Hospice nurse Julie McFadden recalled one of her more harrowing stories as an end-of-life expert

A hospice nurse has recalled one of the scariest experiences she’s had with a patient as they passed away.

Julie McFadden, known as Hospice Nurse Julie on social media, is known for sharing her experiences in end-of-life care as she aims to remove the stigma around death.

The 41-year-old has almost three million followers across her accounts, with 1.6 million coming from TikTok alone, and has even written a book which teaches people about what happens in your end-of-life journey.

But now, she has recalled a ‘wild’ experience with a patient that was ‘actively dying’.

McFadden, who aims to ‘normalise death and dying’ and remove fear from people’s minds, has previously explained that active dying is the set of behaviours that occur right before someone passes away.

It’s essentially the final stage of someone’s life, and she has now claimed that she could hear one man’s voice despite the fact he was unconscious at the time.

The nurse recalled the man’s last moments in a video, revealing that she ‘got to know him’, but sadly saw him enter the ‘active dying phase’.

While he was under the supervision of a continuous care nurse, the health expert said that she knew he would die the same day that she saw him for the last time.

However, what she experienced during this final encounter wasn’t like anything she’d seen before.

“When he was in the actively dying phase, which means like the very last few days of death, we had a continuous care nurse in there caring for him on his last days,” she said in the YouTube video.

McFadden continued: “And when I last saw him, he was fully unconscious and I could tell as a hospice nurse that he was going to die that day.

“So, I was in his room and I was kind of saying my goodbyes silently to him and that was it.”

But as she was leaving, she thought about their relationship, thanking him, and claimed that there and then, she could ‘hear his voice’ in her head.

The nurse said it was ‘wild’ as things like this don’t happen to her, and she even admitted that it was hard to talk about as she was ‘sceptical’ about it all.

As the man’s voice kept talking in her head, she explained: “He was saying my name.

“He was going, ‘Oh my gosh, Julie. Oh my gosh, Julie’, and he was making me feel things. I could feel like exuberance or freedom or like I was flying almost,” she claimed.

McFadden previously revealed that one of the scarier parts of actively dying is the ‘death rattle’.

“It’s literally just a bit of saliva collecting at the back of their throat because their mouth is open, their breathing is going over their saliva and causing a gurgle,” she explained.

But while that is common, hearing a dying person’s voice in your head isn’t, believe it or not.

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is celebrating the work done to revive the ‘Ancient City of Gold’

Archaeologists have finally completed their revival of a 3,000-year-old Ancient Egyptian landmark known as the ‘lost city of gold’.

Found by Egyptologists in 2021, the discovery was hailed after being found by experts examining the area.

Dating back to roughly 1,000 BC, the complex is an old mining facility. And in the time since then, work has taken place through Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, represented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The project, dubbed ‘Reviving the Ancient City of Gold’ project at Jabal Sukari, lies southwest of Marsa Alam in the Red Sea Governorate on Egypt’s east coast.

“As part of the project, extensive archaeological excavations, documentation, and restoration efforts were carried out to preserve the architectural elements uncovered at the site,” the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said.

“These elements were then relocated to a secure area three kilometres north of the original location, outside the active modern mining zone at Sukari Mine.”

Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, said the discoveries emphasised that the project aligns with the department’s ‘commitment to preserving Egypt’s rich heritage while supporting national development and economic initiatives’.

Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said: “Excavations revealed the remains of a 3,000-year-old gold processing complex, including a fully equipped facility for extracting gold from quartz veins.

“The site contained grinding and crushing stations, filtration and sedimentation basins, and ancient clay furnaces used for smelting gold.

“In addition, archaeologists uncovered the residential district of the gold miners, which included houses, workshops, temples, administrative buildings, and Ptolemaic Period bathhouses. Architectural remains from the Roman and Islamic Periods were also identified, further highlighting the site’s historical significance.”

The site found 628 broken pieces of pottery and stone, known as ostraca, inscribed in hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek scripts, as well as a collection of Ptolemaic bronze coins.

Other notable discoveries included a large number of terracotta figurines depicting human and animal forms from the Greco-Roman Period.

