Russia sees ‘no grounds for negotiations’ with Ukraine, Putin spokesperson says

LONDON — Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the Izvestia newspaper in an interview published Wednesday that Russia sees “no grounds for negotiations yet” to end Moscow’s war on Ukraine.

President-elect Donald Trump’s imminent return to the White House has revived speculation as to a possible deal to end Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor, which by the time Trump takes office again will be nearly three years old.

Russia still occupies around 20% of Ukraine and claims to have annexed four entire regions — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia — though it only partially occupies the areas it claims.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his top officials have repeatedly said that Kyiv and its Western partners must accept the “new territorial realities” of Russian occupation, including of Crimea which was annexed in 2014.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov listens to Russian President Vladimir Putin before a signing ceremony at the Akorda presidential residence in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Nov. 27, 2024.

Both Moscow and Kyiv have raised the prospect of renewed peace talks in recent weeks, though the two sides still appear far apart on key issues. Among them are the fate of the partially- or fully-occupied Ukrainian regions and Kyiv’s ambition to join NATO.

Peskov told Izvestia that “many countries have declared the readiness to host” possible peace talks, among them Qatar.

“Indeed, the emirate has been a very active mediator in various areas, it has been quite effective,” he added. “Besides, our bilateral relations with Qatar have been developing perfectly. We are grateful to all states, among them Qatar, for their goodwill.”

Russian and Ukrainian leaders are spending the last months of President Joe Biden’s time in office trying to gain leverage on the military and diplomatic fronts.

Former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson announced on Wednesday that he had returned to Russia to interview Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Carlson interviewed Putin in February and has been a fierce critic of the Biden administration’s support for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has spent the last week receiving high-level allied visits in Kyiv. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Council President Antonio Costa and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas all travelled to the Ukrainian capital, with Scholz pledging $680 million in new military aid.

The U.S. also announced this week its latest tranche of military support worth some $750 million. Zelenskyy said such support is “exactly what we need.”

Ukrainian forces need “significant reinforcement, particularly through weapons from our partners,” the president said on Tuesday, amid difficult battlefield conditions.

In this photo taken from video released by the Russian Defense Ministry on Dec. 3, 2024, a “Grad” multiple rocket launcher fires toward Ukrainian positions in Russia’s Kursk region.

Russian forces continue to advance in the east of Ukraine, while pressing their efforts to eject Ukrainian troops from Russia’s western Kursk region where Kyiv’s forces took up positions in a surprise August offensive.

Meanwhile, both sides continue long-range drone and missile attacks. Russia’s strikes are focused on Ukraine’s energy network, while Kyiv continues to target military sites and oil infrastructure facilities.

On Wednesday, Ukraine’s air force reported 28 Russia drones launched into the country overnight, of which 22 were shot down and three went off course. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces shot down 35 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Peace talk speculation looks set to continue through to Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Oleksandr Merezhko — a member of parliament representing Zelenskyy’s party and the chair of the body’s foreign affairs committee — told ABC News it is possible that Russia may soften its inflexible negotiating position in 2025.

“Putin is afraid of Trump and considers him to be unpredictable and stronger than Biden,” said Merezhko, who last month nominated the president-elect for next year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

“At the moment, Putin is in a hurry to grab as much territory as he can and to get the Kursk region back,” Merezhko said. “He is trying to improve his position before Trump coming to power and before the possible negotiations.”

Martin debunked the concept of a credit score and what actually contributes to a lender approving a loan

Martin Lewis has delved into credit scores on a recent episode of his money show, explaining why they ‘aren’t real’.

During ITV’s Martin Lewis Money Show Live on Tuesday (3 December), Martin explained what a credit score actually is and how to boost your chances of being accepted for a loan.

“What is the most important factor in determining your credit score?” One audience member asked, which prompted Martin to debunk the concept of a credit score and what actually contributes to a lender approving a loan.

“You don’t have a credit score. You don’t have one,” he said.

“There is no single number that dictates if a lender will accept you.

“Each individual lender scores you differently based on it own wish list – not just about risk but what is profitable as a customer.

“The credit reference agencies market a credit scoring tool but it is just their idea, a rough example, of how a typical lender may look at you.

