Simon Vickers has been jailed for life over the fatal stabbing of his 14-year-old daughter

The grandfather of a teenager who was fatally stabbed by her father after he was convicted of her murder has spoken out.

14-year-old Scarlett Vickers died after being stabbed in the chest by her father, Simon, in what was described as a ‘play fight’ at the family home.

Vickers, 50, has since been found guilty of his daughter’s killing and sentenced to life in prison, serving a minimum of 15 years behind bars.

Vickers had maintained throughout the trial that he did not intend to kill his daughter and that Scarlett had accidentally received the 11cm chest wound as a result of a ‘play fight’ gone horribly wrong.

Following his sentencing at Teeside Crown Court, Scarlett’s grandfather has spoken out in support of his son and claimed that he would never ‘deliberately’ hurt his daughter.

“He would never in a million years have hurt her deliberately,” Barrie, 78, said in an interview with The Sun.

“Scarlett was his life. Simon would have killed himself before he laid one finger on that girl. And I’d be the first one not to speak to him again had I thought for one second he did it.”

He added: “We know Simon wouldn’t have killed her. We know the truth. It was an accident.”

Barrie isn’t the first person to stand by Vickers’ side either, as Scarlett’s mother, Sarah Hall – Vickers’ partner – has also supported him.

Sarah had stood by her partner throughout the trial, where jurors learnt that Scarlett had bled to death in her kitchen, telling the court: “It was an accident, I know he would never harm her.”

Defence Nicholas Lumley KC added that the family shared the view that Vickers ‘did not intend Scarlett any harm’ on the night in question.

“None can believe that he will now be known as Scarlett’s murderer,” he said.

However, this point of view wasn’t shared by Mr Justice Cotter, who called Vickers’ version of events ‘unconvincing and wholly implausible.’

“You have never accepted exactly what happened, although you have accepted it was your actions that caused her death,” he said.

“Your beloved daughter deserved that you told the truth, you have not done so.”

He continued: “Scarlett was just 14, a normal, healthy woman with a long life ahead of her when it was cut short by you.

“She died in the kitchen of her own home within minutes of having been stabbed. It went from an ordinary, happy family Friday night to tragedy within seconds due to what must have been your loss of temper.”

Christopher Atkinson, Head of the Complex Casework Unit for CPS North East, said: “It is difficult to understand what motivated Simon Vickers to take the life of his daughter, Scarlett.

“In the absence of any plausible explanation on his part, we may never fully understand the circumstances which led to her tragic death.

“What is abundantly clear is that the account provided by Simon Vickers was wholly inconsistent with the forensic evidence in this case.

“Crucially, the medical expert we instructed to examine Scarlett’s injuries made it clear that they could only have been caused had the knife been firmly gripped as it made contact.”

Woman has to tape or glue eyes open just to see due to bizarre condition

Woman has to tape or glue eyes open just to see due to bizarre condition

Tia-Leigh has gotten bruises from trying to keep her eyes open

But this woman has to tape or glue hers open just to be able to see due to a bizarre condition.

One morning in May 2023, Tia-Leigh Streamer assumed she just had a bit of hay fever when she awoke with a drooping eyelid.

And then, in that December, she woke up unable to open either of her eyes. The 20-year-old was referred to a specialist, with both her GP and doctors at Southampton hospital baffled by what was causing it.

Streamer was told she may have a rare eyelid condition called blepharospasm. The NHS explain this is where the muscles around the eyelids develop an involuntary spasm, causing them to twitch, flutter or blink uncontrollably.

And in severe cases, suffers may be unable to open their eyes due to excessive eyelid spasm.

The Dorset woman said she has the ‘same level of sight’ as someone who is visually impaired, except she’s ‘got nothing wrong’ with her eyesight.

“I know it’s neurological but they [the doctors] don’t know what causes it which makes it worse for me, because if they could say it’s caused from this, I think it would make me feel slightly less in the dark,” she said.

“To be told I’ve got this for the rest of my life and not know why is a hard thing to deal with.”

There is currently no cure for the condition, but doctors have been trialling a way to help Streamer keep her eyes open – Botox injections.

This has been trialled by docs at Royal Bournemouth hospital since March last year and she hasn’t been able to open her eyes without the jabs since.

