Man who won $197,000,000 jackpot sues lottery by claiming one detail means he’s entitled to twice the amount

The lawsuit was filed in the courts earlier this month

A man who won a whopping $197 million on the Mega Millions is suing the lottery by claiming one detail means he should be walking away with double the amount of money.

Back in June, Faramarz Lahijani publicly came forward to claim his lottery winnings of $197.5 million (to be exact), after purchasing a lucky ticket at a gas station on Ventura Blvd in Encino, California.

Despite claiming such a massive prize, Lahijani is suing the lottery as he claims to have purchased another ticket from the gas station, a winning ticket he lost.

Last week, the lawsuit was officially filed against California Lottery, as the lottery winner hopes to extend his winnings close to $400 million.

Lahijani filed the suit on December 6, a mere hours before the deadline to claim the winnings from the missing ticket had been reached.

The suit, according to the Patch, states: “By virtue of his having timely submitted the first matching ticket, plaintiff is entitled to the entirety of the jackpot.”

The numbers 21, 26, 53, 66, 70, and gold Mega Ball 13 were picked by Lahijani’s children according to the man himself, the same digits he claims to have been using for decades.

Many will ask how the same numbers could be played twice at the same store – something lottery officials have had to explain in the past.

Carolyn Becker, a California Lottery spokesperson, said: “While this is incredibly unusual and interesting, it’s not unheard of.

“There are any number of explanations; perhaps one person wanted to try their luck on two different rows for whatever reason, or maybe a couple of buddies wanted to try their chances with the same exact numbers. We won’t know exactly how this happened until the prize is claimed.”

Those who take part in the Mega Millions have a one in 302,575,350 chance of winning the life-changing jackpot, so for one to win the jackpot twice really is unheard of.

From a 2023 press release, Becker may have provided an indication as to what may be happening with this mysterious case.

She added: “Only legitimate winners know the answers to some of our most important questions during the standard vetting process; it’s one of the ways we determine that the person who claims the prize is, in fact, the rightful winner.”

While Lahijani may be hoping for more dollars, the gas station is more than happy with the $1.9 million+ they have bagged for selling the tickets.

Social media users were shocked by the appearance of the mega-rich former CEO, but all agreed on one thing

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has raised eyebrows after being photographed in Kenya recently, with social media users all commenting the same thing about his…unusual dress sense.

The social media guru is reported to be worth an eye-watering $5,700,000,000 (yes, you read that amount of zeros correctly), but onlookers were surprised by his choice of fit.

Jack was pictured smiling for the camera, some might say ‘casually dressed’, with a baseball cap and a long, greying beard.

Commenters were all quick to point out how much the former Twitter boss had changed from his days at the social media giant, where he scrubbed up a bit more.

You might assume that he’d be head to toe in designer garms, but the t-shirt he’s wearing is inspired by the iconic Nirvana smiley.

The t-shirt in question has been reworked to give a nod to the inventor of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Instead of costing hundreds of dollars as you might expect, the shirt actually costs around $40, so you too can dress like a billionaire even if your bank account doesn’t show it.

Many commenters are marvelling at the fact that so many billionaires choose to dress simply instead.

“If I were a billionaire, I would look like a hobo. Why dress yourself when you don’t have to work?” pointed out one redditor.

“Now that’s the look of a programmer who doesn’t need a job,” joked another.

“I wonder if he hangs out with MySpace Tom? They both have many, many thousands of green people from history times and an uncluttered schedule,” someone queried, while another is holding on to a fantasy life: “I dream of that “Right, that’s money sorted, let’s go and do sh*t” lifestyle.

Another redditor made a very good point: “Great example of “do you want to be rich, or look rich”

Why waste time curating a wardrobe when you don’t need to impress anyone?

The look has been dubbed ‘mogul style’ in some quarters, with many fashion experts also noting the trend to dress like you’re in a different tax bracket entirely.

Some thank Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg for bringing the trend to the public eye, as he’s a big fan of hoodies and jeans.

Facebook engineer Carlos Bueno wrote a blogpost called Inside the Mirrortocracy, and he said dressing up is frowned upon in tech circles: “What wearing a suit really indicates is – I am not making this up – non-conformity, one of the gravest of sins.”

Jeff Bezos was also recently photographed in a skin-tight polo and jeans, and while he’s not quite rocking the beach-friendly look of Jack Dorsey, it’s still a world away from the suits and ties we used to see him in.

