One video viewer vowed they were ‘never swimming outside a pool’ again

Not scared of diving into the deep blue? Well, you might be after getting a load of what this guy caught on camera.

According to Healthline, around five to ten percent of the population have thalassophobia. That’s a crushing fear of deep bodies of water, if you didn’t know!

A survey conducted by the University of South Australia back in 2021 claimed that a lot of people who hate the water are petrified of sharks, while others are a bit more wary of drowning in deep water.

A big chunk of people are actually scared of other animal encounters too, and, after watching this viral social media video, you may be as well.

Basically, it shows a guy who works on an oil rig amusing himself while standing on top of one of the towering platforms.

For starters, those with a fear of heights were left feeling quite sickly, while others couldn’t believe that the man had put his trust in a metal grate to take his weight.

Although oil rigs are obviously erected with safety stuff in mind, it does look like the ideal spot for some kind of James Bond villain to install a trap door.

But thankfully, it isn’t Goldfinger up there – it’s just some Redditor mucking about while on his lunch break.

Anyway, he decides to drop a portion of his leftovers through the holes in the walkway, which is hundreds of feet in the air, right down into the ocean below to see what happens.

The identity of the snack he sent down to the fishes also sparked much debate online, as although it appeared to be some sort of flapjack, others reckoned it could have been a cookie or a chicken nugget.

But that is besides the point – unless you are trying to find out what aquatic creatures have an appetite for, of course.

Would you want to go swimming with the so-called aquatic beasts? (Reddit)

As the unknown food object tumbled through the air, all was quiet – until it got a few feet away from the surface.

Out of nowhere, what looks like hundreds of fish start thrashing around in the previously calm waters as they all battle it out to get their hands on the gift from the skies.

They dart across to where it landed and devour the small chunk of grub, no doubt reducing it to nothing in just a matter of seconds.

As you can imagine, the footage has made people think twice about diving into what appear to be empty waters, as it seems you never know what could be lying in wait.

One viewer said: “Well, I’m never swimming outside a pool ever again.”

A second joked: “Note to self: don’t fall off an oil rig.”

“Bro singlehandedly caused an all-out war down there,” penned a fellow Redditor.

“That metal floor is the difference between you living another day or turning into fish food,” another commented.

Someone else chimed in, saying: “I’m not going into that water.”

Others pointed out that fish tend to hang about near oil rigs due to it being a good spot for plants and marine life to base, while they also get the odd scrap off humans.

But as we all know, where fish go, sharks tend to follow.

Another social media user pointed out: “Food drops, pool of fish emerge. Pool of fish emerge, sharks emerge.”

Some even said the footage seemed to have captured the ‘real life version’ of the Lachrymose Leeches in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events… and if that isn’t enough to keep you out of the water, I don’t know what is.

Urgent warning to iPhone users after Apple removes major security protection tool in UK

The UK government has forced Apple to make the move after it asked for the right to access users’ data

A security row has erupted after Apple decided to pull the highest level of data security tools, after the UK government asked for the right to access the data.

Advanced Data Protection (ADP) is a tool which protects your data stored in the iCloud with end-to-end encryption. The tool means only the user who owns it can see the data, such as pictures and documents, and not even Apple can see them.

Before you think of upgrading to a new phone or making a switch from Android, be aware that new customers in the UK will no longer have access to the advanced security settings immediately, with many fearing the change will open a back door to bad actors.

An Apple spokesperson said: “Apple can no longer offer Advanced Data Protection (ADP) in the United Kingdom to new users and current UK users will eventually need to disable this security feature.”

“We are gravely disappointed that the protections provided by ADP will not be available to our customers in the UK given the continuing rise of data breaches and other threats to customer privacy.”

It will still remain available outside of the UK.

So in real terms, what do these changes mean for iPhone users? Data that falls under standard data protection will now be accessible by Apple and also shareable with law enforcement if they have a warrant.

The removal of ADP doesn’t affect the 14 iCloud data categories that are end-to-end encrypted by default. This includes services like iMessage and FaceTime, iCloud Keychain and Health.

