Starting a new life Down Under isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be

A family who relocated from Scotland to Australia have issued a warning to families thinking of doing the same.

Life in the UK can sometimes be downright miserable. Cramped into tiny flats and house shares due to the cost of living crisis, and living under a near-constant canopy of rain, it’s understandable why do many Brits dream of a sunnier life on the other side of the world.

Enter Australia, where life seems to be non-stop sunshine and easy living, with around 1.1million British nationals living in country (per statistics from the Australian Government).

However, one family who made the move have since warned that life Down Under is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Sharing her experience online is Scottish vlogger Kimberley Lucas, who outlined the reasons behind her decision to move home after two years in New South Wales.

Outlining the reasons behind the family’s decision to move back home, Lucas revealed the high costs of living in Australia as a foreign national – including extra costs for non-permanent residents in the country.

“Childcare is so expensive. We are not on a permanent resident visa so get no help with costs,” she said, adding that Adelaide – the city which the family were considering relocating to – charged extra for non-permanent residents.

“Public school is $7,000-per-year for us and daycare is $23,700-per-year for three days (a week),” Lucas continued.

“In Scotland, education is free and we get 30 hours each week towards nursery fees.

“Permanent residency takes eight to 10 months after applying which means we would be $31,000 just for childcare next year.”

Poor work-life balance and family bonding were also major concerns for the family.

“My husband works crazy hours here compared to the UK,” Lucas explained later in the video, adding that it’s common for employees in the construction business to do lots of unpaid overtime.

“His contract hours are 39 but everyone works longer with no overtime, which is just insane.”

The long hours her husband is away from the house have also had an impact on their happiness as a family, with the combination of the above reasons seeing them decide to head back to Scotland.

Explaining how she felt after making the decision, Lucas said: “Ever since we have made that decision we have felt a massive relief just come off us. I am just happy to go home.”

Sharing her advice for any Brits thinking of making the same decision, the vlogger added the she recommends coming over for an extended period of time rather than putting ‘pressure’ on themselves to make a new life ‘work out’.

The alleged rape took place following the 2000 Video Music Awards.

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Sean “Diddy” Combs are accused of raping a 13-year-old girl at an after-party following the 2000 Video Music Awards, according to an amended civil lawsuit filed Sunday.

“Another celebrity stood by and watched as Combs and Carter took turns assaulting the minor,” the lawsuit said without naming the celebrity.

In a statement posted to the Roc Nation X account on Sunday, Jay-Z denied the allegations made against him in the filing.

Jay-Z was added to the lawsuit that was originally filed in October as one of several anonymous complaints by Texas attorney Tony Buzbee.

MORE: Sexual assault lawsuit against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs by then-39-year-old man dismissed

Many of the lawsuits did not survive because the plaintiffs declined to be named; however, in this case, the judge said the then-13-year-old showed sufficient cause to continue anonymously.

Carter was identified in the original complaint as Celebrity A.

The plaintiff alleged she was noticed by a limousine driver who invited her to the after-party where Combs and Carter raped her.

In his statement, Jay-Z claimed Buzbee had sent his lawyer a “demand letter” ahead of the filing.

“My lawyer received a blackmail attempt, called a demand letter, from a ‘lawyer’ named Tony Buzbee. What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle,” Jay-Z wrote.

“No sir, it had the opposite effect! It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion. So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!” he added in the statement.

In his response, the music mogul questioned why the filing was a civil lawsuit rather than a criminal filing.

“Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree? These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case,” Jay-Z wrote.

Jay-Z went on to address the fact that his family, including his children, may be affected by the filing.

“My only heartbreak is for my family. My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” he wrote.

In a statement to ABC News Buzbee said, “The pleading speaks for itself. This is a very serious matter that will be litigated in court.”

Buzbee also took to his personal Instagram account on Sunday, saying he would not be “bullied or intimidated,” without mentioning the specific lawsuit, Jay-Z or Diddy by name.

“People will see through this effort to discredit me and my clients and the truth will be revealed,” Buzbee wrote. “I also won’t allow anyone to scare my clients into silence. Sunlight is the best disinfectant and I am quite certain the sun is coming,” he added.

Combs’ legal representatives responded to the filing in a statement to ABC News on Sunday, saying, “This amended complaint and the recent extortion lawsuit against Mr. Buzbee exposes his barrage of lawsuits against Mr. Combs for what they are: shameless publicity stunts, designed to extract payments from celebrities who fear having lies spread about them, just as lies have been spread about Mr. Combs.”

