Two Victims of a School Shooting, 5-Year-Old Elias & 6-Year-Old Roman, Are in Critical Condition – Details
After initial details concerning the shooting at Feather Adventist School were released, the families of two young boys who were shot have provided updates on how they are doing.
Five-year-old Elias and six-year-old Roman Mendez are two kindergartners who were wounded during a school shooting at Feather River Adventist School in Palermo. Since the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 4, reports state that the two little boys are being treated at a Sacramento trauma center.
The sister of the six-year-old provided updates to Action News concerning her brother’s condition. Roman, who is receiving care at U.C. Davis Medical Center, had injuries on his back and chest, and doctors informed his family that he had a total of four wounds. However, the loved ones said they are unsure of whether a few of those injuries “were exit wounds.”
Thankfully, Roman’s sister divulged that the little boy’s surgeries have been successful, but he still faces a tough and lengthy recovery ahead. Action News also reports that Roman’s twin brother Armani Mendez, who also attends Feather Adventist School, bore witness to the shooting.
On the same day the shooting happened, Roman’s sister, Vanessa Diaz, took to Facebook with a tearjerking post showing a photo of Roman’s little arm hooked up to medical machines and covered with what appeared to be an arm brace.
In her caption above the picture, Vanessa disclosed the same details that she shared with Action News concerning the six-year-old’s successful surgeries. She also added that while Roman is in “critical condition,” he is “showing incredible strength.”
“Please keep him, our family, and all the other children and families affected in your thoughts and prayers. During this difficult time, I am trying to keep my other little brother’s spirits up as we navigate this together. 🤍✝️,” pleaded Vanessa at the end of her caption.
After seeing her post, a concerned netizen reached out to Vanessa, asking, “How’s your other brother was he shot too sending prayers to you and your family [sic].” In response to the query, Vanessa penned, “he was not but he witnessed it all 💔 thank you [sic].”
The day after the incident, Vanessa and the twins’ other sisters banded together to create a fundraising page on GiveSendGo to try and alleviate medical expenses. They attached a heartwarming photo of the two adorable boys playing in water.
In their message, they expressed, “While he is receiving the best possible care, this has turned our family’s world upside down, and we are struggling to navigate this unimaginable situation. As his sisters, we’re coming together to support him and his twin brother during this incredibly difficult time.”
Roman and Armani’s sisters then noted how they need funds to cover “proper clothing, medical care, therapy, and other essentials” for when Roman is discharged from the hospital. “Additionally, the costs of traveling to and from the hospital, along with hotel stays to remain close to him, are adding up quickly and are more than we can manage alone,” they added.
The twins’ sisters’ message also included a plea to the public for any donation, prayer, or kind words they can muster. They concluded, “Thank you for your love, support, and generosity. We are deeply grateful for anything you can do to help our little brother and family move forward from this tragedy.” Thus far, they have managed to raise a total of $10,249 out of their goal amount of $15,000.
Like Vanessa and her sisters, the grandmother of the other little boy involved in the shooting spoke out about the tragedy as well. A Facebooker named Orlando Carmona shared a message that little Elias’ grandmother Debbie Wolford had written about her grandson, which was accompanied by an adorable photo of the five-year-old.
Debbie asked the public to pray for her grandson, who at that time, had just been shot. “From what we are hearing he was airlifted to the hospital because he was shoot [sic] twice by a 9mm – once in the kidney and in the chest and had lost a lot of blood. He is in surgery right now 🙏🏻💔🙏🏻💔🙏🏻,” divulged Debbie.
Sometime after her first message, Debbie shared an update on Elias’ condition. She alerted the public that the little boy had come out of surgery and mentioned how he had a CT scheduled and would be transferred to the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit).
She then shared that the bullet that injured Elias had gone through his stomach and lung and had “clipped a bit of the pancreas,” which prompted doctors to administer an exploratory laparotomy. Debbie also said that Elias had a chest tube before adding, “They may have to go back in later but he’s going to PICU for now.”
Like Orlando, another Facebooker named Les Potter shared Debbie’s full statement and wrote her own message, which reads, “Prayers for Elias tonight and for the other child that was shot in today’s school shooting at Feather River School of Seventh Day Adventists in Palermo.”
Yesterday, December 5, a woman named Stephanie Reynolds Bever shared that she has organized a candlelight vigil for the shooting victims today (Friday, December 6) at 5:15 p.m. at the Christmas Tree in Downtown Oroville.