The areas to be concerned about are the nine iCloud categories which now only fall under Standard Data Protection.

These nine categories are iCloud Backup, iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes, Reminders, Safari Bookmarks, Siri Shortcuts, Voice Memos, Wallet Passes, and Freeform, which will now no longer have an option for end-to-end encryption.

Until these changes, nobody else could access your data, not even Apple.

The government had requested access and for the changes to be made.

The Apple spokesperson explained: “Enhancing the security of cloud storage with end-to-end encryption is more urgent than ever before.”

“Apple remains committed to offering our users the highest level of security for their personal data and are hopeful that we will be able to do so in the future in the United Kingdom.

“As we have said many times before, we have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products or services and we never will.”

The Apple website explains: “Standard data protection is the default setting for your account. Your iCloud data is encrypted in transit and stored in an encrypted format at rest.

“The encryption keys from your trusted devices are secured in Apple data centres, so Apple can decrypt your data on your behalf whenever you need it, such as when you sign in on a new device, restore from a backup or recover your data after you’ve forgotten your password.

“As long as you can sign in to your Apple Account successfully, you can access your backups, photos, documents, notes and more.”

Will Cathcart is the head of WhatsApp, and he shared his concerns over the government’s request.

He wrote: “If the UK forces a global backdoor into Apple’s security, it will make everyone in every country less safe. One country’s secret order risks putting all of us in danger and it should be stopped.”

The decision means Apple can no longer offer ADP to new users from today, and they will be providing guidance to existing users and customers in the UK soon.

The level of security means Apple cannot just disable ADP automatically.

Users will instead be given a window of time to disable the function themselves in order to be able to keep accessing their iCloud account.

The tech giant is unable to disable ADP automatically, and instead, you’ll be given a period of time to disable it yourself in order to keep using your iCloud account. Since it was an opt-in tool, you won’t have it enabled if you haven’t chosen to do so.

Outside of the UK, ADP continues to be available everywhere.

The change comes after the UK Government demanded to be given access to encrypted data stored by Apple in the cloud service, and the demand for access came from the Home Office under the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA).

The act forces companies to provide information to law enforcement agencies.

If there are any apps that you are concerned about being left unsecured within an iCloud backup, you should disable these from within your iCloud settings.

The tragedy occurred along a popular tourist route in Sri Lanka

A Russian tourist has died in Sri Lanka after leaning out of a train carriage to take a selfie.

It’s no secret that travellers will go to extreme lengths to get the perfect snapshots of their holidays to share on social media, and several tourists will go to dangerous lengths to get the perfect photo—sometimes with deadly consequences.

This is what happened to 53-year-old Olga Perminova, from Saratov, Russia, after she leaned out of a train carriage to take a photo on Sri Lanka’s famous Podi Menike train route.

Perminova had been travelling towards the town of Ella on a route which has become increasingly popular with tourists due to its picturesque scenery and passes over the famous Nine Arches Bridge.

While passing through luscious green forests and mountainous terrain, Perminova decided to document the moment and leaned backwards out of the carriage while holding handrails.

This is where tragedy would occur as Perminova collided with a rock, fell from the carriage and suffered severe head injuries, later dying in hospital.

A report from local authorities explained that Perminova, a grandmother from the Moscow region, had died after falling from the train while ‘attempting to take a selfie’ between the Badulla and Hali Ela railway stations.

“The woman knocked against a rock, fell off the train and sustained severe injuries,” the report added.

Photos from Perminova’s final moments show her wearing a pink dress and learning out of the carriage while smiling.

Her body will now be repatriated back to the Eastern European country.

Perminova’s tragic death is one of many cautionary tales of tourists dying at holiday hotspots.

According to statistics published by Slate, there was 379 selfie-related deaths between the period of 2008 and 2021.

Recent fatalities include the 35-year-old Tobias Fischer, who died while hiking in in the Taganga district of northern Colombia last October.

According to MailOnline, he had tried to take a selfie near a viewpoint when he lost his footing and fell into a nearby ravine.