When the Botox wears off, the only way she can see is by taping and gluing her eyelids or holding her eyes open with her hands. But even when it is effective, sunlight, car headlights and computer screens can trigger Streamer’s eyes to close.

The woman says she’s not ‘been coping very well’ with the ordeal, as she says it’s particularly harder when the Botox runs out.

“The more often I have it, at some point my body will get used to the Botox and it won’t work anymore,” she added.

“I have them done every eight to 10 weeks at the moment. It was 12 weeks. But I only get about three to five weeks where it actually takes any effect.”

Having to physically hold her eyelids open to be able to see, Streamer says doctors have told her the longer she does it for, the higher the chance of ‘actually damaging’ her eyes.

“I’ve actually had bruises on my eyelids from the tape before.”

Streamer was training to become an accountant but her condition caused her to stop working.

“It was awful to be honest, I had everything planned out. I was training to do that and I was saving to move out and get married and have children and it was all taken away from me,” she said.

But the main thing she struggles with is the lack of freedom as she ‘can’t be independent as much anymore’. It’s stopped her from doing things she enjoys, as well as the basics like making dinner.

“It’s like I’m going back to being a child again because I can’t use a knife and fork and see what I’m doing,” she added.

Streamer is particularly worried about having a baby with her partner.

“Night-time is the worst, they just won’t open at all. I have nightmares about a baby next to me and it’s crying and I can’t wake my husband up and I can’t get around to help because of my eyes,” she explained.

“I do know now there are things that can be put in place to help because obviously people who are blind all the time still have children.”

Streamer said it’s going to be a ‘trial and error year’ with her doctor as they vary the amounts of Botox to see if they can find a better balance.

Kendrick Lamar made subtle dig at Drake with Super Bowl stage design that almost no one noticed

The rapper’s stage design was one big Easter egg, apparently

Kendrick Lamar really does everything for a reason.

The American rapper put in a memorable Super Bowl half-time performance last night (9 February), and made further headlines for one of the songs on his setlist.

You don’t need to be a genius to figure out which of the ‘HUMBLE’ rapper’s tunes we’re on about.

‘Not Like Us’ was released in May 2024, and it was widely regarded as the song of the summer, despite being the exclamation mark in a rap beef with Canadian rapper, Drake.

While he was seen particularly enjoying himself when dissing his rival in front of millions on national TV, the 37-year-old artist certainly got the crowd up on their feet at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana with his setlist.

And Lamar went on to perform his diss track as part of the show, despite Drake already filing a lawsuit against the record company, though he had to censor his well-known ‘certified p**dophile’ line, for all the kids watching.

For those who aren’t familiar with the line, it goes: “Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young / You better not ever go to cell block one / To any b**ch that talk to him and they in love / Just make sure you hide your lil’ sister from him / They tell me Chubbs the only one that get your hand-me-downs / And Party at the party playin’ with his nose now / And Baka got a weird case, why is he around? / Certified Lover Boy? Certified (missed out ‘p**dophiles’ lyric).”

But after performing the song in front of millions and giving the camera a cheeky smile, it turns out that there’s been another dig at Drake that we’ve missed.

Surprisingly, it was video game-related, and it could be seen at the end of the show.

As the crowd cheered and applauded him after appearances from SZA and Samuel L. Jackson, Lamar closed his show by turning the lights down, the words ‘Game Over’ being displayed on the side of the stadium.

On stage though, the iconic Playstation symbols of a cross, circle, triangle, and square could be seen.

More or less a victory lap after triumphing over Drake, this move may have been one to rub salt into the wounds of the Canadian, who is currently in Australia.

Regardless, music and video game fans were elated to see that the stage was seemingly a big reference to gaming after the iconic show that the LA rapper put on.

One fan took to X to say: “Kendrick Lamar brought out the PlayStation symbols and said ‘Game Over’.”

Another wrote: “Serena Williams, Samuel Jackson, PlayStation references, the GNX, the whole stadium yelling ‘A MINORR’ ugh the dancers in red, white & blue, SZA?! Thank you Kendrick. The revolution will be televised.”

Minutes before playing ‘Not Like Us’, the rapper even said: “I want to play their favourite song… but you know they love to sue,” referencing Drake’s lawsuit.

