Adrien Brody addresses backlash over moment he controversially kissed Halle Berry on stage at Oscars

The Brutalist star has spoken out about the controversial kiss which took place 22 years ago

Adrien Brody has spoken out about how he controversially kissed Halle Berry on stage at the Oscars more than two decades ago.

The actor, 51, caused quite the stir back in 2003 when he pulled the Catwoman star into a lip lock while collecting his award for Best Actor.

Brody somewhat overshadowed his own big moment with the stunt, as his smooch with Berry was the talk of the town rather than the fact he’d won the coveted category.

Aged 29, he became the youngest person ever to win the Best Actor award thanks to his harrowing role as Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist.

It was well deserved – as the New Yorker lost 30lbs, gave up his apartment, ditched his car and took piano lessons for four hours a day to perfect his character.

But before bursting into a heartfelt speech about Roman Polanski’s WW2 film, Brody appeared to briefly overlook his Oscar win in favour of making a beeline straight for Berry.

The Darjeeling Limited actor excitedly strutted up on stage after beating the likes of Michael Caine, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day Lewis and Nicolas Cage for Best Actor.

However, instead of grabbing the statuette from Berry and bursting into celebration, Brody pulled her into an intense embrace in front of the star-studded audience.

The former model – who was 37 at the time – was presenting the gong as she had scooping Best Actress for Monster’s Ball in 2002, and appeared to be visibly stunned by the snog.

As he began his speech at the podium, Brody turned to address her as he joked: “I bet they didn’t tell you that was in the gift bag.”

The actor also reenacted the on stage kiss with Queen Latifah at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, which took place just two months later.

Kissing someone without their consent is obviously a huge no-no, and Brody has received a lot of backlash for the stunt in recent years, and now, he’s addressed the fallout in a new interview with Variety.

“We live in a very conscious time, which is a wonderful thing,” the Oscar winner – who also came under fire for a controversial Saturday Night Live skit in 2003 – said.

“And nothing that I ever do or have done or would’ve done is ever done with the intention of making anyone feel bad.”

Berry herself previously opened up about the shocking moment during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live in 2017.

She said: “I was like, ‘What the f**k is happening right now?’ That is what was going through my mind.”

Berry admitted she gave Brody something of a pass, as she understood the surreal feeling he was experiencing after winning Best Actor.

“I was there the year before and I know the feeling of being out of your body,” she added. “I just f**king went with it.”

Brody did tell the crowd at the 2003 Oscar’s that he almost didn’t ‘recognise his own name’ when it was read out, which somewhat supports Berry’s suggestion that he was very nervous.

Despite the controversy surrounding their kiss 22 years ago, there doesn’t appear to be any bad blood between the pair these days.

In fact, Berry recently heaped praise on the actor when he announced that he has been nominated for Best Actor once again at this year’s Oscars.

In an Instagram post, Brody explained he was up for the gong thanks to his role in The Brutalist, where he stars as Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor László Tóth.

He wrote: “Thank you to The Golden Globes voters for this truly extraordinary honour. My family and I will never forget this magical moment.

“And to @thombrowne for making me look like a winner on this special night @goldenglobes #2025.

Berry then commented: “Congratulations my friend. You are truly one of one!”

Let’s just hope she isn’t asked to dust off her presenting skills to announce this year’s Best Actor on 3 March, eh?

Margot Robbie almost quit acting after 'awful' experience following Wolf of Wall Street

The actress has spoken out about her experience

Margot Robbie has revealed that she almost quit acting after her ‘awful’ experience with fame following her success in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

It’s kind of hard now to imagine Hollywood without Margot Robbie.

After starring in box office sensation Barbie, leading the 2018 Oscar race for I, Tonya, and delighting fans with her portrayal of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, it’s safe to say that she’s earned her reputation as a versatile and successful actress.

However, after starring in Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated smash hit The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie nearly packed in the fame game because of her experience with her newfound fame.

Although Robbie has been acting since her stint on Australian soap Neighbours, the 2013 flick really catapulted her into the spotlight.

In case you haven’t seen it, The Wolf of Wall Street stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill and follows the true story of Jordan Belfort, who takes a hit after the stock market crashes. Showing us the fast-paced, high energy lifestyle of the stock market, we watch Belfort’s life unravel and the demise of his relationship with Naomi Lapaglia (Robbie).

