She can feel it ‘jump’ across her face

Brandi Glanville has made countless trips to doctors and spent eye-watering sums trying to figure out the cause of her facial disfigurement, which has rapidly deteriorated in the last 12 months.

The Californian former model sparked concern when she posted a selfie on Twitter on Sunday (December 8) where fans said she looked completely unrecognizable.

The 52-year-old said she suspects a ‘parasite’ took hold of her when filming the Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip in Morocco, and she can ‘feel’ it moving around under her skin.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said six months after she got back home, she started to have ‘this speaking thing and the swelling up thing’.

Now, it looks ‘like tiny bubbles bursting’ and Brandi horrified fans when she said she can feel the parasite ‘jumping’ from one side to the other – and even ‘s***ing or having babies in my face’.

The author also explained she posted the snap to put false rumours to bed.

Brandi said: “I’m so sick of the narrative that I’m sitting around having plastic surgery all the time. First of all, I couldn’t afford it if I wanted it. Secondly, no.”

“This is why I’m sitting at home”, she continued, “This is why I’m not on red carpets. Because I don’t want to go out like this.”

Brandi has also lost nearly half a dozen teeth, which she told the US Sun started from a bout of stress-induced angioedema.

To add insult to injury, medics are yet to come up with a formal diagnosis and she’s forked out more than $70,000 in the process.

Brandi said: “Honestly, I have so many doctors and I’ve had so many tests. I did lab work for $10,000. They ran every test under the sun. They’re like, ‘It could be a parasite that’s new’.”

Any treatments she’s had to date have only served to be a temporary fix and not a long-term solution.

The television personality admitted she’s become ‘stressed’ juggling medical bills while being out of work.

Understandably, her health issues have also taken a toll on her confidence and her social life.

She continued: “I’ve been on meds this whole year. I don’t socialize. I don’t go out and I’m just spending all of my money on trying to figure out what’s wrong with me.

“Everyone thinks I’m so tough but I’m fragile right now. It’s a very fragile time for me. I don’t remember a day when I haven’t cried. So leave me the f**k alone.”

After several trips to the doctors, Brandi said she’s not getting her hopes up for a diagnosis any time soon but said it would be ‘amazing’ just to have an answer.

She said: “This is a horrible thing to say but even if it’s like a tumor, I want to know. Honestly, health is wealth and that’s all I want.”

Man breaks down in tears as Antiques Roadshow expert reveals jaw-dropping price of blanket that was 'laying on the back of a chair'

It’s made the hall of fame as one of the best moments on the show ever

The moment a man burst into tears after hearing how much an old blanket was worth is considered one of the greatest scenes in Antiques Roadshow history.

In Tucson, Arizona, a man presented his seemingly unassuming blanket to the antiques expert, Donald Ellis, on the PBS program and was left stunned by what he had to say.

The guest, called Ted Kuntz, explained he didn’t know ‘an awful lot’ about the blanket, other than it was given as a gift from the notable 19th century fur-trapper and explorer, Kit Carson, to the foster father of his grandmother.

Donald asked Ted if he knew the origins of the ‘weaving’ or if he knew what kind of blanket it is.

The man said he hadn’t had anyone assess the materials before and shrugged saying: “It’s probably a Navajo, but that’s about all I know.”

He guessed the blanket perhaps belonged to a chief.

Visibly excited by the find, Donald, who founded a renowned gallery in the field of historical Native American art, then asked Ted: “Did you notice when you showed this to me that I kind of stopped breathing a little bit?

“I’m still having a little trouble breathing here, Ted.”

The appraiser went on to say it was much more than a chief’s blanket, explaining it is ‘the first type’ of a Ute chief’s blanket ever made, in about 1840 to 1860.

Donald couldn't contain his excitement with the find (YouTube/Antiques Roadshow PBS)

Donald said the ‘pure’ design of the fabric indicates it was dated at the beginning of Navajo weaving, with ‘valuable’ indigo dyes and hand-woven wool that is done with such skill it feels ‘like silk’ and repels water.

The expert then pointed out a small patchwork, which he said dated to the 1860s, having been repaired with raveled bayetta, and making it ‘extremely rare’.

Donald added: “They were very, very valuable at the time.”

But what value did he give the precious item at the time Ted appeared on the show in 2001?