His death was later reported as an accident.

Meanwhile, Czech athlete Natalie Stichova fell to her death just two months earlier near a castle in Bavaria, Germany which is popular with tourists.

The 23-year-old had reportedly fallen 80 metres down the Tegelberg Mountain in August 2024 after attempting to take a photo of Neuschwanstein Castle, which served as the inspiration for Walt Disney classic Sleeping Beauty.

Man who suspected wife was trying to poison him swapped meals with son and set up cameras to prove it

Man who suspected wife was trying to poison him swapped meals with son and set up cameras to prove it

It’s the stuff of nightmares suspecting your spouse is trying to poison you, so one man set about catching his wife out to uncover the truth

An Australian court has heard how a man set up a trap to test his wife when he suspected she was poisoning the food she was preparing for him.

A Perth father had been suffering from a mysterious illness, which he claimed cleared up only when he went away on holiday.

Robert Knapinski, 64, was suspicious that his wife Bozena, 63, had been deliberately making him sick. In a bid to prove what she was up to, Robert swapped his meal for his son’s as his wife looked on.

He had also set up hidden cameras around the home, which revealed his wife of over 40 years was pouring dangerously toxic levels of selenium into his drinking water.

Selenium is sold as an antioxidant in Australia, and is intended to boost the immune system. When taken in excessive amounts, it can cause stomach pains, dizziness, vomiting, cardiac failure and even death.

Ms Knapinski is accused of poisoning her husband with selenium (Nine News)

After capturing the footage, he reported his wife to the police, and she was arrested in April 2023. Instead of drinking the water, Knapinski managed to hide 13 bottles away, which were then given to the police for testing.

She is now standing trial at the Supreme Court of West Australia, where she is accused of poisoning her husband and has pleaded not guilty to six counts of intent to harm endangering the life of another person.

Clinical toxicologist Dr Kerry Hoggett explained just how high the selenium levels were in the bottles, at 140 to 1100 times higher than Australian drinking water guidelines.

Ms Knapinski insists she did nothing wrong and just wanted to make him ‘more vibrant’ and was ‘doing it to make him feel better’, the Daily Mail reports.

Her lawyer has called her former husband a hypochondriac. She insists she was trying to help Robert with his health and to improve their marriage.

Bozena’s lawyer, Michael Tudori, says his client often worked two jobs and did most of the housework and cleaning. They claim that Robert complained daily ‘about some medical pain or suffering’.

However, Robert insists his now ex-wife was actually upset about an affair he had, which he says took place during a seven month ‘separation’ in 2021, and that she said she ‘would forgive but not forget’. During the time of separation, Ms Knapinski had moved into a bedroom upstairs in the home they shared together.

Robert had said he had been feeling unwell for years, but became suspicious in 2022, after he suddenly felt better when he went on holiday without his wife, during a four month trip to Poland.

When he returned from his travels, he decided to put his wife to the test, and chose to swap some of his food with their son’s plate, while she was looking.

He explained to the court why he did this: “[I was] just testing her reaction – I would think, if she poisoned something, she would react.”

Mr Knapinski confirmed he has been out of work for 40 years since suffering a back injury in 1988, but could not explain the nature of the injury or how it happened.

Mr Knapinski told the court he had received a meagre disability pension since the incident.

He denied the defence team’s claims that his ex-wife did the lion’s share of working and raising their son.

State prosecutor Brett Tooker said of their marriage: “As the years progressed, it became very unhealthy.”

Mr Tudori said Robert Knapinski ‘went to numerous specialists, dozens of specialists, dozens of other practitioners, he complained about lots of issues including a rash on his neck and abdominal issues going back a decade’.

They insisted that Ms Knapinski hadn’t meant to harm him, and insisted her ex-husband was a ‘hypochondriac’.

The trial continues.

Experts first made the discovery in Earth’s magnetic field in 2020

Scientists have discovered a monumental ‘weak spot’ in our planet’s magnetic field is growing, which could have huge consequences for us on Earth.