There was also an assortment of beads made from semi-precious stones, along with decorative items crafted from seashells.

Dr. Khaled emphasised the significance of this project in deepening understanding of the mining techniques used by the ancient Egyptians to extract gold from rock.

The discoveries also provide valuable insights into the social, religious, and economic lives of gold miners in industrial desert settlements throughout history.

The ancient mining complex has now been brought back to life through a new visitor centre featuring large display screens showcasing the excavation process and findings; exhibits of discovered artefacts, including statues, pottery, and mining tools; and informational panels detailing the historical significance of the region.

People baffled seeing Chinese influencer using ‘hundreds’ of phones to livestream herself at exact same time

It’s part of a huge business over there

Look, despite whatever jokes may get made, there’s no denying that successful influencers and content creators put in a graft. It might just be a very different kind of graft to what you’re used to.

They’ve got to be absolutely on it with filming, keeping on top of stats to ensure optimal engagement and edit stuff that people will actually want to watch on social media.

Maybe they even regularly put time aside to film live streams to flog stuff to us all.

And it seems some really are putting a graft in with that as people have been left baffled after seeing a Chinese streamer using ‘hundreds’ of phones to livestream herself.

Filming on them all at the exact same time, she appeared to be flogging fashion items to post on multiple platforms and presumably, accounts.

In clips, perfectly tiered rows of phones on tripods face the influencer, kit out with professional lighting and a number of crew.

She then seems to be trying on the different items of clothing as this live streaming form is said to be a huge market in China with e-commerce booming.

There are even events set up for these streams, with hundred of thousands of people drawn into watch as often celebrities or influencers will host them.

Now that's a setup (ViralPress)

Now that’s a setup (ViralPress)

It’s reported that live streaming generated over $150 billion (£118.5 billion) in the e-commerce market in 2022, per Euromonitor with it said Chinese shoppers are perhaps the most ‘mobile-oriented’ in the world.

And all of this seems to be reflected with the absolute mad set-up seen in the clip as the huge collection of phones allow for streams to target such a vast number of viewers.

Some users were baffled by the setup, asking: “Why all the phones?”

As another echoed: “I don’t get why so many phones are necessary.”

Over on Reddit, people suggested it’s likely that the phones are hooked up to ‘multiple accounts on multiple platforms with slightly different keywords and such’.

It'd take a hot minute to attempt to count how many phones there are (ViralPress)

Others also pointed out it’s likely about ‘quantity over quality’ for the streams while some said it looks like something very ‘dystopian’.

“It’s impressive she went this for,” another added. “It’s not easy to setup all of this, takes a lot of work and technical know how.”

And that reflects the real business in this whole live streaming world as general manager at AliExpress UK, Bonnie Zhao, told Vogue Business: “China’s embrace of live-streaming commerce has transformed shopping into an interactive and entertaining experience, driving sales through real-time engagement and influencer marketing.”

Woman has one of the most recognisable voices of all time but no one knows who she is

Woman has one of the most recognisable voices of all time but no one knows who she is

You may not know the name Susan Bennett, but we can bet you’ve heard her iconic voice

Since its launch in 2011, Apple’s voice-activated digital assistant Siri has grown to be an essential tool for an estimated 500 million users worldwide.

Many use the intelligent feature to call friends, scribe messages while driving, and even make them laugh on down days.

Now, if we say the name Susan Bennett, do you know what her connection to Siri is?

No, she’s not the creator—that’s Stanford Research Institute cohorts Adam Cheyer, Dag Kittlaus, and Tom Gruber, who sold the technology to Steve Jobs at Apple in 2010.

Instead, Bennett is actually the person who provided an American female voice for Siri when it was introduced on the iPhone 4S.

However, it actually took her two years to admit to being the woman behind Siri—but why?

Well, during an appearance on CNN, Bennett revealed the original recordings were done as ‘text to speech voices’ for a company called ScanSoft in July 2005.

Instead of being tasked to say common phrases like ‘Thanks for calling’ and ‘Please dial one’, the gig required her to utter phrases that hit various vowel and consonant combinations.

These included nonsense sentences like ‘Cow hoist in the tug hut today’ and ‘Say shift fresh issue today’, as well as various addresses and street names.