“This is going to be lifting up the families and we want to speak the message that we believe in miracles, please bring all your positive energy and let’s unite! […] We will gather and lift these boys and their families up. From yesterday’s tragic incident. Elias & Roman. Please join our community [sic],” stated Stephanie.
Aside from the updates provided by Roman and Elias’ family members and the public, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea also addressed the situation yesterday.
After reiterating the conditions of both boys, the sheriff revealed, “We have positively identified the suspect and are diligently working to establish the motive.” He then noted how the police department would be hosting a press briefing.
During the briefing, Kory spoke about Elias and Roman being in critical condition and how they were transported to local hospitals after the shooting. “I’m thankful that they are still alive, but they have a long road ahead of them, and I’d certainly hope that you’ll all keep them in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward,” he said.
At another point during the conference, the sheriff shared details about the male shooter and the suspected reason for his actions. According to Kory, the perpetrator had booked an appointment with an administrator from the school to “explore the possibility of enrolling a family member as a student.”
The shooter met with the school administrator, and reportedly, the meeting was amicable and did not prompt any cause for concern. Kory then mentioned that a current goal of the investigation is to determine whether the attacker really did have a family member to enroll or if it was simply a ruse.
Following the meeting, the shooting occurred after which, the shooter took his own life. The sheriff then disclosed, “We have received some information that leads us to believe that the subject responsible for the shooting targeted this school because of its affiliation with the Seventh Day Adventist Church.”
Kory said that with the current information he has at the moment he believes the shooting to be “an isolated incident,” however, he and his team have sent an alert out to law enforcement agencies throughout the state of California advising them of the shooting “out of an abundance of caution.”
He also advised such agencies that “the subject may have targeted this school because of its affiliation with that particular religious organization.” Police officials did this to ensure that the agencies remain vigilant and to make sure to protect students at such schools.

The sheriff also mentioned how enforcement has been in contact with leadership at the Seventh Day Adventist Church and other parties involved in overseeing the schools to make them aware of the incident for safety purposes.

He also revealed that after sharing how the shooter arrived at the school in a vehicle at the last press briefing, police have now uncovered the identity of the Uber driver who dropped him off. The sheriff said that the individual was being interviewed by investigators.
Biden’s pardon sparked a crisis. Democrats say this is his chance to do better. | Opinion
By the end of his term in January 2021, Donald Trump had approved more clemency actions than President Joe Biden has so far.
There’s an age-old concept – in crisis, opportunity – that should be deployed as President Joe Biden winds down his administration by signing off on pardons, commutations and other acts of clemency.
By now, you must have heard the cacophony of controversy after Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden on Sunday, giving him a get-out-of-jail-free card on convictions for federal gun and tax charges.
Biden, who had long promised to stay clear of his son’s cases and respect the outcome, has been castigated for a solid week by Republicans and Democrats for such a blatant flip-flop at the end of his term, when there is little political price for him to pay.
Biden owns all that. Some allies see him as justified. But plenty of people see it as a black mark on his half-century of public service.
That’s done. Condemnation won’t change anything in this crisis Biden created for himself. So what comes next?
Biden has an opportunity here to add something else to his legacy – a thoughtful, comprehensive approach to clemency in the final 45 days of his presidency.
Opinion: By selfishly pardoning his son Hunter, Joe Biden flat-out destroyed his legacy
Democrats in Congress say don’t stop at Hunter Biden
U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, a Massachusetts Democrat who has advocated for reforming how clemency is granted in criminal cases, sent Biden a letter two weeks ago – before he pardoned his son – calling on the president to lean into his clemency authority in the closing weeks of his administration.
Sixty-six of her Democratic House colleagues signed on.
Pressley told me she agreed with Biden’s rationale for his son’s pardon, that he had been unfairly targeted for prosecution because of who his dad is. But she noted that the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of The Pardon Attorney has a backlog of more than 10,000 people seeking some sort of clemency.
Donald Trump had approved by the end of his term in January 2021 more clemency actions than Biden has so far.
“Don’t stop at Hunter Biden,” Pressley said. “This is a matter of legacy. I would hate to think that Joe Biden could end his legacy and, in history’s recounting, that we could ever have a scenario where Donald Trump has a better track record on clemency than Joe Biden.”