Space is constantly changing, with NASA focusing many of their attentions on the ‘city-destroying’ asteroid these days.

But that doesn’t mean the space agency isn’t working on other things behind the scenes, and it was revealed earlier this year that NASA had been alerted to a huge ‘dent’ in Earth’s magnetic field that could prove dangerous to both biological and mechanical production.

The discovery has scientists concerned (Getty Stock Photo)

The massive ‘weak spot’ could potentially allow dangerous radiation from the Sun to penetrate the surface of our planet, according to NASA.

The area of which the discovery has been made is known as the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), and it stretches around 4,300,000 square miles across an area that encompasses the continents of South America and Africa.

It’s believed this SAA has expanded by around seven percent since it was discovered in 2020, though experts have seen a ton of changes in it ever since.

Scientists say the SAA has shifted from a single zone into two separate ‘blobs’ that compromise Earth due to limited magnetic strength.

Earth’s magnetic field is extremely crucial, as it prevents dangerous radiation from the Sun that would prove harmful to biological life on the surface.

You’ve also got the impacts on technology, with damage to satellites in orbit right now potentially disabling computer signals and compromising satellite data collection.

Terry Sabaka, a geophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said: “Even though the SAA is slow-moving, it is going through some change in morphology, so it’s also important that we keep observing it by having continued missions, because that’s what helps us make models and predictions.”

It comes as the space boffins over at NASA continue to look closer into the ‘city-destroying’ asteroid that could hit Earth on December 22, 2032.

As for where it’ll hit the Earth, David Rankin, who works as an operations engineer for the University of Arizona’s Catalina Sky Survey, mapped out a ‘risk corridor’, predicting it to collide anywhere around northern South America, across the Pacific Ocean, southern Asia, the Arabian Sea, and Africa.

That would mean that India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador would be at risk of taking the brunt of the impact.

Breaking: Stunning Images Reveal $35 Million Texas Town Elon Musk Bought For Two Women And Their 13 Children

In an unexpected move that has stunned both the media and public, Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has reportedly purchased a $35 million town in Texas. The town, which spans several acres, is intended to become a private sanctuary for two women and their combined 13 children. As details continue to emerge, images of this extraordinary real estate purchase have sparked widespread intrigue, leaving many questioning Musk’s motivations behind such a massive and unconventional investment.

Elon Musk’s latest acquisition is unlike any of his previous high-profile investments. The town, nestled in the heart of Texas, cost the tech mogul a staggering $35 million. The sprawling property features multiple homes, private amenities, and expansive grounds that offer privacy and security. Given Musk’s history of bold and ambitious ventures, this new investment has caught the attention of people around the world.

The town is not just a simple property—it’s a statement. The combination of large, luxurious homes and a wide variety of facilities means that this Texas town will likely be a self-sustaining community for the women and children living there. Musk’s decision to buy an entire town further emphasizes his inclination to create environments that cater to the specific needs of those close to him, offering a level of privacy and exclusivity few can match.

The central aspect of this acquisition is the women and their 13 children, whose personal lives have remained largely out of the public eye. Musk’s relationship with these women and his commitment to providing a secure environment for them has sparked a great deal of curiosity. While many details about their identities remain private, it’s clear that Musk is focused on offering them a peaceful and comfortable living space that can support their large family.

The 13 children, ranging in ages from toddlers to teenagers, will undoubtedly benefit from the expansive property. With space to play, grow, and learn in a protected environment, the families will be able to live without the pressures and prying eyes that come with being part of Musk’s high-profile life.

Elon Musk is no stranger to making unorthodox decisions, and this $35 million town purchase is no exception. Many have questioned what motivated Musk to make such a unique investment, especially given his other business interests that typically focus on technology and space exploration.

One plausible reason for this purchase could be Musk’s desire to create a private, stable, and safe environment for his loved ones. Known for his forward-thinking approach to life, Musk may be seeking a way to provide these women and children with a level of security and comfort that is difficult to find in today’s fast-paced world. With his busy schedule and constant media attention, it’s not surprising that Musk would want to create a secluded space where his family can thrive away from the scrutiny of the public eye.