The tune went viral and will undoubtedly go down as one of the tunes of the 2020s, earning the rapper a number of Grammy awards just a week before this performance.

Ring doorbell footage showed a tall figure vanishing into thin air

The resident of a Staffordshire home was left spooked after a Ring doorbell seemed to show a ‘ghost’ floating past.

It’s a bold statement to make, and if it’s true, it’s a win for the supernatural lovers, as the mum claimed that she saw the figure ‘disappear’ after she returned from a walk last week.

On 4 February, Jackie Batt, 55, got back from a walk and was told by her neighbour Kerry-Anne Docherty, 46, that she may want to watch a video that she sent over.

The creepy Ring doorbell footage showed Batt walking past Docherty’s home, but also revealed a ‘tall’ woman in what looked like 1940s clothes walking the other way.

Following this weird occurrence, she vanished into thin air, though when Docherty suggested that this may be a glitch, Batt said that she only walked past a man.

In fact, Batt theorised that the figure in the peculiar footage was the ghost of ‘a miner’s wife’.

Docherty posted the video on Facebook, shot around 7am, with users split on it being a glitch or an actual spirit.

Batt explained that they live in the same cul-de-sac, and she was simply on a walk before getting a message from her neighbour.

“She then sent me her Ring doorbell footage and I said ‘wow’. You see me walk past and then I can only assume it’s a lady dressed in 40s clothing but I didn’t see anyone. I would have remembered seeing her,” the Brit claimed.

“The building where we live was built in the 1940s for the miners at the time. I can only assume it is a miner’s wife.”

Calling the video ‘amazing’, the 55-year-old said that she was a believer in the supernatural, and insisted that she ‘honestly didn’t see anyone walking down the street’.

Claiming that others online agreed, she explained: “Some have said it could have been a glitch or a shadow from me but I’m quite short and she’s really tall.

“She looks like she disappeared into thin air. She looked like she had a long coat on with a hat and little wedged shoes and it was a strange one.”

Batt thinks that it must be a ghost, while Docherty doesn't want to believe that it is (Kennedy)

Docherty usually checks the footage captured by her Ring doorbell as there was a robbery nearby, and she generally likes to see what goes on in the street.

However, unlike Batt, she is sceptical of the paranormal, though struggles to find an explanation for last week’s footage.

Speaking more about what people said about the video on social media, she said people called it a ‘spirit’, even adding: “At one point when she’s walking past another neighbour’s house you can see the gate through her.

“She looks like she dissolves into thin air at the end too.”

In the post on Facebook, Docherty shared the video, explaining that her neighbour didn’t see the woman walking past before dissolving, saying: “I’m not a paranormal believer (basically because I’ve never really witnessed anything) but I am now kind of sceptical.

“If anyone can shed any light [on this] I would be truly grateful.”

One user suggested that it could be ‘a spirit’, ‘another dimension’, or even ‘a sentient being’. Far-fetched ideas at best.

A couple of other agreed on the figure wearing 40s clothing too, adding to the theory.

However, one sceptic wrote: “It’s most likely a signal dropout,” while another echoed: “Looks like a camera glitch as the person in white appeared past the point where the other started disappearing.”

Donald Trump left the Super Bowl before the game ended, despite spending millions to attend

When it comes to going to America’s Super Bowl, even the cheapest of nosebleed tickets will cost you an arm and a leg these days.

While many will have paid hundreds, if not thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars to see Kendrick’s halftime show and the end to the Chiefs dynasty by the Eagles, not many will have paid more than Donald Trump.

It is estimated that the President of the United States spent between $15 million and $20 million due to the cost of secret service, and air travel and motorcade, as well as local law enforcement and improvements to stadium security.

Despite becoming the first sitting President to attend the Super Bowl, Trump ended up leaving the event early according to a POTUS flight tracker.

It had him departing around 8pm local time, around about the time Lamar performed the halftime show.

This has had people online speculating as to the reasons behind it.

Theory one – Trump is a Chiefs supporter

One pervasive theory on Twitter surrounded the idea that Trump was unhappy due to the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs were being trounced by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Though Trump has never revealed which team he supports he was more positive in his discussion of the Chiefs, noting that the wife of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Brittany Mahomes, is rumoured to be a Trump fan.