Well, the pro said the blanket is in ‘unbelievably’ good condition and not only made for an ‘extraordinary piece of art’, but the greatest thing he’d seen on Antiques Roadshow.

He teased by asking Ted if he was a ‘wealthy man’ before admitting he was nervous to reveal the textile’s value, which he estimated to be $350,000 ‘on a really bad day’, to a whopping half a million dollars.

The revelation visibly shocked Ted, who said choking back tears that he had ‘no idea’ it could be worth so much as the blanket had been discarded, ‘laying on the back of a chair’.

Donald said: “You have a national treasure.

“When you walked in with this, I just about died.”

And that’s not including if they could prove Kit Carson’s connection to the Navajo blanket, which could increase the value by 20 percent.

Wiping away tears, the guest said: “Wow. My grandmother, you know, were poor farmers. There was no wealth in the family.

“Boy, I can’t believe it.

“I’m amazed and flabbergasted.”

Amazingly, the value of the blanket was estimated to be in the region of $750,000 to $1million as of 2016.

The heartwarming scene is considered by fans as one of the ‘all time classic Roadshow moments’, while PBS has lauded it as one of the show’s most valuable objects it ever appraised.

Ted later revealed to AZPM that the blanket was sold to anonymous buyer who donated it to The Detroit Institute of Arts – and he lived out his retirement a bit more comfortably.

Horrifying simulation shows what happened when a 'brain-eating parasite' entered girl's nostril while swimming

Long story short, you wouldn’t want to experience the same thing

A stomach-churning simulation has demonstrated what happened to a young girl who contracted a brain-eating parasite.

In 2016, Kali Hardig – who was 12 years old at the time – was left fighting for her life after contracting parasitic meningitis, a rare infection caused by brain-eating amoebas.

It’s believed Kali developed the parasite after swimming at a waterpark and, despite having a less than one percent of survival, the young girl lived to tell the tale.

It wasn’t without quite the health battle though, with Kali spending almost two months in hospital recovering from the infection called Naegleria fowleri, 22 days of which she was in intensive care.

Kali’s mother hailed it a ‘miracle’ that the girl survived the ordeal when speaking to CNN at the time.

As to what helped the young girl survive the ordeal, her doctors were able to get what was then a new experimental anti-amoeba drug straight from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Since then, a horrifying simulation has been created and shared to YouTube to demonstrate what happened when a brain-eating parasite burrowed into a young girl after entering her body via her nose.

The now-viral video – which has been viewed over 2.5 million times in just 24 hours – doesn’t name Kali as the person it’s based on, but the situations are very similar.

In the clip, it explains that the parasite entered the girl’s brain after she jumped into a pool and it then ‘burrowed into her brain, destroying tissue and causing swelling’.

Symptoms the girl in the video had included a headache, high fever and projectile vomiting, which started the day after she’d been swimming.

Then she was placed in a coma for 22 days, but a rare drug saved her.

While she survived the ordeal, it left the girl having to relearn to walk, talk and swim again.

People have been quick to share shock at the girl’s experience and the fact that she lived.

“She is a fighter for enduring all of it and surviving,” someone said. “Swimming again after rehabilitation only makes her a legend.”

“It’s crazy how she survived a 1% chance of survival. True respect,” added another.

Elsewhere people were quick to applaud the doctors who cared for her.

“Doctors seriously deserve a MAD award, for not giving up on her life, even when there’s a 1% chance of survival. Truly, respect,” gushed one person.

A second person wrote: “That one drug saved a girl’s life respect whoever made that drug.”

Disturbing sentence woman who ripped out her own eyes was screaming as she committed horrifying act

Kaylee Muthart was just 20 years old when she began attacking her own eyes

Warning: This article contains discussion of drug use and self harm which some readers may find distressing.

An onlooker who witnessed a 20-year-old woman tearing out her own eyes, while under the influence of drugs, heard her screaming some disturbing words in the process.

Kaylee Muthart, from Anderson, South Carolina, had been high on crystal meth – ‘a larger dose than [she’d] ever used before’ – when she began attacking her own eyes with her bare hands on February 6, 2018.

The 20-year-old had been using recreational drugs since she was 18 years old, beginning with cannabis before she began experimenting with meth.

On the morning of February 6, she was still high from the hit she’d taken the day before, and began hallucinating as she wandered towards a church along a railroad track.