And although the film put a then-22-year-old Robbie on the map, the Focus actress opened up in a interview with Vanity Fair a few years back about her experience with the sudden interest in her.

“Something was happening in those early stages and it was all pretty awful.

“I remember saying to my mum, ‘I don’t think I want to do this.’ And she just looked at me, completely straight-faced, and was like, ‘Darling, I think it’s too late not to.’ That’s when I realised the only way was forward.”

As any actress in the spotlight will tell you, learning how to navigate the media frenzy is no easy feat.

When asked how she did it, Robbie remarked: “I know how to go through airports, and now I know who’s trying to fuck me over in what ways.

“If my mom dies in a car accident because you wanted a photo of me going in the grocery shop, or you knock my nephew off a bike — for what? For a photo? It’s dangerous but still weirdly nothing feels like it changes.”

She went on to say: “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story, which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Stephen A. Smith makes shocking remark to Serena Williams' husband after Super Bowl halftime controversy

Legendary sports TV personality Stephen A. Smith has given his take on Serena Williams’ choice to crip walk to ‘Not Like Us’

Sports TV host Stephen A. Smith has given us his take on Serena Williams’ ‘Crip Walk’ during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Kendrick Lamar stole the headlines on Sunday night, giving the millions watching a show to remember.

The Los Angeles rapper had Samuel L. Jackson appear as Uncle Sam, while artist SZA joined him for a couple of songs during the performance, but another celebrity guest also made an appearance on stage – Serena Williams.

It’s well known that Lamar and Drake have been beefing since last summer, though the former arguably won with the song of the summer, ‘Not Like Us’, a diss track towards the Canadian rapper.

But as Lamar was rapping the popular tune, the tennis legend could be seen doing a ‘Crip Walk’ on the stage.

Williams, who reportedly dated Drake in 2011, was met with controversy for the move, which is associated with an LA gang.

While Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, defended her on social media, some members of the public didn’t approve of the move.

One of these people was popular sports personality, Stephen A. Smith.

Known for his loud takes on sports, he can occasionally chip in with his opinions on current affairs, even suggesting that he ‘might entertain’ running for President in 2028 for the Democratic party – though he later clarified that he had no plans to run (via Fox News).

Now, he’s given his thoughts about William’s appearance at the Super Bowl.

Smith spoke on ESPN’s First Take about Williams’ decision to be a part of the song which dissed her alleged ex, and how she ‘Crip Walked’ on stage.

Talking about the incident on Monday morning (10 February), he said: “You could say give her props. If I’m your husband, why are you up there trolling your ex? If I’m married and my wife is going to join trolling her ex, go back to his a**, ’cause clearly you don’t belong with me.

“What you worried about him for and you’re with me? Bye. Bye.”

However, Ryan Clark defended the tennis legend, saying: “If you’re with Serena Williams you’re going to be a kept man anyway.”

Williams was previously criticised for doing the dance back at the 2012 Olympics after beating Maria Sharapova.

While one users online said they couldn’t believe she had ‘the audacity’ to perform the dance move, her loved ones have defended her.

Fellow tennis legend and sister Venus Williams hyped her up on her Instagram Story, writing: “Lil sis killing it”, also adding: “You did that!!!”

Ohanian previously wrote on Instagram: “Some of y’all have no idea how criticised Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago, and it shows. This is bigger than the music.”

Referencing past criticism, Serena herself responded in a Twitter video, saying: “Man I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon, I would’ve been fined.”

Steve Jobs asked senior Apple employee one question ‘almost every day’ that explains why he was so successful

Steve Jobs asked senior Apple employee one question 'almost every day' that explains why he was so successful

The former Apple CEO would ask a high ranking employee this question to see if he was being productive

Steve Jobs is still one of the most iconic figures in the technology industry, after he helped Apple climb to the top of the tree.

The American tech company is among the most popular brands in the world, and it shows, as almost everyone you know has an iPhone.

Jobs is known for his unorthodox interview methods as well, with the ‘beer method’ one of the tasks under his sleeve when he looked to hire a new employee.

But there were other quirks about the former CEO of Apple, who passed away in October 2011.

Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design and chief design officer at the time, Jony Ive, revealed that there was one question that Jobs would ask him every day.

He would ask: “How many times did you say no today?”

This is because he believed that saying no would ‘create focus’, and it follows the same thinking of other successful men of the time.