“It isn’t rock solid, it isn’t official.”

Essentially, Martin explained that a credit score is basically an estimation of how lenders view your financial profile.

Instead of stressing about slight changes in your credit score, it’s best to focus on measures that make you more favourable to lenders.

Use a debt ratio

Martin explained that lenders look at how much debt you have as a percentage of your annual income.

As an example, Martin explained: “Say you’ve only got a £10,000 credit card, you earn £40,000 – that is a 25 per cent debt ratio. Lower is better.”

To boost this, you’ll need to reduce debt or boost your income.

Credit utilisation

Lenders also look at credit utilisation, which is an assessment of how much credit you’re using.

For example, if you have a £1,000 credit limit and you’re £100 in debt, you have a 10 per cent credit utilisation.

This can be improved by using less of your overdraft or surprisingly, increasing your credit.

Disposable income

Martin explained that if you’re about to apply for a mortgage, for example, you should be ‘going frugal’ and trying to increase your disposable income – aka the money you have left once bills have been paid.

This is because lenders actually look at how much money you have left in your account via statements.

However, for credit cards and loans, lenders don’t have access to your statements, so they look at what a person in your circumstances would likely do, rather than assessing your accounts.

“The amount you earn and the amount of debt you have is factored in, so if you could earn more and reduce your debt, it could help on the disposable income,” said Martin.

Maintaining your credit file

Finally, Martin explained that making sure your credit file is up to date and correct is important.

For example, check for any mistakes or incorrect addresses as these can impact your file.

“I want you to go through these reports, line by line, even small errors can mean rejection,” Martin said.

“If you’ve got an old mobile phone contract that’s closed, but it’s linked to the wrong address, that could kibosh a mortgage deal.”

Martin Lewis explains how to ensure you get accepted for a mortgage

The money expert has offered his advice on how to be accepted for a mortgage

Getting accepted for a mortgage can be extremely difficult for several factors.

But do not fear; money expert Martin Lewis is here to advise you on how to ensure you’ll get accepted for a mortgage.

The money-saving expert was on The Martin Lewis Money Show Live on ITV last night, where he also explained what to do if your landlord raises your rent.

Speaking about mortgage rates and renters’ tips with Robert Gardner, the chief economist at Nationwide, Lewis explained that mortgage rates have finally started to fall – which sounds like a positive sign.

After answering questions about what first-time buyers should be, he explained how the mortgage process works.

Martin Lewis has shared advice on how you can ensure to be accepted for mortgages.

Martin explained that lenders always conduct credit checks when reviewing applications, so ensure that you have a high score.

But how can you do this?

Firstly, he says to check your credit report with the three credit agencies, Equifax, Experian, and Transunion, for potential pitfalls.

However, you must be careful while checking this line-by-line to ensure you don’t miss any avoidable mistakes.

Lewis said: “I know people who have not got a mortgage because of an old mobile phone that was linked to the wrong address,” adding that a case like that could be fraudulent.

I think we’ve all been there: forgetting to change our address for certain things, so that’s easy to miss!

Another key factor is making sure not to complete all payments and pay off your cards every month to show that you can pay large amounts off regularly and on time.

There are a number of things that you can do to ensure that your credit score stays high.

Getty Stock Photos

Martin also recommends that first-time buyers conduct an ‘affordability stress test’, which involves adding a rate to see if you could afford a more expensive mortgage than the one you’re currently eyeing.

Another important thing is to be more vigilant with your spending in the lead-up to the application because you will need to supply evidence of income, bills and spending habits.

So, it might be best to hold off on Uber Eats and Deliveroo for a bit. I know it’s tough, but we’ll all have to do it one day.

And finally, he recommends hiring a mortgage broker if you can, especially if you are ‘self-employed, live above a shop or have cladding’.

However, he suggests holding off payment to the broker until the deal has come through.

It’s a lot, but why not if it can get you closer to your first home?

Rhod Gilbert has issued a warning to others after he experienced persistent symptoms

Rhod Gilbert has issued a warning to others after the everyday symptoms he was experiencing turned out to be stage four cancer.