In an article written for Cosmopolitan, Kaylee recalled everything looking ‘dark and gloomy’ as she was suddenly struck by the thought that she had to ‘sacrifice something important to right the world’.

“I thought everything would end abruptly, and everyone would die, if I didn’t tear out my eyes immediately. I don’t know how I came to that conclusion, but I felt it was, without doubt, the right, rational thing to do immediately,” she said.

Kaylee recalled trying to resist the feeling as she prayed and asked: “Why me? Why do I have to do this?”

She only felt the urge more strongly when a man she’d been staying with drove by and called out: “I locked up the house. Do you have the other key?”

For Kaylee, this was a ‘sign’ that her sacrifice was the ‘key’ to saving the world.

She then recalled pushing her fingers into her eyes and pulling until they popped out of the socket.

“It felt like a massive struggle, the hardest thing I ever had to do. Because I could no longer see, I don’t know if there was blood,” she recalled.

As she continued, a pastor nearby heard Kaylee screaming out.

While clawing out her eyes, plunging herself into blindness, she was shouting: “I want to see the light!”

The pastor managed to restrain Kaylee, but by the time he got to her she was already holding her eyeballs in her hands.

After she was restrained, Kaylee was rushed to hospital where doctors performed an emergency surgery to remove what was left of her eyes. She woke up two days later, blind, but knowing that she would be ‘okay’.

Looking back on the incident in her article, Kaylee said that while she had to get used to life without her vision, she’s ‘happier now’ than she lost her sight.

“It took losing my sight to get me back on the right path, but from the bottom of my heart, I’m so glad I’m here,” she said.

The student who tore out her own eyeballs while taking drugs had a gut-wrenching thought beforehand.

Kaylee Muthart was suffering from drug addiction when she ended up permanently blinding herself at just 20 years old.

Back in 2018, she was recovering from a mental breakdown while also going through a turbulent breakup all ultimately leading to an incident outside of a church in her hometown of South Carolina, US.

While Muthart’s memories of it are ‘fuzzy’ due to her ‘hallucinating’, she remembers being under the illusion ‘someone had to sacrifice something important to right the world, and that person was me’.

A pastor apparently heard her shouting ‘I want to see the light’ as he ran out to restrain her.

She recalled to Cosmopolitan: “He later said, when he found me, that I was holding my eyeballs in my hands. I had squished them, although they were somehow still attached to my head.”

Muthart lost her sight due to this, but it also led to her checking into rehab to kick her drug habit for good. Attending a school for the blind, she also received her first set of prosthetic eyes in 2020 and nowadays works in a restaurant to earn some cash before returning to her studies.

Having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the terrifying incident was somewhat an out-of-body experienced that changed her life forever.

And she explained what was going through her mind at the time: “I thought everything would end abruptly and everyone would die if I didn’t tear out my eyes immediately.”

So, she did just that.

“I pushed my thumb, pointer, and middle finger into each eye. I gripped each eyeball, twisted, and pulled until each eye popped out of the socket – it felt like a massive struggle, the hardest thing I ever had to do,” Muthart explained.

“Because I could no longer see, I don’t know if there was blood. But I know the drugs numbed the pain.”

While she does often find herself now pondering about what would have happened in her life if things had been different, she says she now tries ‘not to think too deeply about it’.

“I guess when I open the window or crack the window for my cat in the morning, I wonder what it looks like out there,” she told the Daily Star.

One of the most iconic coming of age comedies to ever be made could have looked very different Jonah Hill famously ‘hated’ one of his Superbad co-stars so much that he tried to stop him from being cast.

Clearly this apparent hatred never really affected things, because the film is a cult classic, beloved worldwide, and spawned the career of a number of stars.

Starring alongside Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Seth Rogen, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader, and Joe Lu Truglio, it was Hill’s first leading role.

It follows Hill’s Seth and Cera’s Evan as they try and find alcohol for an end of school party in order to impress Seth’s crush Jules, who is played by Emma Stone.

Despite the success of the film, however, Hill had tried to stop Judd Apatow from hiring one of his co-stars following his audition, where he ‘attacked’ and ‘insulted’ the Wolf of Wall Street star.

We’re talking about Christopher Mintz-Plasse, the American actor cast in the role of the iconic character of Fogell, who uses a fake ID with the iconic ‘McLovin’ name to buy booze. No surname. Iconic.