American investor Warren Buffett once compared ‘successful’ people to ‘really successful’ people with the quote: “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.”

Jobs thought that saying no allowed you to be serious and productive, and above all, increase output.

The idea of getting a lot done without getting the one or two most important tasks done would worry Jobs, as he believed that you should finish what you start before anything else.

It’s all unorthodox to say the least, but geniuses often think differently to the majority – this is the man that brought us the iPhone, after all.

He would ensure that his products would be the best in the industry too, by hiring the best.

As aforementioned, Jobs would take prospective employees out during an interview in an attempt to relieve some of the pressure.

He would take them for a walk and a beer to have a more relaxed conversation, loosening them up a bit, and asking open-ended questions such as ‘When was the last time you accomplished something?’ to a simple, ‘What did you do last summer?’

While there were no right or wrong answers, Jobs would better understand candidates and their way of thinking.

In the past, he said: “I found that when you get enough A-players together, when you go through the incredible job of finding these A-players, they really like working with each other.

“Because they’ve never had the chance to do it before.”

If you’re wondering whether the beer test works, have a look at how Apple have done in the last 10-15 years.

Fans couldn’t believe what a Super Bowl ring actually contains

This really puts British winners’ medals to shame.

The detail that goes into American sports’ winners rings has been revealed, and it’s left viewers absolutely gobsmacked.

Over the weekend, the Super Bowl took place, and the Philadelphia Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, in a replay of the 2023 fixture.

Super Bowl LIX saw the Lombardi trophy going back to Philadelphia, ruining the Chiefs’, and Travis Kelce’s, dream of a three-peat.

Kendrick Lamar may have stolen headlines on social media for his halftime show, but the match itself still had viewers gripped throughout.

The shock result caught NFL fans off guard, with the Chiefs heavy favourites going into the match-up, as they looked to win three Super Bowls in a row for the first time in history.

Winning players on the Eagles are reportedly set to receive a lump cash sum of $171,000 (£137,000) each for the victory, while losing players will only apparently earn $96,000 (£77,000).

On top of all of this, and different to British sports, all members of the winning team, including staff members, receive a unique ring.

A video of the winners’ ring has gone viral on TikTok recently, with someone showing off a ring from the winning Los Angeles Rams team of 2022.

Rings are made of gold and diamonds, displaying the Super Bowl number in Roman numerals, and are often personalised with the player’s name and jersey number.

It really dwarves the idea of medals, which is what winning teams are treated to across the rest of the world.

The diamonds can also be in the shape of an American football or the Vince Lombardi trophy, while more detailed rings can also feature the team’s conference wins or the final score.

On the outside of the ring, the team’s name and logo can also be seen.

The NFL only pay a fraction of the price of each ring, which can cost anywhere between $30,000 (£24,000) to $50,000 (£40,000).

You do pay for what you get though, as the viral video proved that you can actually open the ring up to reveal a diamond encrusted inside.

The ring splits into two, with once side featuring some pigskin from the football itself, and the other side holding a bit of turf from the field that they played on, which has been stylised to look like a mini American Football field.

Taking to the comments, users were shocked at what was inside, as one said: “Wow, that Super Bowl ring is insane! The detail inside is next level.”

Another added: “Am I the only one here that’s just now finding out Super Bowl rings came apart like that?”

A third pointed out: “I’d be scared the top would fall off,” while others couldn’t believe that some recipients actually choose to sell their rings.

El Salvador’s maximum security prison CECOT doesn’t take it easy on inmates

The ‘world’s worst prison’ have really put the ‘solitary’ in it’s solitary confinement cells, this chilling footage shows.

El Salvador’s maximum security prison CECOT (Centre for the Confinement of Terrorism) has a reputation which precedes itself, but seeing the reality for yourself really is a jolt to the system.

The facility, which was opened in 2023, is one of the largest prisons in the world which currently houses tens of thousands of people accused of having gang affiliations.

President Nayib Bukele, 43, opened CECOT in an effort to stomp out gangs and organised crime in the central American nation, however, human rights groups aren’t a fan of the place.

Miguel Sarre, a former member of the United Nations Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture, previously described the prison as a ‘concrete and steel pit’.

Controversially, US President Donald Trump recently floated the idea of sending foreign citizens who had been convicted in the States there.

Inside, inmates are crammed into endless rows of bare metal bunks – without the luxury of a mattress – while they’re forced to have their heads shaved every five days.