Additionally, the idea of building a community that fosters close-knit living could reflect Musk’s personal beliefs in innovative and forward-thinking living arrangements. Musk has long been an advocate for new ways of thinking about the future, whether it’s in the form of electric vehicles, space travel, or urban living. This town purchase could be his way of experimenting with a new concept for family living.

### What Makes This Texas Town So Special?

The Texas town Musk bought is far more than just a private residence. The property boasts multiple homes, each with ample space for individual families. There are also various amenities designed to promote self-sufficiency and comfort, including recreational areas, parks, and private spaces for work and study.

The location of the town adds another layer of intrigue. Situated in a scenic area of Texas, it provides both seclusion and easy access to major cities like Austin and Dallas. This balance of privacy and connectivity is likely a key factor in Musk’s decision to invest in the property.

The town’s facilities are reportedly designed to cater to the needs of the two women and their children. The private homes are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring that both families have everything they need to live in comfort and safety. With Musk’s wealth, the entire town will likely be a self-sustaining hub where all of their needs can be met without the need for external intervention.

### How the Internet Is Reacting to the $35 Million Purchase

As news of Musk’s $35 million Texas town purchase continues to circulate, the internet has been buzzing with reactions. Social media platforms have exploded with speculation, memes, and debates over the reasoning behind Musk’s purchase. Some fans and followers have applauded Musk for taking care of those close to him in such an extravagant and thoughtful way, while others have expressed concern about the impact this purchase may have on his personal and professional life.

On one hand, Musk’s supporters are excited to see him make such a bold move, believing that it shows his commitment to providing for his loved ones in an innovative and visionary way. On the other hand, critics have raised questions about the ethics of Musk’s decision, questioning whether such an extravagant purchase is necessary or if it could create even more attention around his personal life.

Despite these differing opinions, one thing is certain: the internet is captivated by this latest Musk acquisition. As more images and details emerge about the property, the world will undoubtedly continue to speculate on the reasons behind Musk’s decision and what it means for his family’s future.

### A Bold, Private New Chapter for Elon Musk

Elon Musk’s $35 million Texas town purchase is a clear example of his unconventional thinking and willingness to invest in bold ventures. Whether his goal is to provide a private sanctuary for his loved ones or experiment with innovative living arrangements, the town represents a new chapter in his already extraordinary life.

As images of the stunning property continue to surface, the world watches closely to see what this acquisition means for Musk’s personal life and the future of his family. One thing is for sure—Elon Musk’s purchase has captured the world’s attention, and the internet is buzzing with curiosity about what will happen next.

Aaliyah

Aaliyah’s life was tragically cut short on August 25, 2001, when a plane she was traveling on crashed shortly after takeoff in the Bahamas. At the time, the singer was on the island to film the music video for her song “Rock the Boat.”

The small Cessna plane, which was carrying Aaliyah and eight other passengers, crashed moments after departing Marsh Harbour Airport. The aircraft was reportedly overloaded with luggage, and there were concerns from the ground crew about the excessive weight.

Despite these warnings, the passengers insisted on bringing their belongings and the plane took off. Dr. Giovander Raju, the pathologist who performed autopsies on Aaliyah and several of the other victims, testified at a coroner’s inquest in Nassau.

He revealed that Aaliyah had died from severe burns and a blow to the head caused by the crash. “Aaliyah went into such a state of shock, even if she had survived the crash, recovery would have been near impossible,” Dr. Raju stated.

His findings also indicated that Aaliyah had a generally weak heart. Additionally, there were several theories about Aaliyah’s condition before boarding the flight.

Witnesses claimed she was not feeling well on the day of the flight and had complained of a headache. It was also reported that she had been given a pill, and after taking it, she fell asleep before boarding the plane.

Mara Schiavocampo, a senior investigative correspondent, recounted, “She was so deep in sleep that she may not have even been aware that she was on the airplane.”

In the aftermath of the crash, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed that the plane’s pilot, Luis Morales III, was not authorized to fly the aircraft.