“As his legal team has said before, Mr. Combs has full confidence in the facts and the integrity of the judicial process. In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone — man or woman, adult or minor,” Combs’ representatives said in the statement.

How To Get Rid of (and Prevent) Blackheads: 10 Solutions

How To Get Rid of (and Prevent) Blackheads: 10 Solutions

Is there anything more annoying than seeing little black specks on your face?

We’ve all stood in front of the mirror and examined our pores from time to time, cursing our skin. But if the appearance of blackheads on your face really does bother you — rest assured, there are ways to get rid of them.

How To Get Rid of (and Prevent) Blackheads: 10 Solutions
How To Get Rid of (and Prevent) Blackheads: 10 Solutions

Dermatologist Alok Vij, MD, discusses how to get rid of blackheads and offers tips to prevent new ones from forming.

How to get rid of blackheads at home

“There are a few different ways we can attack blackheads,” says Dr. Vij. “But I do stress to be patient with your skin and that consistency is key. It took a while for your skin to get to this place and it will take a little while to get it back to where it was before.”

Learn how to remove blackheads with these tips:

Opt for salicylic acid

“My go-to treatment for blackheads is recommending a salicylic acid wash once a day,” he says. “There are even medicated face wipes that contain it.”

If you want to try salicylic acid, start off by using a product that contains between 2% and 4%. Then, you can modify the amount used by how your skin reacts. If it’s drying you out, opt to go down a bit.

Use an alpha or beta hydroxy acid cleanser

Alpha or beta hydroxy acid, also known as AHAs and BHAs, are a group of compounds known for its skin care benefits. Some of the most popular elements in this group include salicylic acid, lactic acid and citric acid.

Another great option for removing blackheads in the AHA family is using a product containing glycolic acid. Aim to use a cleanser with 10%. Glycolic acid serves as a great exfoliator, helping to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells — and those annoying blackheads.

Try a retinoid

“From a medical standpoint, I’ll typically prescribe a topical retinoid as treatment,” says Dr. Vij. “It’s good for making sure that the dead skin cells aren’t collecting inside the pores. It also helps to prevent outbreaks and reduces the formation of acne scars.”

Sometimes, it works to split treatment between a retinoid and an alpha or beta hydroxy acid. An example treatment could be using a salicylic acid cleanser in the morning and a retinoid at night.

Make sure you exfoliate

Exfoliation is an important part of every skin care routine — but it’s very easy to overdo.

“You should really only be exfoliating a couple times a week,” explains Dr. Vij. “Over-exfoliating your skin, especially your face, will dry it out very quickly.”

What’s worse? When your skin is dried out it produces more oil, which contributes to more blackheads. Your best bet is to keep exfoliating to a minimum.

Consider in-office treatments for stubborn blackheads

So, how do you get rid of stubborn blackheads? You may need the assistance of your dermatologist, who may recommend these in-office methods.

Chemical peels

Your dermatologist might suggest a chemical peel. This technique uses a chemical solution to remove your skin’s damaged outer layers. This can result in improved skin texture and smoothness.

But be aware — not all insurances cover these types of treatment.

And depending on whether you have a light, medium or deep chemical peel you may experience redness, stinging and swelling of your skin in the first 48 hours.

Microdermabrasion

Another treatment is microdermabrasion, which is also known as a “power peel.” Your skin is sprayed with tiny crystals to gently sand away your outer layer of skin.

The minimally invasive procedure improves the appearance of your skin. You may have mild side effects like redness, swelling and tenderness for a few hours after your treatment.

And like chemical peels, you may have to pay out-of-pocket for microdermabrasion.

Extraction

Sometimes, a good course of action for stubborn blackheads is by manual extraction, but it should always be kept in the hands of a professional.

Otherwise, you risk scarring your skin.

A professional — whether it’s a dermatologist or esthetician — may prep your skin with a light steam to expand your pores. Then, using a sterile metal tool called a comedone extractor, they’ll apply pressure to the blackhead to remove it from your pore.

Some professionals opt to use their fingers, which are typically covered in cotton, to perform the extraction.

Preventing blackheads

Your best defense against blackheads? Prevention. Here are some things you can do to help prevent or limit how many blackheads you get:

Don’t pick at your skin

While this is easier said than done, it’s vital.