As well as following a host of other strict rules, prisoners aren’t permitted to use cutlery and eat with their hands, while each person locked up has to wear a white t-shirt and shorts during their incarceration.

And if you think that sounds bad, just wait until you hear about CECOT’s solitary confinement.

A handful of journalists have been granted access inside the prison since it opened, including Turkish YouTuber and documentary maker Ruhi Çenet.

In a video documenting his visit to the mega-prison shared earlier this month, the content creator discussed how the ‘entire design’ of CECOT ‘doesn’t just prevent escape, it erases the very idea of it’.

He said: “Those who enter this prison are destined to never leave here. This massive prison is made up of eight separate modules spread over 410 acres of land.

YouTuber Ruhi Çenet gave people a tour of the tiny solitary confinement cell at CECOT (YouTube/Ruhi Cenet)

“Each pair of modules is enclosed by two separate 3-meter-high walls with razor wire. The entire facility is surrounded by a towering 9-meter-high wall with a 3-meter-high electric fence carrying 15,000 volts.

“Nineteen watchtowers are ensuring nothing escapes notice,” he added.

And if there’s one thing that’s sure to kill any dreams of escaping among prisoners, it’s got to be the solitary confinement cell.

Ruhi explained that inmates are put inside the claustrophobic rooms for misbehaving, adding: “He won’t know the time or how much longer he’ll be kept inside for – days or even weeks.

“He sleeps on this concrete bed without ever leaving. They are cut off from the outside world, left alone with nothing but their thoughts.”

A guard accompanying the content creator, who visits ‘hard-to-reach places’ around the globe, explained more about solitary confinement at CECOT.

“If inmates break a rule they can be sent to these isolation cells, according to the legislation,” the prison worker said. “The law gives me the right to keep the prisoners in isolation for up to 15 days.

“These cells have sealed doors,” the guard explained. “Through this grid, I can see them and identify who’s inside.”

Food is also served through this opening, while inmates also have to put their hands through it to be cuffed when they are moved to and from the solitary cell.

It’s pitch black inside of it, as there’s only a single small hole in the ceiling, which serves as the room’s only source of light Ruhi said ‘barely lets the sunshine in.’

The guard continued: “Inside, you don’t even see your hands. So when someone is isolated, it is necessary for them to have something – a book, anything to keep their mind clear. But here they don’t have access to any of that.

“No matter how tough a criminal is, this kind of isolation breaks them. This is necessary for the type of offenders that we have here.”

The guard added: “People who once played God by deciding who would live and who wouldn’t live, [they] deserve the worst punishment. We don’t show them mercy.

“They can ask for forgiveness and may God forgive them. But here, justice must be served for so many victims. It’s the least they deserve.”

Facing up to a fortnight staring at this blank concrete canvas is surely enough to scare the inmates into submission.

Netflix viewers are ‘appalled’ after new doc gives totally new perspective on classic war film

The documentary features interviews with those who were on the front lines

Viewers have been shown a new side to a 2001 war film following the release of a new Netflix documentary – and it’s left some feeling ‘appalled’.

True stories being made into films is a tricky art, with directors and writers having to balance telling a great story with what actually happened.

In the case of war films based on true stories, this is even more accentuated, because you want to root for one side completely – but it isn’t always that simple.

Ewan McGregor is one of the many stars to appear in the film (Columbia Pictures)

Ewan McGregor is one of the many stars to appear in the film (Columbia Pictures)

That is the case for Black Hawk Down, the Ridley Scott film that won two Oscars from four nominations and is considered by many to be one of the best war movies ever.

Netflix’s newest documentary, however, looks at the ‘real’ story behind it, called Surviving Black Hawk Down. The film follows a group of American soldiers who are shot down in Somalia as they try and capture a group of warlords.

The film has an unreal cast too, with Ewan McGregor, Tom Hardy, Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Jason Isaacs, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Orlando Bloom all appearing, with the stars all at varying levels of the fame they now possess.

Black Hawk Down is based on a real military event in which a Black Hawk helicopter flying over Somalia was shot down during the ‘Battle of Mogadishu’.

Netflix’s new documentary looks at both sides of things, including interviews with soldiers who were there. You can watch the trailer here:

The takeaway many are leaving with, however, is that they are ‘appalled’ at realising how Somali people were portrayed in the film, and the contrast to what actually happened.

