Following the film’s success, his acting career soared, eventually earning him an Academy Award earlier this year for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal in Oppenheimer.
That vision has now become a reality with the release of the trailer for 28 Years Later, which dropped on December 10.
The announcement confirmed that Alex Garland and Danny Boyle, the creative minds behind the original film, co-wrote the screenplay, with Boyle returning to the director’s chair.
A teaser poster for the film, unveiled by Sony Pictures on Instagram on December 6, featured the chilling tagline, “time didn’t heal anything.”
However, if the trailer for 28 Years Later is any indication, things didn’t turn out as optimistically for Jim as fans had hoped.
While Murphy reprises his role, the new cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, suggesting Jim’s fate may have taken a darker turn, leaving no room for a “live and well” version of his character.
Another added: “The one second shot of Cillian Murphy is giving me a bone deep sense of terror,”
Another remarked: “It’s almost like a greatest hits collection of the last two movies.” and “Zombies in the church, the wave coming over the hill, the tunnel fight in the dark.”
Ralph Fiennes also revealed that the new film is part of a trilogy, with two installments—28 Years Later and 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple—already filmed.
The release date for 28 Years Later has been set for June 20, 2025, and fans are already counting down the days.