Star tight-end Travis Kelce also revealed that it was ‘an honour’ to play in front of any president when asked about Trump’s attendance.

This led one fan to post a picture of Kelce online and say: “Imagine saying ‘it’s an honor’ for Trump to watch you play at the Super Bowl only for him to leave early cause y’all was getting beat so bad. LOOOOSSEEERRRRRR.”

The Chiefs ended up failing in their attempt to win a third successive Super Bowl, losing 40-22.

Theory 2 – Trump was offended by Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance

Though many focused on Lamar’s shots fired at fellow rapper Drake, many noticed elements of his performance which were interpreted as clear protests against Trump.

In particular, fans noticed the changed phrase of ‘The revolution is about to be televised, you picked the right time but the wrong guy’ at the top of his performance.

One fan tweeted: “Kendrick Lamar dissed Trump and protested the United States in front of him and Trump got scared and left the Super Bowl early. It just doesn’t get any better than that.”

Another said: “Kendrick knew Trump was in attendance and he still did that. Epic.”

Lamar also made a reference to ‘forty acres and a mule’, a promise made to freed slaves by a Union General, and had Samuel L. Jackson appear as ‘Uncle Sam’.

Theory 3 – It was just a matter of logistics

One fan responded to those pointing out that he was already on Air Force One before the match finished and said: “Not just Trump. All US Presidents leave major events like this early.

“Imagine the security nightmare for Secret Service if he stayed until the end and left at the same time as everyone else. Doing the crowd a favor by leaving early due to road closures for motorcade to pass.”

A jury convicted him of murder

A man who stabbed his 14-year-old daughter in the heart and claimed they were having a ‘play fight’ has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 years behind bars.

The jury found Simon Vickers, 50, guilty of murder after they heard accounts of how he stabbed his daughter Scarlett in the chest with a kitchen knife, causing a wound 11cm deep.

The girl’s mother, Sarah Hall, was the only other person in the room at the time and told Teesside Crown Court that Vickers loved his daughter and would never hurt her.

However, a jury convicted him of murder over manslaughter by 10 to two votes, and Vickers was sentenced to life imprisonment as a result.

The Crown Prosecution Service has said that exactly what happened might never be fully known.

Home Office pathologist Dr Jennifer Bolton explained that the way the knife went into the 14-year-old’s chest meant it must have been used with force.

Vickers had been drinking wine, watching the Euros football and had smoked cannabis earlier in the day, with Hall saying that he and his daughter had been throwing grapes at each other for fun.

She said that she’d snipped at Vickers with a pair of kitchen tongs and Scarlett called him ‘wimpy’ when he said it hurt.

Hall said that she turned away to prepare a meal and heard Scarlett say ‘ow’, at which point she turned back and saw her daughter bleeding.

The mum called the police, saying they’d been ‘messing about’ and that Vickers had thrown something at their daughter ‘and he didn’t realise’.

Vickers claimed that his daughter had leapt towards him while play fighting and it had been a ‘freak accident’, saying that he’d picked up what he thought were the kitchen tongs and swiped them across Scarlett’s chest.

Prosecutor Mark McKone KC told the jury that he accepted Vickers loved his daughter and was ‘devastated’ at her death, but the blow that killed her could not have been caused by being accidentally swiped across the chest.

Drake issued statement over 'certified p**dophile' diss in song Kendrick Lamar performed at Super Bowl halftime show

Drake has issued a statement responding to Kendrick Lamar’s diss calling him a ‘certified p***ophile’

Drake is currently in the midst of a lawsuit with the Universal Music Group (UMG) who he accuses of artificially inflating the streams on the record as well as defamation.

He said in a statement issued via lawyers prior to the song playing in the half-time show of this year’s Super Bowl: “UMG is masquerading as a champion of artistic freedom by calling its actions merely ‘entertainment,’ but there is nothing entertaining about pedophilia or child abuse in the real world.

“We are confident that the evidence we will ultimately present at trial—including information we’ve already learned and continue to receive since filing the lawsuit—will expose UMG’s gross prioritization of its own corporate profits and executive bonuses over its exclusively signed artists’ well-being and the truth.”

Though both Lamar and Drake were close friends for many years, sharing several songs together a slow drift between them exploded last year.