They say to dress for the job you want, so maybe we should all be adopting the t-shirts and sandals look.

Just don’t blame us if HR don’t like it…

The pair have never been the best of friends…

Elon Musk has warned Bill Gates could go bankrupt in the future if Tesla meets one condition.

They are two of the most powerful and richest men on the planet, but they often don’t seen eye to eye.

Back in April 2022, Musk said he refused a philanthropy request from Gates over the stock shorting incident, which was revealed by screenshots of a text exchange between the pair.

The Tesla CEO asked Gates if he still had a ‘half billion dollar short position against Tesla’, to which the Microsoft founder replied: “Sorry to say I haven’t closed it yet […] I would like to discuss philanthropy possibilities.”

Musk says he couldn’t take Gates’ climate change philanthropy ‘seriously’ when he has a ‘massive short position against Tesla, the company doing the most to solve climate change’.

There were understandably questions on if the screenshots were real, to which Musk replied: “Yeah, but I didn’t leak it to NYT. They must have got it through friends of friends. I heard from multiple people at TED that Gates still had half billion short against Tesla, which is why I asked him, so it’s not exactly top secret.”

Gates had since apologised to Musk over the incident, though their relationship has seemingly never recovered from that situation.

Now, the Twitter (X) owner has claimed he could make Gates bankrupt if the Tesla stock surges 200 per cent.

The comment from Musk came after a Twitter user posted a screenshot of a tweet the billionaire posted on his social media platform in 2023.

It reads: “Just so that the public understands: Taking out a short position against Tesla, as Gates did, results in the highest return only if a company goes bankrupt!

“Gates placed a massive bet on Tesla dying when our company was at one of its weakest moments several years ago. Such a big short position also drives the stock down for everyday investors.

“To the best of my knowledge, Gates *still* has that massive bet against Tesla on the table. Someone should ask him if he does.

“The lack of self-awareness and hypocrisy of Gates who had the nerve to ask me to donate to his mostly window-dressing environmental causes, while simultaneously aiming to make $500M from Tesla’s demise, boggles the mind…”

Musk then added: “If Tesla does become the world’s most valuable company by far, that short position will bankrupt even Bill Gates.”

If Tesla’s stock was to surge by 200 per cent, it would make the car giant the most valuable company in the world, overtaking Apple.

You could get some extra cash in the bank ahead of Christmas

While the days of physically renting out a copy of your favorite flick for the weekend are long gone, there’s some good news for avid movie collectors.

Danny Boyle’s 2002 zombie apocalypse flick 28 Days Later is considered a horror masterpiece – but you’d struggle if you tried to go and watch it now.

The film’s not available on Netflix or any other streamers – although depending on your country, you might be able to catch it on Amazon’s Prime Video.

Other than that, unless you own a physical copy, you’re out of luck.

Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, hence why it’s not available on streaming and why Blu-Ray discs are no longer in production.

Sony has since acquired the rights to the first movie to help produce 28 Years Later.

As the first movie is so rare, DVD and Blu-Ray disks are now selling for pretty large amounts of money online.

TikToker @unkn0wns0ldier11 pointed out that someone over in the US was able to sell their copy for $110 because there’s no supply but demand still exists.

And at the time of writing, there are a number of DVDs being listed on resale site eBay for as high as $195, while over on Amazon, Blu-Rays are being sold for $144.99.

How’s that for a cash boost in the run-up to Christmas?

But a quiet announcement from Sony could potentially see these physical copies tank in value.

Interest around the movie franchise spiked after a trailer for the upcoming 28 Years Later follow-up was released earlier this week.

Fans on social media have since spotted that 28 Days Later is set to release on digital, with an exact date yet to be announced.

This means the sought-after movie will be available to purchase online, potentially via the likes of Prime, AppleTV or even GooglePlay. With a bit of luck, it could also join one of the streaming services.

And this is where DVD collectors have to act fast.

If anyone can buy and watch 28 Days Later, then of course, demand for the physical copies will dwindle, making the current versions in circulation less valuable.

There’s also a small chance, then, that physical copies of the movie could be released, further degrading the original DVD and Blu-Ray’s worth.

So, if you own a copy and want to earn a few extra bucks, now’s your time to sell up.

