelation, which can be seen below:

I don’t know whether Rihanna will be happy or sad about the fact that her music is that good that even demons in hell are doing their own renditions of it… Big yikes.

Nicole Kidman says she had to pause filming new erotic film as she ‘didn’t want to org*sm anymore’

Nicole Kidman has admitted that things got a little steamy while filming her new erotic drama that she had to temporarily pause production.

The 57-year-old actress stars in the forthcoming A24 film, Babygirl, opposite Iron Claw actor, Harris Dickinson.

The risqué flick sees Kidman take on the role of Romy, a married ambitious tech CEO who begins an intense affair with Samuel (Dickinson), an intern at the high-profile company.

The movie, which is directed by Halina Reijn, explores power dynamics and sexuality within a professional setting through the passionate relationship between Romy and Samuel.

So of course, there are many sexual scenes between the main characters, as well as Kidman and her husband in the film, played by Antonio Banderas, 64.

According to The Sun, this meant many days of filming led to an overwhelming amount of “touch” and “frustration” for the Oscar-winning actress.

“There was an enormous amount of sharing and trust and then frustration. It’s like, ‘Don’t touch me,'” Kidman revealed. “There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to org*sm anymore.'”

The actress, who has been married to country singer Keith Urban for 18 years, shared that sometimes she would feel drained by the process: “Don’t come near me. I hate doing this. I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life!”

“I’m over it…It was so present all the time for me that it was almost like a burnout,” she added.

Babygirl’s early premiere at Venice earned Kidman the Volpi Cup for best actress.

The Big Little Lies star shared in a recent Q&A that participating in a movie of this movie was new territory for her.

“There’s a sort of a jump off the cliff thing where you go, okay, I’m just going to abandon everything and explore this with the people that I trust in a genre that is already set, but hopefully we can explore new territory and especially with the female at the helm,” she shared, cited by PEOPLE.

She explained that trusting the filmmaker to keep her and her co-stars safe was important to the shooting process: “You have your director at the helm going, ‘I will protect you. Nothing that’s going to be in the film will be anything that you are not comfortable with. You are going to be okay.'”

Kidman also revealed that she and Dickinson had an “enormous amount of trust” in each other. The 28-year-old elaborated on this, saying: “Of course, there were days where I would go in really terrified of a scene or I don’t know how I’m going to do this.”

“There was never a day that if the scene wasn’t working or if we weren’t comfortable or we weren’t getting something, we never felt that time was more important. It was just like, ‘Okay, everyone go away for a second,'” he added.

The star, who recently turned 43 on Monday, took to Instagram with a series of disconcerting videos addressing the paparazzi, who she accused of making her look like she’s got a mask on while carrying a torch.

“I think my friend accidentally gave that to me, I don’t know,” she can be heard saying in the first clip.

She then went on to talk about her birthday, stating that she had turned 42, even though she’s technically 43 now.

As the video progressed, the ‘Toxic’ hitmaker went on to say that she’s only five years old and that she’s going to kindergarten.

Spears added that the media have also always been “incredibly cruel” to her. She acknowledged that while she is “not perfect by any means,” it is still not an excuse for them being “extremely mean and cruel.”

“And that’s why I’m moving to Mexico,” she concluded the video.

The video comes over a year after the singer got divorced from her then-husband Sam Asghari.

The pair called it quits in August 2023 after only 14 months of marriage though they were together for almost six years prior.

The couple initially met back in 2016 when the 30-year-old personal trainer earned himself a spot as a performer in the singer’s ‘Slumber Party’ music video. From a professional relationship, the two entertainers quickly moved to a more intimate one after spending some quality time together.

However, soon after exchanging vows in 2022, the couple decided to go their separate ways with Asghari citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason behind the split.

“The divorce was amicable and the prenup was not challenged,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “Britney is continuing to flex her freedom and is moving on.

“The report that she is in financial distress is false and she is not on any lease for him,” they added.

Initially, things seemed to get a little chaotic, with the two going back and forth in the press. However, it seems as though they’ve managed to bury the hatchet and appreciate their love for what it was.

In her memoir, The Woman in Me, Spears referred to her former partner as a “gift from God.”

“I have an appreciation for how stable he is,” an excerpt from the memoir read. “I love that he doesn’t drink. He’s a gift from God. And to find out that he and I were about to have a child together made me feel giddy.”

In another section, she also added: “He’s such an inspiration and I’m grateful.

“The timing of the end of the conservatorship was perfect for our relationship; we were able to establish a new life together, without limitations, and get married,” she wrote.

Upon hearing the kind remarks, Page Six reported that Asghari was pretty chuffed over Spears’ praise, stating: “That made me smile, to be honest. I’m freakin’ proud of her, and I hope she takes over the world.”

In a candid new interview during the Wicked press tour, the 31-year-old singer and actress shared her experiences of being in the public eye since her teenage years.

Fighting back tears, Grande reflected on the constant evaluation she’s faced: “I have been a specimen in a petri dish since I was 16 or 17, so I have heard it all.”