His performance is part of what makes the film as iconic as it is, with executive producer Judd Apatow certain that he was the man for the role after initial read throughs of the script with Mintz-Plasse.

But Hill wasn’t in agreement.

Mintz-Plasse secured the role after an open audition window for McLovin, which saw him compete against a number of young actors for the role – many of whom were friends of his from drama class.

He was the only one to get a callback, and he went on to read for the role alongside Hill and Cera.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2022, Hill said that Mintz-Plasse was ‘really, really amazing off the bat’. But he added: “I think he was really annoying to me at that time.”

Apatow remembered Mintz-Plasse being ‘very caustic’, adding that he ‘attacked Jonah and did improvs insulting Jonah’.

Seth Rogen, who played Officer Michaels, added: “Jonah immediately hated him. He was like – ‘that was f**king with my rhythm. I couldn’t perform with that guy’.”

Apatow, who has also directed the likes of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, claimed that Hill didn’t like Mintz-Plasse as a result and went as far as saying ‘I don’t want him doing it’.

“That’s exactly why we’re hiring him. It couldn’t be more perfect,” Apatow recalled saying. “The fact that it bothers you is exactly what we want.”

Speaking at Fan Expo Chicago, Mintz-Plasse said: “Jonah Hill hated me so much after my audition. I get it, I was 17, I was not a professional actor, I was in high school and we’re playing high school kids.

“So Jonah’s roasting me – and you remember being in high school, you just like yeah it’s my f**king buddy roasting me, it’s not going to bother me, I’m going to roast him back. And that’s what I did in the audition.

“And I left the room… and Jonah’s like ‘f**k that guy’.”

Mintz-Plasse said that the pair quickly put the beef to one side, however, with Hill messaging him saying he should have ‘big bro’d’ him after the audition and took him under his wing.

Woman who sleeps with married men reveals the one biggest sign that he’s cheating

If you’ve ever had suspicions that your husband is cheating, one woman with a lot of experience knows what to look for

Whether it’s just a gut feeling or maybe they’ve strayed before, sometimes you just get the fear that your spouse might be cheating.

Now one woman who considers herself an expert when it comes to sleeping with married men, has given the number one sign that they might be playing away.

It’s never nice to find out that someone has cheated, but while you might think ignorance is bliss, one woman says there’s a major tell that gives many cheaters away.

Micki Daniels is a former escort who spent more then a decade with many married clients.

Apparently, it all boils down to how protective your partner is of their phone.

Former escort Micki says she knows the red flags to look out for cheating husbands (themickidaniels/Instagram)

She told the Mail: “If he is possessive of his phone, avoids answering calls in front of you, or gets mad when you ask to use it, he’s hiding something.”

Micki says social media makes it easier than ever to cheat and has caused temptation to increase.

Keep an eye out for added security measures like adding new passwords or pins to a device, or no longer allowing you access to it if they did before.

Creating new and especially secret social media accounts are also a red flag, says Micki.

Another sign to look out for is if they start to pick petty fights for no reason, warns Micki: “Cheaters pull away or instigate petty fights so they can have a ‘time out.’”

They then use the following ‘cooling-off’ period to meet with their secret partners.

If there’s no effort at all after to kiss and make up, that’s another glaring red flag.

Micki says she slept with many married men over the years and knows their habits (themickidaniels/Instagram)

Daniels insists: “If they come back and try to sweep things under the rug, you should reconsider what they were really up to.”

There can be differences in behaviour in their routine too.

Micki says if a man rushes to get in the shower immediately after arriving home, he could be trying to get rid of any physical evidence he’s been unfaithful.

It’s the same if he runs to get washed off straight after intimacy: “Post-sex affection is linked to deepening connection between partners, so if he’s prioritizing a shower, perhaps he’s just having sex out of obligation.”

If he’s suddenly changed his look too or invested in nicer clothing, something else might be up: “When a cheater is on the prowl, they will up the ante by improving their physical presentation.”

Older men often get caught out thanks to bank statements or unusual spending, says Micki: “Younger men tend to be more cautious and don’t leave the same paper trail, but older men may not cover their tracks as effectively.”

So, if they’re no longer idly scrolling next to you, are obsessed with showers and are suddenly dressing a lot nicer, you might have to have an awkward conversation.