Outrage at bizarre reason two students were jailed for refusing to pay $16.35 tip at restaurant

Outrage at bizarre reason two students were jailed for refusing to pay $16.35 tip at restaurant

They only paid $73.87 of their $90.22 restaurant bill

It’s often a topic of debate whether you should have to pay a service charge or not.

From the amount you should be tipping to whether it should be mandatory or not, I don’t think tipping will ever not a cause of discussion.

One waitress who caused quite a stir online last year was one in New York who hit out at European tourists only tipping 10 percent.

The server in question took to Twitter to express her grievances about only being tipped $70 from a $700 bill, adding that she ‘f**king hates Europeans sometimes’.

Her tweet left people divided at the time, but many argued that a $70 tip was actually pretty good.

While leaving a tip at a restaurant isn’t thought to have been mandatory, one couple who refused to pay for such a service landed themselves in handcuffs.

In 2009, college students John Wagner and Leslie Pope visited Lehigh Pub in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and refused to pay a $16 gratuity because they felt like the service they received wasn’t up to scratch.

They still paid for their food, however – even though it reportedly took an hour to arrive.

Elsewhere, Pope claimed she had to go to the bar to get her drink refilled and pick up her own silverware, NBC 10 Philadelphia reported at the time.

Speaking about the moment their order arrived, she told the news outlet: “At this point I became very annoyed because I had already gone up to the bar myself to have my soda refilled because the waitress never came back.”

Pope and Wagner were part of a party of six, and when the bill came they paid for food, drinks, and tax but refused to pay the tip with the poor service they received in mind.

They only paid $73.87 of the $90.22 bill.

Ultimately, the police were called and they were charged with theft since the gratuity was part of their actual bill.

Within a few days, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli encouraged Bethlehem police to drop the charges Wagner and Pope were facing.

“It would not be the kind of case that should be processed criminally, Morganelli told The Express Times.

“It was one of those matters that should be processed civilly.”

Fast forward to today and it appears as if the Lehigh Pub is no longer in business.

As per Yelp, the establishment is permanently closed.

It had an overall rating of one out of five stars, based on 55 reviews on the site.

Jim Carrey admits he’s come out of acting retirement because he ‘needs the money’

A couple of years ago, Carrey revealed he would be retiring after an impressive career spanning decades

Jim Carrey has said he’s had to come out of retirement because he ‘needs the money’.

In 2022, it was revealed that Carrey would be retiring after an impressive career spanning decades.

From Ace Ventura: Pet Detective to Dumb and DumberThe Mask and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Carrey is largely known for his comedic roles.

However, he also showed off his acting chops for more dramatic films, like The Truman ShowEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Number 23.

While he said that he would return under very special conditions – if the script is delivered by angels and ‘written in gold ink’, to be precise – it seems Carrey has had a change of heart.

And there’s a pretty straightforward reason why.

In an interview with Kit Kuvir for Access Hollywood, Carrey previously explained that he was planning on retiring after finishing the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

When told by Kuvir that Dolly Parton wanted him to play her musical partner in a biopic, the actor responded: “That’s great. But I’m retiring. I’m saying this quite seriously.

“Unless, of course, the angels suddenly bring me some script written in golden ink, and I realize that it is very important for people to see it, then maybe I will come back.”

He added: “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like, and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.’

Well, earlier this year, it was announced that Carrey would be reprising his role as Dr Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The second movie ended with Robotnik falling from a gigantic robot, with audiences left wondering if he had survived the fall.

It is the third instalment in the franchise, joining Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – which collectively made $870.8 million at the box office.

So, surely it must have been the script Carrey was referring to? Well, not quite as when speaking to an AP Entertainment reporter on the red carpet, he was asked about what he originally said about his retirement plans, with the actor admitting he may have exaggerated.

“That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah,” Carrey joked.

“I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”

As well as Carrey, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 also stars Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’ Shaughnessey and Idris Elba as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, while Keanu Reeves joins the cast as Shadow.

The movie is set for release in the US on December 20, 2024.

John David Battaglia brutally murdered his own two daughters in 2001

Warning: This article contains details some readers may find upsetting

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: Hearing your children in distress and not being able to do anything about it.

This very terror became a reality for one mom in 2001 after her estranged husband put their two daughters on the phone on loudspeaker before he murdered them in cold blood.