One viewer tweeted expressed their belief that America had committed war crimes in Somalia, writing: “Just finished watching the black hawk down documentary on Netflix and I’m honestly infuriated and appalled at the sheer audacity of these Americans.

“They committed war crimes, shooting and killing innocent civilians on sight but have the cheek to question the humanity of Somalis?”

While America has never been tried for any war crimes from the Battle of Mogadishu, the documentary led to a great deal of criticism for their actions in the interventionist battle.

One of the interviewees is a Somali photographer 'Five' who captured the conflict (Netflix)

Another said: “I’m watching that Black Hawk Down documentary on Netflix and there are Americans calling the Somalis cruel for how they treated the bodies of the dead American soldiers.

“It’s amazing that their own cruelties to Somalia never occurs to them. That or they just don’t care.”

A third said: “Black Hawk Down just shows how much Americans don’t know how to MIND THEIR OWN F***ING BUSINESS.”

Others praised the film’s alternate perspective on what happened, with one tweeting: “Another Black Hawk Down film but at least I appreciate the Somali perspective this time, Especially through the lenses of the Somali camera man that reported the 1993 incident.”

While another said more docuseries like Surviving Black Hawk Down were needed to ‘help us understand major historical events better’.

The incident was filmed by a young cameraman called Ahmed ‘Five’, who speaks in the doc about filming the famous interrogation video of US pilot Mike Durant.

Surviving Black Hawk Down is on Netflix now.

Fitness enthusiast reveals dramatic changes to his body after eating almost 1,000 eggs in a month

30 eggs a day for 30 days – how hard can it be?

Have you ever wondered how it’s like to consume 900 eggs in the space of a month?

Probably not, but fitness enthusiast Joseph Everett took it upon himself to take the food challenge on, working out to 30 eggs a day for a month.

The content creator decided to test its effects after a bodybuilder claimed that it’s an effective way to build muscle, to the same level as steroid injections.

Everett went out of way to stick with the routine no matter one, even facing health complications along the way.

He uploaded his journey on YouTube, in a video that has accumulated over 784,000 views.

The fitness enthusiast documented his results (YouTube/What I've Learned)

The fitness enthusiast documented his results (YouTube/What I’ve Learned)

Everett’s channel, titled ‘What I’ve Learned’, has over 2.3 million subscribers and features videos of him speaking about health issues, beliefs about certain types of food, or even particular aspects about relationships.

What does the challenge involve?

With this challenge, he focused on a weightlifting-focused plan, measure his weight and performance in four standard gym exercises at the start, barbell lifts, a deadlift, squats and a bench press.

As well as this, the social media personality carried out blood tests throughout to measure his testosterone production and cholesterol levels, among other things.

Starting out at 78kg, he began his challenge, noting that he wasn’t ‘a serious lifter’, but included it in his general gym routine.

So, he kicked on with his 30-egg-per-day challenge, also accompanying it with a bowl of rice, some beef, a small yogurt, and even fruit and honey.

Everett even occasionally threw a protein bar in, estimating that everything together would range between 3,300 to 3,700 calories per day, way over the daily recommendation of 2,500 for men.

Why eggs?

You don’t have to be a genius to know that eggs are high in protein, and help to build and repair muscles.

As well as this, they have beneficial vitamins and minerals, such as calcium and iron, as he explained: “30 eggs gives me 190 grams of protein, my daily amount of vitamin A, 120 per cent of my vitamin D, tons of B vitamins.”

He worried though that his cholesterol level would sky-rocket, and believed that the excess saturated fat that his body was taking in could be converted into testosterone, which would help with muscle growth when carrying out strength exercises.

What changes did Everett notice?

Increase in energy

Just nine days in, Everett started to started to see positive change in his behaviour, explaining that he was ‘feeling pretty great’ and had ‘more focus’, as well as a lot more energy.

He suggested that this due to the spike in testosterone.

Tummy problems

His biggest issue came 20 days in, as he explained: “I found myself stuck in the bathroom for over an hour, I was really constipated and my stomach kept painfully cramping up.”

This stopped when he began cooking the egg whites again, with his digestive problems being caused by something called typsin inhibitors, which are found in raw eggs and can cause problems in the gut.

His cholesterol levels didn't spike as much as he thought (Youtube/What I've Learned)

His cholesterol levels didn’t spike as much as he thought (Youtube/What I’ve Learned)

What were the results?