Woman Says She is ‘Abrosexual’ After It Took Her 30 Years To Realize Her Identity

Woman Says She is ‘Abrosexual’ After It Took Her 30 Years To Realize Her Identity

For many individuals, discovering their sexual identity is a long and complex journey. For Emma Flint, it took 30 years to truly understand her own. After a lifetime of fluctuating sexual attractions, Emma identified as “abrosexual,” a term that perfectly encapsulates the fluidity of her desires. Emma’s story is one of self-discovery and acceptance. But it also highlights the struggles that many face when they deviate from conventional labels. Her journey reflects the broader challenges of finding a space in society where fluid sexual identities are understood and respected.
A Lifetime of Uncertainty

From an early age, Emma found it difficult to pinpoint a fixed sexual identity. Like many people, she started by trying to understand her feelings within traditional labels such as “lesbian” or “bisexual.” However, her experiences did not fit neatly into these categories. There were times when she felt a deep attraction to women, other times to men, and at some points, she didn’t feel attracted to anyone at all. This constant shift left Emma feeling uncertain and isolated in her search for an identity. For years, she couldn’t make sense of these changing feelings, and the struggle was isolating. “I didn’t learn about abrosexuality until two years ago, when I was 30,” Emma wrote in a personal piece for Metro. It was only then that she was able to see herself clearly.

Discovering Abrosexuality

Abrosexuality is a term that describes individuals whose sexual or romantic attraction fluctuates over time. Unlike fixed sexual orientations like heterosexuality or homosexuality, abrosexuality is fluid. This means a person may feel attraction to one gender at one point and then shift to another gender or no attraction at all at another time. According to WebMD, people who identify as abrosexual often experience these changes in intensity and direction. Allowing them to form connections with a range of individuals. The term is derived from the Greek word “abro,” meaning “delicate” or “graceful,” which signifies the gentle, ever-changing nature of those who experience this fluidity. For Emma, discovering the term was a revelation. One that allowed her to embrace her identity fully without the pressure of fitting into a conventional box.

The Emotional Impact of Embracing Fluidity

Realizing that her sexuality was fluid was a huge moment of self-acceptance for Emma. It allowed her to acknowledge and understand herself in a way she hadn’t before. As she explained, one day she might feel like a lesbian, and the next day, she could feel attraction toward men or anyone in between. This constant flux was not a sign of confusion, but rather an inherent part of who she was. “My sexuality was fluid,” Emma writes, reflecting on the moment she came to this understanding. This realization gave her the confidence to live authentically, but it also opened the door to new challenges—particularly in explaining her identity to others.

Challenges of Explaining Abrosexuality to Others

While Emma found peace in embracing her abrosexuality, sharing this aspect of herself with others was not always easy. Many of her friends and family were unfamiliar with the term, and some reacted with confusion or doubt. One of Emma’s friends even texted her asking, “When did you decide this? Is this even a label? I’ve never heard of it.” While Emma appreciated the support, she was also taken aback by the lack of understanding. “I’m not expecting everyone to know what it means – hell, I didn’t until two years ago – but you should always listen with respect,” she wrote. She emphasizes the importance of being open to learning about new identities and, most importantly, treating others with kindness and respect during their journey of self-discovery.

Overcoming Dismissive Reactions

Despite the support from many of her loved ones, Emma has also encountered dismissive responses. Some that challenge her abrosexual identity. Some individuals have told her, “You’re just confused” or “Just say you’re bisexual and be done with it.” These remarks are frustrating, as they fail to acknowledge the validity of her experience and suggest that her fluidity is merely a phase or a confusion. Emma is steadfast in her refusal to be limited by others’ narrow perceptions. “I refuse to be boxed in by someone else’s limited knowledge,” she asserts. For Emma, being able to express her sexuality in a way that feels true to herself is more important than conforming to traditional labels, and she encourages others to be more open-minded and accepting of diverse sexual identities.

The Hope for Future Acceptance

Looking to the future, Emma hopes that being abrosexual will eventually be seen as a normal and valid sexual identity. Just as other sexual orientations like bisexuality and homosexuality are gaining more recognition, she wishes for abrosexuality to be accepted in the same way. “Eventually, I hope that abrosexuality will be seen as normal, just another identity that someone might have,” she explains. While she acknowledges that some people may view her identity as merely “on trend” or confusing, Emma remains optimistic that society will grow to understand and respect this fluid form of attraction. Her ultimate goal is to live in a world where people are free to define their sexuality without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.