John Battaglia and Mary Jean Pearle had divorced a year earlier, and they shared two daughters together: 9-year-old Faith and 6-year-old Liberty.

On May 2, 2001, Mary Jean received a phone call from ex-husband John, which would destroy her life forever.

Earlier that day, she had dropped the two little girls off with their father as he had promised to take them for dinner at the mall. Instead, Battaglia took the girls to his apartment in Adam Hats Lofts, Deep Ellum in Dallas, Texas, where he phoned Mary Jean and forced her to listen to her terrified daughters.

He had learned earlier that there was a warrant out for his arrest for harassing his ex-wife, so he made little Faith ask her mom: “Why do you want Daddy to go to jail?”.

The little girl was then heard screaming: “No, Daddy! Please don’t! Don’t do it!”

Mary Jane begged her daughters to run, but it was too late, and she heard Battaglia fatally shooting the girls multiple times.

He then said “Merry f**king Christmas” to Mary Jean, in just one of his many taunts to her.

It is believed he was referencing an incident which took place at Christmas back in 1999, where he assaulted Mary Jean and she went to the police about, leading to their divorce.

A terrified Mary hung up and called 911 for help.

Battaglia then called back and left a voicemail on the answering machine, saying: “Hi, girls. I just want to tell you how very, very brave you were, and I hope you are resting in a better place now. I wish that you had nothing to do with your mother. She’s evil and vicious and stupid!”

“Goodnight, my little babies,” he went on. “You were very brave girls.”

After murdering his daughters, Battaglia went out to a bar with his girlfriend before going to a tattoo parlour, getting two roses inked dedicated to the children he just killed.

It took jurors just 20 minutes to find him guilty, and he was sentenced to death in 2002.

The killer was eventually executed in 2018, despite several pushbacks from his legal team who questioned his sanity. His legal team submitted a new appeal the morning that he died, saying that the state’s last two executions had gone wrong.

The appeal was unsuccessful, with the U.S. Supreme Court issuing a final denial at around 9pm.

Battaglia never expressed remorse for the murders and still continued to blame his ex-wife. Even as he was facing death, he found time to torment the grieving mother.

Asked if he had any last words, Battaglia said no, the Dallas Morning News reports, but he then changed his mind, saying: “Well, hi Mary Jean,” who stood behind the glass pane watching the execution.

“See y’all later. Go ahead please,” he added.

He was then injected with a lethal dose of pentobarbital 9:18 p.m. It took twenty-two minutes for him to be pronounced dead.

A woman who went missing while traveling to ‘bucket list’ vacation has been found safe

A woman who vanished while on vacation has been ‘found safe and well’, her family have announced.

Hannah Kobayashi had been traveling from her home in Maui, Hawaii, to get a connecting flight to New York via Los Angeles in November, but never boarded her flight at LAX.

This caused a stir amongst her family who eventually travelled to the city to look for her before placing a missing person’s report.

Los Angeles Police previously confirmed that they had spotted Kobayashi on video surveillance.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said: “As the family is aware, late yesterday after traveling to the US-Mexico border we reviewed video surveillance from US Customs and Border Protection which clearly shows Kobayashi crossing United States border on foot into Mexico.”

In an update provided on Wednesday (December 11), Kobayashi’s family have issued a statement.

“We are incredibly relieved and grateful Hannah has been found safe,” the statement shared with the Mail Online reads.

It remains unclear at this stage where Kobayashi has been and what she’s been doing for the best part of a month.

Police previously gave a rundown of Kobayashi’s disappearance, though that caused quite the stir with the family.

McDonnell added: “On November 8, 23 year-old Hannah Kobayashi missed her connecting flight from LAX to New York which the investigation determined was intentional.

“Over the next few days she maintained contact with her family and was active on Instagram. However, the family last heard from Hannah on November 11 after receiving concerning text messages and losing further contact her family traveled to LA on November 13 and filed a missing person report.”

“On November 15, our missing person’s unit assumed investigative responsibility, detectives have been diligently reviewing video surveillance and employing various investigative technique to locate Hannah, while her family has continued their personal search efforts.

“Tragically on November 24, during the search for his daughter, Hannah’s father Ryan Kobayashi was found deceased. Preliminary findings indicate his death was by suicide.”

During their investigation, police also dismissed speculation Kobayashi was involved in any type of criminal activity.