Lamar and Drake engaged in a heated rap beef originating from a Kendrick Lamar verse on Future’s ‘Like That’ in which he took shots at Drake and J Cole over suggestions they were in a rap ‘big 3’ with him.

This spiralled to Drake accusing Lamar of covering up domestic abuse allegations in one diss track and Lamar penning a song to Drake’s parents and child in which he said Drake ‘should die’.

The beef ultimately ended with ‘Not Like Us’, in which Lamar said the now famous line ‘Certified Loverboy, Certified ‘p***phile’… trying to strike a chord and it’s probably a Minor.”

The song led to Lamar winning five Grammys, including record of the year, and performed at last night’s Super Bowl.

While some questioned whether Lamar would perform the song during the halftime show, he ended up looking directly down the barrel of the camera to rap ‘say Drake I hear you like em young.’

In addition to this, the Compton rapper brought out Serena Williams, someone long-rumoured to have dated Drake, against whom the Toronto rapper has put several references into his work.

One viewer said of the performance: “Kendrick Lamar performing “Not Like Us” and calling Drake a p*do in front of 100M viewers live at the Super Bowl is going down in history”.

Though Kendrick Lamar is not named in the lawsuit against UMG, it states that the allegations made against Drake are unfounded.

UMG previously released a statement regarding Drake’s allegations against them: “Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist—let alone Drake—is illogical.

“We have invested massively in his music and our employees around the world have worked tirelessly for many years to help him achieve historic commercial and personal financial success.

“Throughout his career, Drake has intentionally and successfully used UMG to distribute his music and poetry to engage in conventionally outrageous back-and-forth ‘rap battles’ to express his feelings about other artists.

“He now seeks to weaponize the legal process to silence an artist’s creative expression and to seek damages from [Universal] for distributing that artist’s music.”

UMG represent both Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

Super Bowl 2025 highlights

Donald Trump makes an appearance – and fans can’t work out if he was booed or cheered

Donald Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl yesterday, but fans couldn’t make out if the POTUS was met with cheers or boos.

The camera panned to the 78-year-old during Jon Batiste’s rendition of the national anthem.

One fan wondered: “Did they cheer or boo Trump? Difficult to tell.”

Taylor Swift ‘aggressively booed’

While Trump seemed to be met with a mixed reaction, Swift was met with an overwhelming negative reception when she turned up to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce.

When her face appeared on screen at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome, she appeared to say: “What’s going on?” as the crowd jeered her.

Trump, meanwhile, rubbed salt in the wound on Truth Social, writing: “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”

However, as many social media users pointed out, Swift was never going to go down particularly well in a stadium full of Eagles fans.

New Lilo & Stitch ad sees Stitch run riot in stadium

Like always, there were some major new movie trailers premiering during the game including Jurassic Park Rebirth, M3GAN 2.0 and Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

By far the most popular though was the new ad for Lilo & Stitch, which saw the adorable little blue alien cause absolute chaos in the Super Bowl stadium.

Kendrick Lamar’s necklace and Samuel L. Jackson appearance

Lamar was also spotted wearing a necklace with a massive ‘a’ on it, a reference to his brutal ‘Not Like Us’ quip where he says of Drake and his team: “Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.”

Samuel L. Jackson, dressed up as Uncle Sam, also made a surprise appearance as Lamar’s emcee. The way he butted in by accusing Lamar of being ‘too ghetto’ was widely assumed to be a reference to a group of Republicans who wrote a letter to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, demanding Lamar’s halftime show not be too ‘lewd’ or ‘offensive’.

Serena Williams’ cameo

One person few people expected to turn up during Kendrick Lamar’s set was Serena Williams, with the tennis star doing a ‘crip walk’ dance at the corner of the stage.

Not only was her appearance significant because she’s rumoured to have dated Drake, but she was also widely criticised for doing the same dance at Wimbledon to celebrate winning an Olympic gold medal in 2021. Many said the backlash against her was racist.

Williams wrote after the Super Bowl: “Man, I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon. Ooh, I would’ve been fined.”

At the time, it seemed like one of his standard ‘jokes’

A resurfaced clip shows Gino D’Acampo once making a shocking joke about Holly Willoughby while they were live on air.

The celebrity chef is currently facing accusations of ‘inappropriate and intimidating behaviour’ from dozens of people over the past 12 years, according to ITV News.