“I recorded from home four hours a day, five days a week for the entire month of July.

“The first hundred or so were fun and interesting, but it got pretty tiring after that,” she told Business Insider.

Bennett – who began her voiceover acting career by ‘accident’ – previously had credits in radio and television commercials as well as narration, but no experience in virtual assistant voicing.

“This was something very different,” she told the CNN broadcasters, admitting it was the first time in two years that she’d publicly shared she was the voice of Siri.

This was because she previously didn’t want to be defined or ‘pigeonholed’ by the career move.

Bennett only realised she was the voice of Siri six years after completing the task for ScanSoft (now Nuance Communications).

It’s understood she received an out-of-the-blue message from another voiceover actor, who claimed they were ‘playing around with a new iPhone’.

They’d heard Siri’s voice and wanted to know whether the AI assistant was their friend’s work.

“I had no idea what they were talking about,” the creative admitted.

“I went straight to Apple’s website to listen and knew immediately that it was my voice.”

According to Bennett, Apple never actually paid her for her voice.

This was because she originally did the gig through ScanSoft, who later reportedly sold the recordings to the tech giants.

Interestingly, she wasn’t the only person that this happened to.

Bennett said becoming the voice of Siri was a 'strange situation' (CNN)

John Briggs, who voiced the original British version of Siri, and Karen Jacobsen, the inaugural Australian Siri, also made recordings in 2005, only to wind up on Apple devices across the globe years later.

Despite claiming it was a ‘strange situation’, Bennett took the non-payment from Apple in stride.

Realising she didn’t have to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with the company, she decided to promote herself.

“I’ve been featured on TV shows, given a TEDx Talk, and spoken on the radio,” she confessed to Business Insider.

“It’s not something I ever would’ve seen myself doing 15 years ago, but it’s been really fun,” she added.

However, she claimed there is ‘no way to measure the downside or the work’ she may have lost as a result of the job.

“But I like to look at the positive side. It’s really been fun ‘being’ Siri.

“It’s really given me a lot of really wonderful opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise, so no complaints here.”

She added that if everyone who had an iPhone would send her a dollar, it would be ‘pretty good compensation’.

Bennett’s voice was used on the iPhone right up until the iOS 7 update was released on September 18, 2013.

Now, there are multiple Siri voices available, including four British and two Irish options.

Plane passenger has the last laugh after being asked to move from his window seat by angry dad

Plane passenger has the last laugh after being asked to move from his window seat by angry dad

Should you move seats if someone asked you on a plane?

A plane passenger has been praised after getting the last laugh for refusing to switch his window seat with an angry passenger wanting to sit next to his fully grown children.

It’s a situation that we’ve seen; people take to social media to complain about time and time again. Should you swap seats with someone else who wants your spot despite you paying for it?

There’s also been situations where people have stolen passenger’s seats hoping they wouldn’t come and take the option they had booked in advance.

Yep, plane etiquette is a big deal. As TikTok user Nick (@nickfromohio) found out on a recent flight home. Unfortunately for Nick, his desire to sit uninterrupted with his headphones in, lodged in his booked window seat for an early morning flight home, didn’t go to plan.

That was after the father of the two passengers sat next to him came over and demanded he move from the seat, even complaining to cabin crew that Nick was stealing the dad’s seat. But the creator had the final laugh, with the dad eventually escorted off of the plane for hitting another passenger. He explained the shocking exchange over on TikTok.

“If somebody asks you to switch seats with them on an airplane, just say no, because these people do not have good intentions,” Nick said.

“I get on board, take my window seat, pop in my AirPod, close my eyes, and I wake up to a tap on the shoulder. And I’m confused because I don’t know anybody on this flight? And I look at the person, and it’s a grown man, and he’s like, ‘hey, do you mind switching seats with me?’.

“My first thought is that he wants the window seat. I usually take the aisle seat because I’m pretty tall, but this was the only seat available. And so I’m actually curious; if he has the aisle seat, I’ll switch.”

The man didn’t have that seat, but was instead sat way further up the plane, saying he wanted to move back to be with his kids after explaining that they ‘weren’t able to sit together’.