In 2022, Gilbert, 56, was diagnosed with stage four head and neck cancer after suffering from persistent symptoms.

Head and neck cancer is relatively uncommon, with over 12,400 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year, according to the NHS.

The term refers to cancers within different areas of the head and neck, including the mouth, voice box, nose, throat, salivary glands and sinuses.

Oesophageal (gullet) cancer, thyroid cancer, brain tumours and eye cancer are generally not classified as a head and neck cancers.

Gilbert first started experiencing symptoms similar to a common cold, including a sore throat, cough and difficulties swallowing.

At the time, tests to try and understand what was happening proved to be inconclusive, but it was when the comedian noticed a lump on his neck, that doctors conducted a biopsy and the cancer was diagnosed.

“Luckily that lump popped up,” he told the Mirror.

“If that lump hadn’t have popped up, I don’t know what would’ve happened, I would dread to think.”

Gilbert has now had the all-clear following treatment at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.

He’s since issued a warning to others to make sure they get checked if they have any persistent and unusual symptoms.

“I think that one of the problems we’ve got is some cancers don’t have any symptoms. With some of them, the symptoms could well be something else and they’re more likely to be something else,” he said.

“If you’ve got a cough, that doesn’t mean you’ve got cancer, it means you’ve got a cough or you’ve got Covid or whatever, it could be anything.

“The problem with coughs as well, you hear about this 100-day cough, but I think the general rule is if anything persists and doesn’t go away, if it won’t go away after a few weeks, then get it checked out.

“Don’t panic and make sure you can do anything you can to get it checked out.”

Gilbert explained his treatment had been ‘wonderful’ and he now has checks every six months.

Asteroid hits Earth’s atmosphere with spectacular fireball – and there’s a bigger one on the way

The asteroid whizzed above the skies in Russia’s Siberia region and dispite its tiny size of 27 inches managed to put on a dazzling display as it burned up in the atmosphere

The asteroid measure about 27 inches across, according to the European Space Agency.

An asteroid lit up the sky as it turned into a dazzling fireball upon hitting Earth’s atmosphere on Wednesday with space boffins noting a larger one is on its way.

Residents in the remote Sakha region in Russia’s Siberian tundra spotted the fireball as it whizzed across the sky in the early hours of this morning. The European Space Agency (ESA) said the asteroid measures about 27 inches across and burned up in contact with Earth’s atmosphere at about 1.15am (4.15pm Tuesday, UK time).

Sakha region officials said they had been alerted about the asteroid but that no reports of damage had been made. “Residents of Olekminsk and Lensk districts were able to observe in the night a tail similar to a comet and a flash,” the Sakha Republic Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

The asteroid put on a dazzling display as it burned up in the atmoshere.

The ESA said in a post shared on X/Twitter today: “Asteroid #COWEPC5 (temporary designation) entered Earth’s atmosphere at 16:15 (4:45pm) UTC/17:15 (5:15pm) CET, creating a fireball over Yakutia witnessed by people in the region. The object was discovered roughly 12 hours ago and is thought to have been around 70 cm across. Thanks to observations from astronomers around the world, our alert system was able to predict this impact to within +/- 10 seconds.”

Clips of the fireball were widely shared on social media platforms such as X/Twitter. The Mirror found several of the videos shared online had been viewed by tens of thousands of people altogether.

Residents filmed the asteroid as it raced across the sky.

Several videos, taken from different parts of the Siberian republic showed the moment the asteroid shot across the sky, turning the horizon brilliant shades of blue. Moments later the same space rock burned up a glowing red before disappearing altogether.

The small asteroid was first detected by a team at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona and was the fourth space rock to enter Earth’s atmosphere this year. Physicist Richard Moissl head of the Planetary Defence Office of the ESA previously said in a X/Twitter post: “Incoming. The 12th-ever imminent impactor discovered before atmospheric entry is on its way to cause a harmless meteor in about 7 hours from now over Siberia. With an estimated size of 70cm diameter. It will cause a nice bright fireball.”

According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a relatively large asteroid, given the name 2020XR, will pass by Earth today. The asteroid is several times larger that the tiny fireball that burned up over Russia and is believed to measure about 1,200 feet in diameter.