Bacteria and oil are all over your hands, and anytime you touch or pick at your skin, you’re transferring it to your face. It can lead to increased inflammation and additional skin problems, including hyperpigmentation.

Picking at your skin can also cause permanent scarring. We know it’s hard, but try to resist.

Choose the right makeup and skin care products

If you’re serious about putting an end to pesky blackheads, be mindful about the products you put on your face.

Noncomedogenic makeup and skin products are specifically designed to not clog your pores. Using these types of products can help cut down on the number of blackheads you have. Dr. Vij also stresses the importance of using a facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 30.

And try to avoid wearing oily and heavy products. A good rule of thumb is the thinner the product, the better. Anytime something is on your skin — even a moisturizer — it has the potential to clog your pores.

Tread lightly with pore strips and face masks

If you’ve been wondering how to get rid of blackheads on your nose, you may have turned to pore strips or skin care face masks.

Adhesive strips and skin care masks tend to have the immediate gratification that most people are looking for, but oftentimes, these products don’t solve the underlying skin issue at hand.

“Pore stripes use an adhesive to lift the congestion out of the pore, which can be helpful if you’re getting ready for an event. For example, a teenager who wants to get ready for prom,” notes Dr. Vij. “But it will really only temporarily clear your skin and can have some side effects such as excess irritation and dryness.”

So, while it’s good advice to tread lightly with pore strips and skin care masks, they can serve a purpose from time to time. If you’re a savvy skin care user, ask your dermatologist about what products they recommend. This way, you can minimize the risk of using a mask or strip that could potentially irritate your skin.

While blackheads can be annoying and even embarrassing there are ways to combat the skin care issue — and it’s key to find a solution that works best for you and your skin type.

“Every skin type is different and should be treated that way,” states Dr. Vij. “And part of my job is to help you figure out what combination of treatment works for your skin.”

‘I have no idea what they even mean,’ Elon Musk noted

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a “Happy Pansexual and Panromantic Pride Day!” post on Sunday, earning backlash, with people expressing eager anticipation for the change in presidential administrations next month.

“Today on Pansexual and Panromantic Pride Day, everyone deserves to feel seen, respected and supported—no matter who they love. Create a world where everyone feels proud to be themselves!” HHS declared in the tweet.

Stephen Miller, who previously served in President-elect Donald Trump’s first administration and will serve in the upcoming administration as well, responded to the HHS post by noting, “Sanity is returning to HHS in 43 days.”

Fitness Model, 24, Was Killed Outside a Gym in Broad Daylight — Details

A fitness model was tragically killed outside a gym in broad daylight, sparking a manhunt for her shooter and leaving unanswered questions about the motive.

Fedra Oded Gaxiola Orozco, a 24-year-old fitness model and social media influencer, was fatally shot while sitting inside her black Mercedes Benz.

She was outside the Hardcore Fitness Gym in the López Lucio neighborhood of Tijuana, Mexico. The attack occurred at approximately 8:35 a.m. December 5, 2024, in plain view, as bystanders witnessed the chilling scene unfold.

According to reports, an unknown assailant approached Orozco’s vehicle and fired multiple shots through the window and car door. Witnesses said the suspect then fled the scene in a grey Chevrolet HHR. Orozco was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Authorities quickly launched a manhunt to track down the suspect. Homicide Unit Prosecutor Miguel Ángel Gaxiola Rodríguez confirmed that the investigation points to a suspect who acted alone. However, witnesses at the scene claimed the crime involved more than one person.

No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing. Orozco, originally from Sinaloa, Mexico, was known for her growing presence as a fitness model and social media influencer.

She amassed a substantial following online, with over 200,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok, as well as more than 10,000 followers on Facebook. Her content focused on fitness, fashion, and collaborations with various sportswear and aesthetic clothing brands.
Her death has raised questions about her safety in the weeks leading up to the attack. In August, Orozco made a public statement on social media, claiming that she had been a victim of physical abuse at the hands of her former partner, Héctor Villegas, who was once the director of Tijuana’s municipal police.
She alleged that she had been physically assaulted during their relationship. Just days before her death, she revealed on her Instagram stories that she had seen an armed man approach her, whom she claimed was a bodyguard for her ex-partner.
This was not the first time Orozco had been the target of gun violence. In 2011, she survived another shooting when her then-boyfriend was killed inside a BMW in the Hipódromo neighborhood. Her son, who was also in the car at the time, survived that incident as well.
The nature of the recent attack has drawn further attention to her previous reports of threats and abuse. While Homicide Unit Prosecutor Miguel Ángel Gaxiola Rodríguez stated that a lone suspect is believed to be responsible, conflicting witness accounts suggest that more than one man may have been involved.
No names of suspects have been released at this time. As of now, authorities continue their search for the suspect or suspects behind the shooting, while the public and Orozco’s followers remain in shock.