Morales had falsified his qualifications, and it was discovered that he was under the influence of alcohol and narcotics at the time of the crash.

The investigation pointed to several factors that contributed to the crash, including an unauthorized pilot, an overloaded plane, and the pilot’s impairment. The findings only deepened the tragedy, as the accident was ultimately preventable.

Aaliyah’s death sent shockwaves through the music world, leaving fans and colleagues devastated. She had accomplished so much at 22 and was on the cusp of even greater success.

She emerged as a major force in R&B during the 1990s. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan, her smooth voice and charismatic stage presence made her a standout.

Her debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number,” released in 1994, helped launch her into stardom. The album, produced by R. Kelly, introduced Aaliyah’s unique blend of sultry vocals and youthful charisma, but it also sparked controversy due to her personal relationship with R. Kelly.

Along with them were assistant basketball coach Christina Mauser, Sarah Chester and her daughter, Payton, and baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife, Keri, and their daughter, Alyssa. The flight was piloted by Ara Zobayan, an experienced aviator who had flown Kobe on previous trips.

Fifteen minutes after takeoff, the pilot requested clearance to enter Burbank airspace despite poor visibility. Thick fog covered the area, forcing him to ask for special visual flight rules (VFR) permission, which allows pilots to navigate through low-visibility conditions.

Air traffic congestion required the helicopter to circle for 11 minutes before being allowed to proceed north toward Van Nuys Airport. As they continued flying, the clouds remained dense, making navigation more difficult.

At approximately 9:44 a.m., the aviator told air traffic controllers that he was climbing to 4,000 feet to get above the cloud cover. However, instead of gaining altitude, the helicopter slightly ascended before banking left and rapidly descending.

One minute later, it crashed into a hillside, killing everyone on board. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the accident resulted from spatial disorientation, a condition where a pilot loses awareness of their actual position.

This phenomenon can make a pilot believe they are climbing when they are actually descending. Anthony Brickhouse, a former NTSB investigator, described the dangers of flying in poor visibility.

“When you have clear skies and good visibility, you can see what you need to see. But unfortunately, when you’re in clouds, sometimes physiologically, your brain, based on your inner ear, you kind of get confused,” he noted.

Investigators closely examined the weather that day, compiling a 394-page meteorological report. Photos and videos showed heavy fog and low clouds covering the hilltops, limiting visibility.

Both the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Police Department had grounded their own helicopters that morning due to unsafe conditions.

Despite this, the pilot proceeded with the flight. Lawsuits later filed by Kobe’s widow, Vanessa Bryant, and other victims’ families argued that the helicopter should never have taken off under such dangerous circumstances.

While the Sikorsky S-76B had a strong safety record and had previously carried the basketball icon — who sent one of his last messages to fellow baseball icon Nancy Lieberman — on multiple occasions, it lacked key safety features.

The helicopter did not have a flight recorder or a terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), which alerts pilots when they are dangerously close to the ground. The Federal Aviation Administration requires TAWS in medical helicopters but not in commercial ones like the one Kobe was flying in.

On February 9, the NTSB held a hearing to discuss the crash and to consider recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. The loss of Kobe, his daughter, and the other passengers devastated fans worldwide, serving as a heartbreaking reminder of the risks of flying in unsafe conditions.

Lech Kaczyński

On April 10, 2010, a plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczyński, his wife, Maria, and several senior political, military, and cultural leaders crashed while attempting to land in western Russia. There were no survivors.

The tragedy shocked Poland, as it claimed the lives of many of the country’s most influential figures in an instant. Lech had been a controversial figure both in Poland and on the world stage.

His conservative views appealed to many traditionalist and rural voters, helping him secure the presidency in 2005 as a candidate for the Law and Justice Party.

For a time, he and his twin brother, Jarosław Kaczyński, held significant power in Poland’s government, with Lech as president and Jarosław as prime minister from 2006 to 2007.