It will safely pass by the Earth at a distance of about 1.37 million miles. A NASA spokesperson previously said of the asteroid: “The likelihood of an impact from 2020 XR is virtually zero. But it still qualifies as a ‘potentially hazardous asteroid’ due to its proximity.”

Street Outlaws star Lizzy Musi dies with her family by her side after a year-long battle with stage 4 breast cancer

A street racer named Lizzy Musi has died after being told she had stage-four breast cancer, according to her father.

Mooresville, North Carolina’s Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings star told everyone about her diagnosis last year, which meant she had to leave the show.

In a Facebook post, Musi’s famous dad Pat said, “Surrounded by her family and in the comfort of her own home, Lizzy was called to heaven at 11:25 pm tonight.”

“Thank you for all your prayers and help during her illness.

At this point, the family would like to be left alone to deal with their grief and make plans.

“We will give an update as soon as we have information to share.”

Women and girls looked up to the racer after she won three straight episodes of Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings in 2019.

With a time of 3.802 seconds, she was also the first woman to go faster than 200 mph in eighth-mile doorslammer racing.

Back in July 2014, Lizzy Musi made more history when she won a Pro Nitrous national event at the Professional Drag Racers Association US Drags. She was the first woman to do so.

A 33-year-old racer who was honest about having stage 4 triple-negative breast cancer, which is one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer, has received a lot of praise.

Musi was still hopeful about her health, even though the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and liver.

She told everyone in Germany last month that she had “great news” while she was getting treatment for cancer.

Even though the driver didn’t say more, she had already said that she was going to the Medias Klinikum treatment center in Burghausen, Germany.

Last month, Lizzy told Drag Illustrated, “I’ve pretty much tried everything here in the US, and I’ve looked into the doctor and treatment in Germany that can separate my liver and treat it.”

One fan wrote under Pat’s post, which was shared on Musi’s Facebook page, “This just hurts my heart.”

“She gave young girls a lot to think about. It was fun to watch her race.”

“One of the best female racers,” said someone else.

“Younger people were so inspired by how positive and happy she was.” This is so unbelievable.

We’re sorry for her family’s loss. Run fast, Lizzy, up in heaven.”

LOVER OF MY LIFE
This year, Musi publicly thanked her boyfriend Jeffrey Earnhardt, who is the grandson of famous Nascar driver Dale Earnhardt, for always being there for her.

“This guy right here has supported me like no other from sleepless ER nights and dealing with my health to cheering me on at my races,” Musi wrote on the app.

“He did insanely well when I got to see him play this past weekend after a long off-season. @jearnhardt1 #thankful #unique #howloveshouldfeel”

They started going out together after she broke up with racecar driver Kyle Kelley in late 2023.

A touching Facebook post from January by Musi revealed some details about her relationship with Earnhardt.

“I found a man when I least expected it, on top of going through the worst time in my life… it didn’t phase him and he has loved me unconditionally since,” said she.

“No hair…disease or not, he’s seen me at my worst…” Getting calls telling me how strong and beautiful I am; talking on FaceTime without my wig on and still getting compliments… I’m immensely grateful for you, Jeffrey Earnhardt.

Millions of people on Instagram have called Earnhardt their “soulmate” and thanked him for “loving her the way she deserved” until the end.

People have sent Earnhardt their condolences, but she hasn’t said anything public about her death yet.

He gave an update on Musi’s return to racing at the end of April, after she raced at Virginia Motorsport Park in her ’69 Camaro named Bonnie.

According to her partner, she and the team were “firing on all cylinders.”

FREAK OUT
Musi died just two months after Nathan Schaldach, better known as Cali Nate, who also played Nathan on Street Outlaws.

The accident that killed Nate happened in southwest Texas on April 6.

He crashed his car while racing in Eagle Pass, which is about two hours west of San Antonio.

The racer died from his injuries even though he was taken to the hospital.

The news was confirmed by his girlfriend Courtney Paulshock, who wrote a sad post on Facebook about how she felt “shattered” after losing “her person.”

Musi praised her coworker and called him a “hell of a guy.”

The actress wrote on Instagram, “Hard to wrap my mind around this one.”