In her letter with colleagues and again this week, Pressley called on Biden to “consider pardons for those in federal custody with unjustified sentencing disparities, the elderly, the chronically ill, people on death row, women punished for crimes of their abusers, and many, many more.”
Opinion: Biden was right to pardon his son. Trump would have made Hunter a target.
Advocacy groups are pushing hard for a clemency rush
FWD.us, a bipartisan political organization that advocates for immigration and criminal justice reform, took a different approach this week in asking Biden to step up his clemency game. The group is talking to the president through his television.
Zoë Towns, executive director of FWD.us, told me her group invested $150,000 to start airing a commercial on CNN and MSNBC, specifically targeting shows Biden is known to watch, like “Morning Joe.”
The group plans to up that to “a pretty robust six-figure spend” in this “audience of one” effort to reach the president, Towns said.
Biden campaigned in 2020 on eliminating the death penalty at the federal level. That’s not a promise he kept.
But Towns and Pressley both find hope in Biden’s actions in office to grant clemency to people convicted for marijuana possession on federal lands or ousted from the military during the discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that prohibited gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals from serving.
Opinion: Biden promised no jail time for weed. He’s running out of time to pardon cannabis convicts.
Towns wants Biden to dig into cases prepped by the Office of the Pardon Attorney for people serving “disproportionately long sentences” ruled on years ago under sentencing practices unlikely to be used today.
“We think that a carefully vetted group of hopefully very many people who are serving out-of-step sentences should be taken super seriously by the president as he takes this effort on and hopefully grants as many clemencies in that group as possible,” Towns said.
Biden shouldn’t be afraid of wielding his power
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, asked Monday about any looming clemency actions, said Biden is “thinking through that process very thoroughly.”
She added that she had no timeline to make public about it, but she noted that presidencies usually conclude with a round of pardons or other actions.
That’s too slow for Pressley. Biden’s term ends on Jan. 20. She wants people granted clemency home by Christmas.
“I don’t want him to wait until January, because we don’t know what procedural hurdles – given that we have an incoming hostile administration – that they might put in place or what they might undo,” Pressley said. “So he has a responsibility and the authority to change lives.”
And here, at the end of our conversation, the congresswoman offered a take on her political party and the use of power that I had not considered. But it rang true as I heard her describe it.
She said that, while reflecting on the outcome of last month’s election, she was unable to shake the feeling that Democrats can be afraid of power and intimidated in using it.
“I think many understand that we seek to be the adults in the room, but I don’t know that they always see us as the fighters in the room,” Pressley said. “And so what I’m saying in this moment is – President Biden, you have the authority. You have the power. Use it.”
Biden did that for his son. He should get to work, doing it for others.
Apex the $45M stegosaurus on display in NYC. Here’s what scientists hope to learn
The most expensive dinosaur fossil ever discovered will be on view in New York starting this weekend
NEW YORK — The most expensive dinosaur fossil ever discovered will be on view in New York starting this weekend, American Museum of Natural History officials announced Wednesday.
The giant stegosaurus fossil, dubbed “Apex,” is 11 feet (3.3 meters) tall and 27 feet (8.2 meters) nose to tail. The display will start in a giant atrium at the museum’s entrance before being moved to the museum’s existing fossil halls next year.
The museum also confirmed the identity of the philanthropist who purchased Apex. Billionaire hedge fund manager and longtime museum donor Ken Griffin bought it at an auction in July for $45 million, the most ever paid for dinosaur remains. Sean Decatur, president of the American Museum of Natural History, said that Griffin approved a long-term loan of Apex, as well as allowing scientists to take samples from the fossil for analysis.
“This partnership allows Apex to have pride of place at a museum world-renowned for its dinosaur collection and for its longstanding leadership in paleontology and, even more exciting, enables us to pursue specialized Stegosaurus research centered around this extraordinary and scientifically important specimen,” Decatur said in a statement Wednesday.
Of the more than 80 stegosauri made available to scientific institutions, very few are substantially complete, the statement said. Apex is the most complete specimen ever found, Decatur said. With about 80% of its 320 bones preserved, it is miraculous for creature that has been dead for 150 million years. The specimen is also prized by scientists because it is estimated to have died at a relatively old age, and it could reveal insights into stegosaurus metabolism and bone growth.
Scientists will make CT scans of the internal structures of the dinosaur’s skull and analyze a small sample extracted from one of its giant thigh bones, the statement said.