Going over his final blood results, Everett found almost no change in his LDL testosterone level, which he described as ‘the bad cholesterol’, with an increase of just six.

An increase in this type of cholesterol can lead to heart issues.

“My mood, focus, libido and energy all made it seem like I had higher testosterone but apparently not,” he pointed out.

The good cholesterol in his body, HDL cholesterol, increased and Everett confessed that the challenge was quite easy.

“The first couple days weren’t really all that hard for me… it’s only about 3,500 calories and since I’m doing all that lifting I’m getting really hungry,” he added.

He managed to gain six kilograms of muscle mass from his starting weight and improved his deadlift personal best by 20kg, while improving his bench press by 10kg.

Everett also found a decrease in triglycerides, a dangerous type of fat, in his blood – which can cause stroke or heart attacks.

The content creator concluded by admitting that he ‘might do this again if I needed to bulk up.’

Steve Mallen has strived to raise awareness for mental health among young people in the 10 years following his son’s death

Warning: This article contains discussion of suicide, which some readers may find distressing.

It’s been 10 years since Edward Mallen took his own life just a few hundred yards from his home.

From the outside, the young teenager seemed to have a happy life; a ‘high performance individual’ with a place at Cambridge University awaiting him, he was voted most likely to become prime minister by his classmates, and was a talented cricket player.

But aged just 18, Edward killed himself. His story, sadly, is not unique, but it highlights how so many young people have been let down by a system that was supposed to protect them in their hour of need.

Following his tragic death, Edward’s father, Steve Mallen CBE, made him a promise, and has spent every day since striving to change how we as a society treat these issues, setting up mental health organisations such as the Zero Suicide Alliance and The MindEd Trust.

He is also part of the National Suicide Prevention Group within the Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC).

Speaking to LADbible about his journey since the tragic passing of his son, Steve explained that while his family had a ‘comfortable professional background’, typically representing a ‘stable environment’, they weren’t immune from the devastating impact of a mental health crisis.

“We were not affected by a lot of the triggers that cause challenges to young people that lead to mental illness, but like most parents, we knew nothing whatsoever about mental health,” the father-of-three says, adding that it was once ‘taboo’ to speak about.

Noting that there has been a ‘revolution’ in how we view mental health, Steve said every member of society has a ‘duty of care to learn about mental illness’.

Despite an increase in awareness in recent times, though, the number in suicides per 100,000 for those aged 15-19 sits at 5.5 as of 2023, an increase from the figure of 3.9 just 10 years prior, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Steve revealed that Edward became ill ‘very quickly and very catastrophically’.

Openly admitting that the family had no idea about his condition, he said his son desperately looked for help and didn’t get it.

“He told the mental health specialist that he was very unwell, that he was thinking of taking his own life,” Steve, who was named in the New Year Honours List for his services to mental health and suicide prevention, recalls.

“He actually asked the mental health nurse, ‘Would you please tell my mum?’ And nobody ever told us. He made a request which was ignored.

“500 things needed to go wrong in order for him to take his own life. And they all did.”

In his son’s official medical notes, the grieving father discovered they had recorded him as having a ‘clean shirt’, and that he ‘made eye contact and shook your hand’.

“My son presented as clinically depressed and deeply suicidal… but because he presented as a nice, polite young man, they thought to themselves, ‘He couldn’t possibly be ill’,” Steve tells us.

The family found out about Edward’s tragic passing together, when police officers showed up at their home.

“Some very large policemen walked into my dining room with crackling radios and informed us that Edward had died.” Steve explains, reliving the moment. “He died 500 yards from our front door, in a village where we lived.”

The traumatic experience caused the family to seek professional help, particularly for Edward’s younger brother and sister.

Following the darkest point in their childhoods, both of his siblings have gone on to do ‘very well’ with their education and careers, but their father emphasised: “They had a childhood which you would never wish on any child in any walk of life.”

All the good that Steve has done can be traced back to one moment during his son’s funeral, which he recalls ‘was overflowing’ with TV cameras also present.

“I made my son a public promise that I would investigate his untimely death,” he explains, adding: “All that I’ve achieved in the past 10 years basically comes down to a father’s promise to his departed son.”

And it’s been Steve’s will and drive to make good on this oath that has kept him going.