“To date the investigation has not uncovered any evidence that Kobayashi is being trafficked or is the victim of foul play. She is also not a suspect in any criminal activity,” police added.

“She has a right to her privacy, and we respect her choices but we also understand that the concern her loved ones feel for her.”

Gypsy Rose Blanchard details what she heard in her mom’s final moments as boyfriend murdered her

Gypsy Rose opened up about the horrifying moment her mom was murdered in her memoir, My Time To Stand

While Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s controversial story is well known across the globe, she has now talked about her mother’s final moments in her own words.

There’s been a lot of speculation over the last decade since Gypsy Rose snuck her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn into her home to murder her mother, Clauddine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard.

It took place on the night of June 10, 2015, when Gypsy and Nicholas decided to carry out their cruel plan to take Dee Dee’s life – who was believed to have had a mental illness called Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which saw her induce multiple illnesses in Gypsy throughout her childhood.

After letting Nicholas into her home, Gypsy claims in her new memoirMy Time to Stand, that she took three Vicodin and went into the bathroom, all the while knowing her mom was about to be murdered.

Gypsy, now 33, wrote: “I went to the bathroom, sat on the floor and covered my ears. Except I heard. I heard everything.”

“Nick entered the room soundlessly because there was no bedroom door, so when she finally woke up it must have been because he was standing over her, not because of any noise,” she recalled. “She was startled.”

Despite being in the bathroom, Gypsy writes about ‘hearing her as if her voice was muffled’ and that she heard Dee Dee ask ‘Who are you?’

She goes on: “I just heard the screaming and then I lay in the fetal position with my hands pressed hard over my ears. But I could still hear things.”

Gypsy then said she thought she heard a ‘pause’ in her boyfriend’s brutal stabbing, and that it “sounded like she may have had a pool of blood in her mouth because I heard her say with a gargle, ‘Gypsy. Gypsy’.”

Instead of helping her mom or trying to stop Nicholas from killing her, she wrote how she ‘stayed very, very still. I was trying to focus on my breathing’. “There weren’t thoughts going through my head at all,” she penned. “It was like I was locked inside a cloud, with the out-of-reach Earth spinning below me.

“Nothing was real. I was a simulation, as I focused on taking my next breath, and the next. And then I heard one sharp, ‘Help me!’.”

Gypsy Rose then wrote that Nicholas had her help to clean him up, before he raped her.

The paid then fled the scene of the crime, leaving Dee Dee’s body in the bedroom, having been stabbed 17 times in the back.

Police records state that before making their escape, the pair also stole more than $4,400 before heading to a motel.

They were arrested and charged in the days following, before Gypsy eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Nicholas was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole, plus 25 years for armed criminal action.

Gypsy was released on parole from prison on December 28, 2023, after serving eight years of her 10-year sentence, and went on to feature in a documentary called Gypsy-Rose: Life After Lock Up.

There was also a drama series based on the murder, called The Act, and Gypsy Rose said she finally wanted to put things in her own words.

As fans who’ve been following Gypsy’s journey since her release will know, she’s had quite the whirlwind since her release – she’s filed for divorce from her husband Ryan Anderson, and has rekindled a romance with ex-fiancé Ken Urker. The pair are now expecting their first child.

Facebook and Instagram have just gone down for everyone all over the world

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are currently down for many

In what seems to be a ‘once every three months’ occurrence at this point, Facebook and Instagram have gone down for thousands of users across the world.

The internet has descended into chaos over the past hour as three of the biggest social media sites are not operational for many.

According to DownDetector, over 23,000 people reported issues with Facebook at around 1pm ET on Wednesday (December 11).

Some users have reported being hit with an error message reading, ‘We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can’ when they try and access the Meta series.

Meta said in a statement: “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”

The last major outage of the company’s sites happened back in March, with users being locked out of their Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp accounts.

A company spokesperson said at the time: “We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

Andy Stone, who works in communications at Meta, posted a comment on his account on Twitter acknowledging that services for Meta were down.

He wrote: “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”

Musk, as you’d probably expect, took to Twitter (X) at the time, joking: “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working.”

Meta later clarified that it was ‘recovering from an earlier outage impacting Facebook Login, and services are in the process of being restored’.

With the current outage, many have flocked to Twitter, one of the few social media sites up and running right now, to see if it’s their crappy internet or the fact Meta is actually down.