“As exciting as is it is to have this dinosaur on display, it is even more exciting to have the opportunity to study it and make important scientific data available for research,” said Roger Benson, who curates the American Museum of Natural History’s fossil amphibians, reptiles, birds and plants.
The museum’s paleontologists have a long record of breaking ground in dinosaur research, including identifying the first dinosaur eggs and early evidence of dinosaur feathers, the statement said.
Commercial paleontologist Jason Cooper discovered in Apex on his land near Dinosaur, Colorado, on the Utah border near Dinosaur National Monument.
Griffin’s successful $44.6 million bid for Apex over the summer set a record for dinosaur remains, beating out the $31.8 million paid for “Stan,” the remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex sold in 2020. Like Apex, the Stan fossils were purchased by a private individual with plans to make it available to the public. The T. rex has been slated to be on display in Abu Dhabi, in United Arab Emirates, at a museum that opens in late 2025.

Manhunt for UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killer enters 3rd day
Brian Thompson’s company said their “hearts are broken.”
UnitedHealth Group, has released a statement saying their “hearts are broken” and that they have been “touched by the huge outpouring of kindness and support” since CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down in Manhattan early Wednesday.
The masked gunman appeared to be lying in wait outside the Hilton hotel in what police said was a “premeditated” attack. The shooter arrived at the scene about five minutes before Thompson before shooting the victim in the chest around 6:40 a.m., police said.
Video captured the moment the gunman walked up behind the CEO, pointed his gun at him and fired. A witness fled as Thompson stumbled and fell to the ground. The gunman then walked closer to Thompson, firing more times before fleeing.

“So many patients, consumers, health care professionals, associations, government officials and other caring people have taken time out of their day to reach out. We are thankful, even as we grieve,” UnitedHealth Group, parent company of the division Thompson was CEO of — UnitedHealthcare — said in their latest statement. “Our priorities are, first and foremost, supporting Brian’s family; ensuring the safety of our employees; and working with law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice.”
“We, at UnitedHealth Group, will continue to be there for those who depend upon us for their health care,” the statement continued. “We ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy as they mourn the loss of their husband, father, brother and friend.”
The killer of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson entered New York by bus Nov. 24, when a surveillance camera at Port Authority Bus Terminal caught his arrival at 9 p.m., law enforcement sources told ABC News.
Police are investigating whether the suspect left the city by bus the day of the shooting on Dec. 4.
The inbound bus originated in Atlanta but it was not immediately clear where the suspected boarded.
The 10 day period is the focus of investigative efforts as police have collected a lot of video of the suspect all over the city — in the subway, in cabs and even in a McDonald’s. Each place he paid with cash and he made sure to keep his mask on, which indicates to detectives he knew he was coming to the city to commit the murder.
The suspect likely checked into the hostel at 103/Amsterdam on the Nov. 24, checked out and then checked back in again on Nov. 30. It’s not clear when the surveillance image was captured.
The NYPD released new photos of the suspect, seen without a mask, on Thursday, while asking for the public’s help in identifying him. The images were taken from a surveillance camera at the HI New York City Hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Police had obtained a warrant to search after coming to believe the suspect stayed there, sources told ABC News.

Police were able to find an image of the suspect without his face mask because of an exchange in which the shooter obliged the desk clerk’s request to show his face occurred because the desk clerk is required to match a guest’s face with a photo ID, police sources told ABC News.
As he stood at the check-in desk, the sources said the woman asked to see his smile. The suspected shooter obliged, pulling down his mask long enough for the surveillance camera to capture his face.
The suspected shooter checked into the hostel using a New Jersey license that wasn’t his own, police sources told ABC News. Detectives ran the name and found it did not resemble any known photos of the suspect or other evidence amassed so far, the sources said.
Police place bullet casing markers outside of a Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan where United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot on Dec. 4, 2024 in New York City.
His check-in date was Nov. 30, but officials believe that the suspected shooter was in the city prior to that date.
Law enforcement sources told ABC News that he arrived last month from Atlanta, Georgia. He took a Greyhound bus into Port Authority Terminal in Midtown.
Both Greyhound and the parent company of the hostel, Hostelling International USA, said in a statement that they are “fully cooperating with the NYPD” but cannot comment further due to the active investigation.

Detectives are currently canvassing other hostels and locations on the Upper West Side and beyond, showing the suspect’s picture as they work to identify him, sources said.