‘Number one hacker in the world’ explains why the dark web is so terrifying

Ryan Montgomery uses his hacking skills for good

A top hacker who uses his skills for good has explained why the dark web is so dangerous and something you should stay away from given what is on there.

Most of us have heard of the so-called ‘dark web’ without really knowing too much about it other than it’s a place online where you probably shouldn’t be, with a load of shady sh*t going down by people hiding their identity.

It is why most of us with standard knowledge of the internet and how to use it stay clear of such high risk places in the online world, with the criminal underbelly that dominates the dark web being enough to turn even the strongest of stomachs.

Ryan Montgomery is a professional hacker, who uses his skills as a cyber security expert and specialist to expose some of the worst people in the world.

A self-titled ‘child safety warrior’, he created the Sentinel Foundation to expose online predators and help children who are in desperate need. And with more than one million followers over on Instagram, he’s clearly gathered a loyal following who like what he does.

Appearing on the Shawn Ryan Show podcast to explain exactly what the dark web is, Montgomery revealed why it’s such an awful place where a lot of bad things happen.

Ryan Montgomery is an expert in his field (Instagram / @0day)

In order to get on to the dark web, you can’t use a normal browser like Google Chrome. You have to go through something called Tor, or The Onion Router, which is a software enabling anonymous communication online.

From there, you still need to know exactly where you’re going to get to the ‘horrible’ websites described by Montgomery.

“The dark web itself isn’t a marketplace like what you’re thinking, so the black market or whatever you want to call it,” he explains.

“Once you’re connected to the dark web, Tor, you still need to know where to go to visit these horrible websites. Imagine a very long string of letters and numbers and the website, instead of being ‘dot com’, it’ll be ‘dot onion’.”

He adds: “You can’t visit those websites in a regular browser; you have to do that while you’re connected to The Onion Router and then you can go to a thing called the ‘Hidden Wiki’ which will show you all different categories of these websites with links to them.”

So what is there? Grim stuff. Lots of it.

“There’s marketplaces, there’s horrible things on there like you said, for kids, and even murder for hire,” Montgomery says.

“There’s counterfeit money, there’s fake IDs, there’s all kinds of different websites that do horrible things.”

Montgomery says that while the dark web is good for normal internet browsing due to the added protection it gives you online, it is ‘incredibly slow’ and not something he would recommend based off of that. Instead, he only uses the dark web to catch creeps.

Another hacker, who is also using his skills for good, anonymously explained to VICE that he has seen some truly scary things on the dark web, such as seeing hospitals get held for ransom by criminals.
“I don’t think we have to worry too much about our nuclear arsenal being taken over movie style and used against us,” the same hacker said on what the future might look like.
“But I do think we have to worry about major impacts to financial markets or potential impacts to things like electricity production facilities.”

Former King of the Jungle Dougie Poynter joked on Instagram that he had wanted Coleen Rooney to be crowned winner of the 2024 series, rather than his pal Danny Jones

One of Danny Jones’ McFly bandmates has jokingly shared that they wanted Coleen Rooney to be crowned Queen of the Jungle.

Last night, the pop punk guitarist was named winner of the 2024 series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, beating the sleuthing WAG into second place. But former winner Dougie Poynter claims that he wanted Coleen to win.

He told his Instagram followers: “I’m actually really disappointed because I was voting for Coleen. Erm, whatever. I think she was the more deserving winner.” But before there was time for any rumours of a feud to fom, he added: “I’m joking, of course I’m f****** stoked.”

Turning up on a winter reality show has turned into a bit of a rite of passage for the McFly boys. In 2011, Dougie Pointer was crowned King of the Jungle – with Tom Fletcher making a cameo appearance as a question-asking gorilla. It was the same year Harry Judd picked up the Glitterball Trophy at the Strictly Come Dancing final in Blackpool.