Fostering Respectful Dialogue

The key to creating an environment of acceptance for all sexual identities is fostering open and respectful dialogue. Emma’s experience highlights the importance of listening with empathy and respect when someone shares their identity. While misunderstandings are inevitable, Emma emphasizes the need for others to approach such conversations with curiosity and a willingness to learn. “I’m happy to say that the rest of my friends and family have been very supportive of my identity, and have strived to learn more,” she writes. This support is crucial not only for personal growth but also for the advancement of societal understanding. As more people learn about identities like being abrosexual, the hope is that these conversations will become more common and less stigmatized.

Conclusion: Embracing Fluidity in a Changing World

Emma Flint’s journey is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and the importance of embracing one’s authentic identity. While she faced challenges in explaining her sexuality, the support she received from those who listened with respect has been invaluable. Her story serves as a reminder that sexual identity can be fluid and that people should not feel pressured to conform to societal norms. As society continues to evolve, there is hope that more people will be able to express their sexual identities freely. Whether they identify as abrosexual or any other label that feels true to them. In the end, as Emma wisely states, “I’m no longer nervous about my sexuality because it makes sense to me, and in the end. That’s all that really matters.”

Man Ate a Slug After Being Dared by His Friends Leading to a Tragic End

In 2018, a young man passed away after a dare from his friends turned life-threatening. The initial dare, which was to eat a slug, took place ten years prior, shedding some light on the dangers of parasites associated with slugs.

In 2010, 19-year-old Sam Ballard from Sydney, Australia, was blowing off some steam with his friends. They were enjoying a bottle of wine, when things took a strange turn. “We were sitting, having a bit of a red wine appreciation night, trying to act as grown-ups and a slug came crawling across,” recalls Sam’s friend Jimmy. “The conversation came, ‘should I eat it?’ [and] off Sam went.”

Although in some cases, eating slugs results in nothing more than an upset stomach, that wasn’t the case for Ballard. Sadly, his encounter would leave him with detrimental and life-changing consequences. The promising Rugby player would lose his ability to walk, let alone pursue his passion. Instead, Ballard underwent a series of complications over a decade, ultimately leading to the end of his life.

Sam became infected with a parasite known as rat lungworm; the most common parasite associated with slugs. Initially, his symptoms were severe weakness and pain throughout his legs. However, it soon became apparent that his health was deeply at risk. Eventually, he contracted meningitis and then went into a coma for 420 days.

Ballard finally came to, but learned that his life would never be the same. The parasite often associated with slugs, had caused an infection. In time, spreading to his brain and causing paralysis. He would no longer be able to walk but even everyday tasks like using the restroom or eating would prove impossible without assistance. As such, his loving mom Katie Ballard cared for him day after day. He was in need of 24-hour care until 2018, when he tragically passed away at 29. He passed with his friends and family close by and told his mom he loved just before his death.

Avoiding the Same Fate

Incredibly, Katie doesn’t blame his friends for the mishap and seemingly understands that friends sometimes encourage each other to partake in “peculiar acts.“. Sam’s story is one that will likely stick with his friends forever. Luckily, in many cases, this kind of thing is avoidable. Most easily by not eating or licking slugs, even for the sake of fulfilling a dare. Secondly, should you come into contact with slugs, avoid touching your face and most importantly your mouth. Moreover, prioritize washing your hands thoroughly and as soon as possible. Another easy way to avoid parasitic slugs is to know a little about them, including that range in size but can be small enough to hide in produce.

Therefore, avoiding any raw or undercooked mollusks, as well as double checking fruits and vegetables, can also help minimize the risk of Rat lungworm, and other diseases associated with slugs. Some other examples include angiostrongyliasis, paragonimiasis, and fascioliasis. Furthermore, the parasitic diseases carried by slugs have a severe and negative impact on major organs including the brain, biliary tract, and intestines. In some cases, they can also cause, in addition to death, an overactive immune system and infertility.

Understanding the Culprit

Rat lungworm has another, less common name, AC infection, which, according to the CDC, is “the most common infectious cause of eosinophilic meningitis. This type of meningitis affects white blood cells. According to the CDC, there are five types of meningitis, with parasitic meningitis less common than bacterial or viral meningitis. Rat lungworm also undergoes a life cycle, this is as obscene as it fascinating. Prior to infecting slugs and other mollusks, the rat lungworm is transmitted through rodents, hence the name. Rodents carry the adult worm, passing immature worms through their digestive tract. Next, the mollusks eat the rodent droppings and become infected. Lastly, humans or other animals become infected from coming into contact with the slug or its slime trail.

