Martina Navratilova expressed her support for JK Rowling after the author shared an emotional message reflecting on her fight to protect women’s “rights and boundaries.” Rowling revisited her 2019 support for Maya Forstater and voiced gratitude for the women who stood by her despite the backlash she endured.
In 2019, Maya Forstater, a UK researcher, lost her job after stating that individuals cannot change their biological sex. Her case sparked significant debate over free speech and gender identity. At the time, Harry Potter author Rowling voiced her support for Forstater on X.
“Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya #ThisIsNotADrill” Rowling wrote.
On December 18, 2024, five years after her message of support for Forstater, Rowling expressed her regret for not speaking up sooner. She wrote:
“To every girl and woman who’s paid a heavy price for fighting to retain their rights and boundaries, to every person striving to halt an appalling medical experiment on minors, I salute you. We will win.”
An X user expressed admiration for the $1 billion-worth author, attributing significant progress in mainstream discussions about women’s rights and boundaries to her courage.
In response, Rowling expressed deep gratitude, writing:
“Women like you have been everything to me in the past five years. For every death threat, fifty women sending me love and strength. I’ll never forget it x”
Martina Navratilova, an advocate for female-based sex spaces, reposted the conversation and backed the author. She wrote:
“👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏🏼”

Martina Navratilova and J.K. Rowling have aligned on the same side of the transgender debate. The tennis icon advocates for the exclusion of transgender athletes from women’s sports and the protection of women-only spaces, a stance shared by the Harry Potter author. Both have faced criticism for their views, but they consistently support each other.
Recently, an X account quoted a famous line from Harry Potter and thanked Rowling:
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends”
It was originally spoken by Albus Dumbledore in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. He says it to Neville Longbottom after Neville stood up to his friends, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, acknowledging Neville’s bravery.
Navratilova reposted it, writing:
“Thank you indeed!!!”
In July, the two met for the first time at ‘The Lesbian Project’ event, where Navratilova called Rowling a “Queen.”