Born in 1949, Lech’s political career took shape in the late 1970s when he joined the anti-government movement. He and his brother were instrumental in helping Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa win Poland’s first post-Communist presidential election in 1990.

However, their alliance with Wałęsa later dissolved due to political disagreements. The crash not only took the life of Poland’s president but also left the nation reeling from the loss of many of its top officials. The impact of the tragedy extended beyond Poland, influencing its political landscape and relations with Russia.

John F. Kennedy Jr.

John F. Kennedy Jr. died on July 16, 1999, when the plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. The accident also claimed the lives of his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, 33, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, 34. John was 38 years old.

That evening, John planned to fly from New Jersey’s Caldwell Airport to Martha’s Vineyard, where Lauren would be dropped off. From there, he and Carolyn intended to continue on to Hyannis Port to attend the wedding of his cousin, Rory Kennedy.

Earlier in the day, he had spent time at the office of his political magazine, George, before meeting Lauren at 6 p.m. for the drive to the airport. Carolyn arrived separately by car service. By the time the plane took off at 8:38 p.m., the sun was setting, and the hazy conditions had worsened.

John was flying a Piper Saratoga, a more advanced aircraft than the Cessna he had previously piloted. Though he had begun instrument training, he was not yet qualified to fly using only cockpit instruments — a crucial skill for navigating poor visibility.

As he followed the coastline of Connecticut and Rhode Island, conditions remained challenging. When he began his descent toward Martha’s Vineyard, his flight pattern became erratic, a sign of spatial disorientation.

Experts later determined that John had likely entered what is known as a “graveyard spiral,” a deadly phenomenon where a pilot, unable to see the horizon, unknowingly enters a downward spiral.

“The airplane makes a spiral nose down…kind of like going down a drain,” explained Jeff Guzzetti, president of Guzzetti Aviation Risk Discovery. “The plane went into one final turn and it stayed in that turn pretty much all the way down to the ocean.”

The aircraft crashed into the water roughly seven miles from Martha’s Vineyard. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the accident was caused by John losing control of the plane due to spatial disorientation, with haze and darkness contributing to the disaster.

Guzzetti later reflected on the tragedy, saying, “In the end, it’s a cautionary tale for any private pilot to understand your own personal limitations.”

It is believed that John and Carolyn faced numerous challenges within their marriage, which became more pronounced in the weeks and days leading up to their tragic death.

One significant stressor was the impending death of John’s closest cousin, Anthony, who was battling cancer. John was also struggling to secure new financing for his political magazine.

Carolyn, on the other hand, grappled with the challenges of living in the global spotlight. John had grown used to media attention throughout his life. However, she found the constant surveillance invasive and terrifying at times.

“They were both very sympathetic to what the other one was going through, but also getting a little impatient. Sort of, ‘When will things be okay at George?'” revealed author Elizabeth Beller.

“‘When will we stop having to have every night be about going out to promote the magazine or look for advertisers?’ And [John] felt like, ‘When are you going to be able to handle the press, because it’s not going to go away?'” she continued.

There were rumors of infidelity and lingering resentment, including Carolyn’s reported frustration with the fact that John had never introduced her to his mother before she died on May 19, 1994.

Attending Rory’s wedding in Hyannis Port was supposed to be a final bid to mend their strained relationship. Sadly, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette never made it.

At the time, she was fresh off the success of “Gremlins” and rehearsing a Russian play, while he was immersed in his role for Shakespeare’s “Henry V.” Kline, a classically trained actor with two Tony Awards to his name, later reflected on their early encounters with characteristic humor.

A Private Wedding and a Lifelong Partnership

By March 1989, the bond they had nurtured over several years culminated in an intimate wedding ceremony held in New York City. At just 25 years old, the actress married Kline, who was 41 at the time and already a renowned figure in theater and film.

The couple’s understated celebration reflected their preference for privacy, with only close family and friends in attendance to witness their union. Soon after their marriage, they began planning for a family, welcoming their son, Owen, in 1991 and their daughter, Greta, a few years later in 1994.