“We all know what the risk is when we get in these cars.”

When we filmed the street shows in Vegas and Cali, I got to race with Nate.

“Trustworthy street racer and great guy!” Say “Godspeed”

When asked about Nate and Paulshock’s relationship, Musi asked his fans to pray for his girlfriend who was hurting.

“Please keep my good friend @c_paulshockphotography in your thoughts and prayers!” She went on.

“I know how deeply they loved each other and how they couldn’t be apart.” This really hurts my feelings.”

Eminem’s mum released heartbreaking song to her son saying ‘I did the best I could’

Debbie Nelson and Eminem had a very troubled relationship

Eminem’s mother Debbie Nelson once released a song to her famous song in which she heartbreakingly said she ‘did the best she could’.

Debbie died on Monday (2 December) at the age of 69, with representatives of Eminem confirming the passing of his mum. Her cause of death was complications of lung cancer.

Mother to Eminem – real name Marshall Mathers – and his half-brother Nate Mathers, the two had a tumultuous relationship with their mum.

The beef got that bad that Eminem wrote a 2002 diss track about Debbie.

Debbie Nelson, mum to Eminem, has died (Mark Weiss/Getty Images)

song he doesn’t perform live any more, ‘Cleanin’ Out My Closet’ was a story of his historical relationship with his mother, describing his childhood in a home where he witnessed drug taking and abuse.

Eminem called Debbie a ‘selfish b***h’ who he saw ‘poppin’ prescription pills in the kitchen’. And it wasn’t the only song in which he put drug use accusations towards his mum, with song ‘My Mom’ being about the very same issue.

Suing Eminem for $10 million (£7.7m) and settling for $25,000 (£19,400), Debbie had accused her son of defamation and slander.

He doesn’t perform the song any more and even issued an apology on song ‘Headlights’, released on the 2013 album The Marshall Mathers LP 2. This song saw Eminem speak about a number of alleged incidents from his life with his mum, which included getting kicked out of the house on Christmas Eve, fighting, and his younger brother Nate being sent to foster care.

“But ma, I forgive you, so does Nathan yo. All you did, all you said, you did your best to raise us both,” Eminem raps in the apology song. “Foster care, that cross you bare, few may be as heavy as yours. But I love you Debbie Mathers, oh what a tangled web we have.”

Some 13 years before the release of ‘Headlights’, Debbie herself released her own song directed to her firstborn son.

Entitled ‘Dear Marshall’, the song was an apology to Eminem; one that carries more heartbreak following her passing.

“Dear Marshall, I just wanted to start by saying I still love you,” Debbie says as the song begins.

In the song, Debbie says that her 72 hour labour process to give birth to Marshall was ‘worth every minute of it when I looked in to those big blue eyes’.

“This was the first time I ever felt true love in my whole life,” she declared.

Later on in the song, Debbie says: “Marshall, I did the best I could. I went without so you could have.”

But there is a reality check in there, Debbie speaks about, saying she created a ‘spoilt and angry young man’ after ‘giving him everything and never questioning anything you did as you were perfect in my eyes’.

Despite the back and forth, the two clearly had some form of reconciliation through the apology song ‘Headlights’.

After Eminem was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Debbie took to X (then Twitter) to congratulate her son.

“I love you very much. I knew you’d get there,” she wrote. “It’s been a long ride. I’m very, very proud of you.”

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeoh has declared an emergency martial law, adding how the measure was needed to keep the nation protected from communist forces.

This includes enemies he called were coming from North Korea and anti-state actions inside his own country.

‘I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from great threats of communists in North Korea so that all despicable individuals can be removed. They are putting the country’s freedom and happiness at threat. It is also impacting our free constitutional order’- he added during his TV address today.
He further added how the country’s opposition is trying hard to control the parliament and hamstring the government via anti-state activities before asking his citizens to please believe in him.
He also hoped that they could tolerate some inconveniences. He mentioned that there are no regrets for the livelihoods of people.
Now, the capital city is seeing giant tanks rolling through the city while panic and fear grip the country. Many forces were seen storming the parliament after loud slogans were heard from a distance.