Nick continues: “I’m like, ‘oh, like, where are your kids?’. And he goes, ‘why do you care? Do you want to switch seats with me or not?’. It’s too early to already start getting aggressive with somebody. I’m genuinely asking where his kids are, because if they’re on this flight, and my assumption is they’re young children, then they should be with him already on the flight, or literally right next to him, because he just boarded.

‘So I’m just like, ‘oh, like, sorry. I’ll probably just, like, stay in my seat. I don’t want to, like, switch around. I don’t want to go through that whole, like, hassle’.”

Fuming with Nick, the dad storms off while his then adult-aged children finally come and sit next to Nick. Weirdly, the dad comes back to speak to them where Nick says he was trying to make it obvious they were his kids.

After telling his children he didn’t want to switch once more, he says the dad said Nick ‘just wanted to be rude’.

“I am literally getting irritated at this point,” Nick said, I was like, ‘sir, I don’t want to switch seats with you. I don’t know how many times I need to tell you this, I’m not going to switch seats’.”

The man’s response? Tell a flight attendant walking by that attendant’s walking by that Nick was in fact in his seat. After going back and forth with the flight attendant, the dad returned to his seat. Only to get up one more time as the flight is ready for take off – a decision that would see him escorted off the plane.

“This man is back. He’s back by my seat, like yelling at me to get up and move out of his seat,” Nick says. “At this point, people next to him are telling him to sit down. And he shoves a man who tried to get up. At this point, the flight attendant has to come in and grab him, saying, ‘sir, we’re gonna have to escort you off of this fight for being physical with another passenger on the plane’.”

He’s taken off the plane, with his annoyed children following suit. The outcome for Nick? To take the aisle seat, which is what he originally wanted.

He said: “I took the aisle seat because they were gone, as that was the seat I wanted. So if somebody asked you to switch seats with them on an airplane, just say no, you bought the ticket. You deserve to sit int he seat of the ticket that you purchased. They should have planned better if they wanted it all sit together.”

Western country urged to 'stay vigilant' as mystery new illness kills more than 50 people in just hours of symptoms

Experts are hoping that key information will emerge in the coming days

Health experts have urged Aussies to be ‘vigilant’ amid an outbreak of a mystery new illness in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Scientists are frantically trying to identify what the illness is following the deaths of more than 50 people, who passed away just hours after their symptoms first arose.

Officials announced 419 infections have been recorded in Congo as of Monday (24 February), which is almost a month after the outbreak is believed to have first began.

It all started on 21 January this year, when three children in the village of Boloko reportedly ate a dead bat.

The youngsters died 48 hours later and had each developed symptoms of ‘hemorrhagic fever’, which are a group of illnesses caused by several distinct families of viruses.

According to the UK government, some of these can cause ‘mild illnesses’, however, others can cause ‘severe, life-threatening disease; some are high consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs)’.

It states: “The viruses depend on their animal hosts for survival, so they are usually restricted to the geographical area inhabited by those animals.

“The viruses are endemic in areas of Africa, South America and Asia, with some present in parts of Europe.”

Hemorrhagic fever symptoms are often linked to known deadly viruses, such as Ebola, Marburg and dengue – however, these have been ruled out after testing of more than a dozen samples.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) explained in the latest weekly bulletin that this raises ‘concerns about a severe infectious or toxic agent’ being the source of the mystery illness.

Dubbing the situation a ‘crisis’ and warning it poses a ‘significant public health threat’, the WHO explained sufferers have been experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, myalgia and body aches.

As well as this, those who have been infected might also have a runny nose, excessive sweating, a cough, neck stiffness vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps.

The reason experts are so concerned is that nearly half of the deaths occurred within just 48 hours of the onset of symptoms – something which Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital, said was ‘really worrying’.

Senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, Dr Michael Head, also warned that the potential of the illness spreading is a ‘real concern’.

He told Metro that although a pandemic is ‘very unlikely’, the world should be wary of the ‘possibility’ of a ‘wider spread around the DRC and across to other countries’.

As a result, health chiefs across the globe are on high alert just in case – including in Australia.