The Subtle Symptom Of Deadly Heart Failure You Might Spot In Bed

Dr Rosie Godeseth urged people to be attentive to potential health concerns when they lay down to rest, as certain symptoms may show up during this time.
A doctor has urged everyone to stay alert to the signs of heart failure, a serious condition that often goes unnoticed, especially a symptom that could become noticeable while you’re lying in bed.

This life-threatening condition is becoming increasingly common across the UK. Currently, an estimated 920,000 people are living with heart failure, and around 200,000 new cases emerge each year.

The NHS emphasizes that these symptoms may develop either suddenly or gradually over weeks or months. However, regardless of the timeframe, receiving a quick diagnosis can make a critical difference.

What exactly is heart failure?

For those who may not be familiar with it, heart failure happens when the heart, the main powerhouse of the circulatory system, cannot pump blood effectively throughout the body. Typically, this issue occurs because the heart muscle has weakened or become too stiff, leaving it in need of extra support.

This chronic condition often gets progressively worse with time, eventually leading to severe limitations in a person’s daily life. The NHS even warns that it can ultimately be fatal in many cases.

This is why it’s so crucial to recognize the symptoms as early as possible. While heart failure has no cure, appropriate treatment can allow someone to manage their condition and symptoms for many years.

Beyond the immediate effects, heart failure can lead to dangerous complications, including blood clots, irregular heartbeats, organ damage, and even cardiac arrest.

Being aware of the warning signs can give you the advantage of time, which can be incredibly valuable for treatment.

The signs and symptoms of heart failure
According to Dr. Rosie Godeseth, people with heart failure report a range of symptoms, but certain signs frequently show up in patients.

One common symptom, which many notice only while lying down, often goes unrecognized. So, paying attention to any unusual feelings when you lay your head on the pillow could be key.

Speaking with The Sun, the cardiologist and Associate Medical Director at Vitality Health noted: “Sometimes people will experience fluid buildup in the lungs which can make it hard to breathe when lying down.”

“If you find yourself having to be propped up on pillows while you sleep or are waking up short of breath, then book an appointment to see a doctor who may recommend undergoing a sleep study or heart function tests.”

Therefore, if you find it hard to breathe comfortably when lying flat and end up needing extra pillows to prop yourself up, it may be a sign that you should see your GP.

Look out for swollen ankles and legs
Additionally, be mindful of swelling in the ankles and legs—or even in the thighs, groin, or abdomen—as these could also indicate heart failure.

This swelling, medically known as oedema, results from your heart’s struggle to effectively circulate blood throughout the body, which can cause fluid to build up.

“It’s important to speak to a doctor if swelling persists or is accompanied by other symptoms like dizziness and shortness of breath,” Dr. Godeseth advised.

Other potential indicators of heart failure include a persistent cough, wheezing, and a “bubbling” sensation in the chest.
This cough is often called a “cardiac cough” and generally stems from fluid buildup in the lungs, as explained by the health expert.

The doctor continued: “It’s important to speak to a doctor if you have had a cough for more than three weeks, especially if any mucus produced is pink or blood-tinged.”

A sudden gain in weight can also serve as a warning sign of heart failure, as the body tends to retain extra fluid and salt when the heart isn’t functioning at its best.
Dr. Godeseth elaborated: “When the heart isn’t effectively pumping, it can lead to reduced blood flow in the kidneys. These organs regulate fluid and sodium balance, so they respond to the reduced blood flow by retaining fluid and sodium. This fluid accumulates in the body’s tissues, particularly the lower limbs, abdomen and sometimes even the lungs.”

Lifestyle changes are key in avoiding heart failure early on
Dr. Godeseth believes that, because heart failure primarily affects older individuals, many in the UK may feel they don’t need to be concerned. However, she suggests that making significant lifestyle adjustments now can yield substantial health benefits later on.

The doctor emphasized that maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet, staying active, and quitting smoking can significantly reduce the risk of heart failure.

She added: “It’s really important not to assume heart health is something that should only be considered, or focused on, once you’re older as the actions we make today go a huge way in preventing illness in the future. In fact, 80 percent of heart disease cases and strokes are preventable.”
