Cillian Murphy Returns As Zombie In 28 Years Later Trailer, Shocking Fans

The Oscar-winning actor is back on screen, but not in the way fans are used to seeing him.
Set nearly 30 years into a dystopian Britain overrun by a flesh-eating virus, Cillian Murphy is making a highly anticipated return to the franchise that, in his own words, “changed everything” for him.
Although Murphy had appeared in several films before the release of the 2002 zombie classic 28 Days Later, his role as Jim, a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover the UK decimated by zombies, became a pivotal moment in his career.

Following the film’s success, his acting career soared, eventually earning him an Academy Award earlier this year for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal in Oppenheimer.

When asked earlier this year about completing the trilogy for the 28 film franchise, Murphy expressed his enthusiasm, telling Variety:
“I’ve always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me and I have great affection for it and for those guys Alex [Garland], and Danny [Boyle].”

That vision has now become a reality with the release of the trailer for 28 Years Later, which dropped on December 10.

The announcement confirmed that Alex Garland and Danny Boyle, the creative minds behind the original film, co-wrote the screenplay, with Boyle returning to the director’s chair.

A teaser poster for the film, unveiled by Sony Pictures on Instagram on December 6, featured the chilling tagline, “time didn’t heal anything.”

Many people believe Cillian Murphy will return to the ’28’ film franchise as a zombieSony Pictures Entertainment
The first film ended on a hopeful note, showing Jim, played by Murphy, along with Selena (Naomie Harris) and Hannah (Megan Banks), signaling to the RAF with a massive “HELLO” banner as a plane flew overhead.

However, if the trailer for 28 Years Later is any indication, things didn’t turn out as optimistically for Jim as fans had hoped.

While Murphy reprises his role, the new cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, suggesting Jim’s fate may have taken a darker turn, leaving no room for a “live and well” version of his character.

Instead, the trailer reveals Murphy’s character returning as a zombie, much to the shock of fans.
On Reddit, one user exclaimed: “Omg zombie Cillian Murphy!”

Another added: “The one second shot of Cillian Murphy is giving me a bone deep sense of terror,”

Cillian Murphy will return to our screens as Jim but maybe not how we remember himFox Searchlight Pictures
One fan shared their reaction: “Seeing the ‘hero’ end up like that makes it feel more ‘real’ than a movie should have any right to lol.”

Another remarked: “It’s almost like a greatest hits collection of the last two movies.” and “Zombies in the church, the wave coming over the hill, the tunnel fight in the dark.”

Speculation grew further when a fan noted: “And was that Cillian Murphy at 1:47?!”
Another chimed in: “We already know Cillian has a small part in this one, and a much bigger role in part 2. I’m guessing it’s not a spoiler at all, we just don’t have the proper context for it.”

Ralph Fiennes also revealed that the new film is part of a trilogy, with two installments—28 Years Later and 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple—already filmed.

The release date for 28 Years Later has been set for June 20, 2025, and fans are already counting down the days.