Experts such as Catherine Bennett, Professor of Epidemiology at Deakin University, have said that although those Down Under shouldn’t panic about the unknown illness right now, it’s important to remain cautious.

“I’m not nervous,” she told the Daily Mail regarding the current lack of information surrounding the illness. “It’s about being vigilant.

“I would expect we’d hear something in the next few days, particularly if it’s something that is an existing known pathogen. It’s a complex picture but they’re ruling things out.

“Sometimes it might be something that’s familiar but different enough where the current tests don’t work on it. They’re also looking at food or water poisoning. It might not be infectious, it might be an environmental source.”

In terms of the risk of it spreading, Professor Bennett said experts need to determine ‘how long people go from exposure to showing symptoms’ and when they become ‘infectious’.

“You can be in another country in hours and that might be someone who’s unfortunately caught something – not symptomatic yet – on a plane and that’s what we’re worried about in terms of spread,” she added.

Infectious diseases physician and microbiologist Peter Collignon also emphasised that the risk of the illness reaching Australia – or anywhere else for that matter – isn’t imminent.

“It’s a problem, but there’s a low probability it will transmit all around the world,” he said. “They should be able to work out what it is in the next few days because they’ve got enough material.”

Woman who sleeps with married men reveals major signs your husband is cheating on you

Woman who sleeps with married men reveals major signs your husband is cheating on you

The award-winning escort has outlined how affair signs change as men get older

Did you know that one in five British adults have admitted to having had an affair, while a third have at least thought about cheating on their partners?

Unbelievably, an investigative agency claimed in 2023 that that number could actually be even higher – so how do you catch a cheater?

According to Micki Daniels – a 29-year-old Australian content creator and award-winning escort who has admitted to sleeping with married men – there are some signs that your man may be practising infidelity.

For example, have you noticed your 30-year-old spouse causing arguments as an excuse to leave the house?

Or, have you recently realised you no longer know the passwords to your 20-something husband’s social media accounts?

If so, then they could be cheating on you, according to the expert.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Daniels has outlined how men in their forties are likely to exhibit different traits when having affairs compared to those in their sixties.

Buckle in – because there are about to be some major dating red flags being thrown around.

Rejecting phone calls and updating passwords: common signs that a man in his 20s could be cheating

According to Daniels, one of the things men in their twenties will do if they’re cheating on you is not to let you touch their phone.

Presumably, this is because you could accidentally stumble upon some incriminating messages, pictures, or even a secret social media profile.

If they don’t have a hidden Instagram, then they could be using their personal one to follow a string of ‘provocative’ accounts or adult entertainers, says Daniels.

Other signs include a point-blank refusal to answer any phone calls in front of you ‘just in case’ or updating their account passwords to ones you don’t know.

Picking fights and exiting the home could indicate a man in his thirties has other priorities

If you live with your significant other, then you may have noticed that they make a great deal of effort to leave the house after you’ve been embroiled in an argument.

According to Daniels, this is so that they can have a ‘time out’ and experience a ‘cooling off’ period away from their wives or girlfriends.

“I’ve seen it happen: They pick fights as an excuse not to talk to you or to leave the house for some ‘space’ when in reality they are spending time with their lover,” she claimed.

This becomes more prevalent when they have no interest in talking over whatever ‘issue’ had upset them, says Daniels.

“If they come back and try to sweep things under the rug, you should reconsider what they were really up to,” she warned.

A sudden interest in hygiene could expose a man in his forties

If your flame is messing around at 40 years old, then his hygiene routine could be a good indicator, says Daniels.

“If he is jumping in the shower as soon as he walks in the door, he could be trying to rinse off the smell of another woman,” she added.

Another ‘red flag’ sign to supposedly look out for is if he rushes off to the bathroom after engaging in sex with you.

Daniels continued: “One clear sign of a cheater is when there is zero aftercare or cuddling after sex. Instead he’s bolting to the shower to wash you off him. That’s a major red flag!

“Post-sex affection is linked to deepening connection between partners so if he’s prioritising a shower in lieu of aftercare perhaps he’s just having sex out of obligation.”