D’Acampo has ‘firmly denied’ the allegations made about him as production staff say they had ‘unacceptable’, ‘distressing’ and horrendous’ experiences with him.

And a pair who have had plenty of experience working with him on TV is, of course, Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

One of his many previous appearances on This Morning has resurfaced online, as D’Acampo made a reference to Willoughby’s genitals.

Back in 2021, the chef was discussing the death of ‘the father of Tiramisu’, Ado Campeol, as he went through the locations of Italian cities. But known for making plenty of innuendos on telly, he used the presenter’s body as a map.

He pointed across her shoulders and chest as he explained where Savoiardi biscuit comes from before Schofield said: “I’m really concerned if he’s going to talk about Sicily.”

“No, Sicily’s all the way down there!” the chef said as he continued referring to Willoughby: “But your belly button – I was born in Naples which is on your side but I went to school where the Vesuvius is.”

And this then led to what seemed like a pretty typical D’Acampo joke: “So, it’s more inland, so… er, I can technically say that I spent my youth training and playing around your vagina.”

Even used to his 'jokes', they still seemed shocked (ITV)

This got a ‘oh my god’ from Willoughby as the presenters were left stunned before the chef backed up: “There is nothing wrong with that. It is just a word that everybody knows and that’s what I have been doing geographically.”

Schofield rounded off the joke as he said to the camera: “Morning Ofcom.”

What seemed like a standard D’Acampo joke at the time now has a little edge to it due to the allegations.

At the time, some viewers did reportedly slam on X that he was ‘going over the mark’, as they called it ‘not funny’ and ‘so disgusting’ as they were shocked it was ‘deemed ok to say’ live on air.

LADbible has contacted his team for comment on this resurfaced clip, and D’Acampo has denied allegations made against him as he said in a statement to ITV News: “I have been told by ITN news that allegations have been made about me acting inappropriately, some dating back over ten years ago.

“I have never been made aware of these matters previously and the allegations are firmly denied. I would not do anything that I thought would upset or distress anyone.

“This is simply not in my nature. I do not recognise the version of events being put to me. Not only have these allegations never been raised with me before, I have been repeatedly supported by executives at the highest level and was commissioned on prime-time programmes during the period in which it is now suggested I was acting inappropriately.

“I am a father, husband and have worked with well over 1,500 people on around 80 productions in my career, which I have been so proud of. I take such matters extremely seriously and the suggestion that I have acted in an improper way against is deeply upsetting.”

ITV provided a statement to LADbible, which reads: “ITV is completely committed to creating an environment where everyone is treated with respect and feels able to give of their best. Our promise to those we work with is that where a complaint is made, or serious concern raised, we will always investigate and if we find that something inappropriate has happened, we will take action.

“The same standards are expected of all production companies who make programmes on ITV’s behalf. It is production companies who have the primary responsibility for the duty of care of everyone they work with, both on and off screen, when making shows. We make clear our expectations of producers and have robust and comprehensive policies which we implement contractually.

“We have strengthened these policies in the last 5 years and have set up a dedicated Complaints Handling Unit in 2024 to manage any complaints we receive about on screen presenters and ensure ITV has a centralised view across different productions.

“The standards of behaviour that ITV expects are very clear. Everyone working with ITV is subject to ITV’s Code of Ethics and Conduct. At ITV we treat everyone with courtesy, fairness, dignity and respect and do not tolerate abusive behaviour of any form in the workplace. We have also reiterated our expectations of our on screen presenters’ behaviour through our Conduct and Standards Guidelines for On Screen Personalities issued in 2024. All of the concerns and complaints raised by those who have spoken to ITN describe behaviour which is inappropriate and unacceptable.

“Most of them were not reported to ITV at the time. Where issues have been raised with ITV action has been taken. We can only act where we know that concerns have been raised, and will now be following up on those that had not previously been reported to us.

Hisashi Ouchi’s death is a harrowing reminder about the capability of nuclear power

When it comes to the destructive power of nuclear energy, we’re all aware of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the meltdown at the Chernobyl power plant.

But did you know about the man who was suffered some of the worst radiation burns in history after an accident at work?

This is the story of Hisashi Ouchi.

Ouchi worked at Tokaimura Nuclear Power Plant in Japan, a conversion facility which created the nuclear fuel rods for other locations.