Ten years later, Tom also took part in the BBC dancing contest and was paired up with Amy Dowden. They came seventh overall, making him the only member of the band to never take a reality show crown.

However, his wife, author Giovanna Fletcher, won the 2021 series of I’m A Celeb, which, due to lockdown restrictions, was filmed in a dank Welsh castle rather than the humid Aussie jungle.

During Sunday’s final Danny, 38, joined hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly in the studio and told them it felt “amazing” and “surreal” to win.

While Danny is clearly over the moon after being crowned King of the jungle – not everyone is as impressed. Several I’m A Celebrity viewers flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter , to insist that runner-up Coleen was ‘robbed’. Elsewhere, others pointed out that the McFly bandmates have dominated reality TV wins this year.

“People are underestimating the McFly fan base!!” Trust me, we’re not. Every member of McFly or Busted that steps foot in there becomes king of the jungle. It is this narrative “well Danny will win anyway” that makes it all quite boring! I LOVE Danny, don’t get me wrong I’ll be happy for him, but the writing was on the wall from day dot – regardless of how much we’ve come to love the others – and I think it’s a shame that the rest stand no chance tbh, it just takes a little bit of the excitement away #ImACeleb ,” one fumed.

“Should have put a bet on I’m A Celeb, don’t even watch the programme but even I know McFly fans are going to pull in the votes,” another complained. “If there’s one thing our mcfly boys are going to do, it’s win a reality show (sorry tom) #imaceleb ,” someone else pointed out.

“Danny Jones is not just king of the jungle! He is the KING OF TV! Started off the year as the winner of The Masked Singer, then won The Voice alongside Tom with their artist Ava, and now he’s gone and won I’m A Celeb. He deserves some sort of NTA for this! #ImACeleb ,” another fan added.

Wayne Rooney’s tear-jerking first words to Coleen after ITV I’m A Celebrity exit

Coleen Rooney left the jungle in second place to be reunited with her family last night after four weeks away and her husband Wayne, had some tear jerking words for her

I’m A Celebrity came to an end last night and while she didn’t win Queen of the Jungle, Coleen Rooney got something even better.

The WAG, 38, came in second place to McFly’s Danny Jones in the finale of the hit ITV show. While she said it was a shame she didn’t win the crown, her placing wasn’t a complete loss, as she was met with an adorable message from her husband, Wayne Rooney.

Coleen revealed in one of her first interviews since leaving the jungle that she spoke to Wayne, 39, after four weeks without communicating with him, and her long-time partner, who she has been with since she was 16, almost brought her to tears with his sweet words.

“He just said how much he missed me, how proud he was, and he said the support back home has been unbelievable,” she gushed. Coleen went on to adorably confess to Good Morning Britain : “He just can’t wait to see me, and I can’t wait to see him as well.”

Wayne, Coleen Rooney and their four sons

Coleen is looking forward to getting back to her family

Coleen and Wayne first met in 1998, becoming part of the same friendship group. Just a short 10 years later, they tied the knot in a luxury wedding in Portofino, Italy, that was estimated to have cost upwards of £5 million. The wedding featured performances by iconic bands Westlife and Stereophonics.

Throughout their lengthy marriage, the couple has welcomed four sons, Kai, 15, Klay, 11, Kit, eight, and Cass, six, with Coleen’s two youngest boys making the long trip to Australia to meet her as she left the jungle. Discussing why her two eldest boys didn’t come along, Coleen told the news outlet: “My two older boys have stayed at home because school is important at this age, and the two younger ones brought work away with them. I can’t wait to get home to the two older ones and Wayne, of course,” she added.

Speaking to the outlet, she also opened up about her fears when entering the show, explaining that it wasn’t sleeping outside or dealing with creepy crawlies but something completely unsuspecting: “It was karaoke and cooking. I don’t do karaoke, so why would I go on a show and think that I had to do it? I just enjoyed everyone else doing it,” she laughed.

Finalists Coleen, Reverend Richard, and Danny found out their fate last night. After Reverend Richard’s elimination, which saw him come third place, Coleen and Danny accumulated more than 10 million votes, proving it to be a popular final. However, ultimately, Danny came first, and Coleen came second.

Coleen said she was “gutted” that she wasn’t crowned Queen of the Jungle but knew her family would be excited for her regardless: “My boys have been proud of their dad for so long, it’s my turn now,” she said.