Frivolous spending and a dramatic sex drive change are red flags, according to the escort (Getty Stock Image)

Adventurous sex and a sudden appearance change: signs a man in his fifties could be cheating

The relationships expert claims that if your man is initiating sex more often and has a sudden desire to switch up pillow play then this could hint that some dastardly deeds are going on.

“If he’s sleeping with someone new, don’t be surprised if he suggests sex positions he’s never showed interest in before,” said Daniels.

“He may say he wants to incorporate porn or even toys to the bedroom when these activities were never previously on the table.”

Meanwhile, a man becoming noticeably insecure about ageing and/or opting to change up his look could indicate he’s being unfaithful, the self-styled ‘cheating veteran’ claims.

Splashing the cash in your sixties? That’s a red flag, apparently

According to Daniels, while young men are cautious with their spending, older men – especially those in their sixties – can forget to hide things from their spouses.

Therefore if you suddenly see your partner has charges for random hotel stays, expensive restaurants and other activities that aren’t on their everyday curriculum, then this could mean they’re cheating on you.

This titbit comes from experience, with the escort claiming her married clients tend to put through transactions to her as ‘bills’ so that their wives don’t question them.

The more you know, huh?

This was followed by her gig on the Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete, spanning from 1994 until 1996 and securing her spot as a promising child star.

The White Lotus alumni starred together in the second outing of Mike White’s anthology series

The White Lotus, HBO Max’s premiere satirical comedy-drama series, is finally back on our screens, this time starring Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood, Carrie Coon and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son, Patrick.

A creepy incest storyline has already been explored and one actor has explained how they experienced a ‘career first’ during an age-gap sex scene.

The third season of Mike White’s deliciously dark TV programme, set in Ko Samui, Thailand, follows on from its explosive second season in Sicily.

In The White Lotus’ sophomore outing, Aubrey Plaza, 40, played employment lawyer Harper Spiller, the wife of Ethan (played by Will Sharpe), who is on holiday with her husband’s college friend, Cameron Sullivan (Theo James) and his spouse Daphne (Meghann Fahy).

We won’t spoil anything major but there’s some stifling sexual tension between Harper and Cameron, who at one point even drops his trousers in front of her.

The moment happens in the season two premiere when Cameron, whose luggage never arrived at the swanky establishment, arrives at Harper’s hotel room so that he may borrow a pair of her hubby’s swimming shorts.

Harper initially thinks Cameron is going to get changed in another room, so is in for quite a shock when he decides to drop his kegs and get fully naked in front of her.

In a 2022 interview, James, 40, questioned whether his character whipping off his pants in front of his friend’s wife was ‘easy breezy’ or a calculated’ move.

“On the day, we had to figure out what that was because the original derivation of it, it’s kind of full-frontal, if you know what I mean,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“We shot that and it felt too much, too aggressive. What we came to is a bit more opaque, and that’s exactly what Mike does so well. You’re never sure a hundred percent of the characters’ intentions.”

It was later revealed that the changing scene saw James donning a prosthetic penis—a decision made so that White Lotus viewers weren’t distracted.

The Gentlemen star told The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon viewers: “I said, ‘Honestly, I just wanted it not to be distracting. It needs to be ‘Regular Joe’.

“Because the scene, you know, it’s not about the pee-pee, it’s about power play and sex.”

He went on to joke that the plastic penis was so large it had been modelled on that of a donkey remarking how ‘ginormous’ it was.

Due to the buzz around the size of James’ large plastic penis, Plaza was asked to give her two cents on the scene during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.

She claimed that James ‘wanted to have the biggest’ penis possible, contradicting remarks he made about it being a ‘Regular Joe’.

“He wanted to have the biggest one or whatever. He wanted to have the big one and he got it,” she announced.

“Guys are so weird with that stuff.”

Neither Plaza nor James is in the third season of The White Lotus, due to it being an anthology series.

However, during the February 16 premiere of the third season, Jon Gries’ Greg made a surprise return.

Previously, he met and married Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge) in season one of the series, and it was revealed in Sicily that he had actually been conning her.

How will his season three appearance go? Only time will tell.

New episodes of The White Lotus 3 drop on NOW in the UK every Monday.