Inside Bill Gates’ Parenting Style – Education, Responsibility, and the Power of Failure

Inside Bill Gates’ Parenting Style - Education, Responsibility, and the Power of Failure

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s richest individuals, has long been celebrated for his brilliance and philanthropy. However, beyond his achievements in technology and global health, Gates is equally admired for his role as a dedicated father. Despite his immense wealth, Gates emphasizes that education is the greatest gift he can provide for his children. For him, cultivating curiosity, discipline, and a thirst for knowledge are far more valuable than material inheritance.

Gates has been vocal about his belief that strong educational foundations enable individuals to succeed in life. His three children—Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe—are a testament to this philosophy, having grown up in an environment where learning and personal growth were consistently prioritized.

Inside Bill Gates’ Parenting Style - Education, Responsibility, and the Power of Failure

From a young age, Gates encouraged his children to develop a genuine love for learning. He believes that education should empower critical thinking and creativity, qualities he views as essential for success in any field. Gates has famously said that the goal of education is not just to pass exams but to prepare children for the challenges of the real world.

Instead of pampering his children with luxury, Gates made it a point to emphasize values like hard work, discipline, and intellectual curiosity. He once revealed that his children didn’t own smartphones until they were teenagers, ensuring that they remained focused on academics and personal development rather than distractions from social media or gaming.

Real-Life Examples of His Commitment to His Children’s Education

Encouraging Academic Pursuits

Gates ensured that his children had access to top-tier educational institutions. For instance, his eldest daughter, Jennifer Gates, graduated from Stanford University, one of the most prestigious schools in the United States. Jennifer then went on to study medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, a field that requires immense dedication and intellect.

His son Rory, while more private, is known for excelling academically and being deeply interested in issues related to law and public policy, areas where intellectual rigor is paramount. Similarly, Phoebe, the youngest, is pursuing an education in the arts, demonstrating that Gates supports their diverse interests while maintaining high standards of academic excellence.

Focus on Lifelong Learning

Gates himself is an advocate of lifelong learning, and he instills this in his children by example. Known for his voracious reading habits, Gates reportedly shares his favorite books with his children and encourages them to explore a wide range of subjects. His personal library is not just a testament to his intellectual curiosity but also a resource for his family to delve deeper into history, science, and global issues.

Limiting Inheritance to Promote Responsibility

Gates’ decision to leave the bulk of his fortune to charity rather than to his children is a testament to his focus on education and self-reliance. He has publicly stated that each child will receive a modest inheritance compared to his vast wealth, ensuring they are motivated to achieve their goals through education and hard work. This decision underscores his belief that intellectual and personal growth far outweigh financial dependence.

Education Beyond the Classroom

Bill Gates has always championed the idea that education is not confined to formal schooling. He encourages his children to gain real-world experiences and develop skills outside traditional academic environments. This includes learning about philanthropy and global challenges through the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

By involving his children in philanthropic projects, Gates provides them with a broader perspective on global inequalities and the importance of giving back. For example, Jennifer Gates has often spoken about how her parents’ philanthropic work inspired her to pursue a career in medicine, with the aim of making a positive impact on society.

Praise for Gates’ Approach to Parenting

Bill Gates’ parenting philosophy has been widely lauded for its emphasis on education and moral responsibility. Experts in child development often point to Gates as an example of a parent who balances high expectations with unwavering support. By fostering an environment that values learning and discipline, Gates ensures that his children have the tools to succeed on their own merits.

Many also admire Gates’ ability to teach humility and responsibility despite his immense wealth. Unlike many affluent families where children are often shielded from life’s challenges, Gates ensures his children understand the value of hard work and persistence, instilling qualities that will serve them well in any endeavor.

A Legacy of Learning

Bill Gates’ focus on his children’s education reflects his belief that knowledge is the most powerful inheritance. By emphasizing the importance of academics, critical thinking, and personal growth, he has set a high standard for what it means to be a supportive and forward-thinking parent.

Through his actions, Gates has not only provided his children with the best possible opportunities but also inspired millions of parents worldwide to prioritize education. For Gates, the ultimate measure of success is not wealth but the ability to raise independent, educated, and compassionate individuals who are ready to make meaningful contributions to the world.