She also thanked fans for their support, explaining on the spin-off show Unpacked: “I think that people’s vote meant a lot. I have celebrated a lot of people in my life, so for people to celebrate me felt special.”

As for what’s next, she told GMB that the rumours of a “£1m telly deal” are news to her and said, “I’m looking forward to Christmas, and then in January, I will sit down with my team and see what I am going to do going forward.”

Pete Davidson cleared up rumour about his manhood after Ariana Grande outed size of his penis

Ariana Grande’s tweet about Pete Davidson’s penis has now been deleted

Rumours about how big Pete Davidson’s penis is all started when his ex Ariana Grande put out that infamous tweet in 2018.

The comedian has been tied with dating many beautiful celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian, Kaia Gerber, or even Kate Beckinsale.

However, singer Ariana Grande is the only one he’s been engaged to.

The former celebrity couple started dating in May 2018 and had a five-month engagement before breaking up.

And some believe that a certain tweet the singer put out might have something to do with Davidson’s popularity with the ladies.

At the time, someone accidentally asked her on X about the size of her fiancé’s penis.

“How long is Pete ???” they said, adding: “OH AS IN THE INTERLUDE NOT AS IN… ANYWAY.”

To which, Grande replied: “Like 10 inches?…. oh f**k… I mean a little over a minute.”

She quickly deleted the tweet but the screenshots are now there forever.

Since then, he’s always getting asked about his manhood, and straight shooter The Breakfast Club host Charlamagne wanted an answer.

“I don’t understand. It’s really not that special. It’s a very normal-sized penis,” Davidson confessed in 2023.

“It’s not too big or too small. I don’t understand that.

“It’s big enough to enjoy and not big enough for it to hurt, is what I was told.”

Now, in his 2020 Netflix special – Pete Davidson: Alive From New York – the comedian didn’t hold back when addressing the relationship.

“I don’t like that she talked all that s**t for my penis,” he began, before poking fun at her height of five-feet, three-inches, while Davidson is around six-feet three.

“Everything is huge to her,” he joked.

“Why would she tell everyone that I have a huge penis? So that every girl who sees my d**k for the rest of my life is disappointed.”

The SNL host also spoke about the pop star’s comments to Vogue earlier that year, in which she said: “I met Pete, and it was an amazing distraction. It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic, and I loved him, and I didn’t know him.”

Davidson hit back: “I wasn’t gonna do jokes about this, but then my buddy told me, he’s like, ‘Yo, I’ve recently heard that Ariana said she had no idea who you were. And she just dated you as a distraction’.

“So now I just think it’s like fair game and you’re like, ‘Pete, this isn’t fair. You’re like you’re airing out dirty laundry. How could you do that? Why did she say this stuff, to her friends, in the competence of her own home?’

“No, she said it on the cover of Vogue magazine.

“Can you imagine if I did that. My career will be over tomorrow.

“If I spray painted myself brown and hopped on the cover of Vogue magazine, and just started s**tting on my ex.”

Businessman Loses All Hope After His Diagnosis, but One Hospital Encounter Changes Everything — Story of the Day

When a workaholic businessman receives devastating news about his health, he meets a young boy in the hospital who changes his outlook on life. Their bond grows through unexpected friendship and small acts of kindness, teaching him what truly matters—until a heartbreaking twist reshapes everything.

Andrew, 50, sat at his desk, shuffling through papers while juggling scheduling meetings with his partners.

He didn’t hear Michael, his assistant, enter the room. Michael stood there, waiting. After a few moments, he cleared his throat.

No response. Andrew kept working, his focus sharp. Michael tried again. “Mr. Smith.” Still no answer. He repeated his name three more times.

Finally, Andrew slammed his hands on the desk and snapped, “What?”

Michael didn’t flinch. “You asked me to tell you if your ex-wife called.”

Andrew groaned and rubbed his temples. “How many times do I have to tell you? Ignore her calls. What now?”

Michael held a notepad. “She left a message. I should warn you—it’s a direct quote. Her words, not mine.” He read from the note. “‘You pompous jerk, I will never forgive you for wasting so many years of my life. If you don’t give me back my painting, I’ll smash your car.’ That’s the message.”

Andrew’s face turned red. “We’ve been divorced for two years! Does she not have anything better to do?”