“My son was dying right in front of me, and I couldn’t see it,” he admits.”It’s almost like a Shakespearean play, there are lots of characters, and I’m one of them.

“I will forever think that I might have been able to save my son.”

Living up to his promise hasn’t been easy, as the DHSC member said that he ‘did his homework’ before meetings with politicians, leaders of the NHS and charities, ensuring that he ‘was probably the most knowledgeable person in the room’.

A key part of his mission for the UK is to aim for ‘zero suicides’, pointing out: “Zero is not a target, but if zero isn’t the right number, what is? How many suicides are acceptable? The answer is, none.”

The dad’s work with the Zero Suicide Alliance is to ensure people are educated on mental illness and can also get the help they need through their community before it escalates to something much more serious.

“Look after your mate,” Steve tells me. “It’s that bloody simple, particularly for young men.”

When asked about what needs to change within the NHS, he simply says we need to ‘give them less to do’.

“Stop people getting so ill in the first place,” he says plainly. “It doesn’t take a genius to work out that prevention is better than curing.”

And while he admits he that while he was ‘pleased’ to have been awarded his CBE, it could not help but be overshadowed by depth of love he has for his son and the tragedy of his passing.

“The fact remains, the suicide rate in this country is far too high. So for all that I’ve achieved, the challenge is still there,” he says.

Steve and his family have managed to piece their lives back together, slowly, and bit by bit, doing an enormous amount of good for others along the way. But the scars from that day, 10 years ago, will always remain.

“Imagine being in a horrible car accident, waking up in hospital and finding that one of your legs had been amputated,” Steve says, summing up his life now. “You’d take inspiration from other people that have been through similar, you might even learn to walk on crutches.

“Eventually, they might even give you an artificial leg and make you a bionic man, you might even run in the Paralympics and win a medal. But make no mistake – you will always have a limp.”

Neal McDonough has revealed that he refuses to engage in any intimate scenes on-screen, even going as far as to say he won’t kiss anyone other than his wife.

The 58-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Band of Brothers and Desperate Housewives, has opened up about his unwavering commitment to his wife, Ruve Robertson – who is also the mother of his five kids.

For most actors, romantic scenes – including on-screen kisses – are just part of the job, but for McDonough, his lips belong to one woman only.

In an interview with Closer Weekly, the actor made his stance clear, sharing: “I won’t kiss any other woman because these lips are meant for one woman.”

The Homestead star’s personal rules have led him to turn down roles that require romantic scenes, and it hasn’t always been easy as he’s lost major opportunities because of it.

According to Page Six, the dad-of-five recalled a specific incident in 2010 when he lost an estimated $1 million gig on the set of ABC TV’s Scoundrels due to his refusal to participate in intimate scenes with actress Virginia Madsen.

He recounted the fallout, describing it as “horrible,” and adding: “After that, I couldn’t get a job because everybody thought I was this religious zealot. I am very religious. I put God and family first, and me second. That’s what I live by. It was hard for a few years.”

“But I was not going to lose the fight. And it worked. My career has been phenomenal,” he said.

But, despite the challenges, McDonough’s career has thrived, and he has taken on various roles that align with his values.

When he was cast as the husband of Nicollette Sheridan’s character on Desperate Housewives, he had a direct conversation with the show’s creator, Marc Cherry.

“I’m sure you know, but I won’t kiss anybody,” he told Cherry. Rather than pushing back, Cherry embraced the challenge: “All right, I’m just going to have to write better,” and the two went on to have a successful working relationship.

Beyond Hollywood, McDonough’s devotion to his wife is just as strong. He’s been married to Robertson – a former bikini model from South Africa – since 2003.

Their love story began on St. Patrick’s Day in 2001 when they quite literally bumped into each other on a London street.

“We literally bumped into each other on the street, locked eyes, and that was it,” McDonough recalled.”The next morning, I called the woman I was dating at the time and said, ‘I’m sorry, it’s not going to work out with us anymore—I just met the woman I’m going to marry.'”

Elsewhere in the interview, McDonough revealed that there was a time he nearly walked away from Hollywood altogether.

The Boomtown actor shared that before landing Band of Brothers, he was ready to quit acting and work at his parent’s motel – until one unexpected call changed everything.

“I was about to quit Hollywood when I got a call from Steven Spielberg. He wanted to see me for Band of Brothers, and it was off to the races,” he revealed.

Since then, McDonough has built a successful career on his own terms.