They are working to learn more about the man’s whereabouts in the time between his arrival to New York City and the shooting incident.
Thompson was a longtime executive whose rise at the company came after a stint as a business advisor at global consulting giant PwC, according to his LinkedIn page.

Inside I’m A Celeb’s Danny Jones’ strained relationship with his dad he hasn’t spoken to in 18 years
McFly’s Danny Jones has been estranged from his father Alan for nearly two decades, and the singer has admitted that he still harbours ‘anger’ towards him every Father’s Day
I’m A Celebrity’s Danny Jones shared a deeply personal revelation about finding a paternal presence in campmate Barry McGuigan and the reason why.
Amidst their time in the jungle, an extraordinary connection blossomed between them, leading the 38-year-old McFly frontman to tell the boxing legend: “And I’ve also found a dad.” Estranged from his father Alan for nearly two decades after he left the family, Danny has yet to reconcile or visit him in Spain, where he now resides.
The vocalist confided that as a child he revered his father, but the admiration turned to hurt when Alan separated from his mother Kathy amid McFly’s rise to fame. At the tender age of 19 faced with his dad’s absence, Danny sought counselling to combat anxiety. The star opened up, saying: “I had a massive bout of anxiety when I was 19 when my dad left.
“I feel sorry for any kid out there whose mum and dad have split up. It’s their responsibility, they chose to have the kids, so they’ve got to be adult about it and stay in touch. It’s hard for a child because you crave that and you miss it, but I feel like I’ve become way more of a man than I’d ever be before because I’ve learned a lot from it, I’ve achieved so much and it’s made me hungrier and not scared of stuff, I’ve become stronger.”

The guitarist has opened up about the lingering ‘anger’ he feels every Father’s Day, admitting that he no longer has a relationship with his father. He shared his past struggles, saying: “When I’ve seen my mum in so much pain, it was hard, reports OK!. I wish I knew what I knew now, to have a chat with him at the time. But I was a peacemaker, an absolute peacemaker.
“I was scared of emotion, I was scared of talking real talk because I wanted everything to be perfect, if they argued I was like ‘no, be quiet.’ What I try and teach my son now is that emotions are okay, show me your emotions I want to feel it, because that is the best way of solving anything.”
Danny, who is joyfully married to former Miss England Georgia Horsley, 37, and dad to their six year old son Cooper, did not invite his father to their 2014 wedding, and his dad has yet to meet his grandson. Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast in 2022, he further expressed: “On Father’s Day I’m angry that’s getting in the way of me having a good time with my family and my son. I idolised him, and my mum, they’re my first people I looked up to.”
Meanwhile, last month, Danny’s estranged father broke his silence regarding their long-standing rift, attributing the strained relationship to his acrimonious divorce from Danny’s mother Kathy. Despite the fallout, he spoke fondly of Danny to the Daily Mail, calling him a ‘lovely lad’ with a ‘heart of gold’, and reminisced about their ‘excellent’ bond during Danny’s childhood in Bolton, highlighting his own dedication to Danny’s burgeoning music career.

Radio DJ Alan, who currently resides in Benidorm with his wife Sharon, remains hopeful that he will meet his grandson one day, saying “one day it will happen” and he’ll “finally get that pint with his son.”
However, since relocating to Spain in 2016, Alan has not been visited by his son Danny, and he was also absent from his daughter Vicky’s wedding last year. Following a “bitter divorce” from Danny’s mum Kathy, Alan expressed his feelings to the Daily Mail, stating that he believes Danny may be avoiding him in order to protect his mother.
“I feel as though he’s painted himself into a corner and he doesn’t know how to get out,” he said. “I think because he loves his mum so much he’s protected her, and I think any reunion with me, and this is only my opinion, would upset his mum. I don’t think he wants to do that, and I understand that.”
Alan has settled into a new life in Spain, hosting a three-hour radio show on Radio Fresh five days a week, and living in a two-bedroom chalet with stunning mountain views. He remains optimistic about meeting his son in the future, saying, “I always keep my fingers crossed that one day [a meet-up] will happen, but Danny is in charge of that, not me,”.
Fox News Contributor Dr Kelly Powers Dies at 45, Leaving Behind Her 3-Year-Old Child
The physician and surgeon is remembered for her courage, compassionate spirit, and unwavering commitment to helping others.