To ensure a stable upbringing for their children, they established a system that prioritized family life over their demanding careers. “We have agreed to alternate so that we’re never working at the same time,” Kline explained. But even when it was her turn to work, his wife would choose to stay home with their children.

Reflecting on their early days as a married couple, Kline emphasized the importance of their commitment to family, stating, “We’re both sensible, and we don’t separate for long periods of time. We take care of the marriage.” This decision is what set the stage for their family-centered existence.

Retiring for Family: Her Life-Altering Decision

At the peak of her career, the actress made a choice that surprised both fans and industry insiders—she stepped away from the spotlight entirely. After welcoming her two children, she decided to prioritize her role as a mother over her Hollywood ambitions.

Her husband has often spoken with admiration about her decision, noting that it wasn’t driven by necessity but by her genuine dedication to their family. “That was one of the many things I loved about her,” he shared. “She loved acting while she was doing it, but she was not driven by it, as I had been.”

Rather than juggle a demanding career alongside family life, she chose to step back entirely, ensuring her children grew up in a stable and nurturing environment. She managed the household without outside help, apart from occasional assistance with cleaning, and made it a point to cook dinner for the family every night.

Reflecting on this, she once said, “Some people have trouble with that, but I love it. I do it all.” Her decision not only allowed their family to flourish but also reinforced the strong foundation of their marriage, which continued to thrive under the values of compromise and shared priorities.

Raising Remarkable Children in an Artistic Household

The decision to prioritize family created a stable and nurturing environment for Owen and Greta, who grew up surrounded by creativity and support. Both followed their passions in the arts, reflecting their upbringing in an intellectually and artistically rich household.

Owen made a name for himself as a filmmaker and actor. He gained early recognition for his performance in “The Squid and the Whale” (2005), a critically acclaimed drama in which he portrayed a teenager navigating the complexities of family life.

Despite the accolades, Owen chose to shift his focus to directing, later releasing his debut feature film, “Funny Pages,” in 2022. Reflecting on his parents’ influence, he described their steadfast encouragement during his creative journey. “They wanted so badly for me to figure out a way to make my film,” he said.

Greta channeled her artistic talents into music. Performing under the name Frankie Cosmos, she became a celebrated figure in the indie music scene, known for her introspective lyrics and minimalist sound.

Greta’s career also reflected the support of her parents, who frequently attended her performances and encouraged her creative endeavors. Their steady presence and unyielding support allowed the siblings to flourish on their own terms.

Life Away from the Limelight

For over three decades, Phoebe Cates and Kline have maintained a life focused on family and grounded in simplicity. Now in their 35th year of marriage, the couple continues to prioritize their relationship and their children over the glitz of Hollywood.

“If your marriage lasts more than six months, you’re already in the Guinness Book of World Records, if you’re a Hollywood marriage,” Kline joked during a 2024 interview. He went on to say that he doesn’t consider their relationship a “Hollywood marriage” in either a literal or figurative sense.

The actor also explained that they’ve deliberately lived outside Hollywood and maintained a low-profile lifestyle. They have lived on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for most of their marriage, choosing a quieter existence far removed from the industry’s traditional hotspots.

Kline reflected on their bond, saying, “We have dinner all together once a week at least. The kids haven’t banished us from their lives.” He frequently attends Greta’s music performances, sometimes even participating in her shows.

Beyond family life, Cates found fulfillment in a new creative venture. In 2005, she opened Blue Tree, a boutique shop in Manhattan’s Carnegie Hill neighborhood. Cates described her vision for the store as “a general store but according to me,” curating an eclectic mix of women’s clothing, jewelry, home goods, and unique gifts.

The shop became a reflection of her creative energy, attracting a loyal following both locally and internationally. While she isn’t in the industry as much, Cates is still remembered for her work. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic Jennifer Aniston channeled an old character of Cates.

At the start of her scene, she quickly removed her denim jacket to reveal a red bikini over a white tank top. The bikini looked like the one that Cates wore in the original movie.

Even though Cates and Kline occasionally appear at premieres, award shows, and events like basketball games, the couple remains committed to their privacy.