Michael looked at him, waiting for further instructions. “Should I respond to her?”

“No! And stop taking her calls,” Andrew said. Then he paused. “Actually, tell her I threw that painting in the trash!”

Andrew grabbed a pen and hurled it toward the wall. Michael ducked slightly, gave a polite nod, and left the room.

Moments later, Andrew’s phone rang. He frowned, picking it up.

“Andrew Smith?” a voice asked.

“Yes. Who’s calling?”

“This is the hospital. Your test results are ready. The doctor wants to see you.”

“Can’t you just tell me now?” Andrew said, irritated. “I’m busy.”

“Sorry, sir. The doctor will explain in person.”

Andrew sighed heavily. “Fine. I’ll come in.” He hung up, shaking his head.

Andrew rarely allowed himself the luxury of a lunch break, but this time was different. The doctor’s office was quiet, the ticking clock on the wall the only sound.

Andrew sat stiffly in a chair, his fingers tapping against the armrest. When the door opened, the doctor stepped in, his face serious. Andrew frowned, sensing bad news.

The doctor sat across from him and spoke in a steady, measured tone, using terms Andrew didn’t understand.

Then came the word—cancer. “We need to act fast,” the doctor said.

“Is this some kind of joke?” Andrew asked, his voice sharp. “I own a company. I can’t just check into a hospital.”

The doctor met his eyes. “Your health should come first. The company can wait.”

Andrew leaned forward. “What are my chances of getting better?”

“I can’t promise anything,” the doctor said. “Starting treatment right away is critical.”

Andrew’s voice rose. “Can I still work while I’m here?”

“Treatment affects everyone differently,” the doctor explained. “You will stay in the hospital so we can monitor you. Someone can bring you a computer.”

Andrew frowned and stood up. “Fine. I’ll sort it out.”

The doctor watched him leave. “We’ll see you tomorrow with your things,” he said before Andrew reached the door.

As Andrew walked through the hospital’s pediatric wing, he noticed a boy, about eight years old, tossing a ball back and forth with a nurse.

The sound of their laughter echoed in the corridor. The ball suddenly rolled across the floor and stopped near Andrew’s feet.

“Excuse me, sir!” the boy called out, smiling. “Can you please throw the ball back?”

Andrew picked up the ball, his face tense. Without a word, he hurled it down the hall, far from the boy and nurse, then turned and walked away.

“That was mean, sir!” the boy shouted.

Andrew had been in the hospital for days that felt like weeks. He tried to keep working, setting up his laptop and pushing through meetings.

But the treatment was draining. Each session left him weaker. The nausea was constant, and sleep was nearly impossible.

One afternoon, during another long chemotherapy session, Andrew leaned back, his eyes half-closed. He felt miserable.

Suddenly, a small voice broke through his fog. He opened his eyes to see a boy standing in front of him. Startled, Andrew flinched. The boy giggled. It was the same boy from the corridor.

“What do you want, kid?” Andrew mumbled, not even lifting his head.

“I’ve been walking around the hospital looking for someone to play with. It’s boring here.”

Andrew glanced at him, annoyed. “What’s your name?” he asked.

“Tommy,” the boy replied with a wide grin.

Andrew sighed. “Listen, Tommy. I’m not in the mood to play. Go bother someone else before I start feeling worse.”

Tommy didn’t move. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small peppermint candy. He held it out to Andrew. “This helps with nausea. You should try it.”

Andrew hesitated, then snatched the candy and set it on the table.

“You’re really grumpy!” Tommy said, laughing. “I’m going to call you Mr. Grouch. Are you mad because you’re scared of needles?” He pointed at the IV attached to Andrew’s arm.

Andrew frowned. “I’m not scared of anything.”

Tommy nodded. “That’s fine. I was scared at first too, but then I stopped. My mom says I’m a superhero. Do you have a superpower?”

“No,” Andrew said, his voice flat.

“That’s because you’re too sad,” Tommy replied, his tone serious now.

Andrew looked at the boy, surprised by the honesty in his big, bright eyes. “Is there anything you want?” Andrew asked.

Tommy grinned. “Yeah. I want to buy flowers for my mom. She works really hard, but I don’t have any money.”

Andrew sighed again, reached for his wallet, and pulled out a few bills. “Here. Get your flowers. Maybe buy yourself something too. But leave me alone.”