North Korea, Russia and China watch on as crisis unfolds in key US ally South Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet in Russia’s Far East in September 2023.
A night of political upheaval in South Korea has upended stability in a key democratic US ally – sending shock waves through the region and Washington at a moment of acute global tension.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on Tuesday night in a surprise decree that was reversed hours later following overwhelming opposition across the political spectrum for what was widely seen as a breach of the country’s vibrant democracy.

The move, which Yoon claimed was necessary to “save the country against anti-state forces” trying to destroy the “constitutional order of liberal democracy,” was met by protests in Seoul and mounting calls for the president’s resignation.

The stunning development appeared to catch Washington off guard. That’s an unnerving reality for the United States military, which has nearly 30,000 troops and its largest overseas base in South Korea, serving as a check against a belligerent North Korea and counterweight to an aggressive China in a strategically critical region.

The turmoil has the potential for significant ramifications at a moment of deepening geopolitical fault lines in Asia, where both North Korea and China are strengthening their alignment with Russia as it wages war on Ukraine.

Leaders in Pyongyang, Beijing and Moscow are likely watching the developments in Seoul with an eye to its potential to undermine a key bastion of US power in the region – and all eyes are now on North Korea, which may be keen to use the political chaos to its advantage.

‘Major ramifications’

The US-South Korea alliance has long been seen by both countries as a cornerstone of peace in the region, where North Korea continues to threaten South Korea and the US with its illegal weapons program.

That threat has only become more acute as North Korea has ramped up its partnership with Russia, sending ammunition, missiles, and soldiers, intelligence officials say, to aid Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

“Any instability in South Korea has major ramifications for our Indo-Pacific policies,” retired US Col. Cedric Leighton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, pointing to how US troops in the country are geared for a “fight tonight” scenario against North Korea. “The less stability there is in South Korea the worse it gets for us to fulfill our policy goals.”

US President Joe Biden has worked assiduously during his time in office to bolster the US partnership with South Korea, meeting Yoon multiple times, referring to the South Korean leader as a “great friend,” and earlier this year passing his “Summit for Democracy” to Yoon to host in South Korea.

President Joe Biden hosts his South Korean counterpart for a state dinner at the White House during Yoon Suk Yeol’s April 2023 visit to the US.

Biden’s efforts also included a landmark 2023 summit at Camp David with Japan and South Korea, where the US president navigated around historic mistrust between the two US allies to broker enhanced trilateral coordination.

A US National Security Council spokesperson expressed “relief” after Yoon reversed course on what the spokesperson described as his “concerning declaration,” adding that “democracy is at the foundation” of the US-South Korea alliance.

Despite US assurances that the alliance remains “ironclad,” the surprise move by Yoon could cast a level of doubt on the partnership and weaken the burgeoning Japan-South Korea partnership, observers say.

It also adds another level of uncertainty on the eve of the return to the White House of President-elect Donald Trump, who has previously expressed skepticism about the financial arrangement between the US and South Korea on hosting US troops.

“Yoon’s actions most likely will raise questions about South Korea’s reliability and predictability as an ally and a partner in the eyes of the United States and Japan,” said Rachel Minyoung Lee, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center think tank in Washington.

“This is serious in light of the fact that there is now a stronger-than ever nuclear component in the (US-South Korea) alliance,” she added, pointing to a 2023 mechanism upgrading cooperation on nuclear deterrence between the US and South Korea, which does not have its own nuclear weapons but relies on the US arsenal.

Troubled neighborhood

The political turmoil also raises a potential opening for Kim Jong Un to capitalize on the chaos.

The North Korean leader is known to choose opportune political moments for major weapons tests – for example firing a new intercontinental ballistic missile days before the US presidential election last month.

“We know that North Korea likes to lampoon South Korea’s democratic system whenever there is tumult in Seoul,” said Edward Howell, a lecturer in politics at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, who focuses on the Korean Peninsula.

“We should not be surprised if Pyongyang exploits the domestic crisis in South Korea to its advantage, either rhetorically or otherwise,” he said.

People gather outside the National Assembly in Seoul in the early morning of December 4.