Dr Kelly Powers, who was a regular contributor on Fox News shows died on December 1, 2024, at the age of 45. She left behind her three-year-old son, Bennett Joseph Doll.
Powers succumbed to glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2020. Her diagnosis came after a severe incident where she collapsed in her apartment, sustaining multiple injuries, including a cracked skull and bruises.
Her father found her unconscious in a pool of blood and called 911. “After tests, imaging & further evaluation, I was diagnosed with a BRAIN TUMOR (**I cannot believe I’m actually writing that as I’m still in disbelief**). I was transferred to a more specialized hospital and am scheduled for brain surgery on Monday,” Powers shared on Instagram.
After her diagnosis, she was overwhelmed with fear, anxiety, and anticipation but also held onto faith. She expressed her struggle to process the reality of what lay ahead, including surgery and its challenges.
Powers penned, “I write this post to kindly ask of you all for a small prayer &/or positive vibe in my honor to watch over me during surgery & in my healing thereafter.”
The physician’s courage shone through as she underwent three brain surgeries, several rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
While managing her health challenges, Powers and her husband, Steven Doll, aspired to start a family. Her cardiologist advised against pregnancy due to her condition, so they opted for surrogacy. Bennett was born on March 20, 2021, at 10:04 a.m. as Powers continued undergoing treatments.
A happy Powers posted a collage of pictures of her newborn with her and her husband on Instagram, writing, “We are all doing well & so happy to start this new adventure as a family of 3 (well, family of 5 with Nigel & Lucy 🐾).”
Powers then experienced a period of remission and expressed immense gratitude for her blessings. However, on February 24, 2024, she shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram that her cancer had returned, posting imaging of the brain tumor.
Remaining resilient, she stated, “Riding high, then shot down 🤬 But, nope…this lil’ nugget is not going to win. Caught it early and a lot of tests & scans are favorable. 🙏🏻 I got this💪🏼.”
Conventional chemotherapy and radiation proved ineffective after the cancer returned. Therefore, Powers’ family went for a groundbreaking therapy, offered by CeGat, which they said represented her best chance for survival. The family launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the innovative treatment available exclusively in Germany.
They required financial assistance as the cost of the treatment was not covered by insurance. Additionally, the family was relying on a single income making the treatment a significant financial burden. The campaign successfully raised $88,009 before being closed after Powers’ demise.
Family and friends are now mourning Powers, remembering her as a brilliant and kind human being. Her remarkable qualities were evident throughout her life, including her time at several prestigious institutions. Powers attended St. Bartholomew’s School and graduated from the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School.

She completed her undergraduate studies at Baruch College in New York and went on to attend the New York College of Podiatric Medicine for medical school. Biden at tree lighting says his holiday wish is for US to continue to seek light, liberty and love
President Joe Biden has presided over his final Christmas tree lighting at the White House
WASHINGTON — As he presided over his final Christmas tree lighting at the White House, President Joe Biden on Thursday said his wish for the nation now, and always, was that “we continue to seek the light of liberty and love, kindness and compassion, dignity and decency.”
Biden spoke briefly to the crowd who were decked out in heavy winter layers as frigid winds and chilly temperatures hit the nation’s capital. Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were also in attendance. The tree has been set up on the Ellipse outside the White House South Lawn, and it’s visible on the streets.
The 30-foot red spruce tree came from Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Grayson County, Virginia. It was transferred to the White House on Nov. 15.
It’s the final holiday stretch for Biden. His wife, Jill, has decked out the White House with whimsical decorations to evoke the “peace and light” of the season. She missed the lighting this year because she was in Doha, Qatar, where she was discussing her initiative on women’s health.
So Biden did the honors himself, counting down from five before the tree light up a cheery bright green from the tip-top to the bottom of the trunk. He wished the crowd a Merry Christmas before stepping down to take his seat for musical performances.
Biden said the theme reflects the “peace we feel as we pause and reflect our on blessings and the light we see as we gather with loved ones and cherish our time together.”
The tree lighting ceremony is an annual tradition. On Thursday, Trombone Shorty and Trisha Yearwood were among the performers.
The White House Christmas display includes a towering tree surrounded by an amusement park-style carousel, brass-colored bells and sleigh bells lining a hallway, and a ceiling design that mimics snowfall.
That tree came from a farm in Newland, North Carolina, where Hurricane Helene struck earlier this year. The Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm, which had stood for decades, lost thousands of trees to a mudslide.