Tommy’s face lit up. “Thanks, Mr. Grouch!” He ran out, clutching the money, while Andrew stared at the peppermint candy on the table.

With a sigh, he picked it up, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth. To his surprise, the sharp sweetness helped ease the nausea. It wasn’t much, but it made a difference for a while.

That evening, as Andrew stared at his laptop, a nurse knocked on his door.

She carried a small paper bag. “This is for you,” she said, placing it on the table. “Tommy sent it.”

Andrew opened the bag and found it full of peppermint candies. He shook his head, unsure whether to feel amused or moved.

The next morning, he decided to find Tommy. He needed to make one thing clear: the money wasn’t a gift.

As he approached Tommy’s room, he saw a woman leaning against the wall, her shoulders shaking. She was crying.

“Are you okay?” Andrew asked, his voice low.

The woman wiped her eyes quickly and looked up. “Yes… Did you need something?”

“Tommy gave me some candies yesterday,” Andrew said.

The woman’s lips curved into a small smile. “Oh, so you’re Mr. Grouch,” she said.

Andrew raised an eyebrow. “My name’s Andrew,” he replied.

“I’m Sara,” she said. “Are you here for treatment too?”

Andrew nodded.

“Then you understand,” Sara said quietly. “The bills, the stress. I can’t even pay rent right now. They told me we’ll be evicted in two months.”

Andrew nodded again, unsure of what to say. Before he could respond, the door burst open. Tommy ran out, his face lighting up when he saw Andrew. “Hey, Mr. Grouch!” he called, grinning ear to ear.

From that day forward, Tommy became a constant presence in Andrew’s life.

The boy would wander into Andrew’s room with a big grin and endless energy. At first, Andrew found it annoying, but Tommy’s persistence wore him down.

Soon, Andrew began looking forward to the visits. Tommy taught him to notice the simple joys in life.

They sat by the window, watching the sunset, guessing the colors in the sky. They played harmless pranks on nurses, earning scolding looks and stifled smiles.

Sometimes, they “borrowed” wheelchairs and raced down the halls, laughing until their sides hurt.

Andrew didn’t ask about Tommy’s illness. He wasn’t sure how to bring it up. One afternoon, Tommy mentioned Sara had been crying again. “She’s worried about money,” Tommy said. “We might lose our house.”

Andrew quietly gave Tommy an envelope of cash. “Tell her it’s from a magician,” he said.

When Sara tried to return the money, Andrew waved her off. “I’m not a magician,” he said. “I don’t know where it came from.”

Weeks passed. Andrew’s treatments worked, and the day came when the doctor gave him the news—he was cancer-free.

Ecstatic, Andrew rushed to share it with Tommy. But when he arrived, Tommy was unconscious, Sara sitting beside him, tears streaming down her face.

“What happened?” Andrew asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Sara wiped her eyes and shook her head. “The doctors said there’s nothing more they can do.”

Andrew stared at her, struggling to process the words. “But… he seemed so happy. He always smiled. I thought he was improving.”

Sara looked at him, her face full of pain. “He didn’t want you to see how sick he was. He wanted to be strong for you. He thought he was a superhero.”

Andrew’s chest tightened. “I’m so sorry.”

Sara managed a faint smile through her tears. “Don’t be. He said you saved him. These months, you gave him laughter and hope. You made him forget about being sick.”

Andrew shook his head slowly. “No. He’s the one who saved me.”

He stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her in a gentle hug. She cried quietly against his shoulder, and though Andrew wished he could take her pain away, he knew nothing would ever truly ease it.

That night, Tommy passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his mother and the memories he had made.

Andrew sat alone in his room afterward, overwhelmed by the loss. Andrew couldn’t bear the thought of such a bright soul being forgotten.

Determined, he started a foundation in Tommy’s name to help sick children, ensuring his kindness would live on.

He also stayed in touch with Sara, offering her support in every way he could.

One afternoon, Andrew stood at his ex-wife’s door, holding the painting she had demanded for so long. She opened the door, her mouth ready to hurl accusations, but Andrew silently handed her the painting.

“I’m not here to argue,” Andrew said, his tone calm as he held out the painting.

His ex-wife frowned, puzzled. “What is this supposed to mean?” she asked.

“Nothing important,” Andrew replied, a small smile forming. “I’m just making sure I keep my superpowers.” Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked away.