She highlighted the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, noting that even well-intentioned remarks can be damaging.

“Even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner and someone’s granny says, ‘Oh my God, you look skinnier, what happened?’ or ‘You look heavier, what happened?’ That is something that is uncomfortable and horrible no matter where it is happening.”

Grande stressed the importance of refraining from commenting on others’ appearances, stating, “I think today in society there is a comfortability that we shouldn’t have at all commenting on others’ looks, appearance, what they think is going on behind the scenes, or health, or how they present themselves.”

She described this tendency as “really dangerous” for everyone involved.

Earlier this year, Grande took to TikTok to address similar concerns, revealing that her previous appearance, which some considered “healthy,” was during a period when she was at her lowest point.

She shared, “I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly… but that, in fact, wasn’t my healthy.”

The pop star’s openness has sparked widespread support from fans and fellow celebrities alike. Model Bella Hadid echoed Grande’s sentiments, urging kindness and understanding, and emphasizing that “you never know what someone is going through.”

Grande’s message serves as a powerful reminder of the impact words can have and the importance of approaching others with compassion and respect.

As she continues to navigate her career and personal life in the public eye, her advocacy for mental health and self-acceptance remains a beacon for many facing similar challenges.

Dubbed The Doll, ‘a dangerous hit-woman’ has been arrested following several high profile murders

True crime fans might have someone new to investigate after a ‘dangerous hitwoman’ known as ‘The Doll’ has been arrested, and some are already joking that they ‘can’t wait for this Netflix series.’

The 23-year-old Colombian has been given the alias ‘La Muneca’ or ‘The Doll’, and she has now been arrested in connection to several targeted gangland killings.

Local press reports that one of the killings included her ex-lover as one of the victims.

Karen Julieth Ojeda Rodriguez was seen being taken away in handcuffs, following her alleged involvement in an ambush murder.

The incidents took place in the municipality of Barrancabermeja.

According to Spanish language news outlet Libertad Digital, ‘The Doll’ is reported to be connected to a series of crimes linked to the Los de la M gang.

It has not yet been revealed what charges she will face.

Reports on Infobae allege that Rodriguez has been working with a small group of hitmen in the region.

Her arrest is in connection with an ambush assassination of her ex on July 23.

Magdalena Medio Police say her ex-boyfriend, Deyvy Jesus, was caught unaware, after The Doll called him and persuaded him to meet.

Law enforcement claim Rodriguez lured her former lover to the scene of the crime so they could solve a money dispute.

Devvy ended up being shot multiple times by two men on a motorbike and police claim the hit was ordered by ‘The Doll’.

Rodriguez was arrested alongside Paula Valentina Joya Rueda, aged 24.

She has the less glamorous moniker of the two, known as ‘Gorda Sicaria’, which translates as ‘Fat Hitwoman’ says Libertad Digital.

A third accomplice called ‘Leopoldo’ was also arrested.

Police say they recovered a 9mm pistol and a revolver while making the arrests, and are currently working to establish whether either gun is the murder weapon.

Infobae reports Lieutenant Colonel Muaricio Herrara of the Magdalena Medio Police as saying: “With the capture of alias La Muneca and alias Leopoldo, a period of calm has been created in the region. These arrests mark progress in the dismantling of criminal structures responsible for the recent homicides.”

Social media users have flooded X (formerly Twitter) with posts thanks to ‘The Doll’s’ scowl in police photos.

“I can fix her,” someone wrote.

“So she’s single?” added another.

Others called for a documentary or series to be made about her and they’ve already suggested an actress: “Aubrey Plaza could nail that role”.

“I would watch three seasons,” a final one said.

People have been calling for Haliey Welch to face jail time over this alleged scam

People in the cryptospace are raging after buying into the Hawk Tuah girl’s new coin and one expert has insisted she and her team have actively ‘scammed’ fans.

The Hawk Tuah sensation, real name Haliey Welch, has been enjoying her fame since shooting to viral notoriety earlier this year.

And just like everyone who goes viral, she looked to capitalize on it, but in doing so Welch has made quite a few fans unhappy.

She decided to hop into the cryptocurrency industry and debuted her own meme coin called $HAWK.

How the Simpsons ‘predicted’ the Hawk Tuah Girl

The coin’s value completely tanked within 20 minutes of its launch – plummeting from as much as $490 million to just $41 million, leaving fans out of pocket.

Haliey Welch has received a lot of backlash in the wake of HAWK coin crashing (@HalieyWelchX/Twitter)

It has left investors claiming she carried out a rug pull, which is where creators of cryptocurrency sell off their stock leading to prices crashing and those who put money into it with coins worth next to nothing.

YouTube investigator Stephen ‘Coffeezilla’ decied to confront Welch and her team about the coin and has gone as far as to claim that they have ‘scammed’ people out of their money.

Speaking in a live stream to Welch and her team, he said: “This is one of the most miserable, horrible launches I’ve ever seen. I’ve been tracing it on the chain for a while. You guys generated over a million dollars in fees, while your fans got rug pulled. There were snipers, but there was also insider trading directly linked to y’all’s creator accounts.”