30 September, 1999 began as any other work day would for Ouchi and his colleagues Masato Shinohara and Yutaka Yokokawa, who were unaware of how drastically their lives would change forever.

The three men were assigned to a task which required them to mix uranyl nitrate inside a huge metal vat, a task which is extremely dangerous. Unfortunately the men had little experience in handling such a volatile substance and made a miscalculation while mixing the harmful liquids – it would later be revealed the group had used16kg of uranium, 13.6kg over the limit, – which led to disaster.

The men witnessed a shocking blue flash as dangerous amounts of radiation and gamma rays were released into the atmosphere from the uncontrolled reaction – which is not good news.

All three men immediately received high does of radiation, with Yokokawa, who was the furthest away, absorbing 3,000 millisieverts (mSv) of radiation.

Shinohara absorbed 10,000 mSv while Ouchi, who had his body pressed up against the side of the tank when the accident occurred, received a dose of 17,000 mSv.

To put this into perspective, the international radiation safety limit for those working around radiation is 20 mSv per person, per year. Meanwhile the dose absorbed by emergency responders at Chernobyl was between 20 to 500 mSv.

A dose of 5,000 mSv is considered fatal, which means that Ouchi received three times the fatal dose, and Shinohara double the amount.

As the worst effected of the three, Ouchi was the first to experience the horrifying symptoms of radiation poisoning.

Ouchi was transferred to a hospital in Tokyo where he would remain alive for 83 more days, in unimaginable pain.

Upon arrival at hospital Ouchi appeared initially healthy, but he would swiftly deteriorate as the radiation began to destroy his body.

Ouchi’s white blood cell count plummeted completely, meaning he was also now completely vulnerable to infection as he no longer had an immune system. Doctors would make desperate attempts to save his life at the insistence of his family, despite the unbearable agony.

He underwent multiple skin grafts, blood transfusions, and even stem cell transplants – but none of this was able to prevent the inevitable from happening.

On his 59th day in hospital, Ouchi would suffer three heart attacks, but was revived upon the request of his relatives.

His torment would finally come to an end on 21 December when he passed away from multiple organ failure. He was just 35-years-old.

Shinohara would later pass away in 2000 from multiple organ failure at the age of 40.

President Trump mocks Taylor Swift on social media after the singer is booed at the Super Bowl

One would think the president had better things to do than post about celebrities

Donald Trump has been making fun of Taylor Swift after she was booed at the Super Bowl.

He became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, and given the mixed reception of cheers and boos he seemed to get from the crowd when the cameras were on him, he’s rather throwing stones at Swift from a glass house here.

Swift’s boyfriend is Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, whose team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles to miss out on winning the Super Bowl three times in a row.

Since she’s so associated with the Chiefs when she ended up on the screen, the legion of Eagles fans packing out the stadium started to ‘aggressively boo’ her, leaving the singer to seemingly ask ‘what’s going on?’ amidst the noise.

Trump has had quite the feud with Swift and once posted ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT’ after she said she would be voting against him at the recent US election.

She didn’t criticise him in her post last year saying she’d be voting for Kamala Harris, instead writing that she was voting ‘for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them’.

In the aftermath of the Super Bowl, it seems that Trump decided the best use of his presidential time was to share posts on Truth Social comparing the crowd reactions they got.

He posted a video of himself getting some cheers alongside a video of Swift being loudly booed, then shared someone else’s post that said: “Trump gets massive cheers at the Super Bowl while Taylor Swift gets booed.

“The world is healing!”

Not content to just do that, Trump then went back in for another dig at the singer on his own social media platform, but not before declaring that he didn’t want the US to make any more pennies.

On the subject of currency, he wrote: “For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let’s rip the waste out of our great nations budget, even if it’s a penny at a time.”

Two hours later he returned to the subject of Swift, posting: “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”

Trump didn’t stick around to watch the end of the game, leaving shortly after halftime and a show in which people think Kendrick Lamar took a chance to make fun of the president.

Samuel L. Jackson dressed as American mascot Uncle Sam welcomed Kendrick onto the stage to perform ‘Not Like Us’, while Jackson then told the rapper ‘he’s too ghetto’ and then shouting ‘Yes! America wants slow chill music’ when he changed songs.
