Snoop Dogg addresses criticism following ‘homophobic’ comment about children’s movie

Snoop said a same-sex relationship in a Pixar film left him ‘scared to go to the movies’

Snoop Dogg has responded after facing backlash over a ‘homophobic’ comment he made during a podcast appearance.

It all started when the 53-year-old rapper took one of his grandsons to the movies to watch Lightyear, a prequel to the beloved Toy Story films.

In the Pixar movie, one of the main characters has two moms in a same-sex relationship.

During an interview on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop claimed he was ‘scared to go to the movies’ after he recalled his grandson asking questions about the relationship.

He said: “They’re putting it everywhere […] They’re like, ‘She had a baby – with another woman’. Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’

“I didn’t come in for this sh*t. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”

The rapper then went on to claim he was ‘scared to go to the movies’ as a result of the situation, saying: “Y’all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for.”

After a clip of the interview was shared on Reddit, people were quick to accuse him of being homophobic.

One user said the comments were ‘blatantly [sic] homophobic of Snoop’, as another wrote: “It’s only hard to explain if you’re homophobic and trying to hide the existence of gay people to your children.”

Now, the 16-time Grammy winner has since taken to social media to address the criticism.

After Hollywood Unlocked reposted a video of media personality TS Madison discussing the backlash the rapper had received on Instagram, Snoop took to the comments to explain he was just ‘caught off guard’ and asked the LGBTQ+ community to ‘teach me how to learn.’

He wrote: “I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons. All my gay friends [know] what’s up, they been calling me with love.

“My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”

Lightyear screenwriter Lauren Gunderson previously defended her decision to include a same-sex relationship in the film.

“I’m proud of it. To infinity. Love is love,” she wrote on Instagram. “I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of sh*t for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists.”