The developments – and the potential, now, for a change of leadership in South Korea – are also likely being closely watched by Beijing and Moscow, who both deeply oppose US military presence in Asia.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping and his officials in particular have watched with ire as the US has strengthened its partnerships with allies in the region – in the face of concerns in Washington about a growing threat from Beijing and its deepening security coordination with Moscow.

And Yoon, who’s taken a harder line on North Korea than many of his predecessors, has been a willingly staunch partner of the US.

The Yoon government has also suggested that deployment of North Korean troops into Ukraine could cause it to reassess the level of military support it gives to the war-torn country, to which it does not directly supply lethal arms.

All that raises the international stakes for the current political moment, whatever its outcome for Yoon, according to Howell.

“At a time when South Korea’s interests in the Ukraine war have gained prominence, given North Korea’s now full-fledged involvement, Seoul’s cooperation with allies cannot be hampered by domestic division,” he said.

Missing grandmother believed to have fallen into sinkhole: Police

A search and rescue mission is currently underway for Elizabeth Pollard.

Rescuers were desperately searching for a grandmother who they believe fell into a gaping sinkhole — holding out hope of finding her despite the difficult rescue conditions.

The search and rescue mission has, so far, not turned up any signs of Elizabeth Pollard in Unity Township, Pennsylvania State Police said Tuesday.

“Hopefully she’s in an air pocket,” authorities said, noting that there have been incidents in the region where people have survived similar situations in underground mines. “This is a rescue to me until something says that it’s not.”

The sinkhole is believed to be tied to an abandoned coal mine, officials said.

Search crews have been able to make entry into the mine area, Trooper Steve Limani told reporters at the scene Tuesday evening. The search will continue as long as needed pending any safety concerns, he said.

Rescue teams from nearby areas have joined forces, swapping shifts to keep the effort going. Oxygen tankers are being delivered regularly to supply the mine shaft, and crews have made progress entering the underground area.

The conditions are tough, with clay-like soil making it difficult to dig, but rescuers remain determined. “We’re doing everything we can, and no one is giving up,” said Liman

He added, “It’s heartbreaking for her family and everyone here. But we’re not stopping. We’re all hoping for a miracle.”

Pollard was reported missing by a family member shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, Limani said at an earlier press conference Tuesday.

Pollard was last seen around 5 p.m. Monday, Limani said. The family member said Pollard had gone out to look for her cat Monday afternoon but has not been heard from since, he said.

Pollard’s vehicle was located shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday with her 5-year-old granddaughter inside, though Pollard was nowhere to be seen, police said.

“At that point in time we realized this could be a very bad situation,” Limani said.

While searching for Pollard in the area, troopers found an apparent sinkhole with an opening about the “size of a manhole” 15 to 20 feet away from the vehicle, Limani said.

Emergency responders were called to the scene in what is currently being considered a rescue mission, authorities said. Local firefighters, a technical rescue team and the state’s Bureau of Mine Safety are among those working alongside an excavation team to remove dirt to access the sinkhole, Limani said.

The current evidence points toward Pollard being in the sinkhole, Limani said.

“We don’t feel a reason that we should be looking elsewhere,” he said.

The sinkhole appears to have been created during the time that Pollard was walking around, Limani said, noting that there is no evidence that the hole was there before she started looking for her cat.

A camera inserted into the opening of the sinkhole showed a “big void, and it was all different depths,” Marguerite Fire Chief Scot Graham told reporters during the earlier press briefing.

“The process is long and it is tedious,” Graham said.

A camera did not pick up any sounds, though authorities did see a “modern-type” shoe in the sinkhole, according to Pleasant Unity Fire Chief John Bacha.

The mine last operated in 1952, according to the state’s Department of Environmental Protection. The depth to the coal seam in this area is approximately 20 feet, a department spokesperson said.

Once the scene is clear, the department will investigate the site “to determine if this issue is the result of historic mine subsidence,” the spokesperson said.

Pollard’s granddaughter is safe, despite the cold temperatures overnight, and is currently with her parents, Limani said.

The family is asking for privacy at this time and is hoping for “good news,” he said.

“We need to get a little bit lucky,” Limani said. “We’re going to do everything we can.”