Now, in a YouTube video, he has broken down what he believes happened and reiterated his claim that they actively scammed people out of their money.

He said: “I want to break down the Hawk Tuah scam, I think people are confused with this kind of stuff.

“I want to start with this big tweet that kind of set it all off. That would be this tweet by Bubblemaps, which showed that 96 percent of the supply was controlled by the team and was being sent out to a bunch of smaller wallets.

“The implication being that some of them might be dumping on you.

“Pretty quickly the Hawk Tuah girl came in to copy and paste what her team told her to say which said ‘Team hasn’t sold one token and 1 KOL was given 1 free token, we tried to stop snipers as best we could through high fees at the start of the launch.’”

Coffeezilla went on to say that Welch’s team was ‘lying by omission’ when they say the team hasn’t sold one token because they allegedly ‘presold the tokens’.

He added: “They sold them to a bunch of investors with a presale and then those people were unlocked immediately upon launch.

“It is essentially a lie to say that her team didn’t sell tokens, well they presold them and then those investors then dumped on your fans, that is the problem.”

However, Welch has denied these accusations and has defended hers and her ‘teams’ actions during a live stream on Twitter.

“Hawkanomics: Team hasn’t sold one token and not 1 KOL was given 1 free token,” she tweeted in a copy and pasted message.

“We tried to stop snipers as best we could through high fee’s in the start of launch on @MeteoraAG. Fee’s have now been dropped.”

Ariana Grande held back tears before she revealed how she deals with comments on her body.

The star highlighted how she has had to deal with criticism about her since she was teenager, and explained how she deals with it now.

During an interview for the Wicked press tour, Grande revealed how she remains defiant to the constant criticism and comments she receives.

Speaking to French journalist Sally about the expectation to look perfect, she said: “I have been doing this in front of the public… I have been a specimen in a petri dish since I was 16 or 17 so I have heard it all.

“I have heard every version of it, I have heard what is wrong with me and then you fix it and it is wrong for different reasons but that is everything from….even the simplest thing with your appearance.

“You are young and you are hearing all sorts of things, it is hard to protect yourself from that noise.

“I think it is something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you are experiencing it on.”

Grande explained that people have becoming very comfortable talking about other peoples’ body and highlighted that this shouldn’t be the case, celebrity or not.

She continued: “Even if you go to thanksgiving dinner and someones granny says ‘oh my God you look skinnier what happened’ or ‘you look heavier what happened’.

“I think I am really lucky to have the support system that I have and to know and trust that I am beautiful and so are you and so are you.”

Grande closed her point by joking that she needed to get it off her chest and said she doesn’t invite the comments in anymore, as they simply aren’t welcome.

She reiterated the point that she has work to do and a life to live, and that she isn’t going to get derailed by her critics.

Theresa Birgin Lucas, of Bemidji, was heading home after visiting her family at a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, when she stumbled across a rare stormy sight.

She was traveling on Highway 64 when clouds rolled over ahead into what some have described as a ‘seascape of crashing ocean waves’ – though the mom didn’t even notice at the time.

In her post on Facebook, Theresa explained she snapped the picture to give her daughter a heads-up of her whereabouts as she had become worried.

Theresa wrote: “She was freaking out and wanted to know how much longer it was before I got home, so I seriously snapped that photo and said ‘I’m close to Akeley’.”

She claims she didn’t even look at the image until she was home and her daughter pointed out it ‘looked pretty cool’.

Commenting on the bizarre cloud formation, Theresa told the news outlet KVRR: “It seriously looks like the sky is going to unzip.”

She promptly posted the shot to social media where it immediately took off and went viral.

The photograph captured viewers from all over the globe with people far and wide asking her about the stunning scene.

Theresa joked: “I should be giving credit to my fraidy cat daughter.”

When some queried if the image was photoshopped or AI-generated, Theresa confirmed to PetaPixel that it was taken on an iPhone 8.

She explained: “It truly was just a quick picture taken off my iPhone 8, which cracks me up.

“It is a Live Photo — it’s funny to watch it, music playing and bug splats on my windshield!

“I really like the beauty in the photo knowing that nothing has been touched.”

The viral snap is now making the rounds again as the ‘seascape in the sky’ continues to hit a nerve.

Users on Reddit said they have been staring at the photograph, unable to tear away and thinking ‘the waves are gonna crash on the road’.

Another wrote: “It actually makes me feel uneasy. I can’t unsee a giant deadly wave.

“I don’t like looking at it.”

As for the phenomenon itself, KVRR meteorologist, Mariah Bush, explained Theresa’s image is ‘very rare’ indeed.

The expert said: “My initial thought was maybe some basic clouds, cumulus nimbus clouds, or even a shelf cloud, but then after further looking there are some clouds I have never even seen before myself.

“So, pretty unique, actually.”

Theresa told FOX 35 News: “I was just lucky to be in the right time at the right place. Not sure why but I was!”

Having named the photo, Ocean in the Sky, Theresa entered the snap in the Minnesota State Fair competition in 2022.
